युधिष्ठिर महाबाहो महाभाग्यं महात्मनः। रुद्राय बहुरूपाय बहुनाम्ने निबोध मे ॥१३-१४६-१॥
yudhiṣṭhira mahābāho mahābhāgyaṃ mahātmanaḥ। rudrāya bahurūpāya bahunāmne nibodha me ॥13-146-1॥

वदन्त्यग्निं महादेवं तथा स्थाणुं महेश्वरम्। एकाक्षं त्र्यम्बकं चैव विश्वरूपं शिवं तथा ॥१३-१४६-२॥
vadanty agniṃ mahādevaṃ tathā sthāṇuṃ maheśvaram। ekākṣaṃ tryambakaṃ caiva viśvarūpaṃ śivaṃ tathā ॥13-146-2॥

The knowers of the Veda, the Brāhmaṇas, know two forms of that god: one is terrible, another is auspicious; those forms again (manifest) in many ways. (13-146-3)
उग्रा घोरा तनूर्यास्य सोऽग्निर्विद्युत्स भास्करः। शिवा सौम्या च या तस्य धर्मस्त्वापोऽथ चन्द्रमाः ॥१३-१४६-४॥
ugrā ghorā tanūryāsya so'gnirvidyutsa bhāskaraḥ। śivā saumyā ca yā tasya dharmastvāpo'tha candramāḥ॥13-146-4॥
[उग्रा (ugrā) - fierce; घोरा (ghorā) - terrible; तनुः (tanuḥ) - form; या (yā) - which; स्य (sya) - his; सः (saḥ) - he; अग्निः (agniḥ) - Agni; विद्युत्स (vidyutsa) - as lightning; भास्करः (bhāskaraḥ) - as the sun; शिवा (śivā) - benign; सौम्या (saumyā) - gentle; च (ca) - and; या (yā) - which; तस्य (tasya) - of him; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - law; त्व् (tv) - verily; आपः (āpaḥ) - waters; अथ (atha) - and then; चन्द्रमाः (candramāḥ) - the moon;]
(Fierce, terrible is the form which is his; he is Agni, as lightning, as the sun. Auspicious, gentle too is she, which of him the law indeed, waters and then the moon.)

आत्मनोऽर्धं तु तस्याग्निरुच्यते भरतर्षभ। ब्रह्मचर्यं चरत्येष शिवा यास्य तनुस्तथा ॥१३-१४६-५॥
ātmano'rdhaṁ tu tasyāgnir ucyate bharatarṣabha. brahmacaryaṁ caraty eṣa śivā yāsya tanus tathā ॥13-146-5॥
[आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of (his) self; अर्धम् (ardham) - half; तु (tu) - but; तस्य (tasya) - his; अग्निः (agniḥ) - Agni; (the fire; the fire-god;) उच्यते (ucyate) - is said; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas; ब्रह्मचर्यम् (brahmacaryam) - celibacy; चरति (carati) - practices; एष (eṣa) - this; शिवा (śivā) - Śivā; (the auspicious one;) यास्य (yāsya) - of whom; तनुः (tanuḥ) - body; तथा (tathā) - in the same way;]
(Of his self, half, but, his, Agni, is said, O bull among the Bharatas; celibacy, practices, this, Śivā, of whom, body, in the same way.)

यास्य घोरतमा मूर्तिर्जगत्संहरते तया। ईश्वरत्वान्महत्त्वाच्च महेश्वर इति स्मृतः ॥१३-१४६-६॥
yāsya ghoratamā mūrtir jagat-saṁharate tayā। īśvaratvān-mahattvācca maheśvara iti smṛtaḥ ॥13-146-6॥

(Of whom the most terrible form destroys the world by her; from being lord and greatness and, the Great Lord thus is called.)
He whose most terrible form destroys the world by her is called the Great Lord because of his lordship and greatness. (13-146-6)
यन्निर्दहति यत्तीक्ष्णो यदुग्रो यत्प्रतापवान्। मांसशोणितमज्जादो यत्ततो रुद्र उच्यते ॥१३-१४६-७॥
yannirdahati yattīkṣṇo yadugro yatpratāpavān। māṃsaśoṇitamajjādo yattato rudra ucyate ॥13-146-7॥
[यत् (yat) - which; निर्दहति (nirdahati) - burns completely; यत् (yat) - which; तीक्ष्णः (tīkṣṇaḥ) - sharp; यत् (yat) - which; उग्रः (ugraḥ) - fierce; यत् (yat) - which; प्रतापवान् (pratāpavān) - powerful; मांसशोणितमज्जादः (māṃsaśoṇitamajjādaḥ) - eater of flesh, blood, and marrow; यत् (yat) - which; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; रुद्रः (rudraḥ) - Rudra; उच्यते (ucyate) - is called;]
(Which burns completely, which is sharp, which is fierce, which is powerful, which eats flesh, blood, and marrow—therefore, Rudra is called thus.)
That which burns, is sharp, fierce, powerful, and devours flesh, blood, and marrow; therefore, he is called Rudra. (13-146-7)
देवानां सुमहान्यच्च यच्चास्य विषयो महान्। यच्च विश्वं महत्पाति महादेवस्ततः स्मृतः ॥१३-१४६-८॥
devānāṃ sumahān yac ca yac cāsya viṣayo mahān। yac ca viśvaṃ mahat pāti mahādevas tataḥ smṛtaḥ॥13-146-8॥
[देवानां (devānām) - of the gods; सुमहान् (sumahān) - very great; यत् (yat) - that which; च (ca) - and; यत् (yat) - that which; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - his; विषयः (viṣayaḥ) - domain; महान् (mahān) - great; यत् (yat) - that which; च (ca) - and; विश्वम् (viśvam) - the universe; महत् (mahat) - great; पाति (pāti) - protects; महादेवः (mahādevaḥ) - Mahādeva; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; स्मृतः (smṛtaḥ) - is called;]
(Of the gods, very great is that which, and that which is his domain, great; and that which great universe Mahādeva protects, therefore he is called (so).)
Because among the gods, that which is very great, and his domain which is great, and because Mahādeva protects the great universe, therefore he is called so. (13-146-8)
समेधयति यन्नित्यं सर्वार्थान्सर्वकर्मभिः। शिवमिच्छन्मनुष्याणां तस्मादेष शिवः स्मृतः ॥१३-१४६-९॥
samēdhayati yan nityaṃ sarvārthān sarvakarmabhiḥ. śivam icchan manuṣyāṇāṃ tasmād eṣa śivaḥ smṛtaḥ ॥13-146-9॥
[समेधयति (samēdhayati) - causes to flourish; यत् (yat) - who; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; सर्वार्थान् (sarvārthān) - all aims; सर्वकर्मभिः (sarvakarmabhiḥ) - by all actions; शिवम् (śivam) - welfare; इच्छन् (icchan) - desiring; मनुष्याणाम् (manuṣyāṇām) - of men; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; एषः (eṣaḥ) - he; शिवः (śivaḥ) - Śiva; स्मृतः (smṛtaḥ) - is called;]
(He who always causes all aims to flourish by all actions, desiring the welfare of men, therefore, he is called Śiva.)
He who always furthers all purposes through every action and desires the welfare of men—therefore, he is called Śiva. (13-146-9)
दहत्यूर्ध्वं स्थितो यच्च प्राणोत्पत्तिः स्थितिश्च यत्। स्थिरलिङ्गश्च यन्नित्यं तस्मात्स्थाणुरिति स्मृतः ॥१३-१४६-१०॥
dahaty ūrdhvaṃ sthito yac ca prāṇotpattiḥ sthitiś ca yat | sthiraliṅgaś ca yan nityaṃ tasmāt sthāṇur iti smṛtaḥ ॥13-146-10॥
[दहत्यूर्ध्वं (dahaty ūrdhvaṃ) - burns upward; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - situated; यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; प्राणोत्पत्तिः (prāṇotpattiḥ) - origin of life-breath; स्थितिः (sthitiḥ) - existence; च (ca) - and; यत् (yat) - which; स्थिरलिङ्गः (sthiraliṅgaḥ) - one whose sign (liṅga) is stable; च (ca) - and; यन् (yan) - that [he]; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; स्थाणुः (sthāṇuḥ) - the fixed one; Sthāṇu; इति (iti) - thus; स्मृतः (smṛtaḥ) - is called;]
(Which burns upward, which is situated, which is origin of life-breath, and which is existence, and whose sign is always stable, therefore, he is thus called Sthāṇu.)
He who burns upward, who is ever situated, who is the origin and sustenance of life-breath, whose sign is ever stable—therefore, he is called 'Sthāṇu' (the Steadfast). (13-146-10)
यदस्य बहुधा रूपं भूतं भव्यं भवत्तथा। स्थावरं जङ्गमं चैव बहुरूपस्ततः स्मृतः ॥१३-१४६-११॥
yadasya bahudhā rūpaṃ bhūtaṃ bhavyaṃ bhavat tathā। sthāvaraṃ jaṅgamaṃ caiva bahurūpas tataḥ smṛtaḥ ॥13-146-11॥
[यत् (yat) - which; अस्य (asya) - of him (his); बहुधा (bahudhā) - in many ways; रूपं (rūpam) - form; भूतं (bhūtam) - what has become; भव्यम् (bhavyam) - what will become; भवत् (bhavat) - what is; तथा (tathā) - thus; स्थावरं (sthāvaram) - immobile; जङ्गमं (jaṅgamam) - mobile; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; बहुरूपः (bahurūpaḥ) - of many forms; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; स्मृतः (smṛtaḥ) - remembered;]
(Which of him in many ways forms, what has become, what will become, what is, thus; immobile, mobile, and indeed, of many forms, therefore, remembered.)
He, whose forms are many—which are what has been, what will be, and what is; encompassing both the immobile and the mobile—is therefore remembered as the one of many forms. (13-146-11)
धूम्रं रूपं च यत्तस्य धूर्जटीत्यत उच्यते। विश्वे देवाश्च यत्तस्मिन्विश्वरूपस्ततः स्मृतः ॥१३-१४६-१२॥
dhūmraṃ rūpaṃ ca yattasya dhūrjaṭītyata ucyate। viśve devāśca yattasminviśvarūpastataḥ smṛtaḥ ॥13-146-12॥
[धूम्रं (dhūmram) - smoky; misty; gray; of smoke; dark; रूपं (rūpam) - form; appearance; च (ca) - and; यत् (yat) - which; तस्य (tasya) - of him; his; धूर्जटी (dhūrjaṭī) - one with matted locks; Dhūrjaṭī (epithet of Śiva); इत्यत (ityata) - thus from; thus; उच्यते (ucyate) - is called; विश्वे (viśve) - all; universal; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; च (ca) - and; यत् (yat) - which; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in him; in that; विश्व रूपः (viśva rūpaḥ) - of all forms; universal form; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; hence; स्मृतः (smṛtaḥ) - is remembered; is called;]
(Smoky form and which of him, Dhūrjaṭī thus from is called. All gods and which in him, universal form therefore is remembered.)
He whose form is smoky, for that reason he is called Dhūrjaṭī. Since all the gods are present in him, he is called the Universal Form. (13-146-12)
सहस्राक्षोऽयुताक्षो वा सर्वतोक्षिमयोऽपि वा। चक्षुषः प्रभवस्तेजो नास्त्यन्तोऽथास्य चक्षुषाम् ॥१३-१४६-१३॥
sahasrākṣo' yutākṣo vā sarvatokṣimayo' pi vā। cakṣuṣaḥ prabhavas tejo nāsty anto 'thāsya cakṣuṣām ॥13-146-13॥
[सहस्राक्षः (sahasrākṣaḥ) - thousand-eyed; अयुताक्षः (ayutākṣaḥ) - ten-thousand-eyed; वा (vā) - or; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - from all sides; अक्षिमयः (akṣimayaḥ) - consisting of eyes; अपि (api) - also; वा (vā) - or; चक्षुषः (cakṣuṣaḥ) - of eyes; प्रभवः (prabhavaḥ) - source; तेजः (tejaḥ) - radiance; नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; अन्तः (antaḥ) - end; अथ (atha) - moreover; अस्य (asya) - of this; चक्षुषाम् (cakṣuṣām) - of eyes;]
(Thousand-eyed, ten-thousand-eyed, or even consisting of eyes on all sides; of the eyes, the source of radiance—there is no end, moreover, of this (being's) eyes.)
He is thousand-eyed, ten-thousand-eyed, or even composed entirely of eyes on every side; there is no end to the radiance and source of his eyes. (13-146-13)
सर्वथा यत्पशून्पाति तैश्च यद्रमते पुनः। तेषामधिपतिर्यच्च तस्मात्पशुपतिः स्मृतः ॥१३-१४६-१४॥
sarvathā yatpaśūnpāti taiśca yadramate punaḥ। teṣāmadhipatiryacca tasmātpaśupatiḥ smṛtaḥ ॥13-146-14॥
[सर्वथा (sarvathā) - in every way; यत् (yat) - who; पशून् (paśūn) - creatures; पाति (pāti) - protects; तैः (taiḥ) - with those; च (ca) - and; यत् (yat) - who; रमते (ramate) - delights; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; अधिपतिः (adhipatiḥ) - lord; यत् (yat) - who; च (ca) - and; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; पशुपतिः (paśupatiḥ) - Paśupati (Lord of creatures); स्मृतः (smṛtaḥ) - is called;]
(In every way, who protects creatures, and with those, who delights again; of them, who is the lord and; therefore, Paśupati is called.)
He who in every way protects creatures, and again delights in them, who is their lord—therefore he is called "Paśupati" (Lord of creatures). (13-146-14)
नित्येन ब्रह्मचर्येण लिङ्गमस्य यदा स्थितम्। महयन्त्यस्य लोकाश्च महेश्वर इति स्मृतः ॥१३-१४६-१५॥
nityena brahmacaryeṇa liṅgam asya yadā sthitam। mahayanty asya lokāś ca maheśvara iti smṛtaḥ ॥13-146-15॥
[नित्येन (nityena) - by perpetual; ब्रह्मचर्येण (brahmacaryeṇa) - by brahmacarya; लिङ्गम् (liṅgam) - liṅga; अस्य (asya) - of him; यदा (yadā) - when; स्थितम् (sthitam) - remained; महयन्ति (mahayanti) - honor; अस्य (asya) - of him; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; च (ca) - and; महेश्वर (maheśvara) - Maheśvara; इति (iti) - thus; स्मृतः (smṛtaḥ) - he is called;]
(By perpetual brahmacarya, when the liṅga of him remained, the worlds and Maheśvara honor him; thus he is called.)
When the liṅga of him remains through perpetual brahmacarya, the worlds and Maheśvara honor him; therefore, he is called thus. (13-146-15)
विग्रहं पूजयेद्यो वै लिङ्गं वापि महात्मनः। लिङ्गं पूजयिता नित्यं महतीं श्रियमश्नुते ॥१३-१४६-१६॥
vigrahaṁ pūjayedyo vai liṅgaṁ vāpi mahātmanaḥ। liṅgaṁ pūjayitā nityaṁ mahatīṁ śriyam aśnute ॥13-146-16॥
[विग्रहं (vigrahaṁ) - form; पूजयेत् (pūjayet) - would worship; यः (yaḥ) - who; वै (vai) - indeed; लिङ्गं (liṅgaṁ) - liṅga (symbol); वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - also; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled; लिङ्गं (liṅgaṁ) - liṅga (symbol); पूजयिता (pūjayitā) - worshipper; नित्यं (nityaṁ) - always; महतीं (mahatīṁ) - great; श्रियम् (śriyam) - prosperity; अश्नुते (aśnute) - attains;]
(Who indeed would worship a form or also the liṅga of the great-souled, the one who always worships the liṅga attains great prosperity.)
Whoever worships either the form or the liṅga of the great-souled one, and always worships the liṅga, attains abundant prosperity. (13-146-16)
ऋषयश्चापि देवाश्च गन्धर्वाप्सरसस्तथा। लिङ्गमेवार्चयन्ति स्म यत्तदूर्ध्वं समास्थितम् ॥१३-१४६-१७॥
ṛṣayaś cāpi devāś ca gandharvāpsarasas tathā। liṅgam evārcayanti sma yat tad ūrdhvaṃ samāsthitam ॥13-146-17॥
[ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - seers; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; च (ca) - and; गन्धर्व-अप्सरसः (gandharva-apsarasaḥ) - gandharvas and apsarases; तथा (tathā) - likewise; लिङ्गम् (liṅgam) - the (Śiva) liṅga; एव (eva) - verily; अर्चयन्ति (arcayanti) - worship; स्म (sma) - indeed (in the past); यत् (yat) - which; तत् (tat) - that; ऊर्ध्वम् (ūrdhvam) - upright; समास्थितम् (samāsthitam) - established;]
(Seers and also gods and likewise gandharvas and apsarases verily worshipped the liṅga which that upright established.)
Seers, gods, gandharvas, and apsarases similarly worshipped only the liṅga which was established upright. (13-146-17)
पूज्यमाने ततस्तस्मिन्मोदते स महेश्वरः। सुखं ददाति प्रीतात्मा भक्तानां भक्तवत्सलः ॥१३-१४६-१८॥
pūjyamāne tatas tasmin modate sa maheśvaraḥ। sukhaṃ dadāti prītātmā bhaktānāṃ bhaktavatsalaḥ ॥13-146-18॥
[पूज्यमाने (pūjyamāne) - being worshipped; ततः (tatas) - then; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in him; मोदते (modate) - rejoices; स (sa) - he; महेश्वरः (maheśvaraḥ) - the great lord; सुखं (sukhaṃ) - happiness; ददाति (dadāti) - gives; प्रीतात्मा (prītātmā) - with delighted mind; भक्तानां (bhaktānāṃ) - of devotees; भक्तवत्सलः (bhaktavatsalaḥ) - cherisher of devotees;]
(Being worshipped, then in him rejoices he, the great lord; happiness gives with delighted mind, of devotees, cherisher of devotees.)
When thus worshipped, the great lord becomes pleased and joyfully grants happiness to his devotees, being ever affectionate toward them. (13-146-18)
एष एव श्मशानेषु देवो वसति नित्यशः। यजन्ते तं जनास्तत्र वीरस्थाननिषेविणम् ॥१३-१४६-१९॥
eṣa eva śmaśāneṣu devo vasati nityaśaḥ। yajante taṃ janās tatra vīrasthānaniṣeviṇam ॥13-146-19॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; एव (eva) - indeed; श्मशानेषु (śmaśāneṣu) - in the cremation grounds; देवः (devaḥ) - god; वसति (vasati) - dwells; नित्यशः (nityaśaḥ) - always; यजन्ते (yajante) - worship; तम् (tam) - him; जनाः (janāḥ) - people; तत्र (tatra) - there; वीरस्थाननिषेविणम् (vīrasthānaniṣeviṇam) - one who frequents places of heroes (battlefields/cremation grounds);]
(This indeed in the cremation grounds god dwells always. People worship him there, the one who frequents the places of heroes.)
This very god always dwells in the cremation grounds. There, people worship him as the one who frequents the places of heroes. (13-146-19)
विषमस्थः शरीरेषु स मृत्युः प्राणिनामिह। स च वायुः शरीरेषु प्राणोऽपानः शरीरिणाम् ॥१३-१४६-२०॥
viṣamasthaḥ śarīreṣu sa mṛtyuḥ prāṇināmiha। sa ca vāyuḥ śarīreṣu prāṇo'pānaḥ śarīriṇām ॥13-146-20॥
