तूष्णीमासीदर्जुनस्तु पवनस्त्वब्रवीत्पुनः। शृणु मे ब्राह्मणेष्वेव मुख्यं कर्म जनाधिप ॥१३-१४२-१॥
tūṣṇīm āsīd arjunaḥ tu pavanaḥ tu abravīt punaḥ। śṛṇu me brāhmaṇeṣu eva mukhyaṃ karma janādhipa॥13-142-1॥
[तूष्णीम् (tūṣṇīm) - silently; आसीत् (āsīt) - remained; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; तु (tu) - but; पवनः (pavanaḥ) - the Wind (Vāyu); त्व् (tv) - but; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; मे (me) - from me; ब्राह्मणेषु (brāhmaṇeṣu) - among Brāhmaṇas; एव (eva) - indeed; मुख्यम् (mukhyaṃ) - principal; कर्म (karma) - action; जनाधिप (janādhipa) - O ruler of men;]
(Silently remained Arjuna but the Wind but said again. Hear from me indeed among Brāhmaṇas the principal action, O ruler of men.)
Arjuna remained silent, but the Wind (Vāyu) then spoke again: "Hear from me, O ruler of men, about the principal duty among Brāhmaṇas." (13-142-1)
मदस्यास्यमनुप्राप्ता यदा सेन्द्रा दिवौकसः। तदेयं च्यवनेनेह हृता तेषां वसुन्धरा ॥१३-१४२-२॥
madasyāsyam anuprāptā yadā sendrā divaukasaḥ। tadeyaṃ cyavaneneha hṛtā teṣāṃ vasundharā ॥13-142-2॥
[मदस्य (madasya) - of the Soma (nectar) wine; (or of intoxication;) अस्य (asya) - of this; अनुप्राप्ता (anuprāptā) - reached; attained; यदा (yadā) - when; सेन्द्रा (sendrā) - with Indra; दिवौकसः (divaukasaḥ) - the dwellers of heaven (the gods); तदा (tadā) - then; इयं (iyaṃ) - this; च्यवनेन (cyavanena) - by Cyavana; इह (iha) - here; हृता (hṛtā) - carried off; taken away; तेषां (teṣām) - of them; their; वसुन्धरा (vasundharā) - earth;]
(Of the Soma wine, of this, when attained with Indra, the dwellers of heaven, then this earth here was taken away by Cyavana from them.)
When the dwellers of heaven along with Indra had attained this Soma wine, then this earth was taken away from them here by Cyavana. (13-142-2)
उभौ लोकौ हृतौ मत्वा ते देवा दुःखिताभवन्। शोकार्ताश्च महात्मानं ब्रह्माणं शरणं ययुः ॥१३-१४२-३॥

(Both worlds taken away having considered, those gods became distressed. Afflicted by grief and to the great-souled Brahmā for refuge went.)
When they realized both worlds had been seized, those gods became distressed. Afflicted by grief, they went to the great-souled Brahmā for refuge. (13-142-3)

madāsya-vyatiṣiktānām asmākaṁ loka-pūjita। cyavanena hṛtā bhūmiḥ kapaiś cāpi divaṁ prabho ॥13-142-4॥
[मदास्यव्यतिषिक्तानाम् (madāsya-vyatiṣiktānām) - of those who have been drenched by the liquor (of pride); अस्माकं (asmākaṁ) - our; लोकपूजित (loka-pūjita) - respected in the world; च्यवनेन (cyavanena) - by Cyavana; हृता (hṛtā) - taken away; भूमिः (bhūmiḥ) - earth; कपैश् (kapaiḥ) - by the monkeys; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; दिवं (divaṁ) - heaven; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord;]
(Of those who have been drenched by the liquor of pride, our (ones) respected in the world, O lord, the earth has been taken away by Cyavana, and also the heaven by the monkeys.)
O lord, Cyavana took away the earth from us, who were drenched with the liquor of pride—known and respected in the world—and even the monkeys have taken away heaven from us.
ब्रह्मोवाच॥

गच्छध्वं शरणं विप्रानाशु सेन्द्रा दिवौकसः। प्रसाद्य तानुभौ लोकाववाप्स्यथ यथा पुरा ॥१३-१४२-५॥
gacchadhvaṃ śaraṇaṃ viprān āśu sendrā divaukasah। prasādya tān ubhau lokau avāpsyatha yathā purā ॥13-142-5॥
[गच्छध्वं (gacchadhvaṃ) - go (you all); शरणं (śaraṇam) - refuge; विप्रान् (viprān) - the Brāhmaṇas; आशु (āśu) - quickly; सेन्द्राः (sendrāḥ) - with Indra; दिवौकसः (divaukasah) - the dwellers of heaven; प्रसाद्य (prasādya) - having propitiated; तान् (tān) - them; उभौ (ubhau) - both; लोकौ (lokau) - worlds; अवाप्स्यथ (avāpsyatha) - you will attain; यथा (yathā) - as; पुरा (purā) - before;]
(Go you all for refuge to the Brāhmaṇas quickly, with Indra, the dwellers of heaven. Having propitiated them, both worlds you will attain as before.)
Go quickly with Indra, O dwellers of heaven, to take refuge with the Brāhmaṇas. Having propitiated them, you will regain both worlds as before. (13-142-5)
ते ययुः शरणं विप्रांस्त ऊचुः काञ्जयामहे। इत्युक्तास्ते द्विजान्प्राहुर्जयतेह कपानिति ॥ भूगतान्हि विजेतारो वयमित्येव पार्थिव ॥१३-१४२-६॥
te yayuḥ śaraṇaṃ viprāṃs ta ūcuḥ kāñ jayāmahe. ity uktās te dvijān prāhur jayateha kapān iti ॥ bhūgatān hi vijetāro vayam ity eva pārthiva ॥13-142-6॥
[ते (te) - they; ययुः (yayuḥ) - went; शरणं (śaraṇam) - refuge; विप्रान् (viprān) - brāhmaṇas; ते (te) - they; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said; काञ् (kān) - whom; जयामहे (jayāmahe) - may we conquer; इति (iti) - thus; उक्ताः (uktāḥ) - addressed; ते (te) - they; द्विजान् (dvijān) - twice-borns; प्राहुः (prāhuḥ) - said; जयते (jayate) - 'is conquered;' इह (iha) - here; कपान् (kapān) - monkeys; इति (iti) - thus; भूमिगतान् (bhūgatān) - those who have reached the ground; हि (hi) - surely; विजेतारः (vijetāraḥ) - conquerors; वयम् (vayam) - we; इति (iti) - thus; एव (eva) - indeed; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king;]
(They went for refuge to the brāhmaṇas; they said, 'Whom may we conquer?' Thus addressed, those twice-born said, 'Here the monkeys are conquered.' Indeed, O king, we are surely the conquerors of those who have reached the earth.' (13-142-6))

ततः कर्म समारब्धं ब्राह्मणैः कपनाशनम्। तच्छ्रुत्वा प्रेषितो दूतो ब्राह्मणेभ्यो धनी कपैः ॥१३-१४२-७॥
tataḥ karma samārabdhaṃ brāhmaṇaiḥ kapanāśanam। tacchrutvā preṣito dūto brāhmaṇebhyo dhanī kapaiḥ ॥13-142-7॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; कर्म (karma) - action; समारब्धं (samārabdhaṃ) - begun; ब्राह्मणैः (brāhmaṇaiḥ) - by the brāhmaṇas; कपनाशनम् (kapanāśanam) - destruction of the poor; तत् (tat) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; प्रेषितः (preṣitaḥ) - sent; दूतः (dūtaḥ) - messenger; ब्राह्मणेभ्यः (brāhmaṇebhyaḥ) - to the brāhmaṇas; धनी (dhanī) - the wealthy one; कपैः (kapaiḥ) - by the poor;]
(Then (the) action begun by the brāhmaṇas (was) destruction of the poor. Having heard that, a messenger was sent to the brāhmaṇas by the wealthy one with the poor.)
Then the action initiated by the brāhmaṇas was the destruction of the poor. Hearing this, the wealthy man sent a messenger along with the poor to the brāhmaṇas. (13-142-7)
स च तान्ब्राह्मणानाह धनी कपवचो यथा। भवद्भिः सदृशाः सर्वे कपाः किमिह वर्तते ॥१३-१४२-८॥
sa ca tān brāhmaṇān āha dhanī kapavaco yathā। bhavadbhiḥ sadṛśāḥ sarve kapāḥ kim iha vartate ॥13-142-8॥
[स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; तान् (tān) - those; ब्राह्मणान् (brāhmaṇān) - brāhmaṇas; आह (āha) - said; धनी (dhanī) - the wealthy one; कपवचः (kapavacaḥ) - monkey-like speech; यथा (yathā) - as; भवद्भिः (bhavadbhiḥ) - by you; सदृशाः (sadṛśāḥ) - like; सर्वे (sarve) - all; कपाः (kapāḥ) - monkeys; किम् (kim) - what; इह (iha) - here; वर्तते (vartate) - is;]
(He and to those brāhmaṇas said, the wealthy one, as he spoke in a monkey-like manner: By you, like, all monkeys, what here is?)
And the wealthy one said to those brāhmaṇas, speaking like a monkey: 'All these monkeys are just like you; what is this here?' (13-142-8)
सर्वे वेदविदः प्राज्ञाः सर्वे च क्रतुयाजिनः। सर्वे सत्यव्रताश्चैव सर्वे तुल्या महर्षिभिः ॥१३-१४२-९॥
sarve vedavidaḥ prājñāḥ sarve ca kratuyājinaḥ। sarve satyavratāścaiva sarve tulyā maharṣibhiḥ॥13-142-9॥
[सर्वे (sarve) - all; वेदविदः (vedavidaḥ) - knowers of the Veda; प्राज्ञाः (prājñāḥ) - wise; सर्वे (sarve) - all; च (ca) - and; क्रतुयाजिनः (kratuyājinaḥ) - performers of sacrifices; सर्वे (sarve) - all; सत्यव्रताः (satyavratāḥ) - those of true vows; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सर्वे (sarve) - all; तुल्या (tulyā) - equal; महर्षिभिः (maharṣibhiḥ) - with the great sages;]
(All knowers of the Veda, wise, all and performers of sacrifices; all those of true vows and indeed all equal with the great sages.)

श्रीश्चैव रमते तेषु धारयन्ति श्रियं च ते। वृथा दारान्न गच्छन्ति वृथामांसं न भुञ्जते ॥१३-१४२-१०॥
śrīś caiva ramate teṣu dhārayanti śriyaṃ ca te. vṛthā dārān na gacchanti vṛthā māṃsaṃ na bhuñjate ॥13-142-10॥
[श्रीः (śrīḥ) - prosperity; wealth; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; surely; रमते (ramate) - remains; abides; तेषु (teṣu) - in them; धारयन्ति (dhārayanti) - they bear; support; श्रियम् (śriyam) - prosperity; wealth; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - they; वृथा (vṛthā) - in vain; uselessly; दारान् (dārān) - wives; spouses; न (na) - not; गच्छन्ति (gacchanti) - they go to; approach; वृथा (vṛthā) - in vain; uselessly; मांसम् (māṃsam) - meat; न (na) - not; भुञ्जते (bhuñjate) - they eat; partake;]
(Prosperity indeed abides in them, they bear prosperity also. In vain they do not go to wives, in vain they do not eat meat.)

दीप्तमग्निं जुह्वति च गुरूणां वचने स्थिताः। सर्वे च नियतात्मानो बालानां संविभागिनः ॥१३-१४२-११॥
dīptam agniṃ juhvati ca gurūṇāṃ vacane sthitāḥ। sarve ca niyatātmānaḥ bālānāṃ saṃvibhāginaḥ॥13-142-11॥
[दीप्तमग्निं (dīptam agnim) - blazing fire; जुह्वति (juhvati) - offer; च (ca) - and; गुरूणां (gurūṇām) - of the elders; वचने (vacane) - in the command; स्थिताः (sthitāḥ) - standing; सर्वे (sarve) - all; च (ca) - and; नियतात्मानो (niyatātmānaḥ) - self-controlled ones; बालानां (bālānām) - of children; संविभागिनः (saṃvibhāginaḥ) - sharers with;]
(Blazing fire they offer and in the command of the elders standing; all and self-controlled ones, of children sharers with.)
They offer oblations to the blazing fire and stand by the command of the elders; all of them are self-controlled and share equally with the children. (13-142-11)
उपेत्य शकटैर्यान्ति न सेवन्ति रजस्वलाम्। अभुक्तवत्सु नाश्नन्ति दिवा चैव न शेरते ॥१३-१४२-१२॥
upetya śakaṭair yānti na sevanti rajasvalām | abhuktavatsu na aśnanti divā caiva na śerate ॥13-142-12॥
[उपेत्य (upetya) - having approached; शकटैः (śakaṭaiḥ) - with carts; यान्ति (yānti) - they go; न (na) - not; सेवन्ति (sevanti) - they serve; रजस्वलाम् (rajasvalām) - a menstruating woman; अभुक्तवत्सु (abhuktavatsu) - when food has not been eaten; न (na) - not; अश्नन्ति (aśnanti) - they eat; दिवा (divā) - by day; चैव (ca eva) - and also; न (na) - not; शेरते (śerate) - they lie down;]
(Having approached, with carts they go; they do not serve a menstruating woman. When food has not been eaten, they do not eat; by day and also, they do not lie down.)

एतैश्चान्यैश्च बहुभिर्गुणैर्युक्तान्कथं कपान्। विजेष्यथ निवर्तध्वं निवृत्तानां शुभं हि वः ॥१३-१४२-१३॥
etaiś cānyaiś ca bahubhir guṇair yuktān kathaṃ kapān। vijeṣyatha nivartadhvaṃ nivṛttānāṃ śubhaṃ hi vaḥ॥13-142-13॥
[एतैः (etaiḥ) - by these; च (ca) - and; अन्यैः (anyaiḥ) - by others; च (ca) - and; बहुभिः (bahubhiḥ) - by many; गुणैः (guṇaiḥ) - qualities; युक्तान् (yuktān) - endowed (with); कथं (kathaṃ) - how; कपान् (kapān) - monkeys; विजेष्यथ (vijeṣyatha) - (you) will conquer; निवर्तध्वं (nivartadhvaṃ) - turn back; निवृत्तानाम् (nivṛttānām) - for those who have turned back; शुभम् (śubham) - auspicious; हि (hi) - indeed; वः (vaḥ) - for you;]
(By these and by others, endowed with many qualities, how (can you) conquer the monkeys? Turn back; for those who have turned back, there is indeed auspiciousness for you.)
How can you conquer the monkeys endowed with these and many other qualities? Turn back; for those who have turned away, there will certainly be well-being for you. (13-142-13)
ब्राह्मणा ऊचुः॥

The Brāhmaṇas said.
कपान्वयं विजेष्यामो ये देवास्ते वयं स्मृताः। तस्माद्वध्याः कपास्माकं धनिन्याहि यथागतम् ॥१३-१४२-१४॥
kapānvayaṁ vijeṣyāmo ye devās te vayaṁ smṛtāḥ. tasmād vadhyāḥ kapāsmākaṁ dhanin yāhi yathāgatam ॥13-142-14॥
[कपान्वयम् (kapānvayam) - the lineage of monkeys; विजेष्यामः (vijeṣyāmaḥ) - we will conquer; ये (ye) - who; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; ते (te) - they; वयम् (vayam) - we; स्मृताः (smṛtāḥ) - are considered; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; वध्याः (vadhyāḥ) - worthy of being killed; कपः (kapaḥ) - the monkey; अस्माकम् (asmākam) - our; धनिन् (dhanin) - O wealthy one; याहि (yāhi) - go; यथा (yathā) - as; आगतम् (āgatam) - (you) have come;]
(The lineage of monkeys we will conquer. Who (are) the gods—that we are considered. Therefore (the) monkeys are worthy of being killed by us. O wealthy one, go back as you have come. (13-142-14))
We shall conquer the lineage of monkeys. We are counted as those gods. Therefore, these monkeys are worthy of being slain by us. O wealthy one, go back as you have come. (13-142-14)
धनी गत्वा कपानाह न वो विप्राः प्रियङ्कराः। गृहीत्वास्त्राण्यथो विप्रान्कपाः सर्वे समाद्रवन् ॥१३-१४२-१५॥
dhanī gatvā kapānāha na vo viprāḥ priyaṅkarāḥ। gṛhītvāstrāṇyatho viprānkapāḥ sarve samādravan ॥13-142-15॥
[धनी (dhanī) - the wealthy (one); गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; कपान् (kapān) - to (the) monkeys; आह (āha) - said; न (na) - not; वः (vaḥ) - your; विप्राः (viprāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; प्रियङ्कराः (priyaṅkarāḥ) - well-wishers; गृहीत्वा (gṛhītvā) - having taken; अस्त्राणि (astrāṇi) - weapons; अथ (atho) - then; विप्रान् (viprān) - Brāhmaṇas; कपाः (kapāḥ) - monkeys; सर्वे (sarve) - all; समाद्रवन् (samādravan) - rushed away together;]
(The wealthy (one), having gone, said to the monkeys: 'Not your Brāhmaṇas (are) well-wishers.' Having taken weapons, then all the monkeys rushed away (with) the Brāhmaṇas.)
The wealthy one, after going to the monkeys, said: 'The Brāhmaṇas are not your well-wishers.' Then, having seized their weapons, all the monkeys together rushed after the Brāhmaṇas. (13-142-15)
समुदग्रध्वजान्दृष्ट्वा कपान्सर्वे द्विजातयः। व्यसृजञ्ज्वलितानग्नीन्कपानां प्राणनाशनान् ॥१३-१४२-१६॥
samudagradhvajān dṛṣṭvā kapān sarve dvijātayaḥ। vyasṛjañ jvalitān agnīn kapānāṃ prāṇanāśanān ॥13-142-16॥
[समुदग्रध्वजान् (samudagradhvajān) - with upright banners; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; कपान् (kapān) - monkeys; सर्वे (sarve) - all; द्विजातयः (dvijātayaḥ) - twice-born ones; वयसृजन् (vyasṛjan) - sent forth; ज्वलितान् (jvalitān) - blazing; अग्नीन् (agnīn) - fires; कपानाम् (kapānām) - of the monkeys; प्राणनाशनान् (prāṇanāśanān) - life-destroying;]
(Seeing the monkeys with upright banners, all the twice-born ones sent forth blazing fires, destroying the life of the monkeys.)

brahmasṛṣṭā havyabhujaḥ kapānbhuktvā sanātanāḥ। nabhasīva yathābhrāṇi vyarājanta narādhipa ॥ praśaśaṃsurdvijāṃścaiva brahmāṇaṃ ca yaśasvinam ॥13-142-17॥
[ब्रह्मसृष्टा (brahmasṛṣṭā) - created by Brahmā; हव्यभुजः (havyabhujaḥ) - the eaters of oblations; कपान् (kapān) - remnants (of sacrifice); भुक्त्वा (bhuktvā) - having eaten; सनातनाः (sanātanāḥ) - eternal; नभसि (nabhasi) - in the sky; इव (iva) - like; यथा (yathā) - just as; अभ्राणि (abhrāṇi) - clouds; व्यराजन्त (vyarājanta) - shone forth; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O lord of men; प्रशशंसुः (praśaśaṃsuḥ) - praised; द्विजान् (dvijān) - the twice-born; चैव (caiva) - and also; ब्रह्माणम् (brahmāṇam) - Brahmā; च (ca) - and; यशस्विनम् (yaśasvinam) - the illustrious;]
(Created by Brahmā, the eaters of oblations, having eaten the remnants, eternal, in the sky just as clouds shone forth, O lord of men. Praised the twice-born and also Brahmā, the illustrious.)

तेषां तेजस्तथा वीर्यं देवानां ववृधे ततः। अवाप्नुवंश्चामरत्वं त्रिषु लोकेषु पूजितम् ॥१३-१४२-१८॥
teṣāṃ tejas tathā vīryaṃ devānāṃ vavṛdhe tataḥ। avāpnuvan cāmaratvaṃ triṣu lokeṣu pūjitam॥13-142-18॥
[तेषां (teṣāṃ) - of them; तेजः (tejas) - energy; तथा (tathā) - also; वीर्यम् (vīryam) - strength; देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; ववृधे (vavṛdhe) - grew; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अवाप्नुवन् (avāpnuvan) - gained; च (ca) - and; अमरत्वम् (amaratvam) - immortality; त्रिषु (triṣu) - in the three; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - worlds; पूजितम् (pūjitam) - honored;]
(Of them, energy also strength of the gods grew, then; gained and immortality, in the three worlds, honored.)

इत्युक्तवचनं वायुमर्जुनः प्रत्यभाषत। प्रतिपूज्य महाबाहो यत्तच्छृणु नराधिप ॥१३-१४२-१९॥
ity-ukta-vacanaṃ vāyu-marjunaḥ pratyabhāṣata। pratipūjya mahā-bāho yat tac chṛṇu narādhipa ॥13-142-19॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तवचनम् (ukta-vacanam) - spoken-word; वायुम् (vāyum) - Vāyu (the wind-god); अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; प्रत्यभाषत (pratyabhāṣata) - replied; प्रतिपूज्य (pratipūjya) - having duly honored; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; यत् (yat) - what; तत् (tat) - that; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king (lord of men);]
(Thus, having heard the spoken words, Vāyu and Arjuna replied. Having duly honored, O mighty-armed, what that is, hear, O king.)
Hearing these words, Vāyu and Arjuna replied. After duly honoring (you), O mighty-armed one, listen, O king, to what (we) say. (13-142-19)
जीवाम्यहं ब्राह्मणार्थे सर्वथा सततं प्रभो। ब्रह्मणे ब्राह्मणेभ्यश्च प्रणमामि च नित्यशः ॥१३-१४२-२०॥
jīvāmyahaṁ brāhmaṇārthe sarvathā satataṁ prabho। brahmaṇe brāhmaṇebhyaśca praṇamāmi ca nityaśaḥ ॥13-142-20॥
[जीवामि (jīvāmi) - I live; अहं (ahaṁ) - I; ब्राह्मणार्थे (brāhmaṇārthe) - for the sake of the brāhmaṇa; सर्वथा (sarvathā) - always; सततं (satataṁ) - constantly; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord; ब्रह्मणे (brahmaṇe) - unto Brahman; ब्राह्मणेभ्यः (brāhmaṇebhyaḥ) - unto the brāhmaṇas; च (ca) - and; प्रणमामि (praṇamāmi) - I bow; च (ca) - and; नित्यशः (nityaśaḥ) - constantly;]
(I live I for the sake of the brāhmaṇa always constantly, O lord. Unto Brahman, unto the brāhmaṇas and, I bow and constantly.)
O lord, I always and constantly live for the sake of the brāhmaṇa. I constantly bow to Brahman and to the brāhmaṇas. (13-142-20)
दत्तात्रेयप्रसादाच्च मया प्राप्तमिदं यशः। लोके च परमा कीर्तिर्धर्मश्च चरितो महान् ॥१३-१४२-२१॥
dattātreya-prasādāc ca mayā prāptam idaṃ yaśaḥ। loke ca paramā kīrtir dharmaś ca carito mahān ॥13-142-21॥
[दत्तात्रेयप्रसादात् (dattātreya-prasādāt) - from Dattātreya's grace; च (ca) - and; मया (mayā) - by me; प्राप्तम् (prāptam) - was obtained; इदं (idaṃ) - this; यशः (yaśaḥ) - fame; लोके (loke) - in the world; च (ca) - and; परमा (paramā) - supreme; कीर्तिः (kīrtiḥ) - renown; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; च (ca) - and; चरितः (caritaḥ) - was practiced; महान् (mahān) - great;]
(From Dattātreya's grace and by me this fame was obtained; in the world also supreme renown and dharma and great (were) practiced.)
By Dattātreya's grace, I have obtained this fame; in the world, supreme renown and great dharma have also been practiced. (13-142-21)
अहो ब्राह्मणकर्माणि यथा मारुत तत्त्वतः। त्वया प्रोक्तानि कार्त्स्न्येन श्रुतानि प्रयतेन ह ॥१३-१४२-२२॥
aho brāhmaṇakarmāṇi yathā māruta tattvataḥ। tvayā proktāni kārtsnyena śrutāni prayatena ha॥13-142-22॥
[अहो (aho) - indeed; ब्राह्मणकर्माणि (brāhmaṇakarmāṇi) - the actions of a brāhmaṇa; यथा (yathā) - as; मारुत (māruta) - O son of the wind; तत्त्वतः (tattvataḥ) - in truth; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; प्रोक्तानि (proktāni) - have been spoken; कार्त्स्न्येन (kārtsnyena) - in entirety; श्रुतानि (śrutāni) - have been heard; प्रयतेन (prayatena) - with effort; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Indeed, O son of the wind, as the actions of a brāhmaṇa have been spoken by you in truth, in entirety, they have been heard with effort, indeed.)
Indeed, O son of the wind, the actions of a brāhmaṇa, just as you have truly and completely spoken them, have been attentively heard. (13-142-22)

ब्राह्मणान्क्षत्रधर्मेण पालयस्वेन्द्रियाणि च। भृगुभ्यस्ते भयं घोरं तत्तु कालाद्भविष्यति ॥१३-१४२-२३॥
brāhmaṇān kṣatradharmeṇa pālayasva indriyāṇi ca। bhṛgubhyaḥ te bhayaṃ ghoraṃ tat tu kālāt bhaviṣyati॥13-142-23॥

(Brāhmaṇas by the duty of a kṣatriya protect, the senses also. From the Bhṛgus to you fear terrible, that but from time will be.)
Protect the Brāhmaṇas according to the duty of a kṣatriya, and also control your senses. The terrible fear from the Bhṛgus for you, however, will arise in due time. (13-142-23)
