Mahabharata - Anuśāsana Parva (महाभारत - अनुशासनपर्वम्)
13.138
Vāyu said.
O foolish one, listen to certain qualities of the great-souled brāhmaṇas. Of those brāhmaṇas mentioned by you, O king, the brāhmaṇa is the best among them. (13-138-1)
After abandoning sovereignty, the earth, because of rivalry with King Aṅga, began to perish; the brāhmaṇa Kaśyapa upheld her. (13-138-2)
O king, the Brāhmaṇa was undecaying both in heaven and here, always; formerly, Aṅgiras himself drank the waters by his energy indeed. (13-138-3)
He, O king, the great ascetic drank them like milk and was never satisfied; with a great torrent, he filled the entire earth. (13-138-4)
When he was enraged, I, having abandoned the world, left from there; out of fear, I remained with the Aṅgirases at the fire-sacrifice for a long time. (13-138-5)
And Puraṁdara (Indra), the Lord, was cursed by Gautama; desiring Ahalyā, indeed, but for the sake of righteousness, he was not harmed. (13-138-6)
Thus, O king, the ocean, which was once filled with pure water, was made entirely saline by the curse of the brāhmaṇas, O majestic one. (13-138-7)
He, of golden color, smokeless, with blazing united upward flames, wise; having been cursed by the angered Aṅgiras, was deprived of these qualities. (13-138-8)
See those winds, crushed for laughing at the great ocean, constantly cursed by the twice-born who wore gold. (13-138-9)
O ruler of men, know that you are not equal or superior to the twice-born; indeed, the Lord Himself properly bows to the Brahmins even when they are dwelling in the womb. (13-138-10)
The great kingdom of the Daṇḍakas was destroyed by a brāhmaṇa. The powerful Tāla-jaṅgha kṣatriya lineage was destroyed by Aurva alone. (13-138-11)
You have obtained an extensive kingdom, strength, dharma, and learning—all of which are extremely rare—by the grace of Dattatreya. (13-138-12)
You always worship Agni, but why, Arjuna, do you not honor the Brahmin? He indeed is the acceptor of oblations for the whole world; do you not know him? (13-138-13)
Now then, O best of Brāhmaṇas, knowing that the protector and creator of the world of living beings exists, why are you confused? (13-138-14)
Thus, Prajāpati Brahmā—unmanifest, the source and dissolution—is he by whom this whole universe of the moving and the unmoving is created. (13-138-15)
But some unwise persons wish for the creator (Brahmā) to be born from an egg; from the split egg arose the mountains, directions, waters, earth, and heaven. (13-138-16)
It should not be considered thus, for how could he be greater? For he is known as the space-egg; but from that was born the Grandfather (Brahmā). (13-138-17)
Tell me, how might it remain? For indeed, then nothing would exist. Ego, thus, is said to be the lord, endowed with all radiance. (13-138-18)
There is no egg; but Brahmā, O king, the creator of the worlds, exists. Having been thus addressed, he then became silent; Vāyu spoke to him. (13-138-19)
