भीष्म उवाच॥
Bhīṣma said.
यमस्तु यानि श्राद्धानि प्रोवाच शशबिन्दवे। तानि मे शृणु काम्यानि नक्षत्रेषु पृथक्पृथक् ॥१३-८९-१॥
But Yama spoke to Śaśabindu about the śrāddha-rites that are to be performed with desire; now hear from me about those, which are to be performed on the various nakṣatras, each one separately. (13-89-1)
श्राद्धं यः कृत्तिकायोगे कुर्वीत सततं नरः। अग्नीनाधाय सापत्यो यजेत विगतज्वरः ॥१३-८९-२॥
A man who always performs the ancestral rite at the conjunction with Kṛttikā, having established the sacred fires, having children and being free from illness, should perform the sacrifice. (13-89-2)
अपत्यकामो रोहिण्यामोजस्कामो मृगोत्तमे। क्रूरकर्मा ददच्छ्राद्धमार्द्रायां मानवो भवेत् ॥१३-८९-३॥
A man desiring offspring (should give śrāddha) in Rohiṇī; one desiring strength, in the best part of Mṛga; one who performs cruel acts giving śrāddha in Ārdrā becomes so. (13-89-3)
कृषिभागी भवेन्मर्त्यः कुर्वञ्श्राद्धं पुनर्वसौ। पुष्टिकामोऽथ पुष्येण श्राद्धमीहेत मानवः ॥१३-८९-४॥
A man involved in agriculture should perform Śrāddha on the day of Punarvasu. If he desires nourishment, then he should seek to perform Śrāddha on the day of Puṣya. (13-89-4)
आश्लेषायां ददच्छ्राद्धं वीरान्पुत्रान्प्रजायते। ज्ञातीनां तु भवेच्छ्रेष्ठो मघासु श्राद्धमावपन् ॥१३-८९-५॥
One who performs the śrāddha ceremony on the day of Āśleṣā begets heroic sons. However, among relatives, he becomes the best who offers śrāddha on Maghā days. (13-89-5)
फल्गुनीषु ददच्छ्राद्धं सुभगः श्राद्धदो भवेत्। अपत्यभागुत्तरासु हस्तेन फलभाग्भवेत् ॥१३-८९-६॥
He who performs the śrāddha in the lunar mansions of Phalgunī becomes a fortunate giver of śrāddha; in the Uttarā nakṣatras, if performed with his own hand, he becomes the partaker of the fruit as one who has progeny. (13-89-6)
चित्रायां तु ददच्छ्राद्धं लभेद्रूपवतः सुतान्। स्वातियोगे पितॄनर्च्य वाणिज्यमुपजीवति ॥१३-८९-७॥
But if one performs śrāddha on Citrā, he obtains handsome sons; when (the Moon) is in Svāti and he worships the ancestors, he sustains himself by trade. (13-89-7)
बहुपुत्रो विशाखासु पित्र्यमीहन्भवेन्नरः। अनुराधासु कुर्वाणो राजचक्रं प्रवर्तयेत् ॥१३-८९-८॥
If a man desires to honor his forefathers during Viśākhā, he will have many sons; performing rites in Anurādhā, he should establish royal authority. (13-89-8)
आदिपत्यं व्रजेन्मर्त्यो ज्येष्ठायामपवर्जयन्। नरः कुरुकुलश्रेष्ठ श्रद्धादमपुरःसरः ॥१३-८९-९॥
O best of the Kuru lineage, a man who, during the month of Jyeṣṭha, offers charity with faith at the forefront, avoiding (what is to be discarded), might obtain supremacy. (13-89-9)
मूले त्वारोग्यमर्च्छेत यशोऽषाढास्वनुत्तमम्। उत्तरासु त्वषाढासु वीतशोकश्चरेन्महीम् ॥१३-८९-१०॥
During Mūla nakṣatra, one should obtain health; during Aṣāḍhā, unsurpassed fame. In Uttarā Aṣāḍhā, moving about the earth, one will be free from sorrow. (13-89-10)
श्राद्धं त्वभिजिता कुर्वन्विद्यां श्रेष्ठामवाप्नुयात्। श्रवणे तु ददच्छ्राद्धं प्रेत्य गच्छेत्परां गतिम् ॥१३-८९-११॥
By performing a funeral rite on Abhijit, one may attain excellent knowledge; but by giving a funeral rite on Śravaṇa, after death, one may go to the highest state. (13-89-11)
राज्यभागी धनिष्ठायां प्राप्नुयान्नापदं नरः। नक्षत्रे वारुणे कुर्वन्भिषक्सिद्धिमवाप्नुयात् ॥१३-८९-१२॥
A man who obtains a share in the kingdom during Dhanisthā will not encounter misfortune; during the Vāruṇa constellation, a physician performing (his duties) may achieve success. (13-89-12)
पूर्वप्रोष्ठपदाः कुर्वन्बहु विन्देदजाविकम्। उत्तरास्वथ कुर्वाणो विन्दते गाः सहस्रशः ॥१३-८९-१३॥
By performing (the rites) during the earlier Proṣṭhapada days, one obtains many goats and sheep; but by performing in the later days, one obtains cows by the thousands. (13-89-13)
बहुरूप्यकृतं वित्तं विन्दते रेवतीं श्रितः। अश्वांश्चाश्वयुजे वेत्ति भरणीष्वायुरुत्तमम् ॥१३-८९-१४॥
One who is connected with Revatī attains wealth made by counterfeit coins; in Āśvayuja he gains horses; in Bharaṇī he attains excellent longevity. (13-89-14)
इमं श्राद्धविधिं श्रुत्वा शशबिन्दुस्तथाकरोत्। अक्लेशेनाजयच्चापि महीं सोऽनुशशास ह ॥१३-८९-१५॥
Having heard this śrāddha procedure, Śaśabindu performed it in the same way; without difficulty, he also conquered the earth and indeed ruled it. (13-89-15)
