Bhīṣma said.
यमस्तु यानि श्राद्धानि प्रोवाच शशबिन्दवे। तानि मे शृणु काम्यानि नक्षत्रेषु पृथक्पृथक् ॥१३-८९-१॥
yamastu yāni śrāddhāni provāca śaśabindave। tāni me śṛṇu kāmyāni nakṣatreṣu pṛthakpṛthak ॥13-89-1॥
[यमः (yamaḥ) - Yama; (the deity presiding over dharma and ancestors); तु (tu) - but; यानि (yāni) - which; (plural, neuter); श्राद्धानि (śrāddhāni) - śrāddha-rites; (ancestral offerings); प्रोवाच (provāca) - spoke; (he said); शशबिन्दवे (śaśabindave) - to Śaśabindu; (proper noun; the king named Śaśabindu); तानि (tāni) - those; (plural, neuter); मे (me) - to me; (dative, first person); शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; (imperative, you listen); काम्यानि (kāmyāni) - desirable; (those performed for desire); नक्षत्रेषु (nakṣatreṣu) - in nakṣatras; (during lunar asterisms); पृथक् पृथक् (pṛthak pṛthak) - separately; (individually, one after another);]
(But Yama spoke those śrāddha-rites which (are) desirable to Śaśabindu; those to me hear (about), which (are) desirable, in nakṣatras, separately, separately.)
But Yama spoke to Śaśabindu about the śrāddha-rites that are to be performed with desire; now hear from me about those, which are to be performed on the various nakṣatras, each one separately. (13-89-1)
श्राद्धं यः कृत्तिकायोगे कुर्वीत सततं नरः। अग्नीनाधाय सापत्यो यजेत विगतज्वरः ॥१३-८९-२॥
śrāddhaṃ yaḥ kṛttikāyoge kurvīta satataṃ naraḥ। agnīn ādhāya sāpatyo yajeta vigatajvaraḥ॥13-89-2॥
[श्राद्धं (śrāddham) - ancestral rite; यः (yaḥ) - who; कृत्तिकायोगे (kṛttikā-yoge) - on the conjunction (with) Kṛttikā (asterism); कुर्वीत (kurvīta) - should perform; सततं (satataṃ) - always; नरः (naraḥ) - a man; अग्नीन् (agnīn) - fires; आधाय (ādhāya) - having established; सापत्यः (sāpatyaḥ) - having children; यजेत (yajeta) - should perform sacrifice; विगतज्वरः (vigatajvaraḥ) - free from illness;]
(Ancestral rite who on the conjunction with Kṛttikā should perform always a man; fires having established, having children, should perform sacrifice, free from illness; (13-89-2))
A man who always performs the ancestral rite at the conjunction with Kṛttikā, having established the sacred fires, having children and being free from illness, should perform the sacrifice. (13-89-2)
अपत्यकामो रोहिण्यामोजस्कामो मृगोत्तमे। क्रूरकर्मा ददच्छ्राद्धमार्द्रायां मानवो भवेत् ॥१३-८९-३॥
apatyakāmo rohiṇyām ojas-kāmo mṛgottame। krūrakarmā dadacchrāddham ārdhrāyāṃ mānavo bhavet ॥13-89-3॥
[अपत्यकामो (apatyakāmaḥ) - desiring progeny; रोहिण्याम् (rohiṇyām) - in Rohiṇī (nakṣatra); ओजस्कामो (ojaskāmaḥ) - desiring strength; मृगोत्तमे (mṛgottame) - in Uttara-Mṛga (best part of Mṛga nakṣatra); क्रूरकर्मा (krūrakarmā) - one whose acts are harsh; ददच्छ्राद्धम् (dadacchrāddham) - giving śrāddha; आर्द्रायाम् (ārdhrāyām) - in Ārdrā (nakṣatra); मानवः (mānavaḥ) - a man; भवेत् (bhavet) - he becomes;]
(Desiring progeny, in Rohiṇī, desiring strength, in best of Mṛga, one of harsh actions giving śrāddha, in Ārdrā, a man becomes.)
A man desiring offspring (should give śrāddha) in Rohiṇī; one desiring strength, in the best part of Mṛga; one who performs cruel acts giving śrāddha in Ārdrā becomes so. (13-89-3)
कृषिभागी भवेन्मर्त्यः कुर्वञ्श्राद्धं पुनर्वसौ। पुष्टिकामोऽथ पुष्येण श्राद्धमीहेत मानवः ॥१३-८९-४॥
kṛṣibhāgī bhavenmartyaḥ kurvañśrāddhaṃ punarvasau। puṣṭikāmo'tha puṣyeṇa śrāddhamīheta mānavaḥ ॥13-89-4॥
[कृषिभागी (kṛṣibhāgī) - one engaged in agriculture; भवेत् (bhavet) - should become; मर्त्यः (martyaḥ) - mortal man; कुर्वन् (kurvan) - performing; श्राद्धं (śrāddham) - Śrāddha (ancestral offering); पुनर्वसौ (punarvasau) - on Punarvasu (nakṣatra); पुष्टिकामः (puṣṭikāmaḥ) - desiring nourishment; अथ (atha) - then; पुष्येण (puṣyeṇa) - on Puṣya (nakṣatra); श्राद्धम् (śrāddham) - Śrāddha (ancestral offering); ईहेत (īheta) - should desire; मानवः (mānavaḥ) - man;]
(One engaged in agriculture should become a mortal man performing Śrāddha on Punarvasu. Desiring nourishment, then, on Puṣya, a man should desire Śrāddha.)
A man involved in agriculture should perform Śrāddha on the day of Punarvasu. If he desires nourishment, then he should seek to perform Śrāddha on the day of Puṣya. (13-89-4)
आश्लेषायां ददच्छ्राद्धं वीरान्पुत्रान्प्रजायते। ज्ञातीनां तु भवेच्छ्रेष्ठो मघासु श्राद्धमावपन् ॥१३-८९-५॥
āśleṣāyāṃ dadacchrāddhaṃ vīrān putrān prajāyate. jñātīnāṃ tu bhavecchreṣṭho maghāsu śrāddhamāvapan ॥13-89-5॥
[आश्लेषायाम् (āśleṣāyām) - on Āśleṣā (lunar constellation) day; ददत् (dadat) - offering (performing, giving); श्राद्धम् (śrāddham) - śrāddha rite; वीरान् (vīrān) - heroic (valiant, brave); पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; प्रजायते (prajāyate) - begets (is born); ज्ञातीनाम् (jñātīnām) - of relatives; तु (tu) - but; भवेत् (bhavet) - becomes; श्रेष्ठः (śreṣṭhaḥ) - the best; मघासु (maghāsu) - on Maghā (lunar constellation) days; श्राद्धम् (śrāddham) - śrāddha rite; आवपन् (āvapan) - performing (offering);]
(On Āśleṣā day offering śrāddha ceremony heroic sons are begotten. Of relatives, however, he becomes the best who performs śrāddha on Maghā days.)
One who performs the śrāddha ceremony on the day of Āśleṣā begets heroic sons. However, among relatives, he becomes the best who offers śrāddha on Maghā days. (13-89-5)
फल्गुनीषु ददच्छ्राद्धं सुभगः श्राद्धदो भवेत्। अपत्यभागुत्तरासु हस्तेन फलभाग्भवेत् ॥१३-८९-६॥
phalgunīṣu dadacchrāddhaṃ subhagaḥ śrāddhado bhavet। apatya-bhāg-uttarāsu hastena phalabhāgbhavet॥13-89-6॥
[फल्गुनीषु (phalgunīṣu) - in the [lunar asterism] Phalgunīs; ददत् (dadat) - giving; श्राद्धं (śrāddham) - śrāddha-rite; सुभगः (subhagaḥ) - the fortunate one; श्राद्धदः (śrāddhadaḥ) - giver of the śrāddha; भवेत् (bhavet) - becomes; अपत्यभाग् (apatya-bhāg) - one with progeny; उत्तरासु (uttarāsu) - in the [nakṣatras] Uttarās; हस्तेन (hastena) - with hand; फलभाग् (phalabhāg) - partaker of the fruit; भवेत् (bhavet) - becomes;]
(In the Phalgunīs, giving śrāddha, the fortunate giver of the śrāddha becomes. With the hand in the Uttarās, one who has progeny becomes partaker of the fruit.)
He who performs the śrāddha in the lunar mansions of Phalgunī becomes a fortunate giver of śrāddha; in the Uttarā nakṣatras, if performed with his own hand, he becomes the partaker of the fruit as one who has progeny. (13-89-6)
चित्रायां तु ददच्छ्राद्धं लभेद्रूपवतः सुतान्। स्वातियोगे पितॄनर्च्य वाणिज्यमुपजीवति ॥१३-८९-७॥
citrāyāṁ tu dadacchrāddhaṁ labhed rūpavataḥ sutān। svātiyoge pitṝn arcya vāṇijyam upajīvati॥13-89-7॥
[चित्रायाम् (citrāyām) - on the (lunar) day Citrā; तु (tu) - but; ददत् (dadat) - offering; श्राद्धम् (śrāddham) - śrāddha (ancestral offering); लभेत् (labhet) - he obtains; रूपवतः (rūpavataḥ) - handsome; सुतान् (sutān) - sons; स्वाति-योगे (svāti-yoge) - when (the Moon) joins Svāti (nakṣatra); पितॄन् (pitṝn) - (his) ancestors; अर्च्य (arcya) - worshipping; वाणिज्यम् (vāṇijyam) - trade; उपजीवति (upajīvati) - he sustains himself;]
(But offering śrāddha on Citrā, he obtains handsome sons. When joined with Svāti, worshipping the ancestors, he sustains himself by trade.)
But if one performs śrāddha on Citrā, he obtains handsome sons; when (the Moon) is in Svāti and he worships the ancestors, he sustains himself by trade. (13-89-7)
बहुपुत्रो विशाखासु पित्र्यमीहन्भवेन्नरः। अनुराधासु कुर्वाणो राजचक्रं प्रवर्तयेत् ॥१३-८९-८॥
bahuputro viśākhāsu pitryam īhan bhaven naraḥ। anurādhāsu kurvāṇo rājacakraṃ pravartayet॥13-89-8॥
[बहुपुत्रः (bahuputraḥ) - having many sons; many-offspringed; विशाखासु (viśākhāsu) - in the (nakṣatra) Viśākhā; during Viśākhā (lunar mansion); पित्र्यम् (pitryam) - ancestral; relating to forefathers; ईहन् (īhan) - desiring; striving for; भवेत् (bhavet) - would become; should be; नरः (naraḥ) - man; person; अनुराधासु (anurādhāsu) - in the (nakṣatra) Anurādhā; during Anurādhā (lunar mansion); कुर्वाणः (kurvāṇaḥ) - performing; doing; राजचक्रम् (rājacakram) - royal wheel; kingly power (government); प्रवर्तयेत् (pravartayet) - should set in motion; should institute;]
(A man, desiring ancestral (rites), in Viśākhā (may become) one with many sons; performing (rites) in Anurādhā, should set the royal wheel in motion.)
If a man desires to honor his forefathers during Viśākhā, he will have many sons; performing rites in Anurādhā, he should establish royal authority. (13-89-8)
आदिपत्यं व्रजेन्मर्त्यो ज्येष्ठायामपवर्जयन्। नरः कुरुकुलश्रेष्ठ श्रद्धादमपुरःसरः ॥१३-८९-९॥
ādipatyaṃ vrajen martyo jyeṣṭhāyām apavarjayan। naraḥ kurukulaśreṣṭha śraddhādam apuraḥsaraḥ॥13-89-9॥
[आदिपत्यं (ādipatyaṃ) - leadership; supremacy; व्रजेत् (vrajet) - might obtain; may go; मर्त्यः (martyaḥ) - a mortal; human being; ज्येष्ठायाम् (jyeṣṭhāyām) - in the (month of) Jyeṣṭha; अपवर्जयन् (apavarjayan) - (by) removing; by avoiding; नरः (naraḥ) - man; person; कुरुकुलश्रेष्ठ (kurukulaśreṣṭha) - O best of the Kuru lineage; श्रद्धादम् (śraddhādam) - offering faith; giving charity with faith; पुरःसरः (puraḥsaraḥ) - preceded by; with as the foremost;]
(Leadership might obtain a mortal in (the month of) Jyeṣṭha by removing (by avoiding), man, O best of the Kuru lineage, offering charity with faith as foremost.)
O best of the Kuru lineage, a man who, during the month of Jyeṣṭha, offers charity with faith at the forefront, avoiding (what is to be discarded), might obtain supremacy. (13-89-9)
मूले त्वारोग्यमर्च्छेत यशोऽषाढास्वनुत्तमम्। उत्तरासु त्वषाढासु वीतशोकश्चरेन्महीम् ॥१३-८९-१०॥
mūle tv ārogyam arcchet yaśo 'ṣāḍhāsu anuttamam। uttarāsu tu aṣāḍhāsu vītaśokaḥ caret mahīm ॥13-89-10॥
[मूले (mūle) - at Mūla (nakṣatra); त्व (tv) - indeed; but; आरोग्यम् (ārogyam) - health; अर्च्छेत् (arcchet) - should obtain; यशः (yaśaḥ) - fame; अषाढासु (aṣāḍhāsu) - in Aṣāḍhā (nakṣatra)s; अनुत्तमम् (anuttamam) - unsurpassed; उत्तरासु (uttarāsu) - in Uttarā (nakṣatra)s; त्व (tv) - indeed; but; अषाढासु (aṣāḍhāsu) - in Aṣāḍhā (nakṣatra)s; वीतशोकः (vītaśokaḥ) - free from sorrow; चरेत् (caret) - should walk; महीम् (mahīm) - earth;]
(At Mūla, indeed, health should obtain; fame, in Aṣāḍhā unsurpassed. In Uttarā Aṣāḍhā, indeed, one free from sorrow should walk the earth.)
During Mūla nakṣatra, one should obtain health; during Aṣāḍhā, unsurpassed fame. In Uttarā Aṣāḍhā, moving about the earth, one will be free from sorrow. (13-89-10)
श्राद्धं त्वभिजिता कुर्वन्विद्यां श्रेष्ठामवाप्नुयात्। श्रवणे तु ददच्छ्राद्धं प्रेत्य गच्छेत्परां गतिम् ॥१३-८९-११॥
śrāddhaṃ tv abhijitā kurvan vidyāṃ śreṣṭhām avāpnuyāt। śravaṇe tu dadac chrāddhaṃ pretya gacchet parāṃ gatim॥13-89-11॥
[श्राद्धं (śrāddham) - funeral rite; त्व (tv) - but; अभिजिता (abhijitā) - on Abhijit (lunar asterism or specific time period); कुर्वन् (kurvan) - performing; विद्याम् (vidyām) - knowledge; श्रेष्ठाम् (śreṣṭhām) - excellent; superior; अवाप्नुयात् (avāpnuyāt) - may attain; श्रवणे (śravaṇe) - on Śravaṇa (lunar asterism or specific time period); तु (tu) - but; ददत् (dadat) - giving; श्राद्धं (śrāddham) - funeral rite; प्रेत्य (pretya) - after death; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - may go; परां (parāṃ) - supreme; highest; गतिम् (gatim) - state; destination;]
(Funeral rite but on Abhijit performing, knowledge excellent may attain. On Śravaṇa but giving funeral rite, after death may go supreme state.)
By performing a funeral rite on Abhijit, one may attain excellent knowledge; but by giving a funeral rite on Śravaṇa, after death, one may go to the highest state. (13-89-11)
राज्यभागी धनिष्ठायां प्राप्नुयान्नापदं नरः। नक्षत्रे वारुणे कुर्वन्भिषक्सिद्धिमवाप्नुयात् ॥१३-८९-१२॥
rājyabhāgī dhaniṣṭhāyāṃ prāpnuyānnāpadaṃ naraḥ। nakṣatre vāruṇe kurvanbhiṣaksiddhimavāpnuyāt ॥13-89-12॥
[राज्यभागी (rājyabhāgī) - one obtaining a share in the kingdom; धनिष्ठायां (dhaniṣṭhāyāṃ) - in Dhanisthā (name of a lunar mansion); प्राप्नुयात् (prāpnuyāt) - may obtain; नापदं (nāpadaṃ) - not misfortune; नरः (naraḥ) - a man; नक्षत्रे (nakṣatre) - in the constellation; वारुणे (vāruṇe) - Vāruṇa (name of a lunar mansion, associated with Varuṇa); कुर्वन् (kurvan) - doing; भिषक् (bhiṣak) - physician; सिद्धिम् (siddhim) - success; अवाप्नुयात् (avāpnuyāt) - may attain;]
(A man obtaining a share in the kingdom in Dhanisthā may obtain not misfortune; in the Vāruṇa constellation, a physician doing (the act) may attain success.)
A man who obtains a share in the kingdom during Dhanisthā will not encounter misfortune; during the Vāruṇa constellation, a physician performing (his duties) may achieve success. (13-89-12)
पूर्वप्रोष्ठपदाः कुर्वन्बहु विन्देदजाविकम्। उत्तरास्वथ कुर्वाणो विन्दते गाः सहस्रशः ॥१३-८९-१३॥
pūrvaproṣṭhapadāḥ kurvanbahu vindedajāvikam। uttarāsvatha kurvāṇo vindate gāḥ sahasraśaḥ॥13-89-13॥
[पूर्वप्रोष्ठपदाः (pūrvaproṣṭhapadāḥ) - the earlier Proṣṭhapada days; कुर्वन् (kurvan) - practicing; बहु (bahu) - much; विन्देत् (vindet) - one obtains; अजाविकम् (ajāvikam) - goats and sheep; उत्तरासु (uttarāsu) - in the later (days); अथ (atha) - then; कुर्वाणः (kurvāṇaḥ) - who is performing; विन्दते (vindate) - obtains; गाः (gāḥ) - cows; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by thousands; १३-८९-१३ (13-89-13) - (13-89-13);]
(The earlier Proṣṭhapada days practicing much, one obtains goats and sheep. In the later (days), then, the one performing obtains cows by thousands. (13-89-13))
By performing (the rites) during the earlier Proṣṭhapada days, one obtains many goats and sheep; but by performing in the later days, one obtains cows by the thousands. (13-89-13)
बहुरूप्यकृतं वित्तं विन्दते रेवतीं श्रितः। अश्वांश्चाश्वयुजे वेत्ति भरणीष्वायुरुत्तमम् ॥१३-८९-१४॥
bahurūpyakṛtaṃ vittaṃ vindate revatīṃ śritaḥ। aśvāṃścāśvayuje vetti bharaṇīṣvāyuruttamam ॥13-89-14॥
[बहुरूप्यकृतं (bahurūpyakṛtam) - made by counterfeit money; वित्तं (vittam) - wealth; विन्दते (vindate) - obtains; रेवतीं (revatīm) - (the nakṣatra) Revatī; श्रितः (śritaḥ) - one who is under (entered/upon); अश्वान् (aśvān) - horses; च (ca) - and; अश्वयुजे (aśvayuje) - in (the month of) Āśvayuja; वेत्टि (vetti) - knows (or gains); भरणीषु (bharaṇīṣu) - in (the nakṣatra) Bharaṇī; आयुः (āyuḥ) - life; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - excellent;]
(He who is under (born under/connected with) Revatī obtains wealth made by counterfeit coins; and in the month of Āśvayuja he attains horses; in Bharaṇī (nakṣatra) he attains excellent life.)
One who is connected with Revatī attains wealth made by counterfeit coins; in Āśvayuja he gains horses; in Bharaṇī he attains excellent longevity. (13-89-14)
इमं श्राद्धविधिं श्रुत्वा शशबिन्दुस्तथाकरोत्। अक्लेशेनाजयच्चापि महीं सोऽनुशशास ह ॥१३-८९-१५॥
imaṃ śrāddhavidhiṃ śrutvā śaśabindus tathākarot। akleśenājayac cāpi mahīṃ so'nuśaśāsa ha ॥13-89-15॥
[इमं (imaṃ) - this; श्राद्धविधिं (śrāddhavidhiṃ) - śrāddha procedure; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; शशबिन्दुः (śaśabinduḥ) - Śaśabindu (proper noun); तथा (tathā) - thus; अकरोत् (akarot) - did; अक्लेशेन (akleśena) - without difficulty; अजयत् (ajayat) - conquered; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; महीं (mahīṃ) - earth; सः (saḥ) - he; अनुशशास (anuśaśāsa) - ruled; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(This śrāddha procedure having heard, Śaśabindu thus did; without difficulty and also conquered earth, he indeed ruled.)
Having heard this śrāddha procedure, Śaśabindu performed it in the same way; without difficulty, he also conquered the earth and indeed ruled it. (13-89-15)
