इमां भूमिं ब्राह्मणेभ्यो दित्सुर्वै दक्षिणां पुरा। अङ्गो नाम नृपो राजंस्ततश्चिन्तां मही ययौ ॥१३-१३९-१॥
imāṃ bhūmiṃ brāhmaṇebhyo ditsur vai dakṣiṇāṃ purā। aṅgo nāma nṛpo rājaṃs tataś cintāṃ mahī yayau ॥13-139-1॥
[इमां (imāṃ) - this; भूमिं (bhūmiṃ) - earth; ब्राह्मणेभ्यः (brāhmaṇebhyaḥ) - to the Brāhmaṇas; दित्सुः (ditsur) - desiring to give; वै (vai) - truly; दक्षिणां (dakṣiṇāṃ) - as a sacrificial gift; पुरा (purā) - formerly; अङ्गः (aṅgaḥ) - Aṅga; नाम (nāma) - named; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - king; राजन् (rājan) - O king; ततः (tataḥ) - then; चिन्ताम् (cintām) - worry; मही (mahī) - the earth; ययौ (yayau) - he went;]
(This earth, to the Brāhmaṇas, desiring to give truly as a gift formerly, Aṅga named king, O king, then worry the earth he went.)
In former times, King Aṅga, wishing truly to give this earth as a sacrificial gift to the Brāhmaṇas, O king, then went to the earth with concern. (13-139-1)
धारणीं सर्वभूतानामयं प्राप्य वरो नृपः। कथमिच्छति मां दातुं द्विजेभ्यो ब्रह्मणः सुताम् ॥१३-१३९-२॥
dhāraṇīṃ sarvabhūtānām ayaṃ prāpya varo nṛpaḥ। katham icchati māṃ dātuṃ dvijebhyo brahmaṇaḥ sutām ॥13-139-2॥
[धारणीं (dhāraṇīṃ) - the earth; सर्वभूतानाम् (sarvabhūtānām) - of all beings; अयम् (ayam) - this; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; वरः (varaḥ) - boon; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - the king; कथम् (katham) - how; इच्छति (icchati) - desires; माम् (mām) - me; दातुम् (dātum) - to give; द्विजेभ्यः (dvijebhyaḥ) - to the twice-born; ब्रह्मणः (brahmaṇaḥ) - of Brahmā; सुताम् (sutām) - the daughter;]
(Having obtained the earth, the boon of all beings, this king—how does he desire to give me, the daughter of Brahmā, to the twice-born?)
Having obtained the earth as a boon for all beings, how does this king wish to give me, the daughter of Brahmā, to the twice-born? (13-139-2)
साहं त्यक्त्वा गमिष्यामि भूमित्वं ब्रह्मणः पदम्। अयं सराष्ट्रो नृपतिर्मा भूदिति ततोऽगमत् ॥१३-१३९-३॥
sāhaṁ tyaktvā gamiṣyāmi bhūmitvaṁ brahmaṇaḥ padam। ayaṁ sarāṣṭro nṛpatir mā bhūd iti tato'-gamat ॥13-139-3॥
[सः-अहम् (saḥ-aham) - he-I; त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - having abandoned; गमिष्यामि (gamiṣyāmi) - I shall go; भूमित्वं (bhūmitvam) - the state of being earth; ब्रह्मणः (brahmaṇaḥ) - of Brahman; पदम् (padam) - state; अयम् (ayam) - this; सराष्ट्रः (sarāṣṭraḥ) - together with the kingdom; नृपतिः (nṛpatiḥ) - king; मा (mā) - may not; भूत् (bhūt) - become; इति (iti) - thus; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अगमत् (agamat) - he went;]
(He, having abandoned, I shall go to the state of being earth, the state of Brahman. This, together with the kingdom, the king, may not become thus; then he went.)
He, having abandoned (the body), said, "I shall go to the state of being the earth, the station of Brahman. May this king, together with his kingdom, not be thus (fall into my state)." Then he departed. (13-139-3)
ततस्तां कश्यपो दृष्ट्वा व्रजन्तीं पृथिवीं तदा। प्रविवेश महीं सद्यो मुक्त्वात्मानं समाहितः ॥१३-१३९-४॥
tatastāṁ kaśyapo dṛṣṭvā vrajantīṁ pṛthivīṁ tadā। praviveśa mahīṁ sadyo muktvātmānaṁ samāhitaḥ ॥13-139-4॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ताम् (tām) - her; कश्यपः (kaśyapaḥ) - Kaśyapa (the Sage); दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; व्रजन्तīm (vrajantīm) - going; पृथिवīm (pṛthivīm) - the earth; तदा (tadā) - at that time; प्रविवेश (praviveśa) - (he) entered; महीं (mahīm) - the earth; सद्यः (sadyaḥ) - immediately; मुक्त्वा (muktvā) - having abandoned; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - his body; समाहितः (samāhitaḥ) - concentrated (in mind);]
(Then Kaśyapa, having seen her, the earth going at that time, immediately entered the earth, having abandoned his body, (being) concentrated in mind.)
Then Kaśyapa, seeing the earth moving away at that time, immediately, with concentrated mind, abandoned his body and entered into the earth. (13-139-4)
रुद्धा सा सर्वतो जज्ञे तृणौषधिसमन्विता। धर्मोत्तरा नष्टभया भूमिरासीत्ततो नृप ॥१३-१३९-५॥
ruddhā sā sarvato jajñe tṛṇauṣadhi-samanvitā। dharmottarā naṣṭabhayā bhūmir āsīt tato nṛpa ॥13-139-5॥
[रुद्धा (ruddhā) - obstructed; सा (sā) - she; सर्वतो (sarvato) - on all sides; जज्ञे (jajñe) - was born; तृणौषधि-समन्विता (tṛṇauṣadhi-samanvitā) - filled with grass and herbs; धर्मोत्तरा (dharmottarā) - surpassing in dharma; नष्टभया (naṣṭabhayā) - free from fear; भूमिः (bhūmiḥ) - the earth; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; ततः (tataḥ) - then; नृप (nṛpa) - O king;]
(Obstructed she on all sides was born, filled with grass and herbs; surpassing in dharma, free from fear, the earth was then, O king.)
She was obstructed on all sides and was filled with grass and herbs; surpassing in dharma and free from fear, the earth then existed, O king. (13-139-5)
एवं वर्षसहस्राणि दिव्यानि विपुलव्रतः। त्रिंशतं कश्यपो राजन्भूमिरासीदतन्द्रितः ॥१३-१३९-६॥
evaṁ varṣasahasrāṇi divyāni vipulavrataḥ। triṁśataṁ kaśyapo rājan bhūmir āsīd atandritaḥ॥13-139-6॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; वर्षसहस्राणि (varṣa-sahasrāṇi) - thousand years; दिव्यानि (divyāni) - divine; विपुलव्रतः (vipula-vrataḥ) - of great vows; त्रिंशतं (triṁśatam) - thirty; कश्यपः (kaśyapaḥ) - Kaśyapa; राजन् (rājan) - O king; भूमिः (bhūmiḥ) - the earth; आसीत् (āsīt) - remained; अतन्द्रितः (atandritaḥ) - without weariness;]
(Thus, for a thousand divine years, of great vows, thirty Kaśyapa, O king, the earth remained without weariness.)
O king, thus Kaśyapa of great vows, for thirty thousand divine years, ruled the earth untiringly. (13-139-6)
अथागम्य महाराज नमस्कृत्य च कश्यपम्। पृथिवी काश्यपी जज्ञे सुता तस्य महात्मनः ॥१३-१३९-७॥
athāgamya mahārāja namaskṛtya ca kaśyapam। pṛthivī kāśyapī jajñe sutā tasya mahātmanaḥ ॥13-139-7॥
[अथ (atha) - then; आगम्य (āgamya) - having come; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; नमस्कृत्य (namaskṛtya) - having bowed; च (ca) - and; कश्यपम् (kaśyapam) - to Kaśyapa; पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - Pṛthivī; काश्यपी (kāśyapī) - daughter of Kaśyapa; जज्ञे (jajñe) - was born; सुता (sutā) - daughter; तस्य (tasya) - his; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled one;]
(Then, having come, O great king, and having bowed to Kaśyapa, Pṛthivī, daughter of Kaśyapa, was born, his daughter of the great-souled one.)
Then, O great king, having come and having bowed to Kaśyapa, Pṛthivī, the daughter of Kaśyapa, was born as his daughter, that of the great-souled one. (13-139-7)
एष राजन्नीदृशो वै ब्राह्मणः कश्यपोऽभवत्। अन्यं प्रब्रूहि वापि त्वं कश्यपात्क्षत्रियं वरम् ॥१३-१३९-८॥
eṣa rājan nīdṛśo vai brāhmaṇaḥ kaśyapo 'bhavat । anyaṃ prabrūhi vā api tvaṃ kaśyapāt kṣatriyaṃ varam ॥13-139-8॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; राजन् (rājan) - O king; नीदृशः (nīdṛśaḥ) - such as this; वै (vai) - indeed; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - brāhmaṇa; कश्यपः (kaśyapaḥ) - Kaśyapa; अभवत् (abhavat) - was; अन्यम् (anyaṃ) - another; प्रब्रूहि (prabrūhi) - speak; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - also; त्वम् (tvaṃ) - you; कश्यपात् (kaśyapāt) - from Kaśyapa; क्षत्रियम् (kṣatriyam) - kṣatriya; वरम् (varam) - choice;]
(This, O king, such indeed brāhmaṇa Kaśyapa was. Another speak or also you kṣatriya of Kaśyapa as choice.)
O king, this brāhmaṇa Kaśyapa was such as this indeed. Or you may mention another kṣatriya as your choice apart from Kaśyapa. (13-139-8)
तूष्णीं बभूव नृपतिः पवनस्त्वब्रवीत्पुनः। शृणु राजन्नुतथ्यस्य जातस्याङ्गिरसे कुले ॥१३-१३९-९॥
tūṣṇīṃ babhūva nṛpatiḥ pavanas tv abravīt punaḥ । śṛṇu rājan nutathyasya jātasya aṅgirase kule ॥13-139-9॥
[तूष्णीं (tūṣṇīṃ) - silently; बभूव (babhūva) - became; नृपतिः (nṛpatiḥ) - the king; पवनः (pavanaḥ) - the wind (deity); त्व (tv) - but; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; राजन् (rājan) - O king; उतथ्यस्य (utathyasya) - of Utathya; जातस्य (jātasya) - born; अङ्गिरसे (aṅgirase) - in the lineage of Aṅgiras; कुले (kule) - in the family;]
(Silently became the king; but the wind said again: Hear, O king, of Utathya born in the lineage of Aṅgiras in the family.)
The king fell silent, but the wind spoke again: "Listen, O king, about Utathya, who was born in the family of Aṅgiras." (13-139-9)
भद्रा सोमस्य दुहिता रूपेण परमा मता। तस्यास्तुल्यं पतिं सोम उतथ्यं समपश्यत ॥१३-१३९-१०॥
bhadrā somasya duhitā rūpeṇa paramā matā। tasyās tulyaṁ patiṁ soma utathyaṁ samapaśyata ॥13-139-10॥
[भद्रा (bhadrā) - Bhadra; (proper name, feminine); सोमस्य (somasya) - of Soma; (genitive, masculine); दुहिता (duhitā) - daughter; (feminine); रूपेण (rūpeṇa) - by beauty; (instrumental singular); परमा (paramā) - supreme; (feminine, nominative singular); मता (matā) - regarded; (past passive participle, feminine); तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - her; (genitive singular, feminine); तुल्यं (tulyaṁ) - equal; (accusative singular, masculine); पतिं (patiṁ) - husband; (accusative singular, masculine); सोम (soma) - Soma; (nominative singular, masculine); उतथ्यं (utathyaṁ) - Utathya; (proper name, accusative singular, masculine); समपश्यत (samapaśyata) - saw; (third person singular, past tense);]
(Bhadra, of Soma the daughter, by beauty supreme was regarded. Her equal husband, Soma saw Utathya.)

सा च तीव्रं तपस्तेपे महाभागा यशस्विनी। उतथ्यं तु महाभागं तत्कृतेऽवरयत्तदा ॥१३-१३९-११॥
sā ca tīvraṃ tapastepe mahābhāgā yaśasvinī। utathyaṃ tu mahābhāgaṃ tatkṛte'varayattadā ॥13-139-11॥
[सा (sā) - she; च (ca) - and; तीव्रं (tīvram) - intense; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; तेपे (tepe) - performed; practiced; महाभागा (mahābhāgā) - exceedingly fortunate (feminine); यशस्विनी (yaśasvinī) - famous (feminine); उतथ्यं (utathyaṃ) - Utathya (proper noun, masculine accusative singular); तु (tu) - but; महाभागं (mahābhāgam) - exceedingly fortunate (masculine accusative singular); तत्कृते (tatkṛte) - for that (on that account); अवरयत् (avarayat) - checked; restrained; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(She and intense austerity practiced, exceedingly fortunate, famous woman. Utathya but exceedingly fortunate man for that (reason) restrained then.)
She, the exceedingly fortunate and renowned woman, performed intense austerity. At that time, for that reason, she restrained the exceedingly fortunate Utathya. (13-139-11)
तत आहूय सोतथ्यं ददावत्र यशस्विनीम्। भार्यार्थे स च जग्राह विधिवद्भूरिदक्षिण ॥१३-१३९-१२॥
tat āhūya sotathyaṃ dadāvatra yaśasvinīm। bhāryārthe sa ca jagrāha vidhivadbhūridakṣiṇa ॥13-139-12॥
[तत् (tat) - that; आहूय (āhūya) - having called; सः (saḥ) - he; उतथ्यम् (utathyam) - Utathya (proper noun); ददौ (dadau) - gave; अत्र (atra) - here; यशस्विनीम् (yaśasvinīm) - the illustrious (woman); भार्यार्थे (bhāryārthe) - for the sake of a wife; सः (saḥ) - he; च (ca) - and; जग्राह (jagrāha) - accepted; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - according to rule; भूरिदक्षिणम् (bhūridakṣiṇam) - with abundant gifts;]
(That having called, he gave here Utathya the illustrious (woman); for the sake of a wife, he and accepted according to rule with abundant gifts.)
Then, having called, he gave the illustrious woman here to Utathya; for the sake of a wife, he accepted her according to the proper rites, with abundant gifts. (13-139-12)
तां त्वकामयत श्रीमान्वरुणः पूर्वमेव ह। स चागम्य वनप्रस्थं यमुनायां जहार ताम् ॥१३-१३९-१३॥
tāṁ tv akāmayata śrīmān varuṇaḥ pūrvam eva ha। sa ca āgamya vanaprasthaṁ yamunāyāṁ jahāra tām॥13-139-13॥
[तां (tām) - her; त्व (tv) - indeed; अकामयत् (akāmayata) - desired; श्रीमान् (śrīmān) - prosperous; endowed with wealth; वरुणः (varuṇaḥ) - Varuṇa; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - previously; before; एव (eva) - indeed; certainly; ह (ha) - surely; indeed; सः (saḥ) - he; च (ca) - and; आगम्य (āgamya) - having arrived; वनप्रस्थम् (vanaprastham) - the forest-dwelling (place); यमुनायाम् (yamunāyām) - on (the banks of) Yamunā; जहार (jahāra) - carried away; ताम् (tām) - her;]
(Her, indeed, the prosperous Varuṇa previously indeed surely desired. He and, having arrived at the forest-dwelling on Yamunā, carried away her.)
Varuṇa, the prosperous one, had already desired her before. Then he went to the forest hermitage on the Yamunā and carried her away. (13-139-13)
जलेश्वरस्तु हृत्वा तामनयत्स्वपुरं प्रति। परमाद्भुतसङ्काशं षट्सहस्रशतह्रदम् ॥१३-१३९-१४॥
jaleśvarastu hṛtvā tāmanayatsvapuraṃ prati. paramādbhutasaṅkāśaṃ ṣaṭsahasraśatahradam ॥13-139-14॥
[जलेश्वरः (jaleśvaraḥ) - the lord of waters; तु (tu) - but; हृत्वा (hṛtvā) - having taken away; ताम् (tām) - her; अनयत् (anayat) - brought; स्वपुरं (svapuraṃ) - his own city; प्रति (prati) - towards; परमाद्भुतसङ्काशं (paramādbhutasaṅkāśam) - of the appearance of supreme wonder; षट्सहस्रशतह्रदम् (ṣaṭsahasraśata-hradam) - a pond of six hundred thousand (waves or pools);]
(But the lord of waters, having taken her away, brought (her) towards his own city—a pond of six hundred thousand (waves or pools), of the appearance of supreme wonder.)
But the lord of waters, having taken her away, brought her to his own city—a pond, astonishing in form, consisting of six hundred thousand (waves or pools). (13-139-14)
न हि रम्यतरं किञ्चित्तस्मादन्यत्पुरोत्तमम्। प्रासादैरप्सरोभिश्च दिव्यैः कामैश्च शोभितम् ॥ तत्र देवस्तया सार्धं रेमे राजञ्जलेश्वरः ॥१३-१३९-१५॥
na hi ramyataraṃ kiñcittasmādanyatpurottamam. prāsādairapsarobhiśca divyaiḥ kāmaiśca śobhitam ॥ tatra devastayā sārdhaṃ reme rājañjaleśvaraḥ ॥13-139-15॥
[न (na) (na) - not; हि (hi) (hi) - indeed; रम्यतरं (ramyataraṃ) (ramyataraṃ) - more delightful; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) (kiñcit) - anything; तस्मात् (tasmāt) (tasmāt) - than that; अन्यत् (anyat) (anyat) - other; पुरोत्तमम् (purottamam) (purottamam) - best of cities; प्रासादैः (prāsādaiḥ) (prāsādaiḥ) - with palaces; अप्सरोभिः (apsarobhiḥ) (apsarobhiḥ) - with apsarases; च (ca) (ca) - and; दिव्यैः (divyaiḥ) (divyaiḥ) - divine; कामैः (kāmaiḥ) (kāmaiḥ) - with pleasures; च (ca) (ca) - and; शोभितम् (śobhitam) (śobhitam) - adorned; तत्र (tatra) (tatra) - there; देवः (devaḥ) (devaḥ) - the lord; तया (tayā) (tayā) - with her; सार्धं (sārdhaṃ) (sārdhaṃ) - together; रेमे (reme) (reme) - enjoyed; राजन् (rājan) (rājan) - O king; जलेश्वरः (jaleśvaraḥ) (jaleśvaraḥ) - the lord of waters;]
(Not indeed more delightful anything than that other best of cities. With palaces, apsarases and divine pleasures adorned. There, the lord with her together enjoyed, O king, the lord of waters.)
There is indeed nothing more delightful than that best of cities, adorned with palaces, apsarases, and divine pleasures. There, O king, the lord of waters enjoyed together with her. (13-139-15)
अथाख्यातमुतथ्याय ततः पत्न्यवमर्दनम्। तच्छ्रुत्वा नारदात्सर्वमुतथ्यो नारदं तदा ॥१३-१३९-१६॥
athākhyātamutathyāya tataḥ patnyavamardanam. tacchrutvā nāradātsarvamutathyo nāradaṃ tadā ॥13-139-16॥
[अथ (atha) - then; आख्यातम् (ākhyātam) - declared; उतथ्याय (utathyāya) - to Utathya; ततः (tataḥ) - then; पत्न्यवमर्दनम् (patny-avamardanam) - the oppression of (his) wife; तत् (tat) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; नारदात् (nāradāt) - from Nārada; सर्वम् (sarvam) - everything; उतथ्यः (utathyaḥ) - Utathya; नारदम् (nāradam) - Nārada; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Then, (it was) declared to Utathya, then, the oppression of (his) wife. That having heard from Nārada, everything, Utathya (addressed) Nārada then.)
Then, the oppression of (his) wife was reported to Utathya. Having heard everything from Nārada, Utathya spoke to Nārada at that time. (13-139-16)
प्रोवाच गच्छ ब्रूहि त्वं वरुणं परुषं वचः ॥ मद्वाक्यान्मुञ्च मे भार्यां कस्माद्वा हृतवानसि ॥१३-१३९-१७॥
provāca gaccha brūhi tvaṃ varuṇaṃ paruṣaṃ vacaḥ ॥ madvākyānmuñca me bhāryāṃ kasmādvā hṛtavānasi ॥13-139-17॥
[प्रोवाच (provāca) - he/said; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - say; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; वरुणं (varuṇam) - Varuṇa (proper noun); परुषं (paruṣam) - harsh; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; मद्वाक्यान् (mad-vākyāt) - from my words; मुञ्च (muñca) - release; मे (me) - my; भार्यां (bhāryām) - wife; कस्मात् (kasmāt) - for what reason; वा (vā) - or; हृतवान (hṛtavān) - you have taken; असि (asi) - are (you);]
(He said, "Go, say you to Varuṇa harsh words. From my words, release my wife; for what reason or have you taken (her)." (13-139-17))
He said, "Go and speak harsh words to Varuṇa: From my command, release my wife; or for what reason have you taken her?" (13-139-17)
लोकपालोऽसि लोकानां न लोकस्य विलोपकः। सोमेन दत्ता भार्या मे त्वया चापहृताद्य वै ॥१३-१३९-१८॥
lokapālo'si lokānāṃ na lokasya vilopakaḥ। somena dattā bhāryā me tvayā cāpahṛtādy a vai ॥13-139-18॥
[लोकपालः (lokapālaḥ) - protector of the world; असि (asi) - you are; लोकानाम् (lokānām) - of the worlds; न (na) - not; लोकस्य (lokasya) - of the world; विलोपकः (vilopakaḥ) - destroyer; सोमेन (somena) - by Soma; दत्ता (dattā) - given; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; मे (me) - my; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; च (ca) - and; अपहृता (apahṛtā) - taken away; अद्य (adya) - today; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(Protector of the worlds you are; not the destroyer of the world. By Soma given wife my by you also taken away today indeed (13-139-18))
You are the protector of the worlds, not their destroyer. My wife, given to me by Soma, has indeed been taken away by you today. (13-139-18)
इत्युक्तो वचनात्तस्य नारदेन जलेश्वरः। मुञ्च भार्यामुतथ्यस्येत्यथ तं वरुणोऽब्रवीत् ॥ ममैषा सुप्रिया भार्या नैनामुत्स्रष्टुमुत्सहे ॥१३-१३९-१९॥
ityukto vacanāttasya nāradena jaleśvaraḥ. muñca bhāryām utathyasyety atha taṃ varuṇo'bravīt ॥ mama eṣā supriyā bhāryā na enām utsraṣṭum utsahe ॥13-139-19॥

(Thus, addressed by his word, by Nārada, the lord of waters, "Release Utathya's wife,"—then to him Varuṇa spoke: "This is my most dear wife; I am not able to release her." (13-139-19))
Thus, when addressed by Nārada's words, the lord of waters was told, "Release Utathya's wife." Then Varuṇa said to him, "She is my most beloved wife; I am not able to release her." (13-139-19)
इत्युक्तो वरुणेनाथ नारदः प्राप्य तं मुनिम्। उतथ्यमब्रवीद्वाक्यं नातिहृष्टमना इव ॥१३-१३९-२०॥
ityukto varuṇenātha nāradaḥ prāpya taṃ munim. utathyam abravīd vākyaṃ nātihṛṣṭamanā iva ॥13-139-20॥
[इति-युक्तः (iti-uktaḥ) - thus-addressed; वरुणेन (varuṇena) - by Varuṇa; अथ (atha) - then; नारदः (nāradaḥ) - Nārada; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having reached; तम् (tam) - that; मुनिम् (munim) - sage; उतथ्यम् (utathyam) - Utathya; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - the words; न-अति-हृष्ट-मनाः (na-ati-hṛṣṭa-manāḥ) - not-very-glad-minded; इव (iva) - as if;]
(Thus addressed by Varuṇa then Nārada, having reached that sage Utathya, said the words, not very glad-minded as if.)
Thus, after being addressed by Varuṇa, Nārada approached that sage Utathya and spoke these words, appearing not very pleased. (13-139-20)
गले गृहीत्वा क्षिप्तोऽस्मि वरुणेन महामुने। न प्रयच्छति ते भार्यां यत्ते कार्यं कुरुष्व तत् ॥१३-१३९-२१॥
gale gṛhītvā kṣipto'smi varuṇena mahāmune। na prayacchati te bhāryāṃ yat te kāryaṃ kuruṣva tat ॥13-139-21॥
[गले (gale) - on the neck; गृहीत्वा (gṛhītvā) - having seized; क्षित्पः (kṣiptaḥ) - thrown; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; वरुणेन (varuṇena) - by Varuṇa; महामुने (mahāmune) - O great sage; न (na) - not; प्रयच्छति (prayacchati) - he gives; ते (te) - to you; भार्यां (bhāryāṃ) - wife; यत् (yat) - that which; ते (te) - your; कार्यं (kāryaṃ) - task; कुरुष्व (kuruṣva) - do; तत् (tat) - that;]
(On the neck having seized, I am thrown by Varuṇa, O great sage. He does not give your wife to you. That which your task, do that.)
Having been seized by the neck and thrown by Varuṇa, O great sage, he does not give your wife to you. Do that task which is yours. (13-139-21)
नारदस्य वचः श्रुत्वा क्रुद्धः प्राज्वलदङ्गिराः। अपिबत्तेजसा वारि विष्टभ्य सुमहातपाः ॥१३-१३९-२२॥
nāradasya vacaḥ śrutvā kruddhaḥ prājvaladaṅgirāḥ. apibattejasā vāri viṣṭabhya sumahātapāḥ ॥13-139-22॥
[नारदस्य (nāradasya) - of Nārada; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angry; प्राज्वलदङ्गिराः (prājvaladaṅgirāḥ) - the flaming Aṅgirāḥ; अपिबत् (apibat) - drank; तेजसा (tejasā) - with energy; वारि (vāri) - water; विष्टभ्य (viṣṭabhya) - having restrained; सुमहातपाः (sumahātapāḥ) - the very great ascetic;]
(Having heard the words of Nārada, the flaming Aṅgirāḥ, angry, drank water with energy, having restrained himself, the very great ascetic.)
Hearing Nārada’s words, the fiery and angry Aṅgirāḥ, the great ascetic, forcefully drank water after restraining himself. (13-139-22)
पीयमाने च सर्वस्मिंस्तोये वै सलिलेश्वरः। सुहृद्भिः क्षिप्यमाणोऽपि नैवामुञ्चत तां तदा ॥१३-१३९-२३॥
pīyamāne ca sarvasmiṃstoye vai salileśvaraḥ। suhṛdbhiḥ kṣipyamāṇo'pi naivāmuñcata tāṃ tadā॥13-139-23॥
[पीयमाने (pīyamāne) - when being drunk; च (ca) - and; सर्वस्मिन्स्तोये (sarvasmin toye) - in all the water; वै (vai) - indeed; सलिलेश्वरः (salileśvaraḥ) - the lord of waters; सुहृद्भिः (suhṛdbhiḥ) - by friends; क्षिप्यमाणः (kṣipyamāṇaḥ) - being cast (thrown); अपि (api) - even; न (na) - not; एव (eva) - at all; अमुंचत (amuñcata) - let go; ताम् (tām) - her; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(When all the water was indeed being drunk, and the lord of waters, even while being cast by friends, did not at all let go of her then.)
As all the water was being drunk, the lord of waters, even when thrown by his friends, did not let go of her at all at that time. (13-139-23)
ततः क्रुद्धोऽब्रवीद्भूमिमुतथ्यो ब्राह्मणोत्तमः। दर्शयस्व स्थलं भद्रे षट्सहस्रशतह्रदम् ॥१३-१३९-२४॥
tataḥ kruddho'bravīdbhūmimutathyo brāhmaṇottamaḥ। darśayasva sthalaṃ bhadre ṣaṭsahasraśatahradam ॥13-139-24॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angry; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; भूमिम् (bhūmim) - to Bhūmi (the earth); उथथ्यः (utathyaḥ) - Utathya (proper name); ब्राह्मणोत्तमः (brāhmaṇottamaḥ) - eminent Brāhmaṇa; दर्शयस्व (darśayasva) - show; स्थलम् (sthalam) - place; भद्रे (bhadre) - O good one; षट्-सहस्र-शत-ह्रदम् (ṣaṭ-sahasra-śata-hradam) - having six-thousand lakes;]
(Then, angry, Utathya, eminent Brāhmaṇa, spoke to Bhūmi: "Show the place, O good one, having six-thousand lakes.")
Then the eminent Brāhmaṇa Utathya, being angry, said to the earth: "O good one, show the place with six-thousand lakes." (13-139-24)
ततस्तदिरिणं जातं समुद्रश्चापसर्पितः। तस्माद्देशान्नदीं चैव प्रोवाचासौ द्विजोत्तमः ॥१३-१३९-२५॥
tatas tad iriṇaṃ jātaṃ samudraś cāpasarpitaḥ। tasmād deśān nadīṃ caiva provācāsau dvijottamaḥ॥13-139-25॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तत् (tat) - that; इरिणं (iriṇaṃ) - desert; जातं (jātaṃ) - became; was formed; समुद्रः (samudraḥ) - the ocean; च (ca) - and; अपसर्पितः (apasarpitaḥ) - withdrawn; receded; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from that; देशात् (deśāt) - from the region; नदीं (nadīṃ) - the river; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; प्रोवाच (provāca) - spoke; told; असौ (asau) - that (he); द्विजोत्तमः (dvijottamaḥ) - the best of twice-born; (i.e., distinguished Brāhmaṇa);]
(Then that desert was formed, and the ocean receded; from that region, the river also indeed, that best of twice-born (Brāhmaṇa) spoke.)
Then, that region became a desert and the ocean withdrew. From that land, and also about the river, that distinguished Brāhmaṇa described it. (13-139-25)
अदृश्या गच्छ भीरु त्वं सरस्वति मरुं प्रति। अपुण्य एष भवतु देशस्त्यक्तस्त्वया शुभे ॥१३-१३९-२६॥
adṛśyā gaccha bhīru tvaṃ sarasvati maruṃ prati। apuṇya eṣa bhavatu deśas tyaktaḥ tvayā śubhe ॥13-139-26॥

(Unseen go, O timid one, you Sarasvati, towards the desert. Let this unholy land, abandoned by you, O auspicious one, become so.)
Go unseen, O timid one, O Sarasvati, towards the desert. Let this land, having been abandoned by you, O auspicious one, become unholy. (13-139-26)
तस्मिन्सञ्चूर्णिते देशे भद्रामादाय वारिपः। अददाच्छरणं गत्वा भार्यामाङ्गिरसाय वै ॥१३-१३९-२७॥
tasmin sañcūrṇite deśe bhadrām ādāya vāri-paḥ | adadāc charaṇaṃ gatvā bhāryām āṅgirasāya vai ||13-139-27||

(In that crushed place, having brought Bhadra, the water-bearer gave as refuge, having gone, the wife to Aṅgirasa indeed.)
In that devastated place, the water-bearer took Bhadra and, having gone, gave his wife to Aṅgirasa as a refuge. (13-139-27)
प्रतिगृह्य तु तां भार्यामुतथ्यः सुमनाभवत्। मुमोच च जगद्दुःखाद्वरुणं चैव हैहय ॥१३-१३९-२८॥
pratigṛhya tu tāṃ bhāryām utathyaḥ sumanā abhavat। mumoca ca jagadduḥkhāt varuṇaṃ caiva haihaya ॥13-139-28॥
[प्रतिगृह्य (pratigṛhya) - having accepted; (having taken); तु (tu) - but; तां (tāṃ) - her; भार्याम् (bhāryām) - wife; उतथ्यः (utathyaḥ) - Utathya; सुमना (sumanā) - glad-minded; (with happy mind); अभवत् (abhavat) - became; मुमोच (mumoca) - released; च (ca) - and; जगद्दुःखात् (jagadduḥkhāt) - from the world's suffering; वरुणम् (varuṇam) - Varuṇa; चैव (ca eva) - and also; हैहय (haihaya) - Haihaya;]
(Having accepted her as wife, but Utathya became glad-minded; and released from the world's suffering Varuṇa and also Haihaya.)
But having accepted her as his wife, Utathya became pleased; and he released both Varuṇa and Haihaya from the suffering of the world. (13-139-28)
ततः स लब्ध्वा तां भार्यां वरुणं प्राह धर्मवित्। उतथ्यः सुमहातेजा यत्तच्छृणु नराधिप ॥१३-१३९-२९॥
tataḥ sa labdhvā tāṃ bhāryāṃ varuṇaṃ prāha dharmavit| utathyaḥ sumahātejā yat tac chṛṇu narādhipa ॥13-139-29॥

(Then he, having obtained her as wife, said to Varuṇa, Utathya, knower of dharma, of very great brilliance, what that, hear, O king.)
Then, having obtained her as his wife, Utathya—the knower of dharma and possessing great brilliance—said this to Varuṇa; hear what that is, O king. (13-139-29)
मयैषा तपसा प्राप्ता क्रोशतस्ते जलाधिप। इत्युक्त्वा तामुपादाय स्वमेव भवनं ययौ ॥१३-१३९-३०॥
mayaiṣā tapasā prāptā krośataste jalādhipa। ityuktvā tāmupādāya svameva bhavanaṃ yayau ॥13-139-30॥
[मया (mayā) - by me; एषा (eṣā) - this (feminine); तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; प्राप्ता (prāptā) - obtained; क्रोशतः (krośataḥ) - as you were crying; ते (te) - to you; जलाधिप (jalādhipa) - O lord of waters; इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; ताम् (tām) - her; उपादाय (upādāya) - taking (her); स्वम् (svam) - one's own; एव (eva) - indeed; भवनं (bhavanaṃ) - house; ययौ (yayau) - he went;]
(By me, this (woman) by austerity obtained, as you were crying, to you, O lord of waters. Thus having said, taking her, to his own house indeed he went. (13-139-30))
"O lord of waters, this woman has been obtained by me through austerity while you were crying." Saying thus, he took her and went to his own house. (13-139-30)
एष राजन्नीदृशो वै उतथ्यो ब्राह्मणर्षभः। ब्रवीम्यहं ब्रूहि वा त्वमुतथ्यात्क्षत्रियं वरम् ॥१३-१३९-३१॥
eṣa rājan nīdṛśo vai utathyo brāhmaṇa-ṛṣabhaḥ। bravīmi ahaṁ brūhi vā tvam utathyāt kṣatriyaṁ varam॥13-139-31॥
[एष (eṣa) - this (man); राजन् (rājan) - O king; नीदृशः (nīdṛśaḥ) - such as this; of this kind; वै (vai) - indeed; उतथ्यः (utathyaḥ) - Utathya (proper noun); ब्राह्मणर्षभः (brāhmaṇa-ṛṣabhaḥ) - the foremost among Brāhmaṇas; bull among Brahmins; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I speak; अहं (ahaṁ) - I; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - do you say; वा (vā) - or; त्वम् (tvam) - you; उतथ्यात् (utathyāt) - from Utathya; क्षत्रियम् (kṣatriyam) - Kṣatriya (warrior); वरम् (varam) - boon; favor;]
(This, O king, indeed is Utathya, of such kind, the foremost among Brāhmaṇas. I speak, or you say, from Utathya, Kṣatriya boon.)
This, O king, is Utathya, indeed of such sort, the foremost among Brāhmaṇas. I will speak, or if you wish, you may speak: from Utathya, ask a boon for a Kṣatriya. (13-139-31)
