abhijānāmi jagataḥ kartāraṃ tvāṃ janārdana. nūnaṃ bhavatprasādo' yamiti me nāsti saṃśayaḥ ॥14-54-1॥
[अभिजानामि (abhijānāmi) - I recognize; जगतः (jagataḥ) - of the world; कर्तारं (kartāram) - creator; त्वां (tvām) - you; जनार्दन (janārdana) - O Janardana; नूनं (nūnam) - truly; भवत्प्रसादः (bhavatprasādaḥ) - your grace; अयम् (ayam) - this; इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - to me; नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(I recognize of the world creator you, O Janardana. Truly, your grace this thus to me there is not doubt.)
O Janardana, I recognize you as the creator of the world. Truly, this is your grace—of this, I have no doubt. (14-54-1)
चित्तं च सुप्रसन्नं मे त्वद्भावगतमच्युत। विनिवृत्तश्च मे कोप इति विद्धि परन्तप ॥१४-५४-२॥
cittaṃ ca suprasannaṃ me tvadbhāva-gatam acyuta। vinivṛttaś ca me kopa iti viddhi parantapa॥14-54-2॥
[चित्तम् (cittam) - mind; च (ca) - and; सुप्रसन्नम् (suprasannam) - very serene; मे (me) - my; त्वद्भावगतं (tvad-bhāva-gatam) - absorbed in feeling for you; अच्युत (acyuta) - O Acyuta (undecaying one); विनिवृत्तः (vinivṛttaḥ) - withdrawn; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - my; कोपः (kopaḥ) - anger; इति (iti) - thus; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; परन्तप (parantapa) - O scorcher of foes;]
(And my mind, very serene, my, absorbed in feeling for you, O Acyuta; and withdrawn, my, anger, thus, know, O scorcher of foes.)
Know, O Acyuta, that my mind is very serene, absorbed in devotion to you, and that my anger has been withdrawn, O scorcher of foes. (14-54-2)
यदि त्वनुग्रहं कञ्चित्त्वत्तोऽर्होऽहं जनार्दन। द्रष्टुमिच्छामि ते रूपमैश्वरं तन्निदर्शय ॥१४-५४-३॥
yadi tvanugrahaṃ kañcit tvatto 'rho 'haṃ janārdana. draṣṭum icchāmi te rūpam aiśvaraṃ tan nidarśaya ॥14-54-3॥

(If your favour any from you (I am) worthy, O Janārdana, to see I desire your form divine, that show.)
O Janārdana, if I am in any way worthy of your favour from you, I wish to see your divine form—show me that. (14-54-3)

tataḥ sa tasmai prītātmā darśayāmāsa tadvapuḥ। śāśvataṃ vaiṣṇavaṃ dhīmān dadṛśe yaddhanañjayaḥ॥14-54-4॥

(Then he, with a pleased mind, showed to him that form, the eternal Viṣṇu form, which the wise Dhanañjaya saw.)

(He saw the great-souled one, universal-form, mighty-armed. Astonishment and attained the brāhmaṇa, that having seen the form divine.)

(O creator of the universe; salutation to you; let it be; whose your form such as this; by your feet your earth pervaded; by your head and covered sky.)
O Viśvakarman, salutations to you! Such is your form, by whose feet the earth is pervaded and by whose head the sky is covered. (14-54-6)
द्यावापृथिव्योर्यन्मध्यं जठरेण तदावृतम्। भुजाभ्यामावृताश्चाशास्त्वमिदं सर्वमच्युत ॥१४-५४-७॥
dyāvāpṛthivyor yan madhyaṃ jaṭhareṇa tad āvṛtam। bhujābhyām āvṛtāś ca āśās tvam idaṃ sarvam acyuta॥14-54-7॥
[द्यावापृथिव्योः (dyāvāpṛthivyoḥ) - of heaven and earth; यत् (yat) - which; मध्यं (madhyaṃ) - middle; जठरेण (jaṭhareṇa) - by (your) belly; तद् (tad) - that; आवृतम् (āvṛtam) - covered; भुजाभ्याम् (bhujābhyām) - by (your) two arms; आवृताः (āvṛtāḥ) - covered; च (ca) - and; आशास् (āśās) - you support; त्वम् (tvam) - you; इदं (idaṃ) - this; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; अच्युत (acyuta) - O Acyuta;]
(Of heaven and earth, which middle by belly that covered; by two arms covered and you support you this all, O Acyuta.)
O Acyuta, that which is the middle of heaven and earth is covered by your belly; and with your two arms, you support and cover this entire universe.
संहरस्व पुनर्देव रूपमक्षय्यमुत्तमम्। पुनस्त्वां स्वेन रूपेण द्रष्टुमिच्छामि शाश्वतम् ॥१४-५४-८॥
saṁharasva punar deva rūpam akṣayy am uttamam। punas tvām svena rūpeṇa draṣṭum icchāmi śāśvatam ॥14-54-8॥

(Withdraw again, O Lord, the imperishable supreme form. Again, I desire to see you by your own eternal form.)
O Lord, withdraw again your supreme imperishable form. I desire to see you once more in your own eternal form. (14-54-8)

(To him, the serene-minded Govinda, O Janamejaya, said, "Choose a boon." Then, to him, Uttaṅka said this.)
O Janamejaya, Govinda with a serene mind said to him, "Choose a boon." Then, Uttaṅka spoke these words to him. (14-54-9)
पर्याप्त एष एवाद्य वरस्त्वत्तो महाद्युते। यत्ते रूपमिदं कृष्ण पश्यामि प्रभवाप्ययम् ॥१४-५४-१०॥
paryāpta eṣa evādya varastvatto mahādyute। yat te rūpam idaṁ kṛṣṇa paśyāmi prabhavāpyayam ॥14-54-10॥
[पर्याप्त (paryāpta) - sufficient; enough; एष (eṣa) - this; एव (eva) - indeed; certainly; अद्य (adya) - today; now; वरः (varaḥ) - boon; favor; त्वत्तः (tvattaḥ) - from you; महाद्युते (mahādyute) - O greatly radiant one; यत् (yat) - that which; ते (te) - your; रुपम् (rūpam) - form; इदं (idaṁ) - this; कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - O Kṛṣṇa; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; प्रभवाप्ययम् (prabhavāpyayam) - source and dissolution;]
(Sufficient, this indeed today, boon from you, O greatly radiant one. That, your form, this, O Kṛṣṇa, I see (as) the source and dissolution.)
This boon from you today is sufficient, O greatly radiant one. That form of yours, O Kṛṣṇa, I see as the source and dissolution. (14-54-10)
तमब्रवीत्पुनः कृष्णो मा त्वमत्र विचारय। अवश्यमेतत्कर्तव्यममोघं दर्शनं मम ॥१४-५४-११॥
tam abravīt punaḥ kṛṣṇo mā tvam atra vicāraya। avaśyam etat kartavyam amoghaṃ darśanaṃ mama ॥14-54-11॥

(Him spoke again Kṛṣṇa, "Do not you here deliberate. Certainly this must be done, my infallible sight." (14-54-11))
Kṛṣṇa again said to him, "Do not deliberate here. This certainly must be done; my sight is unfailing." (14-54-11)

avaśyakaraṇīyaṃ vai yadyetanmanyase vibho। toyamicchāmi yatreṣṭaṃ maruṣvetaddhi durlabham ॥14-54-12॥
[अवश्यकरणीयं (avaśyakaraṇīyaṃ) - to be accomplished without fail; वै (vai) - indeed; यद्येतत् (yadyetat) - if this; मन्यसे (manyase) - you consider; विभो (vibho) - O lord; तोयम् (toyam) - water; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I desire; यत्र (yatra) - where; इष्टम् (iṣṭam) - desired; मरुष्व् (maruṣv) - in deserts; एतत् (etat) - this; हि (hi) - indeed; दुर्लभम् (durlabham) - difficult to obtain;]
(To be accomplished without fail indeed, if this you consider, O lord; water I desire, where desired, in deserts this indeed is difficult to obtain.)
O lord, if you consider this necessary to be accomplished, I desire water at the desired place, for in the deserts this is indeed difficult to obtain. (14-54-12)

(Then, having withdrawn that radiance, the Lord said to Uttaṅka: 'When the worship is to be performed, I am to be meditated upon thus.' Having said this, he went to Dvārakā.)

(Then at some time, the revered Uttaṅka, with desire for water, thirsty, wandered in the desert, and remembered Acyuta.)

ततो दिग्वाससं धीमान्मातङ्गं मलपङ्किनम्। अपश्यत मरौ तस्मिञ्श्वयूथपरिवारितम् ॥१४-५४-१५॥
tato digvāsasaṃ dhīmān mātaṅgaṃ malapaṅkinam | apaśyata marau tasmiñśvayūthaparivāritam ॥14-54-15॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; दिग्वाससं (digvāsasam) - clothed in the directions (naked); धीमान् (dhīmān) - wise; मातङ्गम् (mātaṅgam) - elephant; मलपङ्किनम् (malapaṅkinam) - covered with filth and mire; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - he saw; मरौ (marau) - in the desert; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - there; श्वयूथपरिवारितम् (śvayūthaparivāritam) - surrounded by a pack of dogs;]
(Then the wise (one) saw an elephant, naked, covered with filth and mire, there in the desert, surrounded by a pack of dogs.)
Then the wise man saw, in that desert, an elephant who was naked and dirty, covered with filth and mire, and surrounded by a pack of dogs. (14-54-15)
भीषणं बद्धनिस्त्रिंशं बाणकार्मुकधारिणम्। तस्याधः स्रोतसोऽपश्यद्वारि भूरि द्विजोत्तमः ॥१४-५४-१६॥
bhīṣaṇaṃ baddhanistriṃśaṃ bāṇakārmukadhāriṇam। tasyādhaḥ srotaso'paśyad vāri bhūri dvijottamaḥ॥14-54-16॥
[भीषणम् (bhīṣaṇam) - terrible; बद्धनिस्त्रिंशम् (baddhanistriṃśam) - with a sword fastened (at the side); बाणकार्मुकधारिणम् (bāṇakārmukadhāriṇam) - bearing arrows and a bow; तस्य (tasya) - his; अधः (adhaḥ) - below; स्रोतसः (srotasaḥ) - of the current (of the river); अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - saw; वारि (vāri) - water; भूरि (bhūri) - much; द्विजोत्तमः (dvijottamaḥ) - the best among twice-born (Brahmin);]
(The best among the twice-born saw much water below the current, terrible, with sword fastened, bearing arrows and a bow.)
The eminent Brahmin saw a great amount of water below the current, along with a terrible figure bearing a sword, arrows, and a bow. (14-54-16)
स्मरन्नेव च तं प्राह मातङ्गः प्रहसन्निव। एह्युत्तङ्क प्रतीच्छस्व मत्तो वारि भृगूद्वह ॥ कृपा हि मे सुमहती त्वां दृष्ट्वा तृट्समाहतम् ॥१४-५४-१७॥
smaranneva ca taṃ prāha mātaṅgaḥ prahasanniva। ehyuttaṅka pratīcchasva matto vāri bhṛgūdvaha ॥ kṛpā hi me sumahatī tvāṃ dṛṣṭvā tṛṭ-samāhatam ॥14-54-17॥
[स्मरन्नेव (smarann eva) - remembering indeed; च (ca) - and; तं (taṃ) - him; प्राह (prāha) - said; मातङ्गः (mātaṅgaḥ) - the elephant; प्रहसन्निव (prahasann iva) - as if smiling; एहि (ehi) - come; उत्तङ्क (uttaṅka) - Uttanka; प्रतीच्छस्व (pratīcchasva) - accept (imperative); मत्तः (mattaḥ) - from me; वारि (vāri) - water; भृगूद्वह (bhṛgūdvaha) - O carrier of Bhrigu (descendant of Bhrigu); कृपा (kṛpā) - compassion; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (me) - of me; my; सुमहती (sumahatī) - very great; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; तृट्समाहतम् (tṛṭ-samāhatam) - afflicted by thirst;]
(Remembering indeed, and him said the elephant as if smiling. "Come, Uttanka, accept from me water, O carrier of Bhrigu." Compassion indeed of me very great having seen you afflicted by thirst.)
The elephant, as if smiling and recalling him, said: "Come, Uttanka, receive water from me, O carrier of Bhrigu. Indeed, my compassion is very great, having seen you afflicted by thirst." (14-54-17)
इत्युक्तस्तेन स मुनिस्तत्तोयं नाभ्यनन्दत। चिक्षेप च स तं धीमान्वाग्भिरुग्राभिरच्युतम् ॥१४-५४-१८॥

(Again and again the elephant said to him thus: "Drink." And he did not drink, being angry with his agitated inner self.)
Repeatedly, the elephant said to him, "Drink." But, filled with anger and an agitated mind, he did not drink. (14-54-19)
स तथा निश्चयात्तेन प्रत्याख्यातो महात्मना। श्वभिः सह महाराज तत्रैवान्तरधीयत ॥१४-५४-२०॥
sa tathā niścayāttenā pratyākhyāto mahātmanā। śvabhiḥ saha mahārāja tatraivāntaradhīyata ॥14-54-20॥
[स (sa) - he; तथा (tathā) - thus; निश्चयात् (niścayāt) - with determination; तेन (tena) - by him; प्रत्याख्यातः (pratyākhyātaḥ) - rejected; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - by the great-souled one; श्वभिः (śvabhiḥ) - with the dogs; सह (saha) - together with; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; तत्रैव (tatraiva) - there itself; अन्तरधीयत (antaradhīyata) - disappeared;]
(He thus, with determination, by him, rejected by the great-souled one, with the dogs, together, O great king, there itself disappeared.)
He, O great king, thus being rejected with resolve by the great-souled one, disappeared there itself together with the dogs. (14-54-20)
उत्तङ्कस्तं तथा दृष्ट्वा ततो व्रीडितमानसः। मेने प्रलब्धमात्मानं कृष्णेनामित्रघातिना ॥१४-५४-२१॥
uttaṅkastaṃ tathā dṛṣṭvā tato vrīḍitamānasaḥ। mene pralabdhamātmānaṃ kṛṣṇenāmitraghātinā ॥14-54-21॥
[उत्तङ्कः (uttaṅkaḥ) - Uttaṅka (proper name); तं (taṃ) - him; तथा (tathā) - thus; in that way; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; after seeing; ततः (tataḥ) - then; thereafter; व्रीडितमानसः (vrīḍitamānasaḥ) - having a shamed mind; ashamed; मेने (mene) - he thought; he considered; प्रलब्धम् (pralabdham) - deceived; mocked; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - himself; कृष्णेन (kṛṣṇena) - by Kṛṣṇa; अमित्रघातिना (amitraghātinā) - the destroyer of foes;]
(Uttaṅka, him thus having seen, then (with) a shamed mind, thought himself deceived by Kṛṣṇa, the destroyer of enemies.)
Uttaṅka, seeing him that way, then, feeling ashamed, thought that Kṛṣṇa, the destroyer of enemies, had deceived him. (14-54-21)
अथ तेनैव मार्गेण शङ्खचक्रगदाधरः। आजगाम महाबाहुरुत्तङ्कश्चैनमब्रवीत् ॥१४-५४-२२॥
atha tenaiva mārgeṇa śaṅkhacakragadādharaḥ। ājagāma mahābāhuruttaṅkaś cainam abravīt ॥14-54-22॥

(Then by that very path, the bearer of conch, discus, and mace, came, the mighty-armed, and Uttanka spoke to him.)

na yuktaṃ tādṛśaṃ dātuṃ tvayā puruṣasattama। salilaṃ vipramukhyebhyo mātaṅgasrotasā vibho ॥14-54-23॥

(Not proper such to give by you, O best of men, water to the chief Brāhmaṇas by the elephant's stream, O excellent one.)
It is not proper for you, O best of men, to give such water to the chief Brāhmaṇas by the elephant's stream, O excellent one. (14-54-23)
इत्युक्तवचनं धीमान्महाबुद्धिर्जनार्दनः। उत्तङ्कं श्लक्ष्णया वाचा सान्त्वयन्निदमब्रवीत् ॥१४-५४-२४॥
ityukta-vacanaṁ dhīmān mahā-buddhir janārdanaḥ। uttaṅkaṁ ślakṣṇayā vācā sāntvayan idam abravīt ॥14-54-24॥
[इत्युक्तवचनम् (ityukta-vacanam) - thus-(having been)-spoken-word; धीमान् (dhīmān) - intelligent; महाबुद्धिः (mahā-buddhiḥ) - great-wisdom; जनार्दनः (janārdanaḥ) - Janardana (epithet of Kṛṣṇa); उत्तङ्कम् (uttaṅkam) - Uttanka; श्लक्ष्णया (ślakṣṇayā) - with gentle; वाचा (vācā) - speech; सान्त्वयन् (sāntvayan) - soothing; इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(Thus, having been addressed, the intelligent, greatly wise Janardana, soothing Uttanka with gentle speech, spoke this.)

यादृशेनेह रूपेण योग्यं दातुं वृतेन वै। तादृशं खलु मे दत्तं त्वं तु तन्नावबुध्यसे ॥१४-५४-२५॥
yādṛśeneha rūpeṇa yogyaṃ dātuṃ vṛtena vai। tādṛśaṃ khalu me dattaṃ tvaṃ tu tannāvabudhyase॥14-54-25॥
[यादृशेन (yādṛśena) - by what kind of; by whichever sort of; by whatever sort of; by which; इह (iha) - here; रूपेण (rūpeṇa) - form; by the form; योग्यं (yogyaṃ) - suitable; fit; proper; दातुं (dātuṃ) - to give; वृतेन (vṛtena) - by the vow; by the chosen manner; वै (vai) - indeed; truly; तादृशं (tādṛśaṃ) - of that kind; such; खलु (khalu) - indeed; certainly; मे (me) - by me; दत्तं (dattaṃ) - given; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; तु (tu) - but; तत् (tat) - that; न (na) - not; अवबुध्यसे (avabudhyase) - you understand; you perceive;]
(By whatever sort of form here suitable to give, by the vow indeed, such indeed by me (is) given, you but that do not understand.)
Whatever sort of form here is properly to be given according to the vow, that very thing has truly been given by me, but you do not understand that. (14-54-25)
मया त्वदर्थमुक्तो हि वज्रपाणिः पुरंदरः। उत्तङ्कायामृतं देहि तोयरूपमिति प्रभुः ॥१४-५४-२६॥
mayā tvadarthamukto hi vajrapāṇiḥ puraṁdaraḥ। uttaṅkāyāmṛtaṁ dehi toyarūpamiti prabhuḥ ॥14-54-26॥
[मया (mayā) - by me; त्वदर्थम् (tvadartham) - for your sake; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - has been told; हि (hi) - indeed; वज्रपाणिः (vajrapāṇiḥ) - Vajra-holder; पुरंदरः (puraṁdaraḥ) - Purandara (Indra); उत्तङ्काय (uttaṅkāya) - to Uttanka; अमृतं (amṛtam) - nectar; देहि (dehi) - give; तोयरूपम् (toyarūpam) - in the form of water; इति (iti) - thus; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord;]
(By me, for your sake, has indeed Vajrapāṇi, Purandara, been told: 'To Uttanka, give nectar in the form of water,' thus, the lord.)
Vajrapāṇi Purandara (Indra) has, in fact, been told by me on your behalf: 'Give nectar in the form of water to Uttanka,' so said the lord. (14-54-26)
स मामुवाच देवेन्द्रो न मर्त्योऽमर्त्यतां व्रजेत्। अन्यमस्मै वरं देहीत्यसकृद्भृगुनन्दन ॥१४-५४-२७॥
sa mām uvāca devendro na martyo 'amartyatāṃ vrajet। anyam asmai varaṃ dehīti asakṛd bhṛgunandana ॥14-54-27॥
[स (sa) - he; माम् (mām) - to me; उवाच (uvāca) - said; देवेन्द्रः (devendraḥ) - Indra (lord of the gods); न (na) - not; मर्त्यः (martyaḥ) - a mortal; अमर्त्यता (amartyatāṃ) - immortality; व्रजेत् (vrajet) - may attain; अन्यम् (anyam) - another; अस्मै (asmai) - to him; वरम् (varam) - boon; देहि (dehi) - give; इति (iti) - thus; असकृत् (asakṛt) - repeatedly; भृगुनन्दन (bhṛgunandana) - O son of Bṛgu;]
(He to me said Indra, not a mortal immortality may attain; another to him boon give thus repeatedly, O son of Bṛgu.)
Indra said to me, "A mortal cannot attain immortality; repeatedly give him another boon instead, O son of Bṛgu." (14-54-27)
अमृतं देयमित्येव मयोक्तः स शचीपतिः। स मां प्रसाद्य देवेन्द्रः पुनरेवेदमब्रवीत् ॥१४-५४-२८॥
amṛtaṃ deyamityeva mayoktaḥ sa śacīpatiḥ। sa māṃ prasādya devendraḥ punarevedamabravīt ॥14-54-28॥
[अमृतम् (amṛtam) - nectar; देयम् (deyam) - to be given; इति (iti) - thus; एव (eva) - indeed; मया (mayā) - by me; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - was spoken; सः (sa) - he; शचीपतिः (śacīpatiḥ) - lord of Śacī; सः (sa) - he; माम् (mām) - me; प्रसाद्य (prasādya) - having pleased; देवेन्द्रः (devendraḥ) - Indra; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Nectar to be given thus indeed by me was spoken; he, the lord of Śacī — he, having pleased me, Indra, again indeed this said.)
“Nectar is to be given”—thus indeed I spoke, and that Śacī’s lord (Indra), having pleased me, Indra, again spoke this. (14-54-28)
यदि देयमवश्यं वै मातङ्गोऽहं महाद्युते। भूत्वामृतं प्रदास्यामि भार्गवाय महात्मने ॥१४-५४-२९॥
yadi deyam avaśyaṁ vai mātaṅgo'haṁ mahādyute। bhūtvāmṛtaṁ pradāsyāmi bhārgavāya mahātmane॥14-54-29॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; देयम् (deyam) - should be given; अवश्यम् (avaśyam) - certainly; वै (vai) - indeed; मातङ्गः (mātaṅgaḥ) - an elephant; अहम् (aham) - I; महाद्युते (mahādyute) - O greatly radiant one; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; अमृतम् (amṛtam) - nectar; प्रदास्यामि (pradāsyāmi) - I shall give; भार्गवाय (bhārgavāya) - to Bhārgava; महात्मने (mahātmane) - to the great-souled;]
(If it must be given indeed, I, an elephant, O greatly radiant one, having become nectar, will give (it) to Bhārgava, to the great-souled one.)
If it must indeed be given, O greatly radiant one, I, as an elephant, will become nectar and give it to the great Bhārgava. (14-54-29)
यद्येवं प्रतिगृह्णाति भार्गवोऽमृतमद्य वै। प्रदातुमेष गच्छामि भार्गवायामृतं प्रभो ॥ प्रत्याख्यातस्त्वहं तेन न दद्यामिति भार्गव ॥१४-५४-३०॥
yadyevaṃ pratigṛhṇāti bhārgavo'mṛtam adya vai। pradātum eṣa gacchāmi bhārgavāyāmṛtaṃ prabho॥ pratyākhyātas tvahaṃ tena na dadyāmiti bhārgava॥14-54-30॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; प्रतिगृह्णाति (pratigṛhṇāti) - accepts; भार्गवः (bhārgavaḥ) - Bhargava; (the descendant of Bhṛgu, usually referring to a sage—here, a proper noun); अमृतम् (amṛtam) - nectar of immortality; अद्य (adya) - today; वै (vai) - indeed; प्रदातुम् (pradātum) - to give; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this (one); गच्छामि (gacchāmi) - I go; भार्गवाय (bhārgavāya) - to Bhargava; अमृतम् (amṛtam) - nectar of immortality; प्रभो (prabho) - O Lord; प्रत्याख्यातः (pratyākhyātaḥ) - rejected; त्व् (tv) - indeed I; अहम् (aham) - I; तेन (tena) - by him; न (na) - not; दद्याम् (dadyām) - shall give; इति (iti) - thus; भार्गव (bhārgava) - O Bhargava;]
(If thus accepts Bhargava nectar of immortality today indeed; to give this one goes to Bhargava nectar of immortality, O Lord. Rejected indeed I by him, not shall give thus, O Bhargava.)
If Bhargava accepts the nectar of immortality today, indeed, then I go to give this nectar to Bhargava, O Lord. But I have been rejected by him; he said, 'I shall not give,' O Bhargava. (14-54-30)
स तथा समयं कृत्वा तेन रूपेण वासवः। उपस्थितस्त्वया चापि प्रत्याख्यातोऽमृतं ददत् ॥ चण्डालरूपी भगवान्सुमहांस्ते व्यतिक्रमः ॥१४-५४-३१॥
sa tathā samayaṃ kṛtvā tena rūpeṇa vāsavaḥ। upasthitaḥ tvayā ca api pratyākhyātaḥ amṛtaṃ dadat। caṇḍāla-rūpī bhagavān su-mahān te vyatikramaḥ॥14-54-31॥
[स (sa) - he; तथा (tathā) - thus; समयं (samayaṃ) - agreement; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; तेन (tena) - in that; रूपेण (rūpeṇa) - form; वासवः (vāsavaḥ) - Indra; उपस्थितः (upasthitaḥ) - was present; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; प्रत्याख्यातः (pratyākhyātaḥ) - rejected; अमृतं (amṛtam) - nectar; ददत् (dadat) - while giving; चण्डालरूपी (caṇḍāla-rūpī) - in the form of a caṇḍāla; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Lord; सुमहान् (su-mahān) - very great; ते (te) - your; व्यतिक्रमः (vyatikramaḥ) - transgression;]
(He thus, agreement having made, in that form Indra, was present; by you also rejected nectar while giving. In the form of a caṇḍāla, the Lord, very great, your transgression.)
He, having thus made an agreement, Indra appeared in that form; even as he offered nectar, he was rejected by you. The Lord, in the form of a caṇḍāla—this was a very great transgression of yours. (14-54-31)
यत्तु शक्यं मया कर्तुं भूय एव तवेप्सितम्। तोयेप्सां तव दुर्धर्ष करिष्ये सफलामहम् ॥१४-५४-३२॥
yattu śakyaṃ mayā kartuṃ bhūya eva tavepsitam। toyepsāṃ tava durdharṣa kariṣye saphalāmaham ॥14-54-32॥
[यत्तु (yattu) - but what; शक्यं (śakyaṃ) - possible; मया (mayā) - by me; कर्तुं (kartuṃ) - to do; भूय (bhūya) - more; एव (eva) - indeed; तव (tava) - of you; इप्सितम् (ipsitam) - desired; तोयेप्सां (toyepsāṃ) - desire for water; तव (tava) - of you; दुर्धर्ष (durdharṣa) - irresistible; करिष्ये (kariṣye) - I will make; सफलाम् (saphalām) - fruitful; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(But what is possible by me to do, more indeed, your desired; desire for water of you irresistible I will make fruitful I.)
But whatever else is possible for me to do, I will surely fulfill your further desire; I will make your yearning for water, O irresistible one, successful. (14-54-32)
येष्वहःसु तव ब्रह्मन्सलिलेच्छा भविष्यति। तदा मरौ भविष्यन्ति जलपूर्णाः पयोधराः ॥१४-५४-३३॥
yeṣu ahaḥsu tava brahman salile icchā bhaviṣyati। tadā marau bhaviṣyanti jala-pūrṇāḥ payo-dharāḥ॥14-54-33॥
[येषु (yeṣu) - in which; (locative plural of 'yaḥ') अहःसु (ahaḥsu) - days; (locative plural of 'ahaḥ') तव (tava) - your; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; (vocative singular) सलिलेषु (salileṣu) - in waters; (locative plural of 'salila') इच्छा (icchā) - desire; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - (it) will be; (future third person singular of 'bhū') तदा (tadā) - then; मरौ (marau) - in the desert; (locative singular of 'mara', sandhi for 'maru') भविष्यन्ति (bhaviṣyanti) - they will be; (future third person plural of 'bhū') जलपूर्णाः (jala-pūrṇāḥ) - filled with water; पयोधराः (payo-dharāḥ) - clouds; (literally: bearers of water, commonly 'clouds');]
(In which days, your, O Brahman, in waters, desire will be. Then, in desert, there will be clouds filled with water.)
O Brahman, on those days when you desire water, then in the desert there will be clouds full of water. (14-54-33)
रसवच्च प्रदास्यन्ति ते तोयं भृगुनन्दन। उत्तङ्कमेघा इत्युक्ताः ख्यातिं यास्यन्ति चापि ते ॥१४-५४-३४॥
rasavac pradāsyanti te toyaṁ bhṛgunandana। uttaṅkameghā ityuktāḥ khyātiṁ yāsyanti cāpi te ॥14-54-34॥
[रसवच्च (rasavat-ca) - like sap; and; प्रदास्यन्ति (pradāsyanti) - they will give forth; ते (te) - they; तोयं (toyam) - water; भृगुनन्दन (bhṛgunandana) - O son of Bhṛgu; उत्तङ्कमेघाः (uttaṅkameghāḥ) - Uttanka clouds; इति (iti) - thus; उक्ताः (uktāḥ) - called; ख्यातिं (khyātim) - fame; यास्यन्ति (yāsyanti) - will attain; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; ते (te) - they;]
(Like sap, they will give forth water, O son of Bhṛgu. Called 'Uttanka clouds,' they also will attain fame.)
O son of Bhṛgu, they will give forth water like sap. Those called 'Uttanka clouds' will also attain fame. (14-54-34)
इत्युक्तः प्रीतिमान्विप्रः कृष्णेन स बभूव ह। अद्याप्युत्तङ्कमेघाश्च मरौ वर्षन्ति भारत ॥१४-५४-३५॥
ity-uktaḥ prītimān vipraḥ kṛṣṇena sa babhūva ha। adyāpy uttaṅka-meghāś ca marau varṣanti bhārata॥14-54-35॥
[इति-उक्तः (iti-uktaḥ) - thus addressed; प्रीतिमान् (prītimān) - joyful; विप्रः (vipraḥ) - brahmin; कृष्णेन (kṛṣṇena) - by Kṛṣṇa; स (sa) - he; बभूव (babhūva) - became; ह (ha) - indeed; अद्यापि (adyāpi) - even today; उत्तङ्क-मेघाः (uttaṅka-meghāḥ) - Uttaṅka's clouds; च (ca) - and; मरोः (marau) - in the desert; वर्षन्ति (varṣanti) - rain; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Thus addressed, joyful the brahmin by Kṛṣṇa he became indeed. Even today Uttaṅka's clouds and in the desert rain, O Bhārata.)
Thus addressed by Kṛṣṇa, the joyful brahmin became so indeed. Even today, O Bhārata, the clouds of Uttaṅka rain in the desert. (14-54-35)
