evaṃ tadā prayācantaṃ bhāskaraṃ munisattamaḥ। jamadagniḥ mahātejāḥ kiṃ kāryaṃ pratyapadyata ॥13-98-1॥

चलं निमित्तं विप्रर्षे सदा सूर्यस्य गच्छतः। कथं चलं वेत्स्यसि त्वं सदा यान्तं दिवाकरम् ॥१३-९८-४॥
calaṃ nimittaṃ viprarṣe sadā sūryasya gacchataḥ। kathaṃ calaṃ vetsyasi tvaṃ sadā yāntaṃ divā-karam ॥13-98-4॥

(Moving cause, O sage among the twice-born, always of the Sun going. How moving will you know, you, always going the giver of the day.)
O sage among the twice-born, the cause of movement is always with the journeying Sun. How will you, who always sees the Sun moving, know what is truly moving? (13-98-4)
जमदग्निरुवाच॥

स्थिरं वापि चलं वापि जाने त्वां ज्ञानचक्षुषा। अवश्यं विनयाधानं कार्यमद्य मया तव ॥१३-९८-५॥
sthiraṃ vāpi calaṃ vāpi jāne tvāṃ jñānacakṣuṣā। avaśyaṃ vinayādhānaṃ kāryam adya mayā tava ॥13-98-5॥
[स्थिरं (sthiraṃ) - fixed; stable; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - also; चलं (calaṃ) - moving; unstable; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - also; जाने (jāne) - I know; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; ज्ञानचक्षुषा (jñānacakṣuṣā) - with the eye of knowledge; अवश्यं (avaśyaṃ) - necessarily; विनयाधानं (vinayādhānam) - bestowal of respect; कार्यं (kāryam) - to be done; अद्य (adya) - today; मया (mayā) - by me; तव (tava) - to you;]
(Fixed or even moving or also, I know you with the eye of knowledge. Necessarily the bestowal of respect is to be done today by me to you.)
Whether fixed or moving, I recognize you with the eye of knowledge. Today it is necessary for me to offer you respect. (13-98-5)
अपराह्णे निमेषार्धं तिष्ठसि त्वं दिवाकर। तत्र वेत्स्यामि सूर्य त्वां न मेऽत्रास्ति विचारणा ॥१३-९८-६॥
aparāhṇe nimeṣārdhaṃ tiṣṭhasi tvaṃ divākara। tatra vetsyāmi sūrya tvāṃ na me'trāsti vicāraṇā ॥13-98-6॥
[अपराह्णे (aparāhṇe) - in the afternoon; निमेषार्धं (nimeṣārdham) - for half a blink (moment); तिष्ठसि (tiṣṭhasi) - you remain; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; दिवाकर (divākara) - O sun (maker of the day); तत्र (tatra) - then; वेत्स्यामि (vetsyāmi) - I will know; सूर्य (sūrya) - O Sun; त्वां (tvām) - you; न (na) - not; मे (me) - for me; अत्र (atra) - here; अस्ति (asti) - there is; विचारणा (vicāraṇā) - doubt, consideration;]
(In the afternoon for half a moment you remain, you, O Sun (divākara). Then I will know you, O Sun; for me, here there is no doubt.)
O Sun, in the afternoon you remain only for half a moment. There I shall know you—O Sun, for me there is no doubt about this. (13-98-6)

[असंशयं (asaṃśayaṃ) - without doubt; माम् (mām) - me; विप्रर्षे (viprarṣe) - O sage among Brahmins; वेत्स्यसे (vetsyase) - you will know; धन्विनां (dhanvināṃ) - of bowmen; वर (vara) - best; अपकारिणं (apakāriṇam) - harming; तु (tu) - but; माम् (mām) - me; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O venerable one; शरणागतम् (śaraṇāgatam) - one who has sought refuge;]
(Without doubt, me, O sage among Brahmins, you will know, O best of bowmen. Harming, but me, know, O venerable one, as one who has sought refuge.)
O sage among Brahmins, without doubt, you will know me, O best of bowmen. But, O venerable one, know me—even though I have caused harm—as one who has sought refuge. (13-98-7)

(Then, having laughed, the venerable Jamadagni said to him: "Not fear, O Sūrya, by you is (to be made); (since he) has indeed gone to submission, you are." (13-98-8))

ब्राह्मणेष्वार्जवं यच्च स्थैर्यं च धरणीतले। सौम्यतां चैव सोमस्य गाम्भीर्यं वरुणस्य च ॥१३-९८-९॥
brāhmaṇeṣv ārjavaṃ yac ca sthairyaṃ ca dharaṇītale | saumyatāṃ caiva somasya gāmbhīryaṃ varuṇasya ca ॥13-98-9॥
[ब्राह्मणेषु (brāhmaṇeṣu) - in the Brāhmaṇas; आर्जवं (ārjavam) - straightforwardness; यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; स्थैर्यं (sthairyaṃ) - steadfastness; च (ca) - and; धरणीतले (dharaṇī-tale) - on the surface of the earth; सौम्यतां (saumyatām) - gentleness; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सोमस्य (somasya) - of Soma; गाम्भीर्यं (gāmbhīryam) - depth; वरुणस्य (varuṇasya) - of Varuṇa; च (ca) - and;]
(In the Brāhmaṇas, the straightforwardness which and the steadfastness and on the surface of the earth; the gentleness indeed of Soma and the depth of Varuṇa and.)

दीप्तिमग्नेः प्रभां मेरोः प्रतापं तपनस्य च। एतान्यतिक्रमेद्यो वै स हन्याच्छरणागतम् ॥१३-९८-१०॥
dīptim agneḥ prabhāṃ meroḥ pratāpaṃ tapanasya ca। etāni atikramet yaḥ vai saḥ hanyāt śaraṇāgatam॥13-98-10॥
[दीप्तिम् (dīptim) - splendor; अग्नेः (agneḥ) - of Agni (fire); प्रभाम् (prabhām) - lustre; मेरोः (meroḥ) - of Meru (the mountain); प्रतापम् (pratāpam) - radiance; तपनस्य (tapanasya) - of Tapan (the sun); च (ca) - and; एतानि (etāni) - these; अतिक्रमेत् (atikramet) - should overstep; यः (yaḥ) - who; वै (vai) - indeed; सः (saḥ) - he; हन्यात् (hanyāt) - should kill; शरणागतम् (śaraṇāgatam) - one who has sought refuge;]
(The splendor of Agni, the radiance of Meru, the heat of the sun also—these who indeed should overstep, he should kill one who has sought refuge.)
One who surpasses the splendor of Agni, the radiance of Meru, and the heat of the sun—such a person, indeed, should kill someone who has come for refuge. (13-98-10)
भवेत्स गुरुतल्पी च ब्रह्महा च तथा भवेत्। सुरापानं च कुर्यात्स यो हन्याच्छरणागतम् ॥१३-९८-११॥
bhavets gurutalpī ca brahmahā ca tathā bhavet। surāpānaṃ ca kuryāts yo hanyāccharaṇāgatam॥13-98-11॥
[भवेत् (bhavet) - one becomes; स (sa) - he; गुरुतल्पी (gurutalpī) - one who sleeps with the teacher's wife; च (ca) - and; ब्रह्महा (brahmahā) - slayer of a Brāhmaṇa; च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - thus; भवेत् (bhavet) - he becomes; सुरापानं (surāpānam) - drinker of intoxicating liquor; च (ca) - and; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - would perform; सः (saḥ) - he; यः (yaḥ) - who; हन्यात् (hanyāt) - would slay; शरणागतम् (śaraṇāgatam) - one who has taken refuge;]
(He becomes one who sleeps with the teacher's wife and a slayer of a Brāhmaṇa, and thus he becomes. And a drinker of intoxicating liquor he would be, who would slay one who has taken refuge.)
He is regarded as one who sleeps with his teacher's wife, a Brāhmaṇa-slayer, or a drinker of intoxicating liquor, who slays someone that has sought refuge. (13-98-11)
एतस्य त्वपनीतस्य समाधिं तात चिन्तय। यथा सुखगमः पन्था भवेत्त्वद्रश्मितापितः ॥१३-९८-१२॥
etasya tv apanītasya samādhiṁ tāta cintaya। yathā sukhagamaḥ panthā bhavet tvad-raśmi-tāpitaḥ॥13-98-12॥
[एतस्य (etasya) - of this; त्व (tv) - but; अपनीतस्य (apanītasya) - having been removed; समाधिं (samādhiṁ) - solution; तात (tāta) - O dear; चिन्तय (cintaya) - consider; यथा (yathā) - so that; सुखगमः (sukhagamaḥ) - easily accessible; पन्था (panthā) - path; भवेत् (bhavet) - may become; त्वद्रश्मितापितः (tvad-raśmi-tāpitaḥ) - warmed by your rays;]
(Of this but having been removed, solution, O dear, consider; so that easily accessible path may become, warmed by your rays.)
O dear, consider the solution to removing this, so that the path, warmed by your rays, may become easily accessible. (13-98-12)

[एतावत्-उक्त्वा (etāvat-uktvā) - having spoken thus; सः (saḥ) - he; तदा (tadā) - then; तूष्णीम्-आसीत् (tūṣṇīm-āsīt) - remained silent; भृगूद्वहः (bhṛgūdvahaḥ) - O best of Bhṛgus; (vocative, addressing a Bhṛgu) अथ (atha) - then; सूर्यः (sūryaḥ) - the Sun; ददौ (dadau) - gave; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; छत्र-उपानहम् (chatra-upānaham) - a parasol and sandals; आशु (āśu) - quickly; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(Having spoken thus, he then, O best of Bhṛgus, remained silent. Then the Sun quickly gave to him a parasol and sandals indeed.)

maharṣe śirasas trāṇaṁ chatraṁ madraśmivāraṇam। pratigṛhṇīṣva padbhyāṁ ca trāṇārthaṁ carmapāduke ॥13-98-14॥
[महर्षे (maharṣe) - O great sage; शिरसस्त्राणं (śirasas-trāṇam) - head-protection; छत्रं (chatram) - umbrella; मद्रश्मिवारणम् (madraśmi-vāraṇam) - warding off the sun's rays; प्रतिगृह्णीष्व (pratigṛhṇīṣva) - accept; पद्भ्यां (padbhyām) - for the feet; च (ca) - and; त्राणार्थं (trāṇārtham) - for the purpose of protection; चर्मपादुके (carma-pāduke) - leather sandals;]
(O great sage, head-protection, umbrella, warding off the sun's rays; accept for the feet also, for protection, leather sandals.)
O great sage, please accept this head-protection—the umbrella that wards off the sun's rays—and for your feet, these leather sandals for protection. (13-98-14)
अद्यप्रभृति चैवैतल्लोके सम्प्रचरिष्यति। पुण्यदानेषु सर्वेषु परमक्षय्यमेव च ॥१३-९८-१५॥
adyaprabhr̥ti caivaitalloke sampracar iṣyati. puṇyadāneṣu sarveṣu paramakṣayyameva ca ॥13-98-15॥

(From today onward and indeed this in the world will become prevalent. In all righteous gifts, the supremely imperishable indeed and also.)
From today onward, indeed, this will become prevalent in the world; in all acts of pious giving, it will be the supremely imperishable. (13-98-15)

तस्मात्प्रयच्छ विप्रेभ्यश्छत्रोपानहमुत्तमम्। धर्मस्ते सुमहान्भावी न मेऽत्रास्ति विचारणा ॥१३-९८-१७॥
tasmāt-prayaccha viprebhyaś-chatropānaham-uttamam। dharmas-te sumahān-bhāvī na me'trāsti vicāraṇā ॥13-98-17॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; from that; on that account; प्रयच्छ (prayaccha) - give; offer; विप्रेभ्यः (viprebhyaḥ) - to the brāhmaṇas; to the wise; छत्रोपानहम् (chatropānaham) - umbrella and footwear; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - excellent; highest; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; virtue; duty; ते (te) - for you; to you; सुमहान् (sumahān) - very great; exceedingly great; भावी (bhāvī) - will be; is about to be; न (na) - not; मे (me) - for me; to me; अत्र (atra) - here; in this matter; अस्ति (asti) - is; exists; विचारणा (vicāraṇā) - consideration; deliberation;]
(Therefore, give to the brāhmaṇas the excellent umbrella and footwear. Righteousness for you will be very great; for me, here, there is no consideration.)
Therefore, give the excellent umbrella and footwear to the brāhmaṇas. The righteousness you gain will be exceedingly great; for me, in this matter, there is no deliberation. (13-98-17)
छत्रं हि भरतश्रेष्ठ यः प्रदद्याद्द्विजातये। शुभ्रं शतशलाकं वै स प्रेत्य सुखमेधते ॥१३-९८-१८॥

(Umbrella indeed, O best of the Bharatas, who would give to a twice-born, white, with a hundred ribs indeed, he having departed attains happiness.)

दह्यमानाय विप्राय यः प्रयच्छत्युपानहौ। स्नातकाय महाबाहो संशिताय द्विजातये ॥१३-९८-२०॥
dahyamānāya viprāya yaḥ prayacchatyupānahau। snātakāya mahābāho saṃśitāya dvijātaye॥13-98-20॥
[दह्यमानाय (dahyamānāya) - to one who is suffering from burning (heat); विप्राय (viprāya) - to the brāhmaṇa; यः (yaḥ) - who; प्रयच्छति (prayacchati) - gives; उपानहौ (upānahau) - a pair of sandals; स्नातकाय (snātakāya) - to a graduate (initiated after completing brahmacarya); महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O strong-armed one; संशिताय (saṃśitāya) - to one controlled/firm in vows; द्विजातये (dvijātaye) - to a twice-born;]
(To one who is suffering from burning, to the brāhmaṇa, whoever gives a pair of sandals, to a graduate (snātaka), O strong-armed one, to one controlled in vows, to a twice-born (dvija).)
O strong-armed one, whoever gives a pair of sandals to a brāhmaṇa who is suffering from burning, to a snātaka (graduate), to a twice-born who is firm in vows— (13-98-20)
सोऽपि लोकानवाप्नोति दैवतैरभिपूजितान्। गोलोके स मुदा युक्तो वसति प्रेत्य भारत ॥१३-९८-२१॥
so'pi lokān avāpnoti daivataiḥ abhipūjitān। goloke sa mudā yukto vasati pretya bhārata॥13-98-21॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अपि (api) - also; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - attains; दैवतैः (daivataiḥ) - by the deities; अभिपूजितान् (abhipūjitān) - highly honored; गोलोके (goloke) - in Goloka; सः (saḥ) - he; मुदा (mudā) - with joy; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - united; वसति (vasati) - dwells; प्रेत्य (pretya) - after departing; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata (descendant of Bharata);]
(He also attains worlds highly honored by the deities. In Goloka, he, united with joy, dwells after departing, O Bhārata.)
He too attains the worlds highly revered by the gods; he dwells joyfully in Goloka after leaving this body, O Bhārata. (13-98-21)
एतत्ते भरतश्रेष्ठ मया कार्त्स्न्येन कीर्तितम्। छत्रोपानहदानस्य फलं भरतसत्तम ॥१३-९८-२२॥
etat te bharata-śreṣṭha mayā kārtsnyena kīrtitam। chatra-upānaha-dānasya phalaṃ bharata-sattama ॥13-98-22॥
[एतत् (etat) (etat) - this; ते (te) (te) - to you; भरतश्रेष्ठ (bharataśreṣṭha) (bharata-śreṣṭha) - O best of the Bharatas; मया (mayā) (mayā) - by me; कार्त्स्न्येन (kārtsnyena) (kārtsnyena) - in entirety; कीर्तितम् (kīrtitam) (kīrtitam) - has been declared; छत्र (chatra) (chatra) - umbrella; उपानह (upānaha) (upānaha) - footwear; दानस्य (dānasya) (dānasya) - of the gift; फलम् (phalam) (phalam) - fruit (result); भरतसत्तम (bharatasattama) (bharata-sattama) - O foremost among the Bharatas;]
(This to you, O best of the Bharatas, by me in entirety has been declared; of umbrella and footwear gift the fruit, O foremost among the Bharatas.)
O best of the Bharatas, I have now declared to you in full the fruit of giving an umbrella and footwear, O foremost among the Bharatas. (13-98-22)
