uttaṅka uvāca॥
Uttaṅka said.
brūhi keśava tattvena tvam adhyātmam aninditam। śrutvā śreyo’bhidhāsyāmi śāpaṁ vā te janārdana ॥14-53-1॥
Speak, Keśava, the true and blameless adhyātman; after hearing, I shall declare to you, Janārdana, either what is better or a curse. (14-53-1)
vāsudeva uvāca॥
Vasudeva said.
tamo rajaś ca sattvaṃ ca viddhi bhāvān madāśrayān। tathā rudrān vasūṃś cāpi viddhi matprabhavān dvija ॥14-53-2॥
Know that darkness, passion, and goodness are states depending on me; and likewise, know that the Rudras and Vasus also originate from me, O twice-born. (14-53-2)
mayi sarvāṇi bhūtāni sarvabhūteṣu cāpy aham। sthita ity abhijānīhi mā te'bhūd atra saṁśayaḥ ॥14-53-3॥
Know that all beings are in me, and I am also in all beings; thus situated, let there be no doubt here for you. (14-53-3)
tathā daityagaṇānsarvānyakṣarākṣasapannagān। gandharvāpsarasaścaiva viddhi matprabhvāndvija ॥14-53-4॥
O twice-born, know that all the groups of daityas, yakṣas, rākṣasas, serpents, gandharvas, and apsarases have arisen from me. (14-53-4)
sadasacceva yatprāhuravyaktaṃ vyaktameva ca। akṣaraṃ ca kṣaraṃ caiva sarvametanmadātmakam ॥14-53-5॥
Whatever is called being and non-being, the unmanifest and the manifest, the imperishable and the perishable—all this has Me as its essence. (14-53-5)
ye ca āśrameṣu vai dharmāś caturṣu vihatā mune. daivāni caiva karmāṇi viddhi sarvaṃ madātmakam ॥14-53-6॥
O sage, know all duties enjoined in the four āśramas and also all divine actions to be composed of my own essence. (14-53-6)
asacca sadasaccaiva yadviśvaṁ sadasataḥ param। tataḥ paraṁ nāsti caiva devadevātsanātanāt ॥14-53-7॥
There is nothing beyond the non-existent, the existent, and also that which is both, this universe, which is beyond both existence and non-existence. Beyond that, truly, there is nothing—nothing beyond the eternal, the God of gods. (14-53-7)
oṅkāra-prabhavān vedān viddhi māṃ tvaṃ bhṛgūdvaha। yūpaṃ somaṃ tathaiva iha tridaśāpyāyanaṃ makhe॥14-53-8॥
O best of the Bhrigus, you should know me as the Vedas that have arisen from oṅkāra, as the sacrificial post, soma, and also as the satisfier of the gods in the sacrifice. (14-53-8)
hotāram api havyaṃ ca viddhi māṃ bhṛgunandana. adhvaryuḥ kalpakaś cāpi haviḥ paramasaṃskṛtam ॥14-53-9॥
O son of Bhṛgu, know me to be also the oblation-offerer and the oblation; I am the Adhvaryu, the arranger, and the supremely purified oblation. (14-53-9)
udgātā cāpi māṃ stauti gītaghoṣairmahādhvare। prāyaścitteṣu māṃ brahmañśāntimaṅgalavācakāḥ ॥ stuvanti viśvakarmāṇaṃ satataṃ dvijasattamāḥ ॥14-53-10॥
The chanter also sings my praises with songs during the great sacrifice. In rituals of expiation, O Brahman, those who utter words of peace and auspiciousness always praise me as Viśvakarman, best of the twice-born. (14-53-10)
viddhi mahyaṃ sutaṃ dharmamagrajaṃ dvijasattama। mānasaṃ dayitaṃ vipra sarvabhūtadayātmakam ॥14-53-11॥
O best of brāhmaṇas, know my son, the elder brother of Dharma, who is mind-born and beloved, to be of the nature of compassion to all beings. (14-53-11)
tatrāhaṁ vartamānaiś ca nivṛttaiś caiva mānavaiḥ। bahvīḥ saṁsaramāṇo vai yonīr hi dvijasattama॥14-53-12॥
O best of the twice-born, there I have wandered through many births along with both present and departed men. (14-53-12)
dharmasaṃrakṣaṇārthāya dharmasaṃsthāpanāya ca। taistairveṣaiś ca rūpaiś ca triṣu lokeṣu bhārgava ॥14-53-13॥
O Bhārgava, for the protection and establishment of dharma, assuming various forms and manifestations in the three worlds. (14-53-13)
ahaṃ viṣṇur ahaṃ brahmā śakro'tha prabhavāpyayaḥ। bhūtagrāmasya sarvasya sraṣṭā saṃhāra eva ca॥14-53-14॥
I am Viṣṇu, I am Brahmā, I am Indra, and I am both the origin and dissolution; I am the creator and indeed the destroyer of all beings. (14-53-14)
adharme vartamānānāṁ sarveṣām aham apy uta। dharmasya setuṁ badhnāmi calite calite yuge॥ tās tā yonīḥ praviśyāham prajānāṁ hitakāmyayā॥14-53-15॥
When all are abiding in unrighteousness, I too indeed establish a bridge of righteousness every time the ages decline. Entering such various births, I act for the welfare of living beings. (14-53-15)
yadā tvahaṁ devayonau vartāmi bhṛgunandana. tadāhaṁ devavatsarvamācarāmi na saṁśayaḥ ॥14-53-16॥
O descendent of Bhṛgu, when I exist in the divine womb, then I perform all actions like a god—there is no doubt about this. (14-53-16)
yadā gandharvayonau tu vartāmi bhṛgunandana। tadā gandharvavacceṣṭāḥ sarvāśceṣṭāmi bhārgava ॥14-53-17॥
O descendant of Bhṛgu, when I exist in the Gandharva womb, then, O Bhārgava, I perform all actions like a Gandharva. (14-53-17)
nāgayonau yadā caiva tadā vartāmi nāgavat। yakṣarākṣasayonīśca yathāvad vicarāmyaham ॥14-53-18॥
When I am in the nāga species, then I exist like a nāga; and in the yakṣa and rākṣasa species, I move about as is proper. (14-53-18)
mānuṣye vartamāne tu kṛpaṇaṃ yācitā mayā | na ca te jātasammohā vaco gṛhṇanti me hitam ॥14-53-19॥
While I begged those who are miserable in human existence, they, being deluded, do not accept my beneficial words. (14-53-19)
bhayaṃ ca mahad uddiśya trāsitāḥ kuravo mayā। kruddha iva bhūtvā ca punar yathāvat anudarśitāḥ ॥14-53-20॥
The Kurus were frightened by me, having deliberately caused great fear; I acted as if angry and then properly revealed myself again. (14-53-20)
te'dharmeṇa iha saṁyuktāḥ parītāḥ kāladharmaṇā। dharmeṇa nihatā yuddhe gatāḥ svargaṁ na saṁśayaḥ ॥14-53-21॥
Those who, being joined to unrighteousness here and overpowered by the Law of Time, were slain in battle by righteousness, have gone to heaven; there is no doubt. (14-53-21)
lokeṣu pāṇḍavāścaiva gatāḥ khyātiṃ dvijottama। etatte sarvam ākhyātaṃ yan māṃ tvaṃ paripṛcchasi ॥14-53-22॥
O best of the twice-born, the Pāṇḍavas have indeed attained fame in the worlds. All this which you ask me has been told to you. (14-53-22)
