दुर्वाससः प्रसादात्ते यत्तदा मधुसूदन। अवाप्तमिह विज्ञानं तन्मे व्याख्यातुमर्हसि ॥१३-१४५-१॥
durvāsasaḥ prasādāt te yat tadā madhusūdana। avāptam iha vijñānaṃ tan me vyākhyātum arhasi॥13-145-1॥
[दुर्वाससः (durvāsasaḥ) - of Durvāsas; (genitive singular); प्रसादात् (prasādāt) - from favor; from grace; ते (te) - to you; (dative singular); यत् (yat) - which; what; तदा (tadā) - then; at that time; मधुसूदन (madhusūdana) - O Madhusūdana; (Krishna); अवाप्तम् (avāptam) - attained; acquired; इह (iha) - here; in this place; विज्ञानम् (vijñānam) - knowledge; understanding; तत् (tat) - that; मे (me) - to me; (dative singular); व्याख्यातुम् (vyākhyātum) - to explain; to expound; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought; you are worthy (to do);]
(O Madhusūdana, which knowledge was attained here by you then from the favor of Durvāsas, that you ought to explain to me.)
O Madhusūdana, you ought to explain to me the knowledge that you then acquired here by the grace of Durvāsas. (13-145-1)
महाभाग्यं च यत्तस्य नामानि च महात्मनः। तत्त्वतो ज्ञातुमिच्छामि सर्वं मतिमतां वर ॥१३-१४५-२॥
mahābhāgyaṁ ca yat tasya nāmāni ca mahātmanaḥ | tattvato jñātum icchāmi sarvaṁ matimatāṁ vara ॥13-145-2॥
[महाभाग्यं (mahābhāgyaṁ) - great fortune; च (ca) - and; यत् (yat) - which; तस्य (tasya) - of him; नामानि (nāmāni) - names; च (ca) - and; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great soul; तत्त्वतः (tattvataḥ) - truly; ज्ञातुम् (jñātum) - to know; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; सर्वं (sarvaṁ) - all; मतिमतां (matimatām) - among the wise; वर (vara) - best;]
(Great fortune and which of him, names and of the great soul, truly to know, I wish all, best among the wise.)
O best among the wise, I wish to truly know all about the great fortune and the names of that great soul. (13-145-2)

हन्त ते कथयिष्यामि नमस्कृत्वा कपर्दिने। यदवाप्तं महाराज श्रेयो यच्चार्जितं यशः ॥१३-१४५-३॥
hanta te kathayiṣyāmi namaskṛtvā kapardine। yad avāptaṃ mahārāja śreyo yacc ārjitaṃ yaśaḥ ॥13-145-3॥
[हन्त (hanta) - indeed; ते (te) - to you; कथयिष्यामि (kathayiṣyāmi) - I will tell; नमस्कृत्वा (namaskṛtvā) - having saluted; कपर्दिने (kapardine) - to Kapardin (Śiva); यदवाप्तं (yad avāptam) - what has been obtained; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; श्रेयो (śreyaḥ) - higher good; यच्चार्जितं (yacc ārjitam) - and what has been acquired; यशः (yaśaḥ) - fame;]
(Indeed, to you I shall tell, having saluted Kapardin, O great king, what has been obtained, the higher good, and what fame has been acquired.)
O great king, indeed, after bowing to Kapardin, I shall tell you what has been obtained, the highest good, and the fame that has been gained. (13-145-3)
प्रयतः प्रातरुत्थाय यदधीये विशां पते। प्राञ्जलिः शतरुद्रीयं तन्मे निगदतः शृणु ॥१३-१४५-४॥
prayataḥ prātar-utthāya yad-adhīye viśāṃ pate। prāñjaliḥ śatarudrīyaṃ tan me nigadataḥ śṛṇu ॥13-145-4॥
[प्रयतः (prayataḥ) - with self-restraint; प्रातरुत्थाय (prātar-utthāya) - rising in the morning; यत् (yad) - what; अधीये (adhīye) - I recite; विशां पते (viśāṃ pate) - O lord of the people; प्राञ्जलिः (prāñjaliḥ) - with joined palms; शतरुद्रीयं (śatarudrīyaṃ) - śatarudrīya (the hundred Rudra hymns); तत् (tat) - that; मे (me) - to me; निगदतः (nigadataḥ) - as I speak; शृणु (śṛṇu) - listen;]
(With self-restraint, having risen in the morning, what I recite, O lord of the people, with joined palms, the Śatarudrīya, that to me as I speak, listen.)
O lord of the people, listen to me as I speak: With self-restraint, having risen in the morning, I recite with joined palms the Śatarudrīya hymn. (13-145-4)
प्रजापतिस्तत्ससृजे तपसोऽन्ते महातपाः। शङ्करस्त्वसृजत्तात प्रजाः स्थावरजङ्गमाः ॥१३-१४५-५॥
prajāpatis tatsasṛje tapaso'nte mahātapāḥ. śaṅkaras tvasṛjat tāta prajāḥ sthāvarajaṅgamāḥ ॥13-145-5॥
[प्रजापतिः (prajāpatiḥ) - Lord of creatures; तत् (tat) - that; ससृजे (sasṛje) - created; तपसः (tapasah) - of penance; अन्ते (ante) - at the end; महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - having great penance; शङ्करः (śaṅkaraḥ) - Śaṅkara; त्व् (tv) - but; असृजत् (asṛjat) - created; तात (tāta) - O dear one; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - creatures; स्थावरजङ्गमाः (sthāvarajaṅgamāḥ) - immobile and mobile;]
(Lord of creatures that created at the end of penance, having great penance. Śaṅkara but created, O dear one, creatures, immobile and mobile. (13-145-5))
At the end of his penance, Prajāpati, possessed of great austerity, created that (the world). But, O dear one, Śaṅkara created both immobile and mobile beings. (13-145-5)
नास्ति किञ्चित्परं भूतं महादेवाद्विशां पते। इह त्रिष्वपि लोकेषु भूतानां प्रभवो हि सः ॥१३-१४५-६॥
nāsti kiñcit paraṁ bhūtaṁ mahādevād viśāṁ pate। iha triṣv api lokeṣu bhūtānāṁ prabhavo hi saḥ ॥13-145-6॥
[नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; परम् (param) - higher; भूतम् (bhūtaṁ) - being; महादेवात् (mahādevāt) - than Mahadeva; विशां (viśām) - of men; पते (pate) - O Lord; इह (iha) - here; त्रिषु अपि (triṣu api) - in three also; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - in worlds; भूतानाम् (bhūtānām) - of beings; प्रभवः (prabhavaḥ) - origin; हि (hi) - indeed; सः (saḥ) - he;]
(There is not anything higher being than Mahadeva, O Lord of men; here in the three worlds also, of beings, origin indeed he is.)
There is nothing whatsoever higher than Mahadeva, O Lord of men; here, in all the three worlds, he alone is truly the origin of all beings. (13-145-6)
न चैवोत्सहते स्थातुं कश्चिदग्रे महात्मनः। न हि भूतं समं तेन त्रिषु लोकेषु विद्यते ॥१३-१४५-७॥
na caivotṣahate sthātuṃ kaścid agre mahātmanaḥ. na hi bhūtaṃ samaṃ tena triṣu lokeṣu vidyate ॥13-145-7॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; उत्सहते (utṣahate) - is able; स्थातुं (sthātuṃ) - to stand; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; अग्रे (agre) - in front; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled one; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; भूतं (bhūtaṃ) - being; समं (samaṃ) - equal; तेन (tena) - with him; त्रिषु (triṣu) - in the three; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - worlds; विद्यते (vidyate) - is found;]
(Not and indeed is able to stand anyone in front of the great-souled one. Not indeed being equal with him in the three worlds is found.)
Nor indeed can anyone stand before the great-souled one. Truly, an equal to him is not found in the three worlds. (13-145-7)
गन्धेनापि हि सङ्ग्रामे तस्य क्रुद्धस्य शत्रवः। विसञ्ज्ञा हतभूयिष्ठा वेपन्ति च पतन्ति च ॥१३-१४५-८॥
gandhenāpi hi saṅgrāme tasya kruddhasya śatravaḥ. visañjñā hatabhūyiṣṭhā vepanti ca patanti ca ॥13-145-8॥
[गन्धेनापि (gandhena api) - by the scent; even; हि (hi) - indeed; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; तस्य (tasya) - of him; क्रुद्धस्य (kruddhasya) - of the enraged (one); शत्रवः (śatravaḥ) - enemies; विसञ्ज्ञा (visañjñā) - unconscious; हतभूयिष्ठा (hatabhūyiṣṭhā) - mostly slain; वेपन्ति (vepanti) - they tremble; च (ca) - and; पतन्ति (patanti) - they fall; च (ca) - and;]
(Indeed, even by the scent, in battle, of him, of the enraged one, the enemies, unconscious, mostly slain, they tremble and fall and.)
Indeed, even by his scent alone in battle, the enemies—made unconscious and mostly slain by his fury—tremble and fall. (13-145-8)
घोरं च निनदं तस्य पर्जन्यनिनदोपमम्। श्रुत्वा विदीर्येद्धृदयं देवानामपि संयुगे ॥१३-१४५-९॥
ghoraṃ ca ninadaṃ tasya parjanya-ninada-upamam। śrutvā vidīryet dhṛdayaṃ devānām api saṃyuge ॥13-145-9॥
[घोरं (ghoram) - terrible; च (ca) - and; निनदं (ninadam) - roar; तस्य (tasya) - his; पर्जन्यनिनदोपमम् (parjanya-ninada-upamam) - like the roar of thunder; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; विदीर्येत् (vidīryet) - would burst; हृदयं (hṛdayam) - heart; देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; अपि (api) - even; संयुगे (saṃyuge) - in battle;]
(Terrible and roar his like the roar of thunder; having heard, would burst heart of the gods even in battle.)
His terrible roar, like the roar of thunder, even hearing it in battle, would burst the hearts of the gods. (13-145-9)
यांश्च घोरेण रूपेण पश्येत्क्रुद्धः पिनाकधृक्। न सुरा नासुरा लोके न गन्धर्वा न पन्नगाः ॥ कुपिते सुखमेधन्ते तस्मिन्नपि गुहागताः ॥१३-१४५-१०॥
yāṁś ca ghoreṇa rūpeṇa paśyet kruddhaḥ pinākadhṛk। na surā nāsurā loke na gandharvā na pannagāḥ ॥ kupite sukhamedhante tasminn api guhāgatāḥ ॥13-145-10॥
[यांश्च (yāṁś ca) - whom and; घोरेण (ghoreṇa) - with a terrible; रूपेण (rūpeṇa) - form; पश्येत् (paśyet) - may see; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angry; पिनाकधृक् (pinākadhṛk) - the wielder of Pināka (Śiva); न (na) - not; सुरा (surā) - gods; नासुरा (na asurā) - nor demons; लोके (loke) - in the world; न (na) - not; गन्धर्वा (gandharvāḥ) - Gandharvas; न (na) - not; पन्नगाः (pannagāḥ) - serpents; कुपिते (kupite) - when enraged; सुखमेधन्ते (sukham edhante) - enjoy happiness; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in him; अपि (api) - even; गुहागताः (guhāgatāḥ) - those dwelling in caves;]
(Whom and with a terrible form may see angry wielder of Pināka; not gods nor demons in the world, not Gandharvas, not serpents. When enraged, enjoy happiness in him even those dwelling in caves.)
No gods, demons, Gandharvas, or serpents in the world—even those who dwell in caves—are happy when the angry wielder of Pināka (Śiva) is seen in his terrible form. (13-145-10)
प्रजापतेश्च दक्षस्य यजतो वितते क्रतौ। विव्याध कुपितो यज्ञं निर्भयस्तु भवस्तदा ॥ धनुषा बाणमुत्सृज्य सघोषं विननाद च ॥१३-१४५-११॥
prajāpateś ca dakṣasya yajato vitate kratau। vivyādha kupito yajñaṃ nirbhayas tu bhavas tadā॥ dhanuṣā bāṇam utsṛjya saghoṣaṃ vinanāda ca॥13-145-11॥
[प्रजापतेः (prajāpateḥ) - of the lord of creatures; च (ca) - and; दक्षस्य (dakṣasya) - of Dakṣa; यजतः (yajataḥ) - of the one performing the sacrifice; वितते (vitate) - spread (extended, being conducted); क्रतौ (kratau) - in the sacrifice; विव्याध (vivyādha) - he pierced; कुपितः (kupitaḥ) - angry; यज्ञम् (yajñam) - the sacrifice; निर्भयः (nirbhayaḥ) - fearless; तु (tu) - but; भवः (bhavaḥ) - Bhava (Śiva); तदा (tadā) - then; धनुषा (dhanuṣā) - with bow; बाणम् (bāṇam) - arrow; उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - having discharged; सघोषम् (saghoṣam) - with a loud sound; विननाद (vinanāda) - he roared; च (ca) - and;]
(Of the lord of creatures and of Dakṣa, of the one performing the sacrifice, in the spread sacrifice, angry, he pierced the sacrifice; fearless but Bhava then, with the bow, having discharged an arrow, with a loud sound, he roared and.)
Then Bhava (Śiva), angry and fearless, pierced the sacrifice of Dakṣa, the lord of creatures, as it was being performed. Having discharged an arrow from his bow with a resounding noise, he also gave a great roar. (13-145-11)
ते न शर्म कुतः शान्तिं विषादं लेभिरे सुराः। विद्रुते सहसा यज्ञे कुपिते च महेश्वरे ॥१३-१४५-१२॥
te na śarma kutaḥ śāntiṃ viṣādaṃ lebhire surāḥ। vidrute sahasā yajñe kupite ca maheśvare॥13-145-12॥
[ते (te) - they; न (na) - not; शर्म (śarma) - happiness; कुतः (kutaḥ) - from where; शान्तिं (śāntiṃ) - peace; विषादं (viṣādam) - despair; लेभिरे (lebhire) - obtained; सुराः (surāḥ) - the gods; विद्रुते (vidrute) - when scattered; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; यज्ञे (yajñe) - in the sacrifice; कुपिते (kupite) - being angry; च (ca) - and; महेश्वरे (maheśvare) - Maheshvara;]
(They not happiness from where peace despair did obtain the gods; when scattered suddenly in the sacrifice, and Maheshvara being angry.)
The gods did not attain happiness, peace, or freedom from despair; when the sacrifice suddenly fell into disorder and Maheshvara became angry. (13-145-12)
तेन ज्यातलघोषेण सर्वे लोकाः समाकुलाः। बभूवुरवशाः पार्थ विषेदुश्च सुरासुराः ॥१३-१४५-१३॥
tena jyāta-laghoṣeṇa sarve lokāḥ samākulāḥ। babhūvur avaśāḥ pārtha viṣeduś ca surāsurāḥ॥13-145-13॥
[तेन (tena) - by that; ज्यातलघोषेण (jyāta-laghoṣeṇa) - with the twang of the bow-string; सर्वे (sarve) - all; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; समाकुलाः (samākulāḥ) - agitated; बभूवुः (babhūvuḥ) - became; अवशाः (avaśāḥ) - helpless; पार्थ (pārtha) - O Pārtha; विषेदुः (viṣeduḥ) - were distressed; च (ca) - and; सुरासुराः (surāsurāḥ) - the gods and the asuras;]
(By that twang of the bow-string, all the worlds became agitated, O Pārtha, became helpless and the gods and the asuras were distressed.)
O Pārtha, by that twang of the bow-string, all the worlds were agitated and became helpless; the gods and asuras alike were distressed. (13-145-13)
आपश्चुक्षुभिरे चैव चकम्पे च वसुन्धरा। व्यद्रवन्गिरयश्चापि द्यौः पफाल च सर्वशः ॥१३-१४५-१४॥
āpaś cukṣubhire caiva cakampe ca vasuṃdharā। vyadravan girayaś cāpi dyauḥ paphāla ca sarvaśaḥ ॥13-145-14॥
[आपः (āpaḥ) - waters; चुक्षुभिरे (cukṣubhire) - became agitated; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; चकम्पे (cakampe) - trembled; च (ca) - and; वसुन्धरा (vasuṃdharā) - earth; व्यद्रवन् (vyadravan) - ran (flowed away); गिरयः (girayaḥ) - mountains; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; द्यौः (dyauḥ) - sky; पफाल (paphāla) - split asunder; च (ca) - and; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - completely;]
(Waters became agitated and indeed earth trembled and mountains ran (flowed away), and also sky split completely.)
The waters were agitated, the earth trembled, the mountains fled, and the sky split completely. (13-145-14)
अन्धेन तमसा लोकाः प्रावृता न चकाशिरे। प्रनष्टा ज्योतिषां भाश्च सह सूर्येण भारत ॥१३-१४५-१५॥
andhena tamasā lokāḥ prāvṛtā na cakāśire। pranaṣṭā jyotiṣāṃ bhāś ca saha sūryeṇa bhārata ॥13-145-15॥
[अन्धेन (andhena) - by blinding; तमसा (tamasā) - by darkness; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; प्रावृता (prāvṛtā) - covered; न (na) - not; चकाशिरे (cakāśire) - shone; प्रनष्टा (pranaṣṭā) - destroyed; ज्योतिषां (jyotiṣām) - of the lights; भाः (bhāḥ) - rays; च (ca) - and; सह (saha) - along with; सूर्येण (sūryeṇa) - with the sun; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(The worlds, covered by blinding darkness, did not shine. The rays of the lights, along with the sun, O Bhārata, were destroyed.)
O Bhārata, the worlds were enveloped in blinding darkness and did not shine; the rays of the luminaries, along with the sun, were destroyed. (13-145-15)
भृशं भीतास्ततः शान्तिं चक्रुः स्वस्त्ययनानि च। ऋषयः सर्वभूतानामात्मनश्च हितैषिणः ॥१३-१४५-१६॥
bhṛśaṁ bhītās tataḥ śāntiṁ cakruḥ svastyayanāni ca। ṛṣayaḥ sarvabhūtānām ātmanaś ca hitaiṣiṇaḥ॥13-145-16॥
[भृशं (bhṛśam) - exceedingly; very much; भीताः (bhītāḥ) - frightened; ततः (tataḥ) - then; शान्तिं (śāntim) - peace; tranquility; चक्रुः (cakruḥ) - performed; did; स्वस्त्ययनानि (svastyayanāni) - auspicious rites; ceremonies for well-being; च (ca) - and; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - the sages; सर्वभूतानाम् (sarvabhūtānām) - of all beings; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of themselves; of their own selves; च (ca) - and; हितैषिणः (hitaiṣiṇaḥ) - desirous of welfare; wishing for the good;]
(Exceedingly frightened then peace they performed, and auspicious rites; the sages, of all beings and of themselves, desirous of welfare.)
Then, exceedingly frightened, the sages, wishing for the welfare of all beings and themselves, performed rites of peace and well-being. (13-145-16)
ततः सोऽभ्यद्रवद्देवान्क्रुद्धो रौद्रपराक्रमः। भगस्य नयने क्रुद्धः प्रहारेण व्यशातयत् ॥१३-१४५-१७॥
tataḥ so’bhyadravaddevānkrodhro raudraparākramaḥ। bhagasya nayane kruddhaḥ prahāreṇa vyaśātayat ॥13-145-17॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सः (saḥ) - he; अभ्यद्रवत् (abhyadravat) - rushed towards; देवान् (devān) - the gods; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angry; रौद्रपराक्रमः (raudra-parākramaḥ) - possessing fierce valor; भगस्य (bhagasya) - of Bhaga; नयने (nayane) - eye; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angry; प्रहारेण (prahāreṇa) - with a blow; व्यशातयत् (vyaśātayat) - he destroyed;]
(Then he, angry, possessing fierce valor, rushed towards the gods. At Bhaga's eye, angry, with a blow, he destroyed.)
Then, possessed of fierce valor and anger, he rushed at the gods; angry, he struck out Bhaga's eye with a blow. (13-145-17)
पूषाणं चाभिदुद्राव परेण वपुषान्वितः। पुरोडाशं भक्षयतो दशनान्वै व्यशातयत् ॥१३-१४५-१८॥
pūṣāṇaṃ cābhidudrāva pareṇa vapuṣānvitaḥ। puroḍāśaṃ bhakṣayato daśanānvai vyaśātayat ॥13-145-18॥
[पूषाणम् (pūṣāṇam) - Puṣā (the god Puṣan, accusative); च (ca) - and; अभिदुद्राव (abhidudrāva) - he rushed towards; परेण (pareṇa) - with another; वपुषा (vapuṣā) - body; अन्वितः (anvitaḥ) - attained; पुरोडाशम् (puroḍāśam) - sacrificial cake (accusative); भक्षयतः (bhakṣayataḥ) - eating; दशनान् (daśanān) - teeth; वै (vai) - indeed; व्‍यशातयत् (vyaśātayat) - knocked out;]
(And (he) rushed towards Puṣan, having assumed another body; as (Puṣan) was eating the sacrificial cake, (he) indeed knocked out (his) teeth.)

ततः प्रणेमुर्देवास्ते वेपमानाः स्म शङ्करम्। पुनश्च संदधे रुद्रो दीप्तं सुनिशितं शरम् ॥१३-१४५-१९॥
tataḥ praṇemur devās te vepamānāḥ sma śaṅkaram। punaś ca sandadhe rudro dīptaṃ suniśitaṃ śaram ॥13-145-19॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रणेमुः (praṇemuḥ) - bowed down; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; ते (te) - they; वेपमानाः (vepamānāḥ) - trembling; स्म (sma) - truly; indeed; शङ्करम् (śaṅkaram) - to Śaṅkara; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; च (ca) - and; संदधे (sandadhe) - he fitted (an arrow); रुद्रः (rudraḥ) - Rudra; दीप्तम् (dīptam) - blazing; सुनिशितम् (suniśitam) - very sharp; शरम् (śaram) - arrow;]
(Then the gods, they bowed down, trembling, indeed, to Śaṅkara. Again and, Rudra fitted a blazing, very sharp arrow.)

रुद्रस्य विक्रमं दृष्ट्वा भीता देवाः सहर्षिभिः। ततः प्रसादयामासुः शर्वं ते विबुधोत्तमाः ॥१३-१४५-२०॥
rudrasya vikramaṃ dṛṣṭvā bhītā devāḥ saharṣibhiḥ. tataḥ prasādayāmāsuḥ śarvaṃ te vibudhottamāḥ ॥13-145-20॥

(Having seen the prowess of Rudra, the gods, frightened, together with the sages, then they began to appease Śarva, those best among the wise.)

जेपुश्च शतरुद्रीयं देवाः कृत्वाञ्जलिं ततः। संस्तूयमानस्त्रिदशैः प्रससाद महेश्वरः ॥१३-१४५-२१॥
jepuś ca śatarudrīyaṁ devāḥ kṛtvāñjaliṁ tataḥ। saṁstūyamānas tridaśaiḥ prasasāda maheśvaraḥ ॥13-145-21॥

(Having repeated the Śatarudrīya, and the gods having made the gesture of reverence, then Maheshvara, being praised by the thirty-three gods, became pleased.)
After the gods recited the Śatarudrīya and made reverent gestures, Maheshvara, praised by the thirty-three gods, became pleased. (13-145-21)
रुद्रस्य भागं यज्ञे च विशिष्टं ते त्वकल्पयन्। भयेन त्रिदशा राजञ्शरणं च प्रपेदिरे ॥१३-१४५-२२॥
rudrasya bhāgaṁ yajñe ca viśiṣṭaṁ te tvakalpayan। bhayena tridaśā rājañśaraṇaṁ ca prapedire ॥13-145-22॥

तेन चैवातिकोपेन स यज्ञः सन्धितोऽभवत्। यद्यच्चापि हतं तत्र तत्तथैव प्रदीयते ॥१३-१४५-२३॥
tena caivaatikopena sa yajñaḥ sandhito'bhavat। yadyaccāpi hataṃ tatra tattathaiva pradīyate ॥13-145-23॥

(By that indeed excessive wrath, that sacrifice was concluded. And whatever also is slain there, that likewise is given.)
Thus, due to that excessive anger, the sacrifice was concluded. And whatever is killed there is offered in the same way. (13-145-23)
असुराणां पुराण्यासंस्त्रीणि वीर्यवतां दिवि। आयसं राजतं चैव सौवर्णमपरं तथा ॥१३-१४५-२४॥
asurāṇāṃ purāṇy āsaṃs trīṇi vīryavatāṃ divi। āyasaṃ rājataṃ caiva sauvarṇam aparaṃ tathā॥13-145-24॥
[असुराणां (asurāṇām) - of the asuras; पुराणि (purāṇi) - ancient ones; आसन् (āsan) - were; त्रीणि (trīṇi) - three; वीर्यवताम् (vīryavatām) - of the powerful (ones); दिवि (divi) - in heaven; आयसं (āyasaṃ) - iron; राजतम् (rājataṃ) - silver; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सौवर्णम् (sauvarṇam) - gold; अपरम् (aparam) - another; तथा (tathā) - likewise;]
(Of the asuras, ancient were three (cities) of the powerful in heaven: iron, silver indeed, and another likewise (of) gold.)

नाशकत्तानि मघवा भेत्तुं सर्वायुधैरपि। अथ सर्वेऽमरा रुद्रं जग्मुः शरणमर्दिताः ॥१३-१४५-२५॥

(Not able to be destroyed, Maghavan to break with all weapons even. Then all immortals Rudra to went for refuge, afflicted.)
Maghavan (Indra) was not able to break (it) even with all weapons. Then all the immortals, afflicted, went to Rudra for refuge. (13-145-25)
तत ऊचुर्महात्मानो देवाः सर्वे समागताः। रुद्र रौद्रा भविष्यन्ति पशवः सर्वकर्मसु ॥ जहि दैत्यान्सह पुरैर्लोकांस्त्रायस्व मानद ॥१३-१४५-२६॥
tat ūcur mahātmānaḥ devāḥ sarve samāgatāḥ। rudra raudrā bhaviṣyanti paśavaḥ sarvakarmasu॥ jahi daityān saha puraiḥ lokān trāyasva mānada॥13-145-26॥
[तत (tat) - that; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - they said; महात्मानः (mahātmānaḥ) - great-souled ones; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; सर्वे (sarve) - all; समागताः (samāgatāḥ) - assembled; रुद्र (rudra) - Rudra; रौद्राः (raudrāḥ) - those of Rudra-nature; भविष्यन्ति (bhaviṣyanti) - will become; पशवः (paśavaḥ) - beings; सर्वकर्मसु (sarvakarmasu) - in all acts; जहि (jahi) - slay; दैत्याञ् (daityān) - demons; सह (saha) - together with; पुरैः (puraiḥ) - forts; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; त्रायस्व (trāyasva) - protect; मानद (mānada) - O bestower of honor;]
(That they said great-souled ones gods all assembled. Rudra, Rudra-natured will become beings in all acts. Slay demons together with forts, worlds protect, O bestower of honor.)
Thus all the assembled gods of great soul said: 'O Rudra, beings will become of Rudra-nature in all actions. Slay the demons together with their forts and protect the worlds, O bestower of honor.' (13-145-26)
स तथोक्तस्तथेत्युक्त्वा विष्णुं कृत्वा शरोत्तमम्। शल्यमग्निं तथा कृत्वा पुङ्खं वैवस्वतं यमम् ॥ वेदान्कृत्वा धनुः सर्वाञ्ज्यां च सावित्रिमुत्तमाम् ॥१३-१४५-२७॥
sa tathoktas tathety uktvā viṣṇuṃ kṛtvā śarottamam। śalyam agniṃ tathā kṛtvā puṅkhaṃ vaivasvataṃ yamam॥ vedān kṛtvā dhanuḥ sarvāñ jyāṃ ca sāvitriṃ uttamām॥13-145-27॥

(He, thus instructed, saying 'so be it', making Viṣṇu the supreme arrow, the arrowhead (as) Agni, likewise making the feathered end (as) Vaivasvata Yama, making the Vedas (as) the bow, and the bowstring (as) the best Sāvitrī.)
Thus instructed, he said 'so be it', and fashioned Viṣṇu as the supreme arrow, Agni as the arrowhead, Vaivasvata Yama as the feathered end, the Vedas as the bow, and the excellent Sāvitrī as the bowstring. (13-145-27)
देवान्रथवरं कृत्वा विनियुज्य च सर्वशः। त्रिपर्वणा त्रिशल्येन तेन तानि बिभेद सः ॥१३-१४५-२८॥
devān ratha-varaṃ kṛtvā viniyujya ca sarvaśaḥ। triparvaṇā triśalyena tena tāni bibheda saḥ॥13-145-28॥
[देवान् (devān) - the gods; रथवरम् (ratha-varam) - the best chariot; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; विनियुज्य (viniyujya) - having employed; च (ca) - and; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - in every way; त्रिपर्वणा (triparvaṇā) - three-jointed; त्रिशल्येन (triśalyena) - with three-pointed (arrow); तेन (tena) - with that; तानि (tāni) - those; बिभेद (bibheda) - he pierced; सः (saḥ) - he;]
(Having made the gods the best chariot, having employed (them) and in every way, with the three-jointed, three-pointed (arrow), with that, those he pierced; he.)
He, having made the gods his best chariot and employing them in all ways, pierced those (enemies) with that three-jointed, three-pointed arrow. (13-145-28)
शरेणादित्यवर्णेन कालाग्निसमतेजसा। तेऽसुराः सपुरास्तत्र दग्धा रुद्रेण भारत ॥१३-१४५-२९॥
śareṇādityavarṇena kālāgnisamatejasā। te'surāḥ sapurās tatra dagdhā rudreṇa bhārata ॥13-145-29॥
[शरेण (śareṇa) - by the arrow; आदित्यवर्णेन (ādityavarṇena) - of solar radiance; कालाग्निसमतेजसा (kālāgni-samatejasā) - equal in brilliance to the fire of dissolution; ते (te) - they; असुराः (asurāḥ) - demons; सपुराः (sa-purāḥ) - with their cities; तत्र (tatra) - there; दग्धाः (dagdhāḥ) - were burned; रुद्रेण (rudreṇa) - by Rudra; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(By the arrow of solar radiance, equal in brilliance to the fire of dissolution, they—the demons with their cities—there were burned by Rudra, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, by Rudra’s arrow, shining like the sun and blazing with the power of the fire of dissolution, those demons along with their cities were burned there. (13-145-29)
तं चैवाङ्कगतं दृष्ट्वा बालं पञ्चशिखं पुनः। उमा जिज्ञासमाना वै कोऽयमित्यब्रवीत्तदा ॥१३-१४५-३०॥
taṃ caivaāṅkagataṃ dṛṣṭvā bālaṃ pañcaśikhaṃ punaḥ। umā jijñāsamānā vai ko'yam ity abravīt tadā॥13-145-30॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; अङ्कगतं (aṅkagataṃ) - seated on (the) lap; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; बालं (bālaṃ) - child; पञ्चशिखं (pañcaśikhaṃ) - with five tufts (of hair); पुनः (punaḥ) - again; उमा (umā) - Umā; जिज्ञासमाना (jijñāsamānā) - desiring to know; वै (vai) - indeed; कः (kaḥ) - who; अयम् (ayam) - this; इति (iti) - thus; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Him and indeed seated on (the) lap having seen, the child with five tufts (of hair), again Umā desiring to know indeed, "Who is this?" thus said then.)
And seeing the child with five tufts of hair seated on his lap, Umā, desiring to know, again said, "Who is this?" at that time. (13-145-30)
असूयतश्च शक्रस्य वज्रेण प्रहरिष्यतः। सवज्रं स्तम्भयामास तं बाहुं परिघोपमम् ॥१३-१४५-३१॥
asūyataś ca śakrasya vajreṇa prahariṣyataḥ. sa-vajraṃ stambhayām āsa taṃ bāhuṃ parighopamam ॥13-145-31॥
[असूयतः (asūyataḥ) - being envious; च (ca) - and; शक्रस्य (śakrasya) - of Śakra; वज्रेण (vajreṇa) - with the thunderbolt; प्रहरिष्यतः (pra-hariṣyataḥ) - about to strike; सवज्रं (sa-vajram) - with the thunderbolt; स्तम्भयाम् (stambhayām) - caused to be stopped; आस (āsa) - he (or she) made; तं (tam) - that; बाहुं (bāhuṃ) - arm; परिघोपमम् (parighopamam) - like an iron club;]
(And being envious, of Śakra, with the thunderbolt, about to strike; with the thunderbolt, caused to be stopped, that arm, like an iron club.)
And being envious as Śakra was about to strike with the thunderbolt, he caused that arm—grasping the thunderbolt and resembling an iron club—to be paralyzed. (13-145-31)
न सम्बुबुधिरे चैनं देवास्तं भुवनेश्वरम्। सप्रजापतयः सर्वे तस्मिन्मुमुहुरीश्वरे ॥१३-१४५-३२॥
na sambubudhire cai naṃ devās taṃ bhuvaneśvaram. sa-prajāpatayaḥ sarve tasmin mumuhur īśvare ॥13-145-32॥
[न (na) - not; सम्बुबुधिरे (sambubudhire) - recognized; understood; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - him; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; तम् (tam) - him; भुवनेश्वरम् (bhuvaneśvaram) - lord of the worlds; सप्रजापतयः (sa-prajāpatayaḥ) - along with the prajāpatis; सर्वे (sarve) - all; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that (one); मुमुहुः (mumuhuḥ) - were bewildered; became confused; ईश्वरे (īśvare) - in the Lord;]

ततो ध्यात्वाथ भगवान्ब्रह्मा तममितौजसम्। अयं श्रेष्ठ इति ज्ञात्वा ववन्दे तमुमापतिम् ॥१३-१४५-३३॥
tato dhyātvātha bhagavān brahmā tam amitaujasaṃ। ayaṃ śreṣṭha iti jñātvā vavande tam umāpatim॥13-145-33॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ध्यात्वा (dhyātvā) - having meditated; अथ (atha) - then; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the venerable; ब्रह्मा (brahmā) - Brahmā; तम् (tam) - him; अमितौजसम् (amitaujasaṃ) - of immeasurable energy; अयं (ayaṃ) - this one; श्रेष्ठः (śreṣṭhaḥ) - the best; इति (iti) - thus; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - having known; ववन्दे (vavande) - he saluted; तम् (tam) - him; उमापतिम् (umāpatiṃ) - Umāpati;]
(Then, having meditated, then the venerable Brahmā, him of immeasurable energy, "this is the best" — having known thus, he saluted him, Umāpati.)
Then the venerable Brahmā, after meditating on him of immeasurable energy and recognizing "this one is the best," saluted Umāpati. (13-145-33)
ततः प्रसादयामासुरुमां रुद्रं च ते सुराः। बभूव स तदा बाहुर्बलहन्तुर्यथा पुरा ॥१३-१४५-३४॥
tataḥ prasādayāmāsur umāṃ rudraṃ ca te surāḥ। babhūva sa tadā bāhur balahantur yathā purā॥13-145-34॥

(Then those gods sought to propitiate Umā and Rudra. He then became the arm of the slayer of strength as formerly.)
Then those gods propitiated Umā and Rudra, and he again became the arm of the slayer of strength, just as before. (13-145-34)
स चापि ब्राह्मणो भूत्वा दुर्वासा नाम वीर्यवान्। द्वारवत्यां मम गृहे चिरं कालमुपावसत् ॥१३-१४५-३५॥
sa cāpi brāhmaṇo bhūtvā durvāsā nāma vīryavān। dvāravatyāṃ mama gṛhe ciraṃ kālam upāvasat॥13-145-35॥
[स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - the brāhmaṇa; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; दुर्वासा (durvāsā) - Durvāsā; नाम (nāma) - by name; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - powerful; द्वारवत्याम् (dvāravatyām) - in Dvāravatī; मम (mama) - in my; गृहे (gṛhe) - house; चिरम् (ciram) - for a long; कालम् (kālam) - time; उपावसत् (upāvasat) - resided;]
(He and also the brāhmaṇa, having become Durvāsā by name, powerful, in Dvāravatī, in my house, for a long time resided.)
And he, having assumed the form of a powerful brāhmaṇa named Durvāsā, resided for a long time in my house at Dvāravatī. (13-145-35)
विप्रकारान्प्रयुङ्क्ते स्म सुबहून्मम वेश्मनि। तानुदारतया चाहमक्षमं तस्य दुःसहम् ॥१३-१४५-३६॥
viprakārān prayuṅkte sma subahūn mama veśmani। tān udāratayā ca aham akṣamam tasya duḥsaham ॥13-145-36॥
[विप्रकारान् (viprakārān) - hostilities; प्रयुङ्क्ते (prayuṅkte) - deploys; स्म (sma) - indeed; सुबहून् (subahūn) - very many; मम (mama) - of my; वेश्मनि (veśmani) - house; तान् (tān) - those; उदारतया (udāratayā) - out of generosity; च (ca) - and; अहम् (aham) - I; अक्षमम् (akṣamam) - endured; तस्य (tasya) - of him; दुःसहम् (duḥsaham) - (the) intolerable;]
(Indeed, he deploys very many hostilities in my house. Those, out of generosity, I endured the intolerable of him.)

(He is the lord of the gods and the wind and he (is) the two Aśvins; he and lightning; he (is) the moon, he and the lord, he (is) the sun, Varuṇa and he.)
He is Indra, the wind, the Aśvin twins, lightning, the moon, the lord, the sun, and Varuṇa. (13-145-37)
स कालः सोऽन्तको मृत्युः स तमो रात्र्यहानि च। मासार्धमासा ऋतवः सन्ध्ये संवत्सरश्च सः ॥१३-१४५-३८॥
sa kālaḥ so'ntako mṛtyuḥ sa tamo rātryahāni ca। māsārdhamāsā ṛtavaḥ sandhye saṃvatsaraś ca saḥ॥13-145-38॥

[स (sa) - he; धाता (dhātā) - sustainer; स (sa) - he; विधाता (vidhātā) - creator; च (ca) - and; विश्वकर्मा (viśvakarmā) - universal-creator; स (sa) - he; सर्ववित् (sarvavit) - knower-of-all; नक्षत्राणि (nakṣatrāṇi) - stars; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; प्रदिशः (pradiśaḥ) - sub-directions; अथ (atha) - and; ग्रहाः (grahāḥ) - planets; तथा (tathā) - likewise; विश्वमूर्ति (viśvamūrtiḥ) - whose form is the universe; अमेयात्मा (ameyātmā) - of immeasurable self; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the glorious one; अमितद्युतिः (amitadyutiḥ) - of infinite radiance;]
(He sustainer, he creator and universal-creator, he knower-of-all; stars, directions indeed, sub-directions, and planets likewise. Whose form is the universe, of immeasurable self, the glorious one, of infinite radiance. (13-145-39))
He is the sustainer, the creator, the maker of all, the knower of all; he is the stars, the directions, the sub-directions, and also the planets. He whose form is the universe, whose self is immeasurable, the glorious one of infinite radiance. (13-145-39)
एकधा च द्विधा चैव बहुधा च स एव च। शतधा सहस्रधा चैव तथा शतसहस्रधा ॥१३-१४५-४०॥
ekadhā ca dvidhā caiva bahudhā ca sa eva ca। śatadhā sahasradhā caiva tathā śatasahasradhā ॥13-145-40॥
[एकधा (ekadhā) - in one way; च (ca) - and; द्विधा (dvidhā) - in two ways; चैव (caiva) - and indeed; बहुधा (bahudhā) - in many ways; च (ca) - and; स (sa) - he; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; शतधा (śatadhā) - in a hundred ways; सहस्रधा (sahasradhā) - in a thousand ways; चैव (caiva) - and indeed; तथा (tathā) - and so; शतसहस्रधा (śatasahasradhā) - in a hundred thousand ways;]
(In one way and in two ways and indeed in many ways and he indeed and in a hundred ways, in a thousand ways and indeed and so in a hundred thousand ways.)
He is in one form, in two forms, in many forms, and he alone, in a hundred forms, in a thousand forms, and in a hundred thousand forms as well. (13-145-40)
ईदृशः स महादेवो भूयश्च भगवानतः। न हि शक्या गुणा वक्तुमपि वर्षशतैरपि ॥१३-१४५-४१॥
īdṛśaḥ sa mahādevo bhūyaś ca bhagavān ataḥ। na hi śakyā guṇā vaktum api varṣaśatair api ॥13-145-41॥
[ईदृशः (īdṛśaḥ) - such as this; such; thus; स (sa) - he; महादेवः (mahādevaḥ) - Mahādeva; the great god; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - further; moreover; again; च (ca) - and; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the venerable one; the fortunate one; the lord; अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; hence; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; शक्या (śakyā) - possible; गुणाः (guṇāḥ) - qualities; virtues; वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to speak; to tell; अपि (api) - even; also; वर्षशतैः (varṣaśataiḥ) - with hundreds of years; अपि (api) - even; also;]
(Such as this he Mahādeva further and lord therefore; not indeed possible qualities to speak even with hundreds of years even.)
Such is Mahādeva, moreover the lord; therefore, truly, it is not possible to describe even his qualities, even in hundreds of years. (13-145-41)
