स तं दृष्ट्वा तथाभूतं राजानं घोरदर्शनम्। दीर्घश्मश्रुधरं नॄणां शोणितेन समुक्षितम् ॥१४-५६-१॥
sa taṃ dṛṣṭvā tathābhūtaṃ rājānaṃ ghoradarśanam। dīrghaśmaśrudharaṃ nṝṇāṃ śoṇitena samukṣitam ॥14-56-1॥
[स (sa) - he; तं (taṃ) - him; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; तथाभूतं (tathābhūtaṃ) - thus become; राजानं (rājānaṃ) - king; घोरदर्शनम् (ghoradarśanam) - terrible in appearance; दीर्घश्मश्रुधरं (dīrghaśmaśrudharaṃ) - wearing long beard and mustache; नॄणां (nṝṇāṃ) - of men; शोणितेन (śoṇitena) - with blood; समुक्षितम् (samukṣitam) - besmeared;]
(He, having seen him, thus become king, terrible in appearance, wearing long beard and mustache, of men, besmeared with blood.)
He saw that king, terrible in appearance, with a long beard and mustache, besmeared with the blood of men. (14-56-1)
चकार न व्यथां विप्रो राजा त्वेनमथाब्रवीत्। प्रत्युत्थाय महातेजा भयकर्ता यमोपमः ॥१४-५६-२॥
cakāra na vyathāṃ vipro rājā tvenam athābravīt। pratyutthāya mahātejā bhayakartā yamopamaḥ ॥14-56-2॥
[चकार (cakāra) - he did; न (na) - not; व्यथां (vyathām) - fear; विप्रः (vipraḥ) - the brāhmaṇa; राजा (rājā) - the king; त्व (tv) - then; एनम् (enam) - to him; अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; प्रत्युत्थाय (pratyutthāya) - having stood up; महातेजा (mahātejā) - mighty in energy; भयकर्ता (bhayakartā) - maker of fear; यमोपमः (yamopamaḥ) - like Yama;]
(He did not (experience) fear; the brāhmaṇa. The king then to him then said, having stood up, (who was) mighty in energy, maker of fear, like Yama.)
The brāhmaṇa did not become afraid. Then the king, who was mighty in energy, a maker of fear, and like Yama, stood up and spoke to him. (14-56-2)
दिष्ट्या त्वमसि कल्याण षष्ठे काले ममान्तिकम्। भक्षं मृगयमाणस्य सम्प्राप्तो द्विजसत्तम ॥१४-५६-३॥
diṣṭyā tvam asi kalyāṇa ṣaṣṭhe kāle mamāntikam। bhakṣaṃ mṛgayamāṇasya samprāpto dvijasattama ॥14-56-3॥
[दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - by fortune; by good luck; त्वम् (tvam) - you; असि (asi) - are; कल्याण (kalyāṇa) - auspicious one; षष्ठे (ṣaṣṭhe) - in the sixth; काले (kāle) - at the time; मम (mama) - my; अन्तिकम् (antikam) - nearness; close by; भक्षम् (bhakṣam) - food; prey; मृगयमाणस्य (mṛgayamāṇasya) - of the one seeking; searching; सम्प्राप्तः (samprāptaḥ) - (you) have arrived; द्विजसत्तम (dvijasattama) - O best of the twice-born;]
(By fortune you are, O auspicious one, in the sixth time close to me; food to the one seeking having arrived, O best of the twice-born.)
By good fortune, you, O auspicious one, have come near me at the sixth time as food for the seeker, O best of the twice-born. (14-56-3)
उत्तङ्क उवाच॥

राजन्गुर्वर्थिनं विद्धि चरन्तं मामिहागतम्। न च गुर्वर्थमुद्युक्तं हिंस्यमाहुर्मनीषिणः ॥१४-५६-४॥
rājan gurvarthinaṃ viddhi carantaṃ mām ihāgatam। na ca gurvartham udyuktaṃ hiṃsyam āhur manīṣiṇaḥ॥14-56-4॥
[राजन् (rājan) - O King; गुर्वर्थिनं (gurvarthinam) - seeking the purpose of the guru; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; चरन्तं (carantam) - acting; माम् (mām) - me; इह (iha) - here; आगतम् (āgatam) - arrived; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; गुर्वर्थम् (gurvartham) - for the guru's purpose; उद्युक्तं (udyuktam) - engaged in; हिंस्यम् (hiṃsyam) - should be harmed; आहुः (āhuḥ) - (they) say; मनीषिणः (manīṣiṇaḥ) - the wise;]
(O King, know me, who has come here acting for the guru's purpose. And the wise say that one who is engaged for the guru's purpose should not be harmed.)
O King, know that I have come here acting in the service of my guru. Moreover, the wise say that one engaged for the guru's purpose should not be subjected to harm. (14-56-4)

The king said.
षष्ठे काले ममाहारो विहितो द्विजसत्तम। न च शक्यः समुत्स्रष्टुं क्षुधितेन मयाद्य वै ॥१४-५६-५॥
ṣaṣṭhe kāle mamāhāro vihito dvijasattama। na ca śakyaḥ samutsraṣṭuṃ kṣudhitenamayādya vai ॥14-56-5॥
[षष्ठे काले (ṣaṣṭhe kāle) - in the sixth time; in the period; मम (mama) - my; आहारः (āhāraḥ) - food; विहितः (vihitaḥ) - arranged; prescribed; द्विजसत्तम (dvijasattama) - O best of twice-born; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; शक्यः (śakyaḥ) - possible; समुत्स्रष्टुम् (samutsraṣṭum) - to abandon; to cast away; क्षुधितेन (kṣudhitena) - by the hungry; मया (mayā) - by me; अद्य (adya) - today; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(In the sixth time, my food, O best of twice-born, is prescribed; not also possible to abandon by the hungry by me today indeed.)
O best of twice-born, my food is prescribed for the sixth time; today, being hungry, it is indeed not possible for me to abandon it. (14-56-5)

एवमस्तु महाराज समयः क्रियतां तु मे। गुर्वर्थमभिनिर्वर्त्य पुनरेष्यामि ते वशम् ॥१४-५६-६॥
evam astu mahārāja samayaḥ kriyatāṁ tu me | gurvartham abhinirvartya punar eṣyāmi te vaśam ॥14-56-6॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; समयः (samayaḥ) - agreement; क्रियताम् (kriyatām) - let (it) be made; तु (tu) - but; मे (me) - to me; गुर्वर्थम् (gurvartham) - for the purpose of (my) guru; अभिनिर्वर्त्य (abhinirvartya) - having accomplished; पुनः (punar) - again; एष्यामि (eṣyāmi) - I shall go; ते (te) - to you; वशम् (vaśam) - under control;]
(Thus let it be, O great king; agreement let be made indeed by me. Having accomplished (duty) for (my) guru, again I shall go under your control.)
So be it, O great king; let the agreement be made for me. Having fulfilled my duty for my teacher, I shall return again under your authority. (14-56-6)
संश्रुतश्च मया योऽर्थो गुरवे राजसत्तम। त्वदधीनः स राजेन्द्र तं त्वा भिक्षे नरेश्वर ॥१४-५६-७॥
saṃśrutaśca mayā yo'rtho gurave rājasattama। tvadadhīnaḥ sa rājendra taṃ tvā bhikṣe nareśvara ॥14-56-7॥
[संश्रुतः (saṃśrutaḥ) - promised; by vow; च (ca) - and; मया (mayā) - by me; यः (yaḥ) - which; अर्थः (arthaḥ) - object; intention; गुरवे (gurave) - to the preceptor; राजसत्तम (rājasattama) - O best among kings; त्वत्-अधीनः (tvat-adhīnaḥ) - dependent on you; सः (saḥ) - that; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; तम् (tam) - that object; त्वा (tvā) - from you; भिक्षे (bhikṣe) - I beg; नर-ईश्वर (nareśvara) - O lord of men;]
(And the object which has been promised by me to the preceptor, O best among kings, that (object) is dependent on you, O king; that (object) I beg from you, O lord of men.)
O best among kings, the object which I have vowed to the preceptor is dependent on you, O king. I beg that object from you, O lord of men. (14-56-7)
ददासि विप्रमुख्येभ्यस्त्वं हि रत्नानि सर्वशः। दाता त्वं च नरव्याघ्र पात्रभूतः क्षिताविह ॥१४-५६-८॥
dadāsi vipramukhyebhyas tvaṃ hi ratnāni sarvaśaḥ। dātā tvaṃ ca naravyāghra pātrabhūtaḥ kṣitāviha ॥14-56-8॥
[ददासि (dadāsi) - you give; विप्रमुख्येभ्यः (vipramukhyebhyaḥ) - to the foremost Brāhmaṇas; त्वम् (tvaṃ) - you; हि (hi) - indeed; रत्नानि (ratnāni) - gems; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - in every way; दाता (dātā) - giver; त्वम् (tvaṃ) - you; च (ca) - and; नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) - tiger among men; पात्रभूतः (pātrabhūtaḥ) - become suitable recipient; क्षितौ (kṣitau) - on earth; इह (iha) - here;]
(You give to the foremost Brāhmaṇas, indeed gems in every way. Giver you and, O tiger among men, become (a) suitable recipient here on earth.)
You give gems in all ways to the foremost Brāhmaṇas; O best of men, you are both a giver and a worthy recipient here on earth. (14-56-8)
पात्रं प्रतिग्रहे चापि विद्धि मां नृपसत्तम ॥१४-५६-८॥
pātraṁ pratigrahe cāpi viddhi māṁ nṛpasattama ॥14-56-8॥
[पात्रं (pātraṁ) - recipient; deserving one; प्रतिग्रहे (pratigrahe) - in acceptance; in receiving; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; मां (māṁ) - me; नृपसत्तम (nṛpasattama) - O best of kings;]
(Recipient in acceptance and also know me, O best of kings.)
O best of kings, know me also as the recipient in acceptance. (14-56-8)
उपाकृत्य गुरोरर्थं त्वदायत्तमरिंदम। समयेनेह राजेन्द्र पुनरेष्यामि ते वशम् ॥१४-५६-९॥
upākṛtya gurorarthaṃ tvadāyattamariṃdama। samayeneha rājendra punareṣyāmi te vaśam ॥14-56-9॥
[उपाकृत्य (upākṛtya) - having done service; गुरोः (guroḥ) - of the Guru (spiritual teacher); अर्थं (arthaṃ) - purpose; त्वदायत्तम् (tvadāyattam) - dependent on you; अरिंदम (ariṃdama) - O subduer of enemies; समयेन (samayena) - at the right time; इह (iha) - here; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एष्यामि (eṣyāmi) - I shall come; ते (te) - to your; वशम् (vaśam) - power;]
(Having performed service for the Guru's purpose, dependent on you, O subduer of enemies, at the right time here, O king, again I shall come to your power.)
O king, having done service for the Guru's purpose, which depends on you, O subduer of enemies, I will again return here and come under your control at the proper time. (14-56-9)
सत्यं ते प्रतिजानामि नात्र मिथ्यास्ति किञ्चन। अनृतं नोक्तपूर्वं मे स्वैरेष्वपि कुतोऽन्यथा ॥१४-५६-१०॥
satyaṃ te pratijānāmi nātra mithyāsti kiñcana। anṛtaṃ noktapūrvaṃ me svaireṣvapi kuto'nyathā ॥14-56-10॥
[सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; ते (te) - to you; प्रतिजानामि (pratijānāmi) - I promise; न (na) - not; अत्र (atra) - here; मिथ्या (mithyā) - falsehood; अस्ति (asti) - there is; किञ्चन (kiñcana) - anything; अनृतं (anṛtaṃ) - untruth; न (na) - not; उक्तपूर्वं (ukta-pūrvaṃ) - spoken before; मे (me) - by me; स्वैरेषु (svaireṣu) - among intimates; अपि (api) - even; कुतः (kutaḥ) - how; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise;]
(Truth to you I promise, here not falsehood there is anything. Untruth not spoken before by me among intimates even, how otherwise?)
I promise you the truth; there is nothing false here. I have never spoken untruth before, even among my own intimates—how could it be otherwise? (14-56-10)
सौदास उवाच॥

यदि मत्तस्त्वदायत्तो गुर्वर्थः कृत एव सः। यदि चास्मि प्रतिग्राह्यः साम्प्रतं तद्ब्रवीहि मे ॥१४-५६-११॥
yadi mattas tvadāyatto gurvarthaḥ kṛta eva saḥ। yadi cāsmi pratigrāhyaḥ sāmprataṃ tad bravīhi me॥14-56-11॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; मत्तः (mattaḥ) - from me; त्वदायत्तः (tvadāyattaḥ) - dependent on you; गुर्वर्थः (gurvarthaḥ) - object concerning the guru; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - done; एव (eva) - indeed; सः (saḥ) - that; यदि (yadi) - if; च (ca) - and; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; प्रतिग्राह्यः (pratigrāhyaḥ) - to be accepted; साम्प्रतम् (sāmpratam) - at present; तत् (tat) - that; ब्रवीहि (bravīhi) - tell; मे (me) - to me;]
(If from me the object concerning the guru, dependent on you, indeed that is done; if and I am to be accepted at present, that tell to me.)
If the object concerning the guru, which is dependent on you, has already been done by me, and if I am to be accepted right now, then tell me that. (14-56-11)

pratigrāhyaḥ mato me tvaṁ sadaiva puruṣarṣabha. so'haṁ tvām anusamprāpto bhikṣituṁ maṇikuṇḍale ॥14-56-12॥
[प्रतिग्राह्यः (pratigrāhyaḥ) - fit to accept; मतः (mataḥ) - regarded; मे (me) - by me; त्वम् (tvam) - you; सदैव (sadaiva) - always; पुरुषर्षभ (puruṣarṣabha) - bull among men; सः (saḥ) - that (I); अहम् (aham) - I; त्वाम् (tvām) - to you; अनुसम्प्राप्तः (anusamprāptaḥ) - approached after following; भिक्षितुम् (bhikṣitum) - to beg; मणिकुण्डले (maṇikuṇḍale) - the (pair of) jeweled earrings;]
(You are regarded by me always, O bull among men, as fit to accept. Therefore I, having approached you, to beg the jeweled earrings.)
O bull among men, you are always regarded by me as fit to accept gifts. Therefore I have come to you to beg for the jeweled earrings. (14-56-12)

patnyāste mama viprarṣe rucire maṇikuṇḍale। varayārthaṃ tvamanyaṃ vai taṃ te dāsyāmi suvrata ॥14-56-13॥
[पत्न्याः (patnyāḥ) - of (my) wife; ते (te) - your; मम (mama) - my; विप्रर्षे (viprarṣe) - O best of Brāhmaṇas; रुचिरे (rucire) - beautiful; मणिकुण्डले (maṇikuṇḍale) - jewel earrings; वरयार्थं (varayārthaṃ) - for the sake of a gift; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अन्यं (anyaṃ) - another; वै (vai) - indeed; तं (taṃ) - that; ते (te) - to you; दास्यामि (dāsyāmi) - I shall give; सुव्रत (suvrata) - O one of good vows;]
(Of (my) wife's your my O best of Brāhmaṇas beautiful jewel earrings for the sake of a gift you another indeed that to you I shall give O one of good vows.)
O best of Brāhmaṇas, these beautiful jewel earrings of my wife—I shall indeed give them to you, O one of good vows, for the sake of a gift, or else (if you wish) another (gift). (14-56-13)
उत्तङ्क उवाच॥

अलं ते व्यपदेशेन प्रमाणं यदि ते वयम्। प्रयच्छ कुण्डले मे त्वं सत्यवाग्भव पार्थिव ॥१४-५६-१४॥
alaṃ te vyapadeśena pramāṇaṃ yadi te vayam। prayaccha kuṇḍale me tvaṃ satyavāg bhava pārthiva ॥14-56-14॥
[अलं (alaṃ) - enough; ते (te) - your; (to you;) व्यपदेशेन (vyapadeśena) - by pretext; by excuse; प्रमाणं (pramāṇam) - proof; evidence; यदि (yadi) - if; ते (te) - your; वयम् (vayam) - we; प्रयच्छ (prayaccha) - give; hand over; कुण्डले (kuṇḍale) - earrings; मे (me) - to me; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; सत्यवाक् (satyavāk) - truth-speaker; one who speaks truth; भव (bhava) - be; become; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king;]
(Enough of your excuse; proof if we are yours. Give the earrings to me; you, be a truth-speaker, O king.)
Enough with your pretexts; if we are indeed yours, provide proof. Give me the earrings and be truthful, O king. (14-56-14)

ity-uktas tv abravīd rājā tam uttankaṃ punar vacaḥ. gaccha mad-vacanād devīṃ brūhi dehīti sattama ॥14-56-15॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - spoken; त्व (tv) - but; अब्रवीद् (abravīd) - said; राजा (rājā) - the king; तम् (tam) - to him; उत्तङ्कं (uttankaṃ) - Uttanka; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; मद्वचनात् (mad-vacanāt) - from my words; देवीं (devīṃ) - to the goddess; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - say; देहि (dehi) - give; इति (iti) - thus; सत्तम (sattama) - best (man);]
(Thus spoken, but the king said to him, to Uttanka, again the speech: "Go, from my words, to the goddess, say: 'Give,' thus, O best man.")
After this was spoken, the king again said to Uttanka these words: "Go, and on my behalf speak to the goddess: 'Please give (it),' O best of men." (14-56-15)
सैवमुक्ता त्वया नूनं मद्वाक्येन शुचिस्मिता। प्रदास्यति द्विजश्रेष्ठ कुण्डले ते न संशयः ॥१४-५६-१६॥
saivamuktā tvayā nūnaṃ madvākyena śucismitā। pradāsyati dvijaśreṣṭha kuṇḍale te na saṃśayaḥ॥14-56-16॥
[सा एव (sā eva) - she indeed; उक्ता (uktā) - spoken (to her); त्वया (tvayā) - by you; नूनम् (nūnam) - surely; मद्वाक्येन (mad-vākyena) - by my statement; शुचिस्मिता (śucismitā) - pure-smiling (one); प्रदास्यति (pradāsyati) - will give; द्विजश्रेष्ठ (dvijaśreṣṭha) - O best of twice-born; कुण्डले (kuṇḍale) - earrings; ते (te) - to you; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(She indeed, spoken (to her) by you, surely by my statement, pure-smiling (one), will give, O best of twice-born, earrings to you, not (is) doubt.)
She herself, whom you have addressed, O best of twice-born, will surely give you the earrings at my word, pure-smiling one; there is no doubt.

kva patnī bhavataḥ śakyā mayā draṣṭuṃ nareśvara। svayaṃ vāpi bhavān patnīṃ kimarthaṃ nopasarpati ॥14-56-17॥

(Where wife your possible by me to see, O lord of men? Personally or even you wife for what reason not approach?)
O lord of men, where is your wife who can be seen by me? Or, for what reason does even your own self not approach your wife? (14-56-17)

drakṣyate tāṃ bhavān adya kasmiṃścid vana-nirjhare। ṣaṣṭhe kāle na hi mayā sā śakyā draṣṭum adya vai॥14-56-18॥
[द्रक्ष्यते (drakṣyate) - will be seen; ताम् (tām) - her; भवान् (bhavān) - you; अद्य (adya) - today; कस्मिंश्चित् (kasmiṃścit) - at some; वननिर्झरे (vana-nirjhare) - in forest waterfall; षष्ठे (ṣaṣṭhe) - at the sixth; काले (kāle) - time; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; मया (mayā) - by me; सा (sā) - she; शक्या (śakyā) - possible; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; अद्य (adya) - today; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(Will be seen her you today at some forest waterfall; at the sixth time not indeed by me she possible to see today indeed;)
Today you will see her at some forest waterfall; at the sixth time, it is indeed not possible for me to see her today. (14-56-18)
उत्तङ्कस्तु तथोक्तः स जगाम भरतर्षभ। मदयन्तीं च दृष्ट्वा सोऽज्ञापयत्स्वं प्रयोजनम् ॥१४-५६-१९॥
uttaṅkastu tathoktaḥ sa jagāma bharatarṣabha। madayantīṃ ca dṛṣṭvā so'jñāpayatsvaṃ prayojanam ॥14-56-19॥
[उत्तङ्कः (uttaṅkaḥ) - Uttaṅka; (proper noun); तु (tu) - but; however; तथा (tathā) - thus; in that manner; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; spoken to; सः (saḥ) - he; जगाम (jagāma) - went; proceeded; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas; (vocative); मदयन्तीं (madayantīm) - Madayantī; (proper noun, accusative); च (ca) - and; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; सः (saḥ) - he; अज्ञापयत् (ajñāpayat) - made known; informed; स्वम् (svam) - his; own; प्रयोजनम् (prayojanam) - purpose; objective;]
(But Uttaṅka, thus addressed, he went, O bull among the Bharatas. And having seen Madayantī, he informed his own purpose.)
But Uttaṅka, having been thus addressed, went forth, O bull among the Bharatas; and having seen Madayantī, he conveyed his purpose to her. (14-56-19)
सौदासवचनं श्रुत्वा ततः सा पृथुलोचना। प्रत्युवाच महाबुद्धिमुत्तङ्कं जनमेजय ॥१४-५६-२०॥
saudāsavacanaṃ śrutvā tataḥ sā pṛthulocanā। pratyuvāca mahābuddhimuttaṅkaṃ janamejaya ॥14-56-20॥
[सौदासवचनं (saudāsavacanaṃ) - the words of Saudāsa; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; ततः (tataḥ) - then; सा (sā) - she; पृथुलोचना (pṛthulocanā) - the large-eyed (woman); प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; महाबुद्धिम् (mahābuddhim) - to the great-minded; उत्तङ्कं (uttaṅkam) - to Uttaṅka; जनमेजय (janamejaya) - O Janamejaya;]
(Having heard the words of Saudāsa, then she, the large-eyed one, replied to the great-minded Uttaṅka, O Janamejaya.)
O Janamejaya, after hearing the words of Saudāsa, she of large eyes then replied to the wise Uttaṅka. (14-56-20)
एवमेतन्महाब्रह्मन्नानृतं वदसेऽनघ। अभिज्ञानं तु किञ्चित्त्वं समानेतुमिहार्हसि ॥१४-५६-२१॥
evametad mahābrahman nānṛtaṃ vadas e'nagha। abhijñānaṃ tu kiñcit tvaṃ samānetum ihārhasi॥14-56-21॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; in this way; एतत् (etat) - this; महाब्रह्मन् (mahābrahman) - O great Brahman; न (na) - not; अनृतम् (anṛtam) - falsehood; वदसि (vadasi) - you speak; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one; अभिज्ञानम् (abhijñānam) - token of recognition; proof; तु (tu) - but; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - something; त्वम् (tvam) - you; समानेतु (samānetu(m)) - to bring; इह (iha) - here; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought; ॥१४-५६-२१॥ (॥14-56-21॥) - ;]
(Thus this, O great Brahman, not falsehood you speak, O sinless one. A token but something you to bring here ought (should). (14-56-21))
It is so, O great Brahman, you do not speak falsehood, O sinless one. But you should bring some token of recognition here. (14-56-21)
इमे हि दिव्ये मणिकुण्डले मे; देवाश्च यक्षाश्च महोरगाश्च। तैस्तैरुपायैः परिहर्तुकामा; श्छिद्रेषु नित्यं परितर्कयन्ति ॥१४-५६-२२॥
ime hi divye maṇikuṇḍale me; devāś ca yakṣāś ca mahoragāś ca. tais tair upāyaiḥ parihartukāmāḥ; chchidreṣu nityaṃ paritarkayanti ॥14-56-22॥
[इमे (ime) - these; हि (hi) - indeed; दिव्ये (divye) - divine; मणिकुण्डले (maṇikuṇḍale) - gem-studded earrings; मे (me) - my; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; च (ca) - and; यक्षाः (yakṣāḥ) - yakṣas; च (ca) - and; महत्-उरगाः (mahat-uragāḥ) - great serpents; च (ca) - and; तैः तैः उपायैः (taiḥ taiḥ upāyaiḥ) - by various means; परिहर्तु-कामाः (parihartu-kāmāḥ) - desirous to steal; छिद्रेषु (chchidreṣu) - in weaknesses (gaps, opportunities); नित्यम् (nityam) - always; परितर्कयन्ति (paritarkayanti) - they plot;]
(These indeed divine gem-studded earrings my; gods and yakṣas and great serpents and; by various means desirous to steal; in weaknesses always they plot.)
These divine gem-studded earrings of mine—the gods, yakṣas, and great serpents are always scheming by various means, ever plotting to steal them whenever they find an opportunity. (14-56-22)
निक्षिप्तमेतद्भुवि पन्नगास्तु; रत्नं समासाद्य परामृषेयुः। यक्षास्तथोच्छिष्टधृतं सुराश्च; निद्रावशं त्वा परिधर्षयेयुः ॥१४-५६-२३॥
nikṣiptametad bhuvi pannagās tu; ratnaṃ samāsādya parāmṛṣeyuḥ. yakṣās tatho 'cchiṣṭadhṛtaṃ surāś ca; nidrāvaśaṃ tvā paridharṣayeyuḥ ॥14-56-23॥
[निक्षिप्तम् (nikṣiptam) - thrown down; एतद् (etad) - this; भुवि (bhuvi) - on the earth; पन्नगाः (pannagāḥ) - serpents; तु (tu) - but; रत्नम् (ratnam) - jewel; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having obtained; परामृषेयुः (parāmṛṣeyuḥ) - they may touch; यक्षाः (yakṣāḥ) - yakṣas; तथा (tathā) - likewise; उच्छिष्टधृतम् (ucchiṣṭadhṛtam) - held (when) impure; सुराः (surāḥ) - gods; च (ca) - and; निद्रावशम् (nidrāvaśam) - overpowered by sleep; त्वा (tvā) - you; परिधर्षयेयुः (paridharṣayeyuḥ) - they may assail;]
(Thrown down this on the earth, serpents but obtaining the jewel may touch. Yakṣas likewise held (when) impure, and gods, overpowered by sleep, you they may assail.)
If this is thrown down on the earth, serpents may touch the jewel on obtaining it; likewise, the yakṣas (may approach) what is held when impure, and even the gods, overpowered by sleep, may assail you. (14-56-23)
छिद्रेष्वेतेषु हि सदा ह्यधृष्येषु द्विजर्षभ। देवराक्षसनागानामप्रमत्तेन धार्यते ॥१४-५६-२४॥
chidrēṣvētēṣu hi sadā hyadhṛṣyēṣu dvijarṣabha| dēvarākṣasanāgānāmapramattēna dhāryatē ॥14-56-24॥
[छिद्रेषु (chidrēṣu) - in weaknesses; in vulnerabilities; एतेषु (ētēṣu) - in these; हि (hi) - indeed; सदा (sadā) - always; हि (hi) - indeed; अधृष्येषु (adhṛṣyēṣu) - in the invulnerable; in those who cannot be attacked; द्विजर्षभ (dvijarṣabha) - O best of the twice-born; देव (dēva) - of the gods; राक्षस (rākṣasa) - of the rākṣasas (demons); नागानाम् (nāgānām) - of the nāgas (serpents); अप्रमत्तेन (apramattēna) - by the vigilant; by the careful; धार्यते (dhāryatē) - is maintained; is held; ॥१४-५६-२४॥ (॥14-56-24॥) - ;]
(In these weaknesses, indeed, always in the invulnerable, O best of the twice-born, of the gods, of the rākṣasas, and of the nāgas, by the vigilant, it is maintained.)
O best of the twice-born, among these weaknesses—even in those who are invulnerable, such as gods, rākṣasas, and nāgas—carefulness must always be maintained by vigilance. (14-56-24)
स्यन्देते हि दिवा रुक्मं रात्रौ च द्विजसत्तम। नक्तं नक्षत्रताराणां प्रभामाक्षिप्य वर्तते ॥१४-५६-२५॥
syandete hi divā rukmaṁ rātrau ca dvijasattama। naktaṁ nakṣatratārāṇāṁ prabhām ākṣipya vartate॥14-56-25॥
[स्यन्देते (syandete) - flows; हि (hi) - indeed; दिवा (divā) - by day; रुक्मं (rukmaṁ) - gold; रात्रौ (rātrau) - at night; च (ca) - and; द्विजसत्तम (dvijasattama) - O best of twice-born; नक्तं (naktaṁ) - by night; नक्षत्रताराणां (nakṣatratārāṇām) - of the stars and planets; प्रभाम् (prabhām) - light; आक्षिप्य (ākṣipya) - having withdrawn; वर्तते (vartate) - remains;]
(Flows indeed by day gold, at night and O best of twice-born, by night having withdrawn the light of stars and planets, remains.)
Indeed, gold flows by day, and by night, O best of twice-born, having withdrawn the light of the stars and planets, it remains (visible). (14-56-25)
एते ह्यामुच्य भगवन्क्षुत्पिपासाभयं कुतः। विषाग्निश्वापदेभ्यश्च भयं जातु न विद्यते ॥१४-५६-२६॥
ete hy amucya bhagavan kṣut-pipāsā-bhayam kutaḥ। viṣāgni-śvāpadebhyaś ca bhayam jātu na vidyate॥14-56-26॥
[एते (ete) - these; हि (hi) - indeed; अमुच्य (amucya) - being liberated; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O Lord; क्षुत्पिपासा (kṣut-pipāsā) - hunger and thirst; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; कुतः (kutaḥ) - whence; विष (viṣa) - poison; अग्नि (agni) - fire; श्वापदेभ्यः (śvāpadebhyaḥ) - from wild beasts; च (ca) - and; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; जातु (jātu) - ever; न (na) - not; विध्यते (vidyate) - exists;]
(These indeed, being liberated, O Lord, fear from hunger and thirst whence? From poison, fire, and wild beasts also, fear ever does not exist.)
O Lord, for these who have been liberated, how can there be fear from hunger or thirst? There is never any fear from poison, fire, or wild beasts either. (14-56-26)
ह्रस्वेन चैते आमुक्ते भवतो ह्रस्वके तदा। अनुरूपेण चामुक्ते तत्प्रमाणे हि जायतः ॥१४-५६-२७॥
hrasvena caite āmukte bhavato hrasvake tadā | anurūpeṇa cāmukte tat-pramāṇe hi jāyataḥ ||14-56-27||
[ह्रस्वेन (hrasvena) - by a short (syllable); च (ca) - and; एते (ete) - these; आमुक्ते (āmukte) - are joined (with short vowel); भवतो (bhavato) - become; ह्रस्वके (hrasvake) - shortened; तदा (tadā) - then; अनुरूपेण (anurūpeṇa) - according (in conformity); च (ca) - and; आमुक्ते (āmukte) - are joined (with); तत्प्रमाणे (tat-pramāṇe) - in that proportion; हि (hi) - indeed; जायतः (jāyataḥ) - arise;]
(By a short (syllable) and these are joined, become shortened then. According (in conformity) and joined (with), in that proportion indeed arise.)
When these are joined by a short (syllable), then they become shortened. And when joined in conformity, they arise in that proportion indeed. (14-56-27)
एवंविधे ममैते वै कुण्डले परमार्चिते। त्रिषु लोकेषु विख्याते तदभिज्ञानमानय ॥१४-५६-२८॥
evaṃvidhe mama ete vai kuṇḍale param-arcite। triṣu lokeṣu vikhyāte tad-abhijñānam ānaya॥14-56-28॥
[एवंविधे (evaṃvidhe) - of this kind; such as this; such; मम (mama) - my; एते (ete) - these; वै (vai) - indeed; truly; कुण्डले (kuṇḍale) - earrings; परमार्चिते (param-arcite) - most highly worshipped; greatly honored; त्रिषु (triṣu) - in three; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - in the worlds; विख्याते (vikhyāte) - well-known; famed; तत् (tad) - that; अभिज्ञानम् (abhijñānam) - token; sign; recognition; आनय (ānaya) - bring;]
(Of this kind, my these indeed earrings, most highly worshipped, in three worlds well-known, that token bring.)
Bring that token of recognition—my earrings of this kind, indeed, most highly revered and well-known in the three worlds. (14-56-28)
