कां तु ब्राह्मणपूजायां व्युष्टिं दृष्ट्वा जनाधिप। कं वा कर्मोदयं मत्वा तानर्चसि महामते ॥१३-१३७-१॥
kāṁ tu brāhmaṇapūjāyāṁ vyuṣṭiṁ dṛṣṭvā janādhipa। kaṁ vā karmodayam matvā tānarcasi mahāmate ॥13-137-1॥

(But, O lord of men, having seen which occasion in the worship of brāhmaṇas, or thinking of which commencement of action, do you worship them, O great-minded one?)
O lord of men, for what reason relating to the worship of brāhmaṇas, or considering what beginning of action, do you honor them, O wise one? (13-137-1)

अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम्। पवनस्य च संवादमर्जुनस्य च भारत ॥१३-१३७-२॥
atrāpy udāharantīm am itihāsaṃ purātanam। pavanasya ca saṃvādam arjunasya ca bhārata ॥13-137-2॥

सहस्रभुजभृच्छ्रीमान्कार्तवीर्योऽभवत्प्रभुः। अस्य लोकस्य सर्वस्य माहिष्मत्यां महाबलः ॥१३-१३७-३॥
sahasrabhujabhṛcchrīmānkārtavīryo'bhavatprabhuḥ। asya lokasya sarvasya māhiṣmatyāṃ mahābalaḥ ॥13-137-3॥

The illustrious Kārtavīrya, who bore a thousand arms, became the mighty lord of all this world at Māhiṣmatī. (13-137-3)
स तु रत्नाकरवतीं सद्वीपां सागराम्बराम्। शशास सर्वां पृथिवीं हैहयः सत्यविक्रमः ॥१३-१३७-४॥
sa tu ratnākara-vatīṃ sa-dvīpāṃ sāgara-ambarām। śaśāsa sarvāṃ pṛthivīṃ haihayaḥ satya-vikramaḥ ॥13-137-4॥
[स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; रत्नाकरवतीम् (ratnākara-vatīm) - having oceans (ratnākara) (i.e., possessing jewels); सद्वीपाम् (sa-dvīpām) - with islands; सागराम्बराम् (sāgara-ambarām) - whose space is occupied by seas; शशास (śaśāsa) - ruled; सर्वाम् (sarvām) - all; पृथिवीम् (pṛthivīm) - earth; हैहयः (haihayaḥ) - Haihaya (proper noun, a king from the Haihaya lineage); सत्यविक्रमः (satya-vikramaḥ) - of true valour;]
(He but the earth having oceans, with islands, whose space is occupied by seas, all, ruled Haihaya of true valour.)
But Haihaya of true valour ruled over the entire earth, possessing oceans, with islands, and whose space is covered by seas. (13-137-4)
स्ववित्तं तेन दत्तं तु दत्तात्रेयाय कारणे। क्षत्रधर्मं पुरस्कृत्य विनयं श्रुतमेव च ॥१३-१३७-५॥
svavittaṃ tena dattaṃ tu dattātreyāya kāraṇe| kṣatradharmaṃ puraskṛtya vinayaṃ śrutam eva ca ॥13-137-5॥
[स्ववित्तं (svavittam) - his own wealth; तेन (tena) - by him; दत्तं (dattam) - given; तु (tu) - but; दत्तात्रेयाय (dattātreyāya) - to Dattātreya; कारणे (kāraṇe) - for the sake (of a reason/occasion); क्षत्रधर्मं (kṣatradharmam) - kṣatriya (warrior) duty; पुरस्कृत्य (puraskṛtya) - having placed foremost; विनयं (vinayam) - humility; श्रुतम् (śrutam) - learning; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and;]
(His own wealth, by him given but to Dattatreya on occasion; kshatriya duty having placed foremost, humility, learning indeed and.)
He gave his own wealth to Dattatreya on that occasion, prioritizing the duty of a kshatriya, and also humility and learning. (13-137-5)
आराधयामास च तं कृतवीर्यात्मजो मुनिम्। न्यमन्त्रयत संहृष्टः स द्विजश्च वरैस्त्रिभिः ॥१३-१३७-६॥
ārādhayāmāsa ca taṃ kṛtavīryātmajo munim। nyamantraya ta saṃhṛṣṭaḥ sa dvijaś ca varais tribhiḥ ॥13-137-6॥
[आराधयामास (ārādhayāmāsa) - worshipped; (he) propitiated; च (ca) - and; तं (taṃ) - him; कृतवीर्यात्मजः (kṛtavīryātmajaḥ) - the son of Kṛtavīrya; मुनिम् (munim) - the sage; न्यमन्त्रयत (nyamantraya ta) - addressed; (he) invited; संहृष्टः (saṃhṛṣṭaḥ) - delighted; pleased; स (sa) - he; द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - the twice-born; the Brāhmaṇa; च (ca) - and; वरैः (varaiḥ) - with boons; त्रिभिः (tribhiḥ) - by three; with three;]
(And worshipped him the son of Kṛtavīrya, the sage. (He) addressed, delighted, he the twice-born also with three boons.)
The son of Kṛtavīrya worshipped the sage, and the delighted Brāhmaṇa addressed him, granting three boons. (13-137-6)
स वरैश्छन्दितस्तेन नृपो वचनमब्रवीत्। सहस्रबाहुर्भूयां वै चमूमध्ये गृहेऽन्यथा ॥१३-१३७-७॥
sa varaiḥ chanditasten nṛpo vacanam abravīt। sahasrabāhur bhūyāṃ vai camū-madhye gṛhe'nyathā॥13-137-7॥
[स (sa) - he; वरैः (varaiḥ) - with boons; छन्दितः (chanditaḥ) - being gratified; तेन (tena) - by him; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - king; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; सहस्रबाहुः (sahasrabāhuḥ) - having thousand arms; भूयाम् (bhūyām) - may I become; वै (vai) - indeed; चमूमध्ये (camū-madhye) - in the midst of the army; गृहे (gṛhe) - at home; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise;]
(He, gratified with boons by him, the king spoke speech: "May I become one with a thousand arms indeed in the midst of the army or otherwise at home.")
Gratified with boons by him, the king said: "May I truly become one with a thousand arms in the middle of the army or otherwise at home." (13-137-7)
मम बाहुसहस्रं तु पश्यन्तां सैनिका रणे। विक्रमेण महीं कृत्स्नां जयेयं विपुलव्रत ॥ तां च धर्मेण सम्प्राप्य पालयेयमतन्द्रितः ॥१३-१३७-८॥
mama bāhusahasraṃ tu paśyantāṃ sainikā raṇe। vikrameṇa mahīṃ kṛtsnāṃ jayeyaṃ vipulavrata ॥ tāṃ ca dharmeṇa samprāpya pālayeyam-atandritaḥ ॥13-137-8॥
[मम (mama) - my; बाहुसहस्रं (bāhu-sahasraṃ) - thousand arms; तु (tu) - indeed; पश्यन्तां (paśyantām) - may see; सैनिका (sainikāḥ) - soldiers; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; विक्रमेण (vikrameṇa) - by valor; महीं (mahīṃ) - the earth; कृत्स्नां (kṛtsnām) - entire; जयेयम् (jayeyam) - may conquer; विपुलव्रत (vipula-vrata) - one of vast vows; तां (tām) - her; च (ca) - and; धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - by righteousness; सम्प्राप्य (samprāpya) - having obtained; पालयेयम् (pālayeyam) - may protect; अतन्द्रितः (atandritaḥ) - untiring;]
(My thousand arms indeed may the soldiers in battle see; by valor the entire earth may I, one of vast vows, conquer. Her too, having obtained by righteousness, may I protect untiring.)
Let the soldiers in battle see my thousand arms; by valor I, of great resolve, may conquer the entire earth. And having obtained her by righteousness, may I guard her without weariness. (13-137-8)
चतुर्थं तु वरं याचे त्वामहं द्विजसत्तम। तं ममानुग्रहकृते दातुमर्हस्यनिन्दित ॥ अनुशासन्तु मां सन्तो मिथ्यावृत्तं तदाश्रयम् ॥१३-१३७-९॥
caturthaṃ tu varaṃ yāce tvāmahaṃ dvijasattama। taṃ mamānugrahakṛte dātumarhasyanindita ॥ anuśāsuṃtu māṃ santo mithyāvṛttaṃ tadāśrayam ॥13-137-9॥
[चतुर्थं (caturtham) - the fourth; तु (tu) - but; वरं (varaṃ) - boon; याचे (yāce) - I request; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अहम् (aham) - I; द्विजसत्तम (dvijasattama) - O best of the twice-born; तं (taṃ) - that; मम (mama) - for me; अनुग्रहकृते (anugrahakṛte) - for (the sake of) favor; दातुम् (dātum) - to grant; अर्हसि (arhasi) - (you) should; अनिन्दित (anindita) - O blameless one; अनुशासन्तु (anuśāsuṃtu) - may instruct; माम् (mām) - me; सन्तः (santaḥ) - the virtuous ones; मिथ्या-वृत्तम् (mithyāvṛttam) - of false conduct; तदाश्रयम् (tadāśrayam) - connected with that;]
(But the fourth boon I request, you, I, O best of the twice-born; that, for me, for the sake of favor, to grant, you should, O blameless one. May the virtuous ones instruct me, of false conduct, connected with that.)
But as my fourth boon, O best of the twice-born, I request you, O blameless one, to grant me this for my favor: may the virtuous instruct me when I am engaged in false conduct connected with that. (13-137-9)
इत्युक्तः स द्विजः प्राह तथास्त्विति नराधिपम्। एवं समभवंस्तस्य वरास्ते दीप्ततेजसः ॥१३-१३७-१०॥
ityuktaḥ sa dvijaḥ prāha tathāstveti narādhipam। evaṃ samabhavaṃstasya varāste dīptatejasaḥ ॥13-137-10॥

ततः स रथमास्थाय ज्वलनार्कसमद्युतिः। अब्रवीद्वीर्यसंमोहात्को न्वस्ति सदृशो मया ॥ वीर्यधैर्ययशःशौचैर्विक्रमेणौजसापि वा ॥१३-१३७-११॥
tataḥ sa ratham āsthāya jvalanārkasamadyutiḥ। abravīd vīryasaṁmohāt ko nv asti sadṛśo mayā॥ vīrya-dhairya-yaśaḥ-śaucair vikrameṇa ojasā api vā॥13-137-11॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; रथम् (ratham) - chariot; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having ascended; ज्वलनार्कसमद्युतिः (jvalanārkasamadyutiḥ) - with radiance equal to fire and sun; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; वीर्यसंमोहात् (vīryasaṁmohāt) - out of delusion of strength; कः (kaḥ) - who; नु (nu) - indeed; अस्ति (asti) - is; सदृशः (sadṛśaḥ) - equal; मया (mayā) - to me; वीर्यधैर्ययशःशौचैः (vīrya-dhairya-yaśaḥ-śaucaiḥ) - by strength, courage, fame, purity; विक्रमेण (vikrameṇa) - by valor; औजसा (ojasā) - by energy; अपि (api) - even; वा (vā) - or;]
(Then he, having ascended the chariot, with radiance equal to fire and sun, said out of delusion of strength: "Who indeed is equal to me by strength, courage, fame, purity, by valor, or even by energy?" (13-137-11))

तद्वाक्यान्ते चान्तरिक्षे वागुवाचाशरीरिणी। न त्वं मूढ विजानीषे ब्राह्मणं क्षत्रियाद्वरम् ॥ सहितो ब्राह्मणेनेह क्षत्रियो रक्षति प्रजाः ॥१३-१३७-१२॥
tadvākyānte cāntarikṣe vāguvāca aśarīriṇī। na tvaṃ mūḍha vijānīṣe brāhmaṇaṃ kṣatriyād varam॥ sahito brāhmaṇena iha kṣatriyaḥ rakṣati prajāḥ॥13-137-12॥

(At the end of that speech, and in the sky, a bodiless voice spoke: "You do not understand, deluded one, that the Brāhmaṇa is superior to the Kṣatriya. Together with the Brāhmaṇa here, the Kṣatriya protects the subjects." (13-137-12))
At the end of that speech, a bodiless voice in the sky said: "You do not understand, O deluded one, that the Brāhmaṇa is superior to the Kṣatriya. Here, with the Brāhmaṇa, the Kṣatriya protects the people." (13-137-12)

कुर्यां भूतानि तुष्टोऽहं क्रुद्धो नाशं तथा नये। कर्मणा मनसा वाचा न मत्तोऽस्ति वरो द्विजः ॥१३-१३७-१३॥
kuryāṃ bhūtāni tuṣṭo'ham kruddho nāśaṃ tathā naye। karmaṇā manasā vācā na matto'sti varo dvijaḥ॥13-137-13॥

(I may do beings (when) pleased I, (when) angered destruction also I bring. By action, by mind, by speech, not than me is superior twice-born.)
When I am pleased, I may do good to beings; when angered, I bring about their destruction as well. By action, by mind, and by speech, O twice-born, there is none superior to me. (13-137-13)
पूर्वो ब्रह्मोत्तरो वादो द्वितीयः क्षत्रियोत्तरः। त्वयोक्तौ यौ तु तौ हेतू विशेषस्त्वत्र दृश्यते ॥१३-१३७-१४॥
pūrvo brahmottaro vādo dvitīyaḥ kṣatriyottaraḥ। tvayoktau yau tu tau hetū viśeṣas tvatra dṛśyate ॥13-137-14॥
[पूर्वः (pūrvaḥ) - former; earlier; ब्रह्मोत्तरः (brahmottaraḥ) - ending with Brahman; concluded by Brahman; वादः (vādaḥ) - argument; discussion; द्वितीयः (dvitīyaḥ) - second; the second; क्षत्रियोत्तरः (kṣatriyottaraḥ) - ending with Kshatriya; concluded by Kshatriya; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; उक्तौ (uktau) - have been stated; have been spoken; यौ (yau) - which two; both; तु (tu) - however; but; तौ (tau) - those two; हेतू (hetū) - reasons; causes; विशेषः (viśeṣaḥ) - distinction; special feature; तु (tu) - however; but; अत्र (atra) - here; दृश्यते (dṛśyate) - is seen; is observed;]
(The former argument concluded by Brahman, the second concluded by Kshatriya, have been stated by you; those two, however, their reasons, however, here distinction is seen.)
The earlier argument ended with Brahman, and the second with Kshatriya, have been spoken by you; however, a distinction between the reasons for those two is observed here. (13-137-14)
ब्राह्मणाः संश्रिताः क्षत्रं न क्षत्रं ब्राह्मणाश्रितम्। श्रितान्ब्रह्मोपधा विप्राः खादन्ति क्षत्रियान्भुवि ॥१३-१३७-१५॥
brāhmaṇāḥ saṃśritāḥ kṣatraṃ na kṣatraṃ brāhmaṇāśritam। śritān brahmopadhā viprāḥ khā danti kṣatriyān bhuvi॥13-137-15॥
[ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; संश्रिताः (saṃśritāḥ) - having taken shelter; क्षत्रं (kṣatram) - the kṣatriya class; न (na) - not; क्षत्रं (kṣatram) - kṣatriya class; ब्राह्मणाश्रितम् (brāhmaṇa-āśritam) - sheltered by Brāhmaṇas; श्रितान् (śritān) - those who have taken refuge; ब्रह्मोपधा (brahma-upadhā) - by the counsel (or device) of Brahma; विप्राः (viprāḥ) - the wise, Brāhmaṇas; खादन्ति (khādanti) - devour; क्षत्रियान् (kṣatriyān) - Kṣatriyas; भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth;]
(Brāhmaṇas, having taken shelter of the kṣatriya class, not the kṣatriya class sheltered by Brāhmaṇas. Those who have taken refuge by the device of Brahma, Brāhmaṇas devour Kṣatriyas on earth.)
Brāhmaṇas who take refuge in the kṣatriya class, and not the kṣatriyas sheltered by Brāhmaṇas. Brāhmaṇas, by means of Brahma's counsel, destroy kṣatriyas on earth who seek their protection. (13-137-15)
क्षत्रियेष्वाश्रितो धर्मः प्रजानां परिपालनम्। क्षत्राद्वृत्तिर्ब्राह्मणानां तैः कथं ब्राह्मणो वरः ॥१३-१३७-१६॥
kṣatriyeṣvāśrito dharmaḥ prajānāṃ paripālanam। kṣatrādvṛttirbrāhmaṇānāṃ taiḥ kathaṃ brāhmaṇo varaḥ ॥13-137-16॥

(In the kṣatriyas established is duty: protection of the subjects. From kṣatriya, livelihood of brāhmaṇas; by them, how is a brāhmaṇa superior?)
The duty established among kṣatriyas is the protection of the subjects. The livelihood of the brāhmaṇas comes from the kṣatriyas; by that, how is a brāhmaṇa superior? (13-137-16)
सर्वभूतप्रधानांस्तान्भैक्षवृत्तीनहं सदा। आत्मसम्भावितान्विप्रान्स्थापयाम्यात्मनो वशे ॥१३-१३७-१७॥
sarvabhūtapradhānāṁstān bhaikṣavṛttīn ahaṁ sadā। ātmasambhāvitān viprān sthāpayāmy ātmano vaśe ॥13-137-17॥
[सर्वभूतप्रधानान् (sarvabhūtapradhānān) - foremost among all beings; तान् (tān) - those; भैक्षवृत्तीन् (bhaikṣavṛttīn) - who have mendicant conduct; अहम् (aham) - I; सदा (sadā) - always; आत्मसम्भावितान् (ātmasambhāvitān) - self-respecting; विप्रान् (viprān) - Brāhmaṇas; स्थापयामि (sthāpayāmi) - I establish; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of myself; वशे (vaśe) - under control;]
(Foremost among all beings, those who have mendicant conduct, I always; self-respecting Brāhmaṇas, I establish under control of myself.)
I always bring under my control those Brāhmaṇas who are the foremost among all beings, who maintain themselves by mendicant ways, and who are self-respecting. (13-137-17)
कथितं ह्यनया सत्यं गायत्र्या कन्यया दिवि। विजेष्याम्यवशान्सर्वान्ब्राह्मणांश्चर्मवाससः ॥१३-१३७-१८॥
kathitaṃ hyanayā satyaṃ gāyatr yā kanyayā divi। vijeṣyāmyavaśānsarvānbrāhmaṇāṃścarmavāsasaḥ ॥13-137-18॥
[कथितं (kathitam) - spoken; हि (hi) - indeed; अनया (anayā) - by her; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; गायत्र्या (gāyatyā) - by Gāyatrī; कन्यया (kanyayā) - the maiden; दिवि (divi) - in heaven; विजेष्यामि (vijeṣyāmi) - I will conquer; अवशान् (avaśān) - powerless ones; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; ब्राह्मणान् (brāhmaṇān) - the Brāhmaṇas; चर्मवाससः (carmavāsasaḥ) - clad in hide;]
(Spoken indeed by her is the truth, by Gāyatrī, the maiden in heaven. I will conquer all the powerless Brāhmaṇas clad in hide.)
Indeed, this truth has been spoken by her, by Gāyatrī, the maiden in heaven: I will conquer all the powerless Brāhmaṇas who are clad in hide. (13-137-18)
न च मां च्यावयेद्राष्ट्रात्त्रिषु लोकेषु कश्चन। देवो वा मानुषो वापि तस्माज्ज्येष्ठो द्विजादहम् ॥१३-१३७-१९॥
na ca māṃ cyāvayet rāṣṭrāt triṣu lokeṣu kaścana। devo vā mānuṣo vā api tasmāt jyeṣṭhaḥ dvijāt aham ॥13-137-19॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; माम् (mām) - me; च्यावयेत् (cyāvayet) - could remove; राष्ट्रात् (rāṣṭrāt) - from the kingdom; त्रिषु (triṣu) - in the three; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - worlds; कश्चन (kaścana) - anyone; देवः (devaḥ) - god; वा (vā) - or; मानुषः (mānuṣaḥ) - man; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; ज्येष्ठः (jyeṣṭhaḥ) - eldest; द्विजात् (dvijāt) - than the twice-born; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(And not anyone could remove me from the kingdom in the three worlds, god or man even; therefore, I am eldest than the twice-born.)
No one in the three worlds—god or man—could remove me from the kingdom; therefore, I am the eldest among the twice-born. (13-137-19)
अद्य ब्रह्मोत्तरं लोकं करिष्ये क्षत्रियोत्तरम्। न हि मे संयुगे कश्चित्सोढुमुत्सहते बलम् ॥१३-१३७-२०॥
adya brahmottaraṃ lokaṃ kariṣye kṣatriyottaram। na hi me saṃyuge kaścit soḍhum utsahate balam ॥13-137-20॥
[अद्य (adya) - today; ब्रह्मोत्तरं (brahmottaram) - higher than the brāhmaṇa (brahman); लोकं (lokaṃ) - world; करिष्ये (kariṣye) - I will make; क्षत्रियोत्तरम् (kṣatriyottaram) - higher than the kṣatriya; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (me) - my; संयुगे (saṃyuge) - in battle; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; सोढुम् (soḍhum) - to withstand; उत्सहते (utsahate) - is able; बलम् (balam) - strength;]
(Today, I will make the world, higher than the brāhmaṇa, higher than the kṣatriya. For indeed, in battle, no one is able to withstand my strength.)
Today, I will make the world regard the kṣatriya as greater than the brāhmaṇa. For indeed, in battle, no one is able to withstand my strength. (13-137-20)
अर्जुनस्य वचः श्रुत्वा वित्रस्ताभून्निशाचरी। अथैनमन्तरिक्षस्थस्ततो वायुरभाषत ॥१३-१३७-२१॥
arjunasya vacaḥ śrutvā vitrastābhūnniśācarī। athainamantarikṣasthastato vāyurabhāṣata ॥13-137-21॥
[अर्जुनस्य (arjunasya) - of Arjuna; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; वित्रस्ता (vitrastā) - frightened; अभूत् (abhūt) - became; निशाचरी (niśācarī) - the female night-wanderer (rakṣasī); अथ (atha) - then; एनम् (enam) - him; अन्तरिक्षस्थः (antarikṣasthaḥ) - standing in the sky; ततः (tataḥ) - then; वायुः (vāyuḥ) - Vāyu (the Wind-god); अबाषत (abhāṣata) - spoke;]
(Of Arjuna the words having heard, frightened became the night-wanderer; then him standing in the sky, then Vāyu spoke.)
Hearing the words of Arjuna, the night-wanderer became frightened; then, as he stood in the sky, Vāyu spoke to him. (13-137-21)
त्यजैनं कलुषं भावं ब्राह्मणेभ्यो नमस्कुरु। एतेषां कुर्वतः पापं राष्ट्रक्षोभो हि ते भवेत् ॥१३-१३७-२२॥
tyajainam kaluṣaṃ bhāvaṃ brāhmaṇebhyo namaskuru | eteṣāṃ kurvataḥ pāpaṃ rāṣṭrakṣobho hi te bhavet ||13-137-22||
[त्यज (tyaja) - abandon; एनं (enam) - this; कलुषं (kaluṣam) - impure; भावं (bhāvam) - feeling; ब्राह्मणेभ्यः (brāhmaṇebhyaḥ) - to the Brāhmaṇas; नमस्कुरु (namaskuru) - offer obeisance; एतेषां (eteṣām) - of these; कुर्वतः (kurvataḥ) - of the one doing; पापं (pāpam) - sin; राष्ट्रक्षोभः (rāṣṭrakṣobhaḥ) - disturbance of the kingdom; हि (hi) - indeed; ते (te) - to you; भवेत् (bhavet) - will arise;]
(Abandon this impure feeling, to the Brāhmaṇas offer obeisance. Of him committing sin against these, disturbance of the kingdom indeed will arise to you. (13-137-22))
Abandon this impure feeling and offer obeisance to the Brāhmaṇas. If one commits a sin against them, a disturbance of the kingdom will surely arise for you. (13-137-22)
अथ वा त्वां महीपाल शमयिष्यन्ति वै द्विजाः। निरसिष्यन्ति वा राष्ट्राद्धतोत्साहं महाबलाः ॥१३-१३७-२३॥
atha vā tvāṃ mahīpāla śamayiṣyanti vai dvijāḥ। nirasīṣyanti vā rāṣṭrād dhatotsāhaṃ mahābalāḥ॥13-137-23॥
[अथ (atha) - now; then; or; but; वा (vā) - or; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; महीपाल (mahīpāla) - king; शमयिष्यन्ति (śamayiṣyanti) - will pacify; will subdue; वै (vai) - indeed; द्विजाः (dvijāḥ) - the twice-born; Brahmins; निरसिष्यन्ति (nirasīṣyanti) - will expel; will drive out; वा (vā) - or; राष्ट्रात् (rāṣṭrāt) - from the kingdom; from the realm; हतोत्साहं (hata-utsāham) - having your energy destroyed; dispirited; महाबलाः (mahābalāḥ) - the very strong; the mighty;]
(Now, or, you, king, will be pacified, indeed, by the Brahmins; or will be expelled from the kingdom, having your energy destroyed, by the mighty.)
Now, O king, either the Brahmins will pacify you, or the mighty ones will expel you from the kingdom after your spirit is broken. (13-137-23)
तं राजा कस्त्वमित्याह ततस्तं प्राह मारुतः। वायुर्वै देवदूतोऽस्मि हितं त्वां प्रब्रवीम्यहम् ॥१३-१३७-२४॥
taṃ rājā kastvamityāha tatastaṃ prāha mārutaḥ। vāyurvai devadūto'smi hitaṃ tvāṃ prabravīmyaham॥13-137-24॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; राजा (rājā) - king; कः (kaḥ) - who; त्वम् (tvam) - you; इति (iti) - thus; आह (āha) - said; ततः (tataḥ) - then; तं (taṃ) - him; प्राह (prāha) - spoke; मारुतः (mārutaḥ) - Marut (wind-god); वायुः (vāyuḥ) - Vāyu (wind); वै (vai) - indeed; देवदूतः (devadūtaḥ) - messenger of the gods; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; हितम् (hitam) - benefit; त्वाम् (tvām) - to you; प्रब्रवीमि (prabravīmi) - I declare; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(Him the king "Who are you?" thus said. Then him spoke Marut: Vāyu indeed, gods' messenger I am; benefit to you I declare I.)
The king said to him, "Who are you?" Then Marut replied to him: "I am Vāyu, the messenger of the gods; I declare what is beneficial to you." (13-137-24)
अर्जुन उवाच॥

Arjuna said.
अहो त्वयाद्य विप्रेषु भक्तिरागः प्रदर्शितः। यादृशं पृथिवी भूतं तादृशं ब्रूहि वै द्विजम् ॥१३-१३७-२५॥
aho tvayā adya vipreṣu bhaktirāgaḥ pradarśitaḥ। yādṛśaṃ pṛthivī bhūtaṃ tādṛśaṃ brūhi vai dvijam ॥13-137-25॥
[अहो (aho) - ah; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; अद्य (adya) - today; विप्रेषु (vipreṣu) - in Brāhmaṇas; भक्तिरागः (bhaktirāgaḥ) - devotional attachment; प्रदर्शितः (pradarśitaḥ) - has been shown; यादृशं (yādṛśaṃ) - of what sort; पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - earth; भूतं (bhūtaṃ) - being; तादृशं (tādṛśaṃ) - such as that; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - speak; वै (vai) - indeed; द्विजम् (dvijam) - twice-born (Brāhmaṇa);]
(Ah, by you today in Brāhmaṇas devotional attachment has been shown. Of what sort being of earth, such speak indeed the twice-born.)
Ah! Today you have shown such devotion to the Brāhmaṇas. Tell me, O twice-born, what kind of being on earth that is like this. (13-137-25)
वायोर्वा सदृशं किञ्चिद्ब्रूहि त्वं ब्राह्मणोत्तमम्। अपां वै सदृशं ब्रूहि सूर्यस्य नभसोऽपि वा ॥१३-१३७-२६॥
vāyor vā sadṛśaṃ kiñcid brūhi tvaṃ brāhmaṇottamam| apāṃ vai sadṛśaṃ brūhi sūryasya nabhaso'pi vā ||13-137-26||
[वायोः (vāyoḥ) - of wind; वा (vā) - or; सदृशं (sadṛśam) - similar; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - speak; त्वम् (tvam) - you; ब्राह्मणोत्तमम् (brāhmaṇottamam) - O foremost of Brahmins; अपाम् (apām) - of waters; वै (vai) - indeed; सदृशं (sadṛśam) - similar; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - speak; सूर्यस्य (sūryasya) - of the Sun; नभसः (nabhasaḥ) - of the sky; अपि (api) - also; वा (vā) - or;]
(Of wind or similar anything speak you O foremost of Brahmins. Of waters indeed similar speak of the Sun of sky also or. (13-137-26))
O foremost of Brahmins, tell (me) if there is anything similar to the wind, or tell if there is anything similar to water, or to the Sun, or to the sky. (13-137-26)
