साम्ना वापि प्रदाने वा ज्यायः किं भवतो मतम्। प्रब्रूहि भरतश्रेष्ठ यदत्र व्यतिरिच्यते ॥१३-१२५-१॥
sāmnā vāpi pradāne vā jyāyaḥ kiṃ bhavato matam। prabrūhi bharataśreṣṭha yadatra vyatiricyate ॥13-125-1॥
[साम्ना (sāmnā) - by conciliation; by gentle means; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - also; प्रदाने (pradāne) - by giving; by generosity; वा (vā) - or; ज्यायः (jyāyaḥ) - superior; greater; किं (kiṃ) - what; भवत: (bhavataḥ) - your; मतम् (matam) - opinion; view; प्रब्रूहि (prabrūhi) - tell; declare; भरतश्रेष्ठ (bharataśreṣṭha) - O best of the Bhāratas; यत् (yat) - which; अत्र (atra) - here; in this matter; व्यतिरिच्यते (vyatiricyate) - is superior; excels;]
(By conciliation or indeed by giving, which is greater? What is your opinion? Tell, O best of the Bhāratas, which here excels.)
O best of the Bhāratas, tell me—which do you think is superior here, conciliation or generosity—what is your view about which excels in this matter? (13-125-1)

साम्ना प्रसाद्यते कश्चिद्दानेन च तथापरः। पुरुषः प्रकृतिं ज्ञात्वा तयोरेकतरं भजेत् ॥१३-१२५-२॥
sāmnā prasādyate kaścid dānena ca tathā paraḥ. puruṣaḥ prakṛtiṃ jñātvā tayor ekataraṃ bhajet ॥13-125-2॥
[साम्ना (sāmnā) - by gentle speech;, प्रसाद्यते (prasādyate) - is appeased;, कश्चित् (kaścit) - someone;, दानेन (dānena) - by giving;, च (ca) - and;, तथा (tathā) - just so;, अपरः (aparaḥ) - another;, पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - a person;, प्रकृतिम् (prakṛtim) - nature;, ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - having known;, तयोः (tayoḥ) - of those two;, एकतरम् (ekataram) - either one;, भजेत् (bhajet) - should choose;]
(By gentle speech, someone is appeased; by giving, another likewise. A person, having known the nature, of those two, should choose either one.)
Some are appeased by gentle words, others by giving; knowing their nature, a person should choose either of these two ways. (13-125-2)
गुणांस्तु शृणु मे राजन्सान्त्वस्य भरतर्षभ। दारुणान्यपि भूतानि सान्त्वेनाराधयेद्यथा ॥१३-१२५-३॥
guṇāṃs tu śṛṇu me rājan sāntvasya bharatarṣabha। dāruṇāni api bhūtāni sāntvena ārādhayet yathā ॥13-125-3॥

But hear from me, O king and bull among the Bharatas, the qualities of conciliation; even harsh beings can be conciliated by conciliation, as follows. (13-125-3)
अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम्। गृहीत्वा रक्षसा मुक्तो द्विजातिः कानने यथा ॥१३-१२५-४॥
atrāpy udāharantīmam itihāsaṃ purātanam। gṛhītvā rakṣasā mukto dvijātiḥ kānane yathā ॥13-125-4॥

[कश्चित् (kaścit) - some; someone; तु (tu) - but; बुद्धिसम्पन्नः (buddhi-sampannaḥ) - endowed with intelligence; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - a Brāhmaṇa; विजने (vijane) - in a lonely (place); वने (vane) - in the forest; गृहीतः (gṛhītaḥ) - seized; कृच्छ्रम् (kṛcchram) - danger; आपन्नः (āpannaḥ) - having encountered; रक्षसा (rakṣasā) - by a Rākṣasa; भक्षयिष्यता (bhakṣayiṣyatā) - about to be devoured;]
(But some Brāhmaṇa endowed with intelligence, in a lonely forest, having been seized, having encountered danger by a Rākṣasa, about to be devoured.)
But a certain intelligent Brāhmaṇa, in a lonely forest, was seized by a Rākṣasa and, having encountered danger, was about to be devoured. (13-125-5)
स बुद्धिश्रुतसम्पन्नस्तं दृष्ट्वातीव भीषणम्। सामैवास्मिन्प्रयुयुजे न मुमोह न विव्यथे ॥१३-१२५-६॥
sa buddhi-śruta-sampannaḥ taṃ dṛṣṭvā atīva bhīṣaṇam। sāma eva asmin prayuyuje na mumoha na vivyathe ॥13-125-6॥
[स (sa) - he; बुद्धि-श्रुत-सम्पन्नः (buddhi-śruta-sampannaḥ) - endowed with intelligence and learning; तं (taṃ) - him; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; अतीव (atīva) - highly; भीषणम् (bhīṣaṇam) - frightful; साम्-एव (sām-eva) - conciliation indeed; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; प्रयुयुजे (prayuyuje) - employed; न (na) - not; मुमोह (mumoha) - was bewildered; न (na) - not; विव्यथे (vivyathe) - was disturbed;]
(He, endowed with intelligence and learning, having seen him—highly frightful—employed conciliation indeed in this, was not bewildered, not disturbed.)
He, endowed with intelligence and learning, upon seeing that utterly frightful being, employed conciliation in this situation and was neither bewildered nor disturbed. (13-125-6)
रक्षस्तु वाचा सम्पूज्य प्रश्नं पप्रच्छ तं द्विजम्। मोक्ष्यसे ब्रूहि मे प्रश्नं केनास्मि हरिणः कृशः ॥१३-१२५-७॥
rakṣas tu vācā sampūjya praśnaṃ papraccha taṃ dvijam। mokṣyase brūhi me praśnaṃ kenāsmi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ ॥13-125-7॥
[रक्षः (rakṣaḥ) - the demon; तु (tu) - but; वाचा (vācā) - with words; सम्पूज्य (sampūjya) - having honored; प्रश्नम् (praśnam) - question; पप्रच्छ (papraccha) - asked; तम् (tam) - him; द्विजम् (dvijam) - the Brāhmaṇa; मोक्ष्यसे (mokṣyase) - you will be released; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; मे (me) - to me; प्रश्नम् (praśnam) - question; केन (kena) - by what; अस्मि (asmi) - am I; हरिणः (hariṇaḥ) - a deer; कृशः (kṛśaḥ) - thin;]
(But the demon, with words having honored, asked him, the Brāhmaṇa, a question: "You shall be released. Tell me my question: by what am I a thin deer?" (13-125-7))
But the demon, after respectfully addressing the Brāhmaṇa, asked him this question: "You will be released. Answer my question: by what am I a thin deer?" (13-125-7)
मुहूर्तमथ सञ्चिन्त्य ब्राह्मणस्तस्य रक्षसः। आभिर्गाथाभिरव्यग्रः प्रश्नं प्रतिजगाद ह ॥१३-१२५-८॥
muhūrtam atha sañcintya brāhmaṇaḥ tasya rakṣasaḥ। ābhiḥ gāthābhiḥ avyagraḥ praśnam pratijagāda ha ॥13-125-8॥
[मुहूर्तम् (muhūrtam) - for a moment; अथ (atha) - then; सञ्चिन्त्य (sañcintya) - having considered; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - the brāhmaṇa; तस्य (tasya) - his; रक्षसः (rakṣasaḥ) - of the rakṣasa (demon); आभिः (ābhiḥ) - with these; गाथाभिः (gāthābhiḥ) - verses; अव्यग्रः (avyagraḥ) - unagitated; प्रश्नम् (praśnam) - the question; प्रतिजगाद (pratijagāda) - he replied; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(For a moment then, having considered, the brāhmaṇa of the rakṣasa, with these verses, unagitated, the question he replied indeed.)
Then, after considering for a moment, the brāhmaṇa calmly replied to the rakṣasa's question with these verses. (13-125-8)
विदेशस्थो विलोकस्थो विना नूनं सुहृज्जनैः। विषयानतुलान्भुङ्क्षे तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥१३-१२५-९॥
videśastho vilokastho vinā nūnaṃ suhṛjjanaiḥ। viṣayānatulānbhuṅkṣe tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ॥13-125-9॥
[विदेशस्थः (videśasthaḥ) - dwelling in a foreign land; विलोकस्थः (vilokasthaḥ) - situated in another world; विना (vinā) - without; नूनम् (nūnam) - surely; सुहृज्जनैः (suhṛjjanaiḥ) - by friends; विषयान् (viṣayān) - sense-objects; अतुलान् (atulān) - unrivaled; भुङ्क्षे (bhuṅkṣe) - you partake; तेन (tena) - therefore; असि (asi) - you are; हरिणः (hariṇaḥ) - a deer; कृशः (kṛśaḥ) - emaciated;]
(Dwelling in a foreign land, situated in another world, surely without friends, you partake in unrivaled sense-objects; therefore you are a deer, emaciated.)
You reside far from home, alone and without friends, and though you experience unmatched enjoyments, therefore you are as thin as a deer. (13-125-9)
नूनं मित्राणि ते रक्षः साधूपचरितान्यपि। स्वदोषादपरज्यन्ते तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥१३-१२५-१०॥
nūnaṁ mitrāṇi te rakṣaḥ sādhūpacaritāny api। svadoṣād aparajyante tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ॥13-125-10॥
[नूनं (nūnam) - certainly; मित्राणि (mitrāṇi) - friends; ते (te) - your; रक्षः (rakṣaḥ) - protectors; साधू उपचरितानि (sādhūpacaritāni) - well-treated; अपि (api) - even; स्वदोषात् (svadoṣāt) - by one's own fault; अप-रज्यन्ते (aparajyante) - are alienated; तेन (tena) - therefore; असि (asi) - you are; हरिणः (hariṇaḥ) - deer; कृशः (kṛśaḥ) - emaciated;]
(Certainly, friends your protectors, even well-treated, by one's own fault are alienated; therefore you are deer emaciated.)
Certainly, your friends and protectors, though well-treated, have become alienated from you because of your own fault; therefore you, O deer, are emaciated. (13-125-10)
धनैश्वर्याधिकाः स्तब्धास्त्वद्गुणैः परमावराः। अवजानन्ति नूनं त्वां तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥१३-१२५-११॥
dhanaishvaryādhikāḥ stabdhāstvadguṇaiḥ paramāvarāḥ। avajānanti nūnaṁ tvāṁ tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ ॥13-125-11॥
[धनैश्वर्याधिकाः (dhana-aiśvarya-adhikāḥ) - having excess in wealth and power; स्तब्धाः (stabdhāḥ) - arrogant; त्वद्गुणैः (tvad-guṇaiḥ) - by your qualities; परमावराः (paramāvarāḥ) - extremely low; अवजानन्ति (avajānanti) - despise; नूनं (nūnam) - indeed; त्वां (tvām) - you; तेन (tena) - by that; असि (asi) - are; हरिणः (hariṇaḥ) - of Hari; कृशः (kṛśaḥ) - emaciated;]
(Having excess in wealth and power, arrogant, by your qualities extremely low, despise indeed you; by that, are of Hari, emaciated.)
Those who are exceedingly wealthy and powerful become arrogant and, being extremely base through your qualities, they certainly despise you; and because of that you, O Hari, are emaciated. (13-125-11)
गुणवान्विगुणानन्यान्नूनं पश्यसि सत्कृतान्। प्राज्ञोऽप्राज्ञान्विनीतात्मा तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥१३-१२५-१२॥
guṇavān viguṇān anyān nūnaṃ paśyasi satkṛtān। prājñaḥ aprajñān vinītātmā tena asi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ॥13-125-12॥
[गुणवान् (guṇavān) - possessing qualities; विगुणान् (viguṇān) - those without qualities; अन्यान् (anyān) - others; नूनं (nūnaṃ) - certainly; पश्यसि (paśyasi) - you see; सत्कृतान् (satkṛtān) - those who are honored; प्राज्ञः (prājñaḥ) - a wise person; अप्राज्ञान् (aprajñān) - the unwise; विनीतात्मा (vinītātmā) - of humble mind; तेन (tena) - therefore; असि (asi) - you are; हरिणः (hariṇaḥ) - deer; कृशः (kṛśaḥ) - thin;]
(Possessing qualities, those without qualities, others, certainly, you see, who are honored. A wise person, the unwise, of humble mind, therefore, you are, deer, thin.)
Because you, O deer, possessing virtues, certainly see even those without virtues and others as worthy of honor—being wise, of humble mind—you are therefore thin. (13-125-12)
अवृत्त्या क्लिश्यमानोऽपि वृत्त्युपायान्विगर्हयन्। माहात्म्याद्व्यथसे नूनं तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥१३-१२५-१३॥
avṛttyā kliśyamāno'pi vṛttyupāyān vigarhayan। māhātmyād vyathase nūnaṃ tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ ॥13-125-13॥
[अवृत्त्या (avṛttyā) - due to lack of livelihood; क्लिश्यमानः (kliśyamānaḥ) - being tormented; अपि (api) - even; वृत्त्युपायान् (vṛttyupāyān) - means of sustenance; विगर्हयन् (vigarhayan) - criticizing; माहात्म्यात् (māhātmyāt) - out of greatness; व्यथसे (vyathase) - you suffer; नूनम् (nūnam) - certainly; तेन (tena) - because of that; असि (asi) - you are; हरिणः (hariṇaḥ) - O deer; कृशः (kṛśaḥ) - emaciated;]
(Even though tormented because of lack of livelihood, criticising means of sustenance, certainly you suffer out of greatness; because of that, O deer, you are emaciated.)
O deer, even though you are tormented by lack of livelihood, by criticising the means of sustenance and suffering out of your greatness, for this reason you have become emaciated. (13-125-13)
सम्पीड्यात्मानमार्यत्वात्त्वया कश्चिदुपस्कृतः। जितं त्वां मन्यते साधो तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥१३-१२५-१४॥
sampīḍyātmānam āryatvāt tvayā kaścid upaskṛtaḥ। jitaṃ tvāṃ manyate sādho tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ ॥13-125-14॥
[सम्पीड्य (sampīḍya) - having oppressed; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - oneself; आर्यत्वात् (āryatvāt) - due to nobility; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; कश्चित् (kaścit) - someone; उपस्कृतः (upaskṛtaḥ) - having been served; जितम् (jitam) - conquered; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; मन्यते (manyate) - thinks; साधो (sādho) - O good one; तेन (tena) - therefore; असि (asi) - you are; हरिणः (hariṇaḥ) - of a deer; कृशः (kṛśaḥ) - emaciated;]
(Having oppressed oneself due to nobility, by you someone having been served thinks you conquered, O good one; therefore, you are emaciated like a deer.)
O noble one, because you serve others and oppress yourself through your nobility, someone you have helped thinks he has conquered you; thus you have become as emaciated as a deer. (13-125-14)
क्लिश्यमानान्विमार्गेषु कामक्रोधावृतात्मनः। मन्ये नु ध्यायसि जनांस्तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥१३-१२५-१५॥
kliśyamānān vimārgeṣu kāmakrodhāvṛtātmanaḥ। manye nu dhyāyasi janāṃs tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ॥13-125-15॥
[क्लिश्यमानान् (kliśyamānān) - being afflicted; विमार्गेषु (vimārgeṣu) - in wrong paths; कामक्रोधावृतात्मनः (kāmakrodhāvṛtātmanaḥ) - whose minds are enveloped by desire and anger; मन्ये (manye) - I think; नु (nu) - indeed; ध्यायसि (dhyāyasi) - you meditate; जनान् (janān) - persons; तेन (tena) - by that; असि (asi) - you are; हरिणः (hariṇaḥ) - deer; कृशः (kṛśaḥ) - thin;]
(Being afflicted in wrong paths, whose minds are enveloped by desire and anger, I think indeed you meditate on persons; by that, you are a thin deer.)
Whose minds are afflicted by desire and anger and who follow wrong paths, I believe you keep thinking of such people; because of this you have become thin like a deer. (13-125-15)
प्राज्ञैः सम्भावितो नूनं नप्राज्ञैरुपसंहितः। ह्रीमानमर्षी दुर्वृत्तैस्तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥१३-१२५-१६॥
prājñaiḥ sambhāvito nūnaṁ naprājñairupasaṁhitaḥ। hrīmānamarṣī durvṛttaistenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ॥13-125-16॥
[प्राज्ञैः (prājñaiḥ) - by the wise; सम्भावितः (sambhāvitaḥ) - respected; नूनं (nūnam) - certainly; न (na) - not; अप्राज्ञैः (naprājñaiḥ) - by the unwise; उपसंहितः (upasaṁhitaḥ) - associated; ह्रीमान् (hrīmān) - possessing modesty; अमर्षी (amarṣī) - not bearing (tolerating); दुर्वृत्तैः (durvṛttaiḥ) - by the wicked; तेन (tena) - by that; असि (asi) - you are; हरिणः (hariṇaḥ) - deer; कृशः (kṛśaḥ) - emaciated;]
(By the wise respected certainly, not by the unwise associated; possessing modesty, intolerant, by the wicked by that you are deer emaciated.)
You are certainly respected by the wise, but not associated with the unwise; being modest and intolerant (of vice), therefore, you are a deer emaciated by the wicked. (13-125-16)
नूनं मित्रमुखः शत्रुः कश्चिदार्यवदाचरन्। वञ्चयित्वा गतस्त्वां वै तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥१३-१२५-१७॥
nūnaṁ mitramukhaḥ śatruḥ kaścid āryavad ācaran। vañcayitvā gatastvāṁ vai tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ ॥13-125-17॥
[नूनं (nūnam) - indeed; मित्रमुखः (mitramukhaḥ) - one with a friend's face; शत्रुः (śatruḥ) - enemy; कश्चित् (kaścit) - someone; आर्यवत् (āryavat) - like a noble one; आचरन् (ācaran) - acting; वञ्चयित्वा (vañcayitvā) - having deceived; गतः (gataḥ) - has gone; त्वां (tvām) - you; वै (vai) - indeed; तेन (tena) - by him; असि (asi) - you are; हरिणः (hariṇaḥ) - deer; कृशः (kṛśaḥ) - emaciated;]
(Indeed, someone whose face is as a friend, (but is) an enemy, acting like a noble one, having deceived (you), has gone; by him indeed you are (now) an emaciated deer.)
Indeed, some enemy with the face of a friend, behaving like a noble person, has deceived you and gone away; because of him, you have become an emaciated deer. (13-125-17)
प्रकाशार्थगतिर्नूनं रहस्यकुशलः कृती। तज्ज्ञैर्न पूज्यसे नूनं तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥१३-१२५-१८॥
prakāśārthagatir nūnaṃ rahasyakuśalaḥ kṛtī। tajjñair na pūjyase nūnaṃ tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ॥13-125-18॥
[प्रकाशार्थगतिः (prakāśārthagatiḥ) - one whose movement is towards obvious meaning; नूनम् (nūnam) - indeed; रहस्यकुशलः (rahasyakuśalaḥ) - skilled in secrets; कृती (kṛtī) - accomplished; तज्ज्ञैः (tajjñaiḥ) - by those who are experts in that; न (na) - not; पूज्यसे (pūjyase) - you are honored; नूनम् (nūnam) - indeed; तेन (tena) - therefore; असि (asi) - you are; हरिणः (hariṇaḥ) - of a deer; कृशः (kṛśaḥ) - emaciated;]
(One whose movement is towards obvious meaning, indeed, skilled in secrets, accomplished, by those who are experts in that not you are honored, indeed; therefore you are of a deer, emaciated.)
You are intent on obvious meanings, yet you are skilled and accomplished in secrets; the true experts do not honor you, therefore you remain thin like a deer. (13-125-18)
असत्स्वभिनिविष्टेषु ब्रुवतो मुक्तसंशयम्। गुणास्ते न विराजन्ते तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥१३-१२५-१९॥
asatsv abhiniviṣṭeṣu bruvato muktasaṃśayam। guṇās te na virājante tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ ॥13-125-19॥
[असत्सु (asatsu) - in the unworthy; अभिनिविष्टेषु (abhiniviṣṭeṣu) - absorbed; ब्रुवतः (bruvataḥ) - of one speaking; मुक्तसंशयम् (muktasaṃśayam) - free from doubt; गुणाः (guṇāḥ) - qualities; ते (te) - your; न (na) - not; विराजन्ते (virājante) - shine forth; तेन (tena) - therefore; असि (asi) - you are; हरिणः (hariṇaḥ) - among the deer; कृशः (kṛśaḥ) - emaciated;]
(Among the unworthy absorbed, of one speaking free from doubt, your qualities do not shine forth; therefore you are emaciated among the deer. (13-125-19))
Your qualities do not shine forth when you speak without doubt among those absorbed in the unworthy; therefore, among the deer, you are emaciated. (13-125-19)
धनबुद्धिश्रुतैर्हीनः केवलं तेजसान्वितः। महत्प्रार्थयसे नूनं तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥१३-१२५-२०॥
dhanabuddhiśrutair hīnaḥ kevalaṃ tejasānvitaḥ। mahat prārthayase nūnaṃ tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ॥13-125-20॥
[धनबुद्धिश्रुतैः (dhana-buddhi-śrutaiḥ) - by (means of) wealth, intellect, and learning; हीनः (hīnaḥ) - devoid; केवलं (kevalaṃ) - only; तेजसा (tejasā) - with energy; अन्वितः (anvitaḥ) - endowed; महत् (mahat) - great (thing); प्रार्थयसे (prārthayase) - you ask (for); नूनं (nūnaṃ) - certainly; तेन (tena) - therefore; असि (asi) - you are; हरिणः (hariṇaḥ) - of a deer; कृशः (kṛśaḥ) - thin;]
(Devoid of wealth, intellect, and learning, only endowed with energy, you ask for a great (thing), certainly; therefore you are thin like a deer.)
Lacking wealth, intellect, and learning but possessing only vigor, you aspire for something great; therefore, you are thin like a deer. (13-125-20)
तपःप्रणिहितात्मानं मन्ये त्वारण्यकाङ्क्षिणम्। बन्धुवर्गो न गृह्णाति तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥१३-१२५-२१॥
tapaḥ-praṇihitātmānaṃ manye tvāraṇyakāṅkṣiṇam। bandhuvargo na gṛhṇāti tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ ॥13-125-21॥
[तपःप्रणिहितात्मानं (tapaḥ-praṇihitātmānam) - asceticism-fixed-self; (whose self is devoted to tapas); मन्ये (manye) - I think; I consider; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अरण्यकाङ्क्षिणम् (araṇyakāṅkṣiṇam) - forest-desiring; (one who desires the forest); बन्धुवर्गः (bandhu-vargaḥ) - kin-group; (your group of relatives); न (na) - not; गृह्णाति (gṛhṇāti) - accepts; (takes, receives); तेन (tena) - by that; असि (asi) - you are; हरिणः (hariṇaḥ) - of the deer; (deer); कृशः (kṛśaḥ) - thin; (emaciated);]
(Asceticism-fixed-self I think you forest-desiring. Kin-group not accepts, by that you are deer thin.)
I think you, whose self is devoted to asceticism, desire the forest. Your kin do not accept you; therefore, you are thin like the deer. (13-125-21)
नूनमर्थवतां मध्ये तव वाक्यमनुत्तमम्। न भाति कालेऽभिहितं तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥१३-१२५-२२॥
nūnam arthavatām madhye tava vākyam anuttamam। na bhāti kāle'bhihitaṃ tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ ॥13-125-22॥
[नूनम् (nūnam) - indeed; अर्थवताम् (arthavatām) - of the meaningful ones; मध्ये (madhye) - among; तव (tava) - your; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; अनुत्तमम् (anuttamam) - unexcelled; न (na) - not; भाति (bhāti) - shine; कालेऽभिहितम् (kāle'bhihitam) - spoken at the (wrong) time; तेन (tena) - therefore; असि (asi) - you are; हरिणः (hariṇaḥ) - O deer; कृशः (kṛśaḥ) - emaciated;]
(Indeed, among the meaningful ones, your speech is unexcelled; not shine spoken at the (wrong) time; therefore you are, O deer, emaciated.)
Indeed, among worthy words, your speech is unsurpassed; but words spoken at the wrong time do not shine—therefore, O deer, you are thin. (13-125-22)
दृढपूर्वश्रुतं मूर्खं कुपितं हृदयप्रियम्। अनुनेतुं न शक्नोषि तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥१३-१२५-२३॥
dṛḍhapūrvaśrutaṃ mūrkhaṃ kupitaṃ hṛdayapriyam। anunetuṃ na śaknoṣi tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ ॥13-125-23॥
[दृढपूर्वश्रुतं (dṛḍha-pūrva-śrutam) - firmly previously-heard; मूर्खं (mūrkham) - foolish; कुपितं (kupitam) - angered; हृदयप्रियम् (hṛdaya-priyam) - dear to the heart; अनुनेतुं (anunetum) - to pacify; न (na) - not; शक्नोषि (śaknoṣi) - you are able; तेन (tena) - by that; असि (asi) - you are; हरिणः (hariṇaḥ) - of the deer; कृशः (kṛśaḥ) - thin;]
(Firmly previously-heard foolish angered and dear to the heart, to pacify not you are able; by that you are of the deer thin.)
Because you are unable to pacify the foolish and dearly loved one who is firmly fixed in prior views and has become angry, you are thin like a deer. (13-125-23)
नूनमासञ्जयित्वा ते कृत्ये कस्मिंश्चिदीप्सिते। कश्चिदर्थयतेऽत्यर्थं तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥१३-१२५-२४॥
nūnam āsañjayitvā te kṛtye kasmiṁścid īpsite। kaścid arthayate 'tyarthaṁ tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ ॥13-125-24॥
[नूनम् (nūnam) - certainly; आसञ्जयित्वा (āsañjayitvā) - having made attached; having caused to be bound; ते (te) - your; to you; कृत्ये (kṛtye) - action; in the deed; कस्मिंश्चित् (kasmiṁścit) - in some; to something; ईप्सिते (īpsite) - desired; wished; कश्चित् (kaścit) - someone; अर्थयते (arthayate) - requests; asks; अत्यर्थम् (atyartham) - excessively; greatly; तेन (tena) - by that; असि (asi) - you are; हरिणः (hariṇaḥ) - of the deer; like a deer; कृशः (kṛśaḥ) - emaciated; thin;]
(Certainly, having made you attached in some desired action, someone requests very much; by that, you are thin like a deer.)
Certainly, after binding you to some desired action, someone persistently requests, and because of that, you have become emaciated like a deer. (13-125-24)
नूनं त्वा स्वगुणापेक्षं पूजयानं सुहृद्ध्रुवम्। मयार्थ इति जानाति तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥१३-१२५-२५॥
nūnaṁ tvā svaguṇāpekṣaṁ pūjayānaṁ suhṛddhruvam। mayārtha iti jānāti tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ ॥13-125-25॥
[नूनं (nūnam) - certainly; त्वा (tvā) - you; स्वगुणापेक्षं (svaguṇāpekṣam) - regarding your virtues; पूजयानं (pūjayānam) - worthy of worship; सुहृद्ध्रुवम् (suhṛd-dhruvam) - certainly a friend; मयार्थ (mayārtha) - for my sake; इति (iti) - thus; जानाति (jānāti) - understands; तेन (tena) - for that reason; असि (asi) - you are; हरिणः (hariṇaḥ) - the deer; कृशः (kṛśaḥ) - thin;]
(Certainly, you, regarding your virtues, worthy of worship, certainly a friend, for my sake—thus he understands; for that reason, you are, the deer, thin.)
Certainly, the deer, recognizing you as a true friend, worthy of reverence due to your own virtues and devoted to my cause, has become thin for that reason. (13-125-25)
अन्तर्गतमभिप्रायं न नूनं लज्जयेच्छसि। विवक्तुं प्राप्तिशैथिल्यात्तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥१३-१२५-२६॥
antargatam abhiprāyaṁ na nūnaṁ lajjayecc hasi। vivaktuṁ prāptiśaithilyāt tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ॥13-125-26॥
[अन्तर्गतम् (antargatam) - entered within; internal; अभिप्रायम् (abhiprāyam) - intention; purpose; न (na) - not; नूनम् (nūnam) - surely; लज्जयेच्छसि (lajjayecc hasi) - you wish to be ashamed; विवक्तुम् (vivaktum) - to express; to state; प्राप्ति-शैथिल्यात् (prāpti-śaithilyāt) - from slackness of attainment; from weakness in obtaining; तेन (tena) - therefore; by that; असि (asi) - you are; हरिणः (hariṇaḥ) - deer; कृशः (kṛśaḥ) - thin; emaciated;]
(The internal intention surely you do not wish to be ashamed to express; from slackness in attainment, therefore, you are a thin deer.)
You surely are not ashamed to express your inner thoughts; due to weakness in attaining (your desires), therefore, you are as thin as a deer. (13-125-26)
नानाबुद्धिरुचीँल्लोके मनुष्यान्नूनमिच्छसि। ग्रहीतुं स्वगुणैः सर्वांस्तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥१३-१२५-२७॥
nānā-buddhi-rucīn loke manuṣyān nūnam icchasi। grahītuṃ svaguṇaiḥ sarvān tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ ॥13-125-27॥
[नानाबुद्धिरुचीन् (nānā-buddhi-rucīn) - (those who have) various understandings and inclinations; लोके (loke) - in the world; मनुष्यान् (manuṣyān) - men; नूनम् (nūnam) - surely; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you wish; ग्रहीतुं (grahītuṃ) - to win; स्वगुणैः (svaguṇaiḥ) - by your own qualities; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; तेन (tena) - therefore; असि (asi) - you are; हरिणः (hariṇaḥ) - deer; कृशः (kṛśaḥ) - thin;]
(In the world, you surely wish to win all men of various understandings and inclinations by your own qualities; therefore you are a thin deer.)
You wish to win over all people of different minds and tastes in this world by your own good qualities; therefore you have become a thin (frail) deer. (13-125-27)
अविद्वान्भीरुरल्पार्थो विद्याविक्रमदानजम्। यशः प्रार्थयसे नूनं तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥१३-१२५-२८॥
avidvān bhīruḥ alpa-artho vidyā-vikrama-dāna-jam। yaśaḥ prārthayase nūnam tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ॥13-125-28॥
[अविद्वान् (avidvān) - ignorant; भीरुः (bhīruḥ) - fearful; अल्पार्थः (alpa-arthaḥ) - of little wealth; विद्याविक्रमदानजम् (vidyā-vikrama-dāna-jam) - arising from learning, valour and generosity; यशः (yaśaḥ) - fame; प्रार्थयसे (prārthayase) - you seek; नूनम् (nūnam) - indeed; तेन (tena) - therefore; असि (asi) - you are; हरिणः (hariṇaḥ) - deer; कृशः (kṛśaḥ) - emaciated;]
(Ignorant, fearful, of little wealth, fame arising from learning, valour and generosity you seek indeed; therefore you are an emaciated deer.)
Being ignorant, timid, and of little means, you seek fame that comes from learning, valor, and generosity; therefore, you are like an emaciated deer. (13-125-28)
चिराभिलषितं किञ्चित्फलमप्राप्तमेव ते। कृतमन्यैरपहृतं तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥१३-१२५-२९॥
cirābhilaṣitaṃ kiñcit phalam aprāptam eva te। kṛtam anyair apahṛtaṃ tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ॥13-125-29॥
[चिराभिलषितं (cirābhilaṣitam) - long-desired; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - some; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; अप्राप्तम् (aprāptam) - not obtained; एव (eva) - certainly; ते (te) - of you; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; अन्यैः (anyaiḥ) - by others; अपहृतं (apahṛtam) - taken away; तेन (tena) - by that; असि (asi) - you are; हरिणः (hariṇaḥ) - O deer; कृशः (kṛśaḥ) - emaciated;]
(Long-desired some fruit not obtained indeed for you, done by others taken away, by that you are, O deer, emaciated.)
Some long-desired fruit you have not obtained, has been taken away by others after your labor; therefore, O deer, you have become emaciated. (13-125-29)
नूनमात्मकृतं दोषमपश्यन्किञ्चिदात्मनि। अकारणेऽभिशस्तोऽसि तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥१३-१२५-३०॥
nūnamātmakṛtaṃ doṣam apaśyan kiñcid ātmani। akāraṇe'bhishasto'si tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ ॥13-125-30॥
[नूनम् (nūnam) - certainly; आत्मकृतम् (ātmakṛtam) - done by oneself; दोषम् (doṣam) - fault; अपश्यन् (apaśyan) - not seeing; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - any; आत्मनि (ātmani) - in oneself; अकारणेऽभिशस्तःऽअसि (akāraṇe'bhiśastaḥ'si) - accused without cause; you are; तेन (tena) - therefore; असि (asi) - you are; हरिणः (hariṇaḥ) - deer; कृशः (kṛśaḥ) - thin;]
(Certainly not seeing any fault done by oneself in oneself, accused without cause you are; therefore you are a thin deer.)
Surely, without seeing any fault done by yourself in yourself, you have been accused without reason; therefore, you are a thin deer. (13-125-30)
सुहृदामप्रमत्तानामप्रमोक्ष्यार्थहानिजम्। दुःखमर्थगुणैर्हीनं तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥१३-१२५-३१॥
suhṛdāmapramattānāmapramokṣyārthahānijam। duḥkhamarthaguṇairhīnaṃ tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ ॥13-125-31॥
[सुहृदाम् (suhṛdām) - of friends; अप्रमत्तानाम् (apramattānām) - of the vigilant; अप्रमोक्ष्यार्थ (apramokṣya-artha) - for the purpose of non-release; हानिजम् (hānijam) - produced from loss; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - sorrow; अर्थगुणैः (arthaguṇaiḥ) - by the qualities of wealth; हीनम् (hīnam) - deprived; तेन (tena) - by that; असि (asi) - you are; हरिणः (hariṇaḥ) - O deer; कृशः (kṛśaḥ) - thin;]
(Of friends, of the vigilant, for the purpose of non-release, produced from loss, sorrow deprived of the qualities of wealth, by that, you are, O deer, thin.)
O deer, you have become thin due to sorrow, which arises from loss, deprived of the qualities of wealth, for the purpose of not abandoning vigilant friends. (13-125-31)
साधून्गृहस्थान्दृष्ट्वा च तथासाधून्वनेचरान्। मुक्तांश्चावसथे सक्तांस्तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥१३-१२५-३२॥
sādhūn-gṛhasthān-dṛṣṭvā ca tathā-asādhūn-vana-carān। muktāṁś-ca avasathe saktān tena asi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ ॥13-125-32॥
[साधून् (sādhūn) - good people; righteous ones; गृहस्थान् (gṛhasthān) - householders; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - in the same way; असाधून् (asādhūn) - wicked ones; वनेचरान् (vana-carān) - forest-dwellers; मुक्तान् (muktān) - liberated ones; च (ca) - and; अवसथे (avasathe) - in the abode; सक्तान् (saktān) - attached (ones); तेन (tena) - by that; असि (asi) - are (you); हरिणः (hariṇaḥ) - O deer; कृशः (kṛśaḥ) - emaciated;]
(Having seen householders who are good and likewise wicked forest-dwellers, and those who are liberated, and those attached in the abode, by that you are emaciated, O deer.)
By seeing the good householders, the wicked forest dwellers, the liberated, and those attached to their abode, you have become emaciated, O deer. (13-125-32)
धर्म्यमर्थं च काले च देशे चाभिहितं वचः। न प्रतिष्ठति ते नूनं तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥१३-१२५-३३॥
dharmyamar'thaṃ ca kāle ca deśe cābhihitaṃ vacaḥ। na pratiṣṭhati te nūnaṃ tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ॥13-125-33॥
[धर्म्यम् (dharmyām) - righteous; अर्थं (arthaṃ) - meaning; च (ca) - and; काले (kāle) - in (due) time; च (ca) - and; देशे (deśe) - in the place; च (ca) - and; अभिहितं (abhihitaṃ) - uttered; वचः (vacaḥ) - word; न (na) - not; प्रतिष्ठति (pratiṣṭhati) - remains; abides; ते (te) - for you; नूनं (nūnam) - surely; तेन (tena) - because of that; असि (asi) - you are; हरिणः (hariṇaḥ) - deer; कृशः (kṛśaḥ) - emaciated;]
(Righteous meaning and in time and in place uttered word does not remain for you surely; because of that you are deer emaciated.)
The word, conveying a righteous meaning, spoken at the proper time and place, surely does not abide with you; because of that you are an emaciated deer. (13-125-33)
दत्तानकुशलैरर्थान्मनीषी सञ्जिजीविषुः। प्राप्य वर्तयसे नूनं तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥१३-१२५-३४॥
dattānakushalair arthān manīṣī sañjijīviṣuḥ। prāpya vartayase nūnaṃ tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ॥13-125-34॥
[दत्तानकुशलैः (dattāna-kuśalaiḥ) - with those skilled in giving; अर्थान् (arthān) - objects (of wealth); मनीषी (manīṣī) - wise (person); सञ्जिजीविषुः (sañjijīvṣuḥ) - desiring to keep alive; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; वर्तयसे (vartayase) - you maintain (yourself); नूनम् (nūnam) - indeed; तेन (tena) - by that; असि (asi) - you are; हरिणः (hariṇaḥ) - deer; कृशः (kṛśaḥ) - emaciated;]
(With those skilled in giving, objects (of wealth), the wise (person), desiring to remain alive, having obtained, you maintain (yourself), indeed; by that (means), you are, deer, thin.)
Being a wise one wishing to preserve your life, you seek means from those skilled in giving wealth; thus, indeed, you subsist, and because of that you are an emaciated deer. (13-125-34)
पापान्विवर्धतो दृष्ट्वा कल्याणांश्चावसीदतः। ध्रुवं मृगयसे योग्यं तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥१३-१२५-३५॥
pāpān vivardhato dṛṣṭvā kalyāṇāṁś ca avasīdataḥ। dhruvaṁ mṛgayase yogyaṁ tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ॥13-125-35॥
[पापान् (pāpān) - sins; विवर्धतः (vivardhataḥ) - increasing; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; कल्याणान् (kalyāṇān) - auspicious ones; च (ca) - and; अवसीदतः (avasīdataḥ) - declining; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - certainly; मृगयसे (mṛgayase) - you seek; योग्यम् (yogyam) - proper; तेन (tena) - by that; असि (asi) - you are; हरिणः (hariṇaḥ) - deer; कृशः (kṛśaḥ) - emaciated;]
(Having seen sins increasing and auspicious ones declining, certainly you seek what is proper. By that, you are an emaciated deer.)
Seeing the increase of sins and the decline of auspiciousness, you certainly seek what is proper; therefore, you are like a thin deer. (13-125-35)
परस्परविरुद्धानां प्रियं नूनं चिकीर्षसि। सुहृदामविरोधेन तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥१३-१२५-३६॥
parasparaviruddhānāṃ priyaṃ nūnaṃ cikīrṣasi। suhṛdām-avirodhena tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ॥13-125-36॥
[परस्परविरुद्धानां (parasparaviruddhānām) - of those mutually opposed; प्रियं (priyaṃ) - pleasing; नूनं (nūnam) - certainly; चिकीर्षसि (cikīrṣasi) - you wish to do; सुहृदाम् (suhṛdām) - of friends; अविरोधेन (avirodhena) - without opposition; तेन (tena) - therefore; असि (asi) - you are; हरिणः (hariṇaḥ) - deer; कृशः (kṛśaḥ) - emaciated;]
(Of those mutually opposed, the pleasing you certainly wish to do; by the non-opposition of friends, therefore you are an emaciated deer.)
You certainly wish to please those who are mutually opposed; therefore, because you do not oppose your friends, you have become like an emaciated deer. (13-125-36)
श्रोत्रियांश्च विकर्मस्थान्प्राज्ञांश्चाप्यजितेन्द्रियान्। मन्येऽनुध्यायसि जनांस्तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥१३-१२५-३७॥
śrotriyāṁś ca vikarmasthān prājñāṁś cāpy ajitendriyān। manye'nudhyāyasi janāṁs tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ ॥13-125-37॥
[श्रोत्रियान् (śrotriyān) - those learned in the Vedas; च (ca) - and; विकर्मस्थान् (vikarmasthān) - those engaged in improper actions; प्राज्ञान् (prājñān) - wise men; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अजितेन्द्रियान् (ajitendriyān) - those whose senses are not conquered; मन्ये (manye) - I think; अनुध्यायसि (anudhyāyasi) - you continually contemplate; जनान् (janān) - people; तेन (tena) - therefore; असि (asi) - you are; हरिणः (hariṇaḥ) - like a deer; कृशः (kṛśaḥ) - emaciated;]
(Those learned in the Vedas and those engaged in improper actions, wise men and also those whose senses are not conquered, I think—you continually contemplate people; therefore you are like a deer, emaciated.)
You constantly think about people—both learned in the Vedas and engaged in wrong deeds, wise men as well as those whose senses are uncontrolled; therefore, I think, you have become emaciated like a deer. (13-125-37)
एवं सम्पूजितं रक्षो विप्रं तं प्रत्यपूजयत्। सखायमकरोच्चैनं संयोज्यार्थैर्मुमोच ह ॥१३-१२५-३८॥
evaṃ sampūjitaṃ rakṣo vipraṃ taṃ pratyapūjayat. sakhāyamakaroccainaṃ saṃyojyārthairmumoca ha ॥13-125-38॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; सम्पूजितं (sampūjitam) - having been honoured; रक्षः (rakṣaḥ) - the demon; विप्रं (vipram) - the Brāhmaṇa; तं (tam) - him; प्रत्यपूजयत् (pratyapūjayat) - returned the honours; सखायम् (sakhāyam) - as a friend; अकारोत् (akarot) - made; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - him; संयोज्यार्थैः (saṃyojyārthaiḥ) - for the purpose of uniting (the two); मुमोच (mumoca) - set free; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Thus, having been honoured, the demon returned the honours to that Brāhmaṇa. As a friend, he made him and, for the purpose of union, indeed set him free.)
Thus, the demon, having been duly honoured, returned the honours to the Brāhmaṇa. He befriended him and then set him free for the purpose of their union. (13-125-38)
