Yudhiṣṭhira said.
यथा ज्येष्ठः कनिष्ठेषु वर्तते भरतर्षभ। कनिष्ठाश्च यथा ज्येष्ठे वर्तेरंस्तद्ब्रवीहि मे ॥१३-१०८-१॥
yathā jyeṣṭhaḥ kaniṣṭheṣu vartate bharatarṣabha। kaniṣṭhāś ca yathā jyeṣṭhe varteram̐s tad bravīhi me ॥13-108-1॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; in the manner; like; ज्येष्ठः (jyeṣṭhaḥ) - the eldest; senior; कनिष्ठेषु (kaniṣṭheṣu) - among the youngest; with the younger ones; वर्तते (vartate) - acts; behaves; exists; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas; O best of the Bharatas; कनिष्ठाः (kaniṣṭhāḥ) - the youngest; the younger ones; च (ca) - and; यथा (yathā) - as; like; ज्येष्ठे (jyeṣṭhe) - towards the eldest; with the eldest; वर्तेरन् (varteran) - would act; would behave; तत् (tad) - that; ब्रूहि (bravīhi) - tell; say; मे (me) - to me;]
(As the eldest among the younger ones acts, O bull among the Bharatas, and as the younger ones would act towards the eldest, that tell me.)
O best of the Bharatas, tell me how the eldest behaves among the youngest, and how the youngest ought to behave towards the eldest. (13-108-1)

ज्येष्ठवत्तात वर्तस्व ज्येष्ठो हि सततं भवान्। गुरोर्गरीयसी वृत्तिर्या चेच्छिष्यस्य भारत ॥१३-१०८-२॥
jyeṣṭhavat tāta vartasva jyeṣṭho hi satataṃ bhavān। guror garīyasī vṛttir yā cet śiṣyasya bhārata॥13-108-2॥
[ज्येष्ठवत् (jyeṣṭhavat) - like an elder; तात (tāta) - O dear (child); वर्तस्व (vartasva) - conduct yourself; ज्येष्ठः (jyeṣṭhaḥ) - elder (person); हि (hi) - indeed; सततम् (satatam) - always; भवान् (bhavān) - you; गुरोः (guroḥ) - of the teacher; गरीयसी (garīyasī) - greater; वृत्तिः (vṛttiḥ) - conduct; या (yā) - which; चेत् (cet) - if; शिष्यस्य (śiṣyasya) - of the student; भारत (bhārata) - O descendant of Bharata;]
(Like an elder, O dear, conduct yourself; you indeed are always the elder. Of the teacher, the greater conduct is that which is of the student, O Bharata.)
O dear, conduct yourself as you would like an elder; for you are always the elder. O Bharata, the student’s conduct, if it is greater than that of the teacher, is to be followed. (13-108-2)
न गुरावकृतप्रज्ञे शक्यं शिष्येण वर्तितुम्। गुरोर्हि दीर्घदर्शित्वं यत्तच्छिष्यस्य भारत ॥१३-१०८-३॥
na gurāv-akṛtaprajñe śakyaṃ śiṣyeṇa vartitum। guror hi dīrghadarśitvaṃ yat tac chiṣyasya bhārata ॥13-108-3॥
[न (na) - not; गुरौ-अकृतप्रज्ञे (gurau-akṛtaprajñe) - in a teacher lacking developed wisdom; शक्यं (śakyaṃ) - possible; शिष्येण (śiṣyeṇa) - by the disciple; वर्तितुम् (vartitum) - to conduct oneself; गुरोः (guror) - of the teacher; हि (hi) - indeed; दीर्घदर्शित्वं (dīrghadarśitvaṃ) - far-sightedness; यत् (yat) - which; तत् (tat) - that; शिष्यस्य (śiṣyasya) - of the disciple; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Not in a teacher lacking developed wisdom, possible by the disciple to conduct oneself. Of the teacher indeed, far-sightedness which, that (belongs to) the disciple, O Bhārata.)
It is not possible for a disciple to conduct himself under a teacher who lacks developed wisdom. For the far-sightedness that belongs to the teacher is (for) the disciple, O Bhārata. (13-108-3)
अन्धः स्यादन्धवेलायां जडः स्यादपि वा बुधः। परिहारेण तद्ब्रूयाद्यस्तेषां स्याद्व्यतिक्रमः ॥१३-१०८-४॥
andhaḥ syād andha-velāyāṃ jaḍaḥ syād api vā budhaḥ। parihāreṇa tad brūyād yaḥ teṣāṃ syād vyatikramaḥ ॥13-108-4॥
[अन्धः (andhaḥ) - blind person; स्यात् (syāt) - may be; अन्धवेलायाम् (andha-velāyām) - at the time/occasion of blindness; जडः (jaḍaḥ) - dull person; स्यात् (syāt) - may be; अपि (api) - even; वा (vā) - or; बुधः (budhaḥ) - wise person; परिहारेण (parihāreṇa) - by way of circumvention; तत् (tat) - that; ब्रूयात् (brūyāt) - should say; यः (yaḥ) - who; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; स्यात् (syāt) - may be; व्यतिक्रमः (vyatikramaḥ) - transgression;]
(A blind person may be at the time of blindness, a dull person may be or even a wise person; by circumvention, that should say who of them may be transgression.)
Even a blind person at the time of blindness, a dull or even a wise person—if there is a transgression by any of them, it should be stated through circumvention. (13-108-4)
प्रत्यक्षं भिन्नहृदया भेदयेयुः कृतं नराः। श्रियाभितप्ताः कौन्तेय भेदकामास्तथारयः ॥१३-१०८-५॥
pratyakṣaṃ bhinnahṛdayā bhedayeyuḥ kṛtaṃ narāḥ। śriyābhitaptāḥ kaunteya bhedakāmās tathārayāḥ॥13-108-5॥
[प्रत्यक्षम् (pratyakṣam) - directly; before the eyes; भिन्नहृदया (bhinna-hṛdayāḥ) - with divided minds; having split hearts; भेदयेयुः (bhedayeyuḥ) - would cause division; would divide; कृतम् (kṛtam) - deed; act; नराः (narāḥ) - men; people; श्रिया (śriyā) - by wealth; by prosperity; अभितप्ताः (abhitaptāḥ) - distressed; burned; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; भेदकामाः (bheda-kāmāḥ) - those desiring division; seeking to cause dissension; तथा (tathā) - thus; in that way; अरयः (arayāḥ) - enemies; adversaries;]
(Directly, men with divided minds would divide the deed, O son of Kunti; distressed by wealth, enemies desiring division also thus.)
Men with divided hearts, O son of Kunti, would openly cause division in actions; enemies distressed by wealth, desiring dissension, also act so. (13-108-5)
ज्येष्ठः कुलं वर्धयति विनाशयति वा पुनः। हन्ति सर्वमपि ज्येष्ठः कुलं यत्रावजायते ॥१३-१०८-६॥
jyeṣṭhaḥ kulaṃ vardhayati vināśayati vā punaḥ। hanti sarvam api jyeṣṭhaḥ kulaṃ yatrāvajāyate ॥13-108-6॥
[ज्येष्ठः (jyeṣṭhaḥ) - the eldest; (he); कुलं (kulaṃ) - family; वर्धयति (vardhayati) - causes to prosper; increases; विनाशयति (vināśayati) - destroys; वा (vā) - or; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; alternatively; हन्ति (hanti) - kills; destroys; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; अपि (api) - even; also; ज्येष्ठः (jyeṣṭhaḥ) - the eldest; (he); कुलं (kulaṃ) - family; यत्र (yatra) - where; अवजायते (avajāyate) - is born; comes into being;]
(The eldest causes the family to prosper or destroys (it) again. Destroys all even the eldest (he), the family where is born.)
The eldest son either causes the family to prosper or destroys it; in fact, if such an eldest is born, he may even destroy the entire family. (13-108-6)
अथ यो विनिकुर्वीत ज्येष्ठो भ्राता यवीयसः। अज्येष्ठः स्यादभागश्च नियम्यो राजभिश्च सः ॥१३-१०८-७॥
atha yo vinikurvīta jyeṣṭho bhrātā yavīyasaḥ। ajyeṣṭhaḥ syādabhāgaś ca niyamyō rājabhiś ca saḥ॥13-108-7॥
[अथ (atha) - now; then; यः (yaḥ) - who; which; विनिकुर्वीत (vinikurvīta) - should deprive; should take away; ज्येष्ठः (jyeṣṭhaḥ) - elder; eldest; भ्राता (bhrātā) - brother; यवीयसः (yavīyasaḥ) - of the younger; of the younger brother; अज्येष्ठः (ajyeṣṭhaḥ) - not-eldest; not the eldest; स्यात् (syāt) - should be; may be; अभागः (abhāgaḥ) - without share; shareless; च (ca) - and; नियम्यः (niyamyaḥ) - to be restrained; to be regulated; राजभिः (rājabhiḥ) - by kings; by rulers; च (ca) - and; सः (saḥ) - he;]
(Now, who should deprive the elder brother of the younger—he, not being the eldest, should be without a share and is to be restrained by kings.)
If an elder brother should deprive the younger (of his share), he, being not the eldest, should be made shareless and restrained by the kings. (13-108-7)
निकृती हि नरो लोकान्पापान्गच्छत्यसंशयम्। विदुलस्येव तत्पुष्पं मोघं जनयितुः स्मृतम् ॥१३-१०८-८॥
nikṛtī hi naro lokānpāpāngacchatyasaṁśayam। vidulasyeva tatpuṣpaṁ moghaṁ janayituḥ smṛtam ॥13-108-8॥
[निकृती (nikṛtī) - wickedness; हि (hi) - indeed; नरः (naraḥ) - a man; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; पापान् (pāpān) - evil; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes; असंशयम् (asaṁśayam) - without doubt; विदुलस्य (vidulasya) - of the vidula tree; इव (iva) - like; तत् (tat) - that; पुष्पम् (puṣpam) - flower; मोघम् (mogham) - vain; जनयितुः (janayituḥ) - of the producer; स्मृतम् (smṛtam) - is considered;]
(Wickedness indeed a man goes to evil worlds without doubt. Of the vidula tree like that flower vain of the producer is considered.)
Indeed, by wickedness, a man certainly goes to evil worlds without doubt. Just like the flower of the vidula tree is considered vain for the one who produced it. (13-108-8)
सर्वानर्थः कुले यत्र जायते पापपूरुषः। अकीर्तिं जनयत्येव कीर्तिमन्तर्दधाति च ॥१३-१०८-९॥
sarvānarthaḥ kule yatra jāyate pāpapūruṣaḥ। akīrtiṃ janayatyeva kīrtim antardadhāti ca ॥13-108-9॥
[सर्वानर्थः (sarvānarthaḥ) - all misfortunes; कुले (kule) - in the family; यत्र (yatra) - where; जायते (jāyate) - is born; पापपूरुषः (pāpapūruṣaḥ) - sinful man; अकीर्तिं (akīrtiṃ) - disrepute; जनयति (janayati) - produces; एव (eva) - indeed; कीर्तिम् (kīrtim) - fame; अन्तर्दधाति (antardadhāti) - destroys; च (ca) - and;]
(All misfortunes in the family where the sinful man is born; disrepute he indeed produces and fame he destroys also.)
Where a sinful man is born in a family, all misfortunes follow; he causes disgrace, and indeed destroys any fame. (13-108-9)
सर्वे चापि विकर्मस्था भागं नार्हन्ति सोदराः। नाप्रदाय कनिष्ठेभ्यो ज्येष्ठः कुर्वीत यौतकम् ॥१३-१०८-१०॥
sarve cāpi vikarmasthā bhāgaṃ nārhanti sodarāḥ. nāpradāya kaniṣṭhebhyo jyeṣṭhaḥ kurvīta yautakam ॥13-108-10॥
[सर्वे (sarve) - all; everyone; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; विकर्मस्था (vikarmasthāḥ) - engaged in improper deeds; भागं (bhāgam) - a share; न (na) - not; अर्हन्ति (arhanti) - deserve; are worthy of; सोदराḥ (sodarāḥ) - brothers; (having the same womb); न (na) - not; अप्रदाय (aprādāya) - without giving; कनिष्ठेभ्यः (kaniṣṭhebhyaḥ) - to the younger (brothers); ज्येष्ठः (jyeṣṭhaḥ) - the elder (brother); कुर्वीत (kurvīta) - should do; may perform; यौतकम् (yautakam) - marriage ceremony;]
(All and also those engaged in wrongful actions, a share do not deserve, brothers. Not having given to the younger brothers, the elder should perform the marriage ceremony.)
All brothers who are engaged in wrongful actions do not deserve a share. The elder should not perform the marriage ceremony without having given their shares to the younger brothers. (13-108-10)
अनुजं हि पितुर्दायो जङ्घाश्रमफलोऽध्वगः। स्वयमीहितलब्धं तु नाकामो दातुमर्हति ॥१३-१०८-११॥
anujaṃ hi pitur dāyo jaṅghāśramaphalo'dhvagaḥ। svayam īhitalabdhaṃ tu nākāmo dātum arhati॥13-108-11॥
[अनुजं (anujam) - younger brother; हि (hi) - indeed; पितुः (pituḥ) - of the father; दायः (dāyaḥ) - inheritance; जङ्घाश्रमफलः (jaṅghāśramaphalaḥ) - fruit of foot-based exertion; अध्वगः (adhvagaḥ) - traveler; स्वयम् (svayam) - oneself; ईहितलब्धं (īhitalabdhaṃ) - obtained by one's own effort; तु (tu) - but; न (na) - not; अकामः (akāmaḥ) - unwilling; दातुम् (dātum) - to give; अर्हति (arhati) - deserves;]
(Indeed, the inheritance of the father is for the younger brother, the fruit of exertion by traveling is for the traveler; but what is obtained by one's own effort, an unwilling person does not deserve to give.)
Indeed, a younger brother rightfully inherits the father's estate; the fruit of travel comes to the one who journeys; but what a person has obtained by his own effort, he does not have to give if he is unwilling. (13-108-11)
भ्रातॄणामविभक्तानामुत्थानमपि चेत्सह। न पुत्रभागं विषमं पिता दद्यात्कथञ्चन ॥१३-१०८-१२॥
bhrātṝṇām avibhaktānām utthānam api cet saha। na putra-bhāgaṃ viṣamaṃ pitā dadyāt kathaṃcana॥13-108-12॥
[भ्रातॄणाम् (bhrātṝṇām) - of brothers; अविभक्तानाम् (avibhaktānām) - undivided; उत्थानम् (utthānam) - acquisition; अपि (api) - even; चेत् (cet) - if; सह (saha) - together; न (na) - not; पुत्रभागम् (putra-bhāgam) - son's share; विषमम् (viṣamam) - unequal; पिता (pitā) - father; दद्यात् (dadyāt) - should give; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way;]
(If even the acquisition of undivided brothers is together, the father should not give unequal son's share in any way.)
If the property acquired by undivided brothers is joint, the father should by no means give an unequal share to the sons. (13-108-12)
न ज्येष्ठानवमन्येत दुष्कृतः सुकृतोऽपि वा। यदि स्त्री यद्यवरजः श्रेयः पश्येत्तथाचरेत् ॥ धर्मं हि श्रेय इत्याहुरिति धर्मविदो विदुः ॥१३-१०८-१३॥
na jyeṣṭhānavamanyeta duṣkṛtaḥ sukṛto'pi vā। yadi strī yadyavarajaḥ śreyaḥ paśyettathācareta ॥ dharmaṃ hi śreya ityāhuriti dharmavido viduḥ ॥13-108-13॥
[न (na) - not; ज्येष्ठान् (jyeṣṭhān) - the elders; अवमन्येत (avamanyeta) - one should disregard; दुष्कृतः (duṣkṛtaḥ) - wicked person; सुकृतः (sukṛtaḥ) - virtuous person; अपि (api) - even; वा (vā) - or; यदि (yadi) - if; स्त्री (strī) - a woman; यद्यु (yady) - if; अवरजः (avarajaḥ) - a younger (person); श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - what is good; पश्येत् (paśyet) - should see; तथा (tathā) - so; आचरेत् (ācaret) - should act; धर्मम् (dharmaṃ) - righteousness; हि (hi) - indeed; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - the good (highest); इति (iti) - thus; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they say; इति (iti) - thus; धर्मविदः (dharmavidaḥ) - knowledgable in dharma; विदुः (viduḥ) - they know;]
(Not the elders one should disregard, wicked person or virtuous person even or; if woman if younger (person), what is good should see, so should act; righteousness indeed the good (highest) thus they say, thus knowledgable in dharma know.)
One should not disregard elders, whether one is wicked or even virtuous; even if a woman or a younger person perceives what is good, one should act accordingly; for they say righteousness is the highest good, thus knowers of dharma know. (13-108-13)
दशाचार्यानुपाध्याय उपाध्यायान्पिता दश। दश चैव पितॄन्माता सर्वां वा पृथिवीमपि ॥१३-१०८-१४॥
daśācāryānupādhyāya upādhyāyānpitā daśa। daśa caiva pitṝn mātā sarvāṃ vā pṛthivīm api ॥13-108-14॥
[दश (daśa) - ten; आचार्यान् (ācāryān) - teachers (ācāryas; accusative plural); उपाध्याय (upādhyāyaḥ) - a sub-teacher (subject); उपाध्यायान् (upādhyāyān) - sub-teachers (accusative plural); पिता (pitā) - father; दश (daśa) - ten; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; पितॄन् (pitṝn) - fathers (accusative plural ancestors); माता (mātā) - mother; सर्वां (sarvām) - entire; वा (vā) - or; पृथिवीम् (pṛthivīm) - earth (accusative singular); अपि (api) - even;]
(Ten teachers, a sub-teacher is equal to; to sub-teachers, the father is ten; ten fathers, indeed, the mother; the entire earth or even.)
A sub-teacher is equal to ten teachers. The father is equal to ten sub-teachers. The mother is equal to ten fathers or even the whole earth. (13-108-14)
गौरवेणाभिभवति नास्ति मातृसमो गुरुः। माता गरीयसी यच्च तेनैतां मन्यते जनः ॥१३-१०८-१५॥
gauraveṇābhibhavati nāsti mātṛsamo guruḥ। mātā garīyasī yac ca tenaitāṃ manyate janaḥ॥13-108-15॥
[गौरवेण (gauraveṇa) - by respect; अभिभवति (abhibhavati) - overcomes; नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; मातृसमः (mātṛ-samaḥ) - equal to mother; गुरुः (guruḥ) - teacher; माता (mātā) - mother; गरीयसी (garīyasī) - greater; यत् (yat) - because; च (ca) - and; तेन (tena) - for that reason; एताम् (etām) - her (the mother); मन्यते (manyate) - considers; जनः (janaḥ) - people;]
(By respect overcomes, there is not a teacher equal to the mother. Mother is greater, and because of that, people consider her (so).)
There is no teacher equal to the mother because she surpasses all in respect. Therefore, people consider the mother greater. (13-108-15)
ज्येष्ठो भ्राता पितृसमो मृते पितरि भारत। स ह्येषां वृत्तिदाता स्यात्स चैतान्परिपालयेत् ॥१३-१०८-१६॥
jyeṣṭho bhrātā pitṛsamo mṛte pitari bhārata। sa hyeṣāṃ vṛttidātā syātsa caitān paripālayet॥13-108-16॥
[ज्येष्ठः (jyeṣṭhaḥ) - eldest; भ्राता (bhrātā) - brother; पितृसमः (pitṛ-samaḥ) - equal to father; मृते (mṛte) - (when he is) dead; पितरि (pitari) - father; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; सः (saḥ) - he; हि (hi) - indeed; एषाम् (eṣām) - of these; वृत्तिदाता (vṛtti-dātā) - giver of livelihood; स्यात् (syāt) - should be; सः (saḥ) - he; च (ca) - and; एतान् (etān) - these; परिपालयेत् (paripālayet) - should protect;]
(The eldest brother, equal to the father when the father is dead, O Bhārata—he indeed should be the giver of livelihood for these, he and should protect these.)
O Bhārata, when the father is dead, the eldest brother should be regarded as equal to the father; he should support and protect his brothers. (13-108-16)
कनिष्ठास्तं नमस्येरन्सर्वे छन्दानुवर्तिनः। तमेव चोपजीवेरन्यथैव पितरं तथा ॥१३-१०८-१७॥
kaniṣṭhās taṃ namasyeran sarve chandānuvartinaḥ। tam eva copajīveran yathā eva pitaraṃ tathā॥13-108-17॥
[कनिष्ठाः (kaniṣṭhāḥ) - the younger ones; तम् (tam) - him; नमस्येरन् (namasyeran) - should bow; सर्वे (sarve) - all; छन्दानुवर्तिनः (chandānuvartinaḥ) - those who follow (the will of elders); तम् (tam) - him; एव (eva) - alone; च (ca) - and; उपजीवेरन् (upajīveran) - should subsist (upon); यथा (yathā) - just as; एव (eva) - indeed; पितरम् (pitaram) - the father; तथा (tathā) - likewise;]
(The younger ones him should bow, all those who follow the will of elders; him alone and should subsist upon, just as indeed the father likewise.)
All the younger ones, all who follow the will of elders, should bow to him; and they should subsist upon him alone, just as they do with the father. (13-108-17)
शरीरमेतौ सृजतः पिता माता च भारत। आचार्यशास्ता या जातिः सा सत्या साजरामरा ॥१३-१०८-१८॥
śarīrametau sṛjataḥ pitā mātā ca bhārata। ācāryaśāstā yā jātiḥ sā satyā sājarāmarā ॥13-108-18॥
[शरीरम् (śarīram) - body; एतौ (etau) - these two; सृजतः (sṛjataḥ) - create; पिता (pitā) - father; माता (mātā) - mother; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; आचार्य-शास्ता (ācārya-śāstā) - teacher-instructor; या (yā) - who; जातिः (jātiḥ) - birth; सा (sā) - she (that); सत्या (satyā) - true; सा (sā) - she (that); अजरामरा (ajarāmarā) - undecaying and undying;]
(The body, these two create: father and mother, and O Bhārata, the birth which the teacher-instructor gives, that is true, that is undecaying and undying.)
O Bhārata, the father and mother create the body, but the birth given by the teacher-instructor is the true one; that birth is undecaying and immortal. (13-108-18)
ज्येष्ठा मातृसमा चापि भगिनी भरतर्षभ। भ्रातुर्भार्या च तद्वत्स्याद्यस्या बाल्ये स्तनं पिबेत् ॥१३-१०८-१९॥
jyeṣṭhā mātṛsamā cāpi bhaginī bharatarṣabha। bhrāturbhāryā ca tadvatsyādyasyā bālye stanaṃ pibet ॥13-108-19॥
[ज्येष्ठा (jyeṣṭhā) - elder (sister); मातृसमा (mātṛsamā) - like a mother; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; भगिनी (bhaginī) - sister; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas; भ्रातुः (bhrātuḥ) - of the brother; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; च (ca) - and; तद्वत् (tadvat) - similarly; स्यात् (syāt) - should be regarded; यस्या (yasyā) - whose; बाल्ये (bālye) - in childhood; स्तनं (stanaṃ) - breast; पिबेत् (pibet) - drinks;]
