vaṁśānukīrtanam
Recitation of the lineage.
yudhiṣṭhira uvāca॥
Yudhiṣṭhira said.
kiṃ śreyaḥ puruṣasyeha kiṃ kurvansukhamedhate। vipāpmā ca bhavetkena kiṃ vā kalmaṣanāśanam ॥13-151-1॥
What is the highest good for a person here? By doing what does one gain happiness, become free from sin, and what leads to the destruction of impurity? (13-151-1)
bhīṣma uvāca॥
Bhīṣma said.
ayaṁ daivatavaṁśo vai ṛṣivaṁśasamanvitaḥ। dvisandhyaṁ paṭhitaḥ putra kalmaṣāpaharaḥ paraḥ॥13-151-2॥
This lineage, O son, is indeed of divine and sage descent; when recited at both twilights, it is a supreme remover of sin. (13-151-2)
devāsuragurur devaḥ sarvabhūtanamaskṛtaḥ। acintyo'thāpyanirdeśyaḥ sarvaprāṇo hyayonijaḥ ॥13-151-3॥
He is the teacher of gods and asuras, divine, honored by all beings, inconceivable and indescribable, the source of life for all, and is indeed one not born from a womb (13-151-3)
pitāmaho jagannāthaḥ sāvitrī brahmaṇaḥ satī. vedabhūratha kartā ca viṣṇur nārāyaṇaḥ prabhuḥ ॥13-151-4॥
He is the grandfather, the lord of the universe, Savitri, the true (wife) of Brahman, the origin of the Vedas, then the creator, and Viṣṇu, Nārāyaṇa, the lord. (13-151-4)
umāpatiḥ virūpākṣaḥ skandaḥ senāpatis tathā. viśākho hutabhug vāyuś candrādityau prabhākarau ॥13-151-5॥
Umāpati, Virūpākṣa, Skanda as commander of the army, also Viśākha, fire (the eater of oblations), Vāyu, and the moon and the sun, the illuminators. (13-151-5)
śakraḥ śacī-patir devo yamaḥ dhūmorṇayā saha। varuṇaḥ saha gauryā ca saha ṛddhyā dhaneśvaraḥ॥13-151-6॥
Indra, the lord of the gods and husband of Śacī, Yama with Dhūmūrṇā, Varuṇa with Gaurī, and Kubera, the lord of wealth, with Ṛddhi. (13-151-6)
saumyā gauḥ surabhir devī viśravāś ca mahān ṛṣiḥ । ṣaṭkālaḥ sāgaro gaṅgā sravantyaḥ atha marudgaṇāḥ ॥13-151-7॥
The gentle cow, Surabhi the goddess, Viśravā, the great sage, the six seasons, the ocean, Ganga, the flowing rivers, and the groups of Maruts. (13-151-7)
vālkhiḷyās tapaḥsiddhāḥ kṛṣṇadvaipāyanas tathā. nāradaḥ parvataś caiva viśvāvasur hahāhuhūḥ ॥13-151-8॥
The Vālakhilyas, the perfected sages, Kṛṣṇadvaipāyana as well, Nārada, Parvata and indeed Viśvāvasu, Hahā and Huhū. (13-151-8)
tumbaruś citrasenaś ca devadūtaś ca viśrutaḥ। devakanyā mahābhāgā divyāś cāpsarasāṃ gaṇāḥ ॥13-151-9॥
Tumbaru, Citrasena, and Devadūta, renowned, as well as the greatly fortunate and divine maidens and the companies of celestial apsarases. (13-151-9)
urvaśī menakā rambhā miśrakeśī alambuṣā। viśvācī ca ghṛtācī ca pañcachūḍā tilottamā ॥13-151-10॥
Urvaśī, Menakā, Rambhā, Miśrakeśī, Alambuṣā, Viśvācī, Ghṛtācī, Pañcachūḍā, and Tilottamā. (13-151-10)
ādityā vasavo rudrāḥ sāśvinaḥ pitaro'pi ca। dharmaḥ satyaṃ tapo dīkṣā vyavasāyaḥ pitāmahaḥ ॥13-151-11॥
The Ādityas, Vasus, Rudras, the Ashvins, and the Ancestors also; righteousness, truth, austerity, initiation, resolve, and the Grandfather (Brahmā). (13-151-11)
śarvaryo divasāś caiva mārīcaḥ kaśyapas tathā। śukro bṛhaspatir bhaumo budho rāhuḥ śanaiścaraḥ ॥13-151-12॥
Nights, days, and indeed Mārīca, Kaśyapa also, Śukra, Bṛhaspati, Bhauma, Budha, Rāhu, and Śanaiścara. (13-151-12)
nakṣatrāṇy ṛtavaś caiva māsāḥ sandhyāḥ savatsarāḥ। vainateyāḥ samudrāś ca kadrujāḥ pannagās tathā॥13-151-13॥
Constellations, seasons, months, twilights, years, sons of Vinatā, oceans, and also the serpents who are the offspring of Kadru. (13-151-13)
śatadrūś ca vipāśā ca candrabhāgā sarasvatī। sindhuś ca devikā caiva puṣkaraṃ tīrtham eva ca ॥13-151-14॥
Śatadrū, Vipāśā, Candrabhāgā, Sarasvatī, Sindhu, Devikā, and also Puṣkara—these are all holy places. (13-151-14)
gaṅgā mahānadī caiva kapilā narmadā tathā। kampunā ca viśalyā ca karatoyāmbuvāhinī ॥13-151-15॥
The rivers Gaṅgā, Mahānadī, Kapilā, Narmadā, Kampunā, Viśalyā, and Karatoyā are among the water-bearing rivers. (13-151-15)
sarayūrgaṇḍakī caiva lohityaśca mahānadaḥ. tāmrāruṇā vetravatī parṇāśā gautamī tathā ॥13-151-16॥
Sarayu, Gandaki, Lohitya, the great river, Tamraruna, Vetravati, Parnasha, and Gautami—these rivers also. (13-151-16)
godāvarī ca veṇṇā ca kṛṣṇaveṇā tathādrijā. dṛṣadvatī ca kāverī vaṅkṣurmandākinī tathā ॥13-151-17॥
Godavari, Vennā, Kṛṣṇaveṇā—also those born in the mountains—Dṛṣadvatī, Kaveri, Vaṅkṣu, and Mandākinī. (13-151-17)
prayāgaṃ ca prabhāsaṃ ca puṇyaṃ naimiṣam eva ca। tac ca viśveśvarasthānaṃ yatra tad vimalaṃ saraḥ॥13-151-18॥
Prayāga, Prabhāsa, the sacred Naimiṣa itself, and that abode of Viśveśvara where that pure lake is. (13-151-18)
puṇyatīrthaiś ca kalilaṃ kurukṣetraṃ prakīrtitam. sindhūttamaṃ tapodānaṃ jambūmārgam athāpi ca ॥13-151-19॥
Kurukṣetra is declared by sacred fords as impure. The best among rivers, ascetic practice, gifts, and the Jambū path are also mentioned. (13-151-19)
hiraṇvatī vitastā ca tathaiva ikṣumatī nadī। vedasmṛtir vaidasinī malavāsāś ca nady api ॥13-151-20॥
The rivers Hiraṇvatī, Vitastā, likewise Ikṣumatī, Vedasmṛti, Vaidasinī, Malavāsā, and others also. (13-151-20)
bhūmibhāgās tathā puṇyā gaṅgādvāram athāpi ca। ṛṣikulyās tathā medhyā nadī citrapathā tathā ॥13-151-21॥
The portions of land, as well as holy places like Gaṅgādvāra, and also the river Ṛṣikulyā, the sacred river Medhyā, and the river Citrapathā, are likewise auspicious. (13-151-21)
kauśikī yamunā sītā tathā carmaṇvatī nadī. nadī bhīmarathī caiva bāhudā ca mahānadī ॥ mahendravāṇī tridivā nīlikā ca sarasvatī ॥13-151-22॥
Kauśikī, Yamunā, Sītā, as well as the river Carmaṇvatī, the river Bhīmarathī, Bāhudā, Mahānadī, Mahendravāṇī, Tridivā, Nīlikā, and Sarasvatī. (13-151-22)
nandā cāparanandā ca tathā tīrthaṃ mahāhradam। gayātha phalgutīrthaṃ ca dharmāraṇyaṃ surairvṛtam ॥13-151-23॥
Nandā, Aparanandā, the great pilgrimage pond, Gayā, the Phalgu pilgrimage site, and Dharmāraṇya—these places, surrounded by the gods, are mentioned. (13-151-23)
tathā devanadī puṇyā saraś ca brahmanirmitam। puṇyaṁ trilokavikhyātaṁ sarvapāpaharaṁ śivam॥13-151-24॥
Thus, the divine river and the sacred lake created by Brahma are renowned in the three worlds as sacred, a destroyer of all sins, and auspicious. (13-151-24)
himavān parvataś caiva divya-auṣadhi-samanvitaḥ। vindhyaḥ dhātu-vicitra-aṅgaḥ tīrtha-vān auṣadha-anvitaḥ॥13-151-25॥
The Himalaya mountain, indeed endowed with divine herbs; and the Vindhya, variegated with minerals, possessing sacred bathing places, and rich in herbs. (13-151-25)
merurmahendro malayaḥ śvetaśca rajatācitaḥ। śṛṅgavānmandaro nīlo niṣadho dardurastathā ॥13-151-26॥
Meru, Mahendra, Malaya, Śveta, Rajatācita, Śṛṅgavān, Mandara, Nīla, Niṣadha, and also Dardura (are the names of mountains). (13-151-26)
citrakūṭo'ñjanābhaś ca parvato gandhamādanaḥ। puṇyaḥ somagiriś caiva tathaivānye mahīdharāḥ॥ diśaś ca vidiśaś caiva kṣitiḥ sarve mahīruhāḥ॥13-151-27॥
Citrakūṭa, Añjanābha, Gandhamādana, the blessed mountain Somagiri, and other mountains likewise; the directions and intermediate directions, the earth, and all trees. (13-151-27)
viśvedevā nabhaścaiva nakṣatrāṇi grahāstathā। pāntu vaḥ satataṃ devāḥ kīrtitākīrtitā mayā ॥13-151-28॥
May all the deities, the sky, the stars, and the planets also always protect you—all the gods, whether praised or unpraised by me. (13-151-28)
kīrtayāno naro hyetān mucyate sarvakilbiṣaiḥ। stuvaṃś ca pratinandaṃś ca mucyate sarvato bhayāt॥ sarvasaṅkara-pāpebhyo devatā-stava-nandakaḥ॥13-151-29॥
A man who praises these is indeed freed from all sins. One who praises and rejoices in worship is freed from fear on all sides. He who takes delight in the worship of the deities is liberated from all accumulated sins. (13-151-29)
devatānantaraṃ viprāṃstapaḥsiddhāṃstapodhikān। kīrtitānkīrtayiṣyāmi sarvapāpapramocanān ॥13-151-30॥
After narrating the deities, I shall now praise the brāhmaṇas, those perfected by austerity, those superior in austerity, who have been praised and are removers of all sins. (13-151-30)
yavakrīto’tha raibhyaś ca kakṣīvān auśijas tathā। bhṛgv-aṅgirās tathā kaṇvo medhātithir atha prabhuḥ ॥ barhī ca guṇasampannaḥ prācīṃ diśam upāśritāḥ ॥13-151-31॥
Yavakrīta, then Raibhya, Kakṣīvān, Auśija, Bhṛgu and Aṅgiras, Kaṇva, Medhātithi, and the lord, and Barhī, endowed with virtues, all resorted to the eastern direction. (13-151-31)
bhadrāṃ diśaṃ mahābhāgā ulmucuḥ pramucus tathā। mumucuś ca mahābhāgaḥ svasty-ātreyaś ca vīryavān ॥13-151-32॥
The highly fortunate ones showered (oblations) toward the auspicious direction; they also offered in the same way; and the highly fortunate and powerful Svastyātreya did so as well. (13-151-32)
mitrāvaruṇayoḥ putras tathāgastyah pratāpavān। dṛḍhāyuś cordhvabāhuś ca viśrutāv ṛṣisattamau ॥13-151-33॥
Agastya, the powerful son of Mitra and Varuṇa, endowed with steadfast life and uplifted arms, both are renowned as the best of sages. (13-151-33)
paścimāṃ diśam āśritya ya edhante nibodha tān। uṣadguḥ saha sodaryaiḥ parivyādhaś ca vīryavān॥13-151-34॥
Know those who thrive in the western direction as Uṣadgu along with his siblings and the powerful Parivyādha. (13-151-34)
ṛṣir dīrghatamāś caiva gautamaḥ kaśyapas tathā। ekataś ca dvitaś caiva tritaś caiva maharṣayaḥ॥ atreḥ putraś ca dharmātmā tathā sārsvataḥ prabhuḥ॥13-151-35॥
The sages Dīrghatamā, Gautama, and Kaśyapa; as well as the great sages Ekata, Dvita, and Trita; along with Atri's son, the righteous-souled, and Sarasvata the lord. (13-151-35)
uttarāṃ diśam āśritya ya edhante nibodha tān। atrir vasiṣṭhaḥ śaktiś ca pārāśaryaś ca vīryavān॥13-151-36॥
Know those who prosper in the northern direction: Atri, Vasiṣṭha, Śakti, and the mighty Pārāśarya. (13-151-36)
viśvāmitro bharadvājo jamadagnis tathaiva ca। ṛcīkapautro rāmaś ca ṛṣir auddālakis tathā॥13-151-37॥
Viśvāmitra, Bharadvāja, Jamadagni, likewise; the grandson of Ṛcīka, Rāma, and also the sage Auddālaki. (13-151-37)
śvetaketuḥ kohalaś ca vipulo devalas tathā। devaśarmā ca dhaumyaś ca hastikāśyapa eva ca ॥13-151-38॥
Śvetaketu, Kohala, Vipula, Devala, Devaśarman, Dhaumya, and also indeed Hastikāśyapa. (13-151-38)
lomaśo nāciketaś ca lomaharṣaṇa eva ca। ṛṣir ugraśravāś caiva bhārgavaś cyavanaś tathā॥13-151-39॥
Lomaśa, Naciketas, Lomaharṣaṇa, the sage Ugraśravā, as well as Bhārgava Cyavana also. (13-151-39)
eṣa vai samavāyas te ṛṣidevasamanvitaḥ। ādyaḥ prakīrtito rājan sarvapāpapramocanaḥ ॥13-151-40॥
O king, this assembly of yours, endowed with sages and gods, is described as the first and as a means of release from all sins. (13-151-40)
nṛgo yayātir nahuṣo yaduḥ pūruś ca vīryavān। dhundhumāro dilīpaś ca sagaraś ca pratāpavān॥13-151-41॥
Nṛga, Yayāti, Nahuṣa, Yadu, the mighty Pūru; Dhundhumāra, Dilīpa and the illustrious Sagara. (13-151-41)
kṛśāśvo yauvanāśvaś ca citrāśvaḥ satyavāṃs tathā। duḥṣanto bharataś caiva cakravartī mahāyaśāḥ॥13-151-42॥
Kṛśāśva, Yauvanāśva, Citrāśva, Satyavān, Duḥṣanta, and Bharata—these universally renowned rulers were of great fame. (13-151-42)
yavano janakaś caiva tathā dṛḍharatho nṛpaḥ। raghur naravaraś caiva tathā daśaratho nṛpaḥ ॥13-151-43॥
Yavana, Janaka, and likewise King Dṛḍharatha; Raghu, the foremost of men, and likewise King Daśaratha. (13-151-43)
Rāmo rākṣasahā vīraḥ śaśabindur-bhagīrathaḥ। hariścandro maruttaś-ca jahnur-jāhnavisevitā ॥13-151-44॥
Rāma, the destroyer of Rākṣasas, the hero, Śaśabindu, Bhagīratha, Hariścandra, Marutta, and Jahnu who is served by Jāhnavī. (13-151-44)
mahodayo hy alarkaś ca aiłaś caiva narādhipaḥ. karandhamo naraśreṣṭhaḥ kadhmoraś ca narādhipaḥ ॥13-151-45॥
Indeed, Mahodaya, Alarka, Aila (all were) kings; Karandhama, the best among men, and Kadhmora were also kings. (13-151-45)
dakṣo’mbariṣaḥ kukuro ravataś ca mahāyaśāḥ। mucukundaś ca rājarṣir mitrabhānuḥ priyaṅkaraḥ ॥13-151-46॥
Daksha, Ambarisha, Kukura, and the illustrious Ravata; Mucukunda, the royal sage; Mitrabhanu, and Priyankara. (13-151-46)
trasadasyus tathā rājā śveto rājarṣi-sattamaḥ। mahābhiṣaś ca vikhyāto nimir ājas tathāṣṭakaḥ॥13-151-47॥
Trasadasyu, King Śveta—foremost among royal sages—Mahābhiṣa the famous, King Nimi, and similarly Aṣṭaka. (13-151-47)
āyuḥ kṣupaś ca rājarṣiḥ kakṣeyuś ca narādhipaḥ। śibirauśīnaraś caiva gayaś caiva narādhipaḥ ॥13-151-48॥
Ayuḥ, Kṣupa, the royal seer, Kakṣeyu the king; Śibi, Auśīnara, and likewise Gaya — all were kings. (13-151-48)
pratardano divodāsaḥ saudāsaḥ kosaleśvaraḥ। ailo nalaś ca rājarṣir manuś caiva prajāpatiḥ॥13-151-49॥
Pratardana, Divodāsa, Saudāsa, the lord of Kosala, Aila, Nala, the royal sage Manu, and the lord of creatures (Prajapati). (13-151-49)
havidhraś ca pṛṣadhraś ca pratīpaḥ śantanuḥ tathā। kakṣasenaś ca rājarṣir ye ca anye na anukīrtitāḥ ॥13-151-50॥
Havidhra, Pṛṣadhra, Pratīpa, Śantanu, Kakṣasena, the royal sage, and other unmentioned ones. (13-151-50)
mā vighnaṃ mā ca me pāpaṃ mā ca me paripanthinaḥ| dhruvo jayo me nityaṃ syāt paratra ca parā gatiḥ ॥13-151-51॥
Let there be no obstacle, nor any sin for me, nor any enemies for me. May I always have firm victory, and supreme attainment in the hereafter as well. (13-151-51)
