इत्युक्तस्त्वर्जुनस्तूष्णीमभूद्वायुस्तमब्रवीत्। शृणु मे हैहयश्रेष्ठ कर्मात्रेः सुमहात्मनः ॥१३-१४१-१॥
ity-uktas tvarjunas tūṣṇīm abhūd vāyus tam abravīt। śṛṇu me haihaya-śreṣṭha karmātreḥ sumahātmanaḥ॥13-141-1॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been spoken; तु (tu) - but; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; तूष्णीम् (tūṣṇīm) - silent; अभूत् (abhūt) - became; वायुः (vāyuḥ) - Vāyu; तम् (tam) - to him; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; मे (me) - my; हैहयश्रेष्ठ (haihaya-śreṣṭha) - O best of the Haihayas; कर्म (karma) - deed; आत्रेः (ātreḥ) - of Ātreya; सुमहात्मनः (sumahātmanaḥ) - of the very great-souled;]
(Thus having been spoken, but Arjuna became silent, Vāyu said to him: "Hear my, O best of the Haihayas, the deed of Ātreya, of the very great-souled." (13-141-1))
When thus spoken to, Arjuna became silent, and Vāyu said to him: "Listen, O best of the Haihayas, to my account of the action of Ātreya, the most high-souled." (13-141-1)
घोरे तमस्ययुध्यन्त सहिता देवदानवाः। अविध्यत शरैस्तत्र स्वर्भानुः सोमभास्करौ ॥१३-१४१-२॥
ghore tamasyayudhyanta sahitā devadānavāḥ। avidhyata śaraistatra svarbhānuḥ somabhāskarau॥13-141-2॥
[घोरे (ghore) - in the terrible; तमस्य (tamasya) - darkness; युध्यन्त (yudhyanta) - were fighting; सहिता (sahitā) - together; देवदानवाः (devadānavāḥ) - gods and demons; अविध्यत (avidhyata) - she/he/it pierced; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows; तत्र (tatra) - there; स्वर्भानुः (svarbhānuḥ) - Svarbhanu; सोमभास्करौ (somabhāskarau) - Soma and Bhaskara;]
(In the terrible darkness, gods and demons together were fighting. There, Svarbhanu pierced Soma and Bhaskara with arrows.)
In the dreadful darkness, the gods and demons fought together. At that place, Svarbhanu struck Soma and Bhaskara with arrows. (13-141-2)
अथ ते तमसा ग्रस्ता निहन्यन्ते स्म दानवैः। देवा नृपतिशार्दूल सहैव बलिभिस्तदा ॥१३-१४१-३॥
atha te tamasā grastā nihan-yante sma dānavaiḥ। devā nṛpati-śārdūla sahaiva balibhis-tadā॥13-141-3॥
[अथ (atha) - then; ते (te) - they; तमसा (tamasā) - by darkness; ग्रस्ता (grastā) - seized; निहन्यन्ते (nihanyante) - were being slain; स्म (sma) - indeed; दानवैः (dānavaiḥ) - by the Dānavas; देवा (devāḥ) - the gods; नृपतिशार्दूल (nṛpati-śārdūla) - O tiger among kings; सहैव (sahaiva) - along with; बलिभिः (balibhiḥ) - by (their) strengths/forceful ones; तदा (tadā) - at that time;]
(Then they, seized by darkness, were being slain indeed by the Dānavas; the gods, O tiger among kings, at that time along with the strong ones.)
Then, O tiger among kings, the gods—seized by darkness—were being slain by the Dānavas at that time, along with their mighty forces. (13-141-3)
असुरैर्वध्यमानास्ते क्षीणप्राणा दिवौकसः। अपश्यन्त तपस्यन्तमत्रिं विप्रं महावने ॥१३-१४१-४॥
asurair-vadhyamānās te kṣīṇaprāṇā divaukasaḥ। apaśyanta tapasyantam atriṃ vipraṃ mahāvane ॥13-141-4॥
[असुरैः (asuraiḥ) - by asuras; वध्यमानाः (vadhyamānāḥ) - being killed; ते (te) - they; क्षीणप्राणाः (kṣīṇaprāṇāḥ) - with life diminished; दिवौकसः (divaukasaḥ) - the inhabitants of heaven; अपश्यन्त (apaśyanta) - saw; तपस्यन्तम् (tapasyantam) - engaged in austerity; अत्रिम् (atriṃ) - Atri; विप्रं (vipraṃ) - sage; महावने (mahāvane) - in the great forest;]
(By asuras being killed, they with life diminished, the inhabitants of heaven, saw Atri sage engaged in austerity in the great forest.)
While being slain by the asuras, the inhabitants of heaven, their lives almost spent, saw the sage Atri practicing austerity in the great forest. (13-141-4)
अथैनमब्रुवन्देवाः शान्तक्रोधं जितेन्द्रियम्। असुरैरिषुभिर्विद्धौ चन्द्रादित्याविमावुभौ ॥१३-१४१-५॥
athainam abruvan devāḥ śānta-krodhaṃ jitendriyam। asuraiḥ iṣubhiḥ viddhau candra-ādityau imau ubhau ॥13-141-5॥
[अथ (atha) - then; एनम् (enam) - him; अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - said; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; शान्तक्रोधं (śānta-krodham) - whose anger is calmed; जितेन्द्रियम् (jitendriyam) - who has mastered the senses; असुरैः (asuraiḥ) - by the asuras; इषुभिः (iṣubhiḥ) - with arrows; विद्धौ (viddhau) - wounded; चन्द्र (candra) - the Moon; आदित्यौ (ādityau) - and the Sun; इमौ (imau) - these two; उभौ (ubhau) - both;]
(Then the gods said to him whose anger is calmed and who has mastered the senses: "By the asuras with arrows are wounded the Moon and the Sun, these two both.")
Then the gods spoke to him, whose anger was calmed and whose senses were conquered: "Both the Moon and the Sun, these two, have been wounded by the asuras with arrows." (13-141-5)
वयं वध्यामहे चापि शत्रुभिस्तमसावृते। नाधिगच्छाम शान्तिं च भयात्त्रायस्व नः प्रभो ॥१३-१४१-६॥
vayaṃ vadhyāmahe cāpi śatrubhis tamasāvṛte। nādhigacchāma śāntiṃ ca bhayāt trāyasva naḥ prabho ॥13-141-6॥
[वयं (vayaṃ) - we; वध्यामहे (vadhyāmahe) - are being destroyed; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; शत्रुभिः (śatrubhiḥ) - by enemies; तमसा (tamasā) - by darkness; आवृते (āvṛte) - enveloped; न (na) - not; अधिगच्छाम (adhigacchāma) - do we attain; शान्तिं (śāntiṃ) - peace; च (ca) - and; भयात् (bhayāt) - from fear; त्रायस्व (trāyasva) - protect; नः (naḥ) - us; प्रभो (prabho) - O Lord;]
(We are being destroyed also by enemies enveloped in darkness; we do not attain peace, and from fear, protect us, O Lord.)

कथं रक्षामि भवतस्तेऽब्रुवंश्चन्द्रमा भव। तिमिरघ्नश्च सविता दस्युहा चैव नो भव ॥१३-१४१-७॥
kathaṁ rakṣāmi bhavatas te 'bruvaṁś candramā bhava। timiraghnaś ca savitā dasyuhā caiva no bhava ॥13-141-7॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; रक्षामि (rakṣāmi) - I protect; भवत: (bhavataḥ) - of you; ते (te) - your; अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - they spoke; चन्द्रमा (candramā) - the Moon; भव (bhava) - be; तिमिरघ्नः (timiraghnaḥ) - destroyer of darkness; च (ca) - and; सविता (savitā) - the Sun; दस्युहा (dasyuhā) - destroyer of evil-doers; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; नः (naḥ) - for us; भव (bhava) - be;]
(How (can) I protect your [things]—they spoke: "Be the Moon; and also be the Sun, destroyer of darkness, and indeed become the destroyer of evil-doers for us." (13-141-7))
How can I protect what belongs to you? They said: "Become the Moon; also become the Sun who destroys darkness, and indeed become the destroyer of evil-doers for us." (13-141-7)
एवमुक्तस्तदात्रिस्तु तमोनुदभवच्छशी। अपश्यत्सौम्यभावं च सूर्यस्य प्रतिदर्शनम् ॥१३-१४१-८॥
evam uktas tadā tristu tamonuda abhavat śaśī। apaśyat saumya-bhāvaṃ ca sūryasya pratidarśanam ॥13-141-8॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been addressed; तदा (tadā) - then; त्रिः (triḥ) - thrice (three times); तु (tu) - but; तमोनुद (tamonuda) - remover of darkness; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; शशी (śaśī) - the Moon; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - saw; सौम्यभावं (saumya-bhāvam) - gentle form; च (ca) - and; सूर्यस्य (sūryasya) - of the Sun; प्रतिदर्शनम् (pratidarśanam) - the appearance;]
(Thus having been addressed, then thrice but the remover of darkness became the Moon. He saw the gentle form and the appearance of the Sun.)
Thus, being addressed so, at that time the Moon, the remover of darkness, became thrice as bright. He saw the gentle form and the appearance of the Sun. (13-141-8)
दृष्ट्वा नातिप्रभं सोमं तथा सूर्यं च पार्थिव। प्रकाशमकरोदत्रिस्तपसा स्वेन संयुगे ॥१३-१४१-९॥
dṛṣṭvā nāti-prabhaṃ somaṃ tathā sūryaṃ ca pārthiva। prakāśam akarot atris tapasā svena saṃyuge ॥13-141-9॥
[दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; नातिप्रभं (nāti-prabhaṃ) - not very bright; सोमं (somaṃ) - Soma (the Moon); तथा (tathā) - likewise; सूर्यं (sūryaṃ) - Sun; च (ca) - and; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O King; प्रकाशम् (prakāśam) - brightness; अकरोत् (akarot) - made; अत्रिः (atriḥ) - Atri (proper name); तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; स्वेन (svena) - with his own; संयुगे (saṃyuge) - in the contest;]
(Having seen not very bright Soma, likewise the Sun and O King, brightness Atri made by his own austerity in the contest.)
O King, seeing that Soma and likewise the Sun were not very bright, Atri made them shine with brightness by his own austerity in the contest. (13-141-9)
जगद्वितिमिरं चापि प्रदीप्तमकरोत्तदा। व्यजयच्छत्रुसङ्घांश्च देवानां स्वेन तेजसा ॥१३-१४१-१०॥
jagadvitimiraṃ cāpi pradīptamakarottadā। vyayacchatrusaṅghāṃśca devānāṃ svena tejasā॥13-141-10॥
[जगद्वितिमिरं (jagad-vitimiraṃ) - the darkness covering the world; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; प्रदीप्तम् (pradīptam) - illuminated; अकरोत् (akarot) - he made; तदा (tadā) - then; विजयत् (vyayac) - dispelled; शत्रुसङ्घान् (śatru-saṅghān) - groups of enemies; च (ca) - and; देवानां (devānāṃ) - of the gods; स्वेन (svena) - with one's own; तेजसा (tejasā) - radiance;]
(The darkness covering the world also he then illuminated, made. He dispelled groups of enemies of the gods with his own radiance.)

अत्रिणा दह्यमानांस्तान्दृष्ट्वा देवा महासुरान्। पराक्रमैस्तेऽपि तदा व्यत्यघ्नन्नत्रिरक्षिताः ॥१३-१४१-११॥
atriṇā dahyamānāṃstāndṛṣṭvā devā mahāsurān। parākramaist'e'pi tadā vyatyaghnann atrirakṣitāḥ ॥13-141-11॥
[अत्रिणा (atriṇā) - by Atri; (instrumental singular); दह्यमानान् (dahyamānān) - being burned; (present passive participle accusative plural); तान् (tān) - those; (accusative plural); दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; (absolutive); देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; (nominative plural); महासुरान् (mahāsurān) - the great Asuras; (accusative plural); पराक्रमैः (parākramaiḥ) - by prowess; (instrumental plural); ते (te) - they; (nominative plural); अपि (api) - also; तदा (tadā) - then; व्यत्यघ्नन् (vyatyaghnan) - struck back; (imperfect, 3rd person plural); अत्रिरक्षिताः (atrirakṣitāḥ) - protected by Atri; (nominative plural);]
(By Atri, those being burned, having seen, the gods the great Asuras by prowess they also then struck back protected by Atri.)
Seeing the great Asuras being burned by Atri, the gods, protected by Atri, also then struck back at them by their prowess. (13-141-11)
उद्भासितश्च सविता देवास्त्राता हतासुराः। अत्रिणा त्वथ सोमत्वं कृतमुत्तमतेजसा ॥१३-१४१-१२॥
udbhāsitaś ca savitā devāstrātā hatāsurāḥ. atriṇā tv atha somatvaṃ kṛtam uttamatejasā ॥13-141-12॥
[उद्भासितः (udbhāsitaḥ) - made manifest; shining; illuminated; च (ca) - and; सविता (savitā) - Savitṛ (the Sun); देवः (devaḥ) - god; त्राता (trātā) - protector; savior; हतासुराः (hatāsurāḥ) - (he) whose enemies (asuras) are slain; अत्रिणा (atriṇā) - by Atri; त्व (tv) - indeed; अथ (atha) - then; सोमत्वं (somatvaṃ) - the state of Soma; 'Soma-ness'; कृतम् (kṛtam) - made; effected; उत्तमतेजसा (uttamatejasā) - by supreme brightness;]
(And Savitṛ, the god, radiant, protector, whose enemies (asuras) are slain. By Atri, indeed then, the state of Soma was effected by supreme brightness.)
And Savitṛ, the radiant god, the protector whose enemies were destroyed, by Atri indeed, then, the state of Soma was brought about through his supreme brilliance. (13-141-12)
अद्वितीयेन मुनिना जपता चर्मवाससा। फलभक्षेण राजर्षे पश्य कर्मात्रिणा कृतम् ॥१३-१४१-१३॥
advitīyena muninā japatā carmavāsasā। phalabhakṣeṇa rājarṣe paśya karmātriṇā kṛtam ॥13-141-13॥
[अद्वितीयेन (advitīyena) - by the unparalleled; by the unique; मुनिना (muninā) - by the sage; जपता (japatā) - reciting (mantras); चर्मवाससा (carmavāsasā) - wearing a hide; फलभक्षेण (phalabhakṣeṇa) - only eater of fruits; राजर्षे (rājarṣe) - O royal sage; पश्य (paśya) - see; कर्मात्रिणा (karmātriṇā) - by the one who has crossed actions; by the deedless; कृतम् (kṛtam) - (what is) done;]
(By the unparalleled sage, reciting (mantras), wearing a hide, eating only fruit, O royal sage, see what is done by the one who has crossed actions.)
O royal sage, see what has been accomplished by the unique sage, reciting (mantras), clad in skin, and subsisting on fruit – one who has transcended actions. (13-141-13)
तस्यापि विस्तरेणोक्तं कर्मात्रेः सुमहात्मनः। ब्रवीम्यहं ब्रूहि वा त्वमत्रितः क्षत्रियं वरम् ॥१३-१४१-१४॥
tasyāpi vistareṇoktaṃ karmātreḥ sumahātmanāḥ। bravīmyahaṃ brūhi vā tvam atritaḥ kṣatriyaṃ varam॥13-141-14॥
[तस्यापि (tasyāpi) - of him also; विस्तरेण (vistareṇa) - in detail; उक्तं (uktaṃ) - said; कर्म (karma) - deed; आत्रेः (ātreḥ) - of Atri; सुमहात्मनः (sumahātmanāḥ) - of the greatly high-souled; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I speak; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - speak; वा (vā) - or; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अत्रितः (atritaḥ) - from Atri; क्षत्रियं (kṣatriyam) - Kṣatriya; वरम् (varam) - the best;]
(Of him also, in detail, the deed said by Atri, of the greatly high-souled, I speak; I, or you speak, from Atri, the best Kṣatriya.)
I will also tell in detail the deed relating to Atri, the greatly high-souled; either I will speak or you speak, O best Kṣatriya from the line of Atri. (13-141-14)
इत्युक्तस्त्वर्जुनस्तूष्णीमभूद्वायुस्तमब्रवीत्। शृणु राजन्महत्कर्म च्यवनस्य महात्मनः ॥१३-१४१-१५॥

(Thus having been spoken, but Arjuna became silent, Vāyu said to him, "Listen, O King, to the great deed of Cyavana the great-souled." (13-141-15))
After these words, Arjuna became silent, and Vāyu said to him, "Listen, O King, to the great deed of the great-souled Cyavana." (13-141-15)
अश्विनोः प्रतिसंश्रुत्य च्यवनः पाकशासनम्। प्रोवाच सहितं देवैः सोमपावश्विनौ कुरु ॥१३-१४१-१६॥
aśvinoḥ pratisaṁśrutya cyavanaḥ pākaśāsanam। provāca sahitaṁ devaiḥ somapāvaśvinau kuru ॥13-141-16॥
[अश्विनोः (aśvinoḥ) - of the Aśvins; प्रतिसंश्रुत्य (pratisaṁśrutya) - having agreed (with one another or on behalf of); च्यवनः (cyavanaḥ) - Cyavana; पाकशासनम् (pākaśāsanam) - to Pākaśāsana (epithet of Indra, lord of sacrifices); प्रोवाच (provāca) - said; सहितं (sahitaṁ) - along with; देवैः (devaiḥ) - with the gods; सोमपावश्विनौ (somapāvaśvinau) - the two Aśvins, drinkers of Soma; कुरु (kuru) - do, make;]
(Having agreed with the Aśvins, Cyavana spoke to Pākaśāsana; along with the gods, do (it), O Aśvins, drinkers of Soma.)
Having come to an agreement with the Aśvins, Cyavana addressed Indra (Pākaśāsana), saying, "Together with the gods, let the two Aśvins, drinkers of Soma, do (this)." (13-141-16)

अस्माभिर्वर्जितावेतौ भवेतां सोमपौ कथम्। देवैर्न संमितावेतौ तस्मान्मैवं वदस्व नः ॥१३-१४१-१७॥
asmābhir varjitāvetau bhavetāṃ somapau katham। devair na saṃmitāvetau tasmān maivaṃ vadasva naḥ ॥13-141-17॥
[अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; वर्जितौ (varjitau) - excluded; एतौ (etau) - these two; भवेताम् (bhavetām) - may be; सोमपौ (somapau) - Soma-drinkers; कथम् (katham) - how; देवैः (devaiḥ) - by the gods; न (na) - not; संमितौ (saṃmitau) - regarded as equal; एतौ (etau) - these two; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; म (ma) - do not; एवम् (evaṃ) - thus; वदस्व (vadasva) - speak (to us); नः (naḥ) - to us;]
(By us excluded these two may be, Soma-drinkers, how? By the gods, not regarded as equal these two; therefore, do not thus speak to us.)
How can these two, who are excluded by us, be Soma-drinkers? These two are not considered equal by the gods; therefore, do not speak to us in this way. (13-141-17)
अश्विभ्यां सह नेच्छामः पातुं सोमं महाव्रत। पिबन्त्वन्ये यथाकामं नाहं पातुमिहोत्सहे ॥१३-१४१-१८॥
aśvibhyāṁ saha neccāmaḥ pātuṁ somaṁ mahāvrata। pibantvanye yathākāmaṁ nāhaṁ pātumihotsahe ॥13-141-18॥
[अश्विभ्यां (aśvibhyām) - with the Aśvins; सह (saha) - together with; न (na) - not; इच्छामः (icchāmaḥ) - we wish; पातुं (pātuṁ) - to drink; सोमं (somaṁ) - soma; महाव्रत (mahāvrata) - O great-vrata (great vow); पिबन्तु (pibantu) - let them drink; अन्ये (anye) - others; यथाकामं (yathākāmaṁ) - as they desire; न (na) - not; अहं (ahaṁ) - I; पातुम् (pātum) - to drink; इह (iha) - here; उत्सहे (utsahe) - am able;]
(With the Aśvins together, not do we wish to drink soma, O great-vrata. Let others drink as they desire; not I to drink here am able.)
O Mahāvraṭa, we do not wish to drink soma together with the Aśvins. Let others drink as they wish; but I am not able to drink it here. (13-141-18)

न चेत्करिष्यसि वचो मयोक्तं बलसूदन। मया प्रमथितः सद्यः सोमं पास्यसि वै मखे ॥१३-१४१-१९॥
na cet kariṣyasi vaco mayoktaṃ balasūdana। mayā pramathitaḥ sadyaḥ somaṃ pāsyasi vai makhe ॥13-141-19॥
[न (na) - not; चेत् (cet) - if; करिष्यसि (kariṣyasi) - (you) will do; वचः (vacaḥ) - word; मयोक्‍तम् (mayoktam) - spoken by me; बलसूदन (balasūdana) - O slayer of Bāla (strong one); मया (mayā) - by me; प्रमथितः (pramathitaḥ) - vanquished; सद्यः (sadyaḥ) - immediately; सोमम् (somam) - Soma (the ritual drink); पास्यसि (pāsyasi) - you will drink; वै (vai) - indeed; मखे (makhe) - in the sacrifice;]
(Not if you will do the word spoken by me, O Bāla-slayer, by me vanquished immediately Soma you will drink indeed in the sacrifice.)
O slayer of Bāla, if you do not carry out the words spoken by me, then, being overpowered by me, you will immediately drink Soma indeed at the sacrifice. (13-141-19)
ततः कर्म समारब्धं हिताय सहसाश्विनोः। च्यवनेन ततो मन्त्रैरभिभूताः सुराभवन् ॥१३-१४१-२०॥
tataḥ karma samārabdhaṃ hitāya sahasāśvinōḥ। cyavanēna tatō mantrairabhibhūtāḥ surābhavan ॥13-141-20॥

(Then action undertaken for the benefit suddenly of the two Aśvins by Cyavana, then with mantras, overcome, the gods became.)
Then, an action was undertaken for the benefit of the two Aśvins; by Cyavana, the gods were overcome with mantras at that time. (13-141-20)
तत्तु कर्म समारब्धं दृष्ट्वेन्द्रः क्रोधमूर्छितः। उद्यम्य विपुलं शैलं च्यवनं समुपाद्रवत् ॥ तथा वज्रेण भगवानमर्षाकुललोचनः ॥१३-१४१-२१॥
tattu karma samārabdhaṁ dṛṣṭvendraḥ krodhamūrcchitaḥ। udyamya vipulaṁ śailaṁ cyavanaṁ samupādravat ॥ tathā vajreṇa bhagavānamarṣākulalocanaḥ ॥13-141-21॥
[तत् (tat) - that; तु (tu) - but; कर्म (karma) - action; समारब्धं (samārabdham) - begun; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; इन्द्रः (indraḥ) - Indra; क्रोधमूर्छितः (krodhamūrcchitaḥ) - overwhelmed by anger; उद्यम्य (udyamya) - having lifted up; विपुलं (vipulaṁ) - huge; शैलं (śailam) - mountain; च्यवनं (cyavanam) - Cyavana; समुपाद्रवत् (samupādravat) - approached closely; तथा (tathā) - likewise; वज्रेण (vajreṇa) - with the thunderbolt; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Lord; अमर्षाकुललोचनः (amarṣākulalocanaḥ) - with eyes filled with impatience;]
(But that action having been begun, having seen, Indra overwhelmed by anger, having lifted up the huge mountain, approached Cyavana closely. Likewise, with the thunderbolt, the Lord with eyes filled with impatience.)
But seeing that action having been begun, Indra, overwhelmed by anger, lifted up the huge mountain and approached Cyavana. Likewise, the Lord, his eyes filled with impatience, advanced with his thunderbolt. (13-141-21)
तमापतन्तं दृष्ट्वैव च्यवनस्तपसान्वितः। अद्भिः सिक्त्वास्तम्भयत्तं सवज्रं सहपर्वतम् ॥१३-१४१-२२॥
tam āpatantaṃ dṛṣṭvaiva cyavanaḥ tapasānvitaḥ। adbhiḥ siktvā stambhayat taṃ savajraṃ sahaparvatam ॥13-141-22॥
[तम् (tam) - him; आपतन्तम् (āpatantam) - falling (down); दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; एव (eva) - indeed; च्यवनः (cyavanaḥ) - Cyavana; तपसा अन्वितः (tapasā anvitaḥ) - endowed with austerity; अद्भिः (adbhiḥ) - with water; सिक्त्वा (siktvā) - having sprinkled; अस्तम्भयत् (stambhayat) - checked; तम् (tam) - that; सवज्रम् (savajram) - with the thunderbolt; सहपर्वतम् (sahaparvatam) - along with the mountain;]
(Having seen him (Indra) falling, Cyavana, endowed with austerity, having sprinkled with water, checked that (falling mass) with the thunderbolt along with the mountain.)
When Cyavana, possessed of austerity, saw him falling, he sprinkled (it) with water and stopped that, thunderbolt and mountain together. (13-141-22)
अथेन्द्रस्य महाघोरं सोऽसृजच्छत्रुमेव ह। मदं मन्त्राहुतिमयं व्यादितास्यं महामुनिः ॥१३-१४१-२३॥
athendrasya mahāghoraṃ so'sṛjakchatrumeva ha। madaṃ mantrāhutimayaṃ vyāditāsyaṃ mahāmuniḥ ॥13-141-23॥
[अथ (atha) - then; इन्द्रस्य (indrasya) - of Indra; महाघोरं (mahāghoram) - very terrific; सः (saḥ) - he; असृजत् (asṛjat) - created; शत्रुम् एव (śatrum eva) - enemy indeed; ह (ha) - certainly; मदम् (madam) - intoxication; मन्त्र-अहिति-मयम् (mantra-ahuti-mayam) - consisting of the oblation of mantras; व्यादित-आस्यं (vyādita-āsyaṃ) - with mouth wide open; महामुनिः (mahāmuniḥ) - the great sage;]
(Then of Indra, a very terrific enemy indeed, he created, certainly; intoxication, consisting of the oblation of mantras, with mouth wide open, the great sage.)
Then the great sage created for Indra a very terrible enemy—intoxication, formed from sacrificial oblations and mantras, with a gaping mouth. (13-141-23)
तस्य दन्तसहस्रं तु बभूव शतयोजनम्। द्वियोजनशतास्तस्य दंष्ट्राः परमदारुणाः ॥ हनुस्तस्याभवद्भूमावेकश्चास्यास्पृशद्दिवम् ॥१३-१४१-२४॥
tasya dantasahasraṁ tu babhūva śatayojanam। dviyojanaśatās tasya daṁṣṭrāḥ paramadāruṇāḥ ॥ hanus tasyābhavad bhūmāvekaś cāsyāspṛśad divam ॥13-141-24॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; his; दन्तसहस्रं (dantasahasram) - thousand of teeth; तु (tu) - but; बभूव (babhūva) - was; became; शतयोजनम् (śatayojanam) - hundred yojana (length); द्वियोजनशताः (dviyojanaśatāḥ) - two hundred yojana (long); तस्य (tasya) - of him; his; दंष्ट्राः (daṁṣṭrāḥ) - fangs; परमदारुणाः (paramadāruṇāḥ) - very terrible; हनुः (hanuḥ) - jaw; तस्य (tasya) - of him; his; अभवत् (abhavat) - was; became; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the earth; एकः (ekaḥ) - one; च (ca) - and; आस्य (āsya) - mouth; अस्पृशत् (aspṛśat) - touched; दिवम् (divam) - the sky;]
(Of him, a thousand teeth but became a hundred yojanas (long). Two hundred yojanas his fangs, very terrible. His jaw was on the earth, and one (part) of his mouth touched the sky.)
He had a thousand teeth, each a hundred yojanas long; his fangs were two hundred yojanas and very terrible. His jaw rested on the earth, and one side of his mouth touched the sky. (13-141-24)
जिह्वामूले स्थितास्तस्य सर्वे देवाः सवासवाः। तिमेरास्यमनुप्राप्ता यथा मत्स्या महार्णवे ॥१३-१४१-२५॥
jihvāmūle sthitās tasya sarve devāḥ savāsavāḥ। timera-āsyaṃ anuprāptā yathā matsyā mahārṇave ॥13-141-25॥
[जिह्वामूले (jihvāmūle) - at the root of the tongue; स्थिताः (sthitāḥ) - situated; तस्य (tasya) - of him; (his) सर्वे (sarve) - all; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; सवासवाः (savāsavāḥ) - along with the Vasus and Indra; तिमेरास्यम् (timera-āsyaṃ) - the mouth of a sea-monster; अनुप्राप्ता (anuprāptā) - entered; यथा (yathā) - just as; मत्स्याः (matsyāḥ) - fishes; महार्णवे (mahārṇave) - in the great ocean;]
(At the root of his tongue all gods along with Vasus and Indra are situated, entered into the mouth of a sea-monster, just as fishes in the great ocean.)
All the gods, including the Vasus and Indra, are stationed at the root of his tongue, having entered the mouth of the sea-monster, just as fish in the great ocean. (13-141-25)
ते संमन्त्र्य ततो देवा मदस्यास्यगतास्तदा। अब्रुवन्सहिताः शक्रं प्रणमास्मै द्विजातये ॥ अश्विभ्यां सह सोमं च पिबामो विगतज्वराः ॥१३-१४१-२६॥
te saṁmantrya tato devā madasyāsyagatāstadā। abruvansahitāḥ śakraṁ praṇamāsmai dvijātaye ॥ aśvibhyāṁ saha somaṁ ca pibāmo vigatajvarāḥ ॥13-141-26॥
[ते (te) - they; संमन्त्र्य (saṁmantrya) - having taken counsel together; ततो (tato) - then; from there; देवा (devā) - the gods; मदस्य (madasya) - of the intoxicating (drink); अस्यगताः (asyagatāḥ) - having approached this (soma); तदा (tadā) - then; अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - said; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - united; शक्रं (śakraṁ) - Śakra (Indra); प्रणम (praṇama) - let us bow to; अस्मै (asmai) - to him; द्विजातये (dvijātaye) - to the twice-born (Brahmana); अश्विभ्यां (aśvibhyāṁ) - with the Aśvins; सह (saha) - together with; सोमं (somaṁ) - the Soma; च (ca) - and; पिबामः (pibāmaḥ) - let us drink; विगतज्वराः (vigatajvarāḥ) - free from affliction;]
(They, having taken counsel together, then the gods, having approached this intoxicating (drink), then said united: "Śakra, let us bow to him, to the twice-born. Together with the Aśvins, Soma also let us drink, free from affliction." (13-141-26))
Then the gods, after conferring together, came to this intoxicating drink. United, they said: "Śakra, let us bow to him, the twice-born. Along with the Aśvins, let us also drink Soma, now free from all affliction." (13-141-26)
ततः स प्रणतः शक्रश्चकार च्यवनस्य तत्। च्यवनः कृतवांस्तौ चाप्यश्विनौ सोमपीथिनौ ॥१३-१४१-२७॥
tataḥ sa praṇataḥ śakraścakāra cyavanasya tat। cyavanaḥ kṛtavāṃstau cāpyaśvinau somapīthinau ॥13-141-27॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; प्रणतः (praṇataḥ) - bowed; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Indra; चकार (cakāra) - did; च्यवनस्य (cyavanasya) - of Cyavana; तत् (tat) - that; च्यवनः (cyavanaḥ) - Cyavana; कृतवान् (kṛtavān) - made; तौ (tau) - those two; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अश्विनौ (aśvinau) - the Aśvins (twin gods); सोमपीथिनौ (somapīthinau) - drinkers of Soma;]
(Then he, having bowed, Indra did that (thing) of Cyavana. Cyavana made those two also, the Aśvins, drinkers of Soma.)
Then Indra, having bowed, fulfilled that request of Cyavana. Cyavana also made the two Aśvins participants in the Soma-drinking. (13-141-27)
ततः प्रत्याहरत्कर्म मदं च व्यभजन्मुनिः। अक्षेषु मृगयायां च पाने स्त्रीषु च वीर्यवान् ॥१३-१४१-२८॥
tataḥ pratyāharat karma madaṃ ca vyabhajan muniḥ। akṣeṣu mṛgayāyāṃ ca pāne strīṣu ca vīryavān॥13-141-28॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रत्याहरत् (pratyāharat) - withdrew; कर्म (karma) - action; मदं (madaṃ) - pride; च (ca) - and; व्यभजत् (vyabhajat) - divided; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; अक्षेषु (akṣeṣu) - in gambling (at dice); मृगयायाम् (mṛgayāyām) - in hunting; च (ca) - and; पाने (pāne) - in drinking; स्त्रीषु (strīṣu) - in women; च (ca) - and; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - powerful;]
(Then the sage withdrew action and pride, and the powerful one divided (these) among gambling, hunting, drinking, and women.)
Then the sage renounced action and pride, and the powerful one distributed these among gambling at dice, hunting, drinking, and women. (13-141-28)
एतैर्दोषैर्नरो राजन्क्षयं याति न संशयः। तस्मादेतान्नरो नित्यं दूरतः परिवर्जयेत् ॥१३-१४१-२९॥
etairdōṣairnarō rājan kṣayaṃ yāti na saṃśayaḥ। tasmād etān narō nityaṃ dūrataḥ parivarjayet ॥13-141-29॥
[एतैः (etaiḥ) - by these; दोषैः (doṣaiḥ) - by faults; नरः (naraḥ) - a person; राजन् (rājan) - O king; क्षयम् (kṣayam) - ruin; याति (yāti) - goes; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; एतान् (etān) - these; नरः (naraḥ) - a person; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; दूरतः (dūrataḥ) - from afar; परिवर्जयेत् (parivarjayet) - should avoid;]
(By these faults, a person, O king, goes to ruin, no doubt. Therefore, these a person should always avoid from afar.)
O king, by these faults, a person surely comes to ruin; therefore, a person should always keep away from them. (13-141-29)
एतत्ते च्यवनस्यापि कर्म राजन्प्रकीर्तितम्। ब्रवीम्यहं ब्रूहि वा त्वं च्यवनात्क्षत्रियं वरम् ॥१३-१४१-३०॥
etat te cyavanasya api karma rājan prakīrtitam। bravīmi aham brūhi vā tvaṃ cyavanāt kṣatriyam varam॥13-141-30॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; ते (te) - to you; च्यवनस्य (cyavanasya) - of Cyavana; अपि (api) - also; कर्म (karma) - deed; राजन् (rājan) - O king; प्रकीर्तितम् (prakīrtitam) - has been proclaimed; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I speak; अहम् (aham) - I; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - speak; वा (vā) - or; त्वम् (tvaṃ) - you; च्यवनात् (cyavanāt) - from Cyavana; क्षत्रियम् (kṣatriyam) - a Kṣatriya; वरम् (varam) - boon;]
(This to you, of Cyavana also, deed, O king, has been proclaimed. I speak; speak or you, from Cyavana a Kṣatriya boon.)
O king, this deed of Cyavana has also been proclaimed to you. I can tell (about it), or you may tell of the Kṣatriya boon received from Cyavana. (13-141-30)
