Entering Hastinapura;
Vaiśampāyana said.
Thus, by many kinds of words from those sages rich in austerity, the royal sage Yudhiṣṭhira, whose relatives were slain, regained his composure. (14-14-1)
He was urged by the illustrious, widely-famed Dvaipāyana Kṛṣṇa himself and by the abode of the gods, and thus was overpowered. (14-14-2)
The king was (attended) by Nārada, then by Bhīma, by Nakula and by others; as well as by Kṛṣṇā, Sahadeva, Vijaya, and the wise one. (14-14-3)
With the help of other powerful men and Brāhmaṇas with knowledge of the scriptures, he cast off the suffering and mental pain born of grief. (14-14-4)
Yudhiṣṭhira honored the gods and the brāhmaṇas, and after performing the funeral rites for his relatives, that virtuous king once again ruled over the earth surrounded by the ocean. (14-14-5)
With a tranquil mind, the Kaurava, having attained his own kingdom, the king addressed Vyāsa, Nārada, and others. (14-14-6)
I have been reassured by you, the elders and foremost of sages; not even the slightest fault exists here for me. (14-14-7)
A very great purpose has been obtained, by which I will worship the deities. Honoring you here, we shall convene the sacrifice. (14-14-8)
O ancestor, protected by you, we shall go to the Himalaya. That region, O best among the twice-born, is indeed said to be full of many wonders. (14-14-9)
Thus, the venerable sage Nārada has spoken much about the wonderful and auspicious (subject), indeed, also at the divine shrine. (14-14-10)
A person who is without ancestral fortune, even having teachers of this kind and friends approved by the virtuous, attains only misfortune. (14-14-11)
Thus, after being addressed by the king, all the great sages—and both Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna—took leave of the king, and, as everyone was watching, there itself they disappeared. (14-14-12)
Then Dharmasuta, the king and lord, sat right there. Thus, not a very long time passed for them. (14-14-13)
At the time of Bhīṣma’s death, while the purificatory and funerary rites were being performed, great gifts were given to the Brāhmaṇas. (14-14-14)
O Kurunandana, along with Dhṛtarāṣṭra, offered the funeral rites for the Kurus headed by Bhīṣma and Karṇa. (14-14-15)
Then, after giving much wealth to the Brāhmaṇas, the foremost of the Pāṇḍavas, placing Dhṛtarāṣṭra at the front, entered Hastināpura. (14-14-16)
He consoled his father, the wise and lordly one, and then that righteous soul ruled the earth together with his brothers. (14-14-17)
