yudhiṣṭhira tava prajñā na samyag iti me matiḥ. na hi kaścit svayam martyaḥ svavaśaḥ kurute kriyāḥ ॥14-3-1॥

Yudhiṣṭhira, in my opinion, your discernment is not correct. Indeed, no mortal acts by his own will or under his own control. (14-3-1)
ईश्वरेण नियुक्तोऽयं साध्वसाधु च मानवः। करोति पुरुषः कर्म तत्र का परिदेवना ॥१४-३-२॥
īśvareṇa niyukto'yaṃ sādhvasādhu ca mānavaḥ। karoti puruṣaḥ karma tatra kā paridevanā॥14-3-2॥

तपोभिः क्रतुभिश्चैव दानेन च युधिष्ठिर। तरन्ति नित्यं पुरुषा ये स्म पापानि कुर्वते ॥१४-३-४॥
tapobhiḥ kratu-bhiś caiva dānena ca yudhiṣṭhira। taranti nityaṁ puruṣā ye sma pāpāni kurvate ॥14-3-4॥
[तपोभिः (tapobhiḥ) - by austerities; क्रतुभिः (kratu-bhiḥ) - by sacrifices; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; दानेन (dānena) - by gift; च (ca) - and; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - O Yudhiṣṭhira; तरन्ति (taranti) - cross over; नित्यं (nityaṁ) - always; पुरुषाः (puruṣāḥ) - men; ये (ye) - who; स्म (sma) - indeed; पापानि (pāpāni) - sins; कुर्वते (kurvate) - perform;]
(By austerities, by sacrifices indeed, by gift and, O Yudhiṣṭhira, always cross over men who indeed perform sins.)
O Yudhiṣṭhira, men who constantly commit sins do not cross over (are not saved) by austerities, by sacrifices or by giving gifts. (14-3-4)
यज्ञेन तपसा चैव दानेन च नराधिप। पूयन्ते राजशार्दूल नरा दुष्कृतकर्मिणः ॥१४-३-५॥
yajñena tapasā caiva dānena ca narādhipa। pūyante rājaśārdūla narā duṣkṛtakarmiṇaḥ ॥14-3-5॥
[यज्ञेन (yajñena) - by sacrifice; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; दानेन (dānena) - by gift; च (ca) - and; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O lord of men; पूयन्ते (pūyante) - are purified; राजशार्दूल (rājaśārdūla) - O tiger among kings; नराः (narāḥ) - men; दुष्कृतकर्मिणः (duṣkṛtakarmiṇaḥ) - evil-doers;]
(By sacrifice, by austerity, and by gift, O lord of men, O tiger among kings, men who are doers of evil are purified.)
O lord of men, O tiger among kings, men who have committed evil deeds are purified by sacrifice, austerity, and gifts. (14-3-5)
असुराश्च सुराश्चैव पुण्यहेतोर्मखक्रियाम्। प्रयतन्ते महात्मानस्तस्माद्यज्ञाः परायणम् ॥१४-३-६॥
asurāś ca surāś caiva puṇyahetor makhakriyām। prayatante mahātmānas tasmād yajñāḥ parāyaṇam ॥14-3-6॥

(Asuras and Suras indeed for the sake of merit ritual-sacrifice strive; great souls; therefore sacrifices (are) the supreme path.)
Both asuras and suras, for the sake of merit, engage themselves in ritual sacrifices; therefore, sacrifices are considered the supreme path by great souls. (14-3-6)
यज्ञैरेव महात्मानो बभूवुरधिकाः सुराः। ततो देवाः क्रियावन्तो दानवानभ्यधर्षयन् ॥१४-३-७॥
yajñaireva mahātmāno babhūvuradhikāḥ surāḥ। tato devāḥ kriyāvanto dānavānabhyadharṣayan ॥14-3-7॥
[यज्ञैः (yajñaiḥ) - by sacrifices; एव (eva) - indeed; महात्मानः (mahātmānaḥ) - great-souled ones; बभूवुः (babhūvuḥ) - became; अधिकाः (adhikāḥ) - superior; सुराः (surāḥ) - the gods; ततः (tataḥ) - then; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; क्रियावन्तः (kriyāvantaḥ) - rich in ritual acts; दानवान् (dānavān) - the Dānavas; अभ्यधर्षयन् (abhyadharṣayan) - attacked;]
(By sacrifices indeed, the great-souled gods became superior. Then the gods, endowed with ritual acts, attacked the Dānavas.)

O Bhārata, you, O king Yudhiṣṭhira, performed the rājasūya, aśvamedha, sarvamedha, and naramedha sacrifices. (14-3-8)
यजस्व वाजिमेधेन विधिवद्दक्षिणावता। बहुकामान्नवित्तेन रामो दाशरथिर्यथा ॥१४-३-९॥
yajasva vājimedhena vidhivad-dakṣiṇāvatā. bahukāmānna-vittena rāmo dāśarathir-yathā ॥14-3-9॥
[यजस्व (yajasva) - perform sacrifice; (verb, imperative); वाजिमेधेन (vājimedhena) - with the horse sacrifice; (instrumental); विधिवत् (vidhivat) - according to rule; properly; दक्षिणावता (dakṣiṇāvatā) - with gifts; (possessing) generous gifts; बहुकामान्नवित्तेन (bahukāmānna-vittena) - with wealth of much-desired food; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rama; दाशरथिः (dāśarathiḥ) - the son of Dasharatha; यथा (yathā) - as; like;]
(Perform sacrifice with the horse sacrifice, properly, with generous gifts, with wealth of much-desired food, as Rama, the son of Dasharatha.)
Perform an Ashvamedha sacrifice, duly and with generous gifts given, and with abundant and desirable food, just as Rama, the son of Dasharatha, did. (14-3-9)
यथा च भरतो राजा दौःषन्तिः पृथिवीपतिः। शाकुन्तलो महावीर्यस्तव पूर्वपितामहः ॥१४-३-१०॥
yathā ca bharato rājā dauḥṣantiḥ pṛthivīpatiḥ। śākuntalo mahāvīryas tava pūrvapitāmahaḥ ॥14-3-10॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; च (ca) - and; भरतः (bharataḥ) - Bharata; राजा (rājā) - king; दौःषन्तिः (dauḥṣantiḥ) - descendant of Duḥṣanta; पृथिवीपतिः (pṛthivīpatiḥ) - lord of the earth; शाकुन्तलः (śākuntalaḥ) - son of Śakuntalā; महावीर्यः (mahāvīryaḥ) - of great might; तव (tava) - your; पूर्वपितामहः (pūrvapitāmahaḥ) - former forefather;]
(Just as also Bharata king, descendant of Duḥṣanta, lord of the earth, son of Śakuntalā, of great might, your former forefather.)
Just as Bharata, the king, descendant of Duḥṣanta, lord of the earth, son of Śakuntalā, of great might, was your former forefather. (14-3-10)

असंशयं वाजिमेधः पावयेत्पृथिवीमपि। अभिप्रायस्तु मे कश्चित्तं त्वं श्रोतुमिहार्हसि ॥१४-३-११॥
asaṃśayaṃ vājimedhaḥ pāvayet pṛthivīm api. abhiprāyas tu me kaścit taṃ tvaṃ śrotum ihārhasi ॥14-3-11॥
[असंशयं (asaṃśayam) - undoubtedly; वाजिमेधः (vājimedhaḥ) - aśvamedha sacrifice; पावयेत् (pāvayet) - may purify; पृथिवीम् (pṛthivīm) - the earth; अपि (api) - even; अभिप्रायः (abhiprāyaḥ) - intention; तु (tu) - but; मे (me) - my; कश्चित् (kaścit) - some; तं (taṃ) - that; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; श्रोतुम् (śrotum) - to hear; इह (iha) - here; अर्हसि (arhasi) - ought;]
(Undoubtedly, the aśvamedha sacrifice may purify even the earth. But some intention of mine, that, you ought to hear here.)
Undoubtedly, the aśvamedha sacrifice can purify even the earth; but I have a certain intention, which you should hear now. (14-3-11)
इमं ज्ञातिवधं कृत्वा सुमहान्तं द्विजोत्तम। दानमल्पं न शक्यामि दातुं वित्तं च नास्ति मे ॥१४-३-१२॥
imaṃ jñātivadhaṃ kṛtvā sumahāntaṃ dvijottama। dānam-alpaṃ na śakyāmi dātuṃ vittaṃ ca nāsti me ॥14-3-12॥
[इमं (imaṃ) - this; ज्ञातिवधं (jñātivadham) - slaughter of kinsmen; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; सुमहान्तं (sumahāntam) - very great; द्विजोत्तम (dvijottama) - O best of twice-born; दानमल्पं (dānam-alpam) - gift (that is) small; न (na) - not; शक्यामि (śakyāmi) - I am able; दातुं (dātuṃ) - to give; वित्तं (vittaṃ) - wealth; च (ca) - and; नास्ति (nāsti) - is not; मे (me) - to me;]
(This slaughter of kinsmen having done, very great, O best of twice-born; a small gift I am not able to give, wealth also is not with me.)
O best of the twice-born, having done this very great slaughter of kinsmen, I am not able to give even a small gift—wealth is not with me. (14-3-12)
न च बालानिमान्दीनानुत्सहे वसु याचितुम्। तथैवार्द्रव्रणान्कृच्छ्रे वर्तमानान्नृपात्मजान् ॥१४-३-१३॥
na ca bālān imān dīnān utsahe vasu yācitum। tathaiva ārdra-vraṇān kṛcchre vartamānān nṛpa-ātmajān ॥14-3-13॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; बालान् (bālān) - children; इमान् (imān) - these; दीनान् (dīnān) - distressed; उत्सहे (utsahe) - am able; वसु (vasu) - wealth; याचितुम् (yācitum) - to ask; तथैव (tathaiva) - likewise; आर्द्रव्रणान् (ārdra-vraṇān) - with fresh wounds; कृच्छ्रे (kṛcchre) - in hardship; वर्तमानान् (vartamānān) - existing; नृपात्मजान् (nṛpa-ātmajān) - princes;]
(Not and children these distressed am able wealth to ask. Likewise with fresh wounds in hardship existing princes.)
Nor am I able to ask these distressed children for wealth; likewise, I cannot (ask) princes who are existing in hardship with fresh wounds. (14-3-13)
स्वयं विनाश्य पृथिवीं यज्ञार्थे द्विजसत्तम। करमाहारयिष्यामि कथं शोकपरायणान् ॥१४-३-१४॥
svayaṃ vināśya pṛthivīṃ yajñārthe dvijasattama। karam āhārayiṣyāmi kathaṃ śokaparāyaṇān ॥14-3-14॥
[स्वयं (svayaṃ) - myself; विनाश्य (vināśya) - after destroying; पृथिवीं (pṛthivīm) - the earth; यज्ञार्थे (yajñārthe) - for the purpose of sacrifice; द्विजसत्तम (dvijasattama) - O best of twice-born; करम् (karam) - tribute; आहारयिष्यामि (āhārayiṣyāmi) - shall collect; कथं (kathaṃ) - how; शोकपरायणान् (śokaparāyaṇān) - absorbed in grief;]
(Myself after destroying the earth for the purpose of sacrifice, O best of twice-born, tribute shall collect; how (from those) absorbed in grief?)
O best of twice-born, after destroying the earth myself for the purpose of sacrifice, how shall I collect tribute from those who are absorbed in grief? (14-3-14)
दुर्योधनापराधेन वसुधा वसुधाधिपाः। प्रनष्टा योजयित्वास्मानकीर्त्या मुनिसत्तम ॥१४-३-१५॥
duryodhanāparādhena vasudhā vasudhādhipāḥ। pranaṣṭā yojayitv āsmānakīrtyā munisattama ॥14-3-15॥
[दुर्योधनापराधेन (duryodhanāparādhena) - by the offence of Duryodhana; वसुधा (vasudhā) - the earth; वसुधाधिपाः (vasudhādhipāḥ) - the lords of the earth; प्रनष्टा (pranaṣṭā) - destroyed; योजयित्वा (yojayitvā) - having united; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; कीर्त्या (kīrtyā) - by fame; मुनिसत्तम (munisattama) - O best of sages;]
(By the offence of Duryodhana, the earth, the lords of the earth, destroyed; having united us by fame, O best of sages.)
O best of sages, by the offence of Duryodhana the earth and its rulers were destroyed; having then united us by fame.
दुर्योधनेन पृथिवी क्षयिता वित्तकारणात्। कोशश्चापि विशीर्णोऽसौ धार्तराष्ट्रस्य दुर्मतेः ॥१४-३-१६॥
duryodhanena pṛthivī kṣayitā vittakāraṇāt। kośaś cāpi viśīrṇo'sau dhārtarāṣṭrasya durmateḥ ॥14-3-16॥
[दुर्योधनेन (duryodhanena) - by Duryodhana; पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - the earth; क्षयिता (kṣayitā) - has been destroyed; वित्तकारणात् (vittakāraṇāt) - because of wealth; कोशः (kośaḥ) - the treasury; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; विशीर्णः (viśīrṇaḥ) - has been exhausted; असौ (asau) - that; धार्तराष्ट्रस्य (dhārtarāṣṭrasya) - of the son of Dhritarashtra; दुर्मतेः (durmateḥ) - of evil mind;]
(By Duryodhana, the earth has been destroyed because of wealth; and also the treasury has been exhausted of that son of Dhritarashtra of evil mind.)
Duryodhana, the ill-minded son of Dhritarashtra, has ruined the earth for the sake of wealth, and his treasury too has run dry. (14-3-16)
पृथिवी दक्षिणा चात्र विधिः प्रथमकल्पिकः। विद्वद्भिः परिदृष्टोऽयं शिष्टो विधिविपर्ययः ॥१४-३-१७॥
pṛthivī dakṣiṇā cātra vidhiḥ prathamakalpikaḥ। vidvadbhiḥ paridṛṣṭo'yaṃ śiṣṭo vidhiviparyayaḥ ॥14-3-17॥
[पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - Earth; land; दक्षिणा (dakṣiṇā) - honorarium; fee; gift; च (ca) - and; अत्र (atra) - here; विधिः (vidhiḥ) - rule; injunction; प्रथमकल्पिकः (prathamakalpikaḥ) - most original; in the primary sense; विद्वद्भिः (vidvadbhiḥ) - by the learned; by scholars; परिदृष्टः (paridṛṣṭaḥ) - observed; considered; अयम् (ayam) - this; शिष्टः (śiṣṭaḥ) - remaining; another; विधिविपर्ययः (vidhiviparyayaḥ) - reversal of the rule; transposition of the injunction;]
(Earth (land) and honorarium here, rule is most original. By the learned, this remaining is reversal of the rule.)

न च प्रतिनिधिं कर्तुं चिकीर्षामि तपोधन। अत्र मे भगवन्सम्यक्साचिव्यं कर्तुमर्हसि ॥१४-३-१८॥
na ca pratinidhiṃ kartuṃ cikīrṣāmi tapodhana. atra me bhagavan samyak sāci vyaṃ kartum arhasi ॥14-3-18॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; प्रतिनिधिं (pratinidhim) - a representative; कर्तुं (kartum) - to do; चिकीर्षामि (cikīrṣāmi) - I wish; तपोधन (tapodhana) - O possessor of ascetic wealth; अत्र (atra) - here; मे (me) - my; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O venerable one; सम्यक् (samyak) - rightly; साचिव्यं (sāci vyaṃ) - assistance; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought;]
(Not and a representative to do I wish, O possessor of ascetic wealth. Here my O venerable one, rightly assistance to do you ought. (14-3-18))
O possessor of ascetic wealth, I do not wish to appoint a representative. Here, O venerable one, you ought to properly render my assistance. (14-3-18)

एवमुक्तस्तु पार्थेन कृष्णद्वैपायनस्तदा। मुहूर्तमनुसञ्चिन्त्य धर्मराजानमब्रवीत् ॥१४-३-१९॥
evam-uktas tu pārthena kṛṣṇadvaipāyanas tadā। muhūrtam anusañcintya dharmarājānam abravīt॥14-3-19॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - spoken; addressed; तु (tu) - but; पार्थेन (pārthena) - by Pārtha; by Arjuna; कृष्णद्वैपयनः (kṛṣṇadvaipāyanaḥ) - Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana; Vyāsa; तदा (tadā) - then; मुहूर्तम् (muhūrtam) - for a moment; अनुसञ्चिन्त्य (anusañcintya) - after considering; reflecting; धर्मराजानम् (dharmarājānam) - to Dharmarāja; to Yudhiṣṭhira; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - he said;]
(Thus addressed by Pārtha, Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana then, after reflecting for a moment, said to Dharmarāja.)
Hearing these words from Pārtha, Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana (Vyāsa) thought for a moment and then spoke to Dharmarāja (Yudhiṣṭhira). (14-3-19)
विद्यते द्रविणं पार्थ गिरौ हिमवति स्थितम्। उत्सृष्टं ब्राह्मणैर्यज्ञे मरुत्तस्य महीपतेः ॥ तदानयस्व कौन्तेय पर्याप्तं तद्भविष्यति ॥१४-३-२०॥
vidyate draviṇaṁ pārtha girau himavati sthitam। utsṛṣṭaṁ brāhmaṇair yajñe maruttasya mahīpateḥ॥ tad ānayasva kaunteya paryāptaṁ tad bhaviṣyati॥14-3-20॥
[विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; द्रविणं (draviṇam) - wealth; पार्थ (pārtha) - O Pārtha; गिरौ (girau) - on the mountain; हिमवति (himavati) - in Himavat (the Himalaya); स्थितम् (sthitam) - deposited; उत्सृष्टम् (utsṛṣṭam) - abandoned; ब्राह्मणैः (brāhmaṇaiḥ) - by the Brāhmaṇas; यज्ञे (yajñe) - in (the) sacrifice; मरुत्तस्य (maruttasya) - of Marutta; महीपतेः (mahīpateḥ) - of the king; तत् (tat) - that; आनयस्व (ānayasva) - bring; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; पर्याप्तं (paryāptam) - adequate; तत् (tat) - that; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - it will be;]

O Pārtha, there is wealth deposited on the Himavat mountain, abandoned by the Brāhmaṇas at the sacrifice of King Marutta. Bring that, O son of Kunti; it will be sufficient. (14-3-20)

कथं यज्ञे मरुत्तस्य द्रविणं तत्समाचितम्। कस्मिंश्च काले स नृपो बभूव वदतां वर ॥१४-३-२१॥
kathaṁ yajñe maruttasya draviṇaṁ tatsamācitam। kasmiṁśca kāle sa nṛpo babhūva vadatāṁ vara ॥14-3-21॥

yadi śuśrūṣase pārtha śṛṇu kārandhamaṃ nṛpam। yasmin kāle mahāvīryaḥ sa rājā āsīn mahādhanaḥ ॥14-3-22॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; शुश्रूषसे (śuśrūṣase) - (you) desire to hear; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pṛthā; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; कारन्धमं (kār andhamaṃ) - Kārndhama; नृपम् (nṛpam) - king; यस्मिन् (yasmin) - in which; काले (kāle) - time; महावीर्यः (mahāvīryaḥ) - of great potency; स (sa) - he; राजा (rājā) - king; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; महाधनः (mahādhanaḥ) - greatly wealthy;]
