kaccitsu khaṃ svapiṣi tvaṃ bṛhaspate; kaccinmanojñāḥ paricārakāste। kaccidde vānāṃ sukhakāmo'si vipra; kaccidde vāstvāṃ paripālayanti ॥14-9-1॥

(Whether comfortably you sleep you, O Bṛhaspati; whether pleasing attendants are yours. Whether of the gods desirous of their happiness you are, O Brāhmaṇa; whether the gods you protect.)
O Bṛhaspati, do you sleep comfortably? Are your attendants pleasing? O Brāhmaṇa, do you desire the well-being of the gods? And do the gods protect you? (14-9-1)
बृहस्पतिरुवाच॥

सुखं शयेऽहं शयने महेन्द्र; तथा मनोज्ञाः परिचारका मे। तथा देवानां सुखकामोऽस्मि शक्र; देवाश्च मां सुभृशं पालयन्ति ॥१४-९-२॥
sukhaṃ śaye'haṃ śayane mahendra; tathā manojñāḥ paricārakā me. tathā devānāṃ sukhakāmo'smi śakra; devāś ca māṃ subhṛśaṃ pālayanti ॥14-9-2॥
[सुखं (sukham) - happily; शये (śaye) - I lie; अहम् (aham) - I; शयने (śayane) - on the bed; महेन्द्र (mahendra) - O Mahendra; तथा (tathā) - likewise; मनोज्ञाः (manojñāḥ) - charming; परिचारकाः (paricārakāḥ) - attendants; मे (me) - my; तथा (tathā) - also; देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; सुखकामः (sukhakāmaḥ) - desirous of happiness; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; शक्र (śakra) - O Śakra; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; च (ca) - and; माम् (mām) - me; सुभृशम् (subhṛśam) - very much; पालयन्ति (pālayanti) - they protect;]
("Happily I lie on the bed, O Mahendra; thus, my attendants are charming. In the same way, O Śakra, I am desirous of happiness for the gods; and the gods protect me very much." (14-9-2))
"I lie happily on my bed, O Mahendra; likewise, my attendants are charming. Just so, O Śakra, I desire the happiness of the gods, and the gods protect me very much." (14-9-2)

कुतो दुःखं मानसं देहजं वा; पाण्डुर्विवर्णश्च कुतस्त्वमद्य। आचक्ष्व मे तद्द्विज यावदेता; न्निहन्मि सर्वांस्तव दुःखकर्तॄन् ॥१४-९-३॥
kuto duḥkhaṃ mānasaṃ dehajaṃ vā; pāṇḍurvivarṇaś ca kutas tvam adya. ācakṣva me tad dvija yāvad etān nihānmi sarvān tava duḥkha-kartṝn ॥14-9-3॥

(From where suffering, mental or arising from the body, or? Pale, discoloured and from where you today? Tell to me that, O twice-born, until these I destroy all your pain-causers.)
From where is this suffering, whether mental or bodily? Why are you so pale and discoloured today? Tell me the cause, O twice-born, so that I may destroy all those who cause you pain. (14-9-3)
बृहस्पतिरुवाच॥

मरुत्तमाहुर्मघवन्यक्ष्यमाणं; महायज्ञेनोत्तमदक्षिणेन। तं संवर्तो याजयितेति मे श्रुतं; तदिच्छामि न स तं याजयेत ॥१४-९-४॥
maruttam āhur maghavan yakṣyamāṇam; mahāyajñena uttama-dakṣiṇena. tam saṁvarto yājayiteti me śrutam; tad icchāmi na sa taṁ yājayet ॥14-9-4॥
[मरुत्तम् (maruttam) - Marutta (a proper noun); आहु: (आहुः) (āhuḥ) - they say; मघवत् (maghavat) - Maghavat (name of Indra); यक्ष्यमाणं (yakṣyamāṇam) - about to perform a sacrifice; महायज्ञेन (mahā-yajñena) - with a great sacrifice; उत्तमदक्षिणेन (uttama-dakṣiṇena) - with the best (valuable) gifts; तं (tam) - him; संवर्त: (संवर्तः) (saṁvartaḥ) - Saṁvarta (a proper noun; sage); याजयिते (yājayite) - causes to perform the sacrifice; इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - to me; श्रुतं (śrutam) - it is heard; तत् (tat) - that; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I desire; न (na) - not; स (sa) - he; तं (tam) - him; याजयेत् (yājayet) - should cause to perform the sacrifice;]
(Marutta, they say, (is) Maghavat about to perform a sacrifice; with a great sacrifice, with the best gifts. Him Saṁvarta causes to perform the sacrifice, thus to me it is heard; that I desire, not he should cause him to perform the sacrifice. (14-9-4))
They say Marutta, who is about to offer sacrifice like Maghavat, is performing a great sacrifice with the best gifts. I have heard that Saṁvarta is to make him perform the sacrifice; that I desire, but he should not cause him to perform the sacrifice. (14-9-4)

सर्वान्कामाननुजातोऽसि विप्र; यस्त्वं देवानां मन्त्रयसे पुरोधाः। उभौ च ते जन्ममृत्यू व्यतीतौ; किं संवर्तस्तव कर्ताद्य विप्र ॥१४-९-५॥
sarvān-kāmān anujāto 'si vipra; yas tvaṁ devānāṁ mantrayase purodhāḥ। ubhau ca te janma-mṛtyū vyatītau; kiṁ saṁvartaḥ tava kartādya vipra ॥14-9-5॥
[सर्वान्कामान् (sarvān kāmān) - all desires; अनुजातः (anujātaḥ) - having attained; असि (asi) - you are; विप्र (vipra) - O brāhmaṇa; यः (yaḥ) - who; त्वम् (tvam) - you; देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; मन्त्रयसे (mantrayase) - you counsel; पुरोधाः (purodhāḥ) - priest; उभौ (ubhau) - both; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - for you; जन्ममृत्यू (janma-mṛtyū) - birth and death; व्यतीतौ (vyatītau) - have been surpassed; किम् (kim) - what; संवर्तः (saṁvartaḥ) - destruction; तव (tava) - for you; कर्ता (kartā) - doer; इद्य् (idya) - now; विप्र (vipra) - O brāhmaṇa;]
(All desires having attained you are, O brāhmaṇa; you who the gods' counsel as priest. Both and for you birth and death have been surpassed; what destruction for you is the doer now, O brāhmaṇa (14-9-5))
O brāhmaṇa, you have attained all desires; as the priest who counsels the gods. Both birth and death have been surpassed by you; what destruction can now befall you, O brāhmaṇa? (14-9-5)
बृहस्पतिरुवाच॥
bṛhaspatiruvāca॥
[बृहस्पति (bṛhaspati) - Bṛhaspati; (the name of a deity, spiritual teacher of the gods); उवाच (uvāca) - said;]

देवैः सह त्वमसुरान्सम्प्रणुद्य; जिघांससेऽद्याप्युत सानुबन्धान्। यं यं समृद्धं पश्यसि तत्र तत्र; दुःखं सपत्नेषु समृद्धभावः ॥१४-९-६॥
devaiḥ saha tvam asurān sampraṇudya; jighāṁsase ’dyāpy uta sānubandhān. yaṁ yaṁ samṛddhaṁ paśyasi tatra tatra; duḥkhaṁ sapatneṣu samṛddhabhāvaḥ ||14-9-6||
[देवैः (devaiḥ) - by the gods; सह (saha) - with; त्वम् (tvam) - you; असुरान् (asurān) - asuras; सम्प्रणुद्य (sampraṇudya) - having repelled; जिघांससे (jighāṁsase) - you desire to destroy; अद्यापि (adyāpi) - even today; उत (uta) - and; सानुबन्धान् (sānubandhān) - with followers; यं यं (yaṁ yaṁ) - whichever; समृद्धं (samṛddhaṁ) - prosperous; पश्यसि (paśyasi) - you see; तत्र तत्र (tatra tatra) - here and there; दुःखं (duḥkhaṁ) - sorrow; सपत्नेषु (sapatneṣu) - among rivals; समृद्धभावः (samṛddhabhāvaḥ) - state of prosperity;]
(With the gods, you, having repelled the asuras, desire to destroy, even today and along with their followers. Whichever prosperous one you see here and there, sorrow (is) the state of prosperity among rivals.)
Together with the gods, you have repelled the asuras and even now seek to destroy them with their followers. Wherever you see prosperity among rivals, that prosperity brings sorrow. (14-9-6)
अतोऽस्मि देवेन्द्र विवर्णरूपः; सपत्नो मे वर्धते तन्निशम्य। सर्वोपायैर्मघवन्संनियच्छ; संवर्तं वा पार्थिवं वा मरुत्तम् ॥१४-९-७॥
ato'smi devendra vivarṇarūpaḥ; sapatno me vardhate tanniśamya. sarvopāyair maghavan saṃniyaccha; saṃvartaṃ vā pārthivaṃ vā maruttam ॥14-9-7॥
[अतः (ato) (ataḥ) - therefore; अस्मि (asmi) (asmi) - I am; देवेन्द्र (devendra) (devendra) - O Indra, chief of the gods; विवर्णरूपः (vivarṇarūpaḥ) (vivarṇarūpaḥ) - one with discoloured form; सप्त्नः (sapatnaḥ) (sapatnaḥ) - rival; मे (me) (me) - my; वर्धते (vardhate) (vardhate) - is growing; तत् (tat) (tat) - that; निशम्य (niśamya) (niśamya) - on hearing; सर्वोपायैः (sarvopāyaiḥ) (sarvopāyaiḥ) - by all means; मघवन् (maghavan) (maghavan) - O Maghavan (another name for Indra); संनियच्छ (saṃniyaccha) (saṃniyaccha) - restrain; संवर्तम् (saṃvartam) (saṃvartam) - Saṃvarta; वा (vā) (vā) - or; पार्थिवम् (pārthivam) (pārthivam) - king; वा (vā) (vā) - or; मरुत्तम् (maruttam) (maruttam) - Marutta; ॥१४-९-७॥ (॥14-9-7॥) - ;]
(Therefore I am, O Indra, of discoloured form; my rival is growing, on hearing that. By all means, O Maghavan, restrain either Saṃvarta or the king or Marutta.)
Therefore, O Indra, I am discoloured; my rival is increasing, having heard that. By all possible means, O Maghavan, restrain either Saṃvarta, the king, or Marutta. (14-9-7)

एहि गच्छ प्रहितो जातवेदो; बृहस्पतिं परिदातुं मरुत्ते। अयं वै त्वा याजयिता बृहस्पति; स्तथामरं चैव करिष्यतीति ॥१४-९-८॥
ehi gaccha prahito jātavedo; bṛhaspatiṃ paridātuṃ marutte. ayaṃ vai tvā yājayitā bṛhaspati; stathāmaraṃ caiva kariṣyatīti ॥14-9-8॥
[एहि (ehi) - come; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; प्रहितः (prahitaḥ) - sent; जातवेदः (jātavedaḥ) - Agni (the fire-god); बृहस्पतिम् (bṛhaspatim) - Bṛhaspati (the preceptor of the gods); परिदातुम् (paridātum) - to surround/give/protect; मरुत्ते (marutte) - to Marutta (the proper noun, king's name); अयम् (ayam) - this (person); वै (vai) - indeed; त्वा (tvā) - you; याजयिता (yājayitā) - the sacrificer; बृहस्पति (bṛhaspati) - Bṛhaspati; स्तथा (stathā) - also/likewise; अमरम् (amaram) - immortal; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; करिष्यति (kariṣyati) - will make/do; इति (iti) - thus;]
(Come, go, sent Agni; to surround Bṛhaspati for Marutta. This indeed, you, the sacrificer, Bṛhaspati; likewise immortal and indeed will make thus.)
Come, go! Sent is Agni to surround Bṛhaspati for Marutta. This one, indeed, Bṛhaspati, will make you perform the sacrifice and also make you immortal thus. (14-9-8)
अग्निरुवाच॥

अयं गच्छामि तव शक्राद्य दूतो; बृहस्पतिं परिदातुं मरुत्ते। वाचं सत्यां पुरुहूतस्य कर्तुं; बृहस्पतेश्चापचितिं चिकीर्षुः ॥१४-९-९॥
ayaṃ gacchāmi tava śakrādya dūto; bṛhaspatiṃ paridātuṃ marutte. vācaṃ satyāṃ puruhūtasya kartuṃ; bṛhaspateścāpacitiṃ cikīrṣuḥ ॥14-9-9॥
[अयं (ayaṃ) - this (person); गच्छामि (gacchāmi) - I go; तव (tava) - your; शक्राद्य (śakrādya) - of Śakra (Indra), etc.; दूतो (dūtaḥ) - as a messenger; बृहस्पतिं (bṛhaspatim) - Bṛhaspati (the preceptor of gods); परिदातुं (paridātum) - to bestow; मरुत्ते (marutte) - to Marutta; वाचं (vācam) - word; सत्यां (satyāṃ) - true; पुरुहूतस्य (puruḥūtasya) - of Puruhūta (epithet of Indra); कर्तुं (kartuṃ) - to do; बृहस्पतेश्च (bṛhaspateś ca) - and of Bṛhaspati; अपचितिं (apacitim) - honor, reverence; चिकीर्षुः (cikīrṣuḥ) - desiring to do;]
(This (person) I go your (as) Śakra etc.'s messenger; Bṛhaspati to bestow to Marutta. A word true of Puruhūta to do; and of Bṛhaspati honor desiring to do.)
I go, as the messenger of you and the others like Śakra, to bestow Bṛhaspati to Marutta, wishing to fulfill the true promise of Puruhūta and to render honor to Bṛhaspati. (14-9-9)
व्यास उवाच॥

ततः प्रायाद्धूमकेतुर्महात्मा; वनस्पतीन्वीरुधश्चावमृद्नन्। कामाद्धिमान्ते परिवर्तमानः; काष्ठातिगो मातरिश्वेव नर्दन् ॥१४-९-१०॥
tataḥ prāyāddhūmaketurmahātmā; vanaspatīnvīrudhaścāvamṛdnan। kāmāddhimānte parivartamānaḥ; kāṣṭhātigo mātariśveva nardan ॥14-9-10॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रायात् (prāyāt) - departed; धूमकेतुः (dhūmaketuḥ) - Dhūmaketu (a proper name, here: Agni, 'the fire-god'); महात्मा (mahātmā) - the great-souled; वनस्पतीन् (vanaspatīn) - trees; वीरुधः (vīrudhaḥ) - creepers; च (ca) - and; अवमृद्नन् (avamṛdnan) - crushing; कामात् (kāmāt) - by desire; धिमान्ते (dhimānte) - at the end of the mind; परिवर्तमानः (parivartamānaḥ) - moving around; काष्ठातिगः (kāṣṭhātigaḥ) - going through wood; मातरिश्वा (mātariśvā) - Mātariśvan (wind, vital air, or Agni in a certain sense); इव (iva) - like; नर्दन् (nardan) - roaring;]
(Then departed Dhūmaketu the great-souled, trees and creepers and crushing, by desire at the end of the mind moving around, going through wood like Mātariśvan roaring.)
Then the great-souled Dhūmaketu departed, crushing trees and creepers as he moved on, moving about by his own will, passing through wood and roaring like Mātariśvan. (14-9-10)
मरुत्त उवाच॥

आश्चर्यमद्य पश्यामि रूपिणं वह्निमागतम्। आसनं सलिलं पाद्यं गां चोपानय वै मुने ॥१४-९-११॥
āścaryam adya paśyāmi rūpiṇaṁ vahnim āgatam। āsanaṁ salilaṁ pādyaṁ gāṁ copānaya vai mune॥14-9-11॥
[आश्चर्यम् (āścaryam) - wonder; astonishment; अद्य (adya) - today; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; रूपिणम् (rūpiṇam) - having a form; in form; वह्निम् (vahnim) - fire; आगतम् (āgatam) - has come; arrived; आसनम् (āsanam) - seat; सलिलम् (salilam) - water; पाद्यम् (pādyam) - water for feet; गाम् (gām) - cow; च (ca) - and; उपानय (upānaya) - bring near; fetch; वै (vai) - indeed; मुने (mune) - O sage;]
(Wonder today I see having a form fire has come. Seat, water, water for feet, cow and bring near indeed O sage.)
Today, I see a wonder—the fire has arrived in a visible form. O sage, indeed bring a seat, water, water for washing feet, and a cow. (14-9-11)
अग्निरुवाच॥

आसनं सलिलं पाद्यं प्रतिनन्दामि तेऽनघ। इन्द्रेण तु समादिष्टं विद्धि मां दूतमागतम् ॥१४-९-१२॥
āsanaṁ salilaṁ pādyaṁ pratinandāmi te'nagha। indreṇa tu samādiṣṭaṁ viddhi māṁ dūtamāgatam ॥14-9-12॥
[आसनम् (āsanam) - seat; सलिलम् (salilam) - water; पाद्यम् (pādyam) - water for washing feet; प्रतिनन्दामि (pratinandāmi) - I greet; ते (te) - to you; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one; इन्द्रेण (indreṇa) - by Indra; तु (tu) - but; समादिष्टम् (samādiṣṭam) - completely directed; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; माम् (mām) - me; दूतम् (dūtam) - messenger; आगतम् (āgatam) - arrived;]
(Seat, water, water for washing feet, I greet to you, O sinless one. By Indra but completely directed, know me, messenger arrived. (14-9-12))
O sinless one, I greet you with a seat, water, and water for washing your feet. But know me as a messenger who has come, completely directed by Indra. (14-9-12)
मरुत्त उवाच॥

कच्चिच्छ्रीमान्देवराजः सुखी च; कच्चिच्चास्मान्प्रीयते धूमकेतो। कच्चिद्देवाश्चास्य वशे यथाव; त्तद्ब्रूहि त्वं मम कार्त्स्न्येन देव ॥१४-९-१३॥
kaccicchrīmān devarājaḥ sukhī ca; kaccic cāsmān prīyate dhūmaketo. kaccid devāś cāsya vaśe yathāvat; tad brūhi tvaṃ mama kārtsnyena deva ॥14-9-13॥
[कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether; श्रीमान् (śrīmān) - prosperous; देवराजः (devarājaḥ) - king of the gods; सुखी (sukhī) - happy; च (ca) - and; कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether; च (ca) - and; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; प्रीयते (prīyate) - is pleased; धूमकेतुः (dhūmaketuḥ) - Dhūmaketu (an epithet of Soma or Agni); कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - by him; वशे (vaśe) - under control; यथावत् (yathāvat) - as is proper; तत् (tat) - that; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - speak; त्वम् (tvam) - you; मम (mama) - to me; कार्त्स्न्येन (kārtsnyena) - fully; देव (deva) - O god;]
(Whether the prosperous king of the gods is happy, and whether Dhūmaketu is pleased with us. Whether also the gods are under his control as is proper; that speak you to me fully, O god.)
Tell me fully, O god: Is the prosperous king of the gods happy? And is Dhūmaketu pleased with us? Are the gods under his authority as they should be? (14-9-13)

शक्रो भृशं सुसुखी पार्थिवेन्द्र; प्रीतिं चेच्छत्यजरां वै त्वया सः। देवाश्च सर्वे वशगास्तस्य राज; न्संदेशं त्वं शृणु मे देवराज्ञः ॥१४-९-१४॥
śakro bhṛśaṁ susukhī pārthivendra; prītiṁ cecchatyajarāṁ vai tvayā saḥ। devāś ca sarve vaśagās tasya rājan; saṁdeśaṁ tvaṁ śṛṇu me devarājñaḥ ॥14-9-14॥
[शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Indra; god-king; भृशं (bhṛśam) - greatly; intensely; सुसुखी (susukhī) - very happy; highly content; पार्थिवेन्द्र (pārthivendra) - O king of the earth; prince; प्रीतिं (prītim) - delight; love; चेत् (cet) - if; इच्छति (icchati) - desires; wishes; अजराम् (ajarām) - undecaying; imperishable; वै (vai) - indeed; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; सः (saḥ) - he; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; च (ca) - and; सर्वे (sarve) - all; वशगाः (vaśagāḥ) - under control; subject; तस्य (tasya) - of him; राजन् (rājan) - O king; संदेशम् (saṁdeśam) - message; त्वम् (tvam) - you; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; listen; मे (me) - my; देवराज्ञः (devarājñaḥ) - of the king of the gods;]
(Indra greatly very happy, O king of earth; delight if desires undecaying indeed by you he. The gods and all under control of him, O king; message you hear my of the king of the gods (14-9-14))
Indra, being greatly delighted, is very happy, O lord of kings; if you desire unaging happiness from him, all the gods are under his control, O king. Now hear the message I bring you from the lord of the gods. (14-9-14)
यदर्थं मां प्राहिणोत्त्वत्सकाशं; बृहस्पतिं परिदातुं मरुत्ते। अयं गुरुर्याजयिता नृप त्वां; मर्त्यं सन्तममरं त्वां करोतु ॥१४-९-१५॥
yadartham māṃ prāhiṇottvat-sakāśam; bṛhaspatiṃ paridātuṃ marutte. ayaṃ gurur-yājayitā nṛpa tvām; martyaṃ santam amaraṃ tvām karotu ॥14-9-15॥

(For which purpose me sent to your presence; Bṛhaspati to deliver O Marutta. This preceptor, sacrificial priest, O king, you; mortal being, immortal you, may he make.)
O Marutta, for the purpose for which I was sent to your presence—to deliver Bṛhaspati—this preceptor, the sacrificial priest, O king, may he make you, though mortal, into an immortal. (14-9-15)
मरुत्त उवाच॥

(Saṁvarta, this sacrificer, Brahmin of me; of Bṛhaspati offering joined palms, this of him. Not he, after having caused the god Mahendra to perform sacrifice; a mortal being causing to sacrifice today would be fitting.)
This Saṁvarta, my priest, is the sacrificer; this offering of joined palms is his to Bṛhaspati. He, having made great Indra the object of sacrifice, would not now shine by making a mortal perform sacrifice. (14-9-16)
अग्निरुवाच॥

ye vai lokā devaloke mahāntaḥ; samprāpsyase tān devarāja-prasādāt. tvāṁ ced asau yājayed vai bṛhaspatiḥ; nūnaṁ svargaṁ tvaṁ jayeḥ kīrtiyuktaḥ ॥14-9-17॥
[ये (ye) - those; वै (vai) - indeed; लोका (lokāḥ) - worlds; देवलोके (devaloke) - in the world of the gods; महान्तः (mahāntaḥ) - great; सम्प्राप्स्यसे (samprāpsyase) - you will attain; तान् (tān) - them; देवराजप्रसादात् (devarāja-prasādāt) - by the favor of the king of the gods; त्वां (tvām) - you; चेद् (ced) - if; असौ (asau) - he; याजयेत् (yājayet) - would cause to be sacrificed; वै (vai) - indeed; बृहस्पतिः (bṛhaspatiḥ) - Bṛhaspati; नूनं (nūnam) - certainly; स्वर्गम् (svargam) - heaven; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; जयेः (jayeḥ) - would conquer; कीर्तियुक्तः (kīrtiyuktaḥ) - endowed with fame;]
(Those indeed worlds in the world of the gods great; you will attain them by the favor of the king of the gods. You if he would cause to be sacrificed indeed Bṛhaspati; certainly heaven you would conquer, endowed with fame. (14-9-17))
Truly, those great worlds in the world of the gods—you will attain them by the grace of the king of the gods. If Bṛhaspati himself were to officiate your sacrifice, you would certainly conquer heaven, endowed with glory. (14-9-17)
तथा लोका मानुषा ये च दिव्याः; प्रजापतेश्चापि ये वै महान्तः। ते ते जिता देवराज्यं च कृत्स्नं; बृहस्पतिश्चेद्याजयेत्त्वां नरेन्द्र ॥१४-९-१८॥
tathā lokā mānuṣā ye ca divyāḥ; prajāpateścāpi ye vai mahāntaḥ. te te jitā devarājyaṃ ca kṛtsnaṃ; bṛhaspatiścedyājayet tvāṃ narendra ॥14-9-18॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; लोका (lokāḥ) - worlds; मानुषा (mānuṣāḥ) - human; ये (ye) - who; च (ca) - and; दिव्याः (divyāḥ) - divine; प्रजापतेः (prajāpateḥ) - of Prajāpati; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; ये (ye) - who; वै (vai) - indeed; महान्तः (mahāntaḥ) - great; ते (te) - they; ते (te) - they; जिता (jitāḥ) - conquered; देवराज्यं (devarājyam) - the kingdom of the gods; च (ca) - and; कृत्स्नं (kṛtsnam) - entire; बृहस्पतिः (bṛhaspatiḥ) - Bṛhaspati; चेद् (ced) - if; याजयेत् (yājayet) - should cause (to perform a sacrifice); त्वां (tvām) - you; नरेन्द्र (narendra) - O king;]
(Thus the worlds, human and those who are divine; and also those great ones of Prajāpati indeed— these, these are conquered, and the entire kingdom of the gods, if Bṛhaspati should cause you, O king, to perform a sacrifice.)
Thus, if Bṛhaspati causes you to perform a sacrifice, O king, even the worlds — human and divine — and the great ones of Prajāpati, as well as the entire kingdom of the gods, are conquered. (14-9-18)

(Do not thus you again come in any way to surrender Bṛhaspati to Marutta. Let me not burn you with (my) harsh eye—enraged I am, O Pāvaka—know that.)
Do not, in this way, come again, in any manner, to surrender Bṛhaspati to Marutta. Let me not burn you with my harsh gaze; I am enraged, O Pāvaka—remember that. (14-9-19)

tato devānagamaddhūmaketuḥ; dāhādbhīto vyathito'śvatthaparṇavat. taṃ vai dṛṣṭvā prāha śakro mahātmā; bṛhaspateḥ saṃnidhau havyavāham ॥14-9-20॥

(Then Dhūmaketu, having approached the gods, frightened from heat, disturbed like a leaf of the aśvattha tree; him indeed having seen, Śakra, the great-souled one, spoke to Havyavāha in the presence of Bṛhaspati.)
Then Dhūmaketu (Agni), terrified by the heat and shaken like a leaf of the aśvattha tree, went to the gods; seeing him, Śakra (Indra), the great-souled one, spoke to Havyavāha (Agni) in the presence of Bṛhaspati. (14-9-20)
यत्त्वं गतः प्रहितो जातवेदो; बृहस्पतिं परिदातुं मरुत्ते। तत्किं प्राह स नृपो यक्ष्यमाणः; कच्चिद्वचः प्रतिगृह्णाति तच्च ॥१४-९-२१॥
yat tvaṃ gataḥ prahito jātavedo; bṛhaspatiṃ paridātuṃ marutte. tat kiṃ prāha sa nṛpo yakṣyamāṇaḥ; kaccid vacaḥ pratigṛhṇāti tac ca ॥14-9-21॥

(That which you, sent, went, O Jātavedas, to cause Bṛhaspati to give to Marutta. Then, what did that king about to sacrifice speak? Whether he accepts that word and (it)?)
Since you, O Jātavedas, having been sent, went to Bṛhaspati so he would grant (something) to Marutta, what did that sacrificing king say? Did he accept that word?

na te vācaṃ rocate marutto; bṛhaspaterañjaliṃ prāhiṇotsaḥ। saṃvarto māṃ yājayitetya-bhīkṣṇaṃ; punaḥ punaḥ sa mayā procyamānaḥ ॥14-9-22॥

(Not to you the word pleases, Marutta; of Bṛhaspati the offering he sent. Saṃvarta me to officiate thus repeatedly; again and again, he, by me, being addressed.)
Marutta, the word does not please you; he sent the offering of Bṛhaspati. Saṃvarta kept telling me again and again to have him officiate the sacrifice. (14-9-22)
उवाचेदं मानुषा ये च दिव्याः; प्रजापतेर्ये च लोका महान्तः। तांश्चेल्लभेयं संविदं तेन कृत्वा; तथापि नेच्छेयमिति प्रतीतः ॥१४-९-२३॥
uvācedaṃ mānuṣā ye ca divyāḥ; prajāpater ye ca lokā mahāntaḥ. tāṃś cel labheyaṃ saṃvidaṃ tena kṛtvā; tathāpi neccheyam iti pratītaḥ ॥14-9-23॥

(Said this: humans, also who are divine; of Prajāpati, also the worlds great; those, if I should obtain, relationship by that having made; even then, would not wish, thus, known.)
He said this: 'Even if I were to obtain both the human and divine (worlds), and all the great worlds of Prajāpati, having attained relationship with them, still I would not wish for it'—thus he is known. (14-9-23)

punarbhavān pārthivaṃ taṃ sametya; vākyaṃ madīyaṃ prāpaya svārthayuktam। punaryadyukto na kariṣyate vaca; stato vajraṃ samprahartāsmi tasmai ॥14-9-24॥
[पुनः (punar) - again; भवान् (bhavān) - you (respectful); पार्थिवम् (pārthivam) - the king; तं (taṃ) - him; समेत्य (sametya) - having approached; वाक्यम् (vākyaṃ) - the statement; मदीयम् (madīyaṃ) - my; प्रापय (prāpaya) - convey; स्वार्थयुक्तम् (svārthayuktam) - endowed with his own interest; पुनः (punar) - again; यदि (yadi) - if; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - willing; न (na) - not; करिष्यते (kariṣyate) - he will do; वचः (vacaḥ) - the word; सतः (stataḥ) - then; वज्रम् (vajram) - thunderbolt; सम्प्रहर्तास्मि (samprahartāsmi) - I will hurl; तस्मै (tasmai) - at him;]
(Again you, having approached that king, convey my statement endowed with his own interest. Again, if willing he will not do the word, then I will hurl the thunderbolt at him.)
Go to that king again and deliver my message, which aligns with his own interests. If he still does not comply with my words, then I shall strike him with the thunderbolt. (14-9-24)

gandharvarājād yātv ayaṁ tatra dūtaḥ; bibhemy ahaṁ vāsava tatra gantum। saṁrabdho mām abravīt tīkṣṇaroṣaḥ; saṁvarto vākyaṁ caritabrahmacaryaḥ ॥14-9-25॥
[गन्धर्वराड्यात् (gandharvarājāt) - from the king of the Gandharvas; यातु (yātu) - let go; अयम् (ayam) - this; तत्र (tatra) - there; दूतः (dūtaḥ) - messenger; बिभेमि (bibhemi) - I fear; अहम् (aham) - I; वासव (vāsava) - O Vāsava (Indra); तत्र (tatra) - there; गन्तुम् (gantum) - to go; संरब्धः (saṁrabdhaḥ) - angry; माम् (mām) - me; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; तीक्ष्णरोषः (tīkṣṇaroṣaḥ) - with sharp anger; संवर्तः (saṁvartaḥ) - Saṁvarta (proper name); वाक्यम् (vākyaṁ) - word; चरितब्रह्मचर्यः (caritabrahmacaryaḥ) - who has practiced brahmacarya (celibacy);]
(From the king of the Gandharvas let this messenger go there; I fear, O Vāsava, to go there. Angry, with sharp anger, Saṁvarta, who has practiced brahmacarya, said this word to me.)
Let this messenger go there from the king of the Gandharvas; O Vāsava, I am afraid to go there. Saṁvarta, full of intense anger and firm in celibacy, angrily spoke these words to me. (14-9-25)
यद्यागच्छेः पुनरेवं कथं चि; द्बृहस्पतिं परिदातुं मरुत्ते। दहेयं त्वां चक्षुषा दारुणेन; सङ्क्रुद्ध इत्येतदवैहि शक्र ॥१४-९-२६॥
yady āgaccheḥ punar evaṃ kathaṃ ci; bṛhaspatiṃ paridātuṃ marutte. daheyaṃ tvāṃ cakṣuṣā dāruṇena; saṅkruddha ity etad avaihi śakra ॥14-9-26॥

(If you come again in this way to give Bṛhaspati to Marutta, I would burn you with (my) terrible eye, highly enraged—thus, know this, O Śakra.)
O Śakra, know this: If you come again in this manner to deliver Bṛhaspati to Marutta, I, being highly enraged, would burn you with my terrible gaze. (14-9-26)

tvam evānyān dahase jātavedo; na hi tvad anyo vidyate bhasmakartā. tvat-saṁsparśāt sarvaloko bibhe; ty aśraddheyaṁ vadase havyavāha ॥14-9-27॥
[त्वम् एव (tvam eva) - you indeed; अन्यान् (anyān) - others; दहसे (dahase) - burn; जातवेदः (jātavedah) - O Jātavedas (Agni, one who knows all births); न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; त्वत् (tvat) - than you; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - other; विद्यते (vidyate) - is found; भस्मकर्ता (bhasma-kartā) - maker of ashes; त्वत्-संस्पर्शात् (tvat-saṁsparśāt) - by your contact; सर्व-लोकः (sarva-lokaḥ) - all the world; बिभेति (bibheti) - fears; अश्रद्धेयं (aśraddheyam) - hard to believe; वदसे (vadase) - you say; हव्यवाह (havyavāha) - O carrier of oblations (Agni);]
(You indeed others burn, O Jātavedas; not indeed than you other is found maker of ashes. By your contact all the world fears; this hard to believe you say, O carrier of oblations.)
O Jātavedas, you alone burn others; indeed, there is no other maker of ashes besides you. By your touch, all beings are afraid; that you say this is hard to believe, O havyavāha (Agni). (14-9-27)

divaṃ devendra pṛthivīṃ caiva sarvāṃ; saṃveṣṭayestvaṃ svabalenaiva śakra. evaṃ-vidhasyeha satastavāsau; kathaṃ vṛtrastridivaṃ prāg jahāra ॥14-9-28॥
[दिवं (divaṃ) - the heaven; देवेन्द्र (devendra) - O Indra of the gods; पृथिवीं (pṛthivīṃ) - the earth; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - truly; सर्वां (sarvāṃ) - all (entire); संवेष्टयेः (saṃveṣṭayeḥ) - you could envelop; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; स्वबलेन (svabalena) - by your own strength; एव (eva) - indeed; शक्र (śakra) - O Śakra; एवंविधस्य (evaṃ-vidhasya) - of such (as this) sort; इह (iha) - here; सतः (sataḥ) - of the existing (you); तव (tava) - of yours; असौ (asau) - that (Vṛtra); कथं (kathaṃ) - how; वृत्र (vṛtra) - Vṛtra; त्रिदिवं (tridivaṃ) - the celestial world; प्राग् (prāg) - before; जहार (jahāra) - did take away;]
(Heaven, O Indra of the gods, the earth and truly all (entire), you could envelop, you by your own strength indeed, O Śakra. Of such a one as you here existing, of yours, that (Vṛtra), how, Vṛtra, the celestial world, before, did take away.)
O Indra of the gods, O Śakra, you could envelop heaven, the entire earth and all, by your own strength indeed. Of you, being such here, how then did that Vṛtra previously seize the celestial world? (14-9-28)

na caṇḍikā jaṅgamā no kareṇu; ṛn vārisomaṃ prapibāmi vahne. na durbale vai visṛjāmi vajraṃ; ko me'sukhāya praharen manuṣyaḥ ॥14-9-29॥

(Not Caṇḍikā, a moving being, we female elephants; nor debt, water-mixed soma do I drink, O Fire. Not against the weak indeed do I hurl the thunderbolt; who would strike me for pain, a man?)
I am not Caṇḍikā nor a moving female elephant; I do not drink watered-down soma as a debt, O Fire. I do not hurl the thunderbolt at the weak; who among men would strike me to cause pain? (14-9-29)
प्रव्राजयेयं कालकेयान्पृथिव्या; मपाकर्षं दानवानन्तरिक्षात्। दिवः प्रह्रादमवसानमानयं; को मेऽसुखाय प्रहरेत मर्त्यः ॥१४-९-३०॥
pravrājayeyam kālakeyān pṛthivyā; mapākarṣaṃ dānavān antarikṣāt. divaḥ prahrādam avasānam ānayaṃ; ko me 'sukhāya praharet martyaḥ ॥14-9-30॥

(I would drive away the Kālakeyas from the earth; I would drag off the Dānavas from the mid-air. From heaven, I would bring the end (of) Prahrāda; who among mortals would strike me for harm? (14-9-30))
I could expel the Kālakeyas from the earth, drag the Dānavas out of the sky, and even bring about the downfall of Prahrāda from heaven; who among mortals could possibly attack me to cause harm? (14-9-30)

यत्र शर्यातिं च्यवनो याजयिष्य; न्सहाश्विभ्यां सोममगृह्णदेकः। तं त्वं क्रुद्धः प्रत्यषेधीः पुरस्ता; च्छर्यातियज्ञं स्मर तं महेन्द्र ॥१४-९-३१॥
yatra śaryātiṃ cyavano yājayiṣya; nsahāśvibhyāṃ somamagṛhṇadekaḥ। taṃ tvaṃ kruddhaḥ pratyaṣedhīḥ purastā; ccharyātiyajñaṃ smara taṃ mahendra ॥14-9-31॥

(Where Cyavana was about to cause Śaryāti to sacrifice, with the Aśvins (he) alone seized the Soma. Him, you, being angry, forbade previously. Remember that Śaryāti's sacrifice, O great Indra (14-9-31))
Recall, O great Indra, how Cyavana was about to have Śaryāti perform a sacrifice, and, with the Aśvins, alone took the Soma. You, angered, forbade him in the past. Remember that Śaryāti's sacrifice (14-9-31)
वज्रं गृहीत्वा च पुरंदर त्वं; सम्प्राहार्षीश्च्यवनस्यातिघोरम्। स ते विप्रः सह वज्रेण बाहु; मपागृह्णात्तपसा जातमन्युः ॥१४-९-३२॥
vajraṃ gṛhītvā ca puraṃdara tvaṃ; samprāharṣīś cyavanasya atighoram. sa te vipraḥ saha vajreṇa bāhum apāgṛhṇāt tapasā jātamanyuḥ ॥14-9-32॥

(Having taken the thunderbolt, and you, O Indra, struck the very fierce (Cyavana). He, the sage, your arm together with the thunderbolt removed, by ascetic power, having become angry.)
Having seized the thunderbolt, O Indra, you struck the very fierce Cyavana. But that sage, becoming enraged through ascetic power, removed your arm along with the thunderbolt. (14-9-32)
ततो रोषात्सर्वतो घोररूपं; सपत्नं ते जनयामास भूयः। मदं नामासुरं विश्वरूपं; यं त्वं दृष्ट्वा चक्षुषी संन्यमीलः ॥१४-९-३३॥
tato roṣātsarvato ghorarūpaṃ; sapatnaṃ te janayāmāsa bhūyaḥ. madaṃ nāmāsuraṃ viśvarūpaṃ; yaṃ tvaṃ dṛṣṭvā cakṣuṣī saṃnyamīlaḥ ॥14-9-33॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; रोषात् (roṣāt) - from anger; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - on all sides; घोररूपं (ghorarūpaṃ) - terrible form; सपत्नं (sapatnaṃ) - rival; ते (te) - for you; जनयामास (janayāmāsa) - produced; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; मदं (madaṃ) - Mada; नाम (nāma) - by name; असुरं (asuraṃ) - demon; विश्वरूपं (viśvarūpaṃ) - having universal form; यं (yaṃ) - whom; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; चक्षुषी (cakṣuṣī) - (your) eyes; संन्यमीलः (saṃnyamīlaḥ) - you closed;]
(Then from anger on all sides the terrible form, a rival for you, again she produced; Mada by name, a demon with universal form; whom you, having seen, closed (your) eyes.)
Then, overwhelmed by anger, she again produced for you a terrible form on all sides—a rival, named Mada, a demon of universal form, whom, when you beheld, you closed your eyes. (14-9-33)
हनुरेका जगतीस्था तथैका; दिवं गता महतो दानवस्य। सहस्रं दन्तानां शतयोजनानां; सुतीक्ष्णानां घोररूपं बभूव ॥१४-९-३४॥
hanurekā jagatīsthā tathaikā; divaṃ gatā mahato dānavasya. sahasraṃ dantānāṃ śatayojanānāṃ; sutīkṣṇānāṃ ghorarūpaṃ babhūva ॥14-9-34॥
[हनुःएका (hanuḥ-ekā) - one jaw; जगतीस्था (jagatī-sthā) - resting on the earth; तथा एका (tathā ekā) - similarly the other one; दिवं गता (divaṃ gatā) - reached the sky; महतः (mahataḥ) - of the great; दानवस्य (dānavasya) - of demon; सहस्रं (sahasraṃ) - a thousand; दन्तानां (dantānāṃ) - of teeth; शतयोजनानां (śata-yojanānāṃ) - each a hundred yojanas in length; सुतीक्ष्णानां (sutīkṣṇānāṃ) - very sharp; घोररूपं (ghorarūpam) - terrifying in form; बभूव (babhūva) - was;]
(One jaw resting on the earth, and similarly the other one reached the sky; of the great demon, there were a thousand teeth, each a hundred yojanas in length, very sharp, terrifying in form, was.)

वृत्ताः स्थूला रजतस्तम्भवर्णा; दंष्ट्राश्चतस्रो द्वे शते योजनानाम्। स त्वां दन्तान्विदशन्नभ्यधाव; ज्जिघांसया शूलमुद्यम्य घोरम् ॥१४-९-३५॥
vṛttāḥ sthūlā rajata-stambha-varṇā; daṃṣṭrāś catasro dve śate yojanānām। sa tvāṃ dantān vidaśan abhyadhāvat; jighāṃsayā śūlam udyamya ghoram ॥14-9-35॥
[वृत्ताः (vṛttāḥ) - round; स्थूला (sthūlā) - thick; रजतस्तम्भवर्णा (rajata-stambha-varṇā) - silver-pillar-colored; दंष्ट्राः (daṃṣṭrāḥ) - fangs; चतस्रो (catasro) - four; द्वे (dve) - two; शते (śate) - hundred; योजनानाम् (yojanānām) - of yojanas (distance measure); सः (saḥ) - he; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; दन्तान् (dantān) - teeth; विदशन् (vidaśan) - gnashing; अभ्यधावत् (abhyadhāvat) - rushed at; जिघांसया (jighāṃsayā) - with the intention to kill; शूलम् (śūlam) - spear; उद्यम्य (ud-yamya) - holding up; घोरम् (ghoram) - terrible;]
(Round, thick, silver-pillar-colored; four fangs, two hundred of yojanas; he, at you, teeth gnashing, rushed at; with the intention to kill, terrible spear holding up.)

अपश्यस्त्वं तं तदा घोररूपं; सर्वे त्वन्ये ददृशुर्दर्शनीयम्। यस्माद्भीतः प्राञ्जलिस्त्वं महर्षि; मागच्छेथाः शरणं दानवघ्न ॥१४-९-३६॥
apaśyastvaṃ taṃ tadā ghorarūpaṃ; sarve tvanvye dadṛśurdarśanīyam. yasmādbhītaḥ prāñjalistvaṃ maharṣi; māgacchethāḥ śaraṇaṃ dānavaghna ॥14-9-36॥
[अपश्यः (apaśyaḥ) - did not see; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; तं (taṃ) - him; तदा (tadā) - then; घोररूपं (ghorarūpaṃ) - terrible form; सर्वे (sarve) - all; त्वन्ये (tvan-ye) - all others; ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - saw; दर्शनीयम् (darśanīyam) - beautiful; यस्मात् (yasmāt) - because; भीतः (bhītaḥ) - frightened; प्राञ्जलि (prāñjali) - with folded hands; स्त्वं (stvaṃ (saḥ + tvaṃ)) - you; महर्षि (maharṣi) - O great sage; मागच्छेथाः (māgacchethāḥ) - do not come; शरणं (śaraṇaṃ) - to shelter; दानवघ्न (dānavaghna) - O slayer of demons;]
(You did not see him then in terrible form; all others saw (him) as beautiful. Because (you were) frightened, with folded hands, you, O great sage, do not come for shelter, O slayer of demons (14-9-36))
At that time, you did not see him in his terrible form; all the others saw (him) as beautiful. Frightened, with folded hands, you, O great sage, sought shelter from the destroyer of demons. (14-9-36)
क्षत्रादेवं ब्रह्मबलं गरीयो; न ब्रह्मतः किञ्चिदन्यद्गरीयः। सोऽहं जानन्ब्रह्मतेजो यथाव; न्न संवर्तं गन्तुमिच्छामि शक्र ॥१४-९-३७॥
kṣatrādevaṃ brahmabalaṃ garīyo; na brahmataḥ kiñcidanyadgarīyaḥ. so'haṃ jānanbrahmatejo yathāva; nna saṃvartaṃ gantumicchāmi śakra ॥14-9-37॥
[क्षत्रात् (kṣatrāt) - from the kṣatriya; एवम् (evam) - thus; ब्रह्मबलम् (brahmabalam) - the power of brahman; गरीयः (garīyaḥ) - greater; न (na) - not; ब्रह्मतः (brahmataḥ) - than brahman; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; अन्यत् (anyat) - other; गरीयः (garīyaḥ) - greater; सः (saḥ) - he; अहम् (aham) - I; जानन् (jānan) - knowing; ब्रह्मतेजः (brahmatejaḥ) - the brilliance of brahman; यथावत् (yathāvat) - as it is; न (na) - not; संवर्तम् (saṃvartaṃ) - dissolution; गन्तुम् (gantum) - to go; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I desire; शक्र (śakra) - O Śakra;]
(From the kṣatriya thus (is) the power of brahman greater; not than brahman is anything else greater. He I, knowing the brilliance of brahman as it is, do not wish to go to dissolution, O Śakra (Indra).)
The power of brahman is indeed greater than that of the kṣatriya; nothing is greater than brahman. Therefore, knowing the true brilliance of brahman, I do not wish to proceed towards dissolution, O Śakra (Indra). (14-9-37)
