पितामह महाप्राज्ञ सर्वशास्त्रविशारद। आगमैर्बहुभिः स्फीतो भवान्नः प्रथितः कुले ॥१३-१२६-१॥
pitāmaha mahāprājña sarvaśāstraviśārada। āgamaīr bahubhiḥ sphīto bhavān naḥ prathitaḥ kule ॥13-126-1॥

त्वत्तो धर्मार्थसंयुक्तमायत्यां च सुखोदयम्। आश्चर्यभूतं लोकस्य श्रोतुमिच्छाम्यरिंदम ॥१३-१२६-२॥
tvatto dharmārthasaṁyuktam āyatyāṁ ca sukhodayam। āścaryabhūtaṁ lokasya śrotum icchāmi ariṁdama ॥13-126-2॥

O subduer of foes, I desire to hear from you about the wondrous emergence of happiness in the world in future, joined with dharma and artha. (13-126-2)
अयं च कालः सम्प्राप्तो दुर्लभज्ञातिबान्धवः। शास्ता च न हि नः कश्चित्त्वामृते भरतर्षभ ॥१३-१२६-३॥
ayaṃ ca kālaḥ samprāpto durlabhajñātibāndhavaḥ। śāstā ca na hi naḥ kaścit tvām ṛte bharatarṣabha॥13-126-3॥
[अयं (ayaṃ) - this; च (ca) - and; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; सम्प्राप्तः (samprāptaḥ) - arrived; दुर्लभज्ञातिबान्धवः (durlabha-jñāti-bāndhavaḥ) - rare (is the) relation or friend; शास्ता (śāstā) - ruler; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; नः (naḥ) - for us; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; त्वाम् (tvām) - except you; ऋते (ṛte) - apart from; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas;]
(This and time has arrived, rare is relation or friend; and ruler indeed not for us anyone except you, O bull among the Bharatas.)
And now the time has come, rarely is a relation or friend to be found; and indeed, for us there is none to rule except you, O bull among the Bharatas. (13-126-3)
यदि तेऽहमनुग्राह्यो भ्रातृभिः सहितोऽनघ। वक्तुमर्हसि नः प्रश्नं यत्त्वां पृच्छामि पार्थिव ॥१३-१२६-४॥
yadi te'hamanugrāhyo bhrātṛbhiḥ sahito'nagha। vaktumarhasi naḥ praśnaṃ yattvāṃ pṛcchāmi pārthiva ॥13-126-4॥
[यदि (yadi) (yadi) - if; ते (te) (te) - to you; अहमनुग्राह्यः (aham anugrāhyaḥ) (aham anugrāhyaḥ) - I deserving of favor; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with brothers; सहितः (sahitaḥ) (sahitaḥ) - accompanied; अनघ (anagha) (anagha) - O sinless one; वक्तुम् (vaktum) (vaktum) - to speak; अर्हसि (arhasi) (arhasi) - you are worthy; नः (naḥ) (naḥ) - to us; प्रश्नं (praśnam) (praśnam) - question; यत् (yat) (yat) - which; त्वाम् (tvām) (tvām) - you; पृच्छामि (pṛcchāmi) (pṛcchāmi) - I ask; पार्थिव (pārthiva) (pārthiva) - O king;]
(If to you I, together with the brothers, am deserving of favor, O sinless one, you are worthy to speak to us the question which I ask you, O king.)
If I, along with my brothers, am worthy of your favor, O sinless one, then you should answer the question I ask you, O king. (13-126-4)
अयं नारायणः श्रीमान्सर्वपार्थिवसंमतः। भवन्तं बहुमानेन प्रश्रयेण च सेवते ॥१३-१२६-५॥
ayaṃ nārāyaṇaḥ śrīmān sarvapārthivasaṃmataḥ। bhavantaṃ bahumānena praśrayeṇa ca sevate ॥13-126-5॥
[अयम् (ayam) - this; नारायणः (nārāyaṇaḥ) - Nārāyaṇa; श्रीमान् (śrīmān) - prosperous; सर्वपार्थिवसंमतः (sarvapārthivasaṃmataḥ) - approved-by-all-kings; भवन्तम् (bhavantam) - you (honorific); बहुमानेन (bahumānena) - with great respect; प्रश्रयेण (praśrayeṇa) - with humility; च (ca) - and; सेवते (sevate) - serves;]
(This Nārāyaṇa, prosperous, approved by all kings, serves you with great respect and humility.)
This Nārāyaṇa, possessed of prosperity and esteemed by all kings, serves you with great respect and humility. (13-126-5)
अस्य चैव समक्षं त्वं पार्थिवानां च सर्वशः। भ्रातॄणां च प्रियार्थं मे स्नेहाद्भाषितुमर्हसि ॥१३-१२६-६॥
asya caiva samakṣaṃ tvaṃ pārthivānāṃ ca sarvaśaḥ। bhrātṝṇāṃ ca priyārthaṃ me snehādbhāṣitumarhasi॥13-126-6॥

(Of this and indeed in the presence you, of princes and entirely, of brothers and, for the sake of affection for me, from affection to speak you ought.)
And here, in the presence of these princes and all the brothers, you ought to speak to me kindly out of affection. (13-126-6)

tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā snehādāgatasambhramaḥ। bhīṣmo bhāgīrathīputra idaṃ vacanamabravīt ॥13-126-7॥

(Of him those words having heard, from affection filled with sudden agitation, Bhīṣma, son of Bhāgīrathī, this speech spoke.)
Having heard those words of his, Bhīṣma, the son of Bhāgīrathī, filled with affectionate agitation, spoke these words. (13-126-7)
हन्त ते कथयिष्यामि कथामतिमनोरमाम्। अस्य विष्णोः पुरा राजन्प्रभावोऽयं मया श्रुतः ॥१३-१२६-८॥
hanta te kathayiṣyāmi kathām ati-manoramām। asya viṣṇoḥ purā rājan prabhāvaḥ ayaṃ mayā śrutaḥ ॥13-126-8॥
[हन्त (hanta) - indeed; ते (te) - to you; कथयिष्यामि (kathayiṣyāmi) - I shall tell; कथाम् (kathām) - story; अति-मनोरमाम् (ati-manoramām) - very delightful; अस्य (asya) - of this; विष्णोः (viṣṇoḥ) - of Viṣṇu; पुरा (purā) - formerly; राजन् (rājan) - O king; प्रभावः (prabhāvaḥ) - power; अयम् (ayam) - this; मया (mayā) - by me; श्रुतः (śrutaḥ) - heard;]
(Indeed, to you I shall tell a story very delightful. Of this Viṣṇu, formerly, O king, this power by me has been heard.)
Indeed, I shall tell you a very delightful story. O king, I have formerly heard of this power of Viṣṇu. (13-126-8)
यश्च गोवृषभाङ्कस्य प्रभावस्तं च मे शृणु। रुद्राण्याः संशयो यश्च दम्पत्योस्तं च मे शृणु ॥१३-१२६-९॥
yaś ca govṛṣabhāṅkasya prabhāvas taṃ ca me śṛṇu। rudrāṇyāḥ saṃśayo yaś ca dampatyos taṃ ca me śṛṇu॥13-126-9॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; च (ca) - and; गोवृषभाङ्कस्य (govṛṣabhāṅkasya) - of the one who has the bull as his emblem (Śiva); प्रभावः (prabhāvaḥ) - power; तं (taṃ) - that; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - to me; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; रुद्राण्याः (rudrāṇyāḥ) - of Rudrāṇī (Pārvatī); संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt; यः (yaḥ) - which; च (ca) - and; दम्पत्योः (dampatyoh) - of the couple; तं (taṃ) - that; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - to me; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear;]
(And who is the power of the bull-bannered one, that and to me hear; of Rudrāṇī the doubt which and of the couple, that and to me hear.)
Also, the power of the one who bears the bull emblem, listen to that from me; and the doubt concerning Rudrāṇī, and about the divine couple, that too you hear from me. (13-126-9)
व्रतं चचार धर्मात्मा कृष्णो द्वादशवार्षिकम्। दीक्षितं चागतौ द्रष्टुमुभौ नारदपर्वतौ ॥१३-१२६-१०॥
vrataṃ cacāra dharmātmā kṛṣṇo dvādaśavārṣikam। dīkṣitaṃ cāgatau draṣṭumubhau nāradaparvatau ॥13-126-10॥
[व्रतं (vrataṃ) - vow; चचार (cacāra) - undertook; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous-souled; कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - Kṛṣṇa; द्वादशवार्षिकम् (dvādaśavārṣikam) - of twelve years; दीक्षितं (dīkṣitam) - the initiated one; च (ca) - and; आगतौ (āgatau) - came; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; उभौ (ubhau) - both; नारदपर्वतौ (nāradaparvatau) - Nārada and Parvata;]
(The righteous-souled Kṛṣṇa undertook a vow of twelve years. Nārada and Parvata, both the initiated ones, came to see.)
The righteous-souled Kṛṣṇa observed a twelve-year vow. Both Nārada and Parvata, having been initiated, came to see him. (13-126-10)
कृष्णद्वैपायनश्चैव धौम्यश्च जपतां वरः। देवलः काश्यपश्चैव हस्तिकाश्यप एव च ॥१३-१२६-११॥
kṛṣṇadvaipāyanaścaiva dhaumyaśca japatāṃ varaḥ। devalaḥ kāśyapaścaiva hastikāśyapa eva ca ॥13-126-11॥

(Kṛṣṇadvaipāyana and indeed Dhaumya and the best of those who recite (japa), Devala, Kāśyapa and indeed Hastikāśyapa indeed and.)
Kṛṣṇadvaipāyana, as well as Dhaumya, the foremost among those who perform japa, Devala, Kāśyapa, and also Hastikāśyapa. (13-126-11)
अपरे ऋषयः सन्तो दीक्षादमसमन्विताः। शिष्यैरनुगताः सर्वे देवकल्पैस्तपोधनैः ॥१३-१२६-१२॥
apare ṛṣayaḥ santo dīkṣādamasamanvitāḥ। śiṣyairanugatāḥ sarve devakalpais tapodhanaiḥ॥13-126-12॥
[अपरे (apare) - others; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; सन्तः (santaḥ) - being; दीक्षा (dīkṣā) - initiation; दमस (damasa) - self-restraint; समन्विताः (samanvitāḥ) - endowed with; शिष्यैः (śiṣyaiḥ) - by disciples; अनुगताः (anugatāḥ) - followed; सर्वे (sarve) - all; देवकल्पैः (devakalpaiḥ) - godlike; तपोधनैः (tapodhanaiḥ) - rich in austerity;]
(Others, the sages being endowed with initiation and self-restraint, all followed by disciples who were godlike and rich in austerity.)

तेषामतिथिसत्कारमर्चनीयं कुलोचितम्। देवकीतनयः प्रीतो देवकल्पमकल्पयत् ॥१३-१२६-१३॥
teṣām atithi-satkāram arcanīyaṃ kulo-citam। devakī-tanayaḥ prīto deva-kalpam akalpayat॥13-126-13॥

(Of them, guest-honoring worthy of worship proper for the family, the son of Devakī, pleased, like a god, arranged.)
The son of Devakī, being pleased, arranged for guest-honoring worthy of worship, suitable for the family, in a manner like a god. (13-126-13)
हरितेषु सुवर्णेषु बर्हिष्केषु नवेषु च। उपोपविविशुः प्रीता विष्टरेषु महर्षयः ॥१३-१२६-१४॥
hariteṣu suvarṇeṣu barhiṣkeṣu naveṣu ca। upopaviviśuḥ prītā viṣṭareṣu maharṣayaḥ ॥13-126-14॥
[हरितेषु (hariteṣu) - on green; सुवर्णेषु (suvarṇeṣu) - on golden; बर्हिष्केषु (barhiṣkeṣu) - on seats of darbha grass; नवेषु (naveṣu) - on new (fresh); च (ca) - and; उपोपविविशुः (upopaviviśuḥ) - sat near; प्रीता (prītā) - pleased; विष्ठरेषु (viṣṭareṣu) - on seats; महर्षयः (maharṣayaḥ) - great sages;]
(On green, on golden, on seats of darbha grass, on new (fresh), and, sat near, pleased, on seats, great sages.)
The great sages, pleased, sat down nearby on seats that were green, golden, made of darbha grass, and new. (13-126-14)
कथाश्चक्रुस्ततस्ते तु मधुरा धर्मसंहिताः। राजर्षीणां सुराणां च ये वसन्ति तपोधनाः ॥१३-१२६-१५॥
kathāś cakrus tatas te tu madhurā dharmasaṁhitāḥ। rājarṣīṇāṁ surāṇāṁ ca ye vasanti tapodhanāḥ॥13-126-15॥
[कथाः (kathāḥ) - stories; चक्रुः (cakruḥ) - they made; ततः (tatas) - then; ते (te) - they; तु (tu) - but; मधुरा (madhurā) - sweet; धर्म-संहिताः (dharma-saṁhitāḥ) - full of dharma; राजर्षीणाम् (rājarṣīṇām) - of royal sages; सुराणाम् (surāṇām) - of gods; च (ca) - and; ये (ye) - who; वसन्ति (vasanti) - dwell; तपोधनाः (tapodhanāḥ) - ascetics rich in austerities;]
(Stories they made then they but sweet full of dharma; of royal sages, of gods, and who dwell ascetics rich in austerities.)
Then those ascetics rich in austerities, who dwell among the royal sages and gods, composed sweet stories full of dharma. (13-126-15)
ततो नारायणं तेजो व्रतचर्येन्धनोत्थितम्। वक्त्रान्निःसृत्य कृष्णस्य वह्निरद्भुतकर्मणः ॥१३-१२६-१६॥
tato nārāyaṇaṃ tejo vratacaryendhanotthitam। vaktrānniḥsṛtya kṛṣṇasya vahniradbhutakarmaṇaḥ ॥13-126-16॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; नारायणं (nārāyaṇam) - Nārāyaṇa; तेजः (tejaḥ) - radiance; व्रतचर्येन्धनोत्थितम् (vratacaryendhanotthitam) - arisen from the fuel of observance of vows; वक्त्रात् (vaktrāt) - from (his) mouth; निःसृत्य (niḥsṛtya) - emerging; कृष्णस्य (kṛṣṇasya) - of Kṛṣṇa; वह्निः (vahniḥ) - fire; अद्भुतकर्मणः (adbhutakarmaṇaḥ) - of marvelous deeds;]
(Then Nārāyaṇa’s radiance, arisen from the fuel of observance of vows, emerging from the mouth of Kṛṣṇa, the fire of marvelous deeds.)
Then the radiance of Nārāyaṇa, born of the fuel of vowful observance, as fire of marvelous deeds, emerged from the mouth of Kṛṣṇa. (13-126-16)
सोऽग्निर्ददाह तं शैलं सद्रुमं सलताक्षुपम्। सपक्षिमृगसङ्घातं सश्वापदसरीसृपम् ॥१३-१२६-१७॥
so'gnirdadāha taṃ śailaṃ sadrumṃ salatākṣupam। sapakṣimṛgasaṅghātaṃ saśvāpadasarīsṛpam॥13-126-17॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; ददाह (dadāha) - burned; तं (taṃ) - that; शैलं (śailam) - mountain; स-द्रुमं (sa-drumam) - with trees; स-लता-अक्षुपम् (sa-latā-akṣupam) - with creepers and shrubs; स-पक्षि-मृग-सङ्घातं (sa-pakṣi-mṛga-saṅghātam) - with flocks of birds and groups of animals; स-श्वापद-सरीसृपम् (sa-śvāpada-sarīsṛpam) - with beasts of prey and reptiles;]
(He fire burned that mountain with trees, with creepers and shrubs, with flocks of birds and groups of animals, with beasts of prey and reptiles.)
That fire burned the mountain along with the trees, creepers, shrubs, flocks of birds, groups of animals, beasts of prey, and reptiles. (13-126-17)
मृगैश्च विविधाकारैर्हाहाभूतमचेतनम्। शिखरं तस्य शैलस्य मथितं दीप्तदर्शनम् ॥१३-१२६-१८॥
mṛgaiś ca vividhākāraiḥ hāhābhūtam acetanam। śikharaṃ tasya śailasya mathitaṃ dīptadarśanam ॥13-126-18॥
[मृगैः (mṛgaiḥ) - by deer; च (ca) - and; विविधाकारैः (vividhākāraiḥ) - with various forms; हाहाभूतम् (hāhābhūtam) - become filled with cries of alarm; अचेतनम् (acetanam) - insentient; शिखरम् (śikharam) - the summit; तस्य (tasya) - of that; शैलस्य (śailasya) - of the mountain; मथितम् (mathitam) - churned; दीप्तदर्शनम् (dīptadarśanam) - having a shining appearance;]
(By deer and by those of various forms, the insentient summit of that mountain, having become filled with cries of alarm, churned, having a shining appearance.)
The insentient summit of that mountain, churned by deer and various creatures and filled with cries of alarm, shone brilliantly. (13-126-18)
स तु वह्निर्महाज्वालो दग्ध्वा सर्वमशेषतः। विष्णोः समीपमागम्य पादौ शिष्यवदस्पृशत् ॥१३-१२६-१९॥
sa tu vahnir-mahā-jvālo dagdhvā sarvam-aśeṣataḥ। viṣṇoḥ samīpam-āgamya pādau śiṣya-vad-aspṛśat ॥13-126-19॥
[स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; वह्निः (vahniḥ) - fire; महाज्वालः (mahājvālaḥ) - with great flames; दग्ध्वा (dagdhvā) - having burned; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; अशेषतः (aśeṣataḥ) - completely; विष्णोः (viṣṇoḥ) - of Viṣṇu; समीपम् (samīpam) - near; आगम्य (āgamya) - having come; पादौ (pādau) - feet; शिष्यवत् (śiṣya-vat) - like a disciple; अस्पृशत् (aspṛśat) - touched;]
(He but fire with great flames having burned all completely, of Viṣṇu near having come, feet like a disciple touched.)
But he, the fire with great flames, having burned everything completely, approached Viṣṇu and, like a disciple, touched his feet. (13-126-19)
ततो विष्णुर्वनं दृष्ट्वा निर्दग्धमरिकर्शनः। सौम्यैर्दृष्टिनिपातैस्तत्पुनः प्रकृतिमानयत् ॥१३-१२६-२०॥
tato viṣṇur vanaṃ dṛṣṭvā nirdagdham arikarśanaḥ। saumyair dṛṣṭinipātaiḥ tat punaḥ prakṛtim ānayat ॥13-126-20॥

(Then Viṣṇu, destroyer of enemies, having seen the forest completely burned, with gentle glances, that (forest) again to its original state restored.)

tathaiva sa girir bhūyaḥ prapuṣpita-latā-drumāḥ। sa-pakṣigaṇa-saṅghuṣṭaḥ sa-śvāpadasarīsṛpaḥ ॥13-126-21॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same manner; स (sa) - that; गिरिः (giriḥ) - mountain; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; प्रपुष्पितलताद्रुमः (prapuṣpita-latā-drumāḥ) - with blossoming creepers and trees; सपक्षिगणसङ्घुष्टः (sa-pakṣigaṇa-saṅghuṣṭaḥ) - resounding with flocks of birds; सश्वापदसरीसृपः (sa-śvāpadasarīsṛpaḥ) - with beasts and reptiles;]
(In the same manner, that mountain again (became) with blossoming creepers and trees, resounding with flocks of birds, with beasts and reptiles.)

तदद्भुतमचिन्त्यं च दृष्ट्वा मुनिगणस्तदा। विस्मितो हृष्टलोमा च बभूवास्राविलेक्षणः ॥१३-१२६-२२॥

(That wondrous, inconceivable, and having seen, the group of sages then, astonished, with hair standing on end and, became, with eyes filled with tears.)

ततो नारायणो दृष्ट्वा तानृषीन्विस्मयान्वितान्। प्रश्रितं मधुरं स्निग्धं पप्रच्छ वदतां वरः ॥१३-१२६-२३॥
tato nārāyaṇo dṛṣṭvā tān ṛṣīn vismayānvitān। praśritaṃ madhuraṃ snigdhaṃ papraccha vadatāṃ varaḥ ॥13-126-23॥

(Then Nārāyaṇa, having seen those sages filled with wonder, respectfully, sweetly, affectionately, asked, the best among speakers.)
Then Nārāyaṇa, seeing those sages filled with wonder, respectfully and affectionately asked them in a sweet manner, for he was the best of those who speak. (13-126-23)
किमस्य ऋषिपूगस्य त्यक्तसङ्गस्य नित्यशः। निर्ममस्यागमवतो विस्मयः समुपागतः ॥१३-१२६-२४॥
kim asya ṛṣipūgasya tyaktasaṅgasya nityaśaḥ। nirmamasya āgamavataḥ vismayaḥ samupāgataḥ ॥13-126-24॥

(What of this group of sages, of one who has abandoned attachment, always, of one who is free from possessiveness, of one possessing knowledge, astonishment has arisen?)
Why has astonishment arisen in this group of sages, who have always abandoned attachment, are free from possessiveness, and possess scriptural knowledge? (13-126-24)
एतं मे संशयं सर्वं याथातथ्यमनिन्दिताः। ऋषयो वक्तुमर्हन्ति निश्चितार्थं तपोधनाः ॥१३-१२६-२५॥
etaṃ me saṃśayaṃ sarvaṃ yāthātathyam aninditāḥ। ṛṣayo vaktum arhanti niścitārthaṃ tapodhanāḥ॥13-126-25॥
[एतं (etaṃ) - this; मे (me) - my; संशयं (saṃśayam) - doubt; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; याथातथ्यम् (yāthātathyam) - as it really is; अनिन्दिताः (aninditāḥ) - blameless ones; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to speak; अर्हन्ति (arhanti) - are worthy; निश्चितार्थम् (niścitārtham) - having ascertained the meaning; तपोधनाः (tapodhanāḥ) - rich in ascetic power;]

भवान्विसृजते लोकान्भवान्संहरते पुनः। भवाञ्शीतं भवानुष्णं भवानेव प्रवर्षति ॥१३-१२६-२६॥
bhavān visṛjate lokān bhavān saṃharate punaḥ। bhavān śītaṃ bhavān uṣṇaṃ bhavān eva pravaṛṣati ॥13-126-26॥
[भवान् (bhavān) - you (O Lord); विसृजते (visṛjate) - send forth; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; भवान् (bhavān) - you (O Lord); संहरते (saṃharate) - withdraw; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; भवान् (bhavān) - you (O Lord); शीतं (śītaṃ) - cold; भवान् (bhavān) - you (O Lord); उष्णं (uṣṇaṃ) - heat; भवान् (bhavān) - you (O Lord); एव (eva) - indeed; प्रवर्षति (pravarṣati) - cause to rain;]
(You send forth worlds, you withdraw (them) again. You (are) cold, you (are) heat, you indeed cause (it) to rain.)
You create the worlds, you withdraw them again. You are cold, you are heat, and you alone cause the rain. (13-126-26)
पृथिव्यां यानि भूतानि स्थावराणि चराणि च। तेषां पिता त्वं माता च प्रभुः प्रभव एव च ॥१३-१२६-२७॥
pṛthivyāṃ yāni bhūtāni sthāvarāṇi carāṇi ca। teṣāṃ pitā tvaṃ mātā ca prabhuḥ prabhava eva ca॥13-126-27॥
[पृथिव्यां (pṛthivyāṃ) - on the earth; यानि (yāni) - which; भूतानि (bhūtāni) - beings; स्थावराणि (sthāvarāṇi) - immovable (things); चराणि (carāṇi) - movable (things); च (ca) - and; तेषां (teṣāṃ) - of those; पिता (pitā) - father; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; माता (mātā) - mother; च (ca) - and; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - lord; प्रभव (prabhava) - origin; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and;]
(On the earth, which beings (exist), (both) immovable and movable and; of those, father you, mother and lord, origin indeed and.)
Among all the beings on earth, both immovable and movable, you are their father, mother, lord, and indeed their origin as well. (13-126-27)
एतन्नो विस्मयकरं प्रशंस मधुसूदन। त्वमेवार्हसि कल्याण वक्तुं वह्नेर्विनिर्गमम् ॥१३-१२६-२८॥
etan no vismayakaraṁ praśaṁsa madhusūdana। tvam eva arhasi kalyāṇa vaktuṁ vahner vinirgamam ॥13-126-28॥

(This to us causing wonder describe, O Madhusūdana. You indeed ought, auspicious one, to speak the emergence of fire.)
O Madhusūdana, describe this wonder to us. You alone indeed ought, O auspicious one, to speak of the emergence of fire. (13-126-28)
ततो विगतसन्त्रासा वयमप्यरिकर्शन। यच्छ्रुतं यच्च दृष्टं नस्तत्प्रवक्ष्यामहे हरे ॥१३-१२६-२९॥
tato vigatasanṯrāsā vayam apy arikarśana। yat śrutaṃ yac ca dṛṣṭaṃ nas tat pravakṣyāmahe hare ॥13-126-29॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; विगतसन्त्रासाः (vigatasanṯrāsāḥ) - having dispelled fear; वयम् (vayam) - we; अपि (api) - also; अरिकर्शन (arikarśana) - O afflicter of enemies; यत् (yat) - what; श्रुतम् (śrutam) - has been heard; यत् (yat) - what; च (ca) - and; दृष्टम् (dṛṣṭam) - has been seen; नः (naḥ) - by us; तत् (tat) - that; प्रवक्ष्यामहे (pravakṣyāmahe) - we shall declare; हरे (hare) - O Hari;]
(Then, having dispelled fear, we also, O afflicter of enemies, what has been heard, what and has been seen by us, that we shall declare, O Hari.)
Then, having overcome fear, we too, O afflicter of enemies, will declare to you, O Hari, whatever we have heard and whatever we have seen. (13-126-29)

etat tad vaiṣṇavaṃ tejo mama vaktrād viniḥsṛtam। kṛṣṇavartmā yugāntābho yenāyaṃ mathito giriḥ ॥13-126-30॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; तद् (tad) - that; वैष्णवम् (vaiṣṇavam) - of Viṣṇu; तेजः (tejaḥ) - energy; मम (mama) - my; वक्त्रात् (vaktrāt) - from (my) mouth; विनिःसृतम् (viniḥsṛtam) - emerged; कृष्णवर्त्मा (kṛṣṇavartmā) - Kr̥ṣṇa as the path; युगान्ताभः (yugāntābhaḥ) - having the appearance of the end of an age; येन (yena) - by which; अयम् (ayam) - this; मथितः (mathitaḥ) - was churned; गिरिः (giriḥ) - mountain;]
(This, that energy of Viṣṇu, of mine, issued from (my) mouth. Kr̥ṣṇa as the path, having the appearance of the end of an age, by which this mountain was churned.)
This, that very energy of Viṣṇu, which emerged from my mouth—Kr̥ṣṇa as the path and resembling the end of the age—by which this mountain was churned. (13-126-30)
ऋषयश्चार्तिमापन्ना जितक्रोधा जितेन्द्रियाः। भवन्तो व्यथिताश्चासन्देवकल्पास्तपोधनाः ॥१३-१२६-३१॥
ṛṣayaś cārti-m-āpannā jita-krodhā jitendriyāḥ। bhavanto vyathitāś cāsan deva-kalpās tapodhanāḥ ॥13-126-31॥
[ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; च (ca) - and; आर्तिम् (ārtim) - distress; आपन्नाः (āpannāḥ) - having attained; जितक्रोधाः (jita-krodhāḥ) - those who have conquered anger; जितेन्द्रियाः (jitendriyāḥ) - those who have controlled the senses; भवन्तः (bhavantaḥ) - you all; व्यथिताः (vyathitāḥ) - agitated; च (ca) - and; आसन (āsan) - were; देवकल्पाः (deva-kalpāḥ) - god-like; तपोधनाः (tapodhanāḥ) - rich in austerity;]
(Sages and (who were) plunged into distress, having conquered anger, having controlled (their) senses, you all, agitated and (who) were god-like, rich in austerity.)
The sages, who had conquered anger and their senses, and who were rich in austerity and god-like, were plunged into distress; you all were agitated. (13-126-31)
व्रतचर्यापरीतस्य तपस्विव्रतसेवया। मम वह्निः समुद्भूतो न वै व्यथितुमर्हथ ॥१३-१२६-३२॥
vratacaryāparītasya tapasvi-vrata-sevayā। mama vahniḥ samudbhūto na vai vyathitum arhatha ॥13-126-32॥
[व्रतचर्या (vratacaryā) - by observance of vows; अरीतस्य (aparītasya) - and filled with; तपस्विव्रतसेवया (tapasvi-vrata-sevayā) - by the service of the ascetic's vow; मम (mama) - my; वह्निः (vahniḥ) - fire; समुद्भूतः (samudbhūtaḥ) - arisen; न (na) - not; वै (vai) - indeed; व्यथितुम् (vyathitum) - to disturb; अर्हथ (arhatha) - you are able;]
(By observance of vows and filled with the service of the ascetic's vow, my fire has arisen; you indeed are not able to disturb (it).)
By my observance of vows and dedicated service to ascetic discipline, my fire has arisen; truly, you are incapable of disturbing it. (13-126-32)
व्रतं चर्तुमिहायातस्त्वहं गिरिमिमं शुभम्। पुत्रं चात्मसमं वीर्ये तपसा स्रष्टुमागतः ॥१३-१२६-३३॥
vrataṃ cartum ihāyātas tv ahaṃ girim imaṃ śubham। putraṃ cātmasamaṃ vīrye tapasā sraṣṭum āgataḥ॥13-126-33॥
[व्रतं (vrataṃ) - vow; चर्तुम् (cartum) - to perform; इह (iha) - here; आयातः (āyātaḥ) - I have come; त्व (tv) - indeed; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; गिरिम् (girim) - mountain; इमं (imaṃ) - this; शुभम् (śubham) - auspicious; पुत्रं (putraṃ) - son; च (ca) - and; आत्मसमं (ātmasamaṃ) - equal to myself; वीर्ये (vīrye) - in valor; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; स्रष्टुम् (sraṣṭum) - to create; आगतः (āgataḥ) - I have come;]
(Vow to perform here I have come indeed I, mountain this auspicious. Son and equal to myself in valor by austerity to create I have come.)
I have come here to perform a vow, indeed, to this auspicious mountain; I have also come to create, by austerity, a son equal to myself in valor. (13-126-33)
ततो ममात्मा यो देहे सोऽग्निर्भूत्वा विनिःसृतः। गतश्च वरदं द्रष्टुं सर्वलोकपितामहम् ॥१३-१२६-३४॥
tato mamātmā yo dehe so'gnirbhūtvā viniḥsṛtaḥ। gataśca varadaṃ draṣṭuṃ sarvalokapitāmaham ॥13-126-34॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; मम (mama) - my; आत्मा (ātmā) - self; यः (yaḥ) - who; देहे (dehe) - in the body; सः (saḥ) - he; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - becoming; विनिःसृतः (viniḥsṛtaḥ) - gone out; गतः (gataḥ) - gone; च (ca) - and; वरदं (varadam) - the bestower of boons; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; सर्वलोकपितामहम् (sarvalokapitāmaham) - the grandsire of all worlds;]
(Then my self who (was) in the body, having become fire, went out; and went to see the bestower of boons, the grandsire of all worlds.)
Then my very self, who resided in the body, having become fire, departed and went to see the bestower of boons, the grandsire of all worlds. (13-126-34)
तेन चात्मानुशिष्टो मे पुत्रत्वे मुनिसत्तमाः। तेजसोऽर्धेन पुत्रस्ते भवितेति वृषध्वजः ॥१३-१२६-३५॥
tena cātmānuśiṣṭo me putratve munisattamāḥ। tejaso'rdhena putraste bhaviteti vṛṣadhvajaḥ॥13-126-35॥
[तेन (tena) - by him; च (ca) - and; आत्मा- अनुशिष्टः (ātmānuśiṣṭaḥ) - the self-appointed; मे (me) - to me; पुत्रत्वे (putratve) - in sonship; मुनि-सत्तमाः (munisattamāḥ) - O best of sages; तेजसः (tejasaḥ) - of energy; अर्धेन (ardhena) - with half; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; ते (te) - your; भविता (bhavitā) - will become; इति (iti) - thus; वृषध्वजः (vṛṣadhvajaḥ) - Vṛṣadhvaja (Śiva);]
(By him and self-appointed to me in sonship, O best of sages. With half of energy your son will become, thus (said) Vṛṣadhvaja.)
By him, self-assigned to me as a son, O best of sages, Vṛṣadhvaja (Śiva) said: "With half of my energy, your son will be born." (13-126-35)
सोऽयं वह्निरुपागम्य पादमूले ममान्तिकम्। शिष्यवत्परिचर्याथ शान्तः प्रकृतिमागतः ॥१३-१२६-३६॥
so'yaṃ vahnirupāgamya pādamūle mamāntikam। śiṣyavatparicaryātha śāntaḥ prakṛtimāgataḥ ॥13-126-36॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अयम् (ayam) - this; वह्निः (vahniḥ) - fire; (here: Agni, the Fire god, or the sacrificial fire) उपागम्य (upāgamya) - having approached; पादमूले (pādamūle) - at (the) feet; मम (mama) - my; अन्तिकम् (antikam) - near; proximity; शिष्यवत् (śiṣyavat) - like a disciple; परिचर्याअर्थ (paricaryārtha) - for the purpose of service; शान्तः (śāntaḥ) - calm; peaceful; प्रकृतिम् (prakṛtim) - (his) original nature; आगतः (āgataḥ) - having assumed; returned to;]
(He, this fire, having approached near my feet, for the purpose of service like a disciple, calm, having returned to his original nature.)
He—this Fire—came near my feet, peacefully, like a disciple wishing to serve, having returned to his own true nature. (13-126-36)
एतदस्य रहस्यं वः पद्मनाभस्य धीमतः। मया प्रेम्णा समाख्यातं न भीः कार्या तपोधनाः ॥१३-१२६-३७॥
etad asya rahasyaṁ vaḥ padmanābhasya dhīmataḥ। mayā premṇā samākhyātaṁ na bhīḥ kāryā tapodhanāḥ॥13-126-37॥
[एतदस्य (etad asya) - this of him; रहस्यं (rahasyaṁ) - secret; वः (vaḥ) - to you (plural); पद्मनाभस्य (padmanābhasya) - of Padmanabha; धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - of the wise one; मया (mayā) - by me; प्रेम्णा (premṇā) - with affection; समाख्यातं (samākhyātaṁ) - completely told; न (na) - not; भीः (bhīḥ) - fear; कार्या (kāryā) - should be made (should be had); तपोधनाः (tapodhanāḥ) - ascetics (those rich in austerity);]
(This secret of his to you, of Padmanabha, of the wise one, by me with affection has been completely told; not fear should be made, ascetics.)
This secret of Padmanabha, the wise, has been told to you by me out of affection; ascetics, you should not be afraid. (13-126-37)
सर्वत्र गतिरव्यग्रा भवतां दीर्घदर्शनाः। तपस्विव्रतसंदीप्ता ज्ञानविज्ञानशोभिताः ॥१३-१२६-३८॥
sarvatra gatiravyagrā bhavatāṃ dīrghadarśanāḥ। tapasvivratasandīptā jñānavijñānaśobhitāḥ ॥13-126-38॥
[सर्वत्र (sarvatra) - everywhere; गतिः (gatiḥ) - movement; अव्यग्रा (avyagrā) - undisturbed; भवताम् (bhavatām) - of you; दीर्घदर्शनाः (dīrghadarśanāḥ) - far-sighted ones; तपस्वि-व्रत-संदीप्ता (tapasvi-vrata-sandīptā) - inflamed with the vow of ascetics; ज्ञान-विज्ञान-शोभिताः (jñāna-vijñāna-śobhitāḥ) - adorned with knowledge and discernment;]
(Everywhere movement undisturbed of you, far-sighted ones, inflamed with the vow of ascetics, adorned with knowledge and discernment.)
You, the far-sighted ones, move everywhere unhindered, dedicated to ascetic vows and glowing with self-discipline, adorned with knowledge and wisdom. (13-126-38)
यच्छ्रुतं यच्च वो दृष्टं दिवि वा यदि वा भुवि। आश्चर्यं परमं किञ्चित्तद्भवन्तो ब्रुवन्तु मे ॥१३-१२६-३९॥
yacchrutaṃ yacca vo dṛṣṭaṃ divi vā yadi vā bhuvi। āścaryaṃ paramaṃ kiñcittadbhavanto bruvantu me ॥13-126-39॥
[यत् (yat) - which; श्रुतम् (śrutam) - heard; यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; वः (vaḥ) - by you; दृष्टम् (dṛṣṭam) - seen; दिवि (divi) - in heaven; वा (vā) - or; यदि (yadi) - if; वा (vā) - or; भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth; आश्चर्यम् (āścaryam) - wonder; परमम् (paramam) - supreme; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - something; तत् (tat) - that; भवन्तः (bhavantaḥ) - you (honorable ones); ब्रुवन्तु (bruvantu) - let speak; मे (me) - to me;]
(Which heard, and which by you seen in heaven or if or on earth, supreme wonder something that you (honorable ones) let speak to me.)
Tell me, O honorable ones, of whatever supreme wonder you have heard or seen, whether in heaven or on earth. (13-126-39)
तस्यामृतनिकाशस्य वाङ्मधोरस्ति मे स्पृहा। भवद्भिः कथितस्येह तपोवननिवासिभिः ॥१३-१२६-४०॥
tasyāmṛtanikāśasya vāṅ-madhor asti me spṛhā। bhavadbhiḥ kathitasyaiha tapovana-nivāsibhiḥ ॥13-126-40॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of that; अमृतनिकाशस्य (amṛta-nikāśasya) - like nectar; वाङ्मधोः (vāṅ-madhoḥ) - of the sweetness of speech; अस्ति (asti) - there is; मे (me) - for me; स्पृहा (spṛhā) - desire; भवद्भिः (bhavadbhiḥ) - by you; कथितस्य (kathitasya) - of what is spoken; इह (iha) - here; तपोवननिवासिभिः (tapovana-nivāsibhiḥ) - by the forest-dwellers;]
(Of that like nectar sweetness of speech, there is for me desire; by you of what is spoken here by the forest-dwellers.)

yadyapy aham adṛṣṭaṃ vā divyam adbhuta-darśanam। divi vā bhuvi vā kiñcit paśyāmi amala-darśanāḥ॥13-126-41॥

Although I may not have seen, or if I see something divine and wondrous in appearance—whether in heaven or on earth—or any pure vision, (13-126-41)
प्रकृतिः सा मम परा न क्वचित्प्रतिहन्यते। न चात्मगतमैश्वर्यमाश्चर्यं प्रतिभाति मे ॥१३-१२६-४२॥
prakṛtiḥ sā mama parā na kvacit pratihanyate। na ca ātmagatam aiśvaryam āścaryam pratibhāti me ॥13-126-42॥

(Nature she my supreme not at any time is obstructed. Not and inherent in self sovereignty wonder appears to me.)
That nature of mine, the supreme one, is never obstructed at any time. Nor does the wondrous sovereignty inherent in myself appear as a marvel to me. (13-126-42)
श्रद्धेयः कथितो ह्यर्थः सज्जनश्रवणं गतः। चिरं तिष्ठति मेदिन्यां शैले लेख्यमिवार्पितम् ॥१३-१२६-४३॥
śraddheyaḥ kathito hy arthaḥ sajjana-śravaṇaṃ gataḥ। ciraṃ tiṣṭhati medinyāṃ śaile lekhyam iva arpitam॥13-126-43॥

(Worthy of faith, the meaning indeed spoken, having gone into the hearing of the good, for long remains on earth like writing fixed on a mountain.)
A trustworthy meaning that has been spoken and heard by good people endures long on earth, like writing carved upon a mountain. (13-126-43)
तदहं सज्जनमुखान्निःसृतं तत्समागमे। कथयिष्याम्यहरहर्बुद्धिदीपकरं नृणाम् ॥१३-१२६-४४॥
tad ahaṃ sajjanamukhān niḥsṛtaṃ tat-samāgame। kathayiṣyāmy aharahar buddhidīpakaraṃ nṛṇām ॥13-126-44॥
[तद् (tad) - that; अहम् (aham) - I; सज्जनमुखात् (sajjana-mukhāt) - from the mouth of good people; निःसृतम् (niḥsṛtam) - emerged; तत् (tat) - that; समागमे (samāgame) - in the assembly; कथयिष्यामि (kathayiṣyāmi) - I shall relate; अहरहम् (ahar aham) - day by day; बुद्धिदीपकरम् (buddhi-dīpakaram) - intellect-illuminating; नृणाम् (nṛṇām) - of men;]
(That I, which from the mouth of good people emerged, in that assembly, I shall relate day by day, intellect-illuminating, of men.)
That which has emerged from the mouths of good people, I shall relate in that assembly day by day, as it illuminates the intellects of men. (13-126-44)
ततो मुनिगणाः सर्वे प्रश्रिताः कृष्णसंनिधौ। नेत्रैः पद्मदलप्रख्यैरपश्यन्त जनार्दनम् ॥१३-१२६-४५॥
tato munigaṇāḥ sarve praśritāḥ kṛṣṇasaṃnidhau। netraiḥ padmadalaprakhyairapaśyanta janārdanam ॥13-126-45॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; मुनिगणाः (munigaṇāḥ) - groups of sages; सर्वे (sarve) - all; प्रश्रिताः (praśritāḥ) - humble; कृष्णसंनिधौ (kṛṣṇasaṃnidhau) - in the presence of Kṛṣṇa; नेत्रैः (netraiḥ) - with eyes; पद्मदलप्रख्यैः (padmadalaprakhyaiḥ) - like lotus petals; अपश्यन्त (apaśyanta) - they saw; जनार्दनम् (janārdanam) - Janārdana (Kṛṣṇa);]
(Then, all the groups of sages, humble, in the presence of Kṛṣṇa, with eyes like lotus petals, saw Janārdana.)

वर्धयन्तस्तथैवान्ये पूजयन्तस्तथापरे। वाग्भिरृग्भूषितार्थाभिः स्तुवन्तो मधुसूदनम् ॥१३-१२६-४६॥
vardhayantaḥ tathaiva anye pūjayantaḥ tathā-apare। vāgbhiḥ ṛgbhūṣita-arthābhiḥ stuvantaḥ madhusūdanam ॥13-126-46॥

यदाश्चर्यमचिन्त्यं च गिरौ हिमवति प्रभो। अनुभूतं मुनिगणैस्तीर्थयात्रापरायणैः ॥१३-१२६-४८॥
yad-āścaryam-acintyaṃ ca girau himavati prabho। anubhūtaṃ muni-gaṇaiḥ tīrtha-yātrā-parāyaṇaiḥ ॥13-126-48॥
[यत् (yat) - which; आश्चर्यम् (āścaryam) - wonder; अचिन्त्यम् (acintyam) - inconceivable; च (ca) - and; गिरौ (girau) - in the mountain; हिमवति (himavati) - in Himavat; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord; अनुभूतम् (anubhūtam) - experienced; मुनिगणैः (munigaṇaiḥ) - by groups of sages; तीर्थयात्रा-परायणैः (tīrthayātrāparāyaṇaiḥ) - by those devoted to pilgrimage;]
(Which, wonder, inconceivable and, in the mountain, in Himavat, O lord, experienced by groups of sages, by those devoted to pilgrimage.)
O lord, whatever wonderful and inconceivable things have been experienced in the Himavat mountain by groups of sages devoted to pilgrimage— (13-126-48)
तद्भवानृषिसङ्घस्य हितार्थं सर्वचोदितः। यथादृष्टं हृषीकेशे सर्वमाख्यातुमर्हति ॥१३-१२६-४९॥
tad bhavān ṛṣi-saṅghasya hitārthaṃ sarva-coditaḥ। yathā dṛṣṭaṃ hṛṣīkeśe sarvam ākhyātum arhati॥13-126-49॥
[तद् (tad) - therefore; भवान् (bhavān) - you (honorific); ऋषिसङ्घस्य (ṛṣi-saṅghasya) - of the assembly of sages; हितार्थं (hitārtham) - for the purpose of welfare; सर्वचोदितः (sarva-coditaḥ) - urged by all; यथा (yathā) - as; दृष्टं (dṛṣṭam) - seen; हृषीकेशे (hṛṣīkeśe) - in Hṛṣīkeśa; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; आख्यातुम् (ākhyātum) - to narrate; अर्हति (arhati) - is capable;]
(Therefore you, for the purpose of welfare of the assembly of sages, urged by all, as seen in Hṛṣīkeśa, are capable to narrate all.)
Therefore, being urged by all, you are able to narrate everything as seen in Hṛṣīkeśa for the welfare of the assembly of sages. (13-126-49)
एवमुक्तः स मुनिभिर्नारदो भगवानृषिः। कथयामास देवर्षिः पूर्ववृत्तां कथां शुभाम् ॥१३-१२६-५०॥
evam-uktaḥ sa munibhir nārado bhagavān ṛṣiḥ। kathayām āsa devarṣiḥ pūrvavṛttāṃ kathāṃ śubhām ॥13-126-50॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been addressed; स (sa) - he; मुनिभिः (munibhiḥ) - by the sages; नारदः (nāradaḥ) - Nārada; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the revered; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; कथयाम् (kathayām) - began to tell; आस (āsa) - (he) began; देवर्षिः (devarṣiḥ) - the divine sage; पूर्ववृत्ताम् (pūrvavṛttām) - former event; कथाम् (kathām) - story; शुभाम् (śubhām) - auspicious;]
(Thus addressed by the sages, Nārada, the revered sage, the divine sage, began to tell the former auspicious story.)
Thus, having been addressed by the sages, the revered sage Nārada began to narrate the auspicious tale of previous events. (13-126-50)
