शृणु मूढ गुणान्कांश्चिद्ब्राह्मणानां महात्मनाम्। ये त्वया कीर्तिता राजंस्तेभ्योऽथ ब्राह्मणो वरः ॥१३-१३८-१॥
śṛṇu mūḍha guṇān kāṃścid brāhmaṇānāṃ mahātmanām। ye tvayā kīrtitā rājan tebhyo 'tha brāhmaṇo varaḥ॥13-138-1॥
[शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; मूढ (mūḍha) - foolish one; गुणान् (guṇān) - qualities; कांश्चित् (kāṃścid) - certain; ब्राह्मणानाम् (brāhmaṇānām) - of the brāhmaṇas; महात्मनाम् (mahātmanām) - of great souls; ये (ye) - who; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; कीर्तिताः (kīrtitāḥ) - have been mentioned; राजन् (rājan) - O king; तेभ्यः (tebhyaḥ) - among them; अथ (atha) - thereafter; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - a brāhmaṇa; वरः (varaḥ) - the best;]
(Hear, O foolish one, certain qualities of brāhmaṇas who are great-souled; who by you have been mentioned, O king, among them, then, the brāhmaṇa is the best.)
O foolish one, listen to certain qualities of the great-souled brāhmaṇas. Of those brāhmaṇas mentioned by you, O king, the brāhmaṇa is the best among them. (13-138-1)
त्यक्त्वा महीत्वं भूमिस्तु स्पर्धयाङ्गनृपस्य ह। नाशं जगाम तां विप्रो व्यष्टम्भयत कश्यपः ॥१३-१३८-२॥
tyaktvā mahītvam bhūmis tu spardhayāṅganṛpasya ha। nāśaṃ jagāma tāṃ vipro vyaṣṭambhayata kaśyapaḥ॥13-138-2॥
[त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - having abandoned;, महीत्वं (mahītvam) - sovereignty (over the earth);, भूमिः (bhūmiḥ) - the earth;, तु (tu) - but;, स्पर्धया (spardhayā) - from rivalry;, अङ्गनृपस्य (aṅganṛpasya) - of King Aṅga;, ह (ha) - indeed;, नाशं (nāśam) - destruction;, जगाम (jagāma) - went;, तां (tām) - her;, विप्रः (vipraḥ) - the brāhmaṇa;, व्यष्टम्भयत् (vyaṣṭambhayat) - sustained;, कश्यपः (kaśyapaḥ) - Kaśyapa;]
(Having abandoned sovereignty, the earth, indeed because of rivalry with King Aṅga, went to destruction; that (earth) the brāhmaṇa Kaśyapa sustained.)
After abandoning sovereignty, the earth, because of rivalry with King Aṅga, began to perish; the brāhmaṇa Kaśyapa upheld her. (13-138-2)
अक्षया ब्राह्मणा राजन्दिवि चेह च नित्यदा। अपिबत्तेजसा ह्यापः स्वयमेवाङ्गिराः पुरा ॥१३-१३८-३॥
akṣayā brāhmaṇā rājan divi ca iha ca nityadā। apibat tejasā hi āpaḥ svayam eva āṅgirāḥ purā॥13-138-3॥
[अक्षया (akṣayā) - undecaying; ब्राह्मणा (brāhmaṇā) - by the Brāhmaṇa; राजन् (rājan) - O king; दिवि (divi) - in heaven; च (ca) - and; इह (iha) - here; च (ca) - and; नित्यदा (nityadā) - always; अपिबत् (apibat) - drank; तेजसा (tejasā) - by (his) energy; हि (hi) - indeed; आपः (āpaḥ) - waters; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself; एव (eva) - indeed; आङ्गिराः (āṅgirāḥ) - Aṅgiras; पुरा (purā) - formerly;]
(Undecaying by the Brāhmaṇa, O king, in heaven and here always; (he) drank by energy indeed waters, himself indeed Aṅgiras formerly.)
O king, the Brāhmaṇa was undecaying both in heaven and here, always; formerly, Aṅgiras himself drank the waters by his energy indeed. (13-138-3)
स ताः पिबन्क्षीरमिव नातृप्यत महातपाः। अपूरयन्महौघेन महीं सर्वां च पार्थिव ॥१३-१३८-४॥
sa tāḥ pibankṣīramiva nātṛpyata mahātapāḥ। apūrayanmohaughena mahīṃ sarvāṃ ca pārthiva ॥13-138-4॥
[स (sa) - he; ताः (tāḥ) - them; पिबन् (piban) - drinking; क्षीरम्-इव (kṣīram-iva) - milk-like; न अतृप्यत (na atṛpyata) - did not become satisfied; महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - the great ascetic; अपूरयन् (apūrayān) - filled; महौघेन (mahaughena) - with a great torrent; महीं (mahīm) - the earth; सर्वां (sarvām) - entire; च (ca) - and; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king;]
(He, drinking them like milk, the great ascetic did not become satisfied; filling the entire earth with a great torrent and, O king.)
He, O king, the great ascetic drank them like milk and was never satisfied; with a great torrent, he filled the entire earth. (13-138-4)
तस्मिन्नहं च क्रुद्धे वै जगत्त्यक्त्वा ततो गतः। व्यतिष्ठमग्निहोत्रे च चिरमङ्गिरसो भयात् ॥१३-१३८-५॥
tasminnahaṃ ca kruddhe vai jagattyaktvā tato gataḥ। vyatiṣṭhamagnihotre ca ciramaṅgiraso bhayāt॥13-138-5॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in him;, अहं (ahaṃ) - I;, च (ca) - and;, क्रुद्धे (kruddhe) - enraged;, वै (vai) - indeed;, जगत् (jagat) - the world;, त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - having abandoned;, ततः (tataḥ) - from there;, गतः (gataḥ) - gone;, व्यतिष्ठम् (vyatiṣṭham) - I remained;, अग्निहोत्रे (agnihotre) - at the fire-sacrifice;, च (ca) - and;, चिरम् (ciram) - for a long time;, अङ्गिरसः (aṅgirasaḥ) - the Aṅgirases;, भयात् (bhayāt) - out of fear;]
(In him, I and (when) enraged indeed, having abandoned the world, from there gone; I remained at the fire-sacrifice also, for a long time, (the) Aṅgirases out of fear.)
When he was enraged, I, having abandoned the world, left from there; out of fear, I remained with the Aṅgirases at the fire-sacrifice for a long time. (13-138-5)
अभिशप्तश्च भगवान्गौतमेन पुरandarः। अहल्यां कामयानो वै धर्मार्थं च न हिंसितः ॥१३-१३८-६॥
abhiśaptaś ca bhagavān gautamena puraṁdaraḥ। ahalyāṁ kāmayānaḥ vai dharmārthaṁ ca na hiṁsitaḥ॥13-138-6॥
[अभिशप्तः (abhiśaptaḥ) - cursed; च (ca) - and; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Lord; गौतमेन (gautamena) - by Gautama; पुरंदरः (puraṁdaraḥ) - Puraṁdara (Indra); अहल्याम् (ahalyām) - Ahalyā; कामयानः (kāmayānaḥ) - desiring (her); वै (vai) - indeed; धर्मार्थम् (dharmārtham) - for the sake of righteousness; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; हिंसितः (hiṁsitaḥ) - harmed;]
(And Puraṁdara (Indra), the Lord, cursed by Gautama, indeed desiring Ahalyā, but for the sake of righteousness, and was not harmed.)
And Puraṁdara (Indra), the Lord, was cursed by Gautama; desiring Ahalyā, indeed, but for the sake of righteousness, he was not harmed. (13-138-6)
तथा समुद्रो नृपते पूर्णो मृष्टेन वारिणा। ब्राह्मणैरभिशप्तः सँल्लवणोदः कृतो विभो ॥१३-१३८-७॥
tathā samudro nṛpate pūrṇo mṛṣṭena vāriṇā। brāhmaṇair abhiśaptaḥ saṃ-lavaṇodaḥ kṛto vibho ॥13-138-7॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; समुद्रः (samudraḥ) - the ocean; नृपते (nṛpate) - O king; पूर्णः (pūrṇaḥ) - filled; मृष्टेन (mṛṣṭena) - pure; वारिणा (vāriṇā) - with water; ब्राह्मणैः (brāhmaṇaiḥ) - by the brāhmaṇas; अभिशप्तः (abhiśaptaḥ) - cursed; सँल्लवणोदः (saṃ-lavaṇodaḥ) - (having become) entirely saline-water; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - made; विभो (vibho) - O majestic one;]
(Thus, the ocean, O king, filled with pure water, by the brāhmaṇas cursed, was made entirely saline-water, O majestic one.)
Thus, O king, the ocean, which was once filled with pure water, was made entirely saline by the curse of the brāhmaṇas, O majestic one. (13-138-7)
सुवर्णवर्णो निर्धूमः संहतोर्ध्वशिखः कविः। क्रुद्धेनाङ्गिरसा शप्तो गुणैरेतैर्विवर्जितः ॥१३-१३८-८॥
suvarṇavarṇo nirdhūmaḥ saṃhatordhvaśikhaḥ kaviḥ। kruddhenāṅgirasā śapto guṇairetairvivarjitaḥ ॥13-138-8॥
[सुवर्णवर्णः (suvarṇavarṇaḥ) - of golden color; निर्धूमः (nirdhūmaḥ) - smokeless; संहत-ऊर्ध्व-शिखः (saṃhata-ūrdhva-śikhaḥ) - having united upward flames; कविः (kaviḥ) - wise one; क्रुद्धेन (kruddhena) - by the angered; अङ्गिरसा (aṅgirasā) - by Aṅgiras; शप्तः (śaptaḥ) - cursed; गुणैः (guṇaiḥ) - by the qualities; एतैः (etaiḥ) - these; विवर्जितः (vivarjitaḥ) - deprived of;]
(Of golden color, smokeless, having united upward flames, wise; having been cursed by the angered Aṅgiras, deprived of these qualities.)

मरुतश्चूर्णितान्पश्य येऽहसन्त महोदधिम्। सुवर्णधारिणा नित्यमवशप्ता द्विजातिना ॥१३-१३८-९॥
marutaś cūrṇitān paśya ye 'hasanta mahodadhim। suvarṇadhāriṇā nityam avaśaptā dvijātinā॥13-138-9॥
[मरुतः (marutaḥ) - winds; चूर्णितान् (cūrṇitān) - crushed; पश्य (paśya) - see; ये (ye) - who; अहसन्त (ahasanta) - laughed at; महोदधिम् (mahodadhim) - great ocean; सुवर्णधारिणा (suvarṇadhāriṇā) - by the wearer of gold; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; अवशप्ता (avaśaptā) - cursed; द्विजातिना (dvijātinā) - by the twice-born;]

समो न त्वं द्विजातिभ्यः श्रेष्ठं विद्धि नराधिप। गर्भस्थान्ब्राह्मणान्सम्यङ्नमस्यति किल प्रभुः ॥१३-१३८-१०॥
samo na tvaṃ dvijātibhyaḥ śreṣṭhaṃ viddhi narādhipa। garbhasthānbrāhmaṇānsamyaṅnamasyati kila prabhuḥ॥13-138-10॥
[समः (samaḥ) - equal; न (na) - not; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; द्विजातिभ्यः (dvijātibhyaḥ) - to the twice-born castes; श्रेष्ठम् (śreṣṭham) - superior; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O ruler of men; गर्भस्थान् (garbhasthān) - those dwelling in the womb; ब्राह्मणान् (brāhmaṇān) - Brahmins; सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; नमस्यति (namasyati) - bows to; किल (kila) - indeed; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the Lord;]
(Equal not you to the twice-born castes, superior know, O ruler of men. Those dwelling in the womb, the Brahmins, the Lord indeed properly bows to.)
O ruler of men, know that you are not equal or superior to the twice-born; indeed, the Lord Himself properly bows to the Brahmins even when they are dwelling in the womb. (13-138-10)
दण्डकानां महद्राज्यं ब्राह्मणेन विनाशितम्। तालजङ्घं महत्क्षत्रमौर्वेणैकेन नाशितम् ॥१३-१३८-११॥
daṇḍakānāṃ mahadraajyaṃ brāhmaṇena vināśitam। tālajaṅghaṃ mahatkṣatram aurveṇaikena nāśitam ॥13-138-11॥
[दण्डकानां (daṇḍakānāṃ) - of the Daṇḍakas; महद्राज्यं (mahad-rājyam) - great kingdom; ब्राह्मणेन (brāhmaṇena) - by a brāhmaṇa; विनाशितम् (vināśitam) - was destroyed; तालजङ्घं (tālajaṅgham) - the Tāla-jaṅgha; महत्क्षत्रम् (mahat-kṣatram) - great kṣatriya (warrior class); और्वेणैकेन (aurveṇa ikena) - by Aurva (the sage), by one (person); नाशितम् (nāśitam) - was destroyed;]
(The great kingdom of the Daṇḍakas was destroyed by a brāhmaṇa. The great Tāla-jaṅgha kṣatriyas were destroyed by one, Aurva.)
The great kingdom of the Daṇḍakas was destroyed by a brāhmaṇa. The powerful Tāla-jaṅgha kṣatriya lineage was destroyed by Aurva alone. (13-138-11)
त्वया च विपुलं राज्यं बलं धर्मः श्रुतं तथा। दत्तात्रेयप्रसादेन प्राप्तं परमदुर्लभम् ॥१३-१३८-१२॥
tvayā ca vipulaṃ rājyaṃ balaṃ dharmaḥ śrutaṃ tathā. dattātreya-prasādena prāptaṃ paramadurlabham ॥13-138-12॥
[त्वया (tvayā) - by you; च (ca) - and; विपुलं (vipulaṃ) - extensive; राज्यं (rājyaṃ) - kingdom; बलं (balaṃ) - strength; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; श्रुतं (śrutam) - learning; तथा (tathā) - also; दत्तात्रेयप्रसादेन (dattātreya-prasādena) - by the grace of Dattatreya; प्राप्तं (prāptam) - obtained; परमदुर्लभम् (paramadurlabham) - extremely rare;]
(By you and extensive kingdom, strength, dharma, learning also, by the grace of Dattatreya, obtained, extremely rare.)
You have obtained an extensive kingdom, strength, dharma, and learning—all of which are extremely rare—by the grace of Dattatreya. (13-138-12)
अग्निं त्वं यजसे नित्यं कस्मादर्जुन ब्राह्मणम्। स हि सर्वस्य लोकस्य हव्यवाट्किं न वेत्सि तम् ॥१३-१३८-१३॥
agniṁ tvaṁ yajase nityaṁ kasmād arjuna brāhmaṇam। sa hi sarvasya lokasya havyavāṭ kiṁ na vetsi tam ॥13-138-13॥
[अग्निं (agniṁ) - Agni; (the fire); त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; यजसे (yajase) - worship (offer sacrifice); नित्यं (nityaṁ) - always; कस्माद् (kasmād) - why; अर्जुन (arjuna) - Arjuna; ब्राह्मणम् (brāhmaṇam) - the Brahmin; सः (saḥ) - he; हि (hi) - indeed; सर्वस्य (sarvasya) - of all; लोकस्य (lokasya) - of the world; हव्यवाट् (havyavāṭ) - acceptor of oblations; किं (kiṁ) - why; न (na) - not; वेत्सि (vetsi) - you know; तम् (tam) - him;]
(Agni you worship always; why, Arjuna, the Brahmin? He indeed of all the world the acceptor of oblations; why do you not know him?)
You always worship Agni, but why, Arjuna, do you not honor the Brahmin? He indeed is the acceptor of oblations for the whole world; do you not know him? (13-138-13)
अथ वा ब्राह्मणश्रेष्ठमनु भूतानुपालकम्। कर्तारं जीवलोकस्य कस्माज्जानन्विमुह्यसे ॥१३-१३८-१४॥
atha vā brāhmaṇaśreṣṭham anu bhūtānupālakam। kartāraṃ jīvalokasya kasmāj jānan vimuhyase ॥13-138-14॥
[अथ (atha) - now; then; वा (vā) - or; ब्राह्मणश्रेष्ठम् (brāhmaṇaśreṣṭham) - the best of Brāhmaṇas; अनु (anu) - after; following; भूतानुपालकम् (bhūtānupālakam) - protector of beings; कर्तारम् (kartāram) - creator; doer; जीवलोकस्य (jīvalokasya) - of the world of living beings; कस्मात् (kasmāt) - why; जानन् (jānan) - knowing; विमुह्यसे (vimuhyase) - are you confused;]
(Now or, the best of Brāhmaṇas, after (i.e., following) the protector of beings, the creator of the world of living beings, why knowing, are you confused?)
Now then, O best of Brāhmaṇas, knowing that the protector and creator of the world of living beings exists, why are you confused? (13-138-14)
तथा प्रजापतिर्ब्रह्मा अव्यक्तः प्रभवाप्ययः। येनेदं निखिलं विश्वं जनितं स्थावरं चरम् ॥१३-१३८-१५॥
tathā prajāpatir brahmā avyaktaḥ prabhavāpyayaḥ। yena idaṃ nikhilaṃ viśvaṃ janitaṃ sthāvaraṃ caram ॥13-138-15॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; प्रजापतिः (prajāpatiḥ) - the lord of creatures; ब्रह्मा (brahmā) - Brahmā; अव्यक्तः (avyaktaḥ) - unmanifest; प्रभवाप्ययः (prabhavāpyayaḥ) - source and dissolution; येन (yena) - by whom; इदं (idaṃ) - this; निखिलं (nikhilaṃ) - entire; विश्वं (viśvam) - universe; जनितं (janitaṃ) - created; स्थावरं (sthāvaram) - immobile; चरम् (caram) - mobile;]
(Thus, Prajāpati Brahmā, the unmanifest, the source and dissolution, by whom this entire universe—created, immobile and mobile.)
Thus, Prajāpati Brahmā—unmanifest, the source and dissolution—is he by whom this whole universe of the moving and the unmoving is created. (13-138-15)
अण्डजातं तु ब्रह्माणं केचिदिच्छन्त्यपण्डिताः। अण्डाद्भिन्नाद्बभुः शैला दिशोऽम्भः पृथिवी दिवम् ॥१३-१३८-१६॥
aṇḍajātaṃ tu brahmāṇaṃ kecidicchantyapaṇḍitāḥ. aṇḍādbhinnādbabhuḥ śailā diśo'mbhaḥ pṛthivī divam ॥13-138-16॥
[अण्डजातम् (aṇḍajātam) - born from an egg; तु (tu) - but; ब्रह्माणम् (brahmāṇam) - the creator (Brahmā); केचित् (kecit) - some; इच्छन्ति (icchanti) - desire; अपण्डिताः (apaṇḍitāḥ) - unwise (persons); अण्डात् (aṇḍāt) - from the egg; भिन्नात् (bhinnāt) - split; बभुः (babhuḥ) - arose; शैला (śailā) - mountains; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; अम्भः (ambhaḥ) - waters; पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - earth; दिवम् (divam) - heaven (sky);]
(Born from egg but the creator some desire, unwise (persons); from the split egg arose mountains, directions, waters, earth, heaven.)
But some unwise persons wish for the creator (Brahmā) to be born from an egg; from the split egg arose the mountains, directions, waters, earth, and heaven. (13-138-16)
द्रष्टव्यं नैतदेवं हि कथं ज्यायस्तमो हि सः। स्मृतमाकाशमण्डं तु तस्माज्जातः पितामहः ॥१३-१३८-१७॥
draṣṭavyaṃ naitadevaṃ hi kathaṃ jyāyastamo hi saḥ। smṛtam ākāśamaṇḍaṃ tu tasmāj jātaḥ pitāmahaḥ ॥13-138-17॥
[द्रष्टव्यं (draṣṭavyam) - to be seen; न (na) - not; एतदेवम् (etadevam) - thus indeed; हि (hi) - for; कथं (kathaṃ) - how; ज्यायस्तमः (jyāyastamaḥ) - greater; हि (hi) - for; सः (saḥ) - he; स्मृतम् (smṛtam) - is remembered; आकाशमण्डं (ākāśamaṇḍam) - space-egg; तु (tu) - but; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from that; जातः (jātaḥ) - was born; पितामहः (pitāmahaḥ) - the Grandfather [Brahmā];]
(To be seen not thus indeed, for how is he greater? For he is remembered as the space-egg; but from that was born the Grandfather.)
It should not be considered thus, for how could he be greater? For he is known as the space-egg; but from that was born the Grandfather (Brahmā). (13-138-17)
तिष्ठेत्कथमिति ब्रूहि न किञ्चिद्धि तदा भवेत्। अहङ्कार इति प्रोक्तः सर्वतेजोगतः प्रभुः ॥१३-१३८-१८॥
tiṣṭhetkathamiti brūhi na kiñciddhi tadā bhavet। ahaṅkāra iti proktaḥ sarvatejogataḥ prabhuḥ ॥13-138-18॥
[तिष्ठेत् (tiṣṭhet) - might remain; कथम् (katham) - how; इति (iti) - thus; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; न (na) - not; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; हि (hi) - indeed; तदा (tadā) - then; भवेत् (bhavet) - would be; अहङ्कार (ahaṅkāra) - ego; इति (iti) - thus; प्रोक्तः (proktaḥ) - is said; सर्वतेजोगतः (sarvatejogataḥ) - endowed with all radiance; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord;]
(Might remain how thus tell, not anything indeed then would be. Ego thus is said, endowed with all radiance, the lord.)
Tell me, how might it remain? For indeed, then nothing would exist. Ego, thus, is said to be the lord, endowed with all radiance. (13-138-18)
नास्त्यण्डमस्ति तु ब्रह्मा स राजँल्लोकभावनः। इत्युक्तः स तदा तूष्णीमभूद्वायुस्तमब्रवीत् ॥१३-१३८-१९॥
nāstyaṇḍam asti tu brahmā sa rājaṃl lokabhāvanaḥ। ity uktaḥ sa tadā tūṣṇīm abhūd vāyus tam abravīt ॥13-138-19॥
[नास्ति (nāsti) - does not exist; अण्डम् (aṇḍam) - cosmic egg; अस्ति (asti) - exists; तु (tu) - but; ब्रह्मा (brahmā) - Brahmā; स (sa) - he; राजन् (rājan) - O king; लोकभावनः (lokabhāvanaḥ) - creator of the worlds; इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been spoken; स (sa) - he; तदा (tadā) - then; तूष्णीम् (tūṣṇīm) - silent; अभूत् (abhūt) - became; वायुः (vāyuḥ) - Vāyu; तम् (tam) - him; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Does not exist the egg; exists but Brahmā, he, O king, creator of the worlds. Thus spoken he then silent became; Vāyu him said.)
There is no egg; but Brahmā, O king, the creator of the worlds, exists. Having been thus addressed, he then became silent; Vāyu spoke to him. (13-138-19)
