वंशानुकीर्तनम्
Recitation of the lineage.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥
Yudhiṣṭhira said.
किं श्रेयः पुरुषस्येह किं कुर्वन्सुखमेधते। विपाप्मा च भवेत्केन किं वा कल्मषनाशनम् ॥१३-१५१-१॥
What is the highest good for a person here? By doing what does one gain happiness, become free from sin, and what leads to the destruction of impurity? (13-151-1)
भीष्म उवाच॥
Bhīṣma said.
अयं दैवतवंशो वै ऋषिवंशसमन्वितः। द्विसन्ध्यं पठितः पुत्र कल्मषापहरः परः ॥१३-१५१-२॥
This lineage, O son, is indeed of divine and sage descent; when recited at both twilights, it is a supreme remover of sin. (13-151-2)
देवासुरगुरुर्देवः सर्वभूतनमस्कृतः। अचिन्त्योऽथाप्यनिर्देश्यः सर्वप्राणो ह्ययोनिजः ॥१३-१५१-३॥
He is the teacher of gods and asuras, divine, honored by all beings, inconceivable and indescribable, the source of life for all, and is indeed one not born from a womb (13-151-3)
पितामहो जगन्नाथः सावित्री ब्रह्मणः सती। वेदभूरथ कर्ता च विष्णुर्नारायणः प्रभुः ॥१३-१५१-४॥
He is the grandfather, the lord of the universe, Savitri, the true (wife) of Brahman, the origin of the Vedas, then the creator, and Viṣṇu, Nārāyaṇa, the lord. (13-151-4)
उमापतिर्विरूपाक्षः स्कन्दः सेनापतिस्तथा। विशाखो हुतभुग्वायुश्चन्द्रादित्यौ प्रभाकरौ ॥१३-१५१-५॥
Umāpati, Virūpākṣa, Skanda as commander of the army, also Viśākha, fire (the eater of oblations), Vāyu, and the moon and the sun, the illuminators. (13-151-5)
शक्रः शचीपतिर्देवो यमो धूमोर्णया सह। वरुणः सह गौर्या च सह ऋद्ध्या धनेश्वरः ॥१३-१५१-६॥
Indra, the lord of the gods and husband of Śacī, Yama with Dhūmūrṇā, Varuṇa with Gaurī, and Kubera, the lord of wealth, with Ṛddhi. (13-151-6)
सौम्या गौः सुरभिर्देवी विश्रवाश्च महानृषिः। षट्कालः सागरो गङ्गा स्रवन्त्योऽथ मरुद्गणाः ॥१३-१५१-७॥
The gentle cow, Surabhi the goddess, Viśravā, the great sage, the six seasons, the ocean, Ganga, the flowing rivers, and the groups of Maruts. (13-151-7)
वालखिल्यास्तपःसिद्धाः कृष्णद्वैपायनस्तथा। नारदः पर्वतश्चैव विश्वावसुर्हहाहुहूः ॥१३-१५१-८॥
The Vālakhilyas, the perfected sages, Kṛṣṇadvaipāyana as well, Nārada, Parvata and indeed Viśvāvasu, Hahā and Huhū. (13-151-8)
तुम्बरुश्चित्रसेनश्च देवदूतश्च विश्रुतः। देवकन्या महाभागा दिव्याश्चाप्सरसां गणाः ॥१३-१५१-९॥
Tumbaru, Citrasena, and Devadūta, renowned, as well as the greatly fortunate and divine maidens and the companies of celestial apsarases. (13-151-9)
उर्वशी मेनका रम्भा मिश्रकेशी अलम्बुषा। विश्वाची च घृताची च पञ्चचूडा तिलोत्तमा ॥१३-१५१-१०॥
Urvaśī, Menakā, Rambhā, Miśrakeśī, Alambuṣā, Viśvācī, Ghṛtācī, Pañcachūḍā, and Tilottamā. (13-151-10)
आदित्या वसवो रुद्राः साश्विनः पितरोऽपि च। धर्मः सत्यं तपो दीक्षा व्यवसायः पितामहः ॥१३-१५१-११॥
The Ādityas, Vasus, Rudras, the Ashvins, and the Ancestors also; righteousness, truth, austerity, initiation, resolve, and the Grandfather (Brahmā). (13-151-11)
शर्वर्यो दिवसाश्चैव मारीचः कश्यपस्तथा। शुक्रो बृहस्पतिर्भौमो बुधो राहुः शनैश्चरः ॥१३-१५१-१२॥
Nights, days, and indeed Mārīca, Kaśyapa also, Śukra, Bṛhaspati, Bhauma, Budha, Rāhu, and Śanaiścara. (13-151-12)
नक्षत्राण्यृतवश्चैव मासाः सन्ध्याः सवत्सराः। वैनतेयाः समुद्राश्च कद्रुजाः पन्नगास्तथा ॥१३-१५१-१३॥
Constellations, seasons, months, twilights, years, sons of Vinatā, oceans, and also the serpents who are the offspring of Kadru. (13-151-13)
शतद्रूश्च विपाशा च चन्द्रभागा सरस्वती। सिन्धुश्च देविका चैव पुष्करं तीर्थमेव च ॥१३-१५१-१४॥
Śatadrū, Vipāśā, Candrabhāgā, Sarasvatī, Sindhu, Devikā, and also Puṣkara—these are all holy places. (13-151-14)
गङ्गा महानदी चैव कपिला नर्मदा तथा। कम्पुना च विशल्या च करतोयाम्बुवाहिनी ॥१३-१५१-१५॥
The rivers Gaṅgā, Mahānadī, Kapilā, Narmadā, Kampunā, Viśalyā, and Karatoyā are among the water-bearing rivers. (13-151-15)
सरयूर्गण्डकी चैव लोहित्यश्च महानदः। ताम्रारुणा वेत्रवती पर्णाशा गौतमी तथा ॥१३-१५१-१६॥
Sarayu, Gandaki, Lohitya, the great river, Tamraruna, Vetravati, Parnasha, and Gautami—these rivers also. (13-151-16)
गोदावरी च वेण्णा च कृष्णवेणा तथाद्रिजा। दृषद्वती च कावेरी वङ्क्षुर्मन्दाकिनी तथा ॥१३-१५१-१७॥
Godavari, Vennā, Kṛṣṇaveṇā—also those born in the mountains—Dṛṣadvatī, Kaveri, Vaṅkṣu, and Mandākinī. (13-151-17)
प्रयागं च प्रभासं च पुण्यं नैमिषमेव च। तच्च विश्वेश्वरस्थानं यत्र तद्विमलं सरः ॥१३-१५१-१८॥
Prayāga, Prabhāsa, the sacred Naimiṣa itself, and that abode of Viśveśvara where that pure lake is. (13-151-18)
पुण्यतीर्थैश्च कलिलं कुरुक्षेत्रं प्रकीर्तितम्। सिन्धूत्तमं तपोदानं जम्बूमार्गमथापि च ॥१३-१५१-१९॥
Kurukṣetra is declared by sacred fords as impure. The best among rivers, ascetic practice, gifts, and the Jambū path are also mentioned. (13-151-19)
हिरण्वती वितस्ता च तथैवेक्षुमती नदी। वेदस्मृतिर्वैदसिनी मलवासाश्च नद्यपि ॥१३-१५१-२०॥
The rivers Hiraṇvatī, Vitastā, likewise Ikṣumatī, Vedasmṛti, Vaidasinī, Malavāsā, and others also. (13-151-20)
भूमिभागास्तथा पुण्या गङ्गाद्वारमथापि च। ऋषिकुल्यास्तथा मेध्या नदी चित्रपथा तथा ॥१३-१५१-२१॥
The portions of land, as well as holy places like Gaṅgādvāra, and also the river Ṛṣikulyā, the sacred river Medhyā, and the river Citrapathā, are likewise auspicious. (13-151-21)
कौशिकी यमुना सीता तथा चर्मण्वती नदी। नदी भीमरथी चैव बाहुदा च महानदी ॥ महेन्द्रवाणी त्रिदिवा नीलिका च सरस्वती ॥१३-१५१-२२॥
Kauśikī, Yamunā, Sītā, as well as the river Carmaṇvatī, the river Bhīmarathī, Bāhudā, Mahānadī, Mahendravāṇī, Tridivā, Nīlikā, and Sarasvatī. (13-151-22)
नन्दा चापरनन्दा च तथा तीर्थं महाह्रदम्। गयाथ फल्गुतीर्थं च धर्मारण्यं सुरैर्वृतम् ॥१३-१५१-२३॥
Nandā, Aparanandā, the great pilgrimage pond, Gayā, the Phalgu pilgrimage site, and Dharmāraṇya—these places, surrounded by the gods, are mentioned. (13-151-23)
तथा देवनदी पुण्या सरश्च ब्रह्मनिर्मितम्। पुण्यं त्रिलोकविख्यातं सर्वपापहरं शिवम्॥१३-१५१-२४॥
Thus, the divine river and the sacred lake created by Brahma are renowned in the three worlds as sacred, a destroyer of all sins, and auspicious. (13-151-24)
हिमवान्पर्वतश्चैव दिव्यौषधिसमन्वितः। विन्ध्यो धातुविचित्राङ्गस्तीर्थवानौषधान्वितः ॥१३-१५१-२५॥
The Himalaya mountain, indeed endowed with divine herbs; and the Vindhya, variegated with minerals, possessing sacred bathing places, and rich in herbs. (13-151-25)
मेरुर्महेन्द्रो मलयः श्वेतश्च रजताचितः। शृङ्गवान्मन्दरो नीलो निषधो दर्दुरस्तथा ॥१३-१५१-२६॥
Meru, Mahendra, Malaya, Śveta, Rajatācita, Śṛṅgavān, Mandara, Nīla, Niṣadha, and also Dardura (are the names of mountains). (13-151-26)
चित्रकूटोऽञ्जनाभश्च पर्वतो गन्धमादनः। पुण्यः सोमगिरिश्चैव तथैवान्ये महीधराः ॥ दिशश्च विदिशश्चैव क्षितिः सर्वे महीरुहाः ॥१३-१५१-२७॥
Citrakūṭa, Añjanābha, Gandhamādana, the blessed mountain Somagiri, and other mountains likewise; the directions and intermediate directions, the earth, and all trees. (13-151-27)
विश्वेदेवा नभश्चैव नक्षत्राणि ग्रहास्तथा। पान्तु वः सततं देवाः कीर्तिताकीर्तिता मया ॥१३-१५१-२८॥
May all the deities, the sky, the stars, and the planets also always protect you—all the gods, whether praised or unpraised by me. (13-151-28)
कीर्तयानो नरो ह्येतान्मुच्यते सर्वकिल्बिषैः। स्तुवंश्च प्रतिनन्दंश्च मुच्यते सर्वतो भयात् ॥ सर्वसङ्करपापेभ्यो देवतास्तवनन्दकः ॥१३-१५१-२९॥
A man who praises these is indeed freed from all sins. One who praises and rejoices in worship is freed from fear on all sides. He who takes delight in the worship of the deities is liberated from all accumulated sins. (13-151-29)
देवतानन्तरं विप्रांस्तपःसिद्धांस्तपोधिकान्। कीर्तितान्कीर्तयिष्यामि सर्वपापप्रमोचनान् ॥१३-१५१-३०॥
After narrating the deities, I shall now praise the brāhmaṇas, those perfected by austerity, those superior in austerity, who have been praised and are removers of all sins. (13-151-30)
यवक्रीतोऽथ रैभ्यश्च कक्षीवानौशिजस्तथा। भृग्वङ्गिरास्तथा कण्वो मेधातिथिरथ प्रभुः ॥ बर्ही च गुणसम्पन्नः प्राचीं दिशमुपाश्रिताः ॥१३-१५१-३१॥
Yavakrīta, then Raibhya, Kakṣīvān, Auśija, Bhṛgu and Aṅgiras, Kaṇva, Medhātithi, and the lord, and Barhī, endowed with virtues, all resorted to the eastern direction. (13-151-31)
भद्रां दिशं महाभागा उल्मुचुः प्रमुचुस्तथा। मुमुचुश्च महाभागः स्वस्त्यात्रेयश्च वीर्यवान् ॥१३-१५१-३२॥
The highly fortunate ones showered (oblations) toward the auspicious direction; they also offered in the same way; and the highly fortunate and powerful Svastyātreya did so as well. (13-151-32)
मित्रावरुणयोः पुत्रस्तथागस्त्यः प्रतापवान्। दृढायुश्चोर्ध्वबाहुश्च विश्रुतावृषिसत्तमौ ॥१३-१५१-३३॥
Agastya, the powerful son of Mitra and Varuṇa, endowed with steadfast life and uplifted arms, both are renowned as the best of sages. (13-151-33)
पश्चिमां दिशमाश्रित्य य एधन्ते निबोध तान्। उषद्गुः सह सोदर्यैः परिव्याधश्च वीर्यवान् ॥१३-१५१-३४॥
Know those who thrive in the western direction as Uṣadgu along with his siblings and the powerful Parivyādha. (13-151-34)
ऋषिर्दीर्घतमाश्चैव गौतमः कश्यपस्तथा। एकतश्च द्वितश्चैव त्रितश्चैव महर्षयः ॥ अत्रेः पुत्रश्च धर्मात्मा तथा सारस्वतः प्रभुः ॥१३-१५१-३५॥
The sages Dīrghatamā, Gautama, and Kaśyapa; as well as the great sages Ekata, Dvita, and Trita; along with Atri's son, the righteous-souled, and Sarasvata the lord. (13-151-35)
उत्तरां दिशमाश्रित्य य एधन्ते निबोध तान्। अत्रिर्वसिष्ठः शक्तिश्च पाराशर्यश्च वीर्यवान् ॥१३-१५१-३६॥
Know those who prosper in the northern direction: Atri, Vasiṣṭha, Śakti, and the mighty Pārāśarya. (13-151-36)
विश्वामित्रो भरद्वाजो जमदग्निस्तथैव च। ऋचीकपौत्रो रामश्च ऋषिरौद्दालकिस्तथा ॥१३-१५१-३७॥
Viśvāmitra, Bharadvāja, Jamadagni, likewise; the grandson of Ṛcīka, Rāma, and also the sage Auddālaki. (13-151-37)
श्वेतकेतुः कोहलश्च विपुलो देवलस्तथा। देवशर्मा च धौम्यश्च हस्तिकाश्यप एव च ॥१३-१५१-३८॥
Śvetaketu, Kohala, Vipula, Devala, Devaśarman, Dhaumya, and also indeed Hastikāśyapa. (13-151-38)
लोमशो नाचिकेतश्च लोमहर्षण एव च। ऋषिरुग्रश्रवाश्चैव भार्गवश्च्यवनस्तथा ॥१३-१५१-३९॥
Lomaśa, Naciketas, Lomaharṣaṇa, the sage Ugraśravā, as well as Bhārgava Cyavana also. (13-151-39)
एष वै समवायस्ते ऋषिदेवसमन्वितः। आद्यः प्रकीर्तितो राजन्सर्वपापप्रमोचनः ॥१३-१५१-४०॥
O king, this assembly of yours, endowed with sages and gods, is described as the first and as a means of release from all sins. (13-151-40)
नृगो ययातिर्नहुषो यदुः पूरुश्च वीर्यवान्। धुन्धुमारो दिलीपश्च सगरश्च प्रतापवान् ॥१३-१५१-४१॥
Nṛga, Yayāti, Nahuṣa, Yadu, the mighty Pūru; Dhundhumāra, Dilīpa and the illustrious Sagara. (13-151-41)
कृशाश्वो यौवनाश्वश्च चित्राश्वः सत्यवांस्तथा। दुःषन्तो भरतश्चैव चक्रवर्ती महायशाः ॥१३-१५१-४२॥
Kṛśāśva, Yauvanāśva, Citrāśva, Satyavān, Duḥṣanta, and Bharata—these universally renowned rulers were of great fame. (13-151-42)
यवनो जनकश्चैव तथा दृढरथो नृपः। रघुर्नरवरश्चैव तथा दशरथो नृपः ॥१३-१५१-४३॥
Yavana, Janaka, and likewise King Dṛḍharatha; Raghu, the foremost of men, and likewise King Daśaratha. (13-151-43)
रामो राक्षसहा वीरः शशबिन्दुर्भगीरथः। हरिश्चन्द्रो मरुत्तश्च जह्नुर्जाह्नविसेविता ॥१३-१५१-४४॥
Rāma, the destroyer of Rākṣasas, the hero, Śaśabindu, Bhagīratha, Hariścandra, Marutta, and Jahnu who is served by Jāhnavī. (13-151-44)
महोदयो ह्यलर्कश्च ऐलश्चैव नराधिपः। करन्धमो नरश्रेष्ठः कध्मोरश्च नराधिपः ॥१३-१५१-४५॥
Indeed, Mahodaya, Alarka, Aila (all were) kings; Karandhama, the best among men, and Kadhmora were also kings. (13-151-45)
दक्षोऽम्बरीषः कुकुरो रवतश्च महायशाः। मुचुकुन्दश्च राजर्षिर्मित्रभानुः प्रियङ्करः ॥१३-१५१-४६॥
Daksha, Ambarisha, Kukura, and the illustrious Ravata; Mucukunda, the royal sage; Mitrabhanu, and Priyankara. (13-151-46)
त्रसदस्युस्तथा राजा श्वेतो राजर्षिसत्तमः। महाभिषश्च विख्यातो निमिराजस्तथाष्टकः ॥१३-१५१-४७॥
Trasadasyu, King Śveta—foremost among royal sages—Mahābhiṣa the famous, King Nimi, and similarly Aṣṭaka. (13-151-47)
आयुः क्षुपश्च राजर्षिः कक्षेयुश्च नराधिपः। शिबिरौशीनरश्चैव गयश्चैव नराधिपः ॥१३-१५१-४८॥
Ayuḥ, Kṣupa, the royal seer, Kakṣeyu the king; Śibi, Auśīnara, and likewise Gaya — all were kings. (13-151-48)
प्रतर्दनो दिवोदासः सौदासः कोसलेश्वरः। ऐलो नलश्च राजर्षिर्मनुश्चैव प्रजापतिः ॥१३-१५१-४९॥
Pratardana, Divodāsa, Saudāsa, the lord of Kosala, Aila, Nala, the royal sage Manu, and the lord of creatures (Prajapati). (13-151-49)
हविध्रश्च पृषध्रश्च प्रतीपः शन्तनुस्तथा। कक्षसेनश्च राजर्षिर्ये चान्ये नानुकीर्तिताः ॥१३-१५१-५०॥
Havidhra, Pṛṣadhra, Pratīpa, Śantanu, Kakṣasena, the royal sage, and other unmentioned ones. (13-151-50)
मा विघ्नं मा च मे पापं मा च मे परिपन्थिनः। ध्रुवो जयो मे नित्यं स्यात्परत्र च परा गतिः ॥१३-१५१-५१॥
Let there be no obstacle, nor any sin for me, nor any enemies for me. May I always have firm victory, and supreme attainment in the hereafter as well. (13-151-51)
