saṁvarta uvāca॥
Saṁvarta said.
girer himavataḥ pṛṣṭhe muñjavān nāma parvataḥ। tapyate yatra bhagavāṁs tapo nityam umāpatiḥ॥14-8-1॥
On the slopes of Mount Himavat stands a mountain called Muñjavān, where Lord Umāpati is ever engaged in austerities. (14-8-1)
vanaspatīnāṃ mūleṣu ṭaṅkeṣu śikhareṣu ca। guhāsu śailarājasya yathākāmaṃ yathāsukham ॥14-8-2॥
At the roots of trees, on summits, on peaks, and in the caves of the mountain king, freely and as one wishes. (14-8-2)
umāsahāyo bhagavān yatra nityaṁ maheśvaraḥ। āste śūlī mahātejā nānābhūtagaṇāvṛtaḥ॥14-8-3॥
Where the glorious Lord Maheśvara, companion of Uma, ever abides as the trident-bearer of great splendor, surrounded by hosts of various beings. (14-8-3)
tatra rudrāś ca sādhyāś ca viśve 'tha vasavas tathā| yamaś ca varuṇaś caiva kuberaś ca sahānugaḥ ॥14-8-4॥
There were the Rudras, Sādhyas, Viśvedevas, Vasus, as well as Yama, Varuṇa, and Kubera, each with their attendants. (14-8-4)
bhūtāni ca piśācāś ca nāsatyāvaśvināv api। gandharvāpsarasaś caiva yakṣā devarṣayas tathā ॥14-8-5॥
Beings, piśācas, the Nāsatyas (Aśvin twins) also, Gandharvas, Apsarases, Yakṣas, and divine ṛṣis as well. (14-8-5)
ādityā marutaś caiva yātudhānāś ca sarvaśaḥ। upāsante mahātmānaṃ bahurūpam umāpatim॥14-8-6॥
The Ādityas, Maruts, as well as all the Yātudhānas, all worship the great-souled, many-formed Umā's husband. (14-8-6)
ramate bhagavāṃs tatra kuberānucaraiḥ saha। vikṛtaiḥ vikṛtākāraiḥ krīḍadbhiḥ pṛthivīpate॥ śriyā jvalan dṛśyate vai bālādityasamadyutiḥ॥14-8-7॥
The Blessed Lord sports there together with Kubera’s attendants, O ruler of the earth, with those of distorted shapes engaged in play. He appears, indeed, shining with splendor, with a brightness equal to that of the rising sun. (14-8-7)
na rūpaṃ dṛśyate tasya saṃsthānaṃ vā kathaṃcana। nirdeṣṭuṃ prāṇibhiḥ kaiścit prākṛtaiḥ māṃsa-locanaiḥ ॥14-8-8॥
His form or structure is not seen in any way, nor can it be indicated by beings—by some mundane ones—with fleshly eyes. (14-8-8)
noṣṇaṁ na śiśiraṁ tatra na vāyur na ca bhāskaraḥ। na jarā kṣutpipāse vā na mṛtyur na bhayaṁ nṛpa॥14-8-9॥
There is neither heat nor cold; there is neither wind nor sun; there is no old age, no hunger or thirst, nor death, nor fear, O king. (14-8-9)
tasya śailasya pārśveṣu sarveṣu jayatāṃ vara। dhātavo jātarūpasya raśmayaḥ savitur yathā ॥14-8-10॥
On all sides of that mountain, O best of the victorious, gold ores are found just as the rays of Savitṛ (the Sun) (spread everywhere). (14-8-10)
rakṣyante te kuberasya sahāyairudyatāyudhaiḥ। cikīrṣadbhiḥ priyaṃ rājan kuberasya mahātmanaḥ॥ 14-8-11॥
O king, they are protected by the helpers of the great-souled Kubera, who stand ready with weapons, eager to serve Kubera's interests. (14-8-11)
tasmai bhagavate kṛtvā namaḥ śarvāya vedhase। rudrāya śitikaṇṭhāya surūpāya suvarcase ॥14-8-12॥
Offering salutation to that blessed lord—Śarva, the creator, Rudra, the white-throated one, the beautiful-formed and splendid one. (14-8-12)
kapardine karālāya haryakṣṇe varadāya ca। tryakṣṇe pūṣṇo dantabhide vāmanāya śivāya ca॥14-8-13॥
To the matted-haired one, the fierce one, the tawny-eyed one, the giver of boons; to the three-eyed one, to the breaker of Pūṣan's tooth, the dwarf, and the auspicious (Shiva). (14-8-13)
yāmyāyāvyaktakeśāya sadvṛtte śaṅkarāya ca। kṣemyāya harinetarāya sthāṇave puruṣāya ca ॥14-8-14॥
To Yāmya, to the one of unmanifest hair, virtuous, to Śaṅkara; to the giver of welfare, with the eyes of Hari, the steadfast, the Supreme Person, and so on. (14-8-14)
harikeśāya muṇḍāya kṛśāyottāraṇāya ca. bhāskarāya sutīrthāya devadevāya raṃhase ॥14-8-15॥
To the tawny-haired, the shaven-headed, the emaciated, the deliverer, the radiant one, the bestower of excellent ford, the god of gods, the swift one. (14-8-15)
uṣṇīṣiṇe suvaktrāya sahasrākṣāya mīḍhuṣe। giriśāya praśāntāya yataye cīravāsase ॥14-8-16॥
To the turbaned one, the one with a beautiful face, the thousand-eyed one, the bountiful one, the lord of the mountain, the tranquil one, the ascetic, the one clothed in bark garments. (14-8-16)
bilvadaṇḍāya siddhāya sarvadaṇḍadharāya ca। mṛgavyādhāya mahate dhanvine'tha bhavāya ca॥14-8-17॥
To the one holding the bilva staff, the accomplished one, the bearer of all staffs, the deer-hunter, the great one, the archer, and further to Bhava (Śiva). (14-8-17)
varāya saumya-vaktrāya paśu-hastāya varṣiṇe। hiraṇya-bāhave rājan-nugrāya pataye diśām ॥14-8-18॥
O king, to the best, gentle-faced, noose-bearing, showering, golden-armed, gracious lord of the directions. (14-8-18)
paśūnāṃ pataye caiva bhūtānāṃ pataye tathā. vṛṣāya mātṛbhaktāya senānye madhyamāya ca ॥14-8-19॥
To the lord of animals and also to the lord of beings; to the bull, to the one devoted to the mother, to the commander of armies, and to the one who is in the middle. (14-8-19)
sruvahastāya pataye dhanvine bhārgavāya ca। ajāya kṛṣṇanetrāya virūpākṣāya caiva ha ॥14-8-20॥
To him with a ladle in hand, the lord, the archer, Bhārgava, the unborn, the one with dark eyes, the one with misshapen eyes, and indeed, (I offer homage). (14-8-20)
tīkṣṇadaṃṣṭrāya tīkṣṇāya vaiśvānaramukhāya ca। mahādyutaye'naṅgāya sarvāṅgāya prajāvate ॥14-8-21॥
To him with sharp fangs, the fierce one, whose mouth is fire, who is greatly radiant, bodiless, of all limbs, and endowed with offspring. (14-8-21)
tathā śukrādhipataye pṛthave kṛttivāsase। kapālamāline nityaṁ suvarṇamukuṭāya ca ॥14-8-22॥
Thus, to the lord of Śukra, to Pṛthu, to the one clad in hide, to the one adorned with a garland of skulls, ever, and to the one with the golden crown. (14-8-22)
mahādevāya kṛṣṇāya tryambakāyānaghāya ca | krodhanāya nṛśaṁsāya mṛdave bāhuśāline ॥14-8-23॥
To the great god, to Kṛṣṇa, to the three-eyed one, to the sinless, and to the wrathful, merciless, gentle, strong-armed one. (14-8-23)
daṇḍine taptatapase tathaiva krūrakarmaṇe। sahasraśirase caiva sahasracaraṇāya ca ॥ namaḥ svadhāsvarūpāya bahurūpāya daṃṣṭriṇe ॥14-8-24॥
Salutations to the punisher, the one of intense austerity, the performer of fierce deeds, the thousand-headed, the thousand-footed; salutations to the one whose form is svadhā, who has many forms, and who is tusked. (14-8-24)
pinākinaṃ mahādevaṃ mahāyoginam avyayam। triśūlapāṇiṃ varadaṃ tryambakaṃ bhuvaneśvaram ॥14-8-25॥
The wielder of Pināka, the great god, the great yogin, the imperishable one, the trident-holder, the bestower of boons, the three-eyed lord, and ruler of the worlds. (14-8-25)
tripuraghnaṃ trīnayanaṃ trilokeśaṃ mahaujasaṃ। prabhavaṃ sarvabhūtānāṃ dhāraṇaṃ dharaṇīdharam॥14-8-26॥
"The destroyer of the three cities, the three-eyed one, lord of the three worlds, possessing great energy, the origin of all beings, the support, and the supporter of the earth." (14-8-26)
īśānaṃ śaṅkaraṃ sarvaṃ śivaṃ viśveśvaraṃ bhavam. umāpatiṃ paśupatiṃ viśvarūpaṃ maheśvaram ॥14-8-27॥
He who is the ruler, the bestower of happiness, the all, the auspicious, the lord of the universe, the originator—Umā's consort, lord of creatures, of universal form, the great lord. (14-8-27)
virūpākṣaṁ daśabhujaṁ tiṣyagovṛṣabhadhvajam। ugraṁ sthāṇuṁ śivaṁ ghoraṁ śarvaṁ gaurīśamīśvaram ॥14-8-28॥
He who has multi-formed eyes, ten arms, the bull-bannered born under the star Tiṣya, fierce, immovable, auspicious, terrible, destructive, lord of Gaurī and supreme lord. (14-8-28)
śitikaṇṭham ajaṃ śukraṃ pṛthuṃ pṛthuharaṃ haram। viśvarūpaṃ virūpākṣaṃ bahurūpam umāpatim ॥14-8-29॥
The one with a blue throat, who is unborn, pure, vast, the destroyer of the wide (evil), the remover, who has the form of the universe, the one with peculiar eyes, of many forms, and the husband of Umā. (14-8-29)
praṇamya śirasā devam-anaṅgāṅgaharam haram। śaraṇyaṃ śaraṇaṃ yāhi mahādevaṃ caturmukham॥14-8-30॥
Having bowed your head to the god Hara, the destroyer of Kāma’s body, who is a refuge, go to the great four-faced god. (14-8-30)
evaṃ kṛtvā namas tasmai mahādevāya raṃhase। mahātmane kṣitipate tat suvarṇam avāpsyasi ॥ suvarṇam āhariṣyantas tatra gacchantu te narāḥ ॥14-8-31॥
Having thus done, offering obeisance to him, to Mahadeva, the swift and great-souled one, you will obtain that gold, O king. Let your men who are to bring the gold go there. (14-8-31)
vyāsa uvāca॥
Vyāsa said.
ity-uktaḥ sa vacas tasya cakre kārandham-ātmajaḥ। tato'timānuṣaṃ sarvaṃ cakre yajñasya saṃvidhim॥ sauvarṇāni ca bhāṇḍāni sañcakrus tatra śilpinaḥ॥14-8-32॥
Thus addressed, the son of Kārandhama fulfilled his promise. Then, he prepared all the superhuman arrangements for the sacrifice, and the craftsmen there made vessels of gold. (14-8-32)
bṛhaspatistu tāṃ śrutvā maruttasya mahīpateḥ। samṛddhimati devebhyaḥ santāpamakarodbhṛśam ॥14-8-33॥
But Bṛhaspati, upon hearing that from King Marutta, caused great distress to the prosperous gods. (14-8-33)
sa tapyamānaḥ vaivarṇyaṃ kṛśatvaṃ ca āgamat param। bhaviṣyati hi me śatruḥ saṃvartaḥ vasumān iti ॥14-8-34॥
He, afflicted, became extremely pale and emaciated. "Indeed, Saṃvarta will become my enemy Vasumān"—thus (he thought). (14-8-34)
taṃ śrutvā bhṛśasantaptaṃ devarājo bṛhaspatim। abhigamyāmaravṛtaḥ provācedaṃ vacastadā ॥14-8-35॥
Having heard him, who was greatly afflicted, the king of the gods, Bṛhaspati, approached (him) accompanied by the immortals, and then said this.
