सर्वेषामेव वर्णानां म्लेच्छानां च पितामह। उपवासे मतिरियं कारणं च न विद्महे ॥१३-१०९-१॥
sarveṣāmeva varṇānāṃ mlecchānāṃ ca pitāmaha। upavāse matiriyaṃ kāraṇaṃ ca na vidmahe॥13-109-1॥
[सर्वेषाम् एव (sarveṣām eva) - of all indeed; वर्णानाम् (varṇānām) - of castes; म्लेच्छानाम् च (mlecchānām ca) - and of foreigners (non-Vedic people); पितामह (pitāmaha) - O grandfather; उपवासे (upavāse) - in fasting; मतिः (matiḥ) - intention; इयम् (iyam) - this; कारणम् च (kāraṇam ca) - and reason; न विद्महे (na vidmahe) - not we know;]
(Of all indeed of the castes and of foreigners, O grandfather, in fasting, this is the intention and the reason also not we know.)
O grandfather, among all the castes and foreigners, we do not know what this intention and the reason for fasting are. (13-109-1)
ब्रह्मक्षत्रेण नियमाश्चर्तव्या इति नः श्रुतम्। उपवासे कथं तेषां कृत्यमस्ति पितामह ॥१३-१०९-२॥
brahmakṣatreṇa niyamāś cartavyā iti naḥ śrutam। upavāse kathaṁ teṣāṁ krityam asti pitāmaha ॥13-109-2॥
[ब्रह्मक्षत्रेण (brahmakṣatreṇa) - by Brāhmaṇa and Kṣatriya; by the class of Brāhmaṇas and Kṣatriyas; नियमाः (niyamāḥ) - observances; disciplines; च (ca) - and; कर्तव्या (cartavyā) - to be performed; ought to be done; इति (iti) - thus; so; नः (naḥ) - to us; by us; श्रुतम् (śrutam) - heard; has been heard; उपवासे (upavāse) - in the fast; during fasting; कथम् (kathaṁ) - how; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; their; कृत्यम् (krityam) - to be done; duty; अस्ति (asti) - is; पितामह (pitāmaha) - O grandsire; O grandfather;]
(By Brāhmaṇa and Kṣatriya, observances are to be performed—thus to us has been heard. In fasting, how their duty is, O grandsire (13-109-2))
We have heard that observances are to be performed by Brāhmaṇas and Kṣatriyas. O grandsire, what duty do they have during fasting? (13-109-2)
नियमं चोपवासानां सर्वेषां ब्रूहि पार्थिव। अवाप्नोति गतिं कां च उपवासपरायणः ॥१३-१०९-३॥
niyamaṁ copavāsānāṁ sarveṣāṁ brūhi pārthiva। avāpnoti gatiṁ kāṁ ca upavāsaparāyaṇaḥ ॥13-109-3॥

(The rule and of fasts of all tell O king. Obtains state which and one devoted to fasting.)
O king, tell (me) the rule of all fasts, and what state is obtained by one devoted to fasting. (13-109-3)
उपवासः परं पुण्यमुपवासः परायणम्। उपोष्येह नरश्रेष्ठ किं फलं प्रतिपद्यते ॥१३-१०९-४॥
upavāsaḥ paraṃ puṇyam upavāsaḥ parāyaṇam। upoṣyeha naraśreṣṭha kiṃ phalaṃ pratipadyate ॥13-109-4॥

Fasting is the highest virtue; fasting is the supreme refuge. O best of men, what fruit does one attain here by fasting? (13-109-4)
अधर्मान्मुच्यते केन धर्ममाप्नोति वै कथम्। स्वर्गं पुण्यं च लभते कथं भरतसत्तम ॥१३-१०९-५॥
adharmān mucyate kena dharmam āpnoti vai katham। svargaṃ puṇyaṃ ca labhate katham bharatasattama ॥13-109-5॥
[अधर्मात् (adharmāt) - from adharma; मुच्यते (mucyate) - is freed; केन (kena) - by what; धर्मम् (dharmam) - dharma; आप्नोति (āpnoti) - attains; वै (vai) - indeed; कथम् (katham) - how; स्वर्गम् (svargam) - heaven; पुण्यम् (puṇyam) - merit; च (ca) - and; लभते (labhate) - obtains; कथम् (katham) - how; भरतसत्तम (bharatasattama) - O best of Bharatas;]
(From adharma is freed by what? Dharma attains indeed how? Heaven, merit and obtains how, O best of Bharatas? (13-109-5))
By what means is one freed from adharma? How does one truly attain dharma? How does one obtain heaven and merit, O best of the Bharatas? (13-109-5)
उपोष्य चापि किं तेन प्रदेयं स्यान्नराधिप। धर्मेण च सुखानर्थाँल्लभेद्येन ब्रवीहि तम् ॥१३-१०९-६॥
upoṣya cāpi kiṁ tena pradeyaṁ syān narādhipa। dharmeṇa ca sukhān arthān labhet yena bravīhi tam ॥13-109-6॥
[उपोष्य (upoṣya) - having fasted; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; किं (kiṁ) - what; तेन (tena) - by that; प्रदेयम् (pradeyam) - to be given; स्यान् (syān) - should be; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king; धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - by righteousness; च (ca) - and; सुखानर्थान् (sukhān arthān) - pleasurable objects; लभेत (labheta) - one might obtain; येन (yena) - by which; ब्रवीहि (bravīhi) - tell; तम् (tam) - that;]
(Having fasted and also what by that should be given, O king; by righteousness and pleasurable objects one might obtain by which, tell that.)
O king, after fasting, what should be given by that (person)? By what means may one righteously attain pleasurable things? Tell that. (13-109-6)

एवं ब्रुवाणं कौन्तेयं धर्मज्ञं धर्मतत्त्ववित्। धर्मपुत्रमिदं वाक्यं भीष्मः शान्तनवोऽब्रवीत् ॥१३-१०९-७॥
evaṃ bruvāṇaṃ kaunteyaṃ dharmajñaṃ dharmatattvavit। dharmaputram idaṃ vākyaṃ bhīṣmaḥ śāntanavo 'bravīt ॥13-109-7॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; ब्रुवाणं (bruvāṇam) - speaking; कौन्तेयं (kaunteyam) - son of Kunti; धर्मज्ञं (dharmajñam) - knower of dharma; धर्मतत्त्ववित् (dharmatattvavit) - knower of the essence of dharma; धर्मपुत्रम् (dharmaputram) - son of Dharma; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वाक्यं (vākyaṃ) - word; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; शान्तनवः (śāntanavaḥ) - son of Shantanu; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(Thus, to the son of Kunti, the knower of dharma, the knower of the essence of dharma, to the son of Dharma, this word Bhishma, son of Shantanu, spoke.)
Thus, Bhishma, the son of Shantanu, spoke these words to Yudhishthira, the son of Kunti, who knows dharma and its true essence. (13-109-7)
इदं खलु महाराज श्रुतमासीत्पुरातनम्। उपवासविधौ श्रेष्ठा ये गुणा भरतर्षभ ॥१३-१०९-८॥
idaṃ khalu mahārāja śrutam āsīt purātanam। upavāsa-vidhau śreṣṭhā ye guṇā bharatarṣabha ॥13-109-8॥
[इदं (idaṃ) - this; खलु (khalu) - indeed; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; श्रुतम् (śrutam) - heard; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; पुरातनम् (purātanam) - ancient; उपवासविधौ (upavāsa-vidhau) - in the practice of fasting; श्रेष्ठाः (śreṣṭhāḥ) - most excellent; ये (ye) - which; गुणाः (guṇāḥ) - qualities; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas;]
(This indeed, O great king, was heard, ancient: in the practice of fasting, the most excellent which qualities, O bull among the Bharatas.)

प्राजापत्यं ह्यङ्गिरसं पृष्टवानस्मि भारत। यथा मां त्वं तथैवाहं पृष्टवांस्तं तपोधनम् ॥१३-१०९-९॥
prājāpatyaṃ hyaṅgirasaṃ pṛṣṭavānasmi bhārata। yathā māṃ tvaṃ tathaivāhaṃ pṛṣṭavāṃstaṃ tapodhanam ॥13-109-9॥
[प्राजापत्यं (prājāpatyam) - related to Prajāpati; हि (hi) - indeed; अङ्गिरसं (aṅgirasaṃ) - [the sage] Aṅgiras; पृष्टवान् (pṛṣṭavān) - I asked; अस्मि (asmi) - am; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; यथा (yathā) - just as; माम् (mām) - me; त्वम् (tvam) - you; तथा (tathā) - so; एव (eva) - indeed; अहम् (aham) - I; पृष्टवान् (pṛṣṭavān) - asked; तम् (tam) - him; तपोधनम् (tapodhanam) - the one rich in austerity;]
(Related to Prajāpati indeed Aṅgiras I have asked, O Bhārata. Just as me you, so indeed I asked him, the one rich in austerity.)
O Bhārata, I have indeed asked Aṅgiras about matters relating to Prajāpati. Just as you asked me, so I asked that ascetic (rich in austerity). (13-109-9)
प्रश्नमेतं मया पृष्टो भगवानग्निसम्भवः। उपवासविधिं पुण्यमाचष्ट भरतर्षभ ॥१३-१०९-१०॥
praśnam etaṃ mayā pṛṣṭo bhagavān agni-sambhavaḥ। upavāsa-vidhiṃ puṇyam ācaṣṭa bharata-ṛṣabha ॥13-109-10॥
[प्रश्नम् (praśnam) - question; एतं (etaṃ) - this; मया (mayā) - by me; पृष्टः (pṛṣṭaḥ) - asked; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the revered one; अग्निसम्भवः (agni-sambhavaḥ) - born from Agni; उपवासविधिं (upavāsa-vidhim) - the procedure of fasting; पुण्यम् (puṇyam) - holy; आचष्ट (ācaṣṭa) - explained; भरतर्षभ (bharata-ṛṣabha) - bull among the Bharatas;]

ब्रह्मक्षत्रे त्रिरात्रं तु विहितं कुरुनन्दन। द्विस्त्रिरात्रमथैवात्र निर्दिष्टं पुरुषर्षभ ॥१३-१०९-११॥
brahmakṣatre trirātraṃ tu vihitaṃ kurunandana। dvistrirātramathaivātra nirdiṣṭaṃ puruṣarṣabha ॥13-109-11॥
[ब्रह्मक्षत्रे (brahmakṣatre) - in Brāhmaṇas and Kṣatriyas; त्रिरात्रम् (trirātram) - three nights; तु (tu) - but; विहितम् (vihitam) - prescribed; कुरुनन्दन (kurunandana) - O joy of the Kurus; द्विस्त्रिरात्रम् (dvistrirātram) - two or three nights; अथ (atha) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; अत्र (atra) - here; निर्दिष्टम् (nirdiṣṭam) - is specified; पुरुषर्षभ (puruṣarṣabha) - O best of men;]

वैश्यशूद्रौ तु यौ मोहादुपवासं प्रकुर्वते। त्रिरात्रं द्विस्त्रिरात्रं वा तयोः पुष्टिर्न विद्यते ॥१३-१०९-१२॥
vaiśyaśūḍrau tu yau mohādupavāsaṃ prakurvate। trirātraṃ dvistrirātraṃ vā tayoḥ puṣṭir na vidyate॥13-109-12॥
[वैश्यशूद्रौ (vaiśyaśūḍrau) - the Vaiśya and Śūdra; तु (tu) - but; यौ (yau) - who (dual); मोहात् (mohāt) - from delusion; उपवासं (upavāsaṃ) - fasting; प्रकुर्वते (prakurvate) - they perform; त्रिरात्रं (trirātraṃ) - three nights; द्विस्त्रिरात्रं (dvistrirātraṃ) - two or three nights; वा (vā) - or; तयोः (tayoḥ) - of those two; पुष्टिः (puṣṭiḥ) - benefit; न (na) - not; विविधते (vidyate) - is found;]
(Vaiśya and Śūdra, but, who from delusion fasting perform, three nights, two or three nights or, of those two benefit not is found.)
If a Vaiśya or Śūdra, through delusion, undertakes fasting for two or three nights, or even for three nights, then no benefit is found for either of them from such fasting. (13-109-12)
चतुर्थभक्तक्षपणं वैश्यशूद्रे विधीयते। त्रिरात्रं न तु धर्मज्ञैर्विहितं ब्रह्मवादिभिः ॥१३-१०९-१३॥
caturthabhaktakṣapaṇaṃ vaiśyaśūdre vidhīyate। trirātraṃ na tu dharmajñairvihitaṃ brahmavādibhiḥ ॥13-109-13॥
[चतुर्थभक्तक्षपणं (caturthabhaktakṣapaṇam) - fasting by abstaining from the fourth meal; वैश्यशूद्रे (vaiśyaśūdre) - for Vaiśya and Śūdra; विधीयते (vidhīyate) - is prescribed; त्रिरात्रं (trirātram) - (for) three nights; न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; धर्मज्ञैः (dharmajñaiḥ) - by those knowledgeable in dharma; विहितं (vihitam) - enjoined; ब्रह्मवादिभिः (brahmavādibhiḥ) - by those speaking of Brahman;]
(Fasting by abstaining from the fourth meal is prescribed for Vaiśya and Śūdra; three nights are not enjoined by those knowledgeable in dharma, by those speaking of Brahman.)
Abstaining from the fourth meal is prescribed as a fast for Vaiśyas and Śūdras; a three-night fast is not enjoined by those versed in dharma and those conversant with Brahman. (13-109-13)
पञ्चम्यां चैव षष्ठ्यां च पौर्णमास्यां च भारत। क्षमावान्रूपसम्पन्नः श्रुतवांश्चैव जायते ॥१३-१०९-१४॥
pañcamyāṃ caiva ṣaṣṭhyāṃ ca paurṇamāsyāṃ ca bhārata। kṣamāvān rūpasampannaḥ śrutavāṃś caiva jāyate ॥13-109-14॥
[पञ्चम्यां (pañcamyām) - on the fifth (lunar day); च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; षष्ठ्यां (ṣaṣṭhyām) - on the sixth (lunar day); च (ca) - and; पौर्णमास्यां (paurṇamāsyām) - on the full moon day; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; क्षमावान् (kṣamāvān) - endowed with forbearance; रूपसम्पन्नः (rūpasampannaḥ) - possessed of beauty; श्रुतवान् (śrutavān) - endowed with learning; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; जायते (jāyate) - is born;]
(On the fifth and indeed on the sixth and on the full moon day and, O Bhārata, one endowed with forbearance, possessed of beauty, endowed with learning and indeed is born.)
O Bhārata, one who is endowed with forbearance, beauty, and learning is born on the fifth, sixth, and full moon days. (13-109-14)
नानपत्यो भवेत्प्राज्ञो दरिद्रो वा कदाचन। यजिष्णुः पञ्चमीं षष्ठीं क्षपेद्यो भोजयेद्द्विजान् ॥१३-१०९-१५॥
nānapatyo bhavet prājño daridro vā kadācana। yajiṣṇuḥ pañcamīṃ ṣaṣṭhīṃ kṣaped yo bhojayet dvijān ॥13-109-15॥
[नानपत्यः (nānapatyaḥ) - one without offspring; भवेत् (bhavet) - may become; प्राज्ञः (prājñaḥ) - wise person; दरिद्रः (daridraḥ) - poor; वा (vā) - or; कदाचन (kadācana) - at any time; यजिष्णुः (yajiṣṇuḥ) - one devoted to sacrifice; पञ्चमीम् (pañcamīm) - the fifth day; षष्ठीम् (ṣaṣṭhīm) - the sixth day; क्षपेत् (kṣapet) - should omit; यः (yaḥ) - who; भोजयेत् (bhojayet) - should feed; द्विजान् (dvijān) - twice-born (Brahmins);]
(One without offspring may become, the wise or the poor at any time. The sacrificer should omit the fifth and sixth day, who should feed the twice-born.)
A person without offspring may become so, whether learned or poor, at any time—if, being devoted to sacrifice, he feeds Brahmins on the fifth or sixth day. (13-109-15)
अष्टमीमथ कौन्तेय शुक्लपक्षे चतुर्दशीम्। उपोष्य व्याधिरहितो वीर्यवानभिजायते ॥१३-१०९-१६॥
aṣṭamīm atha kaunteya śuklapakṣe caturdaśīm। upoṣya vyādhirahito vīryavān abhijāyate ॥13-109-16॥
[अष्टमीम् (aṣṭamīm) - eighth (tithi); अथ (atha) - then; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; शुक्लपक्षे (śuklapakṣe) - in the waxing fortnight; चतुर्दशीम् (caturdaśīm) - fourteenth (tithi); उपोष्य (upoṣya) - having fasted; व्याधिरहितः (vyādhirahitaḥ) - free from disease; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - powerful; अभिजायते (abhijāyate) - is born;]
(Eighth then O son of Kunti, in the waxing fortnight, fourteenth (tithi), having fasted, free from disease, powerful, is born.)
O son of Kunti, one who fasts on the eighth and fourteenth days in the waxing fortnight becomes free from disease and is born strong and vigorous. (13-109-16)
मार्गशीर्षं तु यो मासमेकभक्तेन सङ्क्षिपेत्। भोजयेच्च द्विजान्भक्त्या स मुच्येद्व्याधिकिल्बिषैः ॥१३-१०९-१७॥
mārgaśīrṣaṃ tu yo māsamekabhaktena saṅkṣipet। bhojayec ca dvijān bhaktyā sa mucyed vyādhi-kilbiṣaiḥ॥13-109-17॥
[मार्गशीर्षं (mārgaśīrṣaṃ) - the month Mārgaśīrṣa; तु (tu) - but; यो (yo) - who; मासम् (māsam) - the month; एकभक्तेन (ekabhaktena) - with one meal a day; सङ्क्षिपेत् (saṅkṣipet) - should restrict (his diet); भोजयेच्च (bhojayec ca) - and should feed; द्विजान् (dvijān) - Brahmins; भक्त्या (bhaktyā) - with devotion; सः (saḥ) - he; मुच्येत् (mucyet) - shall be freed; व्याधि (vyādhi) - from disease; किल्बिषैः (kilbiṣaiḥ) - from sins;]
(Mārgaśīrṣa but who month with one meal a day should restrict and should feed Brahmins with devotion he shall be freed from disease, from sins.)
But whoever, during the month of Mārgaśīrṣa, restricts himself to one meal a day and devoutly feeds Brahmins, he shall be freed from diseases and sins. (13-109-17)
सर्वकल्याणसम्पूर्णः सर्वौषधिसमन्वितः। कृषिभागी बहुधनो बहुपुत्रश्च जायते ॥१३-१०९-१८॥
sarvakalyāṇasampūrṇaḥ sarvauṣadhisamanvitaḥ। kṛṣibhāgī bahudhanaḥ bahuputraś ca jāyate ॥13-109-18॥
[सर्वकल्याणसम्पूर्णः (sarva-kalyāṇa-sampūrṇaḥ) - completely filled with all auspiciousness; सर्वौषधिसमन्वितः (sarva-auṣadhi-samanvitaḥ) - endowed with all medicinal plants; कृषिभागी (kṛṣi-bhāgī) - partaking in agriculture; बहुधनः (bahu-dhanaḥ) - having much wealth; बहुपुत्रः (bahu-putraḥ) - having many sons; च (ca) - and; जायते (jāyate) - is born;]
(Completely filled with all auspiciousness, endowed with all medicinal plants, partaking in agriculture, having much wealth, and having many sons is born.)
One is born completely filled with all auspiciousness, endowed with all medicinal plants, partaking in agriculture, possessing great wealth, and having many sons. (13-109-18)
पौषमासं तु कौन्तेय भक्तेनैकेन यः क्षपेत्। सुभगो दर्शनीयश्च यशोभागी च जायते ॥१३-१०९-१९॥
pauṣamāsaṃ tu kaunteya bhaktenaikena yaḥ kṣapet। subhago darśanīyaś ca yaśobhāgī ca jāyate ॥13-109-19॥
[पौषमासं (pauṣamāsaṃ) - the month of Pauṣa; तु (tu) - but; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kuntī; भक्तेन (bhaktena) - by a devotee; एकेन (ekena) - single; यः (yaḥ) - who; क्षपेत् (kṣapet) - spends (endures); सुभगः (subhagaḥ) - fortunate; दर्शनीयः (darśanīyaḥ) - handsome (attractive to be seen); च (ca) - and; यशोभागी (yaśobhāgī) - possessor of fame; च (ca) - and; जायते (jāyate) - is born (becomes);]
(But the Pauṣa month, O Kaunteya, by a single devotee who spends, fortunate, handsome and possessor of fame also becomes.)
But, O son of Kunti, whoever as a single devotee observes (endures) the month of Pauṣa becomes fortunate, attractive, and endowed with fame. (13-109-19)
पितृभक्तो माघमासमेकभक्तेन यः क्षपेत्। श्रीमत्कुले ज्ञातिमध्ये स महत्त्वं प्रपद्यते ॥१३-१०९-२०॥
pitṛbhakto māghamāsamekabhaktena yaḥ kṣapet। śrīmatkule jñātimadhye sa mahattvaṃ prapadyate ॥13-109-20॥
[पितृभक्तः (pitṛbhaktaḥ) - one devoted to ancestors; माघमासम् (māghamāsam) - the month of Māgha; एकभक्तेन (ekabhaktena) - with a single meal (per day); यः (yaḥ) - who; क्षपेत् (kṣapet) - passes (it), spends; श्रीमत्-कुले (śrīmat-kule) - in an illustrious family; ज्ञाति-मध्ये (jñāti-madhye) - among relatives; सः (saḥ) - he; महत्त्वम् (mahattvam) - greatness; प्रपद्यते (prapadyate) - attains.;]
(One devoted to ancestors, who passes the month of Māgha with a single meal, he attains greatness among relatives in an illustrious family.)
He who, being devoted to ancestors, spends the month of Māgha taking only one meal a day, attains greatness among his relatives in a distinguished lineage. (13-109-20)
भगदैवं तु यो मासमेकभक्तेन यः क्षपेत्। स्त्रीषु वल्लभतां याति वश्याश्चास्य भवन्ति ताः ॥१३-१०९-२१॥
bhagadaivaṃ tu yo māsamekabhaktena yaḥ kṣapet। strīṣu vallabhatāṃ yāti vaśyāś cāsya bhavanti tāḥ॥ 13-109-21॥
[भगदैवं (bhagadaivaṃ) - bhaga deity; तु (tu) - but; यः (yaḥ) - who; मासम् (māsam) - a month; एकभक्तेन (ekabhaktena) - with one meal; यः (yaḥ) - who; क्षपेत् (kṣapet) - should pass (should spend); स्त्रीषु (strīṣu) - among women; वल्लभताम् (vallabhatām) - belovedness; याति (yāti) - attains; वश्याः (vaśyāḥ) - obedient; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - to him; भवन्ति (bhavanti) - become; ताः (tāḥ) - they (those women);]
(But who (by) bhaga deity, the month, with one meal, who should spend, among women, belovedness attains, obedient and to him become, they.)
But whoever spends a month for the bhaga deity with one meal a day, attains belovedness among women, and those women become obedient to him. (13-109-21)
चैत्रं तु नियतो मासमेकभक्तेन यः क्षपेत्। सुवर्णमणिमुक्ताढ्ये कुले महति जायते ॥१३-१०९-२२॥
caitraṃ tu niyato māsamekabhaktena yaḥ kṣapet. suvarṇamaṇimuktāḍhye kule mahati jāyate ॥13-109-22॥
[चैत्रं (caitram) - the month of Caitra; तु (tu) - but; नियतः (niyataḥ) - disciplined (person); मासम् (māsam) - month; एकभक्तेन (ekabhaktena) - with one meal (per day); यः (yaḥ) - who; क्षपेत् (kṣapet) - should pass (spend); सुवर्णमणिमुक्ताढ्ये (suvarṇamaṇimuktāḍhye) - rich in gold, jewels, and pearls; कुले (kule) - in a family; महति (mahati) - great (noble); जायते (jāyate) - is born;]
(The month of Caitra, but a disciplined (person), the month with one meal (per day), who should pass, in a family rich in gold, jewels, and pearls, great, is born.)
But whoever spends the month of Caitra with discipline, taking only one meal each day, is born into a great family rich in gold, jewels, and pearls. (13-109-22)
निस्तरेदेकभक्तेन वैशाखं यो जितेन्द्रियः। नरो वा यदि वा नारी ज्ञातीनां श्रेष्ठतां व्रजेत् ॥१३-१०९-२३॥
nistared ekabhaktena vaiśākhaṁ yo jitendriyaḥ। naro vā yadi vā nārī jñātīnāṁ śreṣṭhatāṁ vrajet॥13-109-23॥
[निस्तरेत् (nistaret) - should cross over; succeed; एकभक्तेन (ekabhaktena) - with (taking) one meal a day; वैशाखं (vaiśākham) - (the month of) Vaiśākha; यः (yaḥ) - who; जितेन्द्रियः (jitendriyaḥ) - having conquered the senses; नरः (naraḥ) - man; वा (vā) - or; यदि (yadi) - if; वा (vā) - or; नारी (nārī) - woman; ज्ञातीनां (jñātīnām) - of relatives; श्रेष्ठताम् (śreṣṭhatām) - supremacy; high status; व्रजेत् (vrajet) - should attain;]
(Who, having conquered the senses, should pass the month of Vaiśākha with one meal a day, whether man or woman, should attain supremacy among relatives.)
Whoever, having mastered the senses, spends the month of Vaiśākha eating only one meal a day—whether a man or a woman—attains the highest status among their relatives. (13-109-23)
ज्येष्ठामूलं तु यो मासमेकभक्तेन सङ्क्षपेत्। ऐश्वर्यमतुलं श्रेष्ठं पुमान्स्त्री वाभिजायते ॥१३-१०९-२४॥
jyeṣṭhāmūlaṃ tu yo māsamekabhaktena saṅkṣapet। aiśvaryamatulaṃ śreṣṭhaṃ pumāṃstrī vābhijāyate॥13-109-24॥
[ज्येष्ठामूलं (jyeṣṭhāmūlaṃ) - root of Jyeṣṭhā plant; तु (tu) - but; यः (yaḥ) - who; मासम् (māsam) - for a month; एकभक्तेन (ekabhaktena) - with one meal a day; सङ्क्षपेत् (saṅkṣapet) - he consumes; ऐश्वर्यम् (aiśvaryam) - wealth; अतुलं (atulaṃ) - unequalled; श्रेष्ठं (śreṣṭham) - excellent; पुमान् (pumān) - man; स्त्री (strī) - woman; वा (vā) - or; अभिजायते (abhijāyate) - is born;]
(But who for a month with one meal a day consumes root of Jyeṣṭhā plant, wealth unequalled excellent man or woman is born.)
But whoever consumes the root of the Jyeṣṭhā plant for a month as a single daily meal will obtain unparalleled, excellent wealth, whether a man or a woman. (13-109-24)
आषाढमेकभक्तेन स्थित्वा मासमतन्द्रितः। बहुधान्यो बहुधनो बहुपुत्रश्च जायते ॥१३-१०९-२५॥
āṣāḍham-ekabhaktena sthitvā māsam-atandritaḥ। bahudhānyo bahudhhano bahuputraś-ca jāyate॥13-109-25॥
[आषाढम् (āṣāḍham) - during Āṣāḍha (month); एकभक्तेन (ekabhaktena) - with one (single) meal; स्थित्वा (sthitvā) - having observed (so); मासम् (māsam) - for a month; अतन्द्रितः (atandritaḥ) - without laziness; बहुधान्यः (bahudhānyaḥ) - possessing much grain; बहुधनः (bahudhano) - possessing much wealth; बहुपुत्रः (bahuputraḥ) - having many sons; च (ca) - and; जायते (jāyate) - is born, becomes;]
(During Āṣāḍha, with one meal, having observed for a month, without laziness, one of much grain, much wealth, and many sons is born.)
He who, in the month of Āṣāḍha, subsists on one meal for a month without negligence becomes rich in grain and wealth, and has many sons. (13-109-25)
श्रावणं नियतो मासमेकभक्तेन यः क्षपेत्। यत्र तत्राभिषेकेण युज्यते ज्ञातिवर्धनः ॥१३-१०९-२६॥
śrāvaṇaṃ niyato māsamekabhaktena yaḥ kṣapet। yatra tatrābhiṣekeṇa yujyate jñātivardhanaḥ ॥13-109-26॥
[श्रावणम् (śrāvaṇam) - the month of Śrāvaṇa; नियतः (niyataḥ) - self-controlled; मासम् (māsam) - month; एकभक्तेन (ekabhaktena) - by (taking) one meal (per day); यः (yaḥ) - who; क्षपेत् (kṣapet) - spends (passes through); यत्र (yatra) - where; तत्र (tatra) - there; अभिषेकेण (abhiṣekeṇa) - by consecration (by ritual bathing); युज्यते (yujyate) - is associated (with, attains, is honored); ज्ञातिवर्धनः (jñātivardhanaḥ) - one who increases the family (renowned in lineage);]
(The month of Śrāvaṇa, self-controlled, the month, by one meal (per day), who spends, where there, by consecration, is associated, one who increases the family.)
Whoever, being self-controlled, spends the month of Śrāvaṇa subsisting on one meal a day, wherever ritual bathing is performed, is honored as one who causes the growth of his lineage. (13-109-26)
प्रौष्ठपदं तु यो मासमेकाहारो भवेन्नरः। धनाढ्यं स्फीतमचलमैश्वर्यं प्रतिपद्यते ॥१३-१०९-२७॥
prauṣṭhapadaṁ tu yo māsamekāhāro bhavennaraḥ। dhanāḍhyaṁ sphītamacalamaiśvaryaṁ pratipadyate ॥13-109-27॥
[प्रौष्ठपदं (prauṣṭhapadam) - the month of Bhādrapada; तु (tu) - but; यः (yaḥ) - who; मासम् (māsam) - for a month; एकाहारः (ekāhāraḥ) - one meal; भवेत् (bhavet) - would be; नरः (naraḥ) - man; धनाढ्यम् (dhanāḍhyam) - rich; स्फीतम् (sphītam) - prosperous; अचलम् (acalam) - unmoving; ऐश्वर्यम् (aiśvaryam) - sovereignty; प्रतिपद्यते (pratipadyate) - obtains;]
(But who for a month, one meal would be man, rich, prosperous, unmoving sovereignty obtains.)
But the man who, in the month of Bhādrapada, subsists on one meal a day for a month obtains stable, abundant, and unshakable wealth and sovereignty. (13-109-27)
तथैवाश्वयुजं मासमेकभक्तेन यः क्षपेत्। प्रजावान्वाहनाढ्यश्च बहुपुत्रश्च जायते ॥१३-१०९-२८॥
tathaivāśvayujaṃ māsamekabhaktena yaḥ kṣapet। prajāvānvāhanāḍhyaśca bahuputraśca jāyate ॥13-109-28॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; अश्वयुजम् (aśvayujam) - Aśvayuja (the lunar month; name of a month); मासम् (māsam) - month; एकभक्तेन (ekabhaktena) - with one meal; यः (yaḥ) - who; क्षपेत् (kṣapet) - passes (spends); प्रजावान् (prajāvān) - possessed of offspring; वाहनाढ्यः (vāhanāḍhyaḥ) - wealthy in vehicles; च (ca) - and; बहुपुत्रः (bahuputraḥ) - having many sons; च (ca) - and; जायते (jāyate) - is born (becomes; is produced);]
(In the same way, the one who passes the month of Aśvayuja with one meal becomes possessed of offspring, wealthy in vehicles, and having many sons.)
Likewise, whoever spends the month of Aśvayuja taking only one meal is born with many children, abundant vehicles, and much progeny. (13-109-28)
कार्त्तिकं तु नरो मासं यः कुर्यादेकभोजनम्। शूरश्च बहुभार्यश्च कीर्तिमांश्चैव जायते ॥१३-१०९-२९॥
kārttikaṁ tu naro māsaṁ yaḥ kuryād ekabhojanam। śūraś ca bahubhāryaś ca kīrtimāṁś caiva jāyate ॥13-109-29॥
[कार्त्तिकं (kārttikam) - the month of Kārtika; तु (tu) - but; नरः (naraḥ) - a man; मासं (māsaṁ) - month; यः (yaḥ) - who; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - would practice; एकभोजनम् (ekabhojanam) - one meal (per day); शूरः (śūraḥ) - valiant; च (ca) - and; बहुभार्यः (bahubhāryaḥ) - having many wives; च (ca) - and; कीर्तिमान् (kīrtimān) - renowned; चैव (caiva) - and indeed; जायते (jāyate) - is born (becomes);]
(But a man who in the month of Kārtika would practice one meal, valiant and having many wives and renowned and indeed is born.)
But a man who observes one meal per day during the month of Kārtika becomes valiant, the possessor of many wives, and renowned. (13-109-29)
इति मासा नरव्याघ्र क्षपतां परिकीर्तिताः। तिथीनां नियमा ये तु शृणु तानपि पार्थिव ॥१३-१०९-३०॥
iti māsā naravyāghra kṣapatāṃ parikīrtitāḥ. tithīnāṃ niyamā ye tu śṛṇu tān api pārthiva ॥13-109-30॥
[इति (iti) - thus; मासा (māsā) - months; नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) - O tiger among men; क्षपतां (kṣapatām) - of those who perform expiation; परिकीर्तिताः (parikīrtitāḥ) - have been described; तिथीनां (tithīnāṃ) - of lunar days; नियमा (niyamā) - rules; ये (ye) - which; तु (tu) - but; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; तान् (tān) - them; अपि (api) - also; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king;]
(Thus months, O tiger among men, of those who perform expiation have been described. Of lunar days the rules which but hear them also, O king.)
Thus, O tiger among men, the months for those who perform expiations have been described. Now hear also, O king, the rules regarding the lunar days. (13-109-30)
पक्षे पक्षे गते यस्तु भक्तमश्नाति भारत। गवाढ्यो बहुपुत्रश्च दीर्घायुश्च स जायते ॥१३-१०९-३१॥
pakṣe pakṣe gate yastu bhaktam aśnāti bhārata। gavāḍhyo bahuputraś ca dīrghāyuś ca sa jāyate ॥13-109-31॥
[पक्षे (pakṣe) - in a fortnight; पक्षे (pakṣe) - in a fortnight; गते (gate) - having passed; यः (yaḥ) - who; तु (tu) - indeed; भक्तम् (bhaktam) - cooked rice; अश्नाति (aśnāti) - eats; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; गवाढ्यः (gavāḍhyaḥ) - rich in cattle; बहुपुत्रः (bahuputraḥ) - having many sons; च (ca) - and; दीर्घायुः (dīrghāyuḥ) - long-lived; च (ca) - and; सः (saḥ) - he; जायते (jāyate) - is born;]
(In a fortnight, in a fortnight, when passed, who indeed eats cooked rice, O Bhārata, rich in cattle, having many sons, and long-lived, and he is born.)
O Bhārata, he who eats rice at the end of every fortnight becomes rich in cattle, has many sons, and becomes long-lived. (13-109-31)
मासि मासि त्रिरात्राणि कृत्वा वर्षाणि द्वादश। गणाधिपत्यं प्राप्नोति निःसपत्नमनाविलम् ॥१३-१०९-३२॥
māsi māsi trirātrāṇi kṛtvā varṣāṇi dvādaśa। gaṇādhipatyaṃ prāpnoti niḥsapatnamanāvilam॥13-109-32॥
[मासि मासि (māsi māsi) - in month, month; (every) month; त्रिरात्राणि (trirātrāṇi) - three nights; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; वर्षाणि (varṣāṇi) - years; द्वादश (dvādaśa) - twelve; गणाधिपत्यं (gaṇādhipatyaṃ) - chieftainship of the group; leadership; प्राप्नोति (prāpnoti) - attains; निर्स्पत्नम् (niḥsapatnam) - without rival; अनाविलम् (anāvilam) - undisturbed;]
(Month by month, having performed (for) three nights, (over a period of) twelve years, he attains the chieftainship of the group, without rival and undisturbed.)
By performing the practice for three nights every month for twelve years, one attains undisturbed chieftainship of the group, free of rivals. (13-109-32)
एते तु नियमाः सर्वे कर्तव्याः शरदो दश। द्वे चान्ये भरतश्रेष्ठ प्रवृत्तिमनुवर्तता ॥१३-१०९-३३॥
ete tu niyamāḥ sarve kartavyāḥ śarado daśa. dve cānye bharataśreṣṭha pravṛttimanuvartatā ॥13-109-33॥
[एते (ete) - these; तु (tu) - but; नियमाः (niyamāḥ) - rules; सर्वे (sarve) - all; कर्तव्याः (kartavyāḥ) - to be performed; शरदो (śarado) - years (autumnal cycles); दश (daśa) - ten; द्वे (dve) - two; च (ca) - and; अन्ये (anye) - others; भरतश्रेष्ठ (bharataśreṣṭha) - O best of the Bharatas; प्रवृत्तिमनुवर्तता (pravṛttimanuvartatā) - by following activity;]
(These but rules all are to be performed for ten years; and two others, O best of the Bharatas, by following activity.)
But all these rules should be observed for ten years; and, O best of the Bharatas, the other two by those who pursue activity. (13-109-33)
यस्तु प्रातस्तथा सायं भुञ्जानो नान्तरा पिबेत्। अहिंसानिरतो नित्यं जुह्वानो जातवेदसम् ॥१३-१०९-३४॥
yastu prātas tathā sāyaṁ bhuñjāno nāntarā pibet। ahiṁsānirato nityaṁ juhvāno jātavedasam ॥13-109-34॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; तु (tu) - but; प्रातः (prātaḥ) - in the morning; तथा (tathā) - as well as; likewise; सायं (sāyam) - in the evening; भुञ्जानः (bhuñjānaḥ) - eating; consuming; न (na) - not; अन्तरा (antarā) - between; in the interval; पिबेत् (pibet) - should drink; अहिंसा-निरतः (ahiṁsā-nirataḥ) - engaged in non-injury; devoted to non-violence; नित्यं (nityaṁ) - always; जुह्वानः (juhvānaḥ) - performing oblations; जातवेदसम् (jātavedasam) - to (the fire deity) Jātavedas;]
(Who but in the morning as well as in the evening eating, not in the intervals should drink; engaged in non-injury always performing oblations to Jātavedas.)
But he who eats in the morning and likewise in the evening, and does not drink in the intervals, who is always devoted to non-violence and continually offers oblations to Jātavedas (fire), (is approved). (13-109-34)
षड्भिः स वर्षैर्नृपते सिध्यते नात्र संशयः। अग्निष्टोमस्य यज्ञस्य फलं प्राप्नोति मानवः ॥१३-१०९-३५॥
ṣaḍbhiḥ sa varṣair nṛpate sidhyate nātra saṃśayaḥ। agniṣṭomasya yajñasya phalaṃ prāpnoti mānavaḥ॥13-109-35॥
[षड्भिः (ṣaḍbhiḥ) - by six (years); स (sa) - he; वर्षैः (varṣaiḥ) - with years; नृपते (nṛpate) - O king; सिध्यते (sidhyate) - is accomplished; न (na) - not; अत्र (atra) - here; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt; अग्निष्टोमस्य (agniṣṭomasya) - of Agniṣṭoma; यज्ञस्य (yajñasya) - of the sacrifice; फलं (phalaṃ) - fruit; प्राप्नोति (prāpnoti) - obtains; मानवः (mānavaḥ) - man;]
(By six years he, O king, is accomplished; not here doubt; of Agniṣṭoma sacrifice fruit obtains man.)
O king, in six years it is accomplished; there is no doubt in this. A man obtains the fruit of the Agniṣṭoma sacrifice. (13-109-35)
अधिवासे सोऽप्सरसां नृत्यगीतविनादिते। तप्तकाञ्चनवर्णाभं विमानमधिरोहति ॥१३-१०९-३६॥
adhivāse so'psarasāṃ nṛtya-gīta-vinā-adite. tapta-kāñcana-varṇābhaṃ vimānam adhirohati ॥13-109-36॥
[अधिवासे (adhivāse) - in the abode; सः (saḥ) - he; अप्सरसाम् (apsarasām) - of the apsarases; नृत्यगीतविनादिते (nṛtya-gīta-vinā-adite) - resounding with dance, song, and lute; तप्तकाञ्चनवर्णाभम् (tapta-kāñcana-varṇābham) - having the luster of molten gold; विमानम् (vimānam) - a celestial chariot; अधिरोहति (adhirohati) - ascends;]
(In the abode resounding with dance, song, and lute of the apsarases, he ascends the celestial chariot having the luster of molten gold.)
He ascends the celestial chariot, radiant like molten gold, in the abode of the apsarases, which resounds with dance, song, and lute. (13-109-36)
पूर्णं वर्षसहस्रं तु ब्रह्मलोके महीयते। तत्क्षयादिह चागम्य माहात्म्यं प्रतिपद्यते ॥१३-१०९-३७॥
pūrṇaṃ varṣasahasraṃ tu brahmaloke mahīyate। tatkṣayādiha cāgamya māhātmyaṃ pratipadyate॥13-109-37॥
[पूर्णम् (pūrṇam) - full; complete; वर्षसहस्रम् (varṣasahasram) - thousand of years; तु (tu) - but; however; ब्रह्मलोके (brahmaloke) - in the world of Brahma; महीयते (mahīyate) - is honored; is revered; तत् (tat) - that; क्षयात् (kṣayāt) - after the ending; after the destruction; इह (iha) - here; च (ca) - and; आगम्य (āgamya) - having arrived; माहात्म्यम् (māhātmyam) - greatness; majesty; प्रतिपद्यते (pratipadyate) - is attained; is acquired;]
(Full thousand years but in the world of Brahma is honored. After the ending of that, here and having arrived, greatness is attained.)
A full thousand years is honored in Brahma's world; and after the end of that period, coming here, greatness is attained. (13-109-37)
यस्तु संवत्सरं पूर्णमेकाहारो भवेन्नरः। अतिरात्रस्य यज्ञस्य स फलं समुपाश्नुते ॥१३-१०९-३८॥
yastu saṁvatsaraṁ pūrṇamekāhāro bhavennaraḥ। atirātrasya yajñasya sa phalaṁ samupāśnute॥13-109-38॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; तु (tu) - but; संवत्सरं (saṁvatsaram) - year; पूर्णम् (pūrṇam) - full; एकाहारः (ekāhāraḥ) - one-meal-a-day person; भवेत् (bhavet) - becomes; नरः (naraḥ) - man; अतिरात्रस्य (atirātrasya) - of Atirātra; यज्ञस्य (yajñasya) - of sacrifice; सः (saḥ) - he; फलं (phalam) - fruit; समुपाश्नुते (samupāśnute) - attains;]
(But who, for a full year, is an eater of one meal, that man attains the fruit of the Atirātra sacrifice.)
But the man who takes only one meal a day for a full year attains the fruit of performing the Atirātra sacrifice. (13-109-38)
दशवर्षसहस्राणि स्वर्गे च स महीयते। तत्क्षयादिह चागम्य माहात्म्यं प्रतिपद्यते ॥१३-१०९-३९॥
daśavarṣasahasrāṇi svarge ca sa mahīyate। tatkṣayādiha cāgamya māhātmyaṃ pratipadyate ॥13-109-39॥
[दशवर्षसहस्राणि (daśavarṣasahasrāṇi) - ten thousand years; स्वर्गे (svarge) - in heaven; च (ca) - and; स (sa) - he; महीयते (mahīyate) - is honored; तत्क्षयात् (tatkṣayāt) - when that (period) expires; इह (iha) - here; च (ca) - and; आगम्य (āgamya) - having come; माहात्म्यम् (māhātmyaṃ) - greatness; प्रतिपद्यते (pratipadyate) - obtains;]
(Ten thousand years in heaven and he is honored. When that (period) expires, here and having come, greatness he obtains.)
He is honored in heaven for ten thousand years, and after that period ends, when he comes here, he attains greatness. (13-109-39)
यस्तु संवत्सरं पूर्णं चतुर्थं भक्तमश्नुते। अहिंसानिरतो नित्यं सत्यवाङ्नियतेन्द्रियः ॥१३-१०९-४०॥
yastu saṁvatsaraṁ pūrṇaṁ caturthaṁ bhaktamaśnute। ahiṁsānirato nityaṁ satyavāṅniyatendriyaḥ ॥13-109-40॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; तु (tu) - but; संवत्सरं (saṁvatsaram) - year; पूर्णं (pūrṇam) - full; चतुर्थं (caturtham) - fourth; भक्तम् (bhaktam) - food; अश्नुते (aśnute) - eats; अहिंसा-निरतः (ahiṁsā-nirataḥ) - engaged in non-violence; नित्यं (nityam) - always; सत्यवाक् (satyavāk) - speaking truth; नियत-इन्द्रियः (niyata-indriyaḥ) - with controlled senses;]
(Who, however, a full year, on the fourth (day), food eats; engaged in non-violence, always, speaking truth, with controlled senses.)
But he who, for a full year, eats food on every fourth day, always devoted to non-violence, ever truthful, and with controlled senses— (13-109-40)
वाजपेयस्य यज्ञस्य फलं वै समुपाश्नुते। त्रिंशद्वर्षसहस्राणि स्वर्गे च स महीयते ॥१३-१०९-४१॥
vājapeyasya yajñasya phalaṃ vai samupāśnute. triṁśad-varṣa-sahasrāṇi svarge ca sa mahīyate ॥13-109-41॥
[वाजपेयस्य (vājapeyasya) - of the Vājapeya (sacrifice); यज्ञस्य (yajñasya) - of the sacrifice; फलं (phalaṃ) - fruit; वै (vai) - indeed; समुपाश्नुते (samupāśnute) - he attains; त्रिंशद्वर्षसहस्राणि (triṁśad-varṣa-sahasrāṇi) - thirty thousand years; स्वर्गे (svarge) - in heaven; च (ca) - and; स (sa) - he; महीयते (mahīyate) - is honored;]
(The fruit of the Vājapeya sacrifice indeed he attains. Thirty thousand years in heaven and he is honored.)
He who performs the Vājapeya sacrifice indeed attains its fruit. He is honored in heaven for thirty thousand years. (13-109-41)
षष्ठे काले तु कौन्तेय नरः संवत्सरं क्षपेत्। अश्वमेधस्य यज्ञस्य फलं प्राप्नोति मानवः ॥१३-१०९-४२॥
ṣaṣṭhe kāle tu kaunteya naraḥ saṃvatsaraṃ kṣapet। aśvamedhasya yajñasya phalaṃ prāpnoti mānavaḥ ॥13-109-42॥
[षष्ठे (ṣaṣṭhe) - in the sixth; काले (kāle) - period; तु (tu) - indeed; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kuntī; नरः (naraḥ) - man; संवत्सरं (saṃvatsaraṃ) - a year; क्षपेत् (kṣapet) - should pass; अश्वमेधस्य (aśvamedhasya) - of the aśvamedha (horse sacrifice); यज्ञस्य (yajñasya) - of the sacrifice; फलं (phalaṃ) - fruit; प्राप्नोति (prāpnoti) - obtains; मानवः (mānavaḥ) - a human;]
(In the sixth period indeed, O Kaunteya, a man should spend a year; the fruit of the aśvamedha sacrifice a human obtains.)
O son of Kuntī, if a man passes a year in the sixth period, he attains the fruit of the aśvamedha sacrifice. (13-109-42)
चक्रवाकप्रयुक्तेन विमानेन स गच्छति। चत्वारिंशत्सहस्राणि वर्षाणां दिवि मोदते ॥१३-१०९-४३॥
cakravākaprayuktena vimānena sa gacchati। catvāriṃśatsahasrāṇi varṣāṇāṃ divi modate ॥13-109-43॥
[चक्रवाकप्रयुक्तेन (cakravākaprayuktena) - by that which is propelled by chakravāka; (cakravāka - a kind of bird, prayukta - driven, propelled; instrumental singular); विमानेन (vimānena) - by an aerial vehicle; (instrumental singular); स (sa) - he; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes; चत्वारिंशत्सहस्राणि (catvāriṃśatsahasrāṇi) - forty thousand; वर्षाणां (varṣāṇāṃ) - of years; दिवि (divi) - in heaven; मोदते (modate) - enjoys; rejoices;]
(He goes by an aerial vehicle propelled by chakravāka. Forty thousand of years in heaven enjoys.)
He travels by an aerial vehicle driven by chakravāka birds and enjoys forty thousand years in heaven. (13-109-43)
अष्टमेन तु भक्तेन जीवन्संवत्सरं नृप। गवामयस्य यज्ञस्य फलं प्राप्नोति मानवः ॥१३-१०९-४४॥
aṣṭamena tu bhaktena jīvan saṃvatsaraṃ nṛpa। gavāmayasya yajñasya phalaṃ prāpnoti mānavaḥ ॥13-109-44॥
[अष्टमेन (aṣṭamena) - by the eighth; तु (tu) - but; भक्तेन (bhaktena) - by a devotee; जीवन् (jīvan) - living; संवत्सरं (saṃvatsaram) - a year; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; गवामयस्य (gavāmayasya) - of a cow-made; यज्ञस्य (yajñasya) - of the sacrifice; फलं (phalam) - fruit; प्राप्नोति (prāpnoti) - obtains; मानवः (mānavaḥ) - man;]
(By the eighth but by a devotee living a year, O king, the man obtains the fruit of the cow-made sacrifice.)
But O king, by observing (this fast) for the eighth time as a devotee while living for a year, a man obtains the fruit of the gavāmaya (cow-sacrifice). (13-109-44)
हंससारसयुक्तेन विमानेन स गच्छति। पञ्चाशतं सहस्राणि वर्षाणां दिवि मोदते ॥१३-१०९-४५॥
haṁsasārasayuktena vimānena sa gacchati। pañcāśataṁ sahasrāṇi varṣāṇāṁ divi modate॥13-109-45॥
[हंससारसयुक्तेन (haṁsasārasayuktena) - with swan-and-crane-endowed; विमानेन (vimānena) - by the aerial vehicle; स (sa) - he; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes; पञ्चाशतं (pañcāśatam) - fifty; सहस्राणि (sahasrāṇi) - thousand; वर्षाणां (varṣāṇām) - of years; दिवि (divi) - in heaven; मोदते (modate) - rejoices;]
(With a vehicle endowed with swans and cranes he goes. Fifty thousand years he rejoices in heaven.)
He departs in a vehicle drawn by swans and cranes. In heaven he enjoys happiness for fifty thousand years. (13-109-45)
पक्षे पक्षे गते राजन्योऽश्नीयाद्वर्षमेव तु। षण्मासानशनं तस्य भगवानङ्गिराब्रवीत् ॥ षष्टिं वर्षसहस्राणि दिवमावसते च सः ॥१३-१०९-४६॥
pakṣe pakṣe gate rājanyo'śnīyād varṣam eva tu। ṣaṇmāsānaśanaṃ tasya bhagavān aṅgirābravīt॥ ṣaṣṭiṃ varṣasahasrāṇi divam āvasate ca saḥ॥13-109-46॥
[पक्षे (pakṣe) - in a fortnight; (i.e., each pakṣa); पक्षे (pakṣe) - in a fortnight; (i.e., each pakṣa); गते (gate) - having passed; having gone; राजन्यः (rājanyaḥ) - a Kṣatriya; prince; अश्नीयात् (aśnīyāt) - should eat; वर्षम् (varṣam) - the year; annual; एव (eva) - only; indeed; तु (tu) - but; षण्मासान् (ṣaṇmāsān) - six months; अशनम् (aśanam) - eating; food; तस्य (tasya) - of him; his; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Venerable; the Lord; अङ्गिरा (aṅgirā) - Angiras (proper noun); अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; षष्टिम् (ṣaṣṭim) - sixty; वर्षसहस्राणि (varṣasahasrāṇi) - thousands of years; दिवम् (divam) - heaven; आवसते (āvasate) - resides; dwells; च (ca) - and; सः (saḥ) - he;]
(When fortnight by fortnight passes, a Kṣatriya should eat only once in a year. The Venerable Angiras said this six-month eating (vow) of his. He dwells in heaven for sixty thousand years.)
As each fortnight passes, a Kṣatriya should eat only once in a year; regarding this vow of six-months eating, the Venerable Angiras said that he (who observes it) resides in heaven for sixty thousand years. (13-109-46)
वीणानां वल्लकीनां च वेणूनां च विशां पते। सुघोषैर्मधुरैः शब्दैः सुप्तः स प्रतिबोध्यते ॥१३-१०९-४७॥
vīṇānāṃ vallakīnām ca veṇūnām ca viśāṃ pate। sughoṣair madhuraiḥ śabdaiḥ suptaḥ sa pratibodhyate॥13-109-47॥
[वीणानाम् (vīṇānām) - of vīṇās (lutes); वल्लकीनाम् (vallakīnām) - of vallakīs (harps); च (ca) - and; वेणूनाम् (veṇūnām) - of veṇūs (flutes); च (ca) - and; विशां (viśām) - of the peoples; पते (pate) - O lord; सुघोषैः (sughoṣaiḥ) - with sweet sounds; मधुरैः (madhuraiḥ) - with melodious (ones); शब्दैः (śabdaiḥ) - with sounds; सुप्तः (suptaḥ) - asleep; स (sa) - he; प्रतिबोध्यते (pratibodhyate) - is awakened;]
(Of vīṇās, of vallakīs and of veṇūs, and O lord of the peoples, with sweet, melodious sounds, asleep, he is awakened.)
O lord of the peoples, he who is asleep is awakened by the sweet and melodious sounds of vīṇās, vallakīs, and veṇūs (stringed and wind instruments). (13-109-47)
संवत्सरमिहैकं तु मासि मासि पिबेत्पयः। फलं विश्वजितस्तात प्राप्नोति स नरो नृप ॥१३-१०९-४८॥
saṃvatsaram iha ekaṃ tu māsi māsi pibet payaḥ। phalaṃ viśvajitas tāta prāpnoti sa naro nṛpa॥13-109-48॥
[संवत्सरम् (saṃvatsaram) - year; इह (iha) - here; एकम् (ekaṃ) - one; तु (tu) - but; मासि मासि (māsi māsi) - month by month; पिबेत् (pibet) - should drink; पयः (payaḥ) - milk; फलं (phalaṃ) - fruit; विश्वजितः (viśvajitaḥ) - of Viśvajit (sacrifice); तात (tāta) - dear one; प्राप्नोति (prāpnoti) - obtains; स (sa) - he; नरः (naraḥ) - man; नृप (nṛpa) - O king;]
(Here, but for one year, month by month, one should drink milk; the fruit of the Viśvajit, dear one, he, the man, obtains, O king.)
O king, here, if a man drinks only milk every month for a year, dear one, he obtains the fruit of the Viśvajit sacrifice. (13-109-48)
सिंहव्याघ्रप्रयुक्तेन विमानेन स गच्छति। सप्ततिं च सहस्राणि वर्षाणां दिवि मोदते ॥१३-१०९-४९॥
siṃhavyāghraprayuktena vimānena sa gacchati। saptatiṃ ca sahasrāṇi varṣāṇāṃ divi modate ॥13-109-49॥
[सिंहव्याघ्रप्रयुक्तेन (siṃhavyāghraprayuktena) - by a vehicle drawn by lions and tigers; विमानेन (vimānena) - by a celestial vehicle; स (sa) - he; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes; सप्ततिं (saptatiṃ) - seventy; च (ca) - and; सहस्राणि (sahasrāṇi) - thousands; वर्षाणां (varṣāṇāṃ) - of years; दिवि (divi) - in heaven; मोदते (modate) - enjoys;]
(By a vehicle drawn by lions and tigers, by a celestial vehicle, he goes. Seventy and thousands of years in heaven he enjoys. (13-109-49))
He travels in a celestial vehicle drawn by lions and tigers. He enjoys seventy thousand years in heaven. (13-109-49)
मासादूर्ध्वं नरव्याघ्र नोपवासो विधीयते। विधिं त्वनशनस्याहुः पार्थ धर्मविदो जनाः ॥१३-१०९-५०॥
māsād ūrdhvaṃ naravyāghra nopavāso vidhīyate। vidhiṃ tv anaśanasya āhuḥ pārtha dharmavido janāḥ॥13-109-50॥
[मासात् (māsāt) - from a month; ऊर्ध्वम् (ūrdhvam) - after; नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) - O tiger among men; न (na) - not; उपवासः (upavāsaḥ) - fasting; विधीयते (vidhīyate) - is prescribed; विधिं (vidhiṃ) - the procedure; तु (tu) - however; अनशनस्य (anaśanasya) - of non-eating; आहुः (āhuḥ) - (they) declare; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pṛthā; धर्मविदः (dharmavidaḥ) - knowers of dharma; जनाः (janāḥ) - people;]
(From a month after, O tiger among men, fasting is not prescribed; however, the procedure of non-eating, O son of Pṛthā, knowers of dharma declare, people.)
O tiger among men, after a month, fasting is no longer prescribed; but, O son of Pṛthā, people who know dharma declare the procedure of abstaining from food. (13-109-50)
अनार्तो व्याधिरहितो गच्छेदनशनं तु यः। पदे पदे यज्ञफलं स प्राप्नोति न संशयः ॥१३-१०९-५१॥
anārto vyādhirahito gacched anaśanaṁ tu yaḥ। pade pade yajñaphalaṁ sa prāpnoti na saṁśayaḥ॥13-109-51॥
[अनार्तः (anārtaḥ) - free from distress; व्याधि-रहितः (vyādhi-rahitaḥ) - free from disease; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; अनशनम् (anaśanam) - fasting; तु (tu) - however; यः (yaḥ) - who; पदे पदे (pade pade) - at every step; यज्ञ-फलं (yajña-phalam) - the fruit of sacrifice; सः (saḥ) - he; प्राप्नोति (prāpnoti) - obtains; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṁśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(Free from distress, free from disease, he should go fasting however, who, at every step, the fruit of sacrifice, he obtains, not doubt.)
He who, being free from distress and free from disease, observes fasting—such a one obtains the fruit of a sacrifice at every step; there is no doubt about this. (13-109-51)
दिवं हंसप्रयुक्तेन विमानेन स गच्छति। शतं चाप्सरसः कन्या रमयन्त्यपि तं नरम् ॥१३-१०९-५२॥
divaṁ haṁsaprayuktena vimānena sa gacchati। śataṁ cāpsarasaḥ kanyā ramayantyapi taṁ naram ॥13-109-52॥
[दिवं (divam) - heaven; हंसप्रयुक्तेन (haṁsa-prayuktena) - drawn by swans; विमानेन (vimānena) - by an aerial car; स (sa) - he; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes; शतं (śatam) - a hundred; च (ca) - and; अप्सरसः (apsarasaḥ) - of Apsarases; कन्या (kanyāḥ) - maidens; रमयन्ति (ramayanti) - make happy; अपि (api) - also; तं (tam) - him; नरम् (naram) - man;]
(He goes to heaven by an aerial car drawn by swans. Also, a hundred maidens of the Apsarases make that man happy.)
He goes to heaven in an aerial chariot drawn by swans, and a hundred Apsaras maidens also delight that man. (13-109-52)
आर्तो वा व्याधितो वापि गच्छेदनशनं तु यः। शतं वर्षसहस्राणां मोदते दिवि स प्रभो ॥ काञ्चीनूपुरशब्देन सुप्तश्चैव प्रबोध्यते ॥१३-१०९-५३॥
ārto vā vyādhito vāpi gacched anaśanaṃ tu yaḥ। śataṃ varṣasahasrāṇāṃ modate divi sa prabho ॥ kāñcīnūpuraśabdena suptaś caiva prabodhyate ॥13-109-53॥
[आर्तः (ārtaḥ) (ārtaḥ) - distressed; वा (vā) (vā) - or; व्याधितः (vyādhitaḥ) (vyādhitaḥ) - diseased; वा (vā) (vā) - or; अपि (api) (api) - even; also; गच्छेत् (gacchet) (gacchet) - might go; अनशनं (anaśanam) (anaśanam) - fasting; तु (tu) (tu) - but; यः (yaḥ) (yaḥ) - who; शतम् (śatam) (śatam) - a hundred; वर्ष-सहस्राणाम् (varṣa-sahasrāṇām) (varṣa-sahasrāṇām) - of thousands of years; मोदते (modate) (modate) - enjoys; दिवि (divi) (divi) - in heaven; स (sa) (sa) - he; प्रभो (prabho) (prabho) - O Lord; काञ्ची-नूपुर-शब्देन (kāñcī-nūpura-śabdena) (kāñcī-nūpura-śabdena) - with the sound of girdle and anklets; सुप्तः (suptaḥ) (suptaḥ) - asleep; च (ca) (ca) - and; एव (eva) (eva) - indeed; प्रबोध्यते (prabodhyate) (prabodhyate) - is awakened;]
(Distressed or diseased, or even (he) who might go fasting, but who, O Lord, for a hundred thousands of years enjoys in heaven; he is awakened from sleep indeed by the sound of girdle and anklets.)
O Lord, even if a person, though distressed or afflicted with disease, observes a fast and goes, he enjoys happiness in heaven for a hundred thousand years; he is awakened from his sleep by the jingling sound of girdles and anklets. (13-109-53)
सहस्रहंससंयुक्ते विमाने सोमवर्चसि। स गत्वा स्त्रीशताकीर्णे रमते भरतर्षभ ॥१३-१०९-५४॥
sahasra-haṁsa-saṁyukte vimāne soma-varcasi। sa gatvā strī-śata-ākīrṇe ramate bharata-ṛṣabha ॥13-109-54॥
[सहस्र (sahasra) - thousand; हंस (haṁsa) - swan; संयुक्ते (saṁyukte) - joined with; विमाने (vimāne) - in the aerial car; सोमवर्चसि (soma-varcasi) - having the brilliance of soma; स (sa) - he; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; स्त्री (strī) - women; शत (śata) - hundred; आकीर्णे (ākīrṇe) - filled with; रमते (ramate) - enjoys; भरतर्षभ (bharata-ṛṣabha) - bull among the Bharatas;]
(In the aerial car joined with a thousand swans, having the brilliance of soma, he, having gone to the place filled with a hundred women, enjoys, O bull among the Bharatas.)
O bull among the Bharatas, in the aerial car drawn by a thousand swans and shining with the luster of soma, he goes and enjoys among a hundred women. (13-109-54)
क्षीणस्याप्यायनं दृष्टं क्षतस्य क्षतरोहणम्। व्याधितस्यौषधग्रामः क्रुद्धस्य च प्रसादनम् ॥१३-१०९-५५॥
kṣīṇasyāpyāyanaṃ dṛṣṭaṃ kṣatasya kṣatarohaṇam। vyādhitasyauṣadhagrāmaḥ kruddhasya ca prasādanam ॥13-109-55॥
[क्षीणस्य (kṣīṇasya) - of the diminished; अप्यायनं (apyāyanam) - restoration; दृष्टं (dṛṣṭam) - seen; क्षतस्य (kṣatasya) - of the wounded; क्षतरोहणम् (kṣatarohaṇam) - healing of wound; व्याधितस्य (vyādhitasya) - of the diseased; औषधग्रामः (auṣadhagrāmaḥ) - group of medicines; क्रुद्धस्य (kruddhasya) - of the angry; च (ca) - and; प्रसादनम् (prasādanam) - pacification;]
(Of the diminished, restoration is seen; of the wounded, healing of the wound; of the diseased, a group of medicines; and of the angry, pacification.)
Restoration is seen for those who are diminished; wound healing for the wounded; a collection of medicines for the diseased; and pacification for the angry. (13-109-55)
दुःखितस्यार्थमानाभ्यां द्रव्याणां प्रतिपादनम्। न चैते स्वर्गकामस्य रोचन्ते सुखमेधसः ॥१३-१०९-५६॥
duḥkhitasya artham anābhyām dravyāṇāṃ pratipādanam। na ca ete svargakāmasya rocante sukhamedhasaḥ॥13-109-56॥
[दुःखितस्य (duḥkhitasya) - of the afflicted; अर्थमानाभ्यां (artham anābhyām) - by urgent request; द्रव्याणां (dravyāṇām) - of possessions; प्रतिपादनम् (pratipādanam) - giving; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एते (ete) - these; स्वर्गकामस्य (svargakāmasya) - of one desiring heaven; रोचन्ते (rocante) - are pleasing; सुखमेधसः (sukhameḍhasaḥ) - for one intent on happiness;]
(Of the afflicted, by urgent request, giving of possessions, not and these of one desiring heaven are pleasing for one intent on happiness.)
Giving away possessions to the afflicted, when pressed by urgent request, is not pleasing to one who desires heaven and cherishes happiness. (13-109-56)
अतः स कामसंयुक्तो विमाने हेमसंनिभे। रमते स्त्रीशताकीर्णे पुरुषोऽलङ्कृतः शुभे ॥१३-१०९-५७॥
ataḥ sa kāmasaṁyukto vimāne hemasaṁnibhe। ramate strīśatākīrṇe puruṣo'laṅkṛtaḥ śubhe ॥13-109-57॥
[अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; स (sa) - he; कामसंयुक्तः (kāmasaṁyuktaḥ) - united with desire; विमाने (vimāne) - in an aerial chariot; हेमसंनिभे (hemasaṁnibhe) - golden-like; रमते (ramate) - rejoices; स्त्रीशताकीर्णे (strīśatākīrṇe) - filled with hundreds of women; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - the man; अलङ्कृतः (alaṅkṛtaḥ) - adorned; शुभे (śubhe) - auspicious;]
(Therefore he, united with desire, in an aerial chariot golden-like, rejoices, filled with hundreds of women, the man adorned, auspicious.)
Therefore, united with desire, the adorned man rejoices in an auspicious aerial chariot, golden in appearance and filled with hundreds of women. (13-109-57)
स्वस्थः सफलसङ्कल्पः सुखी विगतकल्मषः। अनश्नन्देहमुत्सृज्य फलं प्राप्नोति मानवः ॥१३-१०९-५८॥
svasthaḥ saphalasaṅkalpaḥ sukhī vigatakalmaṣaḥ। anaśnan deham utsṛjya phalaṃ prāpnoti mānavaḥ॥13-109-58॥
[स्वस्थः (svasthaḥ) - being self-possessed; सफलसङ्कल्पः (saphalasaṅkalpaḥ) - with effective resolve; सुखी (sukhī) - happy; विगतकल्मषः (vigatakalmaṣaḥ) - one whose impurity is gone; अनश्नन् (anaśnan) - not eating; देहम् (deham) - body; उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - having abandoned; फलं (phalam) - fruit; प्राप्नोति (prāpnoti) - obtains; मानवः (mānavaḥ) - man;]
(Self-possessed, with effective resolve, happy, one whose impurity is gone, not eating, having abandoned the body, man obtains the fruit.)
The self-possessed, resolute, happy, and pure man, without eating and having abandoned the body, attains the fruit. (13-109-58)
बालसूर्यप्रतीकाशे विमाने हेमवर्चसि। वैडूर्यमुक्ताखचिते वीणामुरजनादिते ॥१३-१०९-५९॥
bālasūryapratīkāśe vimāne hemavarcasi। vaiḍūryamuktākhacite vīṇāmurajanādite ॥13-109-59॥
[बाल (bāla) - young; child; सूर्य (sūrya) - sun; प्रतीकाशे (pratīkāśe) - resembling; shining like; विमाने (vimāne) - in the palace; in the aerial car; हेमवर्चसि (hemavarcasi) - having golden splendor; वैडूर्य (vaiḍūrya) - cat's eye gem; beryl; मुक्ता (muktā) - pearl; आखचिते (ākhacite) - inlaid with; set with; वीणा (vīṇā) - veena; lute; मुरज (muraja) - drum; नादिते (nādita) - made to resound; echoing;]
(In the palace resembling the young sun, possessing golden splendor, adorned with cat's eye gems and pearls, made to resound with the veena and drum.)
In a palace shimmering like the rising sun, bright with golden radiance, inlaid with cat's eye gems and pearls, resounding with the music of veena and drums. (13-109-59)
पताकादीपिकाकीर्णे दिव्यघण्टानिनादिते। स्त्रीसहस्रानुचरिते स नरः सुखमेधते ॥१३-१०९-६०॥
patākādīpikākīrṇe divyaghaṇṭānināditē। strīsahasrānucarite sa naraḥ sukhmēdhate ॥13-109-60॥
[पताकादीपिकाकीर्णे (patākādīpikākīrṇe) - adorned with banners and lamps; दिव्यघण्टानिनादिते (divyaghaṇṭānināditē) - resounding with divine bells; स्त्रीसहस्रानुचरिते (strīsahasrānucarite) - attended by thousands of women; स (sa) - that; नरः (naraḥ) - man; सुखमेधते (sukham edhate) - enjoys happiness;]
(In the place adorned with banners and lamps, resounding with divine bells, attended by thousands of women, that man enjoys happiness.)
That man attains happiness in a place adorned with banners and lamps, ringing with divine bells, and accompanied by thousands of women. (13-109-60)
यावन्ति रोमकूपाणि तस्य गात्रेषु पाण्डव। तावन्त्येव सहस्राणि वर्षाणां दिवि मोदते ॥१३-१०९-६१॥
yāvanti romakūpāṇi tasya gātreṣu pāṇḍava। tāvantyeva sahasrāṇi varṣāṇāṃ divi modate ॥13-109-61॥
[यावन्ति (yāvanti) - as many as; रोमकूपाणि (romakūpāṇi) - hair-pores; तस्य (tasya) - of him; गात्रेषु (gātreṣu) - on the limbs; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - O Pāṇḍava; तावन्त्येव (tāvantyeva) - just so many; सहस्राणि (sahasrāṇi) - thousands; वर्षाणाम् (varṣāṇām) - of years; दिवि (divi) - in heaven; मोदते (modate) - he rejoices;]
(As many hair-pores of him on the limbs, O Pāṇḍava, just so many thousands of years in heaven he rejoices.)
O Pāṇḍava, as many hair-pores as are on his body, for just so many thousands of years does he rejoice in heaven. (13-109-61)
नास्ति वेदात्परं शास्त्रं नास्ति मातृसमो गुरुः। न धर्मात्परमो लाभस्तपो नानशनात्परम् ॥१३-१०९-६२॥
nāsti vedāt-paraṃ śāstraṃ nāsti mātṛ-samo guruḥ। na dharmāt-paramo lābhas tapo nānaśanāt-paramam ॥13-109-62॥
[नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; वेदात् (vedāt) - than Veda; परं (paraṃ) - higher; शास्त्रं (śāstraṃ) - treatise; नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; मातृसमः (mātṛ-samaḥ) - equal to mother; गुरुः (guruḥ) - teacher; न (na) - not; धर्मात् (dharmāt) - than dharma; परमः (paramaḥ) - higher; लाभः (lābhaḥ) - gain; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; न (na) - not; आनशनात् (ānaśanāt) - than fasting; परम् (paramam) - higher;]
(There is not than Veda higher treatise, there is not equal to mother teacher. Not than dharma higher gain, austerity not than fasting higher.)
There is no scripture higher than the Veda, no teacher equal to the mother. There is no gain greater than dharma, and no austerity higher than fasting. (13-109-62)
ब्राह्मणेभ्यः परं नास्ति पावनं दिवि चेह च। उपवासैस्तथा तुल्यं तपःकर्म न विद्यते ॥१३-१०९-६३॥
brāhmaṇebhyaḥ paraṁ nāsti pāvanaṁ divi ceha ca। upavāsais tathā tulyaṁ tapaḥkarma na vidyate॥13-109-63॥
[ब्राह्मणेभ्यः (brāhmaṇebhyaḥ) - than the Brāhmaṇas; परं (paraṁ) - higher; नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; पावनं (pāvanaṁ) - a purifier; दिवि (divi) - in heaven; च (ca) - and; इह (iha) - here; च (ca) - and; उपवासैः (upavāsaiḥ) - by fasts; तथा (tathā) - likewise; तुल्यं (tulyaṁ) - equal; तपःकर्म (tapaḥkarma) - austerity-act; न (na) - not; विद्यते (vidyate) - there exists;]
(Than the Brāhmaṇas higher purifier is not, in heaven and here. Fasts likewise equal austerity-act not exists.)
There is no greater purifier than the Brāhmaṇas, either in heaven or on earth. Likewise, there exists no austerity or act of penance equal to fasting. (13-109-63)
उपोष्य विधिवद्देवास्त्रिदिवं प्रतिपेदिरे। ऋषयश्च परां सिद्धिमुपवासैरवाप्नुवन् ॥१३-१०९-६४॥
upoṣya vidhivad devās tridivaṃ pratipedire। ṛṣayaś ca parāṃ siddhim upavāsair avāpnuvan ॥13-109-64॥
[उपोष्य (upoṣya) - having fasted; having observed a fast; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - according to the proper method; duly; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; त्रिदिवम् (tridivam) - heaven; the threefold heaven; प्रतिपेदिरे (pratipedire) - they attained; they reached; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - the sages; च (ca) - and; पराम् (parām) - supreme; highest; सिद्धिम् (siddhim) - success; perfection; उपवासैः (upavāsaiḥ) - by fasts; by fasting; अवाप्नु‌वन् (avāpnuvan) - they obtained; they attained;]
(Having fasted duly, the gods attained heaven. And the sages obtained supreme success by fasts.)
Having properly observed fasts, the gods reached heaven, and the sages too attained the highest perfection through fasting. (13-109-64)
दिव्यं वर्षसहस्रं हि विश्वामित्रेण धीमता। क्षान्तमेकेन भक्तेन तेन विप्रत्वमागतः ॥१३-१०९-६५॥
divyaṃ varṣasahasraṃ hi viśvāmitreṇa dhīmatā। kṣāntam ekena bhaktena tena vipratvam āgataḥ॥13-109-65॥
[दिव्यं (divyaṃ) - divine; वर्षसहस्रं (varṣasahasraṃ) - thousand years; हि (hi) - indeed; विश्वामित्रेण (viśvāmitreṇa) - by Viśvāmitra; धीमता (dhīmatā) - by the intelligent (one); क्षान्तम् (kṣāntam) - endured; एकेन (ekena) - by one; भक्तेन (bhaktena) - by the devoted; तेन (tena) - by him; विप्रत्वम् (vipratvam) - Brāhmaṇa-hood; आगतः (āgataḥ) - has been attained;]
(Divine thousand years indeed by Viśvāmitra by the intelligent endured by one by the devoted by him Brāhmaṇa-hood has been attained.)
Indeed, Viśvāmitra, the intelligent one, endured a divine thousand years with single-minded devotion, and thus he attained Brāhmaṇa-hood. (13-109-65)
च्यवनो जमदग्निश्च वसिष्ठो गौतमो भृगुः। सर्व एव दिवं प्राप्ताः क्षमावन्तो महर्षयः ॥१३-१०९-६६॥
cyavano jamadagnīś ca vasiṣṭho gautamo bhṛguḥ। sarva eva divaṃ prāptāḥ kṣamāvanto maharṣayaḥ॥13-109-66॥
[च्यवनः (cyavanaḥ) - Cyavana; जमदग्निः (jamadagniḥ) - Jamadagni; च (ca) - and; वसिष्ठः (vasiṣṭhaḥ) - Vasiṣṭha; गौतमः (gautamaḥ) - Gautama; भृगुः (bhṛguḥ) - Bhṛgu; सर्वे (sarve) - all; एव (eva) - indeed; दिवं (divaṃ) - the heaven; प्राप्ताः (prāptāḥ) - have attained; क्षमावन्तः (kṣamāvantaḥ) - endowed with forbearance; महर्षयः (maharṣayaḥ) - great sages;]
(Cyavana, Jamadagni and Vasiṣṭha, Gautama, Bhṛgu; all indeed the heaven have attained, endowed with forbearance, great sages.)
Cyavana, Jamadagni, Vasiṣṭha, Gautama, and Bhṛgu—all these great sages endowed with forbearance have reached heaven. (13-109-66)
इदमङ्गिरसा पूर्वं महर्षिभ्यः प्रदर्शितम्। यः प्रदर्शयते नित्यं न स दुःखमवाप्नुते ॥१३-१०९-६७॥
idamaṅgirasā pūrvaṃ maharṣibhyaḥ pradarśitam। yaḥ pradarśayate nityaṃ na sa duḥkham avāpnute ॥13-109-67॥
[इदम् (idam) - this; अङ्गिरसा (aṅgirasā) - by Aṅgiras; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - formerly; महर्षिभ्यः (maharṣibhyaḥ) - unto the great sages; प्रदर्शितम् (pradarśitam) - was shown; यः (yaḥ) - who; प्रदर्शयते (pradarśayate) - shows; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; न (na) - not; सः (saḥ) - he; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - sorrow; अवाप्नुते (avāpnute) - obtains;]
(This was formerly shown by Aṅgiras to the great sages. Who always shows (this), he does not obtain sorrow.)
This was previously shown by Aṅgiras to the great sages. Whoever always demonstrates this will not encounter sorrow. (13-109-67)
इमं तु कौन्तेय यथाक्रमं विधिं; प्रवर्तितं ह्यङ्गिरसा महर्षिणा। पठेत यो वै शृणुयाच्च नित्यदा; न विद्यते तस्य नरस्य किल्बिषम् ॥१३-१०९-६८॥
imaṁ tu kaunteya yathākramam vidhiṁ; pravartitaṁ hyaṅgirasā maharṣiṇā। paṭheta yo vai śṛṇuyācca nityadā; na vidyate tasya narasya kilbiṣam ॥13-109-68॥
[इमं (imaṁ) - this; तु (tu) - but; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kuntī; यथाक्रमं (yathākramam) - according to the proper order; विधिं (vidhiṁ) - procedure; प्रवर्तितं (pravartitaṁ) - set forth; हि (hi) - indeed; अङ्गिरसा (aṅgirasā) - by Aṅgiras; महर्षिणा (maharṣiṇā) - by the great sage; पठेत (paṭheta) - should read; यः (yaḥ) - who; वै (vai) - indeed; शृणुयात् (śṛṇuyāt) - should hear; च (ca) - and; नित्यदा (nityadā) - always; न (na) - not; विद्यते (vidyate) - is found; तस्य (tasya) - of him; नरस्य (narasya) - of the person; किल्बिषम् (kilbiṣam) - sin;]
(This but, O son of Kuntī, according to the proper order, procedure, set forth indeed by Aṅgiras, the great sage—should read, who indeed, should hear and always—not is found, of him, of the person, sin.)
But, O son of Kuntī, whoever reads or always listens to this procedure, as set forth in due order by the great sage Aṅgiras, for that person there is no sin at all. (13-109-68)
विमुच्यते चापि स सर्वसङ्करै; र्न चास्य दोषैरभिभूयते मनः। वियोनिजानां च विजानते रुतं; ध्रुवां च कीर्तिं लभते नरोत्तमः ॥१३-१०९-६९॥
vimucyate cāpi sa sarvasaṅkaraiḥ; na cāsya doṣairabhibhūyate manaḥ. viyonijānāṃ ca vijānate rutaṃ; dhruvāṃ ca kīrtiṃ labhate narottamaḥ ॥13-109-69॥
[विमुच्यते (vimucyate) - is released; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; सः (saḥ) - he; सर्वसङ्करैः (sarvasaṅkaraiḥ) - from all confusions (mixtures); न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - his; दोषैः (doṣaiḥ) - by faults; अभिभूयते (abhibhūyate) - is overcome; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; वियोनिजानाम् (viyonijānām) - of those born in the sky; च (ca) - and; विजानते (vijānate) - understands; रुतम् (rutam) - cry; ध्रुवाम् (dhruvām) - steady; च (ca) - and; कीर्तिम् (kīrtim) - fame; लभते (labhate) - obtains; नरोत्तमः (narottamaḥ) - best among men;]
(He also is released from all confusions, and his mind is not overcome by faults. And he understands the cry of those born in the sky, and the best among men obtains steady fame.)
He is freed from all confusion, his mind is not overpowered by faults, he understands the sounds made by aerial beings, and the best among men attains unfailing fame. (13-109-69)
