ब्रूहि केशव तत्त्वेन त्वमध्यात्ममनिन्दितम्। श्रुत्वा श्रेयोऽभिधास्यामि शापं वा ते जनार्दन ॥१४-५३-१॥
brūhi keśava tattvena tvam adhyātmam aninditam। śrutvā śreyo’bhidhāsyāmi śāpaṁ vā te janārdana ॥14-53-1॥
[ब्रूहि (brūhi) - speak; say; केशव (keśava) - Keśava; तत्त्वेन (tattvena) - in truth; with reality; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अध्यात्मम् (adhyātmam) - adhyātman; about the inner self; अनिन्दितम् (aninditam) - blameless; faultless; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - after hearing; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - the better; welfare; benefit; अभिधास्यामि (abhidhāsyāmi) - I will say; I shall declare; शापम् (śāpam) - curse; वा (vā) - or; ते (te) - to you; जनार्दन (janārdana) - Janārdana;]
(Speak, Keśava, in truth you the blameless adhyātman; after hearing, the better I will say or the curse to you, Janārdana.)
Speak, Keśava, the true and blameless adhyātman; after hearing, I shall declare to you, Janārdana, either what is better or a curse. (14-53-1)

तमो रजश्च सत्त्वं च विद्धि भावान्मदाश्रयान्। तथा रुद्रान्वसूंश्चापि विद्धि मत्प्रभवान्द्विज ॥१४-५३-२॥
tamo rajaś ca sattvaṃ ca viddhi bhāvān madāśrayān। tathā rudrān vasūṃś cāpi viddhi matprabhavān dvija ॥14-53-2॥
[तमः (tamaḥ) (tamaḥ) - darkness; रजः (rajaḥ) (rajaḥ) - passion; च (ca) (ca) - and; सत्त्वं (sattvaṃ) (sattvaṃ) - goodness; च (ca) (ca) - and; विद्धि (viddhi) (viddhi) - know; भावान् (bhāvān) (bhāvān) - states; मदाश्रयान् (madāśrayān) (madāśrayān) - dependent on me; तथा (tathā) (tathā) - likewise; रुद्रान् (rudrān) (rudrān) - Rudras; वसून् (vasūn) (vasūn) - Vasus; च (ca) (ca) - and; अपि (api) (api) - also; विद्धि (viddhi) (viddhi) - know; मत्-प्रभवान् (matprabhavān) (matprabhavān) - originated from me; द्विज (dvija) (dvija) - O twice-born;]
(Darkness, passion, and goodness know the states dependent on me; likewise, Rudras and Vasus also know as originated from me, O twice-born.)
Know that darkness, passion, and goodness are states depending on me; and likewise, know that the Rudras and Vasus also originate from me, O twice-born. (14-53-2)
मयि सर्वाणि भूतानि सर्वभूतेषु चाप्यहम्। स्थित इत्यभिजानीहि मा तेऽभूदत्र संशयः ॥१४-५३-३॥
mayi sarvāṇi bhūtāni sarvabhūteṣu cāpy aham। sthita ity abhijānīhi mā te'bhūd atra saṁśayaḥ ॥14-53-3॥
[मयि (mayi) - in me; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; भूतानि (bhūtāni) - beings; सर्वभूतेषु (sarvabhūteṣu) - in all beings; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अहम् (aham) - I; स्थित (sthita) - situated; इति (iti) - thus; अभिजानीहि (abhijānīhi) - know; मा (mā) - not; ते (te) - for (you); अभूत् (abhūt) - should be; अत्र (atra) - here; संशयः (saṁśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(In me all beings; in all beings also I; situated thus know; not for you should be here doubt;)
Know that all beings are in me, and I am also in all beings; thus situated, let there be no doubt here for you. (14-53-3)
तथा दैत्यगणान्सर्वान्यक्षराक्षसपन्नगान्। गन्धर्वाप्सरसश्चैव विद्धि मत्प्रभवान्द्विज ॥१४-५३-४॥
tathā daityagaṇānsarvānyakṣarākṣasapannagān। gandharvāpsarasaścaiva viddhi matprabhvāndvija ॥14-53-4॥
[तथा (tathā) (tathā) - thus; दैत्यगणान् (daityagaṇān) (daityagaṇān) - the groups of daityas (demons descended from Diti); सर्वान् (sarvān) (sarvān) - all; यक्षराक्षसपन्नगान् (yakṣarākṣasapannagān) (yakṣarākṣasapannagān) - yakṣas (nature-spirits), rākṣasas (demons), and serpents (nāgas); गन्धर्वाप्सरसः (gandharvāpsarasaḥ) (gandharvāpsarasaḥ) - gandharvas and apsarases (celestial musicians and nymphs); च (ca) (ca) - and; एव (eva) (eva) - indeed; विद्धि (viddhi) (viddhi) - know; मत्प्रभवान् (matprabhavān) (matprabhavān) - arisen from me; द्विज (dvija) (dvija) - O twice-born (Brahmin);]
(Thus, all the hosts of daityas, yakṣas, rākṣasas, serpents, gandharvas, and apsarases, know (them as) arisen from me, O twice-born.)
O twice-born, know that all the groups of daityas, yakṣas, rākṣasas, serpents, gandharvas, and apsarases have arisen from me. (14-53-4)
सदसच्चैव यत्प्राहुरव्यक्तं व्यक्तमेव च। अक्षरं च क्षरं चैव सर्वमेतन्मदात्मकम् ॥१४-५३-५॥
sadasacceva yatprāhuravyaktaṃ vyaktameva ca। akṣaraṃ ca kṣaraṃ caiva sarvametanmadātmakam ॥14-53-5॥
[सत् (sat) - being; असत् (asat) - non-being; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; यत् (yat) - that which; प्राहुः (prāhuḥ) - they say; अव्यक्तम् (avyaktam) - the unmanifest; व्यक्तम् (vyaktam) - the manifest; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; अक्षरम् (akṣaram) - the imperishable; च (ca) - and; क्षरम् (kṣaram) - the perishable; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; एतत् (etat) - this; मदात्मकम् (madātmakam) - having Me as its essence;]
(Being, non-being, and indeed, that which they say—the unmanifest and the manifest indeed, and the imperishable and the perishable indeed, all this, this, is of Me as the essence.)
Whatever is called being and non-being, the unmanifest and the manifest, the imperishable and the perishable—all this has Me as its essence. (14-53-5)
ये चाश्रमेषु वै धर्माश्चतुर्षु विहिता मुने। दैवानि चैव कर्माणि विद्धि सर्वं मदात्मकम् ॥१४-५३-६॥
ye ca āśrameṣu vai dharmāś caturṣu vihatā mune. daivāni caiva karmāṇi viddhi sarvaṃ madātmakam ॥14-53-6॥
[ये (ye) - which; च (ca) - and; आश्रमेषु (āśrameṣu) - in the āśramas; वै (vai) - indeed; धर्माः (dharmāḥ) - duties; चतुर्षु (caturṣu) - in the four; विहिता (vihitā) - enjoined; मुने (mune) - O sage; दैवानि (daivāni) - divine; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - also; कर्माणि (karmāṇi) - actions; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; मत्-आत्मकम् (mad-ātmakam) - having me as essence;]
(Which and in the āśramas indeed duties in the four enjoined O sage, divine and also actions, know all having me as essence.)
O sage, know all duties enjoined in the four āśramas and also all divine actions to be composed of my own essence. (14-53-6)
असच्च सदसच्चैव यद्विश्वं सदसतः परम्। ततः परं नास्ति चैव देवदेवात्सनातनात् ॥१४-५३-७॥
asacca sadasaccaiva yadviśvaṁ sadasataḥ param। tataḥ paraṁ nāsti caiva devadevātsanātanāt ॥14-53-7॥
[असच्च (asacca) - non-existent; false; सदसच्च (sadasacca) - existent and non-existent; एव (eva) - indeed; यद् (yad) - which; विश्वं (viśvam) - universe; सदसतः (sadasataḥ) - than existence and non-existence; परम् (param) - beyond; higher; ततः (tataḥ) - than that; परं (param) - beyond; higher; नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; चैव (caiva) - and indeed; देवदेवात् (devadevāt) - from the God of gods; सनातनात् (sanātanāt) - from the eternal;]
(Non-existent, existent and non-existent indeed, which universe, than existence and non-existence beyond; than that beyond there is not, and indeed from the God of gods, from the eternal.)
There is nothing beyond the non-existent, the existent, and also that which is both, this universe, which is beyond both existence and non-existence. Beyond that, truly, there is nothing—nothing beyond the eternal, the God of gods. (14-53-7)
ओङ्कारप्रभवान्वेदान्विद्धि मां त्वं भृगूद्वह। यूपं सोमं तथैवेह त्रिदशाप्यायनं मखे ॥१४-५३-८॥
oṅkāra-prabhavān vedān viddhi māṃ tvaṃ bhṛgūdvaha। yūpaṃ somaṃ tathaiva iha tridaśāpyāyanaṃ makhe॥14-53-8॥
[ओङ्कारप्रभवान् (oṅkāra-prabhavān) - arisen from oṅkāra; वेदान् (vedān) - the Vedas; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; माम् (mām) - me; त्वम् (tvam) - you; भृगूद्वह (bhṛgūdvaha) - O best of the Bhrigus; यूपम् (yūpam) - the sacrificial post; सोमम् (somam) - soma; तथैव (tathaiva) - also; इह (iha) - here; त्रिदशाप्यायनम् (tridaśāpyāyanam) - the satisfaction of the gods; मखे (makhe) - in the sacrifice;]
(Know me as the Vedas arisen from oṅkāra, O best of the Bhrigus, you. (Know me as) the sacrificial post, soma, also here, the satisfaction of the gods in the sacrifice.)
O best of the Bhrigus, you should know me as the Vedas that have arisen from oṅkāra, as the sacrificial post, soma, and also as the satisfier of the gods in the sacrifice. (14-53-8)
होतारमपि हव्यं च विद्धि मां भृगुनन्दन। अध्वर्युः कल्पकश्चापि हविः परमसंस्कृतम् ॥१४-५३-९॥
hotāram api havyaṃ ca viddhi māṃ bhṛgunandana. adhvaryuḥ kalpakaś cāpi haviḥ paramasaṃskṛtam ॥14-53-9॥
[होतारम् (hotāram) - the oblation-offerer; अपि (api) - also; हव्यम् (havyam) - oblation; च (ca) - and; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; माम् (mām) - me; भृगुनन्दन (bhṛgunandana) - O son of Bhṛgu; अध्वर्युः (adhvaryuḥ) - the Adhvaryu priest; कल्पकः (kalpakaḥ) - arranger; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; हविः (haviḥ) - oblations; परमसंस्कृतम् (paramasaṃskṛtam) - supremely purified;]
(The oblation-offerer also, the oblation too, know me, O son of Bhṛgu; the Adhvaryu, the arranger also, and the oblation, supremely purified.)
O son of Bhṛgu, know me to be also the oblation-offerer and the oblation; I am the Adhvaryu, the arranger, and the supremely purified oblation. (14-53-9)
उद्गाता चापि मां स्तौति गीतघोषैर्महाध्वरे। प्रायश्चित्तेषु मां ब्रह्मञ्शान्तिमङ्गलवाचकाः ॥ स्तुवन्ति विश्वकर्माणं सततं द्विजसत्तमाः ॥१४-५३-१०॥
udgātā cāpi māṃ stauti gītaghoṣairmahādhvare। prāyaścitteṣu māṃ brahmañśāntimaṅgalavācakāḥ ॥ stuvanti viśvakarmāṇaṃ satataṃ dvijasattamāḥ ॥14-53-10॥
[उद्गाता (udgātā) - chanter; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; माम् (mām) - me; स्तौति (stauti) - praises; गीतघोषैः (gītaghoṣaiḥ) - with song chants; महाध्वरे (mahādhvare) - in the great sacrifice; प्रायश्चित्तेषु (prāyaścitteṣu) - in expiations; माम् (mām) - me; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - Brahman; शान्तिमङ्गलवाचकाः (śāntimaṅgalavācakāḥ) - speaking words of peace and auspiciousness; स्तुवन्ति (stuvanti) - they praise; विश्वकर्माणम् (viśvakarmāṇam) - Viśvakarman; सततम् (satatam) - always; द्विजसत्तमाः (dvijasattamāḥ) - best of twice-born;]
(The chanter also praises me with song chants in the great sacrifice. In expiations, O Brahman, those speaking words of peace and auspiciousness praise me, Viśvakarman, always, O best of twice-born.)
The chanter also sings my praises with songs during the great sacrifice. In rituals of expiation, O Brahman, those who utter words of peace and auspiciousness always praise me as Viśvakarman, best of the twice-born. (14-53-10)
विद्धि मह्यं सुतं धर्ममग्रजं द्विजसत्तम। मानसं दयितं विप्र सर्वभूतदयात्मकम् ॥१४-५३-११॥
viddhi mahyaṃ sutaṃ dharmamagrajaṃ dvijasattama। mānasaṃ dayitaṃ vipra sarvabhūtadayātmakam ॥14-53-11॥
[विद्धि (viddhi) - know; मхьम् (mahyaṃ) - to me; सुतम् (sutaṃ) - son; धर्ममग्रजम् (dharmam-agrajam) - elder brother of Dharma; द्विजसत्तम (dvajasattama) - best of twice-born; मानसम् (mānasam) - born of mind; दयितम् (dayitam) - beloved; विप्र (vipra) - brāhmaṇa; सर्वभूतदयात्मकम् (sarva-bhūta-dayā-ātmakam) - whose nature is compassion to all beings;]
(Know to me, O best of twice-born, the son, elder brother of Dharma, mind-born, beloved brāhmaṇa, whose nature is compassion to all beings.)
O best of brāhmaṇas, know my son, the elder brother of Dharma, who is mind-born and beloved, to be of the nature of compassion to all beings. (14-53-11)
तत्राहं वर्तमानैश्च निवृत्तैश्चैव मानवैः। बह्वीः संसरमाणो वै योनीर्हि द्विजसत्तम ॥१४-५३-१२॥
tatrāhaṁ vartamānaiś ca nivṛttaiś caiva mānavaiḥ। bahvīḥ saṁsaramāṇo vai yonīr hi dvijasattama॥14-53-12॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; अहम् (aham) - I; वर्तमानैः (vartamānaiḥ) - with present (ones); च (ca) - and; निवृत्तैः (nivṛttaiḥ) - with departed (ones); च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; मानवैः (mānavaiḥ) - with men (humans); बह्वीः (bahvīḥ) - many; संसरमाणः (saṁsaramāṇaḥ) - wandering; वै (vai) - indeed; योनीः (yonīḥ) - wombs (births, forms of existence); हि (hi) - indeed; द्विजसत्तम (dvijasattama) - O best of the twice-born;]
(There I, with present and indeed departed men, wandering through many wombs indeed, O best of the twice-born.)
O best of the twice-born, there I have wandered through many births along with both present and departed men. (14-53-12)
धर्मसंरक्षणार्थाय धर्मसंस्थापनाय च। तैस्तैर्वेषैश्च रूपैश्च त्रिषु लोकेषु भार्गव ॥१४-५३-१३॥
dharmasaṃrakṣaṇārthāya dharmasaṃsthāpanāya ca। taistairveṣaiś ca rūpaiś ca triṣu lokeṣu bhārgava ॥14-53-13॥
[धर्मसंरक्षणार्थाय (dharmasaṃrakṣaṇārthāya) - for the purpose of protecting dharma; धर्मसंस्थापनाय (dharmasaṃsthāpanāya) - for establishing dharma; च (ca) - and; तैस्तैः (taistaiḥ) - by those various; वेषैः (veṣaiḥ) - forms (appearances); च (ca) - and; रूपैः (rūpaiḥ) - manifestations (forms); च (ca) - and; त्रिषु (triṣu) - in three; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - worlds; भार्गव (bhārgava) - O Bhārgava;]
(For the purpose of protecting dharma, for establishing dharma, and by those various forms and appearances and manifestations, in the three worlds, O Bhārgava.)
O Bhārgava, for the protection and establishment of dharma, assuming various forms and manifestations in the three worlds. (14-53-13)
अहं विष्णुरहं ब्रह्मा शक्रोऽथ प्रभवाप्ययः। भूतग्रामस्य सर्वस्य स्रष्टा संहार एव च ॥१४-५३-१४॥
ahaṃ viṣṇur ahaṃ brahmā śakro'tha prabhavāpyayaḥ। bhūtagrāmasya sarvasya sraṣṭā saṃhāra eva ca॥14-53-14॥
[अहम् (aham) - I; विष्णुः (viṣṇuḥ) - Viṣṇu; अहम् (aham) - I; ब्रह्मा (brahmā) - Brahmā; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Indra; अथ (atha) - and; प्रभवाप्ययः (prabhavāpyayaḥ) - origin and dissolution; भूतग्रामस्य (bhūtagrāmasya) - of the multitude of beings; सर्वस्य (sarvasya) - of all; स्रष्टा (sraṣṭā) - creator; संहारः (saṃhāraḥ) - destruction; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and;]
(I am Viṣṇu, I am Brahmā, Indra and (I am) origin and dissolution; of all the multitude of beings, (I am the) creator and indeed (the) destruction and.)
I am Viṣṇu, I am Brahmā, I am Indra, and I am both the origin and dissolution; I am the creator and indeed the destroyer of all beings. (14-53-14)
अधर्मे वर्तमानानां सर्वेषामहमप्युत। धर्मस्य सेतुं बध्नामि चलिते चलिते युगे ॥ तास्ता योनीः प्रविश्याहं प्रजानां हितकाम्यया ॥१४-५३-१५॥
adharme vartamānānāṁ sarveṣām aham apy uta। dharmasya setuṁ badhnāmi calite calite yuge॥ tās tā yonīḥ praviśyāham prajānāṁ hitakāmyayā॥14-53-15॥
[अधर्मे (adharme) - in unrighteousness; वर्तमानानां (vartamānānāṁ) - of those abiding; सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - of all; अहम् (aham) - I; अपि (api) - also; उत (uta) - indeed; धर्मस्य (dharmasya) - of righteousness; सेतुं (setum) - bridge; बध्नामि (badhnāmi) - I bind (make); चलिते (calite) - having declined; चलिते (calite) - having declined; युगे (yuge) - in age; तास्ता (tās tā) - those various; योनीः (yonīḥ) - births; प्रविश्य (praviśya) - having entered; अहम् (aham) - I; प्रजानाम् (prajānām) - of beings; हितकाम्यया (hitakāmyayā) - with the desire for welfare;]
(Of all abiding in unrighteousness, I indeed also bind (make) a bridge of righteousness, in age after age having declined. Having entered those various births, I, with desire for the welfare of beings.)
When all are abiding in unrighteousness, I too indeed establish a bridge of righteousness every time the ages decline. Entering such various births, I act for the welfare of living beings. (14-53-15)
यदा त्वहं देवयोनौ वर्तामि भृगुनन्दन। तदाहं देववत्सर्वमाचरामि न संशयः ॥१४-५३-१६॥
yadā tvahaṁ devayonau vartāmi bhṛgunandana. tadāhaṁ devavatsarvamācarāmi na saṁśayaḥ ॥14-53-16॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; त्व (tv) - but; अहम् (aham) - I; देवयोनौ (devayonau) - in divine womb; वर्तामि (vartāmi) - I exist; भृगुनन्दन (bhṛgunandana) - O descendent of Bhṛgu; तदा (tadā) - then; अहम् (aham) - I; देववत् (devavat) - like a god; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; आचरामि (ācarāmi) - I perform; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṁśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(When but I in divine womb exist, O descendent of Bhṛgu, then I like a god all perform, not doubt.)
O descendent of Bhṛgu, when I exist in the divine womb, then I perform all actions like a god—there is no doubt about this. (14-53-16)
यदा गन्धर्वयोनौ तु वर्तामि भृगुनन्दन। तदा गन्धर्ववच्चेष्टाः सर्वाश्चेष्टामि भार्गव ॥१४-५३-१७॥
yadā gandharvayonau tu vartāmi bhṛgunandana। tadā gandharvavacceṣṭāḥ sarvāśceṣṭāmi bhārgava ॥14-53-17॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; गन्धर्वयोनौ (gandharvayonau) - in the womb/species of Gandharvas; तु (tu) - but; वर्तामि (vartāmi) - I exist; भृगुनन्दन (bhṛgunandana) - O descendant of Bhṛgu; तदा (tadā) - then; गन्धर्ववत् (gandharvavat) - like a Gandharva; चेष्टाः (ceṣṭāḥ) - actions; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; चेष्टामि (ceṣṭāmi) - I act; भार्गव (bhārgava) - O Bhārgava;]
(When in the Gandharva womb but I exist, O descendant of Bhṛgu, then like a Gandharva all actions I act, O Bhārgava.)
O descendant of Bhṛgu, when I exist in the Gandharva womb, then, O Bhārgava, I perform all actions like a Gandharva. (14-53-17)
नागयोनौ यदा चैव तदा वर्तामि नागवत्। यक्षराक्षसयोनीश्च यथावद्विचराम्यहम् ॥१४-५३-१८॥
nāgayonau yadā caiva tadā vartāmi nāgavat। yakṣarākṣasayonīśca yathāvad vicarāmyaham ॥14-53-18॥
[नागयोनौ (nāgayonau) - in the species of nāgas; यदा (yadā) - when; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; तदा (tadā) - then; वर्तामि (vartāmi) - I act; I exist; नागवत् (nägavat) - like a nāga; यक्षराक्षसयोनीः (yakṣarākṣasayonīḥ) - species of yakṣas and rākṣasas; च (ca) - and; यथावद् (yathāvad) - appropriately; as is proper; विचरामि (vicarāmi) - I wander; I move; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(In the species of nāgas, when indeed, then I exist like a nāga; in the species of yakṣas and rākṣasas, and appropriately I wander, I.)
When I am in the nāga species, then I exist like a nāga; and in the yakṣa and rākṣasa species, I move about as is proper. (14-53-18)
मानुष्ये वर्तमाने तु कृपणं याचिता मया। न च ते जातसंमोहा वचो गृह्णन्ति मे हितम् ॥१४-५३-१९॥
mānuṣye vartamāne tu kṛpaṇaṃ yācitā mayā | na ca te jātasammohā vaco gṛhṇanti me hitam ॥14-53-19॥
[मानुष्ये (mānuṣye) - in human existence; वर्तमाने (vartamāne) - while existing; तु (tu) - but; कृपणं (kṛpaṇam) - miserable; याचिता (yācitā) - begged; मया (mayā) - by me; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - they; जातसंमोहा (jātasammohā) - having become deluded; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; गृह्णन्ति (gṛhṇanti) - accept; मे (me) - my; हितम् (hitam) - beneficial;]
(In human existence, while existing but miserable, begged by me; not and they, having become deluded, words accept my beneficial.)
While I begged those who are miserable in human existence, they, being deluded, do not accept my beneficial words. (14-53-19)
भयं च महदुद्दिश्य त्रासिताः कुरवो मया। क्रुद्धेव भूत्वा च पुनर्यथावदनुदर्शिताः ॥१४-५३-२०॥
bhayaṃ ca mahad uddiśya trāsitāḥ kuravo mayā। kruddha iva bhūtvā ca punar yathāvat anudarśitāḥ ॥14-53-20॥
[भयं (bhayam) - fear; च (ca) - and; महत् (mahat) - great; उद्दिश्य (uddiśya) - having intended; त्रासिताः (trāsitāḥ) - frightened; कुरवः (kuravaḥ) - the Kurus; मया (mayā) - by me; क्रुद्धा (kruddha) - angry; इव (iva) - as if; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; च (ca) - and; पुनर् (punar) - again; यथावत् (yathāvat) - properly; अनुदर्शिताः (anudarśitāḥ) - properly shown;]
(And by me, having intended great fear, the Kurus were frightened; having become as if angry and again properly shown.)
The Kurus were frightened by me, having deliberately caused great fear; I acted as if angry and then properly revealed myself again. (14-53-20)
तेऽधर्मेणेह संयुक्ताः परीताः कालधर्मणा। धर्मेण निहता युद्धे गताः स्वर्गं न संशयः ॥१४-५३-२१॥
te'dharmeṇa iha saṁyuktāḥ parītāḥ kāladharmaṇā। dharmeṇa nihatā yuddhe gatāḥ svargaṁ na saṁśayaḥ ॥14-53-21॥
[ते (te) - they; अधर्मेण (adharmeṇa) - by unrighteousness; इह (iha) - here; संयुक्ताः (saṁyuktāḥ) - joined; परीताः (parītāḥ) - overpowered; कालधर्मणा (kāladharmaṇā) - by the Law of Time; धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - by righteousness; निहताः (nihatāḥ) - slain; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; गताः (gatāḥ) - have gone; स्वर्गं (svargaṁ) - to heaven; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṁśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(They, by unrighteousness here joined, overpowered by the Law of Time, by righteousness slain in battle, have gone to heaven, not (is there) doubt.)
Those who, being joined to unrighteousness here and overpowered by the Law of Time, were slain in battle by righteousness, have gone to heaven; there is no doubt. (14-53-21)
लोकेषु पाण्डवाश्चैव गताः ख्यातिं द्विजोत्तम। एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं यन्मां त्वं परिपृच्छसि ॥१४-५३-२२॥
lokeṣu pāṇḍavāścaiva gatāḥ khyātiṃ dvijottama। etatte sarvam ākhyātaṃ yan māṃ tvaṃ paripṛcchasi ॥14-53-22॥
[लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - in worlds; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - certainly; गताः (gatāḥ) - have attained; ख्यातिं (khyātiṃ) - fame; द्विजोत्तम (dvijottama) - O best of twice-born; एतत् (etat) - this; ते (te) - to you; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; आख्यातम् (ākhyātam) - is told; यत् (yat) - which; माम् (mām) - me; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; परिपृच्छसि (paripṛcchasi) - ask;]
(In worlds the Pāṇḍavas indeed have attained fame, O best of twice-born. This to you all is told which me you ask.)
O best of the twice-born, the Pāṇḍavas have indeed attained fame in the worlds. All this which you ask me has been told to you. (14-53-22)
