vyāsavākyam
The statement of Vyāsa.
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
Vaiśampāyana said.
evam-uktas tu rājñā sa dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa dhīmatā। tūṣṇīṃ babhūva medhāvī tam uvācātha keśavaḥ ॥14-2-1॥
Having thus been addressed by the intelligent king Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the wise one became silent; then Keśava spoke to him. (14-2-1)
atīva manasā śokaḥ kriyamāṇo janādhipa। santāpayati vai tasya pūrvapretān pitāmahān ॥14-2-2॥
O lord of men, grief excessively cultivated in the mind does indeed torment that person's departed ancestors and forefathers. (14-2-2)
yajasva vividhairyajñairbahubhiḥ svāptadakṣiṇaiḥ। devāṃstarpaya somena svadhayā ca pitṝnapi॥14-2-3॥
Perform various sacrifices in many ways, with appropriate gifts; satisfy the gods with Soma, and also the ancestors with Svadhā. (14-2-3)
tvad-vidhasya mahā-buddhe na etad adya upapadyate। viditam veditavyam te kartavyam api te kṛtam॥14-2-4॥
O great intellect, for one like you this is not appropriate today. What is known and what is to be known by you, as well as what is to be done by you – all that has already been accomplished. (14-2-4)
śrutāś ca rājadharmās te bhīṣmād bhāgīrathīsutāt। kṛṣṇadvaipāyanāc caiva nāradād vidurāt tathā ॥14-2-5॥
You have heard the duties of kings from Bhishma, the son of Bhagirathi, from Krishna Dvaipayana, from Narada, and also from Vidura. (14-2-5)
nemām arhhasi mūḍhānāṃ vṛttiṃ tvam anuvartitum। pitṛpaitāmahīṃ vṛttim āsthāya dhuram udvaha॥14-2-6॥
You should not follow the conduct of the deluded; taking up the ancestral conduct, bear the responsibility. (14-2-6)
yuktaṁ hi yaśasā kṣatraṁ svargaṁ prāptum asaṁśayam। na hi kaścana śūrāṇāṁ nihato'tra parāṅmukhaḥ ॥14-2-7॥
Valor, when joined with glory, is certainly fit to attain heaven without a doubt. Indeed, none of the warriors slain here turns away from battle. (14-2-7)
tyaja śokaṃ mahārāja bhavitavyaṃ hi tat tathā। na śakyās te punar draṣṭuṃ tvayā hy asmin raṇe hatāḥ ॥14-2-8॥
Give up your grief, O great king. What is destined to happen is indeed so. It is not possible for you to see those slain in this battle again. (14-2-8)
etāvaduktvā govindo dharmarājaṃ yudhiṣṭhiram। virarāma mahātejāstamuvāca yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥14-2-9॥
Having spoken thus, Govinda ceased addressing Dharmarāja Yudhiṣṭhira; then the greatly radiant Yudhiṣṭhira spoke to him. (14-2-9)
govinda mayi yā prītis tava sā viditā mama। sauhṛdena tathā premṇā sadā mām anukampase॥14-2-10॥
O Govinda, the affection you have for me is known to me. Through your friendship and love, you always show me compassion. (14-2-10)
priyaṃ tu me syātsumahatkṛtaṃ cakragadādhara। śrīmanprītena manasā sarvaṃ yāvadanandana ॥14-2-11॥
O cakragadādhara, O glorious one, truly let it be very dear to me as a great act—everything, with an affectionate mind, as much as you wish, O son. (14-2-11)
yadi mām anujānīyāt bhavān gantuṃ tapovanam। na hi śāntiṃ prapaśyāmi ghātayitvā pitāmaham ॥ karṇaṃ ca puruṣavyāghraṃ saṅgrāmeṣu apalāyinam ॥14-2-12॥
If you would allow me to go to the hermitage, I do not see any peace here, having killed my grandfather and Karna, the mighty tiger among men who never fled the battlefield. (14-2-12)
karmaṇā yena mucyeyamasmāt krūrād ariṃdama। karmaṇas tad vidhatsv iha yena śudhyati me manaḥ ॥14-2-13॥
O subduer of enemies, perform that action here by which I may be freed from this cruel state and by which my mind will be purified. (14-2-13)
tam evaṃ-vādinam vyāsaḥ tataḥ provāca dharma-vit। sāntvayan sumahā-tejāḥ śubham vacanam arthavat॥14-2-14॥
To him who was speaking thus, Vyāsa, the knower of dharma and of great brilliance, then spoke, consoling him with auspicious and meaningful words. (14-2-14)
akṛtā te matis tāta punar bālyena muhyase। kim ākāśe vayaṃ sarve pralapāma muhur muhuḥ॥14-2-15॥
Your mind is not yet formed, O dear; again you are deluded by childishness. Why do we all keep on babbling again and again into the sky? (14-2-15)
viditāḥ kṣatradharmās te yeṣāṃ yuddhena jīvikā। yathā pravṛtto nṛpatir nādhibandhena yujyate॥14-2-16॥
The duties of a Kṣatriya are well known: for those whose livelihood depends on war, just as a king acting thus is not bound by restriction. (14-2-16)
mokṣadharmāś ca nikhilā yāthātathyena te śrutāḥ। asakṛc caiva saṃdehāś chinnās te kāmajā mayā॥14-2-17॥
You have truly heard all the teachings concerning liberation, and your doubts arising from desire have been cut off by me, again and again. (14-2-17)
aśraddadhāno durmedhā luptasmṛtirasi dhruvam. maivaṃ bhava na te yuktam idam ajñānam īdṛśam ॥14-2-18॥
Truly, you are without faith, of wicked mind, and with lost memory; do not be so—such ignorance is not proper for you. (14-2-18)
prāyaścittāni sarvāṇi viditāni ca te'nagha। yuddhadharmāśca te sarve dānadharmāśca te śrutāḥ ॥14-2-19॥
Sinless one, all expiations are known to you; all the duties of battle and the duties of giving have also been heard by you. (14-2-19)
sa kathaṃ sarvadharmajñaḥ sarvāgamaviśāradaḥ। parimuhyasi bhūyastvamajñānādiva bhārata॥14-2-20॥
O Bhārata, how is it that you, who are the knower of all dharmas and expert in all scriptures, are again becoming thoroughly deluded as if from ignorance? (14-2-20)
