अतः परं प्रवक्ष्यामि तृतीयं गुणमुत्तमम्। सर्वभूतहितं लोके सतां धर्ममनिन्दितम् ॥१४-३८-१॥
ataḥ paraṃ pravakṣyāmi tṛtīyaṃ guṇam uttamam। sarvabhūtahitaṃ loke satāṃ dharmam aninditam॥14-38-1॥
[अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; परम् (param) - further; प्रवक्ष्यामि (pravakṣyāmi) - I shall explain; तृतीयम् (tṛtīyam) - the third; गुणम् (guṇam) - quality; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - supreme; सर्वभूतहितम् (sarvabhūtahitam) - welfare of all beings; लोके (loke) - in the world; सताम् (satām) - of the good; धर्मम् (dharmam) - dharma; अनिन्दितम् (aninditam) - blameless;]
(Therefore, further I shall explain the third supreme quality: the blameless dharma of the good, for the welfare of all beings in the world.)
Therefore, now I shall explain the third supreme quality, which is the blameless dharma of the virtuous, oriented toward the welfare of all beings in the world. (14-38-1)
आनन्दः प्रीतिरुद्रेकः प्राकाश्यं सुखमेव च। अकार्पण्यमसंरम्भः सन्तोषः श्रद्दधानता ॥१४-३८-२॥
ānandaḥ prīti rudrekaḥ prākāśyaṃ sukham eva ca। akāra-paṇyaṃ asaṃrambhaḥ santoṣaḥ śraddadhānatā ॥14-38-2॥
[आनन्दः (ānandaḥ) - bliss; प्रीति (prīti) - affection; उद्रेकः (udrekaḥ) - excess; प्राकाश्यं (prākāśyaṃ) - manifestness; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; अकार्पण्यम् (akārpaṇyam) - absence of wretchedness; असंरम्भः (asaṃrambhaḥ) - absence of agitation; सन्तोषः (santoṣaḥ) - contentment; श्रद्दधानता (śraddadhānatā) - having faith;]
(Bliss, affection, excess, manifestness, happiness indeed and, absence of wretchedness, absence of agitation, contentment, having faith.)
Bliss, affection, intense joy, openness, happiness, absence of misery, calmness, contentment, and faith. (14-38-2)
क्षमा धृतिरहिंसा च समता सत्यमार्जवम्। अक्रोधश्चानसूया च शौचं दाक्ष्यं पराक्रमः ॥१४-३८-३॥
kṣamā dhṛtirahiṁsā ca samatā satyamārjavam। akrodhaścānasūyā ca śaucaṁ dākṣyaṁ parākramaḥ ॥14-38-3॥
[क्षमा (kṣamā) - forbearance; धृति: (dhṛtiḥ) - steadfastness; अहिंसा (ahiṁsā) - non-injury; च (ca) - and; समता (samatā) - equanimity; सत्य (satya) - truth; आर्जवम् (ārjavam) - straightforwardness; अक्रोधः (akrodhaḥ) - absence of anger; च (ca) - and; अनसूया (anasūyā) - freedom from envy; च (ca) - and; शौचम् (śaucam) - purity; दाक्ष्यम् (dākṣyam) - skill; पराक्रमः (parākramaḥ) - valor;]
(Forbearance, steadfastness, non-injury, and equanimity, truth, straightforwardness, absence of anger, and freedom from envy, and purity, skill, valor.)

मुधा ज्ञानं मुधा वृत्तं मुधा सेवा मुधा श्रमः। एवं यो युक्तधर्मः स्यात्सोऽमुत्रानन्त्यमश्नुते ॥१४-३८-४॥
mudhā jñānaṃ mudhā vṛttaṃ mudhā sevā mudhā śramaḥ। evaṃ yo yuktadharmaḥ syāt so'mutrānantyam aśnute ॥14-38-4॥
[मुधा (mudhā) - in vain; futilely; ज्ञानं (jñānam) - knowledge; मुधा (mudhā) - in vain; futilely; वृत्तं (vṛttam) - conduct; behavior; मुधा (mudhā) - in vain; futilely; सेवा (sevā) - service; attendance; मुधा (mudhā) - in vain; futilely; श्रमः (śramaḥ) - effort; labor; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; यः (yaḥ) - who; युक्तधर्मः (yuktadharmaḥ) - one possessing united dharma; one established in proper righteousness; स्यात् (syāt) - may be; might be; सः (saḥ) - he; अमुत्र (amutra) - there (in the hereafter); अनन्त्यम् (anantyam) - endlessness; immortality; अश्नुते (aśnute) - attains; enjoys;]
(In vain knowledge, in vain conduct, in vain service, in vain effort. Thus, who may be established in dharma, he attains endlessness there.)
Knowledge is in vain, conduct is in vain, service is in vain, effort is in vain. Only one who possesses proper dharma attains immortality in the hereafter. (14-38-4)
निर्ममो निरहङ्कारो निराशीः सर्वतः समः। अकामहत इत्येष सतां धर्मः सनातनः ॥१४-३८-५॥
nirmamo nirahaṅkāro nirāśīḥ sarvataḥ samaḥ। akāmahata ityeṣa satāṃ dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ ॥14-38-5॥
[निर्ममः (nirmamaḥ) - without possessiveness; निरहङ्कारः (nirahaṅkāraḥ) - without ego; निराशीः (nirāśīḥ) - without desires; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - from all sides; समः (samaḥ) - equal; अकामहतः (akāmahataḥ) - not overcome by desire; इति (iti) - thus; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; सताम् (satām) - of the good (noble ones); धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - duty; सनातनः (sanātanaḥ) - eternal;]
(Without possessiveness, without ego, without desires, from all sides equal, not overcome by desire—thus, this is the eternal duty of the good.)
A person who is free from possessiveness, ego, and desires, who is equal to all and not overcome by desire—such is the eternal duty of the noble. (14-38-5)
विश्रम्भो ह्रीस्तितिक्षा च त्यागः शौचमतन्द्रिता। आनृशंस्यमसंमोहो दया भूतेष्वपैशुनम् ॥१४-३८-६॥
viśrambho hrīstitikṣā ca tyāgaḥ śaucamatandritā. ānṛśaṁsyam asaṁmoho dayā bhūteṣv apaiśunam ॥14-38-6॥
[विश्रम्भः (viśrambhaḥ) - firm trust; ह्रीः (hrīḥ) - modesty; तितिक्षा (titikṣā) - forbearance; च (ca) - and; त्यागः (tyāgaḥ) - renunciation; शौचम् (śaucam) - purity; अतन्द्रिता (atandritā) - untiringness; आनृशंस्यम् (ānṛśaṁsyam) - compassion; असंमोहः (asaṁmohaḥ) - absence of confusion; दया (dayā) - mercy; भूतेषु (bhūteṣu) - towards beings; अपैशुनम् (apaiśunam) - absence of malice;]
(Firm trust, modesty, forbearance, and renunciation, purity, untiringness, compassion, absence of confusion, mercy towards beings, absence of malice.)

हर्षस्तुष्टिर्विस्मयश्च विनयः साधुवृत्तता। शान्तिकर्म विशुद्धिश्च शुभा बुद्धिर्विमोचनम् ॥१४-३८-७॥
harṣa-tuṣṭi-vismayaś ca vinayaḥ sādhu-vṛttatā। śānti-karma viśuddhiś ca śubhā buddhiḥ vimocanam ॥14-38-7॥
[हर्षः (harṣaḥ) - joy; तुष्टिः (tuṣṭiḥ) - contentment; विस्मयः (vismayaḥ) - wonder; च (ca) - and; विनयः (vinayaḥ) - humility; साधुवृत्तता (sādhu-vṛttatā) - good conduct; शान्तिकर्म (śānti-karma) - peaceful actions; विशुद्धिः (viśuddhiḥ) - purity; च (ca) - and; शुभा (śubhā) - auspicious; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - intellect; विमोचनम् (vimocanam) - release;]
(Joy, contentment, wonder, and humility, good conduct, peaceful actions, purity, and auspicious intellect, release.)
Joy, contentment, wonder, humility, good conduct, peaceful action, purity, auspicious intellect, and liberation. (14-38-7)
उपेक्षा ब्रह्मचर्यं च परित्यागश्च सर्वशः। निर्ममत्वमनाशीस्त्वमपरिक्रीतधर्मता ॥१४-३८-८॥
upekṣā brahmacaryaṃ ca parityāgaś ca sarvaśaḥ। nirmamatvam anāśīstvam aparikrīta-dharmatā ॥14-38-8॥
[उपेक्षा (upekṣā) - indifference; ब्रह्मचर्यं (brahmacaryaṃ) - continence; च (ca) - and; परित्यागः (parityāgaḥ) - renunciation; च (ca) - and; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - completely; निर्ममत्वम् (nirmamatvam) - absence of possessiveness; अनाशीस्त्वम् (anāśīstvam) - freedom from excessive eating; अपरिक्रीतधर्मता (aparikrīta-dharmatā) - untraded righteousness;]
(Indifference, continence, and renunciation completely; absence of possessiveness, freedom from excessive eating, untraded righteousness.)
Indifference, continence, complete renunciation, absence of possessiveness, freedom from excessive eating, and righteousness not bartered away. (14-38-8)
मुधा दानं मुधा यज्ञो मुधाधीतं मुधा व्रतम्। मुधा प्रतिग्रहश्चैव मुधा धर्मो मुधा तपः ॥१४-३८-९॥
mudhā dānaṃ mudhā yajño mudhādhītaṃ mudhā vratam। mudhā pratigrahaścaiva mudhā dharmo mudhā tapaḥ॥14-38-9॥
[मुधा (mudhā) - in vain; uselessly; दानं (dānam) - gift; giving; मुधा (mudhā) - in vain; uselessly; यज्ञः (yajñaḥ) - sacrifice; मुधा अधीतं (mudhā adhītam) - in vain studied; मुधा (mudhā) - in vain; uselessly; व्रतम् (vratam) - vow; observance; मुधा (mudhā) - in vain; uselessly; प्रतिग्रहः (pratigrahaḥ) - accepting gifts; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; मुधा (mudhā) - in vain; uselessly; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - law; virtue; duty; मुधा (mudhā) - in vain; uselessly; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; penance;]
(In vain is the gift, in vain the sacrifice, in vain studied, in vain the vow; in vain accepting gifts indeed, in vain the law, in vain austerity.)
A gift is futile, a sacrifice is futile, study is futile, a vow is futile; accepting gifts is futile, and so is righteousness and austerity. (14-38-9)
एवंवृत्तास्तु ये केचिल्लोकेऽस्मिन्सत्त्वसंश्रयाः। ब्राह्मणा ब्रह्मयोनिस्थास्ते धीराः साधुदर्शिनः ॥१४-३८-१०॥
evaṃvṛttās tu ye kecil loke 'smin sattvasaṃśrayāḥ। brāhmaṇā brahmayonisthās te dhīrāḥ sādhudarśinaḥ॥14-38-10॥
[एवंवृत्ताः (evaṃvṛttāḥ) - thus-conducted; तु (tu) - but; ये (ye) - who; केचित् (kecit) - some; लोके (loke) - in the world; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; सत्त्वसंश्रयाः (sattvasaṃśrayāḥ) - resorting to sattva; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - the Brāhmaṇas; ब्रह्मयोनिस्थाः (brahmayonisthāḥ) - abiding in the origin of Brahman; ते (te) - they; धीराः (dhīrāḥ) - wise; साधुदर्शिनः (sādhudarśinaḥ) - seeing the virtuous;]
(But those who are thus-conducted, who in this world are some resorting to sattva, the Brāhmaṇas abiding in the origin of Brahman, they are wise, seeing the virtuous.)
But those Brāhmaṇas who conduct themselves in this way—even a few among men—who take refuge in sattva, abide in the source of Brahman; they are wise and see the virtuous. (14-38-10)
हित्वा सर्वाणि पापानि निःशोका ह्यजरामराः। दिवं प्राप्य तु ते धीराः कुर्वते वै ततस्ततः ॥१४-३८-११॥
hitvā sarvāṇi pāpāni niḥśokā hyajarāmarāḥ। divaṃ prāpya tu te dhīrāḥ kurvate vai tatastataḥ ॥14-38-11॥
[हित्वा (hitvā) - having abandoned; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; पापानि (pāpāni) - sins; निःशोका (niḥśokā) - free from sorrow; हि (hi) - indeed; अजरामराः (ajarāmarāḥ) - ageless and immortal; दिवं (divaṃ) - heaven; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having attained; तु (tu) - but; ते (te) - they; धीराः (dhīrāḥ) - steadfast ones; कुर्वते (kurvate) - act; वै (vai) - verily; ततः (tataḥ) - then; ततः (tataḥ) - then;]
(Having abandoned all sins, free from sorrow, indeed ageless and immortal, having attained heaven, but they steadfast ones act verily then then.)
After abandoning all sins, and becoming free from sorrow, indeed imperishable and immortal, the steadfast, having attained heaven, continue to act there in various ways. (14-38-11)
ईशित्वं च वशित्वं च लघुत्वं मनसश्च ते। विकुर्वते महात्मानो देवास्त्रिदिवगा इव ॥१४-३८-१२॥
īśitvaṃ ca vaśitvaṃ ca laghutvaṃ manasaś ca te। vikurvate mahātmāno devās tridivagā iva॥14-38-12॥
[ईशित्वं (īśitvam) - lordship; च (ca) - and; वशित्वं (vaśitvam) - sovereignty; च (ca) - and; लघुत्वं (laghutvam) - swiftness; मनसश् (manasaḥ) - of the mind; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - your; विकुर्वते (vikurvate) - manifest; महात्मानः (mahātmānaḥ) - great souls; देवाः (devāḥ) - divinities; त्रिदिवगाः (tridivagāḥ) - inhabitants of heaven; इव (iva) - like;]
(Lordship and sovereignty and swiftness of mind and yours, manifest the great souls like the divinities dwelling in heaven.)
Lordship, sovereignty, and swiftness of mind are manifested by your great souls, just like the gods dwelling in heaven. (14-38-12)
ऊर्ध्वस्रोतस इत्येते देवा वैकारिकाः स्मृताः। विकुर्वते प्रकृत्या वै दिवं प्राप्तास्ततस्ततः ॥ यद्यदिच्छन्ति तत्सर्वं भजन्ते विभजन्ति च ॥१४-३८-१३॥
ūrdhvasrotasa ity ete devā vaikārikāḥ smṛtāḥ। vikurvate prakṛtyā vai divaṃ prāptās tataḥ tataḥ॥ yadyad icchanti tat sarvaṃ bhajante vibhajanti ca॥14-38-13॥
[ऊर्ध्वस्रोतस (ūrdhvasrotas) - having upward-flowing streams; इति (iti) - thus; एते (ete) - these; देवा (devā) - gods; वैकारिकाः (vaikārikāḥ) - products of mind (vāikarika); स्मृताः (smṛtāḥ) - are remembered; विकुर्वते (vikurvate) - transform; प्रकृत्या (prakṛtyā) - by nature; वै (vai) - indeed; दिवं (divaṃ) - heaven; प्राप्ताः (prāptāḥ) - having reached; ततस्ततः (tatas tataḥ) - here and there; यद्यत् (yadyad) - whatever; इच्छन्ति (icchanti) - they wish; तत् (tat) - that; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; भजन्ते (bhajante) - they enjoy; विभजन्ति (vibhajanti) - they divide; च (ca) - and;]
(Having upward-flowing streams, thus these gods born of mind are remembered. They indeed transform by nature, having reached heaven here and there. Whatever they wish, all that they enjoy and divide also.)
These beings with upward-flowing energy are called the gods of the vaikārikas, being so remembered. By nature they transform and having attained heaven in various places, they enjoy and distribute whatever they desire. (14-38-13)
इत्येतत्सात्त्विकं वृत्तं कथितं वो द्विजर्षभाः। एतद्विज्ञाय विधिवल्लभते यद्यदिच्छति ॥१४-३८-१४॥
ity etat sāttvikaṃ vṛttaṃ kathitaṃ vo dvijarṣabhāḥ। etad vijñāya vidhivat labhate yad yad icchati॥14-38-14॥
[इति (iti) - thus; एतत् (etat) - this; सात्त्विकं (sāttvikaṃ) - pertaining to sattva; वृत्तं (vṛttaṃ) - conduct; कथितं (kathitam) - declared; वः (vaḥ) - to you; द्विजर्षभाः (dvijaṛṣabhāḥ) - best among twice-born; एतत् (etat) - this; विज्ञाय (vijñāya) - having understood; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - according to the rule; लभते (labhate) - obtains; यत् यत् (yat yat) - whatever; इच्छति (icchati) - he/she desires;]
(Thus, this sāttvika conduct declared to you, O best among twice-born; this having understood according to the rule, obtains whatever he desires.)
Thus, O best of the twice-born, this sāttvika conduct has been declared to you; whoever understands this rightly, according to the rule, attains whatever he desires. (14-38-14)
प्रकीर्तिताः सत्त्वगुणा विशेषतो; यथावदुक्तं गुणवृत्तमेव च। नरस्तु यो वेद गुणानिमान्सदा; गुणान्स भुङ्क्ते न गुणैः स भुज्यते ॥१४-३८-१५॥
prakīrtitāḥ sattvaguṇā viśeṣato; yathāvad uktaṁ guṇavṛttam eva ca। naras tu yo veda guṇān imān sadā; guṇān sa bhuṅkte na guṇaiḥ sa bhujyate॥14-38-15॥
[प्रकीर्तिताः (prakīrtitāḥ) - proclaimed; described; सत्त्वगुणाः (sattvaguṇāḥ) - qualities of sattva; qualities of purity; विशेषतः (viśeṣataḥ) - specially; in particular; यथावत् (yathāvat) - properly; as they are; उक्तं (uktaṁ) - spoken; told; गुणवृत्तम् (guṇavṛttam) - nature of qualities; activity of qualities; एव (eva) - indeed; only; च (ca) - and; नरः (naraḥ) - man; person; तु (tu) - but; however; यः (yaḥ) - who; वेद (veda) - knows; गुणान् (guṇān) - qualities; इमान् (imān) - these; सदा (sadā) - always; गुणान् (guṇān) - qualities; स (sa) - he; भुङ्क्ते (bhuṅkte) - enjoys; experiences; न (na) - not; गुणैः (guṇaiḥ) - by the qualities; स (sa) - he; भुज्यते (bhujyate) - is enjoyed; is subject to;]
(Proclaimed are the sattva qualities specially; as they are properly spoken, and the nature of qualities indeed. But the man who knows these qualities always, he enjoys the qualities, not is he enjoyed by the qualities.)
The sattva qualities have been especially described, along with their nature as properly stated. But the person who always knows these qualities, he enjoys the qualities—they do not enjoy or control him. (14-38-15)
