brūhi brāhmaṇapūjāyāṃ vyuṣṭiṃ tvaṃ madhusūdana। vettā tvam asya cārthasya veda tvāṃ hi pitāmahaḥ॥13-144-1॥

O Madhusūdana, tell (me) about the completion in the worship of a brāhmaṇa. You are the knower of this and its meaning, as even the grandfather Brahmā knows you. (13-144-1)

प्रद्युम्नः परिपप्रच्छ ब्राह्मणैः परिकोपितः। किं फलं ब्राह्मणेष्वस्ति पूजायां मधुसूदन ॥ ईश्वरस्य सतस्तस्य इह चैव परत्र च ॥१३-१४४-३॥
pradyumnaḥ paripapraccha brāhmaṇaiḥ parikopitaḥ। kiṃ phalaṃ brāhmaṇeṣv asti pūjāyāṃ madhusūdana ॥ īśvarasya satas tasya iha ca eva paratra ca ॥13-144-3॥

(Pradyumna, having been angered by the Brāhmaṇas, questioned thoroughly. What fruit is there for Brāhmaṇas in worship, O Madhusūdana? Of that controller who is true, here indeed and in the next (world).)
Pradyumna, provoked by the Brāhmaṇas, thoroughly questioned: "O Madhusūdana, what is the benefit for Brāhmaṇas in worship—both here in this world and in the next—of the Supreme Lord?" (13-144-3)
सदा द्विजातीन्सम्पूज्य किं फलं तत्र मानद। एतद्ब्रूहि पितः सर्वं सुमहान्संशयोऽत्र मे ॥१३-१४४-४॥
sadā dvijātīn sampūjya kiṃ phalaṃ tatra mānada। etad brūhi pitaḥ sarvaṃ sumahān saṃśayo'tra me ॥13-144-4॥
[सदा (sadā) - always; द्विजातीन् (dvijātīn) - the twice-born; सम्पूज्य (sampūjya) - having worshipped; किं (kiṃ) - what; फलं (phalaṃ) - fruit; तत्र (tatra) - there; मानद (mānada) - O honour-giver; एतत् (etat) - this; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; पितः (pitaḥ) - O father; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; सुमहान् (sumahān) - very great; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt; अत्र (atra) - here; मे (me) - to me;]
(Always the twice-born having worshipped, what fruit there, O honour-giver? This tell, O father, all; a very great doubt here to me.)
O honour-giver, after always worshipping the twice-born, what is the fruit there? O father, please tell me all this; I have a very great doubt here. (13-144-4)
इत्युक्तवचनस्तेन प्रद्युम्नेन तदा त्वहम्। प्रत्यब्रुवं महाराज यत्तच्छृणु समाहितः ॥१३-१४४-५॥
ity-ukta-vacanas tena pradyumnena tadā tv aham। pratyabruvaṁ mahārāja yat tac chṛṇu samāhitaḥ॥13-144-5॥

(Thus having spoken words by him, by Pradyumna, then, you, I replied, O great king, what that, hear attentively.)
When Pradyumna had thus spoken, O great king, I replied to you; now, hear attentively what I said. (13-144-5)
व्युष्टिं ब्राह्मणपूजायां रौक्मिणेय निबोध मे। एते हि सोमराजान ईश्वराः सुखदुःखयोः ॥१३-१४४-६॥
vyuṣṭiṃ brāhmaṇapūjāyāṃ raukmiṇeya nibodha me। ete hi somarājāna īśvarāḥ sukhaduḥkhayoḥ ॥13-144-6॥
[व्युष्टिं (vyuṣṭim) - section; (portion;) ब्राह्मणपूजायां (brāhmaṇapūjāyām) - in the worship of the Brāhmaṇa; (in Brāhmaṇa-honoring;) रौक्मिणेय (raukmiṇeya) - O son of Rukmiṇī; (Raukmiṇeya;) निबोध (nibodha) - know; (understand;) मे (me) - from me; (my;) एते (ete) - these; (they;) हि (hi) - indeed; (certainly;) सोमराजान (somarājān) - Soma-kings; (the kings of Soma;) ईश्वराः (īśvarāḥ) - lords; (masters;) सुखदुःखयोः (sukhaduḥkhayoḥ) - of happiness and sorrow; (in pleasure and pain;);]
(Section in the worship of the Brāhmaṇa, O son of Rukmiṇī, know from me. These indeed the Soma-kings, lords of happiness and sorrow. (13-144-6))
O Raukmiṇeya, learn from me the section concerning worship of the Brāhmaṇa. These Soma-kings are truly the lords of happiness and sorrow. (13-144-6)
अस्मिँल्लोके रौक्मिणेय तथामुष्मिंश्च पुत्रक। ब्राह्मणप्रमुखं सौख्यं न मेऽत्रास्ति विचारणा ॥१३-१४४-७॥
asmiṁlloke raukmiṇeya tathāmuṣmiṁśca putraka। brāhmaṇapramukhaṁ saukhyaṁ na me'trāsti vicāraṇā ॥13-144-7॥
[अस्मिँल्लोके (asmiṁlloke) - in this world; रौक्मिणेय (raukmiṇeya) - O son of Rukmiṇī; तथा (tathā) - likewise; अमुष्मिन् (amuṣmin) - in that (world/realm); च (ca) - and; पुत्रक (putraka) - O son; ब्राह्मणप्रमुखं (brāhmaṇapramukhaṁ) - having brāhmaṇas as chief; सौख्यं (saukhyam) - happiness; न (na) - not; मे (me) - to me; अत्र (atra) - here; अस्ति (asti) - exists; विचारणा (vicāraṇā) - consideration;]
(In this world, O son of Rukmiṇī, and likewise in that (world), O son, happiness with brāhmaṇas as chief does not exist to me here—(there is) no consideration.)
O son of Rukmiṇī, whether in this world or the next, I have no happiness where brāhmaṇas are paramount—this is certain. (13-144-7)
ब्राह्मणप्रमुखं वीर्यमायुः कीर्तिर्यशो बलम्। लोका लोकेश्वराश्चैव सर्वे ब्राह्मणपूर्वकाः ॥१३-१४४-८॥
brāhmaṇapramukhaṃ vīryam āyuḥ kīrtir yaśo balam। lokā lokeśvarāś caiva sarve brāhmaṇapūrvakāḥ ॥13-144-8॥
[ब्राह्मणप्रमुखं (brāhmaṇapramukham) - headed by the Brāhmaṇa; वीर्यम् (vīryam) - energy; आयुः (āyuḥ) - life; कीर्तिः (kīrtiḥ) - fame; यशः (yaśaḥ) - glory; बलम् (balam) - strength; लोका (lokāḥ) - worlds; लोकेश्वराः (lokeśvarāḥ) - lords of the worlds; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सर्वे (sarve) - all; ब्राह्मणपूर्वकाः (brāhmaṇapūrvakāḥ) - having Brāhmaṇa at the forefront;]
(Brāhmaṇa-headed energy, life, fame, glory, strength; worlds and also lords of the worlds indeed all having Brāhmaṇa at the forefront.)
Energy, life, fame, glory, strength, the worlds, and the lords of the worlds—all these, headed by the Brāhmaṇa, exist with the Brāhmaṇa at the forefront. (13-144-8)
तत्कथं नाद्रियेयं वै ईश्वरोऽस्मीति पुत्रक। मा ते मन्युर्महाबाहो भवत्वत्र द्विजान्प्रति ॥१३-१४४-९॥
tat-kathaṁ nādriyeyaṁ vai īśvaro'smīti putraka। mā te manyur mahābāho bhavatv atra dvijān prati ॥13-144-9॥
[तत् (tat) - therefore; कथं (kathaṁ) - how; न (na) - not; आद्रियेयम् (ādriyeyam) - should I respect; वै (vai) - indeed; ईश्वरः (īśvaraḥ) - lord; अस्मि (asmi) - (I) am; इति (iti) - thus; पुत्रक (putraka) - O child; मा (mā) - do not; ते (te) - your; मन्युः (manyuḥ) - anger; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; भवतु (bhavatu) - let there be; अत्र (atra) - here; द्विजान् (dvijān) - the twice-born; प्रति (prati) - towards;]
(Therefore how should I not respect (them) indeed, (thinking) 'I am the Lord', O child? Do not let there be your anger, O mighty-armed, here towards the twice-born.)
Therefore, O child, how could I not honor them, (even if I think) 'I am the Lord'? O mighty-armed one, do not harbor anger here towards the twice-born. (13-144-9)
ब्राह्मणो हि महद्भूतमस्मिँल्लोके परत्र च। भस्म कुर्युर्जगदिदं क्रुद्धाः प्रत्यक्षदर्शिनः ॥१३-१४४-१०॥
brāhmaṇo hi mahadbhūtamasmiñlloke paratra ca. bhasma kuryur jagad idaṃ kruddhāḥ pratyakṣadarśinaḥ ॥13-144-10॥
[ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - the Brāhmaṇa; हि (hi) - indeed; महत्-भूतम् (mahad-bhūtam) - a great being; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; लोके (loke) - world; परत्र (paratra) - in the next (world); च (ca) - and; भस्म (bhasma) - ashes; कुर्युः (kuryuḥ) - may make; जगत् (jagat) - world; इदं (idaṃ) - this; क्रुद्धाः (kruddhāḥ) - when enraged; प्रत्यक्षदर्शिनः (pratyakṣadarśinaḥ) - who see directly (the truth);]
(The Brāhmaṇa indeed is a great being in this world and the next; when enraged, those who see directly (the truth) may make this world into ashes.)
The Brāhmaṇa, verily, is a great being in this world and the next; when angered, those who see things directly could turn this entire world into ashes. (13-144-10)
अन्यानपि सृजेयुश्च लोकाँल्लोकेश्वरांस्तथा। कथं तेषु न वर्तेय सम्यग्ज्ञानात्सुतेजसः ॥१३-१४४-११॥
anyān api sṛjeyuś ca lokāṁl lokeśvarāṁs tathā। kathaṁ teṣu na varteya samyag-jñānāt sutejasaḥ ॥13-144-11॥
[अन्यान् (anyān) - others; (accusative plural, other; अपि (api) - also; सृजेयुः (sṛjeyuḥ) - would create; (optative 3rd plural, from √sṛj, to create; च (ca) - and; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; (accusative plural; लोकेश्वरान् (lokeśvarān) - lords of worlds; (accusative plural; तथा (tathā) - in the same way; कथम् (katham) - how; तेषु (teṣu) - among them; (locative plural; न (na) - not; वर्तेय (varteya) - would exist; (optative 1st singular, from √vṛt, to exist; सम्यक्-ज्ञानात् (samyag-jñānāt) - from right knowledge; सुतेजसः (sutejasaḥ) - of one possessing great splendor;]
(Others also might create worlds and lords of worlds in the same way; how, among them, would I not exist, from right knowledge, as one possessing great splendor?)
Others too may create worlds and lords of worlds likewise; how could I not exist among them, possessing perfect knowledge and great splendour? (13-144-11)
अवसन्मद्गृहे तात ब्राह्मणो हरिपिङ्गलः। चीरवासा बिल्वदण्डी दीर्घश्मश्रुनखादिमान् ॥ दीर्घेभ्यश्च मनुष्येभ्यः प्रमाणादधिको भुवि ॥१३-१४४-१२॥
avasan mad-gṛhe tāta brāhmaṇo haripiṅgalaḥ। cīravasā bilvadaṇḍī dīrghaśmaśrunakhādimān॥ dīrghebhyaś ca manuṣyebhyaḥ pramāṇād adhiko bhuvi॥13-144-12॥
[अवसन् (avasan) - residing; मद्गृहे (mad-gṛhe) - in my house; तात (tāta) - dear one; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - brāhmaṇa; हरिपिङ्गलः (haripiṅgalaḥ) - tawny-brown; चीरवासा (cīravasā) - wearing bark garments; बिल्वदण्डी (bilvadaṇḍī) - holding a bilva staff; दीर्घश्मश्रुनखादिमान् (dīrghaśmaśru-nakhādimān) - possessing long beard and nails; दीर्घेभ्यः (dīrghebhyaḥ) - than tall (men); च (ca) - and; मनुष्येभ्यः (manuṣyebhyaḥ) - than men; प्रमाणात् (pramāṇāt) - in stature; अधिकः (adhikaḥ) - exceeding; भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth;]
(Residing in my house, dear one, a brāhmaṇa, tawny-brown, wearing bark garments, holding a bilva staff, possessing long beard and nails; than tall men and men, in stature exceeding on earth.)
Dear one, a tawny-brown brāhmaṇa, living in my house, wearing bark garments, carrying a bilva staff, and with a long beard and nails, who on earth exceeded tall men and all men in stature. (13-144-12)
स स्म सञ्चरते लोकान्ये दिव्या ये च मानुषाः। इमा गाथा गायमानश्चत्वरेषु सभासु च ॥१३-१४४-१३॥
sa sma sañcarate lokān ye divyā ye ca mānuṣāḥ। imā gāthā gāyamānaś catvareṣu sabhāsu ca ॥13-144-13॥
[स (sa) - he; स्म (sma) - indeed; सञ्चरते (sañcarate) - moves about; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds (people); ये (ye) - who; दिव्या (divyā) - divine; ये (ye) - who; च (ca) - and; मानुषाः (mānuṣāḥ) - human beings; इमा (imā) - these; गाथा (gāthā) - verses; गायमानः (gāyamānaḥ) - singing; चत्वरेषु (catvareṣu) - in crossroads; सभासु (sabhāsu) - in assemblies; च (ca) - and;]
(He indeed moves about the worlds, those that are divine and those that are human, singing these verses in crossroads and in assemblies and.)

दुर्वाससं वासयेत्को ब्राह्मणं सत्कृतं गृहे। परिभाषां च मे श्रुत्वा को नु दद्यात्प्रतिश्रयम् ॥ यो मां कश्चिद्वासयेत न स मां कोपयेदिह ॥१३-१४४-१४॥
durvāsasaṃ vāsayet ko brāhmaṇaṃ satkṛtaṃ gṛhe। paribhāṣāṃ ca me śrutvā ko nu dadyāt pratiśrayam॥ yo māṃ kaścid vāsayet na sa māṃ kopayed iha॥ 13-144-14॥

(Who would let Durvasa, an honored Brāhmaṇa, stay in the house? And having heard my insulting speech, who indeed would give shelter? Whoever might let me stay, he should not anger me here. (13-144-14))
Who would let Durvasa, an honored Brāhmaṇa, stay in their house? And after hearing my insults, who indeed would give me shelter? Whoever lets me stay, must not provoke me here. (13-144-14)
तं स्म नाद्रियते कश्चित्ततोऽहं तमवासयम्। स स्म भुङ्क्ते सहस्राणां बहूनामन्नमेकदा। एकदा स्माल्पकं भुङ्क्ते न वैति च पुनर्गृहान् ॥१३-१४४-१६॥
taṃ sma nādriyate kaścit tato'haṃ tam avāsayam। sa sma bhuṅkte sahasrāṇāṃ bahūnām annam ekadā। ekadā sm ālpakaṃ bhuṅkte na vaiti ca punar gṛhān ॥13-144-16॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; स्म (sma) - indeed; नाद्रियते (nādriyate) - does not esteem; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; अहम् (aham) - I; तम् (tam) - him; अवासयम् (avāsayam) - hosted; स (sa) - he; स्म (sma) - indeed; भुङ्क्ते (bhuṅkte) - eats; सहस्राणाम् (sahasrāṇām) - of thousands; बहूनाम् (bahūnām) - of many; अन्नम् (annam) - food; एकदा (ekadā) - at one time; एकदा (ekadā) - one time; स्म (sma) - indeed; अल्पकम् (ālpakaṃ) - little; भुङ्क्ते (bhuṅkte) - eats; न (na) - not; वैति (vaiti) - returns; च (ca) - and; पुनः (punar) - again; गृहान् (gṛhān) - houses;]
(Him indeed not esteems anyone; therefore I him hosted. He indeed eats at one time food of thousands of many. At one time indeed a little eats, not returns and again to houses.)
No one truly esteems him; therefore, I gave him shelter. He at times eats the food of thousands, at times only a little, and does not return again to the houses. (13-144-16)
अकस्माच्च प्रहसति तथाकस्मात्प्ररोदिति। न चास्य वयसा तुल्यः पृथिव्यामभवत्तदा ॥१३-१४४-१७॥
akasmāc ca prahasati tathā akasmāt praroditi। na ca asya vayasā tulyaḥ pṛthivyām abhavat tadā ॥13-144-17॥

(Suddenly and he laughs; likewise, suddenly he weeps. Not and of him in age equal on the earth was then.)
He suddenly laughs and likewise suddenly weeps. At that time, there was no one on earth equal to him in age. (13-144-17)
सोऽस्मदावसथं गत्वा शय्याश्चास्तरणानि च। कन्याश्चालङ्कृता दग्ध्वा ततो व्यपगतः स्वयम् ॥१३-१४४-१८॥
so'smadāvasathaṃ gatvā śayyāś cāstaraṇāni ca | kanyāś cālaṅkṛtā dagdhvā tato vyapagataḥ svayam ॥13-144-18॥

(He, having gone to our residence, beds and coverings and maidens adorned having burned, then departed himself.)
He went to our residence, burned the beds, coverings, and adorned maidens, and then departed on his own. (13-144-18)
अथ मामब्रवीद्भूयः स मुनिः संशितव्रतः। कृष्ण पायसमिच्छामि भोक्तुमित्येव सत्वरः ॥१३-१४४-१९॥
atha mām abravīd bhūyaḥ sa muniḥ saṁśita-vrataḥ। kṛṣṇa pāyasam icchāmi bhoktum ity eva satvaraḥ ॥13-144-19॥
[अथ (atha) - then; माम् (mām) - to me; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; सः (saḥ) - he; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; संशितव्रतः (saṁśita-vrataḥ) - one of firm vow; कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - Kṛṣṇa; पायसम् (pāyasam) - milk-rice; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I desire; भोक्तुम् (bhoktum) - to eat; इति (iti) - thus; एव (eva) - indeed; सत्त्वरः (satvaraḥ) - hurried;]
(Then to me said again that sage of firm vow: "Kṛṣṇa, milk-rice I wish to eat"—thus indeed, hurried.)
Then, that sage of firm vow said to me again, hurriedly: "Kṛṣṇa, I want to eat milk-rice." (13-144-19)
सदैव तु मया तस्य चित्तज्ञेन गृहे जनः। सर्वाण्येवान्नपानानि भक्ष्याश्चोच्चावचास्तथा ॥ भवन्तु सत्कृतानीति पूर्वमेव प्रचोदितः ॥१३-१४४-२०॥
sadaiva tu mayā tasya cittajñena gṛhe janaḥ। sarvāṇyevānnapānāni bhakṣyāścoccaavacāstathā॥ bhavantu satkṛtānīti pūrvameva pracoditaḥ॥13-144-20॥
[सदैव (sadaiva) - always; तु (tu) - but; मया (mayā) - by me; तस्य (tasya) - of him; चित्तज्ञेन (cittajñena) - knower of the mind; गृहे (gṛhe) - in the house; जनः (janaḥ) - person; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; एव (eva) - indeed; अन्नपानानि (annapānāni) - foods and drinks; भक्ष्याः (bhakṣyāḥ) - edibles; च (ca) - and; उच्चावचाः (uccāvacāḥ) - of high and low kind; तथा (tathā) - likewise; भवंतु (bhavantu) - let be; सत्कृतानि (satkṛtāni) - honored; इति (iti) - thus; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - before; एव (eva) - indeed; प्रचोदितः (pracoditaḥ) - has been instructed;]
(Always but by me, of him, by the mind-knower, in the house, the person, all indeed foods and drinks, and edibles of high and low kind likewise, let be honored thus—before indeed has been instructed.)
But always, by me, the person in his house who knows the mind has already been instructed before that all foods and drinks, and all kinds of edibles, both high and low, should be made honored thus. (13-144-20)
ततोऽहं ज्वलमानं वै पायसं प्रत्यवेदयम्। तद्भुक्त्वैव तु स क्षिप्रं ततो वचनमब्रवीत् ॥ क्षिप्रमङ्गानि लिम्पस्व पायसेनेति स स्म ह ॥१३-१४४-२१॥
tato 'haṃ jvalamānaṃ vai pāyasaṃ pratyavedayam। tad bhuktvaiva tu sa kṣipraṃ tato vacanam abravīt॥ kṣipram aṅgāni limpāsva pāyaseneti sa sma ha॥13-144-21॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अहम् (aham) - I; ज्वलमानम् (jvalamānam) - burning; वै (vai) - indeed; पायसम् (pāyasam) - rice pudding; प्रत्यवेदयम् (pratyavedayam) - I offered; तत् (tat) - that; भुक्त्वा (bhuktvā) - having eaten; एव (eva) - indeed; तु (tu) - but; सः (saḥ) - he; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; ततः (tataḥ) - then; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - he spoke; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; अङ्गानि (aṅgāni) - limbs; लिम्पस्व (limpasva) - anoint; पायसेन (pāyasena) - with rice pudding; इति (iti) - thus; सः (saḥ) - he; स्म (sma) - indeed; ह (ha) - truly;]
(Then I indeed offered the burning rice pudding. Having indeed eaten that, but he, quickly then, spoke speech. Quickly anoint the limbs with rice pudding thus, he indeed truly (said). (13-144-21))
Then I offered the hot rice pudding. After he had eaten it, he quickly said these words: "Quickly anoint your limbs with the rice pudding." (13-144-21)
अविमृश्यैव च ततः कृतवानस्मि तत्तथा। तेनोच्छिष्टेन गात्राणि शिरश्चैवाभ्यमृक्षयम् ॥१३-१४४-२२॥
avimṛśyaiva ca tataḥ kṛtavānasmi tattathā। tenocchiṣṭena gātrāṇi śiraścaivābhyamṛkṣayam ॥13-144-22॥
[अविमृश्यैव (avimṛśyaiva) - without considering indeed; च (ca) - and; ततः (tataḥ) - after that; कृतवान् (kṛtavān) - I have done; अस्मि (asmi) - am; तत् (tat) - that; तथा (tathā) - thus; तेन (tena) - with that; उच्छिष्टेन (ucchiṣṭena) - with leftovers; गात्राणि (gātrāṇi) - limbs; शिरः (śiraḥ) - head; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; अभ्यमृक्षयम् (abhyamṛkṣayam) - I rubbed;]
(Without considering indeed and after that I have done that thus. With that leftover, limbs, head and indeed I rubbed.)
Without thinking, I did just that; then with those leftovers, I rubbed my limbs and my head as well. (13-144-22)
स ददर्श तदाभ्याशे मातरं ते शुभाननाम्। तामपि स्मयमानः स पायसेनाभ्यलेपयत् ॥१३-१४४-२३॥
sa dadarśa tadābhyāśe mātaraṃ te śubhānanām। tām api smayamānaḥ sa pāyasenābhyalepayat ॥13-144-23॥
[स (sa) - he; ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; तदा-अभ्याशे (tadābhyāśe) - in the proximity at that time; मातरं (mātaram) - mother; ते (te) - your; शुभा-अननाम् (śubhānanām) - of auspicious face; ताम् (tām) - her; अपि (api) - also; स्मयमानः (smayamānaḥ) - smiling; स (sa) - he; पायसेन (pāyasena) - with payasa (rice pudding); अभ्यलेपयत् (abhyalepayat) - anointed, smeared;]
(He saw in proximity at that time your mother of auspicious face. Her also, smiling, he anointed with payasa.)
He saw your mother with an auspicious face nearby at that time, and smiling, he also anointed her with payasa (rice pudding). (13-144-23)
मुनिः पायसदिग्धाङ्गीं रथे तूर्णमयोजयत्। तमारुह्य रथं चैव निर्ययौ स गृहान्मम ॥१३-१४४-२४॥
muniḥ pāyasadigdhāṅgīṃ rathe tūrṇamayojayat। tam āruhya rathaṃ caiva niryayau sa gṛhān mama ॥13-144-24॥
[मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; पायसदिग्धाङ्गीं (pāyasadigdhāṅgīṃ) - whose body was smeared with rice-pudding; रथे (rathe) - to the chariot; तूर्णम् (tūrṇam) - quickly; अयोजयत् (ayojayat) - caused to be yoked (joined); तम् (tam) - her; आारुह्य (āruhya) - having ascended; रथम् (ratham) - chariot; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; निर्ययौ (niryayau) - departed; स (sa) - he; गृहात् (gṛhāt) - from the house; मम (mama) - my;]
(The sage quickly caused her whose body was smeared with rice-pudding to be yoked to the chariot. Having ascended the chariot, indeed he departed from my house.)
The sage swiftly yoked her, whose body was smeared with rice-pudding, to the chariot. Mounting the chariot, he left my house. (13-144-24)
अग्निवर्णो ज्वलन्धीमान्स द्विजो रथधुर्यवत्। प्रतोदेनातुदद्बालां रुक्मिणीं मम पश्यतः ॥१३-१४४-२५॥
agnivarṇo jvalandhīmān sa dvijo rathadhuryavat। pratodenātudad bālāṃ rukmiṇīṃ mama paśyataḥ॥13-144-25॥
[अग्निवर्णः (agnivarṇaḥ) (agnivarṇaḥ) - of fire color; ज्वलन्धीमान् (jvalandhīmān) (jvalandhīmān) - blazing; स (sa) (sa) - he; द्विजः (dvijaḥ) (dvijaḥ) - Brāhmaṇa; रथधुर्यवत् (rathadhuryavat) (rathadhuryavat) - like a charioteer; प्रतोदेन (pratodena) (pratodena) - with a goad; अातुदत् (atudat) (atudat) - struck; बालाम् (bālām) (bālām) - the young woman; रुक्मिणीम् (rukmiṇīm) (rukmiṇīm) - Rukmini; मम (mama) (mama) - before me; पश्यतः (paśyataḥ) (paśyataḥ) - as I was watching;]
(Of fire color, blazing, he, the Brāhmaṇa, like a charioteer, with a goad struck the young woman Rukmini before me as I was watching.)
The Brāhmaṇa, blazing and of fiery color, like a charioteer, struck the young Rukmini with a goad before my eyes. (13-144-25)
न च मे स्तोकमप्यासीद्दुःखमीर्ष्याकृतं तदा। ततः स राजमार्गेण महता निर्ययौ बहिः ॥१३-१४४-२६॥
na ca me stokam-api-āsīt duḥkham īrṣyā-kṛtam tadā। tataḥ sa rājamārgeṇa mahatā niryayau bahiḥ ॥13-144-26॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - to me; स्तोकम् (stokam) - a little; अपि (api) - even; असीत् (āsīt) - there was; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - pain; ईर्ष्या-कृतम् (īrṣyā-kṛtam) - caused by jealousy; तदा (tadā) - then; ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; राजमार्गेण (rājamārgeṇa) - by the royal road; महता (mahatā) - great; निर्ययौ (niryayau) - departed; बहिः (bahiḥ) - outside;]
(Not and to me even a little there was pain caused by jealousy then. Then he by the great royal road departed outside. (13-144-26))
Nor did I have even a little pain caused by jealousy at that time. Then he departed outside by the great royal road. (13-144-26)
तद्दृष्ट्वा महदाश्चर्यं दाशार्हा जातमन्यवः। तत्राजल्पन्मिथः केचित्समाभाष्य परस्परम् ॥१३-१४४-२७॥
taddṛṣṭvā mahadāścaryaṃ dāśārhā jātamanyavaḥ. tatrājalpanmithaḥ kecitsamābhāṣya parasparam ॥13-144-27॥
[तत् (tat) - that; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; महत् (mahat) - great; आश्चर्यं (āścaryam) - wonder; दाशार्हाः (dāśārhāḥ) - the Daśārhas; जातमन्यवः (jātamanyavaḥ) - arisen with anger; तत्र (tatra) - there; अजल्पन् (ajalpan) - did not speak; मिथः (mithaḥ) - to each other; केचित् (kecit) - some; समाभाष्य (samābhāṣya) - having conversed; परस्परम् (parasparam) - with one another;]
(That having seen great wonder the Daśārhas arisen with anger there did not speak to each other; some having conversed with one another.)
Having seen that great wonder, the Daśārhas, whose anger had arisen, there did not speak to one another; some conversed with each other. (13-144-27)
ब्राह्मणा एव जायेरन्नान्यो वर्णः कथञ्चन। को ह्येनं रथमास्थाय जीवेदन्यः पुमानिह ॥१३-१४४-२८॥
brāhmaṇā eva jāyerann anyo varṇaḥ kathañcana। ko hy enaṃ ratham āsthāya jīvet anyaḥ pumān iha ॥13-144-28॥
[ब्राह्मणा (brāhmaṇāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; एव (eva) - only; जायेरन् (jāyeran) - should be born; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - other; वर्णः (varṇaḥ) - class; कथञ्चन (kathañcana) - in any way; को (kaḥ) - who; हि (hi) - indeed; एनम् (enam) - this; रथम् (ratham) - chariot; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having mounted; जीवेत् (jīvet) - could live; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - other; पुमान् (pumān) - man; इह (iha) - here;]
(Brāhmaṇas only should be born, not any other class in any way. Who indeed, having mounted this chariot, could live — any other man here?)
Brāhmaṇas alone should be born, and in no way another class. For who else could possibly live here, having ascended this chariot? (13-144-28)
आशीविषविषं तीक्ष्णं ततस्तीक्ष्णतरं विषम्। ब्रह्माशीविषदग्धस्य नास्ति कश्चिच्चिकित्सकः ॥१३-१४४-२९॥
āśīviṣaviṣaṃ tīkṣṇaṃ tatastīkṣṇataraṃ viṣam। brahmāśīviṣadagdhasya nāsti kaściccikitsakaḥ ॥13-144-29॥
[आशीविषविषं (āśīviṣaviṣam) - snake-poison; (āśīviṣa: snake + viṣa: poison); तीक्ष्णं (tīkṣṇam) - sharp; intense; powerful; ततः (tataḥ) - than that; thereafter; तीक्ष्णतरं (tīkṣṇataram) - sharper; yet more intense; विषम् (viṣam) - poison; ब्रह्माशीविषदग्धस्य (brahmāśīviṣadagdhasya) - of one burned by the poison of (spiritual) Brahman-snake; (brahma: Brahman + āśīviṣa: snake + dagdha: burned [genitive]); नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; कश्चित् (kaścit) - any; anyone; चिकित्सकः (cikitsakaḥ) - physician; healer;]
(Snake-poison is sharp; sharper than that is the poison. Of one who is burned by the Brahman-snake-poison, there is not anyone physician.)
Snake poison is intense; but even more intense is another poison. For one who is burned by the poison of the Brahman-snake, there is absolutely no healer. (13-144-29)
तस्मिन्व्रजति दुर्धर्षे प्रास्खलद्रुक्मिणी पथि। तां नामर्षयत श्रीमांस्ततस्तूर्णमचोदयत् ॥१३-१४४-३०॥
tasmin vrajati durdharṣe prāskhalad rukmiṇī pathi। tāṁ nāmarṣayata śrīmāṁs tataḥ tūrṇam acodayat ॥13-144-30॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that (situation); व्रजति (vrajati) - (he) proceeds; दुर्धर्षे (durdharṣe) - Durdharṣa (proper noun, name); प्रास्खलत् (prāskhalat) - stumbled; रुक्मिणी (rukmiṇī) - Rukmiṇī (proper noun, name); पथि (pathi) - on the path; ताम् (tām) - her; न (na) - not; अमर्षयत् (amarṣayat) - (he) tolerated; श्रीमाञ् (śrīmān) - the illustrious (Kṛṣṇa); ततः (tataḥ) - then; तूर्णम् (tūrṇam) - quickly; अचोदयत् (acodayat) - (he) urged (the charioteer or horses);]
(In that (situation) as Durdharṣa proceeds, Rukmiṇī stumbled on the path; her the illustrious (Kṛṣṇa) did not tolerate, then quickly urged (on).)
As Durdharṣa proceeded on the path, Rukmiṇī stumbled. The illustrious Kṛṣṇa could not tolerate this and promptly urged the chariot onward. (13-144-30)
ततः परमसङ्क्रुद्धो रथात्प्रस्कन्द्य स द्विजः। पदातिरुत्पथेनैव प्राधावद्दक्षिणामुखः ॥१३-१४४-३१॥
tataḥ paramasaṅkruddho rathāt praskandya sa dvijaḥ। padātir utpathenaiva prādhāvad dakṣiṇāmukhaḥ ॥13-144-31॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; परमसङ्क्रुद्धः (paramasaṅkruddhaḥ) - extremely enraged; रथात् (rathāt) - from the chariot; प्रस्कन्द्य (praskandya) - having leapt down; सः (saḥ) - he; द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - the brāhmaṇa; पदातिः (padātiḥ) - on foot (as a foot soldier); उत्पथेन (utpathena) - by the side of the road; एव (eva) - indeed; प्राधावत् (prādhāvat) - ran; दक्षिणामुखः (dakṣiṇāmukhaḥ) - facing south;]
(Then extremely enraged, having leapt down from the chariot, he—the brāhmaṇa—as a foot soldier, indeed by the side of the road, ran, facing south.)
Then, extremely enraged, the brāhmaṇa leapt down from his chariot and, on foot, ran along the side of the road, facing south. (13-144-31)
तमुत्पथेन धावन्तमन्वधावं द्विजोत्तमम्। तथैव पायसादिग्धः प्रसीद भगवन्निति ॥१३-१४४-३२॥
tam utpathena dhāvantam anvadhāvaṃ dvijottamam। tathaiva pāyasādigdhaḥ prasīda bhagavan iti ॥13-144-32॥
[तम् (tam) - him; उत्पथेन (utpathena) - by a wrong path; धावन्तम् (dhāvantam) - running; अन्वधावम् (anvadhāvam) - I chased; द्विजोत्तमम् (dvijottamam) - best of the twice-born; तथैव (tathaiva) - just so; पायस-अदिग्धः (pāyasa-adigdhaḥ) - smeared with rice-milk; प्रसीद (prasīda) - be gracious; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O venerable one; इति (iti) - thus;]
(Him by a wrong path running I chased, best of the twice-born. Just so, smeared with rice-milk, "Be gracious, O venerable one," thus.)
I chased him as he ran along a wrong path, O best of the twice-born. In the same way, being smeared with rice-milk, I said, "Be gracious, O venerable one." (13-144-32)
ततो विलोक्य तेजस्वी ब्राह्मणो मामुवाच ह। जितः क्रोधस्त्वया कृष्ण प्रकृत्यैव महाभुज ॥१३-१४४-३३॥
tato vilokya tejasvī brāhmaṇo mām uvāca ha। jitaḥ krodhas tvayā kṛṣṇa prakṛtyaiva mahābhuja ॥13-144-33॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; विलोक्य (vilokya) - having seen; तेजस्वी (tejasvī) - the radiant one; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - the brāhmaṇa; माम् (mām) - to me; उवाच (uvāca) - said; ह (ha) - indeed; जितः (jitaḥ) - conquered; क्रोधः (krodhaḥ) - anger; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - O Kṛṣṇa; प्रकृत्या (prakṛtyā) - by nature; एव (eva) - indeed; महाभुज (mahābhuja) - O mighty-armed one;]
(Then, having seen, the radiant brāhmaṇa indeed said to me: Conquered is anger by you, O Kṛṣṇa, indeed by nature, O mighty-armed one.)
Then, having seen, the radiant brāhmaṇa said to me: "O Kṛṣṇa, you have already conquered anger by nature, O mighty-armed one." (13-144-33)
न तेऽपराधमिह वै दृष्टवानस्मि सुव्रत। प्रीतोऽस्मि तव गोविन्द वृणु कामान्यथेप्सितान् ॥ प्रसन्नस्य च मे तात पश्य व्युष्टिर्यथाविधा ॥१३-१४४-३४॥
na te'parādham iha vai dṛṣṭavān asmi suvrata। prīto'smi tava govinda vṛṇu kāmān yathepsitān॥ prasannasya ca me tāta paśya vyuṣṭir yathāvidhā॥ 13-144-34॥
[न (na) - not; ते (te) - your; अपराधम् (aparādham) - fault; इह (iha) - here; वै (vai) - indeed; दृष्टवान् (dṛṣṭavān) - I have seen; अस्मि (asmi) - am; सुव्रत (suvrata) - O well-vowed one; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; अस्मि (asmi) - am; तव (tava) - with you; गोविन्द (govinda) - O Govinda; वृणु (vṛṇu) - choose; कामान् (kāmān) - desires; यथ (yatha) - as; इप्सितान् (ipsitān) - desired; प्रसन्नस्य (prasannasya) - of (me) being gracious; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - my; तात (tāta) - O dear one; पश्य (paśya) - see; व्युष्टिः (vyuṣṭiḥ) - favor; grace; यथाविधा (yathāvidhā) - as is proper; १३-१४४-३४ (13-144-34) - (13-144-34);]
(Not your fault here indeed I have seen, O well-vowed one; pleased am I with you, O Govinda, choose desires as (they are) desired. Of (me) being gracious, and my O dear one, see favor as is proper. (13-144-34))
O well-vowed one, I have not seen any fault of yours here; I am pleased with you, O Govinda. Choose whichever wishes you desire. And now, O dear one, see my favor granted as is proper. (13-144-34)
यावदेव मनुष्याणामन्ने भावो भविष्यति। यथैवान्ने तथा तेषां त्वयि भावो भविष्यति ॥१३-१४४-३५॥
yāvadeva manuṣyāṇām anne bhāvo bhaviṣyati। yathaivānne tathā teṣāṃ tvayi bhāvo bhaviṣyati ॥13-144-35॥
[यावदेव (yāvadeva) - to whatever extent; as much as; मनुष्याणाम् (manuṣyāṇām) - of people; of humans; अन्ने (anne) - in food; भावः (bhāvaḥ) - regard; feeling; state; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; will arise; यथा एव (yathā eva) - just as; अन्ने (anne) - in food; तथा (tathā) - so; likewise; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of those; of them; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; भावः (bhāvaḥ) - regard; feeling; state; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; will arise;]
(To whatever extent of people in food regard will be; just as in food, so of them in you regard will be.)
To whatever extent people have regard for food, just so will they have regard for you, as is their regard for food. (13-144-35)
यावच्च पुण्या लोकेषु त्वयि कीर्तिर्भविष्यति। त्रिषु लोकेषु तावच्च वैशिष्ट्यं प्रतिपत्स्यसे ॥ सुप्रियः सर्वलोकस्य भविष्यसि जनार्दन ॥१३-१४४-३६॥
yāvatca puṇyā lokeṣu tvayi kīrtir bhaviṣyati। triṣu lokeṣu tāvatca vaiśiṣṭyaṃ pratipatsyase॥ supriyaḥ sarvalokasya bhaviṣyasi janārdana॥13-144-36॥
[यावच्च (yāvatca) - as long as; पुण्या (puṇyā) - auspicious; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - in the worlds; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; कीर्तिः (kīrtiḥ) - fame; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; त्रिषु (triṣu) - in three; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - in the worlds; तावच्च (tāvatca) - so long; वैशिष्ट्यम् (vaiśiṣṭyam) - distinction; प्रतिपत्स्यसे (pratipatsyase) - you will attain; सुप्रियः (supriyaḥ) - most dear; सर्वलोकस्य (sarvalokasya) - of all the world; भविष्यसि (bhaviṣyasi) - you will be; जनार्दन (janārdana) - O Janardana;]
(As long as auspicious fame will be in the worlds in you, in the three worlds so long distinction you will attain. Most dear of all the world you will be, O Janardana.)
As long as your auspicious fame endures in the worlds, for that long you will possess distinction throughout the three worlds. You will be most dear to all beings, O Janardana. (13-144-36)
यत्ते भिन्नं च दग्धं च यच्च किञ्चिद्विनाशितम्। सर्वं तथैव द्रष्टासि विशिष्टं वा जनार्दन ॥१३-१४४-३७॥
yat te bhinnaṃ ca dagdhaṃ ca yac ca kiñcid vināśitam। sarvaṃ tathaiva draṣṭāsi viśiṣṭaṃ vā janārdana ॥13-144-37॥
[यत् (yat) - which; ते (te) - to you; भिन्नं (bhinnaṃ) - broken; च (ca) - and; दग्धं (dagdhaṃ) - burnt; च (ca) - and; यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - something; विनाशितम् (vināśitam) - destroyed; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; द्रष्टासि (draṣṭāsi) - you will see; विशिष्टं (viśiṣṭam) - distinguished; वा (vā) - or; जनार्दन (janārdana) - O Janārdana;]
(Which to you is broken and burnt and which, and something destroyed, all just so you will see, or distinguished, O Janārdana.)
O Janārdana, whatever is broken and burnt and whatever has been destroyed, all this you will see just so, or as something special. (13-144-37)
यावदेतत्प्रलिप्तं ते गात्रेषु मधुसूदन। अतो मृत्युभयं नास्ति यावदिच्छा तवाच्युत ॥१३-१४४-३८॥
yāvad etat praliptaṁ te gātreṣu madhusūdana। ato mṛtyubhayam nāsti yāvad icchā tava ācyuta ॥13-144-38॥
[यावत् (yāvat) (yāvat) - as long as; एतत् (etat) (etat) - this; प्रलिप्तम् (praliptam) (praliptam) - smeared; ते (te) (te) - on your; गात्रेषु (gātreṣu) (gātreṣu) - body parts; मधुसूदन (madhusūdana) (madhusūdana) - O Madhusudana; अतः (ataḥ) (ataḥ) - therefore; मृत्युभयम् (mṛtyubhayam) (mṛtyubhayam) - fear of death; नास्ति (nāsti) (nāsti) - does not exist; यावत् (yāvat) (yāvat) - as long as; इच्छा (icchā) (icchā) - will; तव (tava) (tava) - your; अच्युत (acyuta) (acyuta) - O Acyuta;]
(As long as this is smeared on your body parts, O Madhusudana, therefore fear of death does not exist, as long as it is your will, O Acyuta.)
O Madhusudana, as long as this is smeared on your body, there is no fear of death, so long as it is your wish, O Acyuta. (13-144-38)
न तु पादतले लिप्ते कस्मात्ते पुत्रकाद्य वै। नैतन्मे प्रियमित्येव स मां प्रीतोऽब्रवीत्तदा ॥ इत्युक्तोऽहं शरीरं स्वमपश्यं श्रीसमायुतम् ॥१३-१४४-३९॥
na tu pādatale lipte kasmātte putrakādya vai. naitanme priyamityeva sa māṃ prīto'bravīttadā ॥ ityukto'haṃ śarīraṃ svamapaśyaṃ śrīsammāyutam ॥13-144-39॥
[न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; पादतले (pādatale) - on the sole of the foot; लिप्ते (lipte) - smeared; कस्मात् (kasmāt) - why; ते (te) - to you; पुत्रक (putraka) - O son; आद्य (ādya) - at first; वै (vai) - indeed; न (na) - not; एतत् (etat) - this; मे (me) - to me; प्रियं (priyam) - pleasing; इति (iti) - thus; एव (eva) - indeed; स (sa) - he; माम् (mām) - to me; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; तदा (tadā) - then; इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; शरीरं (śarīram) - body; स्वम् (svam) - my own; अपश्यं (apaśyam) - beheld; श्रीसमायुतम् (śrīsamāyutam) - endowed with splendour;]
(But not when the foot sole is smeared at first for you, O son, indeed. "This is not pleasing to me"—thus, he, pleased, then said to me. Thus addressed, I beheld my own body endowed with splendour. (13-144-39))

रुक्मिणीं चाब्रवीत्प्रीतः सर्वस्त्रीणां वरं यशः। कीर्तिं चानुत्तमां लोके समवाप्स्यसि शोभने ॥१३-१४४-४०॥
rukmiṇīṃ cābravītpnītaḥ sarvastrīṇāṃ varaṃ yaśaḥ। kīrtiṃ cānuttamāṃ loke samavāpsyasi śobhane॥13-144-40॥
[रुक्मिणीं (rukmiṇīm) - Rukmini (accusative singular); च (ca) - and; आब्रवीत् (ābravīt) - (he) spoke; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - having been pleased; सर्वस्त्रीणां (sarva-strīṇām) - of all women; वरं (varaṃ) - best; यशः (yaśaḥ) - fame; कीर्तिं (kīrtiṃ) - glory; च (ca) - and; अनुत्तमां (anuttamām) - unsurpassed; लोके (loke) - in the world; समवाप्स्यसि (samavāpsyasi) - you will obtain; शोभने (śobhane) - O beautiful one;]
(Rukmini and (he) spoke, having been pleased: of all women, the best fame, and glory unsurpassed in the world you will obtain, O beautiful one.)
Having been pleased, (he) spoke to Rukmini: "O beautiful one, among all women you shall obtain the highest fame and unsurpassed glory in the world." (13-144-40)
न त्वां जरा वा रोगो वा वैवर्ण्यं चापि भामिनि। स्प्रक्ष्यन्ति पुण्यगन्धा च कृष्णमाराधयिष्यसि ॥१३-१४४-४१॥
na tvāṃ jarā vā rogo vā vaivarṇyaṃ cāpi bhāmini. spraakṣyanti puṇyagandhā ca kṛṣṇam ārādhayiṣyasi ॥13-144-41॥
[न (na) - not; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; जरा (jarā) - old age; वा (vā) - or; रोगः (rogo) - disease; वा (vā) - or; वैवर्ण्यम् (vaivarṇyam) - discoloration; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; भामिनि (bhāmini) - O beautiful lady; स्प्रक्ष्यन्ति (sprakṣyanti) - will touch; पुण्यगन्धाः (puṇyagandhāḥ) - auspicious scents; च (ca) - and; कृष्णम् (kṛṣṇam) - Kṛṣṇa; आराधयिष्यसि (ārādhayiṣyasi) - you will worship;]
(Not you old age or disease or discoloration and also, O beautiful lady, will touch. Auspicious scents and Kṛṣṇa you will worship.)
O beautiful lady, neither old age nor disease nor discoloration will affect you; auspicious scents will touch you, and you will worship Kṛṣṇa. (13-144-41)
षोडशानां सहस्राणां वधूनां केशवस्य ह। वरिष्ठा सहलोक्या च केशवस्य भविष्यसि ॥१३-१४४-४२॥
ṣoḍaśānāṃ sahasrāṇāṃ vadhūnāṃ keśavasya ha। variṣṭhā sahalokyā ca keśavasya bhaviṣyasi॥13-144-42॥
[षोडशानां (ṣoḍaśānāṃ) - of sixteen; सहस्राणां (sahasrāṇāṃ) - of thousands; वधूनां (vadhūnām) - of brides; केशवस्य (keśavasya) - of Keśava; ह (ha) - indeed; वरिष्ठा (variṣṭhā) - foremost; सहलोक्या (sahalokyā) - sharing the same world; च (ca) - and; केशवस्य (keśavasya) - of Keśava; भविष्यसि (bhaviṣyasi) - you shall be;]
(Of sixteen thousands of brides of Keśava, indeed, the foremost and sharing the same world, of Keśava, you shall be.)
Of the sixteen thousand brides of Keśava, indeed you shall be the foremost and reside in the same world with Keśava. (13-144-42)
तव मातरमित्युक्त्वा ततो मां पुनरब्रवीत्। प्रस्थितः सुमहातेजा दुर्वासा वह्निवज्ज्वलन् ॥१३-१४४-४३॥
tava mātaram ity uktvā tato māṃ punar abravīt। prasthitaḥ sumahāteja durvāsā vahnivaj-jvalan॥13-144-43॥
[तव (tava) - your; मातरम् (mātaram) - mother; इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; ततः (tataḥ) - then; माम् (mām) - to me; पुनः (punar) - again; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - he said; प्रस्थितः (prasthitaḥ) - having departed; सुमहातेजा (sumahāteja) - of great brilliance; दुर्वासा (durvāsā) - Durvāsa; वह्निवत् (vahnivat) - like fire; ज्वलन् (jvalan) - blazing;]
(Having spoken "your mother," then to me again he said; having departed, the greatly brilliant Durvāsa, blazing like fire.)
Having said "your mother," then again he spoke to me; the greatly brilliant Durvāsa, blazing like fire, departed. (13-144-43)
एषैव ते बुद्धिरस्तु ब्राह्मणान्प्रति केशव। इत्युक्त्वा स तदा पुत्र तत्रैवान्तरधीयत ॥१३-१४४-४४॥
eṣaiva te buddhirastu brāhmaṇānprati keśava। ityuktvā sa tadā putra tatraivāntaradhīyata ॥13-144-44॥
[एषैव (eṣa eva) - this alone; indeed; ते (te) - your; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - understanding; अस्तु (astu) - let there be; ब्राह्मणान्प्रति (brāhmaṇān prati) - towards the brāhmaṇas; केशव (keśava) - Keśava; इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; स (sa) - he; तदा (tadā) - then; पुत्र (putra) - O son; तत्रैव (tatra eva) - right there; अन्तरधीयत (antaradhīyata) - disappeared;]
(This alone, your understanding let there be towards the brāhmaṇas, O Keśava. Thus having spoken, he then, O son, right there disappeared.)
Let this alone be your understanding towards the brāhmaṇas, O Keśava. Having spoken thus, he then, O son, disappeared right there. (13-144-44)
तस्मिन्नन्तर्हिते चाहमुपांशुव्रतमादिशम्। यत्किञ्चिद्ब्राह्मणो ब्रूयात्सर्वं कुर्यामिति प्रभो ॥१३-१४४-४५॥
tasminn antarhite cāham upāṃśuvratam ādiśam | yat kiñcid brāhmaṇo brūyāt sarvaṃ kuryām iti prabho ॥13-144-45॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in him; अन्तर्हिते (antarhite) - having disappeared; च (ca) - and; अहम् (aham) - I; उपांशुव्रतम् (upāṃśuvratam) - the upāṃśu vow; आदिशम् (ādiśam) - enjoined; यत् (yat) - whatever; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - the Brāhmaṇa; ब्रूयात् (brūyāt) - might say; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; कुर्याम् (kuryām) - I should do; इति (iti) - thus; प्रभो (prabho) - O Lord;]
(In him having disappeared, and I enjoined the upāṃśu vow; whatever anything the Brāhmaṇa might say, all I should do, thus, O Lord.)
When he had vanished, I took on the upāṃśu vow; O Lord, whatever the Brāhmaṇa might say, I resolved to do all of it. (13-144-45)
एतद्व्रतमहं कृत्वा मात्रा ते सह पुत्रक। ततः परमहृष्टात्मा प्राविशं गृहमेव च ॥१३-१४४-४६॥
etadvratam ahaṃ kṛtvā mātrā te saha putraka. tataḥ paramahṛṣṭātmā prāviśaṃ gṛhameva ca ॥13-144-46॥
[एतद्व्रतम् (etad-vratam) - this vow; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having performed; मात्रा (mātrā) - with (my) mother; ते (te) - your; सह (saha) - together with; पुत्रक (putraka) - O son; ततः (tataḥ) - then; परमहृष्टात्मा (parama-hṛṣṭātmā) - with exceedingly delighted mind; प्राविशम् (prāviśam) - I entered; गृहम् (gṛham) - house; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and;]
(This vow I having performed, with your mother together, O son; then, with exceedingly delighted mind, I entered the house indeed and.)
O son, after performing this vow together with your mother, I then, with a most delighted heart, entered the house.
प्रविष्टमात्रश्च गृहे सर्वं पश्यामि तन्नवम्। यद्भिन्नं यच्च वै दग्धं तेन विप्रेण पुत्रक ॥१३-१४४-४७॥
praviṣṭamātraś ca gṛhe sarvaṃ paśyāmi tan navam। yad bhinnaṃ yac ca vai dagdhaṃ tena vipreṇa putraka ॥13-144-47॥
[प्रविष्टमात्रः (praviṣṭamātraḥ) - having just entered; च (ca) - and; गृहे (gṛhe) - in the house; सर्वम् (sarvam) - everything; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; तत् (tat) - that; नवम् (navam) - new; यत् (yat) - which; भिन्नम् (bhinnaṃ) - broken; यच् (yac) - and which; च (ca) - and; वै (vai) - indeed; दग्धम् (dagdhaṃ) - burnt; तेन (tena) - by him; विप्रेण (vipreṇa) - by the brāhmaṇa; पुत्रक (putraka) - O son;]
(And having just entered the house, everything I see is new; whatever is broken and whatever indeed is burnt, by that Brāhmaṇa, O son.)
As soon as I entered the house, I saw that everything was new; whatever was broken and whatever was burnt, it was done by that Brāhmaṇa, O son. (13-144-47)
ततोऽहं विस्मयं प्राप्तः सर्वं दृष्ट्वा नवं दृढम्। अपूजयं च मनसा रौक्मिणेय द्विजं तदा ॥१३-१४४-४८॥
tato'haṃ vismayaṃ prāptaḥ sarvaṃ dṛṣṭvā navaṃ dṛḍham। apūjayaṃ ca manasā raukmiṇeya dvijaṃ tadā ॥13-144-48॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अहम् (aham) - I; विस्मयम् (vismayam) - wonder; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - attained; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; नवम् (navam) - new; दृढम् (dṛḍham) - firm; अपूजयं (apūjayaṃ) - I did not honor; च (ca) - and; मनसा (manasā) - with (my) mind; रौक्मिणेय (raukmiṇeya) - O son of Rukmiṇī; द्विजम् (dvijam) - the twice-born (brāhmaṇa); तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Then I, having attained wonder, having seen all the new (and) firm (things), I did not honor with (my) mind the twice-born, O son of Rukmiṇī, then.)
Then, O son of Rukmiṇī, having seen everything new and steadfast, I became filled with wonder and did not honor the brāhmaṇa mentally at that time. (13-144-48)
इत्यहं रौक्मिणेयस्य पृच्छतो भरतर्षभ। माहात्म्यं द्विजमुख्यस्य सर्वमाख्यातवांस्तदा ॥१३-१४४-४९॥
ityahaṁ raukmiṇeyasya pṛcchato bharatarṣabha। māhātmyaṁ dvijamukhyasya sarvamākhyātavāṁstadā ॥13-144-49॥
[इति (iti) - thus; अहम् (aham) - I; रौक्मिणेयस्य (raukmiṇeyasya) - of Rukmini’s son; पृच्छतः (pṛcchataḥ) - asking; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas; माहात्म्यम् (māhātmyaṁ) - greatness; द्विजमुख्यस्य (dvijamukhyasya) - of the foremost among twice-born; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; आख्यातवान् (ākhyātavān) - I have related; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Thus I, O bull among the Bharatas, to Rukmini’s son who was asking, have related all the greatness of the foremost among twice-born then.)
Thus, O best of the Bharatas, I narrated all the greatness of the foremost among twice-born to Rukmini’s son when he inquired. (13-144-49)
तथा त्वमपि कौन्तेय ब्राह्मणान्सततं प्रभो। पूजयस्व महाभागान्वाग्भिर्दानैश्च नित्यदा ॥१३-१४४-५०॥
tathā tvam api kaunteya brāhmaṇān satataṃ prabho। pūjayasva mahābhāgān vāgbhir dānaiś ca nityadā ॥13-144-50॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अपि (api) - also; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - son of Kunti; ब्राह्मणान् (brāhmaṇān) - Brāhmaṇas; सततं (satataṃ) - always; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord; पूजयस्व (pūjayasva) - honor; महाभागान् (mahābhāgān) - greatly fortunate ones; वाग्भिः (vāgbhiḥ) - with words; दानैः च (dānaiḥ ca) - and with gifts; नित्यदा (nityadā) - always;]
(Thus you also, O son of Kunti, always, O lord, honor the Brāhmaṇas, greatly fortunate ones, with words and with gifts, always.)
Therefore, O son of Kunti, you also, O lord, should always honor the greatly fortunate Brāhmaṇas with words and with gifts at all times. (13-144-50)
एवं व्युष्टिमहं प्राप्तो ब्राह्मणानां प्रसादजाम्। यच्च मामाह भीष्मोऽयं तत्सत्यं भरतर्षभ ॥१३-१४४-५१॥
evaṁ vyuṣṭim ahaṁ prāpto brāhmaṇānāṁ prasādajām। yac ca mām āha bhīṣmo 'yaṁ tat satyaṁ bharatarṣabha ॥13-144-51॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; व्युष्टिम् (vyuṣṭim) - dawn; अहम् (aham) - I; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - attained; ब्राह्मणानाम् (brāhmaṇānām) - of the Brāhmaṇas; प्रसादजाम् (prasādajām) - resulting from favour; यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; माम् (mām) - to me; आह (āha) - said; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhīṣma; अयम् (ayam) - this; तत् (tat) - that; सत्यं (satyaṁ) - true; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas;]
(Thus the dawn I have attained, resulting from the favour of the Brāhmaṇas. And what Bhīṣma, this one, said to me, that is true, O bull among the Bharatas (13-144-51))
Thus, I have reached the dawn through the favour of the Brāhmaṇas. And what Bhīṣma here has told me, O best of the Bharatas, is true. (13-144-51)
