(They two sported with delight, united, in heaven like the two lords of the gods; those two upon the slopes of the mountains and in the variegated forests.)
The two of them, united and filled with delight, sported on the mountain slopes and in the wondrous forests, just as the two lords of the gods do in heaven. (14-15-3)
शैलेषु रमणीयेषु पल्वलेषु नदीषु च। चङ्क्रम्यमाणौ संहृष्टावश्विनाविव नन्दने ॥१४-१५-४॥
śailēṣu ramaṇīyēṣu palavalēṣu nadīṣu ca। caṅkramyamāṇau saṁhṛṣṭāvaśvināviva nandanē॥14-15-4॥

पुत्रशोकाभिसन्तप्तं ज्ञातीनां च सहस्रशः। कथाभिः शमयामास पार्थं शौरिर्जनार्दनः ॥१४-१५-९॥
putraśokābhisantaptaṃ jñātīnāṃ ca sahasraśaḥ| kathābhiḥ śamayāmāsa pārthaṃ śaurirjanārdanaḥ ॥14-15-9॥

(Śauri Janārdana pacified Pārtha, who was afflicted by sorrow for his son and (for) the kinsmen by the thousands, by stories.)

स तमाश्वास्य विधिवद्विधानज्ञो महातपाः। अपहृत्यात्मनो भारं विशश्रामेव सात्वतः ॥१४-१५-१०॥
sa tam āśvāsya vidhivad-vidhānajñaḥ mahātapāḥ। apahṛtyātmanaḥ bhāraṃ viśaśrāmeva sātvataḥ ॥14-15-10॥
[स (sa) - he; तम् (tam) - him; आश्वास्य (āśvāsya) - having consoled; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - properly; विधानज्ञः (vidhānajñaḥ) - knower of ritual; महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - of great austerity; अपहृत्य (apahṛtya) - having removed; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of himself; भारम् (bhāram) - burden; विशश्राम् (viśaśrām) - he rested; इव (iva) - as if; सात्वतः (sātvataḥ) - of the Sātvata (lineage);]
(He, having consoled him properly, the knower of ritual, of great austerity, having removed the burden from himself, he rested as if he were of the Sātvata (lineage).)
Having properly consoled him, the great ascetic who knew the rituals, removed the burden from himself and, as if a Sātvata, took rest. (14-15-10)
ततः कथान्ते गोविन्दो गुडाकेशमुवाच ह। सान्त्वयञ्श्लक्ष्णया वाचा हेतुयुक्तमिदं वचः ॥१४-१५-११॥
tataḥ kathānte govindo guḍākeśam uvāca ha। sāntvayañ ślakṣṇayā vācā hetuyuktam idaṃ vacaḥ ॥14-15-11॥

विजितेयं धरा कृत्स्ना सव्यसाचिन्परन्तप। त्वद्बाहुबलमाश्रित्य राज्ञा धर्मसुतेन ह ॥१४-१५-१२॥
vijiteyaṁ dharā kṛtsnā savyasācinparantapa। tvadbāhubalamāśritya rājñā dharmasuten a ha ॥14-15-12॥

(Conquered is this entire earth, O Savyasācin, O scorcher of foes; by the king, the son of Dharma, indeed, relying upon your strength of arm.)
O Savyasācin, O scorcher of foes! This entire earth has indeed been conquered by the king, the son of Dharma, by relying upon your strength of arm. (14-15-12)
असपत्नां महीं भुङ्क्ते धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः। भीमसेनप्रभावेन यमयोश्च नरोत्तम ॥१४-१५-१३॥
asapatnāṃ mahīṃ bhuṅkte dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। bhīmasenaprabhāvena yamayoś ca narottama ॥14-15-13॥

King Yudhishthira, son of Dharma, enjoys the earth without a rival, owing to the power of Bhimasena and the twins, O best of men. (14-15-13)
धर्मेण राज्ञा धर्मज्ञ प्राप्तं राज्यमकण्टकम्। धर्मेण निहतः सङ्ख्ये स च राजा सुयोधनः ॥१४-१५-१४॥
dharmeṇa rājñā dharmajña prāptaṃ rājyam akaṇṭakam। dharmeṇa nihataḥ saṅkhye sa ca rājā suyodhanaḥ ॥14-15-14॥
[धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - by dharma; राज्ञा (rājñā) - by the king; धर्मज्ञ (dharmajña) - knower of dharma; प्राप्तं (prāptaṃ) - obtained; राज्यमकण्टकम् (rājyam akaṇṭakam) - kingdom free from thorns; धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - by dharma; निहतः (nihataḥ) - slain; सङ्ख्ये (saṅkhye) - in battle; स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; राजा (rājā) - king; सुयोधनः (suyodhanaḥ) - Suyodhana;]
(By dharma, by the king knowing dharma, the kingdom free from thorns was obtained. By dharma, slain in battle, he and the king Suyodhana.)
The kingdom free from obstacles was obtained by the king who knows dharma. Through dharma, Suyodhana and that king were slain in battle. (14-15-14)
अधर्मरुचयो लुब्धाः सदा चाप्रियवादिनः। धार्तराष्ट्रा दुरात्मानः सानुबन्धा निपातिताः ॥१४-१५-१५॥
adharmarucayo lubdhāḥ sadā cāpriyavādinaḥ. dhārtarāṣṭrā durātmānaḥ sānubandhā nipātitāḥ ॥14-15-15॥
[अधर्मरुचयः (adharmarucayaḥ) - those fond of unrighteousness; लुब्धाः (lubdhāḥ) - greedy ones; सदा (sadā) - always; च (ca) - and; अप्रियवादिनः (apriyavādinaḥ) - speakers of unpleasant words; धार्तराष्ट्राः (dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ) - Dhritarashtra's sons; दुरात्मानः (durātmānaḥ) - wicked-minded; सअनुबन्धाः (sānubandhāḥ) - with their associates; निपातिताः (nipātitāḥ) - were destroyed;]
(Those fond of unrighteousness, greedy ones, always and speakers of unpleasant words—Dhritarashtra's sons, wicked-minded, with their associates, were destroyed.)

प्रशान्तामखिलां पार्थ पृथिवीं पृथिवीपतिः। भुङ्क्ते धर्मसुतो राजा त्वया गुप्तः कुरूद्वह ॥१४-१५-१६॥

(The pacified, entire earth, O Pārtha, the lord of the earth, enjoys, the son of Dharma, the king, by you protected, O best of the Kurus.)
O Pārtha, the king, son of Dharma, protected by you, enjoys the entire pacified earth, O best of the Kurus. (14-15-16)
रमे चाहं त्वया सार्धमरण्येष्वपि पाण्डव। किमु यत्र जनोऽयं वै पृथा चामित्रकर्शन ॥१४-१५-१७॥
rame cāhaṁ tvayā sārdham araṇyeṣv api pāṇḍava। kimu yatra jano'yaṁ vai pṛthā cāmitrakarśana ॥14-15-17॥
[रमे (rame) - I delight; च (ca) - and; अहम् (aham) - I; त्वया (tvayā) - with you; सार्धम् (sārdham) - together; अरण्येषु (araṇyeṣu) - in forests; अपि (api) - even; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - O Pāṇḍava; किमु (kimu) - how much more; यत्र (yatra) - where; जनः (janaḥ) - people; अयम् (ayam) - this; वै (vai) - certainly; पृथा (pṛthā) - Pṛthā; च (ca) - and; अमित्रकर्शन (amitrakarśana) - O tormentor of enemies;]
(I delight, and I, with you, together, even in forests, O Pāṇḍava; how much more where people, this, certainly, Pṛthā and O tormentor of enemies.)
O Pāṇḍava, I delight together with you even in the forests; how much more would I, where there are people, Pṛthā, and you, O tormentor of enemies? (14-15-17)
यत्र धर्मसुतो राजा यत्र भीमो महाबलः। यत्र माद्रवतीपुत्रौ रतिस्तत्र परा मम ॥१४-१५-१८॥
yatra dharmasuto rājā yatra bhīmo mahābalaḥ। yatra mādravatīputrau ratis tatra parā mama॥14-15-18॥

(Where the son of Dharma is king, where Bhima of great strength is, where the two sons of Mādravatī are, there is my supreme delight.)
Where Yudhishthira is king, where mighty Bhima is, and where the sons of Mādravatī are, there is my greatest joy. (14-15-18)
तथैव स्वर्गकल्पेषु सभोद्देशेषु भारत। रमणीयेषु पुण्येषु सहितस्य त्वयानघ ॥१४-१५-१९॥
tathaiva svargakalpeṣu sabhoddeśeṣu bhārata। ramaṇīyeṣu puṇyeṣu sahitasya tvayānagha ॥14-15-19॥

(Just so, in those resembling heaven, in the assembly places, O Bhārata, in delightful, sacred (places), of one accompanied by you, O sinless one (14-15-19))

कालो महांस्त्वतीतो मे शूरपुत्रमपश्यतः। बलदेवं च कौरव्य तथान्यान्वृष्णिपुङ्गवान् ॥१४-१५-२०॥

(Time, great, truly has passed from me not seeing the son of Śūra, Baladeva and, O descendant of Kuru, also other leading Vrishnis.)
O descendant of Kuru, a great time has truly passed since I have not seen the son of Śūra, Baladeva, and the other foremost Vrishnis. (14-15-20)
सोऽहं गन्तुमभीप्सामि पुरीं द्वारवतीं प्रति। रोचतां गमनं मह्यं तवापि पुरुषर्षभ ॥१४-१५-२१॥
so'ham gantumabhipsāmi purīṃ dvāravatīṃ prati। rocatāṃ gamanaṃ mahyaṃ tavāpi puruṣarṣabha ॥14-15-21॥

(Addressed in many ways was the king, here and there, Yudhiṣṭhira—he indeed by Bhīṣma, what was appropriate by us in the sorrow-produced (situation).)

शिष्टो युधिष्ठिरोऽस्माभिः शास्ता सन्नपि पाण्डवः। तेन तच्च वचः सम्यग्गृहीतं सुमहात्मना ॥१४-१५-२३॥
śiṣṭo yudhiṣṭhiro'smābhiḥ śāstā sann api pāṇḍavaḥ. tena tac ca vacaḥ samyag-gṛhītaṃ sumahātmanā ॥14-15-23॥

धर्मपुत्रे हि धर्मज्ञे कृतज्ञे सत्यवादिनि। सत्यं धर्मो मतिश्चाग्र्या स्थितिश्च सततं स्थिरा ॥१४-१५-२४॥
dharmaputre hi dharmajñe kṛtajñe satyavādini। satyaṁ dharmo matiścāgryā sthitiśca satataṁ sthirā॥14-15-24॥

(In Dharmaputra, indeed, knower of dharma, grateful, speaker of truth, truth, righteousness, thought is excellent, and firmness always is steady.)
Indeed, in Dharmaputra, who knows dharma, is grateful, and speaks the truth, truthfulness, righteousness, excellent thought, and unwavering firmness are always present. (14-15-24)
तद्गत्वा तं महात्मानं यदि ते रोचतेऽर्जुन। अस्मद्गमनसंयुक्तं वचो ब्रूहि जनाधिपम् ॥१४-१५-२५॥
tad gatvā taṁ mahātmānaṁ yadi te rocate 'rjuna। asmad-gamana-saṁyuktaṁ vaco brūhi janādhipam ॥14-15-25॥
[तद् (tad) - then; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; तं (taṁ) - him; महात्मानम् (mahātmānam) - great-souled; यदि (yadi) - if; ते (te) - to you; रोचते (rocate) - is agreeable; अर्जुन (arjuna) - Arjuna; अस्मत् (asmat) - our; गमन (gamana) - going; संयुक्तम् (saṁyuktam) - connected; वचः (vacaḥ) - word; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - speak; जनाधिपम् (janādhipam) - king;]
(Then, having gone to that great-souled one, if it is agreeable to you, Arjuna, speak to the king the word connected with our going.)
Then, having gone to that great-souled one, if you approve, Arjuna, convey to the king our intention to depart. (14-15-25)
न हि तस्याप्रियं कुर्यां प्राणत्यागेऽप्युपस्थिते। कुतो गन्तुं महाबाहो पुरीं द्वारवतीं प्रति ॥१४-१५-२६॥
na hi tasyāpriyaṃ kuryāṃ prāṇatyāge'pyupasthite. kuto gantuṃ mahābāho purīṃ dvāravatīṃ prati ॥14-15-26॥

(Not indeed his unpleasing thing would I do, in (the event of) giving up life even being present. How then to go, O mighty-armed, to the city Dvaravati towards?)
For I would not do anything displeasing to him, even if surrendering my life were at hand. How then, O mighty-armed one, could I go toward the city of Dvaravati? (14-15-26)
सर्वं त्विदमहं पार्थ त्वत्प्रीतिहितकाम्यया। ब्रवीमि सत्यं कौरव्य न मिथ्यैतत्कथञ्चन ॥१४-१५-२७॥
sarvaṃ tvidam ahaṃ pārtha tvat-prīti-hita-kāmyayā। bravīmi satyaṃ kauravya na mithyaitat kathaṃcana ॥14-15-27॥

(All but this I, O Pārtha, by desire for your pleasure and welfare, speak; truth, O Kauravya; not false is this in any way.)
All this, O Pārtha, I truly speak out of desire for your pleasure and welfare; O Kauravya, this is not in any way false. (14-15-27)
प्रयोजनं च निर्वृत्तमिह वासे ममार्जुन। धार्तराष्ट्रो हतो राजा सबलः सपदानुगः ॥१४-१५-२८॥
prayojanaṃ ca nirvṛttam iha vāse mama arjuna। dhārtarāṣṭraḥ hataḥ rājā sabalaḥ sapadānugaḥ॥14-15-28॥

(Earth and under the control, O dear one, of the son of Dharma, wise; remained, having the ocean as a garment, with mountains, forests, and groves. Heaped with jewels of many kinds, of the king of the Kurus, O Pāṇḍava.)
O Pāṇḍava, the earth, ruled by the wise son of Dharma, remained beneath his control, adorned with oceans as her garment and with mountains, forests, and groves. It was decked with many kinds of jewels by the king of the Kurus. (14-15-29)
धर्मेण राजा धर्मज्ञः पातु सर्वां वसुन्धराम्। उपास्यमानो बहुभिः सिद्धैश्चापि महात्मभिः ॥ स्तूयमानश्च सततं बन्दिभिर्भरतर्षभ ॥१४-१५-३०॥
dharmeṇa rājā dharmajñaḥ pātu sarvāṃ vasundharām। upāsyamāno bahubhiḥ siddhaiś cāpi mahātmabhiḥ॥ stūyamānaś ca satataṃ bandibhir bharatarṣabha॥14-15-30॥

(By righteousness, may the king, knower of dharma, protect all the earth. Being worshipped by many accomplished and also by great souls; being praised always by bards, O bull among the Bharatas.)
May the king who knows dharma, by righteousness, protect the whole earth—being worshipped by many accomplished and great souls, and ever praised by bards, O foremost of the Bharatas. (14-15-30)
तन्मया सह गत्वाद्य राजानं कुरुवर्धनम्। आपृच्छ कुरुशार्दूल गमनं द्वारकां प्रति ॥१४-१५-३१॥
tanmayā saha gatvā adya rājānam kuruvardhanam। āpṛccha kuruśārdūla gamanam dvārakāṃ prati ॥14-15-31॥

(This body, wealth, and what (is) in my house; (all is) offered, O son of Pritha, always to Yudhishthira. Dear and honored indeed to me (is) Yudhishthira, always the lord of the Kurus, (a man) of great intellect.)
This body, my wealth, and whatever is in my house, O Partha, have always been offered to Yudhishthira. Yudhishthira is dear and honored to me indeed, always the lord of the Kurus and a man of great intellect. (14-15-32)
प्रयोजनं चापि निवासकारणे; न विद्यते मे त्वदृते महाभुज। स्थिता हि पृथ्वी तव पार्थ शासने; गुरोः सुवृत्तस्य युधिष्ठिरस्य ह ॥१४-१५-३३॥
prayojanaṃ cāpi nivāsakāraṇe; na vidyate me tvadṛte mahābhuja। sthitā hi pṛthvī tava pārtha śāsane; guroḥ suvṛttasya yudhiṣṭhirasya ha ॥14-15-33॥

(Purpose and also in the reason for dwelling not exists for me except you, O mighty-armed. The earth indeed endures by your rule, O son of Pṛthā, in the rule of the preceptor, of the well-behaved Yudhiṣṭhira indeed.)
There is, for me, no purpose or even reason to dwell here except for you, O mighty-armed one. The earth indeed remains upheld under your rule, O Pārtha, and also under the guidance of the noble Yudhiṣṭhira, the virtuous son of the teacher. (14-15-33)
इतीदमुक्तं स तदा महात्मना; जनार्दनेनामितविक्रमोऽर्जुनः। तथेति कृच्छ्रादिव वाचमीरय; ज्जनार्दनं सम्प्रतिपूज्य पार्थिव ॥१४-१५-३४॥
