Bhīṣma said.
इत्युक्तः स तदा तूष्णीमभूद्वायुस्ततोऽब्रवीत्। शृणु राजन्नगस्त्यस्य माहात्म्यं ब्राह्मणस्य ह ॥१३-१४०-१॥
ityuktaḥ sa tadā tūṣṇīm abhūt vāyuḥ tato 'bravīt। śṛṇu rājan agastyasya māhātmyaṃ brāhmaṇasya ha॥ 13-140-1॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been addressed; स (sa) - he; तदा (tadā) - then; तूष्णीम् (tūṣṇīm) - in silence; अभूत् (abhūt) - became; वायुः (vāyuḥ) - Vāyu; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; शृणु (śṛṇu) - listen; राजन् (rājan) - O king; अगस्त्यस्य (agastyasya) - of Agastya; माहात्म्यम् (māhātmyam) - greatness; ब्राह्मणस्य (brāhmaṇasya) - of the Brāhmaṇa; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Thus addressed, he then in silence became; Vāyu then spoke. Listen, O king, indeed to the greatness of the Brāhmaṇa Agastya.)
Having thus been addressed, he (Vāyu) then became silent; then Vāyu spoke: "Listen, O king, to the greatness of the Brāhmaṇa Agastya." (13-140-1)
असुरैर्निर्जिता देवा निरुत्साहाश्च ते कृताः। यज्ञाश्चैषां हृताः सर्वे पितृभ्यश्च स्वधा तथा ॥१३-१४०-२॥
asurair nirjitā devā nirutsāhāś ca te kṛtāḥ। yajñāś caiṣāṃ hṛtāḥ sarve pitṛbhyaś ca svadhā tathā ॥13-140-2॥
[असुरैः (asuraiḥ) - by the Asuras; निर्जिताः (nirjitāḥ) - defeated; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; निरुत्साहाः (nirutsāhāḥ) - dispirited; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - they; कृताः (kṛtāḥ) - made (have been made); यज्ञाः (yajñāḥ) - sacrifices; च (ca) - and; एषाम् (eṣām) - of them; हृताः (hṛtāḥ) - taken away; सर्वे (sarve) - all; पितृभ्यः (pitṛbhyaḥ) - from the forefathers (ancestors); च (ca) - and; स्वधा (svadhā) - offering (to ancestors); तथा (tathā) - also;]
(By the Asuras, the gods have been defeated, and they have been made dispirited. The sacrifices of them all have been taken away, and likewise the offering to the ancestors.)
The gods have been defeated by the Asuras and rendered dispirited; all their sacrifices and the offerings to the ancestors have also been taken away. (13-140-2)
कर्मेज्या मानवानां च दानवैर्हैहयर्षभ। भ्रष्टैश्वर्यास्ततो देवाश्चेरुः पृथ्वीमिति श्रुतिः ॥१३-१४०-३॥
karmejyā mānavānāṃ ca dānavairhaihayaṛṣabha। bhraṣṭaiśvaryāstato devāśceruḥ pṛthvīmiti śrutiḥ॥13-140-3॥
[कर्मेज्या (karmejyā) - by (being) worshipped through action; (i.e., yajña or ritual action); मानवानां (mānavānāṃ) - of humans; (genitive plural of mānava); च (ca) - and; दानवैः (dānavaiḥ) - by asuras; by dānavas; (instrumental plural); हैहयर्षभ (haihayaṛṣabha) - O bull among the Haihayas; (vocative singular compound); भ्रष्टैश्वर्याः (bhraṣṭaiśvaryāḥ) - having lost their lordship; deprived of their power; ततः (tataḥ) - from that; thereafter; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; (nominative plural); चेरुः (ceruḥ) - moved about; wandered; पृथ्वीम् (pṛthvīm) - the earth; (accusative singular); इति (iti) - thus; श्रुतिः (śrutiḥ) - it is heard; tradition says;]
(By being worshipped through actions as well as by humans and by asuras, O bull among Haihayas, having lost their power, thereafter the gods moved upon the earth—thus the tradition says.)
O bull among the Haihayas, tradition says that, due to being worshipped through ritual acts by humans and by asuras, the gods, having lost their power, then wandered upon the earth. (13-140-3)
ततः कदाचित्ते राजन्दीप्तमादित्यवर्चसम्। ददृशुस्तेजसा युक्तमगस्त्यं विपुलव्रतम् ॥१३-१४०-४॥
tataḥ kadācitte rājan dīptam āditya-varcasam। dadṛśus tejasā yuktam agastyaṃ vipula-vratam॥13-140-4॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; कदाचित् (kadācit) - at some time; ते (te) - they; राजन् (rājan) - O king; दीप्तम् (dīptam) - shining; आदित्यवर्चसम् (āditya-varcasam) - having the splendor of the sun; ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - they saw; तेजसा (tejasā) - with brilliance; युक्तम् (yuktam) - endowed; अगस्त्यम् (agastyam) - Agastya (sage's name); विपुलव्रतम् (vipula-vratam) - of vast vow;]
(Then at some time they, O king, shining, having the splendor of the sun, saw Agastya, endowed with brilliance, of vast vow.)
Then, O king, at some time they saw the sage Agastya, endowed with brilliance and shining with the splendor of the sun, who was possessed of a great vow. (13-140-4)
अभिवाद्य च तं देवा दृष्ट्वा च यशसा वृतम्। इदमूचुर्महात्मानं वाक्यं काले जनाधिप ॥१३-१४०-५॥
abhivādya ca taṁ devā dṛṣṭvā ca yaśasā vṛtam। idam ūcur mahātmānaṁ vākyaṁ kāle janādhipa ॥13-140-5॥
[अभिवाद्य (abhivādya) - having greeted; च (ca) - and; तं (taṁ) - him; देवा (devāḥ) - the gods; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; च (ca) - and; यशसा (yaśasā) - by fame; वृतम् (vṛtam) - surrounded; इदम् (idam) - this; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said; महात्मानम् (mahātmānam) - the great-souled; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; काले (kāle) - at the right time; जनाधिप (janādhipa) - O lord of people;]
(Having greeted and him, the gods, having seen and surrounded by fame, this said to the great-souled words at the right time, O lord of people.)
Having greeted him, the gods, seeing him surrounded by fame, addressed these words to the great-souled one at the right moment, O lord of the people. (13-140-5)
दानवैर्युधि भग्नाः स्म तथैश्वर्याच्च भ्रंशिताः। तदस्मान्नो भयात्तीव्रात्त्राहि त्वं मुनिपुङ्गव ॥१३-१४०-६॥
dānavair yudhi bhagnāḥ sma tathaiśvaryāc ca bhraṃśitāḥ. tadasmān no bhayāt tīvrāt trāhi tvaṃ munipuṅgava ॥13-140-6॥
[दानवैः (dānavaiḥ) - by the Dānavas; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; भग्नाः (bhagnāḥ) - defeated; स्म (sma) - indeed; तथा (tathā) - likewise; ऐश्वर्यात् (aiśvaryāt) - from sovereignty; च (ca) - and; भ्रंशिताः (bhraṃśitāḥ) - deprived; तत् (tat) - therefore; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; नः (naḥ) - from; भयात् (bhayāt) - from fear; तीव्रात् (tīvrāt) - intense; त्राहि (trāhi) - protect; त्वम् (tvam) - you; मुनिपुङ्गव (munipuṅgava) - O best of sages;]
(By the Dānavas in battle (we are) defeated indeed, likewise from sovereignty also deprived. Therefore us from intense fear protect you, O best of sages.)
We have indeed been defeated in battle by the Dānavas and likewise have been deprived of our sovereignty. Therefore, O best of sages, protect us from this intense fear. (13-140-6)
इत्युक्तः स तदा देवैरगस्त्यः कुपितोऽभवत्। प्रजज्वाल च तेजस्वी कालाग्निरिव सङ्क्षये ॥१३-१४०-७॥
ityuktaḥ sa tadā devair agastyaḥ kupito 'bhavat। prajajvāla ca tejasvī kālāgnir iva saṅkṣaye ॥13-140-7॥
[इत्युक्तः (ityuktaḥ) - thus addressed; स (sa) - he; तदा (tadā) - then; देवैः (devaiḥ) - by the gods; अगस्त्यः (agastyaḥ) - Agastya; कुपितः (kupitaḥ) - angry; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; प्रजज्वाल (prajajvāla) - blazed forth; च (ca) - and; तेजस्वी (tejasvī) - full of radiance; कालाग्निरिव (kālāgnir iva) - like the fire of destruction; सङ्क्षये (saṅkṣaye) - at dissolution;]
(Thus addressed, he then by the gods, Agastya became angry; he blazed forth and, full of radiance, like the fire of destruction at dissolution.)
When thus addressed by the gods, Agastya became angry; he blazed with radiance like the fire of destruction at the end of time. (13-140-7)
तेन दीप्तांशुजालेन निर्दग्धा दानवास्तदा। अन्तरिक्षान्महाराज न्यपतन्त सहस्रशः ॥१३-१४०-८॥
tena dīptāṃśu-jālena nirdagdhā dānavās tadā। antarikṣāt mahārāja nyapatanta sahasraśaḥ ॥13-140-8॥
[तेन (tena) - by that; दीप्तांशुजालेन (dīptāṃśu-jālena) - by the blazing-ray-network; निर्दग्धा (nirdagdhāḥ) - burnt; दानवाः (dānavāḥ) - the Daityas; तदा (tadā) - then; अन्तरिक्षात् (antarikṣāt) - from the sky; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; न्यपतन्त (nyapatanta) - fell down; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by thousands;]
(By that blazing-ray-network, burnt, the Daityas then from the sky, O great king, fell down by thousands.)
O great king, by that blazing network of rays, the Daityas were burnt and then fell from the sky by the thousands. (13-140-8)
दह्यमानास्तु ते दैत्यास्तस्यागस्त्यस्य तेजसा। उभौ लोकौ परित्यज्य ययुः काष्ठां स्म दक्षिणाम् ॥१३-१४०-९॥
dahyamānās tu te daityās tasyāgastyasya tejasā। ubhau lokau parityajya yayuḥ kāṣṭhāṁ sma dakṣiṇām ॥13-140-9॥
[दह्यमानाः (dahyamānāḥ) - being burned; तु (tu) - but; ते (te) - those; दैत्याः (daityāḥ) - Daityas (demons); तस्य (tasya) - of him (Agastya); अगस्त्यस्य (agastyasya) - Agastya's; तेजसा (tejasā) - by the brilliance; उभौ (ubhau) - both; लोकौ (lokau) - worlds; परित्यज्य (parityajya) - having abandoned; ययुः (yayuḥ) - they went; काष्ठाम् (kāṣṭhām) - direction; स्म (sma) - indeed; दक्षिणाम् (dakṣiṇām) - southern;]
(But those Daityas, being burned by the brilliance of that Agastya, having abandoned both worlds, indeed went to the southern direction.)
But those Daityas, scorched by the radiance of Agastya, abandoned both worlds and went to the southern direction. (13-140-9)
बलिस्तु यजते यज्ञमश्वमेधं महीं गतः। येऽन्ये स्वस्था महीस्थाश्च ते न दग्धा महासुराः ॥१३-१४०-१०॥
balis tu yajate yajñam aśvamedhaṃ mahīṃ gataḥ। ye ’nye svasthā mahī-sthāś ca te na dagdhā mahāsurāḥ ॥13-140-10॥
[बलिः (baliḥ) - Bali (proper noun); तु (tu) - but; indeed; यजते (yajate) - performs sacrifice; यज्ञम् (yajñam) - sacrifice; अश्वमेधम् (aśvamedham) - horse-sacrifice; महीं (mahīm) - the earth; गतः (gataḥ) - having gone; ये (ye) - who; अन्ये (anye) - others; स्वस्थाः (svasthāḥ) - situated in themselves; at ease; महींस्थाः (mahī-sthāḥ) - those who remain on earth; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - they; न (na) - not; दग्धाः (dagdhāḥ) - burnt; महासुराः (mahāsurāḥ) - great asuras (demons);]
(But Bali, having gone to the earth, performs the horse-sacrifice sacrifice. Those others who are at ease and those who remain on earth, those great asuras were not burnt.)
But Bali, having gone to the earth, performs the horse-sacrifice. The other great asuras who remain at ease on earth were not burnt. (13-140-10)
ततो लोकाः पुनः प्राप्ताः सुरैः शान्तं च तद्रजः। अथैनमब्रुवन्देवा भूमिष्ठानसुराञ्जहि ॥१३-१४०-११॥
tato lokāḥ punaḥ prāptāḥ suraiḥ śāntaṃ ca tad-rajaḥ. atha enam abruvan devā bhūmi-sthān asurān jahi ॥13-140-11॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; प्राप्ताः (prāptāḥ) - were attained; सुरैः (suraiḥ) - by the gods; शान्तं (śāntam) - calmed; च (ca) - and; तद्रजः (tad-rajaḥ) - that turmoil; अथ (atha) - then; एनम् (enam) - him; अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - (they) spoke; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; भूमिष्ठान् (bhūmi-sthān) - standing on the earth; असुरान् (asurān) - the asuras; जहि (jahi) - slay;]
(Then the worlds again were attained by the gods, and that turmoil was calmed. Then the gods spoke to him: "Slay the asuras standing on the earth." (13-140-11))
Then the gods regained the worlds and the turmoil was pacified. After that, the gods said to him: "Destroy the asuras who dwell on the earth." (13-140-11)
इत्युक्त आह देवान्स न शक्नोमि महीगतान्। दग्धुं तपो हि क्षीयेन्मे धक्ष्यामीति च पार्थिव ॥१३-१४०-१२॥
ity-ukta āha devān sa na śaknomi mahīgatān। dagdhuṃ tapo hi kṣīyen me dhakṣyāmīti ca pārthiva॥13-140-12॥
[इति-उक्त (iti-ukta) - thus-spoken; आह (āha) - said; देवान् (devān) - the gods; सः (saḥ) - he; न (na) - not; शक्नोमि (śaknomi) - I am able; मही-गतान् (mahī-gatān) - those gone to earth; दग्धुम् (dagdhuṃ) - to burn; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; हि (hi) - indeed; क्षीयेत् (kṣīyet) - would be diminished; मे (me) - my; धक्ष्यामि (dhakṣyāmi) - I will burn; इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king;]
(Thus having been spoken, he said to the gods: "I am not able to burn those gone to earth; for indeed, my austerity would be diminished, O king, thus I will burn.")
Having been thus addressed, he said to the gods: "I am not able to burn those who have gone to earth; for indeed, my austerity would be diminished, O king, thus I will burn." (13-140-12)
एवं दग्धा भगवता दानवाः स्वेन तेजसा। अगस्त्येन तदा राजंस्तपसा भावितात्मना ॥१३-१४०-१३॥
evaṁ dagdhā bhagavatā dānavāḥ svena tejasā। agastyena tadā rājaṁs tapasā bhāvitātmanā ॥13-140-13॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; दग्धा (dagdhā) - burned; भगवता (bhagavatā) - by the blessed one; दानवाः (dānavāḥ) - the Dānavas (demons); स्वेन (svena) - by (his) own; तेजसा (tejasā) - splendor; अगस्त्येन (agastyena) - by Agastya; तदा (tadā) - then; राजंन् (rājaṁs) - O king; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; भावितात्मना (bhāvitātmanā) - with a purified soul;]
(Thus, the Dānavas were burned by the blessed one by his own splendor; then, O king, by Agastya, by austerity, with a purified soul.)
Thus, O king, the Dānavas were burned by the blessed Agastya, who possessed his own splendor, through his austerity and purified soul. (13-140-13)
ईदृशश्चाप्यगस्त्यो हि कथितस्ते मयानघ। ब्रवीम्यहं ब्रूहि वा त्वमगस्त्यात्क्षत्रियं वरम् ॥१३-१४०-१४॥
īdṛśaś cāpy agastyo hi kathitas te mayānagha। bravīmy ahaṃ brūhi vā tvam agastyāt kṣatriyaṃ varam॥13-140-14॥
[ईदृशः (īdṛśaḥ) - of such kind; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अगस्त्यः (agastyaḥ) - Agastya; हि (hi) - indeed; कथितः (kathitaḥ) - has been told; ते (te) - to you; मया (mayā) - by me; अनघ (anagha) - O spotless one; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I tell; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; वा (vā) - or; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अगस्त्यात् (agastyāt) - from Agastya; क्षत्रियम् (kṣatriyam) - a Kṣatriya; वरम् (varam) - boon;]
(Of such kind and also Agastya indeed has been told to you by me, O spotless one; I tell or you tell the boon of a Kṣatriya from Agastya.)
Such an Agastya has also been described to you by me, O spotless one; I will tell, or you tell, about the boon of a Kṣatriya from Agastya. (13-140-14)

[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been addressed; स (sa) - he; तदा (tadā) - then; तूष्णीम् (tūṣṇīm) - in silence; अभूत् (abhūt) - became; वायुः (vāyuḥ) - Vāyu; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; राजन् (rājan) - O king; वसिष्ठस्य (vasiṣṭhasya) - of Vasiṣṭha; मुख्यं (mukhyaṃ) - chief; कर्म (karma) - deed; यशस्विनः (yaśasvinaḥ) - of the glorious one;]
(Thus addressed he then became silent, Vāyu then said: Hear, O king, the chief deed of the glorious Vasiṣṭha.)
When thus addressed, he became silent; then Vāyu spoke: "Listen, O king, to the chief deed of the illustrious Vasiṣṭha." (13-140-15)
आदित्याः सत्रमासन्त सरो वै मानसं प्रति। वसिष्ठं मनसा गत्वा श्रुत्वा तत्रास्य गोचरम् ॥१३-१४०-१६॥
ādityāḥ satram āsanta saro vai mānasaṃ prati। vasiṣṭhaṃ manasā gatvā śrutvā tatrāsya gocarām॥13-140-16॥
[आदित्याः (ādityāḥ) - Aditiyas; (the group of solar deities;) सत्रम् (satram) - sacrificial session; (ritual gathering;) आसन्त (āsanta) - were sitting; (remained;) सरः (saraḥ) - lake; वै (vai) - indeed; मानसं (mānasaṃ) - Mānasa; (proper noun; name of the lake) प्रति (prati) - towards; वसिष्ठम् (vasiṣṭham) - Vasiṣṭha; (proper noun; the sage Vasiṣṭha;) मनसा (manasā) - by mind; (with mind;) गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; तत्र (tatra) - there; अस्य (asya) - his; गोचरम् (gocaram) - domain; (field of perception; sphere; range;);]
(The Ādityas were sitting in sacrificial session towards Lake Mānasa. Having gone to Vasiṣṭha by mind, having heard there his sphere of perception.)
The Ādityas were conducting a sacrificial session near Lake Mānasa. By mind they reached Vasiṣṭha and heard there of his domain. (13-140-16)
यजमानांस्तु तान्दृष्ट्वा व्यग्रान्दीक्षानुकर्शितान्। हन्तुमिच्छन्ति शैलाभाः खलिनो नाम दानवाः ॥१३-१४०-१७॥
yajamānāṃs tu tān dṛṣṭvā vyagrān dīkṣānukarṣitān। hantum icchanti śailābhāḥ khalino nāma dānavāḥ ॥13-140-17॥
[यजमानान् (yajamānān) - sacrificers; तु (tu) - but; तान् (tān) - them; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; व्यग्रान् (vyagrān) - agitated; दीक्षा-अनुकर्शितान् (dīkṣā-anukarṣitān) - afflicted by initiation; हन्तुम् (hantum) - to slay; इच्छन्ति (icchanti) - (they) desire; शैलाभाः (śailābhāḥ) - mountain-like; खलिनः (khalinaḥ) - wicked; नाम (nāma) - named; दानवाः (dānavāḥ) - demons;]
(But having seen those sacrificers, agitated, afflicted by initiation, the mountain-like, wicked demons named Khalinas desire to slay (them).)
But on seeing those sacrificers in an agitated state, exhausted by the rites, the demons named Khalinas, who are mountain-like and wicked, wish to kill them. (13-140-17)
अदूरात्तु ततस्तेषां ब्रह्मदत्तवरं सरः। हता हता वै ते तत्र जीवन्त्याप्लुत्य दानवाः ॥१३-१४०-१८॥
adūrāttu tatasteṣāṃ brahmadattavaraṃ saraḥ। hatā hatā vai te tatra jīvantyāplutya dānavāḥ ॥13-140-18॥
[अदूरात् (adūrāt) - not far from; तु (tu) - however; ततः (tataḥ) - from there; तेषां (teṣām) - of them; ब्रह्मदत्तवरं (brahmadattavaram) - bestowed by Brahma; सरः (saraḥ) - lake; हता (hatā) - slain; हता (hatā) - slain; वै (vai) - indeed; ते (te) - they; तत्र (tatra) - there; जीवन्ति (jīvanti) - live; आप्लुत्य (āplutya) - having plunged into; दानवाः (dānavāḥ) - Dānavas (demons);]
(Not far however from there is a lake bestowed by Brahma of them. Slain, slain indeed, they there live, having plunged in, the Dānavas.)
However, not far from there is a lake granted by Brahma to them. The Dānavas who were thought to be slain are actually alive there, having plunged into it. (13-140-18)
ते प्रगृह्य महाघोरान्पर्वतान्परिघान्द्रुमान्। विक्षोभयन्तः सलिलमुत्थिताः शतयोजनम् ॥१३-१४०-१९॥
te pragṛhya mahāghorān parvatān parighān drumān। vikṣobhayantaḥ salilam utthitāḥ śatayojanam॥13-140-19॥
[ते (te) - they; प्रगृह्य (pragṛhya) - having seized; महाघोरान् (mahāghorān) - very terrible; पर्वतान् (parvatān) - mountains; परिघान् (parighān) - clubs; द्रुमान् (drumān) - trees; विक्षोभयन्तः (vikṣobhayantaḥ) - agitating; सलिलम् (salilam) - water; उत्थिताः (utthitāḥ) - having arisen; शतयोजनम् (śatayojanam) - a hundred yojanas;]
(They, having seized very terrible mountains, clubs, and trees, agitating the water, having arisen a hundred yojanas.)
They, having seized very terrible mountains, clubs, and trees, arose a hundred yojanas high, agitating the water. (13-140-19)
अभ्यद्रवन्त देवांस्ते सहस्राणि दशैव ह। ततस्तैरर्दिता देवाः शरणं वासवं ययुः ॥१३-१४०-२०॥
abhyadravanta devāṃs te sahasrāṇi daśaiva ha। tatas tair arditā devāḥ śaraṇaṃ vāsavaṃ yayuḥ ॥13-140-20॥
[अभ्यद्रवन्त (abhyadravanta) - they attacked; देवान् (devān) - the gods; ते (te) - those; सहस्राणि (sahasrāṇi) - thousands; दश (daśa) - ten; एव (eva) - indeed; ह (ha) - certainly; ततः (tataḥ) - then; तैः (taiḥ) - by them; अर्दिताः (arditāḥ) - oppressed; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; शरणम् (śaraṇam) - refuge; वासवम् (vāsavam) - to Vāsava (Indra); ययुः (yayuḥ) - they went;]
(Those thousands, indeed ten, certainly attacked the gods. Then, oppressed by them, the gods went to Vāsava (Indra) for refuge.)
Those very ten thousand certainly attacked the gods; then, being oppressed by them, the gods took refuge in Indra. (13-140-20)
स च तैर्व्यथितः शक्रो वसिष्ठं शरणं ययौ। ततोऽभयं ददौ तेभ्यो वसिष्ठो भगवानृषिः ॥१३-१४०-२१॥
sa ca tair vyathitaḥ śakro vasiṣṭhaṃ śaraṇaṃ yayau। tato'bhayaṃ dadau tebhyo vasiṣṭho bhagavān ṛṣiḥ ॥13-140-21॥
[स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; तैः (taiḥ) - by them; व्यथितः (vyathitaḥ) - distressed; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Śakra (Indra); वसिष्ठं (vasiṣṭham) - Vasiṣṭha (the sage); शरणं (śaraṇam) - refuge; ययौ (yayau) - (he) went; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अभयम् (abhayam) - fearlessness; ददौ (dadau) - (he) gave; तेभ्यः (tebhyaḥ) - to them; वसिष्ठः (vasiṣṭhaḥ) - Vasiṣṭha; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the illustrious; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage;]
(He and by them distressed, Śakra went to Vasiṣṭha for refuge. Then, fearlessness gave to them, Vasiṣṭha, the illustrious sage.)
And he, distressed by them, Śakra (Indra), went to Vasiṣṭha for refuge. Then, Vasiṣṭha, the illustrious sage, granted them fearlessness. (13-140-21)
तथा तान्दुःखिताञ्जानन्नानृशंस्यपरो मुनिः। अयत्नेनादहत्सर्वान्खलिनः स्वेन तेजसा ॥१३-१४०-२२॥
tathā tān duḥkhitān jānann ānṛśaṁsyaparo muniḥ। ayatnenādahatsarvān khalinaḥ svena tejasā ॥13-140-22॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; तान् (tān) - them; दुःखितान् (duḥkhitān) - distressed; जानन् (jānann) - knowing; आनृशंस्यपरः (ānṛśaṁsyaparaḥ) - devoted to compassion; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; अयत्नेन (ayatnena) - without effort; अदहत् (adahat) - burned; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; खलिनः (khalinaḥ) - wicked ones; स्वेन (svena) - with his own; तेजसा (tejasā) - by energy;]
(Thus, them distressed knowing, devoted to compassion the sage, without effort burned all wicked ones with his own energy.)
Thus, knowing them to be distressed, the compassionate sage, without any effort, burned all the wicked ones with his own energy. (13-140-22)
कैलासं प्रस्थितां चापि नदीं गङ्गां महातपाः। आनयत्तत्सरो दिव्यं तया भिन्नं च तत्सरः ॥१३-१४०-२३॥
kailāsaṃ prasthitāṃ cāpi nadīṃ gaṅgāṃ mahātapāḥ। ānayattatsaro divyaṃ tayā bhinnaṃ ca tatsaraḥ॥13-140-23॥
[कैलासं (kailāsaṃ) - Kailāsa (the mountain); प्रस्थितां (prasthitāṃ) - departed; set out; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; even; नदीं (nadīṃ) - the river; गङ्गां (gaṅgāṃ) - Gaṅgā; महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - the great ascetic; आनयत् (ānayat) - brought; led; तत्सरः (tatsaraḥ) - that lake; दिव्यं (divyaṃ) - divine; तया (tayā) - by her; भिन्नं (bhinnaṃ) - split; broken; च (ca) - and; तत्सरः (tatsaraḥ) - that lake;]
(Kailāsa departed and also the river Gaṅgā, the great ascetic brought; that lake divine by her split and that lake.)
The great ascetic brought the river Gaṅgā, who had set forth toward Kailāsa; that divine lake was split by her, and that lake (was thus formed). (13-140-23)
सरो भिन्नं तया नद्या सरयूः सा ततोऽभवत्। हताश्च खलिनो यत्र स देशः खलिनोऽभवत् ॥१३-१४०-२४॥
saro bhinnaṃ tayā nadyā sarayūḥ sā tato'bhavat। hatāśca khalino yatra sa deśaḥ khalino'bhavat॥13-140-24॥
[सरो (saraḥ) - lake; भिन्नं (bhinnaṃ) - broken; तया (tayā) - by her; नद्या (nadyā) - by the river; सरयूः (sarayūḥ) - Sarayu (proper noun; name of a river); सा (sā) - she (that); ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; हताः (hatāḥ) - destroyed; च (ca) - and; खलिनः (khalinaḥ) - wicked ones; यत्र (yatra) - where; स (sa) - that; देशः (deśaḥ) - region; खलिनः (khalinaḥ) - wicked ones; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]
(Lake broken by her, by the river, Sarayu she thereafter became. Destroyed and wicked ones where that region wicked ones became.)
When the lake was broken by her, by the river, she then became Sarayu. And where the wicked were destroyed, that region became of the wicked. (13-140-24)
एवं सेन्द्रा वसिष्ठेन रक्षितास्त्रिदिवौकसः। ब्रह्मदत्तवराश्चैव हता दैत्या महात्मना ॥१३-१४०-२५॥
evaṃ sendrā vasiṣṭhena rakṣitās tridivaukasaḥ. brahmadatta-varāś caiva hatā daityā mahātmanā ॥13-140-25॥
[एवम् (evaṃ) - thus; स-इन्द्राः (sa-indrāḥ) - with Indra; वसिष्ठेन (vasiṣṭhena) - by Vasiṣṭha; रक्षिताः (rakṣitāḥ) - protected; त्रिदिवौकसः (tridivaukasaḥ) - the inhabitants of heaven; ब्रह्मदत्तवराः (brahmadatta-varāḥ) - those endowed with boons given by Brahmā; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; हता (hatā) - were slain; दैत्या (daityā) - the Daityas (demons); महात्मना (mahātmanā) - by the great-souled one;]
(Thus, with Indra, by Vasiṣṭha protected the inhabitants of heaven. Those endowed with boons by Brahmā, indeed, the Daityas were slain by the great-souled one.)
Thus, the inhabitants of heaven, along with Indra, were protected by Vasiṣṭha; those Daityas who had received boons from Brahmā were also slain by the great-souled one. (13-140-25)
एतत्कर्म वसिष्ठस्य कथितं ते मयानघ। ब्रवीम्यहं ब्रूहि वा त्वं वसिष्ठात्क्षत्रियं वरम् ॥१३-१४०-२६॥
etat karma vasiṣṭhasya kathitaṃ te mayānagha। bravīmy ahaṃ brūhi vā tvaṃ vasiṣṭhāt kṣatriyaṃ varam॥13-140-26॥
[एतत् (etat) (etat) - this; कर्म (karma) (karma) - act; वसिष्ठस्य (vasiṣṭhasya) (vasiṣṭhasya) - of Vasiṣṭha; कथितं (kathitam) (kathitaṃ) - told; ते (te) (te) - to you; मया (mayā) (mayā) - by me; अनघ (anagha) (anagha) - O sinless one; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) (bravīmi) - I declare; अहं (ahaṃ) (ahaṃ) - I; ब्रूहि (brūhi) (brūhi) - tell; वा (vā) (vā) - or; त्वं (tvaṃ) (tvaṃ) - you; वसिष्ठात् (vasiṣṭhāt) (vasiṣṭhāt) - from Vasiṣṭha; क्षत्रियम् (kṣatriyam) (kṣatriyam) - a kṣatriya; वरम् (varam) (varam) - a boon;]
(This act of Vasiṣṭha told to you by me, O sinless one. I declare, or you tell, from Vasiṣṭha a boon for a kṣatriya.)
This deed of Vasiṣṭha has been told to you by me, O sinless one. I have spoken; or, if you wish, you may ask Vasiṣṭha for a boon fitting for a kṣatriya. (13-140-26)
