दिव्यपुष्पसमाकीर्णं दिव्यमालाविभूषितम्। दिव्यचन्दनसंयुक्तं दिव्यधूपेन धूपितम् ॥ तत्सदो वृषभाङ्कस्य दिव्यवादित्रनादितम् ॥१३-१२७-७॥
divya-puṣpa-samākīrṇaṁ divya-mālā-vibhūṣitam। divya-candana-saṁyuktaṁ divya-dhūpena dhūpitam ॥ tat-sadaḥ vṛṣabhāṅkasya divya-vāditra-nāditam ॥13-127-7॥

मृदङ्गपणवोद्घुष्टं शङ्खभेरीनिनादितम्। नृत्यद्भिर्भूतसङ्घैश्च बर्हिणैश्च समन्ततः ॥१३-१२७-८॥
mṛdaṅga-paṇava-udghuṣṭaṃ śaṅkha-bherī-nināditam। nṛtyadbhiḥ bhūta-saṅghaiś ca barhiṇaiś ca samantataḥ ॥13-127-8॥
[मृदङ्गपणवोद्घुष्टं (mṛdaṅga-paṇava-udghuṣṭam) - resounded with drums and kettledrums; शङ्खभेरीनिनादितम् (śaṅkha-bherī-nināditam) - reverberated by conch-shells and great drums; नृत्यद्भिः (nṛtyadbhiḥ) - by those who are dancing; भूतसङ्घैः (bhūta-saṅghaiḥ) - by groups of spirits; च (ca) - and; बर्हिणैः (barhiṇaiḥ) - by peacocks; च (ca) - and; समन्ततः (samantataḥ) - all around;]

All around, the place echoed with the sounds of mṛdaṅga and paṇava drums, conch-shells, and bherī drums, as groups of spirits and peacocks danced everywhere. (13-127-8)
प्रनृत्ताप्सरसं दिव्यं दिव्यस्त्रीगणसेवितम्। दृष्टिकान्तमनिर्देश्यं दिव्यमद्भुतदर्शनम् ॥१३-१२७-९॥
pranṛttāpsarasaṃ divyaṃ divyastrīgaṇasevitam। dṛṣṭikāntamanirdeśyaṃ divyamadbhutadarśanam ॥13-127-9॥

स गिरिस्तपसा तस्य भूतेशस्य व्यरोचत। स्वाध्यायपरमैर्विप्रैर्ब्रह्मघोषैर्विनादितः। षट्पदैरुपगीतैश्च माधवाप्रतिमो गिरिः ॥१३-१२७-११॥
sa giris tapasā tasya bhūteśasya vyarocata। svādhyāya-paramair viprair brahma-ghoṣaiḥ vināditaḥ। ṣaṭpadair upa-gītaiś ca mādhava-apratimaḥ giriḥ ॥13-127-11॥
[स (sa) - that; गिरिः (giriḥ) - mountain; तपसा (tapasā) - by penance; तस्य (tasya) - of him; भूतेशस्य (bhūteśasya) - of the lord of beings; व्यारोचत (vyarocata) - shone; स्वाध्यायपरमैः (svādhyāya-paramaiḥ) - engaged in Vedic recitation; विप्रैः (vipraiḥ) - by the brahmins; ब्रह्मघोषैः (brahma-ghoṣaiḥ) - with Vedic chants; विनादितः (vināditaḥ) - resounded; षट्पदैः (ṣaṭpadaiḥ) - by bees; उपगीतैः (upa-gītaiḥ) - with (their) sung; च (ca) - and; माधवप्रतिमः (mādhava-apratimaḥ) - equal to Mādhava (Krishna/Vishnu); गिरिः (giriḥ) - mountain;]
(That mountain by penance of him, the lord of beings, shone. Resounded with Vedic chants by brahmins engaged in Vedic recitation, and with songs by bees, the mountain, equal to Mādhava, (shone).)

तं महोत्सवसङ्काशं भीमरूपधरं पुनः। दृष्ट्वा मुनिगणस्यासीत्परा प्रीतिर्जनार्दन ॥१३-१२७-१२॥
taṁ mahotsavasaṅkāśaṁ bhīmarūpadharaṁ punaḥ। dṛṣṭvā munigaṇasyāsītparā prītirjanārdana ॥13-127-12॥
[तं (taṁ) - him; महोत्सवसङ्काशं (mahotsavasaṅkāśam) - festival-like; भीमरूपधरं (bhīmarūpadharam) - assuming a terrifying form; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; मुनिगणस्य (munigaṇasya) - of the group of sages; आसीत् (āsīt) - there was; परा (parā) - supreme; प्रीतिः (prītiḥ) - joy; जनार्दन (janārdana) - O Janārdana;]
(Him festival-like, assuming a terrifying form again, having seen, of the group of sages there was supreme joy, O Janārdana.)
O Janārdana, upon seeing him, who was festival-like and assuming a terrifying form again, the group of sages experienced supreme joy. (13-127-12)
मुनयश्च महाभागाः सिद्धाश्चैवोर्ध्वरेतसः। मरुतो वसवः साध्या विश्वेदेवाः सनातनाः ॥१३-१२७-१३॥
munayaś ca mahābhāgāḥ siddhāś caiva ūrdhvaretasaḥ। maruto vasavaḥ sādhyā viśvedevāḥ sanātanāḥ ॥13-127-13॥
[मुनयः (munayaḥ) - sages; च (ca) - and; महाभागाः (mahābhāgāḥ) - greatly fortunate; सिद्धाः (siddhāḥ) - perfected beings; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; ऊर्ध्वरेतसः (ūrdhvaretasaḥ) - who have upward-flowing energy (celibate); मरुतः (marutaḥ) - Maruts (wind-gods); वसवः (vasavaḥ) - Vasus (a class of deities); साध्याः (sādhyāḥ) - Sādhyas (a class of deities); विश्वेदेवाः (viśvedevāḥ) - Viśvedevas (all the gods); सनातनाः (sanātanāḥ) - eternal;]

यक्षा नागाः पिशाचाश्च लोकपाला हुताशनाः। भावाश्च सर्वे न्यग्भूतास्तत्रैवासन्समागताः ॥१३-१२७-१४॥
yakṣā nāgāḥ piśācāś ca lokapālā hutāśanāḥ। bhāvāś ca sarve nyagbhūtās tatraiva āsan samāgatāḥ॥13-127-14॥
[यक्षा (yakṣā) - yakṣas; नागाः (nāgāḥ) - nāgas; पिशाचाः (piśācāḥ) - piśācas; च (ca) - and; लोकपाला (lokapālā) - guardians of the worlds; हुताशनाः (hutāśanāḥ) - fires (Agnis); भावाः (bhāvāḥ) - beings; च (ca) - and; सर्वे (sarve) - all; न्यग्भूताः (nyagbhūtāḥ) - subdued; तत्र (tatra) - there; एव (eva) - indeed; आसन (āsan) - were; समागताः (samāgatāḥ) - assembled;]

ऋतवः सर्वपुष्पैश्च व्यकिरन्त महाद्भुतैः। ओषध्यो ज्वलमानाश्च द्योतयन्ति स्म तद्वनम् ॥१३-१२७-१५॥
ṛtavaḥ sarvapuṣpaiś ca vyakiranta mahādbhutaiḥ। oṣadhyo jvalamānāś ca dyotayanti sma tad vanam ॥13-127-15॥

विहगाश्च मुदा युक्ताः प्रानृत्यन्व्यनदंश्च ह। गिरिपृष्ठेषु रम्येषु व्याहरन्तो जनप्रियाः ॥१३-१२७-१६॥
vihagāś ca mudā yuktāḥ prā-nṛtyan vy-anadan ca ha। giri-pṛṣṭheṣu ramyeṣu vy-āharanto janapriyāḥ॥13-127-16॥

(Birds and with joy joined, dancing about, crying out loudly and indeed, on charming mountain slopes, uttering (sounds), dear to people.)

तत्र देवो गिरितटे दिव्यधातुविभूषिते। पर्यङ्क इव विभ्राजन्नुपविष्टो महामनाः ॥१३-१२७-१७॥

हरिश्मश्रुर्जटी भीमो भयकर्ता सुरद्विषाम्। अभयः सर्वभूतानां भक्तानां वृषभध्वजः ॥१३-१२७-१९॥
hariśmaśru-jaṭī bhīmaḥ bhayakartā suradviṣām। abhayaḥ sarvabhūtānāṃ bhaktānāṃ vṛṣabhadhvajaḥ॥13-127-19॥

(By the closed eyes but, having the nature of darkness, unconscious, without oblation, without the Vaṣaṭ call, that assembly-hall suddenly became.)
But when the eyes were closed, that assembly became suddenly dark, unconscious, lacking oblations and Vaṣaṭ calls. (13-127-27)
जनश्च विमनाः सर्वो भयत्राससमन्वितः। निमीलिते भूतपतौ नष्टसूर्य इवाभवत् ॥१३-१२७-२८॥
janaś ca vimanāḥ sarvo bhayatrāsasamanvitaḥ। nimīlite bhūtapatau naṣṭasūrya ivābhavat॥13-127-28॥

ततो वितिमिरो लोकः क्षणेन समपद्यत। ज्वाला च महती दीप्ता ललाटात्तस्य निःसृता ॥१३-१२७-२९॥
tato vitimiro lokaḥ kṣaṇena samapadyata। jvālā ca mahatī dīptā lalāṭāt tasya niḥsṛtā ॥13-127-29॥

(By herds of deer, swift, frightened, having approached the side of Hara (Śiva), and also having found refuge, that assembly appeared crowded.)

ततो नभःस्पृशज्वालो विद्युल्लोलार्चिरुज्ज्वलः। द्वादशादित्यसदृशो युगान्ताग्निरिवापरः ॥१३-१२७-३४॥
tato nabhaḥ-spṛśa-jvālo vidyut-lolārcir-ujjvalaḥ। dvādaśāditya-sadṛśo yugānta-agniḥ-iva-aparaḥ ॥13-127-34॥

(Then became again all in natural state, beautiful, cheerful birds and indeed full of blossoms forest trees.)

प्रकृतिस्थं गिरिं दृष्ट्वा प्रीता देवी महेश्वरम्। उवाच सर्वभूतानां पतिं पतिमनिन्दिता ॥१३-१२७-३९॥

किमर्थं ते ललाटे वै तृतीयं नेत्रमुत्थितम्। किमर्थं च गिरिर्दग्धः सपक्षिगणकाननः ॥१३-१२७-४१॥
kimarthaṁ te lalāṭe vai tṛtīyaṁ netram utthitam। kimarthaṁ ca girir dagdhaḥ sa-pakṣigaṇa-kānanaḥ ॥13-127-41॥
[किमर्थं (kimartham) - for what reason; ते (te) - your; ललाटे (lalāṭe) - on the forehead; वै (vai) - indeed; तृतीयं (tṛtīyam) - third; नेत्रम् (netram) - eye; उत्थितम् (utthitam) - arisen; किमर्थं (kimartham) - for what reason; च (ca) - and; गिरिः (giriḥ) - mountain; दग्धः (dagdhaḥ) - burnt; सपक्षिगणकाननः (sa-pakṣigaṇa-kānanaḥ) - with the forests of hosts of birds;]
(For what reason is your third eye arisen indeed on the forehead? And for what reason was the mountain burnt with the forests of hosts of birds?)
For what reason did your third eye arise on your forehead? And for what purpose was the mountain, along with all its bird-filled forests, burned? (13-127-41)
किमर्थं च पुनर्देव प्रकृतिस्थः क्षणात्कृतः। तथैव द्रुमसञ्छन्नः कृतोऽयं ते महेश्वर ॥१३-१२७-४२॥
kimarthaṃ ca punar deva prakṛtisthaḥ kṣaṇāt kṛtaḥ। tathaiva druma-sañchannaḥ kṛto'yaṃ te maheśvara ॥13-127-42॥
[किमर्थम् (kimartham) - for what reason; च (ca) - and; पुनः (punar) - again; देव (deva) - O god; प्रकृतिस्थः (prakṛtisthaḥ) - situated in the original state; क्षणात् (kṣaṇāt) - in a moment; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - made; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; द्रुमसञ्छन्नः (druma-sañchannaḥ) - covered by trees; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - made; अयम् (ayam) - this; ते (te) - by you; महेश्वर (maheśvara) - O great Lord;]
(For what reason and again, O god, the one situated in the original state was made, in a moment? In the same way, covered by trees, this was made by you, O great Lord.)
O great Lord, for what reason, and again, O god, was the one in his original state created in a moment? Likewise, why was this (being) covered by trees also made by you? (13-127-42)
महेश्वर उवाच॥

[महेश्वर (maheśvara) - great lord; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
(Great lord said;)
The great lord said.
नेत्रे मे संवृते देवि त्वया बाल्यादनिन्दिते। नष्टालोकस्ततो लोकः क्षणेन समपद्यत ॥१३-१२७-४३॥
netre me saṁvṛte devi tvayā bālyād anindite। naṣṭā-lokas tato lokaḥ kṣaṇena samapadyata ॥13-127-43॥
[नेत्रे (netre) - eyes; मे (me) - my; संवृते (saṁvṛte) - covered; देवि (devi) - O goddess; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; बाल्यात् (bālyāt) - from childishness; अनिन्दिते (anindite) - O irreproachable one; नष्टालोकः (naṣṭā-lokaḥ) - lost sight; ततः (tataḥ) - thereupon; लोकः (lokaḥ) - world (here: vision, sight); क्षणेन (kṣaṇena) - in an instant; समपद्यत (samapadyata) - was attained (came to pass);]
(Eyes my covered O goddess by you from childishness O irreproachable one; lost sight thereupon world (vision) in an instant was attained.)
O goddess, when my eyes were covered by you out of childishness, O irreproachable one, then sight was lost and the world disappeared in an instant. (13-127-43)
नष्टादित्ये तथा लोके तमोभूते नगात्मजे। तृतीयं लोचनं दीप्तं सृष्टं ते रक्षता प्रजाः ॥१३-१२७-४४॥
naṣṭāditye tathā loke tamobhūte nagātmaje। tṛtīyaṃ locanaṃ dīptaṃ sṛṣṭaṃ te rakṣatā prajāḥ ॥13-127-44॥
[नष्ट-Adित्ये (naṣṭāditye) - when the sun was lost; तथा (tathā) - thus; लोके (loke) - in the world; तमो-भूते (tamo-bhūte) - being filled with darkness; नग-आत्मज (naga-ātmaje) - O son of the mountain; तृतीयं (tṛtīyam) - the third; लोचनं (locanam) - eye; दीप्तं (dīptam) - shining; सृष्टं (sṛṣṭam) - was created; ते (te) - by you; रक्षता (rakṣatā) - to protect; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - creatures;]
(When the sun was lost, thus, in the world being full of darkness, O son of the mountain, the third eye shining was created by you to protect the creatures.)
When the sun was lost and the world was plunged into darkness, O son of the mountain, your shining third eye was created to protect all creatures. (13-127-44)
तस्य चाक्ष्णो महत्तेजो येनायं मथितो गिरिः। त्वत्प्रियार्थं च मे देवि प्रकृतिस्थः क्षणात्कृतः ॥१३-१२७-४५॥
tasya cākṣṇo mahattejo yenāyaṁ mathito giriḥ। tvatpriyārthaṁ ca me devi prakṛtisthaḥ kṣaṇātkṛtaḥ॥13-127-45॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of his; चाक्ष्णः (cākṣṇaḥ) - of the eye; महत् (mahat) - great; तेजः (tejaḥ) - splendor; येन (yena) - by which; अयम् (ayam) - this; मथितः (mathitaḥ) - churned; गिरिः (giriḥ) - mountain; त्वत्प्रियार्थम् (tvatpriyārtham) - for your dear sake; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - by me; देवि (devi) - O goddess; प्रकृतिस्थः (prakṛtisthaḥ) - in the natural state; क्षणात् (kṣaṇāt) - from the moment; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - made;]
(Of his eye's great splendor, by which this mountain was churned; for your dear sake and by me, O goddess, from the moment the natural state was made.)
It was by the great radiance of his eye, O goddess, that this mountain was churned; and for your sake, I have restored it to its natural state immediately. (13-127-45)

भगवन्केन ते वक्त्रं चन्द्रवत्प्रियदर्शनम्। पूर्वं तथैव श्रीकान्तमुत्तरं पश्चिमं तथा ॥१३-१२७-४६॥
bhagavan kena te vaktraṃ candravat priyadarśanam। pūrvaṃ tathaiva śrīkāntam uttaraṃ paścimaṃ tathā ॥13-127-46॥
[भगवन् (bhagavan) - O Lord; केन (kena) - by what; ते (te) - your; वक्त्रं (vaktraṃ) - face; चन्द्रवत् (candravat) - like the moon; प्रियदर्शनम् (priyadarśanam) - delightful to behold; पूर्वं (pūrvaṃ) - the east; तथैव (tathaiva) - likewise; श्रीकान्तम् (śrīkāntam) - splendorous; उत्तरं (uttaram) - north; पश्चिमं (paścimam) - west; तथा (tathā) - similarly;]
(O Lord, by what (means) your face, like the moon, delightful to behold, (is) in the east, likewise splendorous, (and in the) north, (and in the) west, similarly.)
O Lord, how is your face, delightful like the moon, present in the east, just so splendid in the north, and similarly in the west? (13-127-46)
दक्षिणं च मुखं रौद्रं केनोर्ध्वं कपिला जटाः। केन कण्ठश्च ते नीलो बर्हिबर्हनिभः कृतः ॥१३-१२७-४७॥
dakṣiṇaṃ ca mukhaṃ raudraṃ kenordhvaṃ kapilā jaṭāḥ। kena kaṇṭhaś ca te nīlo barhibarhanibhaḥ kṛtaḥ ॥13-127-47॥
[दक्षिणं (dakṣiṇam) - southern; च (ca) - and; मुखं (mukham) - face; रौद्रं (raudram) - fierce; केन (kena) - by whom; ऊर्ध्वं (ūrdhvam) - upwards; कपिला (kapilā) - tawny; जटाः (jaṭāḥ) - matted locks; केन (kena) - by whom; कण्ठः (kaṇṭhaḥ) - neck; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - your; नीलः (nīlaḥ) - blue; बर्हिबर्हनिभः (barhibarhanibhaḥ) - having the appearance of feathers of a tail; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - made;]
(And (your) fierce southern face, by whom (were they made)? Upwards, tawny matted locks (were made), by whom? And your neck, blue, appearing like the tail feathers, (was) made (by whom)?)
And who made your fierce southern face? By whom were your tawny matted locks upwards (arranged)? By whom was your neck made blue, resembling the tail feathers? (13-127-47)
हस्ते चैतत्पिनाकं ते सततं केन तिष्ठति। जटिलो ब्रह्मचारी च किमर्थमसि नित्यदा ॥१३-१२७-४८॥
haste cai tat pinākaṃ te satataṃ kena tiṣṭhati. jaṭilo brahmacārī ca kimartham asi nityadā ॥13-127-48॥
[हस्ते (haste) - in (your) hand; च (ca) - and; एतत् (etat) - this; पिनाकम् (pinākaṃ) - Pināka (the bow); ते (te) - your; सततम् (satataṃ) - always; केन (kena) - by what; तिष्ठति (tiṣṭhati) - remains; जटिलः (jaṭilaḥ) - matted-haired (one); ब्रह्मचारी (brahmacārī) - celibate (one); च (ca) - and; किमर्थम् (kimartham) - for what reason; असि (asi) - are (you); नित्यदा (nityadā) - always;]
(In (your) hand and this Pināka (bow) your always by what remains? Matted-haired, celibate and for what reason are (you) always?)
Why does this Pināka bow always remain in your hand? And for what reason are you always a matted-haired celibate? (13-127-48)
एतं मे संशयं सर्वं वद भूतपतेऽनघ। सधर्मचारिणी चाहं भक्ता चेति वृषध्वज ॥१३-१२७-४९॥
etaṁ me saṁśayaṁ sarvaṁ vada bhūtapate'nagha. sadharmacāriṇī cāhaṁ bhaktā ceti vṛṣadhvaja ॥13-127-49॥
[एतं (etaṁ) - this; (accusative, singular, masculine) मे (me) - my; (genitive, singular, first person pronoun) संशयं (saṁśayam) - doubt; (accusative, singular) सर्वं (sarvaṁ) - all; (accusative, singular, neuter) वद (vada) - speak; (imperative, singular, second person) भूतपते (bhūtapate) - O lord of beings; (vocative, singular) अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one; (vocative, singular) सधर्मचारिणी (sadharmacāriṇī) - one following the same dharma; (nominative, singular, feminine) च (ca) - and; अहं (ahaṁ) - I; (nominative, singular, first person pronoun) भक्ता (bhaktā) - devoted; (nominative, singular, feminine) च (ca) - and; इति (iti) - thus; वृषध्वज (vṛṣadhvaja) - O bull-bannered one; (vocative, singular, epithet of Śiva);]
(This my doubt all speak O lord of beings O sinless one. One following the same dharma and I devoted and thus O bull-bannered one (13-127-49))
O lord of beings, O sinless one, tell me all this doubt of mine. I am one who follows the same dharma, and I am devoted—thus, O Bull-bannered one. (13-127-49)
एवमुक्तः स भगवाञ्शैलपुत्र्या पिनाकधृक्। तस्या वृत्त्या च बुद्ध्या च प्रीतिमानभवत्प्रभुः ॥१३-१२७-५०॥
evam-uktaḥ sa bhagavāñ-śailaputryā pinākadhṛk। tasyā vṛttyā ca buddhyā ca prītimān abhavat prabhuḥ॥13-127-50॥
[एवमुक्तः (evam-uktaḥ) - thus addressed; स (sa) - he; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the blessed one; शैलपुत्र्या (śailaputryā) - by the daughter of the mountain; पिनाकधृक् (pinākadhṛk) - the wielder of Pināka (Śiva's bow); तस्या (tasyā) - her; वृत्त्या (vṛttyā) - by conduct; च (ca) - and; बुद्ध्या (buddhyā) - by intellect; च (ca) - and; प्रीतिमान् (prītimān) - pleased; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the Lord;]
(Thus addressed, he, the blessed one, wielder of Pināka, by the daughter of the mountain, by her conduct and by her intellect and, pleased became the Lord.)
Thus addressed by the daughter of the mountain, the blessed Lord, wielder of Pināka, became pleased with her conduct and intellect. (13-127-50)
ततस्तामब्रवीद्देवः सुभगे श्रूयतामिति। हेतुभिर्यैर्ममैतानि रूपाणि रुचिरानने ॥१३-१२७-५१॥
tatastāmabravīddevaḥ subhage śrūyatāmiti। hetubhir yair mama etāni rūpāṇi rucirānane ॥13-127-51॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ताम् (tām) - to her; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - he said; देवः (devaḥ) - the god; सुभगे (subhage) - O fortunate one; श्रूयताम् (śrūyatām) - let it be heard; इति (iti) - thus; हेतुभिः (hetubhiḥ) - by the reasons; यैः (yaiḥ) - by which; मम (mama) - my; एतानि (etāni) - these; रूपाणि (rūpāṇi) - forms; रुचिरानने (rucirānane) - O lovely-faced one;]
(Then to her the god said, "O fortunate one, let it be heard thus: by the reasons by which my these forms, O lovely-faced one.")
Then the god said to her, "O fortunate one, listen: by what causes these forms of mine (arose), O lovely-faced one." (13-127-51)
