Brahmā said.
अव्यक्तात्पूर्वमुत्पन्नो महानात्मा महामतिः। आदिर्गुणानां सर्वेषां प्रथमः सर्ग उच्यते ॥१४-४०-१॥
avyaktāt pūrvam utpanno mahānātmā mahāmatiḥ। ādir guṇānāṃ sarveṣāṃ prathamaḥ sarga ucyate ॥14-40-1॥
[अव्यक्तात् (avyaktāt) - from the Unmanifest; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - previously; उत्पन्नः (utpannaḥ) - arisen; महान् (mahān) - the Great (principle); आत्मा (ātmā) - Self; महामतिः (mahāmatiḥ) - the Great Intellect; आदि: (आदिः) (ādiḥ) - the beginning; गुणानाम् (guṇānām) - of the guṇas; सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - of all; प्रथमः (prathamaḥ) - the first; सर्ग (sarga) - creation; उच्यते (ucyate) - is said;]
(From the Unmanifest previously arisen, the Great Self (the Great Intellect), the beginning of all the guṇas, the first, is said to be creation.)
Prior to the Unmanifest, the Great Self — the Great Intellect — arose; this is called the first creation, the beginning of all the guṇas. (14-40-1)
महानात्मा मतिर्विष्णुर्विश्वः शम्भुश्च वीर्यवान्। बुद्धिः प्रज्ञोपलब्धिश्च तथा ख्यातिर्धृतिः स्मृतिः ॥१४-४०-२॥
mahānātmā matirviṣṇurviśvaḥ śambhuśca vīryavān। buddhiḥ prajñopalabdhiśca tathā khyātirdhṛtiḥ smṛtiḥ ॥14-40-2॥
[महानात्मा (mahānātmā) - great-souled; मतिः (matiḥ) - intellect; विष्णुः (viṣṇuḥ) - all-pervader; विश्वः (viśvaḥ) - all; शम्भुः (śambhuḥ) - source of happiness; च (ca) - and; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - powerful; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - wisdom; प्रज्ञोपलब्धिः (prajñopalabdhiḥ) - attainment of insight; च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - also; ख्यातिः (khyātiḥ) - renown; धृतिः (dhṛtiḥ) - steadfastness; स्मृतिः (smṛtiḥ) - memory;]
(Great-souled, intellect, all-pervader, all, source of happiness, and powerful; wisdom, attainment of insight and also renown, steadfastness, memory.)
He is great-souled, intellect, the all-pervader, all, the source of happiness, and powerful; also wisdom, attainment of insight, renown, steadfastness, and memory. (14-40-2)
पर्यायवाचकैः शब्दैर्महानात्मा विभाव्यते। तं जानन्ब्राह्मणो विद्वान्न प्रमोहं निगच्छति ॥१४-४०-३॥
paryāyavācakaiḥ śabdair mahānātmā vibhāvyate। taṃ jānann brāhmaṇo vidvān na pramohaṃ nigacchati॥14-40-3॥
[पर्यायवाचकैः (paryāyavācakaiḥ) - by synonymous; शब्दैः (śabdaiḥ) - by words; महानात्मा (mahānātmā) - great Self; विभाव्यते (vibhāvyate) - is conceived; तं (taṃ) - him; जानन् (jānann) - knowing; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - Brahmin; विद्वान् (vidvān) - the wise; न (na) - not; प्रमोहम् (pramoham) - bewilderment; निगच्छति (nigacchati) - incurs;]
(By synonymous words, the great Self is conceived. Knowing him, the wise Brahmin does not incur bewilderment. (14-40-3))
The great Self is understood through synonymous words. A wise Brahmin, knowing Him, does not fall into delusion. (14-40-3)
सर्वतःपाणिपादश्च सर्वतोक्षिशिरोमुखः। सर्वतःश्रुतिमाँल्लोके सर्वं व्याप्य स तिष्ठति ॥१४-४०-४॥
sarvataḥ-pāṇi-pādaś ca sarvato-akṣi-śiro-mukhaḥ। sarvataḥ-śrutimān loke sarvaṃ vyāpya sa tiṣṭhati ॥14-40-4॥
[सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - from all sides; everywhere; पाणि (pāṇi) - hands; पादः (pādaḥ) - feet; च (ca) - and; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - from all sides; everywhere; अक्षि (akṣi) - eyes; शिरः (śiraḥ) - heads; मुखः (mukhaḥ) - mouths; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - from all sides; everywhere; श्रुतिमान् (śrutimān) - possessing ears; endowed with hearing; लोके (loke) - in the world; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; everything; व्याप्य (vyāpya) - pervading; सः (saḥ) - he; तिष्ठति (tiṣṭhati) - stands; abides;]
(From all sides hands and feet and from all sides eyes, heads, mouths; from all sides possessing ears in the world, all pervading, he stands.)
He has hands and feet everywhere, has eyes, heads, and mouths everywhere; possessing ears everywhere in the world, pervading all, he abides. (14-40-4)
महाप्रभार्चिः पुरुषः सर्वस्य हृदि निश्रितः। अणिमा लघिमा प्राप्तिरीशानो ज्योतिरव्ययः ॥१४-४०-५॥
mahāprabhārciḥ puruṣaḥ sarvasya hṛdi niśritaḥ. aṇimā laghimā prāptiriśāno jyotiravyayaḥ ॥14-40-5॥
[महाप्रभार्चिः (mahāprabhārciḥ) - having great light as his radiance; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - the person; सर्वस्य (sarvasya) - of all; हृदि (hṛdi) - in the heart; निश्रितः (niśritaḥ) - entered; अणिमा (aṇimā) - minuteness power; लघिमा (laghimā) - lightness power; प्राप्तिः (prāptiḥ) - attainment power; ईशानः (īśānaḥ) - the lord; ज्योतिः (jyotiḥ) - light; अव्ययः (avyayaḥ) - imperishable;]
(Having great light as his radiance, the person entered the heart of all. Minuteness power, lightness power, attainment power, the lord, light, imperishable.)
The supreme person, possessing immense effulgence, resides in the heart of all. He is the lord endowed with the powers of minuteness, lightness, attainment, is radiant, and imperishable. (14-40-5)
तत्र बुद्धिमतां लोकाः संन्यासनिरताश्च ये। ध्यानिनो नित्ययोगाश्च सत्यसन्धा जितेन्द्रियाः ॥१४-४०-६॥
tatra buddhimatāṃ lokāḥ saṃnyāsa-niratāś ca ye. dhyānino nitya-yogāś ca satyasaṃdhā jitendriyāḥ ॥14-40-6॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; बुद्धिमतां (buddhimatām) - of the wise; of the intelligent; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - people; beings; संन्यास-निरताः (saṃnyāsa-niratāḥ) - devoted to renunciation; च (ca) - and; ये (ye) - who; ध्यानिनः (dhyāninaḥ) - meditators; those practicing meditation; नित्य-योगाः (nitya-yogāḥ) - steadfast in union; perpetually united (in yoga); च (ca) - and; सत्यसन्धाः (satyasaṃdhāḥ) - truthful; steadfast in truth; जितेन्द्रियाः (jitendriyāḥ) - self-controlled; those whose senses are conquered;]
(There (are) people of intelligence, devoted to renunciation and who are (the ones who are) meditators, always united (in yoga), truthful, and self-controlled.)
There are, among them, people of wisdom: those devoted to renunciation, meditative, perpetually engaged in yoga, steadfast in truth, and self-controlled. (14-40-6)
ज्ञानवन्तश्च ये केचिदलुब्धा जितमन्यवः। प्रसन्नमनसो धीरा निर्ममा निरहङ्कृताः ॥विमुक्ताः सर्व एवैते महत्त्वमुपयान्ति वै ॥१४-४०-७॥
jñānavantaś ca ye kecid alubdhā jita-manyavaḥ। prasanna-manaso dhīrā nirmamā nirahaṃkṛtāḥ ॥ vimuktāḥ sarva evaite mahattvam upayānti vai ॥14-40-7॥
[ज्ञानवन्तः (jñānavantaḥ) - possessed of knowledge; च (ca) - and; ये (ye) - who; केचित् (kecit) - some; अलुब्धाः (alubdhāḥ) - not greedy; जितमन्यवः (jita-manyavaḥ) - those with conquered anger; प्रसन्नमनसः (prasanna-manasāḥ) - of clear mind; धीराः (dhīrāḥ) - steadfast; निर्ममाः (nirmamāḥ) - without sense of possessiveness; निरहङ्कृताः (nirahaṃkṛtāḥ) - without ego; विमुक्ताः (vimuktāḥ) - liberated; सर्वे (sarve) - all; एव (eva) - indeed; एते (ete) - these; महत्त्वम् (mahattvam) - greatness; उपयान्ति (upayānti) - attain; वै (vai) - truly;]
(Possessed of knowledge and some, not greedy, with conquered anger, of clear mind, steadfast, without possessiveness, free from ego, liberated, all indeed these truly attain greatness.)
All those who possess knowledge, are not greedy, have conquered anger, are clear-minded, steadfast, free from possessiveness and ego, and are liberated—these truly attain greatness. (14-40-7)
आत्मनो महतो वेद यः पुण्यां गतिमुत्तमाम्। स धीरः सर्वलोकेषु न मोहमधिगच्छति ॥ विष्णुरेवादिसर्गेषु स्वयम्भूर्भवति प्रभुः ॥१४-४०-८॥
ātmano mahato veda yaḥ puṇyāṃ gatim uttamām। sa dhīraḥ sarvalokeṣu na moham adhigacchati॥ viṣṇur eva ādisargeṣu svayambhūr bhavati prabhuḥ॥14-40-8॥
[आत्मनः (ātmanas) - of the Self; महतः (mahataḥ) - great; वेद (veda) - knows; यः (yaḥ) - who; पुण्यां (puṇyām) - auspicious; गतिम् (gatim) - path; उत्तमाम् (uttamām) - supreme; सः (saḥ) - he; धीः (dhīḥ) - wise; सर्वलोकेषु (sarvalokeṣu) - in all worlds; न (na) - not; मोहम् (moham) - delusion; अधिगच्छति (adhigacchati) - attains; विष्णुः (viṣṇuḥ) - Viṣṇu; एव (eva) - indeed; आदिसर्गेषु (ādisargeṣu) - in the primary creations; स्वयम्भूः (svayambhūḥ) - self-born; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the Lord;]
(Who knows the supreme auspicious path of the great Self, he, the wise, in all worlds does not attain delusion. Viṣṇu indeed, in the primary creations, self-born becomes, the Lord. (14-40-8))
He who knows the supreme auspicious path of the great Self—such a wise one never falls into delusion in any world. Indeed, in the original creations, Viṣṇu himself becomes the self-born Lord. (14-40-8)
एवं हि यो वेद गुहाशयं प्रभुं; नरः पुराणं पुरुषं विश्वरूपम्। हिरण्मयं बुद्धिमतां परां गतिं; स बुद्धिमान्बुद्धिमतीत्य तिष्ठति ॥१४-४०-९॥
evaṁ hi yo veda guhāśayaṁ prabhuṁ; naraḥ purāṇaṁ puruṣaṁ viśvarūpam। hiraṇmayaṁ buddhimatāṁ parāṁ gatiṁ; sa buddhi-mān buddhimatītya tiṣṭhati ॥14-40-9॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; हि (hi) - indeed; यः (yaḥ) - who; वेद (veda) - knows; गुहाशयम् (guhāśayam) - the dweller in the cave (of the heart); प्रभुम् (prabhum) - the lord; नरः (naraḥ) - man; पुराणम् (purāṇam) - ancient; पुरुषम् (puruṣam) - person; विश्वरूपम् (viśvarūpam) - having the form of the universe; हिरण्मयम् (hiraṇmayam) - golden; बुद्धिमताम् (buddhimatām) - of the intelligent; पराम् (parām) - supreme; गतिम् (gatim) - goal; सः (saḥ) - he; बुद्धिमान् (buddhimān) - wise; बुद्धिमती (buddhimatī) - with intellect; इत्य (itya) - thus; तिष्ठति (tiṣṭhati) - remains;]
(Thus indeed who knows the Lord dwelling in the cave, the man, the ancient person, having the form of the universe, golden, the supreme goal of the intelligent; he wise, with intellect, thus remains.)
Thus, indeed, he who knows the Lord dwelling in the cave (of the heart), the ancient person, the universal form, the golden one, the supreme goal of the wise—he, being wise, abides in wisdom. (14-40-9)
