dānaṃ bahuvidhākāraṃ śāntiḥ satyama-hiṃsatā। svadāratuṣṭiś-coktā te phalaṃ dānasya caiva yat ॥13-106-1॥
[दानं (dānam) - gift; offering; बहुविधाकारं (bahuvidhākāram) - of many kinds of forms; various forms; शान्तिः (śāntiḥ) - peace; सत्यम् (satyam) - truth; अहिंसता (ahiṃsatā) - non-injury; non-violence; स्वदारतुष्टिः (svadāratuṣṭiḥ) - contentment with one's own wife; च (ca) - and; उक्ता (uktā) - have been spoken; declared; ते (te) - these; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; result; दानस्य (dānasya) - of giving; of charity; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; यत् (yat) - which;]
(Gift of many kinds of forms, peace, truth, non-injury, and contentment with one's own wife—these have been declared the fruit of giving and indeed that which;)
Gift given in many forms, peace, truth, non-violence, and contentment with one's own wife—these are declared to be the fruit of charity and indeed that (which arises therefrom). (13-106-1)
पितामहस्य विदितं किमन्यत्र तपोबलात्। तपसो यत्परं तेऽद्य तन्मे व्याख्यातुमर्हसि ॥१३-१०६-२॥
pitāmahasya viditaṃ kimanyatra tapobalāt। tapaso yatparaṃ te'dya tanme vyākhyātumarhasi॥13-106-2॥

तपः प्रचक्षते यावत्तावल्लोका युधिष्ठिर। मतं मम तु कौन्तेय तपो नानशनात्परम् ॥१३-१०६-३॥
tapaḥ pracakṣate yāvat-tāval-lokā yudhiṣṭhira। mataṃ mama tu kaunteya tapo nān-aśanāt param ॥13-106-3॥
[तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; प्रचक्षते (pracakṣate) - they declare; यावत् (yāvat) - as long as; तावत् (tāvat) - so long; लोका (lokā) - the worlds; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhiṣṭhira; मतं (mataṃ) - opinion; मम (mama) - my; तु (tu) - but; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - son of Kunti; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; न (na) - not; अनशनात् (anaśanāt) - from fasting; परम् (param) - superior;]
(Austerity they declare, as long so long as are the worlds, O Yudhiṣṭhira. My opinion, but, O son of Kunti, austerity is not from fasting superior.)
O Yudhiṣṭhira, people declare austerity to be as long-lasting as the worlds themselves; but in my opinion, O son of Kunti, austerity is not superior to fasting. (13-106-3)
अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम्। भगीरथस्य संवादं ब्रह्मणश्च महात्मनः ॥१३-१०६-४॥
atrāpy udāharantīmam itihāsaṃ purātanam। bhagīrathasya saṃvādaṃ brahmaṇaś ca mahātmanaḥ ॥13-106-4॥

तं दृष्ट्वा स वचः प्राह ब्रह्मा राजन्भगीरथम्। कथं भगीरथागास्त्वमिमं देशं दुरासदम् ॥१३-१०६-६॥

Seeing him, Brahmā spoke these words to Bhagīratha: "O king, how have you, Bhagīratha, come to this place which is difficult to approach?" (13-106-6)
न हि देवा न गन्धर्वा न मनुष्या भगीरथ। आयान्त्यतप्ततपसः कथं वै त्वमिहागतः ॥१३-१०६-७॥
na hi devā na gandharvā na manuṣyā bhagīratha। āyāntyataptatapasaḥ kathaṁ vai tvamihāgataḥ ॥13-106-7॥

niḥśaṅkam annam adadaṃ brāhmaṇebhyaḥ; śataṃ sahasrāṇi sadaiva dānam। brāhmaṃ vrataṃ nityam āsthāya viddhi; na tvevāhaṃ tasya phalād ihāgām ॥13-106-8॥

(Without doubt, food I gave to the Brāhmaṇas; hundred thousands always gifts. Of Brahman vow always having undertaken, know; not indeed I, of that from the fruit here I have come.)
I gave food without doubt to the Brāhmaṇas; hundreds of thousands in gifts at all times. Know that I always undertook the Brahmanical vow; but indeed, I have not come here as a result of its fruit. (13-106-8)
दशैकरात्रान्दश पञ्चरात्रा; नेकादशैकादशकान्क्रतूंश्च। ज्योतिष्टोमानां च शतं यदिष्टं; फलेन तेनापि च नागतोऽहम् ॥१३-१०६-९॥
daśaika-rātrān daśa pañca-rātrā; ekādaśaika-daśakān kratūṁś ca। jyotiṣṭomānāṁ ca śataṁ yad iṣṭaṁ; phalena tenāpi ca nāgato'ham ॥13-106-9॥
[दशैकरात्रान् (daśaika-rātrān) - ten eka-rātras (sacrifices lasting one night); दश (daśa) - ten; (see above sandhi) पञ्चरात्रा (pañca-rātrā) - pañca-rātras (sacrifices of five nights); नेकादश (ekādaśa) - eleven; (see next word for compound) एकादशकान् (ekādaśakān) - eka-daśakān (sets of eleven); क्रतूंश् (kratūṁś) - sacrifices; च (ca) - and; ज्योतिष्टोमानाम् (jyotiṣṭomānām) - jyotiṣṭoma sacrifices; च (ca) - and; शतम् (śatam) - a hundred; यदिष्टम् (yad iṣṭam) - that which is offered; फलेन (phalena) - by the fruit; by the result; तेन (tena) - by that; अपि (api) - even; also; च (ca) - and; नागतः (nāgataḥ) - have not obtained; अहम् (aham) - I;]

I performed ten eka-rātra sacrifices, ten pañca-rātra sacrifices, sets of eleven sacrifices, and many sacrifices as well. Even with the result of a hundred jyotiṣṭoma sacrifices, whatever was offered, I have not attained (the desired result). (13-106-9)
यच्चावसं जाह्नवीतीरनित्यः; शतं समास्तप्यमानस्तपोऽहम्। अदां च तत्राश्वतरीसहस्रं; नारीपुरं न च तेनाहमागाम् ॥१३-१०६-१०॥
yaccāvasaṃ jāhnavītīranityaḥ; śataṃ samāstapyamānastapo'ham। adāṃ ca tatrāśvatarīsahasraṃ; nārīpuraṃ na ca tenāhamāgām॥13-106-10॥
[यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; अवसं (avasaṃ) - I dwelt; जाह्नवी-तीर-नित्यः (jāhnavī-tīra-nityaḥ) - constantly on the bank of the Jāhnavī (Gaṅgā); शतं (śatam) - hundred; समाः (samāḥ) - years; तप्यमानः (tapyamānaḥ) - practicing austerity; तपः (tapaḥ) - penance; अहम् (aham) - I; अदां (adāṃ) - I gave; च (ca) - and; तत्र (tatra) - there; अश्वतरी-सहस्रं (aśvatarī-sahasram) - a thousand she-mules; नारी-पुरं (nārī-puram) - city of women; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; तेन (tena) - by that; अहम् (aham) - I; आगाम् (āgām) - attained;]
(Which and I dwelt constantly on the bank of Jāhnavī; hundred years practicing penance I; I gave and there a thousand she-mules; city of women not and by that I attained.)
Though I dwelt constantly on the bank of the Jāhnavī (Gaṅgā), practiced penance for a hundred years, and gave a thousand she-mules there, I did not thereby attain the city of women. (13-106-10)
दशायुतानि चाश्वानामयुतानि च विंशतिम्। पुष्करेषु द्विजातिभ्यः प्रादां गाश्च सहस्रशः ॥१३-१०६-११॥
daśāyutāni cāśvānām ayutāni ca viṃśatim। puṣkareṣu dvijātibhyaḥ prādāṃ gāś ca sahasraśaḥ॥13-106-11॥
[दशायुतानि (daśāyutāni) - ten myriads; (100,000); च (ca) - and; अश्वानाम् (aśvānām) - of horses; अयुतानि (ayutāni) - ten thousands; (10,000); च (ca) - and; विंशतिम् (viṃśatim) - twenty; पुष्करेषु (puṣkareṣu) - at sacred ponds; द्विजातिभ्यः (dvijātibhyaḥ) - to the twice-born; (Brāhmaṇas, etc.); प्रादाम् (prādām) - I gave; गाः (gāḥ) - cows; च (ca) - and; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by thousands; (in thousands);]

सुवर्णचन्द्रोडुपधारिणीनां; कन्योत्तमानामददं स्रग्विणीनाम्। षष्टिं सहस्राणि विभूषितानां; जाम्बूनदैराभरणैर्न तेन ॥१३-१०६-१२॥
suvarṇacandroḍupadhāriṇīnāṃ; kanyottamānāmadadaṃ sragviṇīnām. ṣaṣṭiṃ sahasrāṇi vibhūṣitānāṃ; jāmbūnadairābharaṇairna tena ॥13-106-12॥
[सुवर्ण-चन्द्र-उडु-धारिणीनां (suvarṇa-candra-uḍu-dhāriṇīnām) - of those wearing golden, moon, and star (ornaments); कन्य-उत्तमानाम् (kanya-uttamānām) - of the best maidens; अददं (adadaṃ) - I gave; स्रग्विणीनाम् (sragviṇīnām) - of garlanded ones; षष्टिं (ṣaṣṭim) - sixty; सहस्राणि (sahasrāṇi) - thousands; विभूषितानाम् (vibhūṣitānām) - of adorned (ones); जाम्बूनदैः (jāmbūnadaiḥ) - with gold (by Jāmbūnada river); आभरणैः (ābharaṇaiḥ) - by ornaments; न तेन (na tena) - not by him;]
(Of those wearing golden, moon, and star (ornaments); of the best maidens, of garlanded ones, I gave. Sixty thousands of adorned ones, with gold ornaments, not by him.)

दशार्बुदान्यददं गोसवेज्या; स्वेकैकशो दश गा लोकनाथ। समानवत्साः पयसा समन्विताः; सुवर्णकांस्योपदुहा न तेन ॥१३-१०६-१३॥
daśārbudānyadadaṁ gosavejyā; svekaikaśo daśa gā lokanātha। samānavatsāḥ payasā samanvitāḥ; suvarṇakāṁsyopaduhā na tena ॥13-106-13॥
[दशार्बुदानि (daśārbudāni) - ten arbudas (one arbuda = ten crores); अददं (adadaṁ) - I gave; गोसवे (gosave) - for the gosava sacrifice; इज्या (ijyā) - ritual offering; स्वेकैकशः (svekaikaśaḥ) - each in his own way, one by one; दश (daśa) - ten; गा (gā) - cows; लोकनाथ (lokanātha) - O lord of the world; समानवत्साः (samānavatsāḥ) - having similar calves; पयसा (payasā) - with milk; समन्विताः (samanvitāḥ) - endowed; सुवर्णकांस्योपदुहा (suvarṇakāṁsyopaduhā) - having golden and bronze vessels for milking; न (na) - not; तेन (tena) - by him (that);]

I gave ten arbuda (ten billion) for the gosava sacrifice; O lord of the world, ten cows each, each having similar calves, filled with milk, and milked into golden and bronze vessels, were not given by him. (13-106-13)
अप्तोर्यामेषु नियतमेकैकस्मिन्दशाददम्। गृष्टीनां क्षीरदात्रीणां रोहिणीनां न तेन च ॥१३-१०६-१४॥
aptor-yāmeṣu niyatam ekaikasmin daśād adam। gṛṣṭīnām kṣīra-dātrīṇām rohiṇīnām na tena ca ॥13-106-14॥
[अप्तोर्यामेषु (aptor-yāmeṣu) - among aptoryāmas; (a type of Soma ritual); नियतम् (niyatam) - fixed; prescribed; एकैकस्मिन् (ekaikasmin) - in each-one; दशात् (daśāt) - from ten; अदम् (adam) - I ate; (or: consumed; received;) गृष्टीनां (gṛṣṭīnām) - of the gṛṣṭī cows; क्षीरदात्रीणां (kṣīra-dātrīṇām) - of those giving milk; रोहिणीनां (rohiṇīnām) - of the Rohiṇī cows; न (na) - not; तेन (tena) - by that; च (ca) - and;]

During the aptoryāma rituals, I partook ten times in each as prescribed; but not of the gṛṣṭī cows, nor of the milk-giving Rohiṇī cows, by that (act).
दोग्ध्रीणां वै गवां चैव प्रयुतानि दशैव ह। प्रादां दशगुणं ब्रह्मन्न च तेनाहमागतः ॥१३-१०६-१५॥
dogdhrīṇāṁ vai gavāṁ caiva prayutāni daśaiva ha। prādāṁ daśaguṇaṁ brahman na ca tenāhamāgataḥ॥13-106-15॥
[दोग्ध्रीणां (dogdhrīṇāṁ) - of milk-yielding cows; वै (vai) - indeed; गवां (gavāṁ) - of cows; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - certainly; प्रयुतानि (prayutāni) - one million (ten lakhs, a numerical value); दश (daśa) - ten; एव (eva) - indeed; ह (ha) - verily; प्रादां (prādāṁ) - I have given; दशगुणं (daśaguṇaṁ) - tenfold; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; तेन (tena) - by that; अहम् (aham) - I; आगतः (āgataḥ) - have attained; ॥१३-१०६-१५॥ (13-106-15) -;]
(Of milk-yielding cows indeed, and of cows certainly, ten millions indeed verily I have given; O Brahman, tenfold, and not by that I have attained.)
I have indeed given ten million milk-yielding cows, O Brahman, even ten times that number, and yet I have not thereby attained (my goal). (13-106-15)
वाजिनां बाह्लिजातानामयुतान्यददं दश। कर्काणां हेममालानां न च तेनाहमागतः ॥१३-१०६-१६॥
vājināṃ bāhlijātānāmayutānyadadaṃ daśa। karkāṇāṃ hemamālānāṃ na ca tenāhamāgataḥ॥13-106-16॥
[वाजिनां (vājinām) - of horses; बाह्लिजातानाम् (bāhlijātānām) - of those born in Bāhlīka; अयुतानि (ayutāni) - ten thousands; अददं (adadaṃ) - I gave; दश (daśa) - ten; कर्काणाम् (karkāṇām) - of necklaces; हेममालानाम् (hemamālānām) - of golden garlands; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; तेन (tena) - by that; अहम् (aham) - I; आगतः (āgataḥ) - have come;]

I gave ten ten-thousand horses born in Bāhlīka, and necklaces of golden garlands, but still, I have not attained (what I sought) by that. (13-106-16)
कोटीश्च काञ्चनस्याष्टौ प्रादां ब्रह्मन्दश त्वहम्। एकैकस्मिन्क्रतौ तेन फलेनाहं न चागतः ॥१३-१०६-१७॥
koṭīś ca kāñcanasyāṣṭau prādāṃ brahman daśa tv aham। ekaikasmin kratau tena phalenāhaṃ na cāgataḥ ॥13-106-17॥

O Brahman, I gave crores and eight pieces of gold; ten to you. In each sacrifice, with that result, I have not come (here). (13-106-17)
वाजिनां श्यामकर्णानां हरितानां पितामह। प्रादां हेमस्रजां ब्रह्मन्कोटीर्दश च सप्त च ॥१३-१०६-१८॥
vājināṃ śyāmakarṇānāṃ haritānāṃ pitāmaha। prādāṃ hemasrajāṃ brahman koṭīr daśa ca sapta ca ॥13-106-18॥

dīrghakālaṃ himavati gaṅgāyāś ca durutsahām। mūrdhnā dhārāṃ mahādevaḥ śirasā yāṃ adhārayat॥ na tenāpy aham āgacchaṃ phalena iha pitāmaha॥13-106-26॥

(For a long time on Himavat, even of Gaṅgā, hard to bear, with (his) head the stream Mahādeva with (his) head which held up. Not even by that I attained the fruit here, O Grandfather.)
On Mount Himavat, for a long time, Mahādeva held up with his head the difficult-to-bear stream of Gaṅgā; yet even by that, O Grandfather, I did not attain the fruit here. (13-106-26)
शम्याक्षेपैरयजं यच्च देवा; न्सद्यस्कानामयुतैश्चापि यत्तत्। त्रयोदशद्वादशाहांश्च देव; सपौण्डरीकान्न च तेषां फलेन ॥१३-१०६-२७॥
śamyākṣepair ayajaṃ yac ca devāḥ; n sadyaskānām ayutaiś cāpi yat tat। trayodaśa-dvādaśāhāṃś ca deva; sa pauṇḍarīkān na ca teṣāṃ phalena ॥13-106-27॥

O gods, whatever sacrifices I did not perform by throwing wooden poles, and even those sadyaska rites by tens of thousands, and the thirteen-day and twelve-day sacrifices, and those performed with white lotus flowers, none of these brought the desired fruit for them. (13-106-27)
अष्टौ सहस्राणि ककुद्मिनामहं; शुक्लर्षभाणामददं ब्राह्मणेभ्यः। एकैकं वै काञ्चनं शृङ्गमेभ्यः; पत्नीश्चैषामददं निष्ककण्ठीः ॥१३-१०६-२८॥

Even though I untiringly gave hundreds upon hundreds of cattle and, having performed many great sacrifices, bestowed them on the Brāhmaṇas, by that (alone) it was not (accomplished). (13-106-30)
एकादशाहैरयजं सदक्षिणै; र्द्विर्द्वादशाहैरश्वमेधैश्च देव। आर्कायणैः षोडशभिश्च ब्रह्मं; स्तेषां फलेनेह न चागतोऽस्मि ॥१३-१०६-३१॥

निष्कैककण्ठमददं योजनायतं; तद्विस्तीर्णं काञ्चनपादपानाम्। वनं चूतानां रत्नविभूषितानां; न चैव तेषामागतोऽहं फलेन ॥१३-१०६-३२॥
niṣkaikakaṇṭhamadadaṃ yojanāyataṃ; tadvistīrṇaṃ kāñcanapādapānām. vanaṃ cūtānāṃ ratnavibhūṣitānām. na caiva teṣāmāgato'haṃ phalena ॥13-106-32॥

(Of the milk-giving, then of the red (cows); likewise and also of those not milked, O lord of the people; I gave always to the Brāhmaṇas, O lord of the gods; not here come by that with fruit and I.)
O lord of the people, I have always given milk-giving cows, red cows, and even those not yet milked to the Brāhmaṇas, O lord of the gods; yet I have not attained any fruit from that here. (13-106-34)
त्रिंशदग्निमहं ब्रह्मन्नयजं यच्च नित्यदा। अष्टाभिः सर्वमेधैश्च नरमेधैश्च सप्तभिः ॥१३-१०६-३५॥
triṃśad agnim ahaṃ brahman nayajaṃ yac ca nityadā| aṣṭābhiḥ sarvamedhaiś ca naramedhaiś ca saptabhiḥ ॥13-106-35॥
[त्रिंशद् (triṃśad) - thirty; अग्निम् (agnim) - agni-sacrifice; अहम् (aham) - I; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahmin; अयजम् (ayajam) - I have performed; यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; नित्यदा (nityadā) - always; अष्टाभिः (aṣṭābhiḥ) - with eight; सर्वमेधैः (sarvamedhaiḥ) - Sarvamedha-sacrifices; च (ca) - and; नरमेधैः (naramedhaiḥ) - Naramedha-sacrifices; च (ca) - and; सप्तभिः (saptabhiḥ) - with seven;]
(Thirty agni-sacrifices I, O Brahmin, have performed, and which always; with eight Sarvamedha-sacrifices and with seven Naramedha-sacrifices and.)
O Brahmin, I have performed thirty agni-sacrifices, always performed them, along with eight Sarvamedha-sacrifices and seven Naramedha-sacrifices. (13-106-35)
दशभिर्विश्वजिद्भिश्च शतैरष्टादशोत्तरैः। न चैव तेषां देवेश फलेनाहमिहागतः ॥१३-१०६-३६॥
daśabhirviśvajidbhiśca śatairaṣṭādaśottaraiḥ। na caiva teṣāṃ deveśa phalenāhamihāgataḥ ॥13-106-36॥
[दशभिः (daśabhiḥ) - with ten; विश्वजिद्भिः (viśvajidbhiḥ) - with viśvajit sacrifices; च (ca) - and; शतैः (śataiḥ) - with hundreds; अष्टादशोत्तरैः (aṣṭādaśottaraiḥ) - and with those exceeding by eighteen; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of those; देवेश (deveśa) - O lord of the gods; फलेन (phalena) - with the fruit; अहम् (aham) - I; इह (iha) - here; आगतः (āgataḥ) - have come;]
(With ten, and with viśvajit sacrifices, and with hundreds, and with those exceeding by eighteen, not and indeed of those, O lord of the gods, with the fruit, I, here, have come.)
O lord of the gods, I have come here not for the fruit (results) of those ten viśvajit sacrifices, nor for the hundreds (performed) that exceeded by eighteen. (13-106-36)
सरय्वां बाहुदायां च गङ्गायामथ नैमिषे। गवां शतानामयुतमददं न च तेन वै ॥१३-१०६-३७॥
sarayvāṃ bāhudāyāṃ ca gaṅgāyām atha naimiṣe। gavāṃ śatānām ayutam adadaṃ na ca tena vai॥13-106-37॥
[सरय्वां (sarayvāṃ) - in the Sarayū (river); बाहुदायां (bāhudāyāṃ) - in the Bāhudā (river); च (ca) - and; गङ्गायाम् (gaṅgāyām) - in the Gaṅgā (Ganges river); अथ (atha) - then; नैमिषे (naimiṣe) - in Naimiṣa (sacred place); गवां (gavāṃ) - of cows; शतानाम् (śatānām) - of hundreds; अयुतम् (ayutam) - ten-thousand; अददं (adadaṃ) - I gave; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; तेन (tena) - by that; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(In the Sarayū, Bāhudā, and also in the Gaṅgā, then in Naimiṣa, hundreds of cows, ten-thousand, I gave, and not by that indeed.)

इन्द्रेण गुह्यं निहितं वै गुहायां; यद्भार्गवस्तपसेहाभ्यविन्दत्। जाज्वल्यमानमुशनस्तेजसेह; तत्साधयामास महं वरेण्यम् ॥१३-१०६-३८॥
indreṇa guhyaṃ nihitaṃ vai guhāyāṃ; yadbhārgavastapasehābhyavindat. jājvalyamānamuśanastejaseha; tatsādhayāmāsa mahaṃ vareṇyam ॥13-106-38॥
[इन्द्रेण (indreṇa) - by Indra; गुह्यं (guhyam) - the secret; निहितं (nihitam) - placed; वै (vai) - indeed; गुहायां (guhāyām) - in the cave; यत् (yat) - which; भार्गवः (bhārgavaḥ) - Bhārgava (Paraśurāma); तपसा (tapasā) - by penance; इह (iha) - here; अभ्यविन्दत् (abhyavindat) - discovered; जाज्वल्यमानम् (jājvalyamānam) - blazing; उशनः (uśanaḥ) - Uśanas (Śukra); तेजसा (tejasā) - with splendor; इह (iha) - here; तत् (tat) - that; साधयामास (sādhayāmāsa) - accomplished; महं (maham) - great; वरेण्यम् (vareṇyam) - most excellent;]
(By Indra the secret placed indeed in the cave, which Bhārgava by penance here discovered. Blazing Uśanas with splendor here; that he accomplished, the great, most excellent.)
The secret that was placed by Indra in the cave—this Bhārgava discovered here by penance. Uśanas, blazing with splendor here, accomplished that great and most excellent (achievement). (13-106-38)
ततो मे ब्राह्मणास्तुष्टास्तस्मिन्कर्मणि साधिते। सहस्रमृषयश्चासन्ये वै तत्र समागताः ॥ उक्तस्तैरस्मि गच्छ त्वं ब्रह्मलोकमिति प्रभो ॥१३-१०६-३९॥
tato me brāhmaṇās tuṣṭās tasmin karmaṇi sādhite. sahasram ṛṣayaś cāsan ye vai tatra samāgatāḥ ॥ uktas tair asmi gaccha tvaṃ brahmalokam iti prabho ॥13-106-39॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; मे (me) - my; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - brāhmaṇas; तुष्टाः (tuṣṭāḥ) - were pleased; तस्मिन्कर्मणि (tasmin karmaṇi) - in that act; साधिते (sādhite) - having been accomplished; सहस्रम् (sahasram) - a thousand; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; च (ca) - and; आसन् (āsan) - were; ये (ye) - who; वै (vai) - indeed; तत्र (tatra) - there; समागताः (samāgatāḥ) - assembled; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; तैः (taiḥ) - by them; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; त्वम् (tvam) - you; ब्रह्मलोकम् (brahmalokam) - to Brahmaloka; इति (iti) - thus; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord;]
(Then my brāhmaṇas were pleased, in that act having been accomplished. A thousand sages also were there who indeed assembled. Addressed by them am I: "Go, you, to Brahmaloka," thus, O lord. (13-106-39))

प्रीतेनोक्तः सहस्रेण ब्राह्मणानामहं प्रभो। इमं लोकमनुप्राप्तो मा भूत्तेऽत्र विचारणा ॥१३-१०६-४०॥
prītenoktaḥ sahasreṇa brāhmaṇānāmahaṃ prabho। imaṃ lokamanuprāpto mā bhūtte'tra vicāraṇā ॥13-106-40॥
[प्रीतेन (prītena) - by affection; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - spoken; सहस्रेण (sahasreṇa) - by a thousand; ब्राह्मणानाम् (brāhmaṇānām) - of brāhmaṇas; अहम् (aham) - I; प्रभो (prabho) - O Lord; इमम् (imam) - this; लोकम् (lokam) - world; अनुप्राप्तः (anuprāptaḥ) - attained; मा (mā) - do not; भूत् (bhūt) - let there be; ते (te) - for you; अत्र (atra) - here; विचारणा (vicāraṇā) - consideration;]
(By affection spoken by a thousand of brāhmaṇas I, O Lord, this world attained. Do not let there be for you here consideration.)
O Lord, I have attained this world, spoken of by a thousand brāhmaṇas out of affection. Let there be no deliberation about this here for you. (13-106-40)
कामं यथावद्विहितं विधात्रा; पृष्टेन वाच्यं तु मया यथावत्। तपो हि नान्यच्चानशनान्मतं मे; नमोऽस्तु ते देववर प्रसीद ॥१३-१०६-४१॥
kāmaṁ yathāvad vihitaṁ vidhātrā; pṛṣṭena vācam tu mayā yathāvat। tapo hi nānyac cānaśanān mataṁ me; namo'stu te devavara prasīda॥13-106-41॥
[कामं (कामम्) (kāmaṁ) - indeed; यथावत् (yathāvat) - as is proper; विहितं (vihitaṁ) - done; established; विधात्रा (vidhātrā) - by the creator; पृष्टेन (pṛṣṭena) - being asked; वाच्यं (vācyam) - to be said; तु (tu) - but; मया (mayā) - by me; यथावत् (yathāvat) - according to what is proper; तपो (tapo) - austerity; हि (hi) - indeed; न (na) - not; अन्यत् (anyat) - other; च (ca) - and; अनशनात् (anaśanāt) - than not eating; fasting; मतं (mataṁ) - regarded; मे (me) - by me; नमः (namaḥ) - salutation; अस्तु (astu) - let there be; ते (te) - to you; देववर (devavara) - O best of gods; प्रसीद (prasīda) - be gracious;]
(Indeed, as is proper, done by the creator; what is to be said, being asked by me, I should say as is proper. Austerity, indeed, I regard nothing else than not eating. Let there be salutations to you, O best of gods, be gracious (13-106-41))
Whatever has been rightly established by the creator, indeed; and what I should say when asked, I must say properly. For austerity is, in my view, nothing other than fasting. Salutations to you, O best of gods—be gracious. (13-106-41)

ity-uktavantaṃ taṃ brahmā rājānaṃ sma bhagīratham. pūjayāmāsa pūjārhaṃ vidhidṛṣṭena karmaṇā ॥13-106-42॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तवन्तं (uktavantaṃ) - having spoken; तं (taṃ) - him; ब्रह्मा (brahmā) - Brahmā; राजानं (rājānam) - the king; स्म (sma) - indeed; भगीरथम् (bhagīratham) - Bhagīratha; पूजयामास (pūjayāmāsa) - he honored; पूजार्हं (pūjārhaṃ) - worthy of honor; विधिदृष्टेन (vidhidṛṣṭena) - as prescribed by rule; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by act;]
(Thus having spoken to him, Brahmā indeed (honored) the king Bhagīratha, honored (him) worthy of honor with an act prescribed by rule.)
Having thus spoken, Brahmā indeed honored King Bhagīratha as worthy of honor, by an act performed according to the prescribed rules. (13-106-42)
