Brahmā said;
Therefore, now I shall explain the third supreme quality, which is the blameless dharma of the virtuous, oriented toward the welfare of all beings in the world. (14-38-1)
Bliss, affection, intense joy, openness, happiness, absence of misery, calmness, contentment, and faith. (14-38-2)
Forbearance, steadfastness, non-injury, equanimity, truthfulness, simplicity, absence of anger, freedom from envy, purity, skill, and valor. (14-38-3)
Knowledge is in vain, conduct is in vain, service is in vain, effort is in vain. Only one who possesses proper dharma attains immortality in the hereafter. (14-38-4)
A person who is free from possessiveness, ego, and desires, who is equal to all and not overcome by desire—such is the eternal duty of the noble. (14-38-5)
Firm trust, modesty, forbearance, renunciation, purity, untiringness, compassion, mental clarity, mercy towards all beings, and absence of malice. (14-38-6)
Joy, contentment, wonder, humility, good conduct, peaceful action, purity, auspicious intellect, and liberation. (14-38-7)
Indifference, continence, complete renunciation, absence of possessiveness, freedom from excessive eating, and righteousness not bartered away. (14-38-8)
A gift is futile, a sacrifice is futile, study is futile, a vow is futile; accepting gifts is futile, and so is righteousness and austerity. (14-38-9)
But those Brāhmaṇas who conduct themselves in this way—even a few among men—who take refuge in sattva, abide in the source of Brahman; they are wise and see the virtuous. (14-38-10)
After abandoning all sins, and becoming free from sorrow, indeed imperishable and immortal, the steadfast, having attained heaven, continue to act there in various ways. (14-38-11)
Lordship, sovereignty, and swiftness of mind are manifested by your great souls, just like the gods dwelling in heaven. (14-38-12)
These beings with upward-flowing energy are called the gods of the vaikārikas, being so remembered. By nature they transform and having attained heaven in various places, they enjoy and distribute whatever they desire. (14-38-13)
Thus, O best of the twice-born, this sāttvika conduct has been declared to you; whoever understands this rightly, according to the rule, attains whatever he desires. (14-38-14)
The sattva qualities have been especially described, along with their nature as properly stated. But the person who always knows these qualities, he enjoys the qualities—they do not enjoy or control him. (14-38-15)
