उत्तङ्कः केन तपसा संयुक्तः सुमहातपाः। यः शापं दातुकामोऽभूद्विष्णवे प्रभविष्णवे ॥१४-५५-१॥
uttaṅkaḥ kena tapasā saṁyuktaḥ sumahātapāḥ। yaḥ śāpaṁ dātukāmo'bhūdviṣṇave prabhaviṣṇave॥14-55-1॥

By what austerity was Uttaṅka, of great austerity, enabled, who became desirous to pronounce a curse on Viṣṇu, the all-powerful Viṣṇu? (14-55-1)

उत्तङ्को महता युक्तस्तपसा जनमेजय। गुरुभक्तः स तेजस्वी नान्यं कञ्चिदपूजयत् ॥१४-५५-२॥
uttaṅko mahatā yuktastapasā janamejaya। gurubhaktaḥ sa tejasvī nānyaṃ kañcidapūjayat ॥14-55-2॥

(Uttaṅka endowed with great austerity, O Janamejaya, he devoted to the teacher, full of energy, not any other person honored.)
Uttaṅka, endowed with great austerity and devoted to his teacher, O Janamejaya, was energetic and honored no one else. (14-55-2)
सर्वेषामृषिपुत्राणामेष चासीन्मनोरथः। औत्तङ्कीं गुरुवृत्तिं वै प्राप्नुयामिति भारत ॥१४-५५-३॥
sarveṣām ṛṣiputrāṇām eṣa ca āsīn manorathaḥ। auttaṅkīṃ guruvṛttiṃ vai prāpnuyām iti bhārata ॥14-55-3॥

(Of all the sons of sages, this was the wish: indeed, "May we obtain the conduct towards the teacher pertaining to Uttaṅka," thus, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, of all the sons of sages, this was their wish: "May we indeed attain the conduct toward the teacher as was that of Uttaṅka." (14-55-3)
गौतमस्य तु शिष्याणां बहूनां जनमेजय। उत्तङ्केऽभ्यधिका प्रीतिः स्नेहश्चैवाभवत्तदा ॥१४-५५-४॥
gautamasya tu śiṣyāṇāṃ bahūnāṃ janamejaya। uttaṅke'bhyadhikā prītiḥ snehaścaivābhavattadā ॥14-55-4॥
[गौतमस्य (gautamasya) - of Gautama; तु (tu) - but; शिष्याणां (śiṣyāṇāṃ) - of the disciples; बहूनां (bahūnāṃ) - of many; जनमेजय (janamejaya) - O Janamejaya; उत्तङ्के (uttaṅke) - in (regard to) Uttaṅka; अभ्यधिका (abhyadhikā) - greater; प्रीतिः (prītiḥ) - affection; स्नेहः (snehaḥ) - love; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; अभवत् (abhavat) - arose; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Of Gautama but of the disciples many, O Janamejaya, in Uttaṅka greater affection and love indeed arose then.)
But, O Janamejaya, among Gautama's many disciples, a greater affection and love arose for Uttaṅka at that time. (14-55-4)
स तस्य दमशौचाभ्यां विक्रान्तेन च कर्मणा। सम्यक्चैवोपचारेण गौतमः प्रीतिमानभूत् ॥१४-५५-५॥
sa tasya damaśaucābhyāṁ vikrāntena ca karmaṇā। samyak caiva upacāreṇa gautamaḥ prītimān abhūt ॥14-55-5॥
[स (sa) - he; तस्य (tasya) - of him; दमशौचाभ्यां (damaśaucābhyām) - by restraint and purity; विक्रान्तेन (vikrāntena) - by heroic; च (ca) - and; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by deed; सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; उपचारेण (upacāreṇa) - by service; गौतमः (gautamaḥ) - Gautama; प्रीतिमान् (prītimān) - having delight; अभूत् (abhūt) - became;]
(He, of him, by restraint and purity, by heroic deed, and by proper service indeed, Gautama having delight became.)
Gautama became pleased with him due to his restraint and purity, heroic deeds, and proper service. (14-55-5)
अथ शिष्यसहस्राणि समनुज्ञाय गौतमः। उत्तङ्कं परया प्रीत्या नाभ्यनुज्ञातुमैच्छत ॥१४-५५-६॥
atha śiṣyasahasrāṇi samanugñāya gautamaḥ. uttaṅkaṃ parayā prītyā nābhyanugñātum-aicchat ॥14-55-6॥
[अथ (atha) - then; शिष्यसहस्राणि (śiṣyasahasrāṇi) - thousands of disciples; समनुज्ञाय (samanugñāya) - having duly given leave; गौतमः (gautamaḥ) - Gautama; उत्तङ्कं (uttaṅkam) - Uttaṅka (proper noun, accusative); परया (parayā) - with utmost; प्रीत्या (prītyā) - affection; न (na) - not; अभ्यनुज्ञातुम् (abhy-anugñātum) - to grant leave (to release); ऐच्छत (aicchat) - wished;]
(Then, having duly given leave to thousands of disciples, Gautama, with utmost affection, did not wish to grant leave to Uttaṅka.)
Then, after granting leave to thousands of disciples, Gautama, out of great affection, did not wish to let Uttaṅka go. (14-55-6)
तं क्रमेण जरा तात प्रतिपेदे महामुनिम्। न चान्वबुध्यत तदा स मुनिर्गुरुवत्सलः ॥१४-५५-७॥
taṃ krameṇa jarā tāta pratipede mahāmunim। na cānvabudhyata tadā sa munir guruvatsalaḥ॥14-55-7॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; क्रमेण (krameṇa) - gradually; जरा (jarā) - old age; तात (tāta) - O dear; प्रतिपेदे (pratipede) - approached; महामुनिम् (mahāmunim) - great sage; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अन्वबुध्यत (anvabudhyata) - perceived; तदा (tadā) - then; स (sa) - he; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; गुरुवत्सलः (guruvatsalaḥ) - affectionate toward his teacher;]
(Him gradually old age, O dear, approached, the great sage. Not and perceived then he sage affectionate toward his teacher.)
O dear, gradually old age approached that great sage. But at that time, the sage, devoted to his teacher, did not notice it. (14-55-7)
ततः कदाचिद्राजेन्द्र काष्ठान्यानयितुं ययौ। उत्तङ्कः काष्ठभारं च महान्तं समुपानयत् ॥१४-५५-८॥
tataḥ kadācid rājendra kāṣṭhāni ānayat-um yayau। uttaṅkaḥ kāṣṭha-bhāraṃ ca mahāntam samupānayat ॥14-55-8॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; कदाचित् (kadācit) - once; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; काष्ठानि (kāṣṭhāni) - wood pieces; आनयितुम् (ānayitum) - to bring; ययौ (yayau) - went; उत्तङ्कः (uttaṅkaḥ) - Uttaṅka; काष्ठभारम् (kāṣṭha-bhāram) - burden of wood; च (ca) - and; महान्तम् (mahāntam) - great; समुपानयत् (samupānayat) - completely brought;]
(Then once, O king, (someone) went to bring wood pieces. Uttaṅka completely brought a great burden of wood as well.)
Then once, O king, Uttaṅka went to fetch wood, and he brought back a very great load of wood. (14-55-8)
स तु भाराभिभूतात्मा काष्ठभारमरिंदम। निष्पिपेष क्षितौ राजन्परिश्रान्तो बुभुक्षितः ॥१४-५५-९॥
sa tu bhārābhibhūtātmā kāṣṭhabhāram ariṃdama। niṣpipeṣa kṣitau rājan pariśrānto bubhukṣitaḥ ॥14-55-9॥
[स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; भाराभिभूतात्मा (bhārābhibhūtātmā) - with self (ātmā) overcome (abhibhūta) by a burden (bhāra); काष्ठभारम् (kāṣṭhabhāram) - wood (kāṣṭha) burden (bhāram); अरिंदम (ariṃdama) - O subduer of enemies; निष्पिपेष (niṣpipeṣa) - he crushed; क्षितौ (kṣitau) - on the ground; राजन् (rājan) - O king; परिश्रान्तः (pariśrāntaḥ) - tired; बुभुक्षितः (bubhukṣitaḥ) - hungry;]
(He but with self overcome by burden, the wood burden, O subduer of enemies, crushed on the ground, O king, tired, hungry.)
But he, overwhelmed by the burden, carrying the load of wood, O subduer of enemies, exhausted and hungry, crushed it on the ground, O king. (14-55-9)
तस्य काष्ठे विलग्नाभूज्जटा रूप्यसमप्रभा। ततः काष्ठैः सह तदा पपात धरणीतले ॥१४-५५-१०॥
tasya kāṣṭhe vilagnābhūt jaṭā rūpyasamaprabhā. tataḥ kāṣṭhaiḥ saha tadā papāta dharaṇītale ॥14-55-10॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; his; काष्ठे (kāṣṭhe) - on the wood; विलग्नाभूज्जटा (vilagnābhūt jaṭā) - the matted hair became stuck; रूप्यसमप्रभा (rūpyasamaprabhā) - having a luster like silver; ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; काष्ठैः (kāṣṭhaiḥ) - with the woods; with the wood pieces; सह (saha) - together with; along with; तदा (tadā) - then; at that time; पपात (papāta) - fell down; धरणीतले (dharaṇītale) - on the surface of the earth;]
(His matted hair, having a luster like silver, became stuck on the wood. Then, together with the woods, at that time, (it) fell down on the surface of the earth.)

ततः स भारनिष्पिष्टः क्षुधाविष्टश्च भार्गवः। दृष्ट्वा तां वयसोऽवस्थां रुरोदार्तस्वरं तदा ॥१४-५५-११॥
tataḥ sa bhāra-niṣpiṣṭaḥ kṣudhā-āviṣṭaś ca bhārgavaḥ। dṛṣṭvā tāṃ vayasaḥ avasthām ruroda ārta-svaram tadā ॥14-55-11॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; भारनिष्पिष्टः (bhāra-niṣpiṣṭaḥ) - crushed by (a) burden; क्षुधाविष्टः (kṣudhā-āviṣṭaḥ) - overcome by hunger; च (ca) - and; भार्गवः (bhārgavaḥ) - Bhārgava (descendant of Bhṛgu); दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; तां (tām) - her; वयसोऽवस्थां (vayasaḥ avasthām) - state (avasthām) of age (vayasaḥ); रुरोद (ruroda) - cried; आर्तस्वरं (ārta-svaram) - with a distressed voice; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Then he, crushed by burden and overcome by hunger, Bhārgava, having seen her state of age, cried with a distressed voice then.)
Then Bhārgava, crushed by burden and overcome by hunger, upon seeing her aged condition, cried out in a distressed voice at that time. (14-55-11)
ततो गुरुसुता तस्य पद्मपत्रनिभेक्षणा। जग्राहाश्रूणि सुश्रोणी करेण पृथुलोचना ॥ पितुर्नियोगाद्धर्मज्ञा शिरसावनता तदा ॥१४-५५-१२॥
tato gurusutā tasya padmapatranibhekṣaṇā। jagrāhāśrūṇi suśroṇī kareṇa pṛthulocanā ॥ piturniyogāddharmajñā śirasāvanatā tadā ॥14-55-12॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; गुरुसुता (gurusutā) - the teacher's daughter; तस्य (tasya) - his; पद्मपत्रनिभेक्षणा (padmapatra-nibhekṣaṇā) - she whose eyes resemble lotus petals; जग्राह (jagrāha) - took; आश्रूणि (āśrūṇi) - the tears; सुश्रोणी (suśroṇī) - the beautiful-hipped; करेण (kareṇa) - with (her) hand; पृथुलोचना (pṛthu-locanā) - large-eyed (woman); पितुः (pituḥ) - of her father; नियोगात् (niyogāt) - by the instruction; धर्मज्ञा (dharmajñā) - knowing righteousness; शिरसा (śirasā) - with (her) head; अवनता (avanatā) - bowed down; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Then the teacher's daughter, she whose eyes resemble lotus petals, took the tears, the beautiful-hipped (one), with (her) hand, the large-eyed (woman); by the instruction of her father, knowing righteousness, with (her) head bowed down, then.)
Then the teacher's daughter, whose eyes resembled lotus petals, the large-eyed and beautiful-hipped maiden, by her father's instruction and knowing what is right, bowed her head and took the tears with her hand. (14-55-12)
तस्या निपेततुर्दग्धौ करौ तैरश्रुबिन्दुभिः। न हि तानश्रुपातान्वै शक्ता धारयितुं मही ॥१४-५५-१३॥
tasyā nipetaturdagdhau karau tairaśrubindubhiḥ. na hi tānaśrupātān vai śaktā dhārayituṃ mahī ॥14-55-13॥
[तस्या (tasyāḥ) - her (genitive singular feminine); निपेततुर्दग्धौ (nipetatur dagdhau) - fell, burnt (dual, referring to both hands); करौ (karau) - hands (dual); तैः (taiḥ) - by those; अश्रुबिन्दुभिः (aśru-bindubhiḥ) - with tear-drops; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; तान् (tān) - those; अश्रुपातान् (aśru-pātān) - falls of tears; वै (vai) - indeed; शक्ता (śaktā) - able; धारयितुम् (dhārayitum) - to hold; मही (mahī) - the earth;]
(Her burnt hands fell down with those tear-drops. Indeed, the earth was not able to hold those falls of tears.)
Her burnt hands fell to the ground with those tear-drops. Indeed, the earth was unable to bear the torrents of her tears. (14-55-13)
गौतमस्त्वब्रवीद्विप्रमुत्तङ्कं प्रीतमानसः। कस्मात्तात तवाद्येह शोकोत्तरमिदं मनः ॥ स स्वैरं ब्रूहि विप्रर्षे श्रोतुमिच्छामि ते वचः ॥१४-५५-१४॥
gautamas tv abravīd vipram uttaṅkaṃ prītamānasaḥ। kasmāt tāta tavādyeha śokottaram idaṃ manaḥ॥ sa svairaṃ brūhi viprarṣe śrotum icchāmi te vacaḥ॥14-55-14॥

(Gautama but spoke to the Brāhmaṇa Uttaṅka with a pleased mind. Why, dear one, is your mind today here after surpassing grief, this mind? That, freely speak, O best among Brāhmaṇas; I wish to hear your word. (14-55-14))
But Gautama, with a pleased mind, said to the Brāhmaṇa Uttaṅka: 'Why, dear one, is your mind today here appearing as if it has overcome grief? Tell me that freely, O best among Brāhmaṇas; I wish to hear your words.' (14-55-14)

भवद्गतेन मनसा भवत्प्रियचिकीर्षया। भवद्भक्तिगतेनेह भवद्भावानुगेन च ॥१४-५५-१५॥
bhavad-gatena manasā bhavat-priya-cikīrṣayā। bhavad-bhakti-gatena iha bhavad-bhāva-anugena ca ॥14-55-15॥
[भवद्गतेन (bhavad-gatena) - with (a mind) fixed on you; मनसा (manasā) - with the mind; भवत्प्रियचिकीर्षया (bhavat-priya-cikīrṣayā) - with the desire to do what is dear to you; भवद्भक्तिगतेन (bhavad-bhakti-gatena) - with (the mind) absorbed in devotion to you; इह (iha) - here; भवद्भावानुगेन (bhavad-bhāva-anugena) - following your nature; च (ca) - and;]
(With a mind fixed on you, with the desire to do what is dear to you, with the mind absorbed in devotion to you here, and following your nature.)
With a mind fixed on you, motivated by the desire to do what pleases you, abiding here with devotion to you, and following your nature. (14-55-15)
जरेयं नावबुद्धा मे नाभिज्ञातं सुखं च मे। शतवर्षोषितं हि त्वं न मामभ्यनुजानथाः ॥१४-५५-१६॥
jareyaṁ nāvabuddhā me nābhijñātaṁ sukhaṁ ca me। śatavarṣoṣitaṁ hi tvaṁ na māmabhyanujānathāḥ ॥14-55-16॥
[जरेयं (jareyaṁ) - may I grow old; न (na) - not; अवबुद्धा (avabuddhā) - understood; मे (me) - by me; न (na) - not; अभिज्ञातं (abhijñātaṁ) - known; सुखं (sukhaṁ) - happiness; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - by me; शतवर्षोषितं (śatavarṣoṣitaṁ) - having dwelt (with me) for a hundred years; हि (hi) - for; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; न (na) - not; माम् (mām) - me; अभ्यनुजानथाः (abhyanujānathāḥ) - permit (me);]
(May I grow old, not understood by me, nor known happiness by me; having dwelt for a hundred years, indeed, you do not permit me.)
May I grow old, with neither understanding nor known happiness by me; though you have lived with me a hundred years, you do not permit me. (14-55-16)
भवता ह्यभ्यनुज्ञाताः शिष्याः प्रत्यवरा मया। उपपन्ना द्विजश्रेष्ठ शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ॥१४-५५-१७॥
bhavatā hy abhyanujñātāḥ śiṣyāḥ pratyavarā mayā। upapannā dvija-śreṣṭha śataśo 'tha sahasraśaḥ ॥14-55-17॥
[भवता (bhavatā) - by you; by your honor; हि (hi) - indeed; अभ्यनुज्ञाताः (abhyanujñātāḥ) - permitted; approved; शिष्याः (śiṣyāḥ) - students; प्रत्यवरा (pratyavarā) - inferior (ones); मया (mayā) - by me; उपपन्नाः (upapannāḥ) - have been accepted; have occurred; द्विजश्रेष्ठ (dvija-śreṣṭha) - O best of twice-born; शतशः (śataśaḥ) - by hundreds; अथ (atha) - and; also; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by thousands;]
(By you indeed permitted students, inferior ones by me have been accepted, O best of the twice-born, by hundreds and by thousands.)
O best of the twice-born, at your permission, I have accepted inferior students—by the hundreds and by the thousands. (14-55-17)

त्वत्प्रीतियुक्तेन मया गुरुशुश्रूषया तव। व्यतिक्रामन्महान्कालो नावबुद्धो द्विजर्षभ ॥१४-५५-१८॥
tvat-prīti-yuktena mayā guru-śuśrūṣayā tava। vyatikrāman mahān kālaḥ na avabuddhaḥ dvija-ṛṣabha ॥14-55-18॥
[त्वत्प्रीतियुक्तेन (tvat-prīti-yuktena) - with (that which is) joined to your pleasure; मया (mayā) - by me; गुरुशुश्रूषया (guru-śuśrūṣayā) - by service to the guru; तव (tava) - your; व्यतिक्रामन् (vyatikrāman) - passing; महान्कालः (mahān kālaḥ) - great time (long time); न (na) - not; अवबुद्धः (avabuddhaḥ) - (perceived, noticed; द्विजर्षभ (dvija-ṛṣabha) - O best of the twice-born;]
(With service to the guru, which was joined to your pleasure, by me, a great period of time, passing, was not noticed, O best of the twice-born.)
O best of the twice-born, by me, who served the guru with devotion joined to your pleasure, a great period of time passed unnoticed. (14-55-18)
किं त्वद्य यदि ते श्रद्धा गमनं प्रति भार्गव। अनुज्ञां गृह्य मत्तस्त्वं गृहान्गच्छस्व मा चिरम् ॥१४-५५-१९॥
kiṁ tvadya yadi te śraddhā gamanaṁ prati bhārgava। anujñāṁ gṛhya mattastvaṁ gṛhāngacchasva mā ciram ॥14-55-19॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; त्वद्य (tvadya) - today; यदि (yadi) - if; ते (te) - your; श्रद्धा (śraddhā) - faith; गमनं (gamanaṁ) - departure; प्रति (prati) - towards; भार्गव (bhārgava) - O Bhārgava; अनुज्ञां (anujñāṁ) - permission; गृह्य (gṛhya) - having received; मत्तः (mattaḥ) - from me; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; गृहान् (gṛhān) - to the houses; गच्छस्व (gacchasva) - go; मा (mā) - not; चिरम् (ciram) - long;]
(What today, if your faith is towards departure, O Bhārgava, having received permission from me, you go to the houses, do not (stay) long.)
O Bhārgava, if today you have faith in departing, then, having received permission from me, go home without delay. (14-55-19)

gurvarthaṁ kaṁ prayacchāmi brūhi tvaṁ dvijasattama। tam upākṛtya gaccheyam anujñātaḥ tvayā vibho ॥14-55-20॥
[गुर्वर्थं (gurvartham) - for the sake of the teacher; कं (kaṁ) - what; प्रयच्छामि (prayacchāmi) - shall I give; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - speak; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; द्विजसत्तम (dvijasattama) - O best of the twice-born; तम् (tam) - him; उपाकृत्य (upākṛtya) - having served; गच्छेयम् (gaccheyam) - I may go; अनुज्ञातः (anujñātaḥ) - permitted; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; विभो (vibho) - O lord;]
(For the sake of the teacher, what shall I give? Speak, you, O best of the twice-born. Him, having served, I may go, permitted by you, O lord.)
O best of the twice-born, for the sake of the teacher, what shall I give? Please tell me, O lord; having served him, I shall go with your permission. (14-55-20)

दक्षिणा परितोषो वै गुरूणां सद्भिरुच्यते। तव ह्याचरतो ब्रह्मंस्तुष्टोऽहं वै न संशयः ॥१४-५५-२१॥
dakṣiṇā paritoṣo vai gurūṇāṁ sadbhir ucyate. tava hy ācarato brahman tuṣṭo 'haṁ vai na saṁśayaḥ ॥14-55-21॥
[दक्षिणा (dakṣiṇā) - offering; (gift to the teacher); परितोषः (paritoṣaḥ) - satisfaction; वै (vai) - indeed; गुरूणाम् (gurūṇām) - of teachers; सद्भिः (sadbhir) - by the good (people); उच्यते (ucyate) - is said; तव (tava) - your; हि (hi) - truly; आचरतः (ācarataḥ) - by performing; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; तुष्टः (tuṣṭaḥ) - satisfied; अहम् (aham) - I; वै (vai) - indeed; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṁśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(Offering indeed is said by the good to be the satisfaction of teachers. By your performing, O Brahman, I am satisfied indeed, there is no doubt.)
Offering is indeed said by the good to be the satisfaction of teachers. By your actions, O Brahman, I am truly satisfied—there is no doubt about it. (14-55-21)
इत्थं च परितुष्टं मां विजानीहि भृगूद्वह। युवा षोडशवर्षो हि यदद्य भविता भवान् ॥१४-५५-२२॥
itthaṁ ca parituṣṭaṁ māṁ vijānīhi bhṛgūdvaha। yuvā ṣoḍaśavarṣo hi yadadya bhavitā bhavān ॥14-55-22॥
[इत्थं (ittham) - thus; च (ca) - and; परितुष्टं (parituṣṭam) - satisfied; मां (mām) - me; विजानीहि (vijānīhi) - know; भृगूद्वह (bhṛgūdvaha) - O best of the Bhṛgus; युवा (yuvā) - young; षोडशवर्षो (ṣoḍaśavarṣaḥ) - sixteen-years-old; हि (hi) - indeed; यद् (yad) - that; अद्य (adya) - today; भविता (bhavitā) - will become; भवान् (bhavān) - you;]
(Thus and satisfied me know, O best of the Bhṛgus. Young, sixteen-years-old indeed that today will become you.)
Thus, know me to be satisfied, O best of the Bhṛgus. You will become a youth of sixteen years today. (14-55-22)
ददामि पत्नीं कन्यां च स्वां ते दुहितरं द्विज। एतामृते हि नान्या वै त्वत्तेजोऽर्हति सेवितुम् ॥१४-५५-२३॥
dadāmi patnīṃ kanyāṃ ca svāṃ te duhitaraṃ dvija. etām ṛte hi nānyā vai tvat-tejo-'rhati sevitum ॥14-55-23॥
[ददामि (dadāmi) - I give; पत्नीं (patnīṃ) - wife; कन्यां (kanyāṃ) - maiden; च (ca) - and; स्वां (svāṃ) - my own; ते (te) - to you; दुहितरं (duhitaraṃ) - daughter; द्विज (dvija) - O twice-born; एताम् (etām) - her; ऋते (ṛte) - except; हि (hi) - indeed; न (na) - not; अन्या (anyā) - another; वै (vai) - truly; त्वत्तेजः (tvat-tejaḥ) - your splendor; अर्हति (arhati) - is worthy; सेवितुम् (sevitum) - to be approached; ॥१४-५५-२३॥ (॥14-55-23॥) -;]
(I give wife, maiden and my own daughter to you, O twice-born. Except her, indeed, no other truly is worthy to be approached by your splendor.)
I give you my wife, maiden and daughter, O Brahmin. Truly, except for her, no other is worthy of being united with your splendor. (14-55-23)
ततस्तां प्रतिजग्राह युवा भूत्वा यशस्विनीम्। गुरुणा चाभ्यनुज्ञातो गुरुपत्नीमथाब्रवीत् ॥१४-५५-२४॥
tatastāṃ pratijagrāha yuvā bhūtvā yaśasvinīm। guruṇā cābhyanujñāto gurupatnīmathābravīt ॥14-55-24॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ताम् (tām) - her; प्रतिजग्राह (pratijagrāha) - he accepted; युवा (yuvā) - as a youth; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; यशस्विनीम् (yaśasvinīm) - illustrious (her); गुरुणा (guruṇā) - by the teacher; च (ca) - and; अभ्यनुज्ञातः (abhyanujñātaḥ) - having been permitted; गुरुपत्नीम् (gurupatnīm) - (to) the teacher's wife; अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - he spoke;]
(Then, her he accepted, becoming a youth, illustrious; by the teacher and having been permitted, to the teacher's wife then he spoke.)
Then, having become a youth, he accepted the illustrious woman; having been permitted by the teacher, he then spoke to the teacher's wife. (14-55-24)
किं भवत्यै प्रयच्छामि गुर्वर्थं विनियुङ्क्ष्व माम्। प्रियं हि तव काङ्क्षामि प्राणैरपि धनैरपि ॥१४-५५-२५॥
kiṁ bhavatyai prayacchāmi gurvarthaṁ viniyuṅkṣva mām। priyaṁ hi tava kāṅkṣāmi prāṇair api dhanair api ॥14-55-25॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; भवत्यै (bhavatyai) - to you (respected female); प्रयच्छामि (prayacchāmi) - shall I give; गुर्वर्थं (gurvartham) - for the sake of the teacher; विनियुङ्क्ष्व (viniyuṅkṣva) - appoint (me); माम् (mām) - me; प्रियं (priyam) - dear (object); हि (hi) - indeed; तव (tava) - your; काङ्क्षामि (kāṅkṣāmi) - I desire; प्राणैः (prāṇaiḥ) - with lives; अपि (api) - even; धनैः (dhanaiḥ) - with wealth; अपि (api) - even;]
(What to you shall I give? For the sake of the teacher appoint me. Dear indeed of yours I desire, with lives even, with wealth even.)
What shall I give you? For the sake of the teacher, appoint me. I indeed desire your cherished thing, even at the cost of my life or my wealth. (14-55-25)
यद्दुर्लभं हि लोकेऽस्मिन्रत्नमत्यद्भुतं भवेत्। तदानयेयं तपसा न हि मेऽत्रास्ति संशयः ॥१४-५५-२६॥
yad durlabhaṁ hi loke 'smin ratnam aty-adbhutaṁ bhavet। tad ānayeyaṁ tapasā na hi me 'tra āsti saṁśayaḥ॥14-55-26॥
[यत् (yat) - that which; दुर्लभं (durlabham) - difficult to obtain; हि (hi) - indeed; लोकेऽस्मिन् (loke 'smin) - in this world; रत्नम् (ratnam) - gem; अत्यद्भुतं (atyadbhutam) - very wonderful; भवेत् (bhavet) - should be; तत् (tat) - that; आनयेयम् (ānayeyam) - I would bring; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (me) - to me; अत्र (atra) - here; अस्ति (asti) - is; संशयः (saṁśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(That which is difficult to obtain indeed in this world, a gem very wonderful should be, that I would bring by austerity; not indeed to me here is doubt.)
Whatever extremely rare and marvelous gem there may be in this world—such a thing I am sure I can obtain through austerity. I have no doubt about this. (14-55-26)
अहल्योवाच॥

parituṣṭāsmi te putra nityaṃ bhagavatā saha। paryāptaye tadbhadraṃ te gaccha tāta yathecchakam ॥14-55-27॥
[परितुष्टास्मि (parituṣṭāsmi) - I am satisfied; ते (te) - with you; पुत्र (putra) - O son; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; भगवता (bhagavatā) - with the Lord; सह (saha) - together; पर्याप्तये (paryāptaye) - for sufficiency; तत् (tat) - that; भद्रं (bhadraṃ) - blessing; ते (te) - to you; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; तात (tāta) - O dear one; यथेच्छकम् (yathecchakam) - as you desire;]
(I am satisfied with you, O son, always, together with the Lord. For sufficiency, that blessing to you; go, O dear one, as you desire.)
I am always satisfied with you, my son, along with the Lord. May that blessing be yours; go, dear one, as you wish. (14-55-27)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

uttaṅkastu mahārāja punarevābravīdvacaḥ। ājñāpayasva māṃ mātaḥ kartavyaṃ hi priyaṃ tava॥14-55-28॥
[उत्तङ्कः (uttaṅkaḥ) - Uttaṅka; (proper noun—name of a sage); तु (tu) - but; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; (vocative); पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; वचः (vacaḥ) - word; आज्ञापयस्व (ājñāpayasva) - command; माम् (mām) - me; मातः (mātaḥ) - O mother; (vocative); कर्तव्यम् (kartavyam) - what is to be done; हि (hi) - indeed; प्रियं (priyaṃ) - dear; तव (tava) - to you;]
(But Uttaṅka, O great king, again indeed said word: "Command me, O mother, what is to be done, indeed dear to you." (14-55-28))
But Uttaṅka, O great king, again spoke words: "Instruct me, O mother, in what should be done that is dear to you." (14-55-28)

सौदासपत्न्या विदिते दिव्ये वै मणिकुण्डले। ते समानय भद्रं ते गुर्वर्थः सुकृतो भवेत् ॥१४-५५-२९॥
saudāsapatnyā vidite divye vai maṇikuṇḍale। te samānaya bhadraṃ te gurvarthaḥ sukṛto bhavet ॥14-55-29॥
[सौदासपत्न्या (saudāsapatnyā) - by Saudāsa's wife; विदिते (vidite) - having been known; दिव्ये (divye) - divine; वै (vai) - indeed; मणिकुण्डले (maṇikuṇḍale) - jeweled earrings; ते (te) - for you; समानय (samānaya) - bring; भद्रं (bhadraṃ) - auspiciousness; ते (te) - to you; गुर्वर्थः (gurvarthaḥ) - for the purpose of the teacher; सुकृतः (sukṛtaḥ) - well accomplished; भवेत् (bhavet) - may it be;]
(By Saudāsa's wife, when the divine jeweled earrings have become known, bring them for you; auspiciousness to you; for (your) teacher's purpose, may it be well accomplished.)
Once the divine jeweled earrings have become known by Saudāsa's wife, bring them for yourself; may it be auspicious for you, and may your task for the teacher be well accomplished. (14-55-29)
स तथेति प्रतिश्रुत्य जगाम जनमेजय। गुरुपत्नीप्रियार्थं वै ते समानयितुं तदा ॥१४-५५-३०॥
sa tatheti pratiśrutya jagāma janamejaya. gurupatnīpriyārthaṃ vai te samānayituṃ tadā ॥14-55-30॥
[स (sa) - he; तथेति (tatheti) - thus (so be it) – agreeing; प्रतिश्रुत्य (pratiśrutya) - having promised; जगाम (jagāma) - he went; जनमेजय (janamejaya) - Janamejaya; गुरुपत्नीप्रियार्थं (gurupatnīpriyārtham) - for the sake of the guru's wife's desire; वै (vai) - indeed; ते (te) - to her; समानयितुं (samānayitum) - to bring (to fulfill); तदा (tadā) - then;]
(He, having agreed thus, having promised, went, Janamejaya, for the sake of the guru's wife's desire indeed, to bring to her then.)
Janamejaya, having agreed and having made the promise, then went to bring for the guru's wife what she desired. (14-55-30)
स जगाम ततः शीघ्रमुत्तङ्को ब्राह्मणर्षभः। सौदासं पुरुषादं वै भिक्षितुं मणिकुण्डले ॥१४-५५-३१॥
sa jagāma tataḥ śīghram uttaṅko brāhmaṇa-ṛṣabhaḥ। saudāsaṃ puruṣādam vai bhikṣituṃ maṇi-kuṇḍale ॥14-55-31॥
[स (sa) - he; जगाम (jagāma) - went; ततः (tataḥ) - then; शीघ्रम् (śīghram) - quickly; उत्तङ्कः (uttaṅkaḥ) - Uttaṅka; ब्राह्मणर्षभः (brāhmaṇa-ṛṣabhaḥ) - the eminent Brāhmaṇa; सौदासम् (saudāsam) - to Saudāsa; पुरुषादम् (puruṣādam) - man-eater; वै (vai) - indeed; भिक्षितुम् (bhikṣitum) - to beg; मणिकुण्डले (maṇi-kuṇḍale) - bejeweled earrings;]
(He went then quickly, Uttaṅka, the eminent Brāhmaṇa, to Saudāsa, the man-eater, indeed, to beg for the bejeweled earrings.)
Then Uttaṅka, the eminent Brāhmaṇa, quickly went to Saudāsa the man-eater to beg for the bejeweled earrings. (14-55-31)
गौतमस्त्वब्रवीत्पत्नीमुत्तङ्को नाद्य दृश्यते। इति पृष्टा तमाचष्ट कुण्डलार्थं गतं तु वै ॥१४-५५-३२॥
gautamas tv abravīt patnīm uttaṅko na adya dṛśyate। iti pṛṣṭā tam ācaṣṭa kuṇḍalārthaṃ gataṃ tu vai॥14-55-32॥

(Gautama but said (to his) wife: "Uttaṅka is not seen today." Thus, having been asked, she told him: "For the sake of earrings, having gone, indeed, certainly." (14-55-32))
But Gautama said to his wife, "Uttaṅka is not seen today." When asked thus, she told him, "(He) has certainly gone for the sake of the earrings." (14-55-32)
ततः प्रोवाच पत्नीं स न ते सम्यगिदं कृतम्। शप्तः स पार्थिवो नूनं ब्राह्मणं तं वधिष्यति ॥१४-५५-३३॥
tataḥ provāca patnīṃ sa na te samyag idaṃ kṛtam। śaptaḥ sa pārthivo nūnaṃ brāhmaṇaṃ taṃ vadhiṣyati॥14-55-33॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रोवाच (provāca) - he spoke; पत्नीं (patnīṃ) - (to his) wife; स (sa) - he; न (na) - not; ते (te) - your; सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; इदं (idaṃ) - this; कृतम् (kṛtam) - has been done; शप्तः (śaptaḥ) - having been cursed; स (sa) - he; पार्थिवः (pārthivaḥ) - the king; नूनम् (nūnam) - surely; ब्राह्मणम् (brāhmaṇam) - (the) Brāhmaṇa; तम् (tam) - him; वधिष्यति (vadhiṣyati) - will kill;]
(Then he spoke to (his) wife: "Not properly by you this has been done." Having been cursed, surely that king will kill him, the Brāhmaṇa.)
Then he said to his wife, "You have not done this properly. Having been cursed, that king will surely kill the Brāhmaṇa." (14-55-33)

ajānantyā niyuktaḥ sa bhagavanbrāhmaṇo'dya me। bhavatprasādān na bhayaṁ kiñcit tasya bhaviṣyati ॥14-55-34॥
[अजानन्त्या (ajānantyā) - by one not knowing; नियुक्तः (niyuktaḥ) - appointed; स (sa) - he; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O revered one; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - brāhmaṇa; अद्य (adya) - today; मे (me) - by me; भवत् (bhavat) - your; प्रसादात् (prasādāt) - by favor; न (na) - not; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - at all; तस्य (tasya) - for him; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(By one not knowing appointed, he, O revered one, brāhmaṇa today, by me. By your favor, not fear at all for him will be.)
O revered one, the brāhmaṇa who was appointed by me today out of ignorance—by your grace, no fear at all will befall him. (14-55-34)
इत्युक्तः प्राह तां पत्नीमेवमस्त्विति गौतमः। उत्तङ्कोऽपि वने शून्ये राजानं तं ददर्श ह ॥१४-५५-३५॥
ityuktaḥ prāha tāṃ patnīm evam astv iti gautamaḥ. uttaṅko'pi vane śūnye rājānaṃ taṃ dadarśa ha ॥14-55-35॥

(Thus addressed, Gautama said to his wife, "Let it be so." Uttaṅka also, in the empty forest, saw that king indeed. (14-55-35))
