sa mitrasahamasādya tvabhijñānamayācata. tasmai dadāvabhijñānaṃ sa cekṣvākkuvarastadā ॥14-57-1॥
[स (sa) - he; मित्रसहम् (mitrasaham) - with Mitrasaha; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having approached; त्व (tva) - your; अभिज्ञानम् (abhijñānam) - token of recognition; अयाचत (ayācata) - he requested; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; ददौ (dadau) - he gave; अभिज्ञानम् (abhijñānam) - token of recognition; सः (saḥ) - he; च (ca) - and; इक्ष्वाकुवरः (ikṣvāku-varaḥ) - the best of the Ikṣvākus; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(He, having approached with Mitrasaha, requested your token of recognition. To him the token of recognition he gave, he, and the best of the Ikṣvākus then.)
He, having approached together with Mitrasaha, requested your token of recognition. To him, the best of the Ikṣvākus then gave the token of recognition. (14-57-1)

न चैवैषा गतिः क्षेम्या न चान्या विद्यते गतिः। एतन्मे मतमाज्ञाय प्रयच्छ मणिकुण्डले ॥१४-५७-२॥
na caiva eṣā gatiḥ kṣemyā na ca anyā vidyate gatiḥ। etat me matam ājñāya prayaccha maṇikuṇḍale ॥14-57-2॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; एषा (eṣā) - this; गतिः (gatiḥ) - way; क्षेम्या (kṣemyā) - safe; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अन्या (anyā) - other; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; गतिः (gatiḥ) - way; एतत् (etat) - this; मे (me) - my; मतम् (matam) - opinion; आज्ञाय (ājñāya) - having understood; प्रयच्छ (prayaccha) - give; मणिकुण्डले (maṇikuṇḍale) - jeweled earrings;]
(Not and indeed this way (is) safe, nor does another way exist. This my opinion having understood, give the jeweled earrings.)
This way is not safe, and there is no other way. Understanding this as my opinion, hand over the jeweled earrings. (14-57-2)

ity-uktas tām uttaṅkas tu bhartur vākyam athābravīt। śrutvā ca sā tataḥ prādāt tasmai te maṇikuṇḍale ॥14-57-3॥
[इति-उक्तः (iti-uktaḥ) - thus addressed; ताम् (tām) - her; उत्तङ्कः-तु (uttaṅkaḥ tu) - Uttaṅka however; भर्तुः-वाक्यम्-अथ-अब्रवीत् (bhartuḥ vākyam atha abravīt) - master's command then he spoke; श्रुत्वा-च (śrutvā ca) - having heard and; सा (sā) - she; ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रादात्-तस्मै (prādāt tasmai) - gave to him; ते-मणिकुण्डले (te maṇikuṇḍale) - those gem earrings;]
(Thus addressed her, Uttaṅka however, the master's command then spoke. Having heard, she then gave to him those gem earrings.)

अवाप्य कुण्डले ते तु राजानं पुनरब्रवीत्। किमेतद्गुह्यवचनं श्रोतुमिच्छामि पार्थिव ॥१४-५७-४॥
avāpya kuṇḍale te tu rājānaṃ punarabravīt। kimetadguhyavacanaṃ śrotumicchāmi pārthiva ॥14-57-4॥
[अवाप्य (avāpya) - having obtained; कुण्डले (kuṇḍale) - the earrings; ते (te) - your; तु (tu) - but; राजानं (rājānam) - to the king; पुनरब्रवीत् (punar abravīt) - again spoke; किम् (kim) - what; एतद् (etad) - this; गुह्यवचनं (guhyavacanam) - secret speech; श्रोतुम् (śrotum) - to hear; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I desire; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king;]
(Having obtained your earrings, he again spoke to the king: "What is this secret message? I desire to hear, O king.")
Having taken your earrings, he then again spoke to the king: "What is this secret message? I wish to hear it, O king." (14-57-4)

प्रजा निसर्गाद्विप्रान्वै क्षत्रियाः पूजयन्ति ह। विप्रेभ्यश्चापि बहवो दोषाः प्रादुर्भवन्ति नः ॥१४-५७-५॥
prajā nisargād viprān vai kṣatriyāḥ pūjayanti ha। viprebhyaś cāpi bahavo doṣāḥ prādurbhavanti naḥ॥14-57-5॥
[प्रजा (prajā) - people; निसर्गात् (nisargāt) - by nature; विप्रान् (viprān) - brāhmaṇas; वै (vai) - indeed; क्षत्रियाः (kṣatriyāḥ) - kṣatriyas; पूजयन्ति (pūjayanti) - honor; ह (ha) - indeed; विप्रेभ्यः (viprebhyaḥ) - from the brāhmaṇas; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; दोषाः (doṣāḥ) - faults; प्रादुर्भवन्ति (prādurbhavanti) - arise; नः (naḥ) - for us;]
(People by nature brāhmaṇas indeed kṣatriyas honor indeed. From the brāhmaṇas and also many faults arise for us.)
People, by their very nature, the kṣatriyas indeed honor the brāhmaṇas. But from the brāhmaṇas also, many faults arise for us. (14-57-5)
सोऽहं द्विजेभ्यः प्रणतो विप्राद्दोषमवाप्तवान्। गतिमन्यां न पश्यामि मदयन्तीसहायवान् ॥ स्वर्गद्वारस्य गमने स्थाने चेह द्विजोत्तम ॥१४-५७-६॥
so'ham dvijebhyaḥ praṇato viprād doṣam avāptavān। gatim anyāṁ na paśyāmi madayantī-sahāya-vān ॥ svarga-dvārasya gamane sthāne ca iha dvijottama ॥14-57-6॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अहम् (aham) - I; द्विजेभ्यः (dvijebhyaḥ) - to the twice-born; प्रणतः (praṇataḥ) - bowed; विप्रात् (viprāt) - from the Brāhmaṇa; दोषम् (doṣam) - fault; अवाप्तवान् (avāptavān) - obtained; गतिम् (gatim) - path; अन्यां (anyāṁ) - another; न (na) - not; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; मदयन्ती-सहायवान् (madayantī-sahāya-vān) - having Madayantī as an assistant; स्वर्गद्वारस्य (svarga-dvārasya) - of the door of heaven; गमने (gamane) - in the going; स्थाने (sthāne) - in the place; च (ca) - and; इह (iha) - here; द्विजोत्तम (dvijottama) - O best of the twice-born;]
(He, I, having bowed to the twice-born, from the Brāhmaṇa, have obtained a fault. Another path I do not see, having Madayantī as an assistant, in the going of the door of heaven, and in the place here, O best of the twice-born. (14-57-6))
Having bowed to the twice-born, I received a fault from the Brāhmaṇa. I do not see any other path—with Madayantī's help—either for proceeding to the gate of heaven or here, O best of the twice-born. (14-57-6)
न हि राज्ञा विशेषेण विरुद्धेन द्विजातिभिः। शक्यं नृलोके संस्थातुं प्रेत्य वा सुखमेधितुम् ॥१४-५७-७॥
na hi rājñā viśeṣeṇa viruddhena dvijātibhiḥ। śakyaṃ nṛloke saṃsthātum pretya vā sukhamedhitum ॥14-57-7॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; राज्ञा (rājñā) - by the king; विशेषेण (viśeṣeṇa) - especially; विरुद्धेन (viruddhena) - opposed; द्विजातिभिः (dvijātibhiḥ) - by the twice-born (Brahmins, etc.); शक्यं (śakyaṃ) - possible; नृलोके (nṛloke) - in the world of men; संस्थातुं (saṃsthātum) - to exist; प्रेत्य (pretya) - after death; वा (vā) - or; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness; एधितुम् (edhitum) - to be attained;]
(Not indeed by the king especially opposed by the twice-born is it possible in the world of men to exist, or after death happiness to be attained.)
Certainly, a king who is especially opposed by the twice-born cannot maintain himself in this world, nor attain happiness after death. (14-57-7)
तदिष्टे ते मयैवैते दत्ते स्वे मणिकुण्डले। यः कृतस्तेऽद्य समयः सफलं तं कुरुष्व मे ॥१४-५७-८॥
tadiṣṭe te mayaivāite datte sve maṇikuṇḍale। yaḥ kṛtaste'dya samayaḥ saphalaṃ taṃ kuruṣva me ॥14-57-8॥
[तदिष्टे (tad iṣṭe) - therefore desired; ते (te) - your; मया (mayā) - by me; एव (eva) - indeed; एते (ete) - these; दत्ते (datte) - given; स्वे (sve) - own; मणिकुण्डले (maṇikuṇḍale) - jeweled earrings; यः (yaḥ) - which; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - made; ते (te) - by you; अद्य (adya) - today; समयः (samayaḥ) - agreement; सफलम् (saphalam) - successful; तम् (tam) - that; कुरुष्व (kuruṣva) - make; मे (me) - for me;]
(Therefore, the desired by you, indeed these jeweled earrings of your own, given by me. The agreement made by you today, make that successful for me.)
Therefore, these jeweled earrings of yours, which you desired, have indeed been given by me. Now make the agreement you made today successful for me. (14-57-8)

राजंस्तथेह कर्तास्मि पुनरेष्यामि ते वशम्। प्रश्नं तु कञ्चित्प्रष्टुं त्वां व्यवसिष्ये परन्तप ॥१४-५७-९॥
rājan tatha iha kartā asmi punaḥ eṣyāmi te vaśam। praśnam tu kañcit praṣṭum tvām vyavasiṣye parantapa॥14-57-9॥
[राजन् (rājan) - O king; तथा (tathā) - thus; इह (iha) - here; कर्तास्मि (kartā asmi) - I am the doer; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एष्यामि (eṣyāmi) - I shall come; ते (te) - to you; वशम् (vaśam) - under control; प्रश्नम् (praśnam) - question; तु (tu) - but; कञ्चित् (kañcit) - a certain; प्रष्टुम् (praṣṭum) - to ask; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; व्यवसिष्ये (vyavasiṣye) - I shall resolve; परन्तप (parantapa) - O scorcher of enemies;]
(O king, thus here I am the doer, again I shall come under your control. But a certain question to ask you I shall resolve, O scorcher of enemies.)
O king, thus here I am the doer; I shall come again under your authority. But I have resolved to ask you a certain question, O subduer of foes. (14-57-9)

ब्रूहि विप्र यथाकामं प्रतिवक्तास्मि ते वचः। छेत्तास्मि संशयं तेऽद्य न मेऽत्रास्ति विचारणा ॥१४-५७-१०॥
brūhi vipra yathākāmaṃ prativaktāsmi te vacaḥ। chettāsmi saṃśayaṃ te'dya na me'trāsti vicāraṇā ॥14-57-10॥
[ब्रूहि (brūhi) - speak; (2nd person singular imperative of √brū, to say); विप्र (vipra) - brahmin; sage; यथाकामं (yathākāmaṃ) - as you wish; according to desire; प्रतिवक्ता (prativaktā) - responder; one who will reply; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; ते (te) - to you; your; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; words; छेत्ता (chettā) - remover; one who shall cut; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; संशयं (saṃśayam) - doubt; ते (te) - of you; your; अद्य (adya) - today; now; न (na) - not; मे (me) - for me; to me; अत्र (atra) - here; in this matter; अस्ति (asti) - is; exists; विचारणा (vicāraṇā) - deliberation; consideration;]
(Speak, O brahmin, as you wish; I am a responder to your words. I am the remover of your doubt today; there is no deliberation for me here.)
Speak as you wish, O brahmin; I shall answer your words. Today I will dispel your doubt—there is no deliberation for me in this matter. (14-57-10)

प्राहुर्वाक्सङ्गतं मित्रं धर्मनैपुण्यदर्शिनः। मित्रेषु यश्च विषमः स्तेन इत्येव तं विदुः ॥१४-५७-११॥
prāhur vāksaṅgataṃ mitraṃ dharmanaipuṇyadarśinaḥ। mitreṣu yaś ca viṣamaḥ stena ityeva taṃ viduḥ॥14-57-11॥
[प्राहुः (prāhuḥ) - they have said; वाक्-सङ्गतम् (vāk-saṅgatam) - united in speech; मित्रम् (mitram) - friend; धर्म-नैपुण्य-दर्शिनः (dharma-naipuṇya-darśinaḥ) - those who see (understand) skill in dharma; मित्रेषु (mitreṣu) - among friends; यः (yaḥ) - who; च (ca) - and; विषमः (viṣamaḥ) - unequal; स्तेनः (stenaḥ) - a thief; इति-एव (iti-eva) - thus indeed; तम् (tam) - him; विदुः (viduḥ) - they know;]
(They have said (that) friend united in speech (is a friend) by those who see skill in dharma. Among friends, he who is unequal, him they know as a thief, thus indeed.)
Those skilled in dharma say that a true friend is one united in speech. Among friends, whoever is unequal, they indeed consider him to be a thief. (14-57-11)
स भवान्मित्रतामद्य सम्प्राप्तो मम पार्थिव। स मे बुद्धिं प्रयच्छस्व समां बुद्धिमतां वर ॥१४-५७-१२॥
sa bhavān mitratām adya samprāpto mama pārthiva। sa me buddhiṁ prayacchasva samāṁ buddhimatāṁ vara ॥14-57-12॥
[स (sa) - he; भवान् (bhavān) - you (honorific); मित्रताम् (mitratām) - friendship; state of friend; अद्य (adya) - today; सम्प्राप्तः (samprāptaḥ) - attained; मम (mama) - my; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - king; स (sa) - he; मे (me) - to me; बुद्धिम् (buddhim) - intellect; प्रयच्छस्व (prayacchasva) - please bestow; समाम् (samām) - equal; बुद्धिमताम् (buddhimatām) - of the wise; वर (vara) - best;]
(He, you, (now) friendship today attained my O king. He, to me, intellect please bestow equal to the wise, best.)
O king, you have today attained my friendship. Best of the wise, please grant me an intellect equal to (that of) the wise. (14-57-12)
अवाप्तार्थोऽहमद्येह भवांश्च पुरुषादकः। भवत्सकाशमागन्तुं क्षमं मम न वेति वा ॥१४-५७-१३॥
avāptārtho'hamadyeha bhavāṁśca puruṣādakaḥ। bhavatsakāśamāgantuṁ kṣamaṁ mama na veti vā ॥14-57-13॥
[अवाप्तार्थः (avāptārthaḥ) - having attained the object; अहम् (aham) - I; अद्य (adya) - today; इह (iha) - here; भवान् (bhavān) - you (honorific); च (ca) - and; पुरुषादकः (puruṣādakaḥ) - devourer of men; भवत्सकाशम् (bhavatsakāśam) - to your presence; आगन्तुम् (āgantum) - to come; क्षमम् (kṣamam) - possible; मम (mama) - for me; न (na) - not; वेति (veti) - knows; वा (vā) - or;]
(Having attained the object I today here, you and (also) devourer of men, to your presence to come possible for me or not knows.)
Today, I have attained my aim here, and you, the devourer of men—whether I am able to come to your presence or not, I do not know. (14-57-13)

kṣamaṁ ced iha vaktavyaṁ mayā dvijavarottama। mat-samīpaṁ dvijaśreṣṭha nāgantavyaṁ kathaṁcana ॥14-57-14॥
[क्षमं (kṣamam) - proper; चेत् (cet) - if; इह (iha) - here; वक्तव्यम् (vaktavyam) - to be said; मया (mayā) - by me; द्विजवरोत्तम (dvijavarottama) - O best among excellent Brāhmaṇas; मत्समीपम् (mat-samīpam) - my proximity; द्विजश्रेष्ठ (dvijaśreṣṭha) - O eminent Brāhmaṇa; न (na) - not; आगन्तव्यम् (āgantavyam) - should be come; कथञ्चन (kathaṁcana) - in any way;]
(If here proper (thing) is to be said by me, O best among excellent Brāhmaṇas, to my proximity, O eminent Brāhmaṇa, not should be come in any way.)
If I am to say what is proper here, O best of Brāhmaṇas, you should not come near me in any way, O eminent Brāhmaṇa. (14-57-14)
एवं तव प्रपश्यामि श्रेयो भृगुकुलोद्वह। आगच्छतो हि ते विप्र भवेन्मृत्युरसंशयम् ॥१४-५७-१५॥
evaṁ tava prapaśyāmi śreyo bhṛgukulodvaha। āgacchato hi te vipra bhaven mṛtyur asaṁśayam॥14-57-15॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; तव (tava) - your; प्रपश्यामि (prapaśyāmi) - I foresee; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - good; welfare; भृगुकुलोद्वह (bhṛgukulodvaha) - O best of the Bhṛgu lineage; आगच्छतः (āgacchataḥ) - approaching; coming; हि (hi) - indeed; ते (te) - your; विप्र (vipra) - O brāhmaṇa; भवेत् (bhavet) - there may be; मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - death; असंशयम् (asaṁśayam) - without doubt;]
(Thus, your good I foresee, O best of the Bhṛgu lineage; indeed, for you, O brāhmaṇa, death without doubt may occur upon approaching.)
Thus, O best of the Bhṛgu lineage, I foresee your welfare; but truly, O brāhmaṇa, if you go there, without doubt death will result for you. (14-57-15)

ityuktaḥ sa tadā rājñā kṣamaṃ buddhimatā hitam। samanujñāpya rājānamahlyāṃ prati jagmivān॥14-57-16॥
[इत्युक्तः (ityuktaḥ) - thus addressed; स (sa) - he; तदा (tadā) - then; राज्ञा (rājñā) - by the king; क्षमं (kṣamam) - appropriate; बुद्धिमता (buddhimatā) - by the wise; हितम् (hitam) - beneficial; समनुज्ञाप्य (samanujñāpya) - having obtained permission; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; अहल्यां (ahalyām) - Ahalya; प्रति (prati) - towards; जग्मिवान् (jagmivān) - he went;]
(Thus addressed, he then by the king, what was appropriate, by the wise, beneficial, having obtained permission, the king, towards Ahalya, went.)
Thus addressed by the wise king with appropriate and beneficial words, having obtained the king's permission, he then went towards Ahalya. (14-57-16)
गृहीत्वा कुण्डले दिव्ये गुरुपत्न्याः प्रियङ्करः। जवेन महता प्रायाद्गौतमस्याश्रमं प्रति ॥१४-५७-१७॥
gṛhītvā kuṇḍale divye gurupatnyāḥ priyaṅkaraḥ। javena mahatā prāyād gautamasya āśramam prati ॥14-57-17॥
[गृहीत्वा (gṛhītvā) - having taken; कुण्डले (kuṇḍale) - earrings; दिव्ये (divye) - divine; गुरुपत्न्याः (gurupatnyāḥ) - of the guru's wife; प्रियङ्करः (priyaṅkaraḥ) - the bringer of joy; जवेन (javena) - with speed; महता (mahatā) - great; प्रायात् (prāyāt) - he went; गौतमस्य (gautamasya) - of Gautama; आश्रमं (āśramam) - hermitage; प्रति (prati) - towards;]
(Having taken the divine earrings of the guru's wife, the bringer of joy went with great speed towards the hermitage of Gautama.)
Having taken the guru's wife's divine earrings, the bringer of joy went swiftly towards Gautama's hermitage. (14-57-17)
यथा तयो रक्षणं च मदयन्त्याभिभाषितम्। तथा ते कुण्डले बद्ध्वा तथा कृष्णाजिनेऽनयत् ॥१४-५७-१८॥
yathā tayo rakṣaṇaṃ ca madayantyābhibhāṣitam. tathā te kuṇḍale baddhvā tathā kṛṣṇājine'nayat ॥14-57-18॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; तयो (tayo) - of those two; रक्षणं (rakṣaṇam) - protection; च (ca) - and; मदयन्त्या (madayantyā) - by Madayantī; अभिभाषितम् (abhibhāṣitam) - spoken; तथा (tathā) - in the same way; ते (te) - those; कुण्डले (kuṇḍale) - earrings; बद्ध्वा (baddhvā) - having tied; तथा (tathā) - so; कृष्णाजिने (kṛṣṇājine) - in a black antelope hide; अनयत् (anayat) - he took (them);]
(Just as by Madayantī the protection of those two was spoken, so having tied those earrings in a black antelope hide, he took (them).)
Just as Madayantī spoke about protecting the two, so he tied those earrings in a black antelope hide and took them. (14-57-18)
स कस्मिंश्चित्क्षुधाविष्टः फलभारसमन्वितम्। बिल्वं ददर्श कस्मिंश्चिदारुरोह क्षुधान्वितः ॥१४-५७-१९॥
sa kasmiṁścit kṣudhāviṣṭaḥ phalabhārasamanvitam। bilvaṁ dadarśa kasmiṁścid āruroha kṣudhānvitaḥ॥14-57-19॥

(He, in some place, overcome by hunger, laden with the weight of fruit, bilva tree, he saw; in some place, he climbed, afflicted by hunger.)
He, being afflicted by hunger, saw a bilva tree laden with the weight of fruit in a certain place; and in that place, hungry, he climbed it. (14-57-19)
शाखास्वासज्य तस्यैव कृष्णाजिनमरिंदम। यस्मिंस्ते कुण्डले बद्धे तदा द्विजवरेण वै ॥१४-५७-२०॥
śākhāsv āsajya tasyai va kṛṣṇājinam ariṃdama। yasmin te kuṇḍale baddhe tadā dvijavareṇa vai ॥14-57-20॥

(Having placed the black antelope skin of him indeed upon the branches, O subduer of enemies, in which your earrings were fastened, then by the excellent Brahmin indeed.)
O subduer of enemies, the excellent Brahmin then placed his black antelope skin—on the branches where your earrings were tied. (14-57-20)
विशीर्णबन्धने तस्मिन्गते कृष्णाजिने महीम्। अपश्यद्भुजगः कश्चित्ते तत्र मणिकुण्डले ॥१४-५७-२१॥
viśīrṇabandhane tasmin gate kṛṣṇājine mahīm। apaśyad bhujagaḥ kaścit te tatra maṇikuṇḍale ॥14-57-21॥
[विशीर्णबन्धने (viśīrṇabandhane) - with the fastening loosened; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; गते (gate) - gone; कृष्णाजिने (kṛṣṇājine) - on the black antelope skin; महीम् (mahīm) - the earth; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - saw; भुजगः (bhujagaḥ) - the serpent; कश्चित् (kaścit) - some; ते (te) - your; तत्र (tatra) - there; मणिकुण्डले (maṇikuṇḍale) - bejeweled earrings;]
(With the fastening loosened, when that black antelope skin had gone upon the earth, some serpent saw there your bejeweled earrings.)
As the fastening loosened and the black antelope skin fell to the earth, a certain serpent saw your bejeweled earrings there. (14-57-21)
ऐरावतकुलोत्पन्नः शीघ्रो भूत्वा तदा स वै। विदश्यास्येन वल्मीकं विवेशाथ स कुण्डले ॥१४-५७-२२॥
airāvatakulotpannaḥ śīghro bhūtvā tadā sa vai। vidaśyāsyena valmīkaṃ viveśātha sa kuṇḍale ॥14-57-22॥
[ऐरावतकुलोत्पन्नः (airāvatakulotpannaḥ) - born from the lineage of Airāvata; शीघ्रः (śīghraḥ) - swift; swift one; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; तदा (tadā) - then; स (sa) - he; वै (vai) - indeed; विदश्य (vidaśya) - tearing (by biting); आस्येन (āsyena) - with the mouth; वल्मीकम् (valmīkam) - ant-hill; विवेश (viveśa) - entered; अथ (atha) - then; स (sa) - he; कुण्डले (kuṇḍale) - into the cavity;]
(Born from the lineage of Airāvata, swift becoming then he indeed. Tearing with (his) mouth the ant-hill, he entered then he into the cavity.)
He, born from the lineage of Airāvata, having become swift at that time, indeed, tore with his mouth the ant-hill, and then he entered into the cavity. (14-57-22)
ह्रियमाणे तु दृष्ट्वा स कुण्डले भुजगेन ह। पपात वृक्षात्सोद्वेगो दुःखात्परमकोपनः ॥१४-५७-२३॥
hriyamāṇe tu dṛṣṭvā sa kuṇḍale bhujagena ha। papāta vṛkṣātsodvego duḥkhātparamakopanaḥ ॥14-57-23॥
[ह्रियमाणे (hriyamāṇe) - being taken away; तु (tu) - but; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; स (sa) - he; कुण्डले (kuṇḍale) - the (pair of) earrings; भुजगेन (bhujagena) - by the serpent; ह (ha) - indeed; पपात (papāta) - fell; वृक्षात् (vṛkṣāt) - from the tree; स-उद्वेगो (sa-udvegaḥ) - with anxiety; दुःखात् (duḥkhāt) - from sorrow; परम-कोपनः (parama-kopanaḥ) - utterly enraged;]
(But having seen, as the earrings were being taken away indeed by the serpent, he, with anxiety, from sorrow, utterly enraged, fell from the tree.)
But when he saw the earrings being carried off by the serpent, he, overcome with anxiety and extreme anger from grief, fell from the tree. (14-57-23)
स दण्डकाष्ठमादाय वल्मीकमखनत्तदा। क्रोधामर्षाभितप्ताङ्गस्ततो वै द्विजपुङ्गवः ॥१४-५७-२४॥
sa daṇḍakāṣṭham ādāya valmīkam akhanat tadā. krodhāmarṣābhitaptāṅgas tato vai dvijapuṅgavaḥ ॥14-57-24॥

(He, having taken a stick of wood, dug the anthill then. Body afflicted by anger and indignation, thereupon indeed the foremost of the twice-born.)
Then, the foremost of the twice-born, his body burning with anger and indignation, took a stick of wood and dug into the anthill. (14-57-24)
तस्य वेगमसह्यं तमसहन्ती वसुन्धरा। दण्डकाष्ठाभिनुन्नाङ्गी चचाल भृशमातुरा ॥१४-५७-२५॥
tasya vegam asahyaṃ tam asahantī vasundharā। daṇḍakāṣṭhābhinunnāṅgī cacāla bhṛśam āturā ॥14-57-25॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; वेगम् (vegam) - the force; असह्यम् (asahyam) - unbearable; तम् (tam) - that; असहन्ती (asahantī) - not enduring; वसुन्धरा (vasundharā) - the earth; दण्डकाष्ठाभिनुन्नाङ्गी (daṇḍakāṣṭhābhinunnāṅgī) - her body (aṅgī) struck (abhinunna) by cudgel and wood (daṇḍa-kāṣṭha); चचाल (cacāla) - trembled; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - excessively; आतुरा (āturā) - afflicted;]
(Of him the force unbearable, that not enduring, the earth, her body struck by cudgel and wood, trembled excessively afflicted.)
The earth, unable to endure his unbearable force, her body struck by cudgel and wood, trembled greatly, being afflicted. (14-57-25)
ततः खनत एवाथ विप्रर्षेर्धरणीतलम्। नागलोकस्य पन्थानं कर्तुकामस्य निश्चयात् ॥१४-५७-२६॥
tataḥ khanata eva atha viprarṣer dharaṇī-talam। nāga-lokasya panthānaṃ kartu-kāmasya niścayāt॥14-57-26॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; खनत (khanata) - digging; excavating; एव (eva) - indeed; only; अथ (atha) - then; next; विप्रर्षेः (viprarṣeḥ) - of the Brāhmaṇa sage; धरणीतलम् (dharaṇī-talam) - surface of the earth; नागलोकस्य (nāga-lokasya) - of Nāga-loka; of the realm of the serpents; पन्थानम् (panthānam) - path; way; कर्तुकामस्य (kartu-kāmasya) - desiring to make; wishing to create; निश्चयात् (niścayāt) - by determination; by resolve;]
(Then, indeed, the Brāhmaṇa sage, while digging the surface of the earth, by the resolve of wishing to create a path to the Nāga-loka.)
Then, while digging the surface of the earth, the Brāhmaṇa sage, determined to create a path to the realm of the Nāgas, proceeded thus. (14-57-26)
रथेन हरियुक्तेन तं देशमुपजग्मिवान्। वज्रपाणिर्महातेजा ददर्श च द्विजोत्तमम् ॥१४-५७-२७॥
rathena hariyuktena taṃ deśam upajagmivān। vajrapāṇir mahātejā dadarśa ca dvijottamam ॥14-57-27॥
[रथेन (rathena) - by the chariot; हरियुक्तेन (hariyuktena) - yoked with horses; तं (taṃ) - that; देशम् (deśam) - place; उपजग्मिवान् (upajagmivān) - approached; वज्रपाणिः (vajrapāṇiḥ) - Vajra-handed (one who has vajra in hand); महातेजा (mahātejā) - greatly effulgent; ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; च (ca) - and; द्विजोत्तमम् (dvijottamam) - the best among brahmins;]
(By the chariot yoked with horses, that place he approached; Vajra-handed (Indra), greatly effulgent, saw and the best among brahmins.)
Vajrapāṇi (Indra), possessed of great brilliance, approached that place in a chariot drawn by horses and saw the best among the brahmins. (14-57-27)
स तु तं ब्राह्मणो भूत्वा तस्य दुःखेन दुःखितः। उत्तङ्कमब्रवीत्तात नैतच्छक्यं त्वयेति वै ॥१४-५७-२८॥
sa tu taṃ brāhmaṇo bhūtvā tasya duḥkhena duḥkhitaḥ। uttaṅkam abravīt tāta na etat śakyaṃ tvayā iti vai ॥14-57-28॥
[स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; तं (taṃ) - him; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - brāhmaṇa (Brahmin); भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; तस्य (tasya) - his; दुःखेन (duḥkhena) - by sorrow; दुःखितः (duḥkhitaḥ) - distressed; उत्तङ्कम् (uttaṅkam) - Uttaṅka; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - he said; तात (tāta) - dear (addressing, O child/father); न (na) - not; एतत् (etat) - this; शक्यम् (śakyaṃ) - possible; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; इति (iti) - thus; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(He, but, having become a brāhmaṇa, distressed by his sorrow, said to Uttaṅka: "Dear, this is not possible by you, indeed." (14-57-28))
But he, having assumed the form of a brāhmaṇa and being distressed by his sorrow, said to Uttaṅka: "Dear, this is not possible for you." (14-57-28)
इतो हि नागलोको वै योजनानि सहस्रशः। न दण्डकाष्ठसाध्यं च मन्ये कार्यमिदं तव ॥१४-५७-२९॥
ito hi nāgaloko vai yojanāni sahasraśaḥ। na daṇḍakāṣṭhasādhyaṁ ca manye kāryam idaṁ tava॥14-57-29॥
[इतः (itaḥ) - from here; हि (hi) - indeed; नागलोकः (nāgalokaḥ) - Nāga world; वै (vai) - truly; योजनानि (yojanāni) - leagues; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by the thousands; न (na) - not; दण्डकाष्ठसाध्यम् (daṇḍakāṣṭhasādhyam) - to be accomplished with a stick of wood; च (ca) - and; मnyeे (manye) - I think; कार्यम् (kāryam) - work; इदं (idaṁ) - this; तव (tava) - your;]
(From here indeed, the world of the Nāgas, truly, (is) leagues by the thousands. Not by a stick of wood is (it) to be accomplished, and I think this work of yours.)
Indeed, from here the world of the Nāgas is truly many thousands of leagues away. I think this task of yours cannot be accomplished with a wooden staff. (14-57-29)

nāgaloke yadi brahman na śakye kuṇḍale mayā। prāptuṃ prāṇān vimokṣyāmi paśyataḥ te dvijottama ॥14-57-30॥
[नागलोके (nāgaloke) - in the world of nāgas; यदि (yadi) - if; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahmin; न (na) - not; शक्ये (śakye) - possible; कुण्डले (kuṇḍale) - the ear-rings; मया (mayā) - by me; प्राप्तुं (prāptuṃ) - to obtain; प्राणान् (prāṇān) - life-breaths; विमोक्ष्यामि (vimokṣyāmi) - I shall abandon; पश्यतः (paśyataḥ) - as you watch; ते (te) - your; द्विजोत्तम (dvijottama) - O best of twice-born;]
(In the world of nāgas, if, O Brahmin, not possible the ear-rings by me to obtain, my life-breaths I shall abandon as you watch, O best of twice-born.)
O Brahmin, if it is not possible for me to obtain the ear-rings in the world of the nāgas, I shall give up my life right before your eyes, O best of the twice-born. (14-57-30)
यदा स नाशकत्तस्य निश्चयं कर्तुमन्यथा। वज्रपाणिस्तदा दण्डं वज्रास्त्रेण युयोज ह ॥१४-५७-३१॥
yadā sa nāśakat tasya niścayaṃ kartum anyathā। vajrapāṇis tadā daṇḍaṃ vajrāstreṇa yuyoja ha ॥14-57-31॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; स (sa) - he; नाशकत्तस्य (nāśaka-t tasya) - of destroyer that (of destroying that); निश्चयम् (niścayam) - decision; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise; वज्रपाणिः (vajrapāṇiḥ) - Indra (the one with the vajra in his hand); तदा (tadā) - then; दण्डम् (daṇḍam) - staff; वज्रास्त्रेण (vajrāstreṇa) - with the vajra-weapon; युयोज (yuyoja) - applied; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(When he was not able of destroying that, decision to do otherwise, Indra (the one with the vajra in his hand) then the staff with the vajra-weapon applied indeed.)
When he could not decide to destroy it otherwise, Indra (the vajra-handed) then applied the staff with the vajra-weapon. (14-57-31)
ततो वज्रप्रहारैस्तैर्दार्यमाणा वसुन्धरा। नागलोकस्य पन्थानमकरोज्जनमेजय ॥१४-५७-३२॥
tato vajraprahāraistair dāryamāṇā vasundharā। nāgalokasya panthānam akarot janamejaya ॥14-57-32॥

(Then, by those thunderbolt-strikings, being split, the earth made a path of the realm of nāgas, O Janamejaya.)
Then, O Janamejaya, the earth, being split by those thunderbolt attacks, made a path to the realm of the nāgas. (14-57-32)
स तेन मार्गेण तदा नागलोकं विवेश ह। ददर्श नागलोकं च योजनानि सहस्रशः ॥१४-५७-३३॥
sa tena mārgeṇa tadā nāgalokaṃ viveśa ha। dadarśa nāgalokaṃ ca yojanāni sahasraśaḥ॥14-57-33॥

(He by that path then Nāga-world entered indeed. He saw Nāga-world and leagues by thousands.)
He then entered the Nāga-world by that path, and saw the Nāga-world extending for thousands of leagues. (14-57-33)
प्राकारनिचयैर्दिव्यैर्मणिमुक्ताभ्यलङ्कृतैः। उपपन्नं महाभाग शातकुम्भमयैस्तथा ॥१४-५७-३४॥
prākāranicayairdivyairmaṇimuktābhyalaṅkṛtaiḥ। upapannaṃ mahābhāga śātakumbhamayaistathā ॥14-57-34॥
[प्राकारनिचयैः (prākāranicayaiḥ) - by heaps (layers) of ramparts; दिव्यैः (divyaiḥ) - divine; मणिमुक्ता (maṇimuktā) - jewels and pearls; अभ्यलङ्कृतैः (abhyalaṅkṛtaiḥ) - adorned with; उपपन्नं (upapannaṃ) - provided; महाभाग (mahābhāga) - O highly fortunate one; शातकुम्भमयैः (śātakumbhamayaiḥ) - made of gold; तथा (tathā) - likewise;]
(O highly fortunate one, (it is) provided with divine heaps of ramparts adorned with jewels and pearls, likewise made of gold.)

वापीः स्फटिकसोपाना नदीश्च विमलोदकाः। ददर्श वृक्षांश्च बहून्नानाद्विजगणायुतान् ॥१४-५७-३५॥
vāpīḥ sphāṭikasopānā nadīś ca vimalodakāḥ। dadarśa vṛkṣāṁś ca bahūn nānā-dvija-gaṇa-āyutān ॥14-57-35॥
[वापीः (vāpīḥ) - ponds; स्फटिकसोपाना (sphaṭikasopānā) - having crystal stairs; नदीः (nadīḥ) - rivers; च (ca) - and; विमलोदकाः (vimalodakāḥ) - having pure water; ददर्श (dadarśa) - he saw; वृक्षान् (vṛkṣān) - trees; च (ca) - and; बहून् (bahūn) - many; नानाद्विजगणायुतान् (nānā-dvija-gaṇa-āyutān) - thronged with various groups of birds;]

tasya lokasya ca dvāraṃ dadarśa sa bhṛgūdvahaḥ। pañcayojanavistāram āyataṃ śatayojanam ॥14-57-36॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of that; लोकस्य (lokasya) - of the world; च (ca) - and; द्वारं (dvāram) - door; ददर्श (dadarśa) - he saw; स (sa) - he; भृगूद्वहः (bhṛgūdvahaḥ) - the best of the Bhṛgus; पञ्चयोजनविस्तारम् (pañcayojanavistāram) - five-yojana breadth; आयतं (āyatam) - lengthened; शतयोजनम् (śatayojanam) - one hundred yojanas (in length);]
(Of that world and door he saw, he, the best of the Bhṛgus; five-yojana breadth, lengthened, one hundred yojanas.)
He, the best of the Bhṛgus, saw the doorway of that world; its breadth was five yojanas and its length one hundred yojanas. (14-57-36)
नागलोकमुत्तङ्कस्तु प्रेक्ष्य दीनोऽभवत्तदा। निराशश्चाभवत्तात कुण्डलाहरणे पुनः ॥१४-५७-३७॥
nāgalokam-uttaṅkas tu prekṣya dīno'bhavat tadā। nirāśaś cābhavat tāta kuṇḍala-haraṇe punaḥ॥14-57-37॥
[नागलोकम् (nāgalokam) - Nāga world; उत्तङ्कः (uttaṅkaḥ) - Uttaṅka (proper noun); तु (tu) - but; प्रेक्ष्य (prekṣya) - having seen; दीनः (dīnaḥ) - distressed; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; तदा (tadā) - then; निराशः (nirāśaḥ) - despairing; च (ca) - and; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; तात (tāta) - O dear (address); कुण्डलाहरणे (kuṇḍala-haraṇe) - in the taking of the earrings; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(But Uttaṅka, having seen the Nāga world, then became distressed; and, O dear, in the taking of the earrings, again became despairing.)
But Uttaṅka, having beheld the Nāga world, became distressed then; and, O dear, he again became hopeless about the taking of the earrings. (14-57-37)
तत्र प्रोवाच तुरगस्तं कृष्णश्वेतवालधिः। ताम्रास्यनेत्रः कौरव्य प्रज्वलन्निव तेजसा ॥१४-५७-३८॥
tatra provāca turagas taṃ kṛṣṇaśvetavāladhiḥ। tāmrāsya-netraḥ kauravya prajvalann iva tejasā॥14-57-38॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; प्रोवाच (provāca) - said; तुरगः (turagaḥ) - the steed; तम् (tam) - to him; कृष्णश्वेतवालधिः (kṛṣṇaśvetavāladhiḥ) - having black-and-white tail; ताम्रास्यनेत्रः (tāmrāsya-netraḥ) - having coppery mouth and eyes; कौरव्य (kauravya) - O Kauravya; प्रज्वलन्निव (prajvalann iva) - as if blazing; तेजसा (tejasā) - with brilliance;]
(There said the steed to him, having black-and-white tail, having coppery mouth and eyes, O Kauravya, as if blazing with brilliance.)
There the horse, his tail black and white, his mouth and eyes coppery, O Kauravya, as if blazing with splendor, said to him. (14-57-38)
धमस्वापानमेतन्मे ततस्त्वं विप्र लल्प्स्यसे। ऐरावतसुतेनेह तवानीते हि कुण्डले ॥१४-५७-३९॥
dhamasvāpānam etan me tatas tvaṃ vipra lalpsyase। airāvatasutena iha tavānīte hi kuṇḍale॥14-57-39॥
[धमस्वापानम् (dhamasvāpānam) - the drinking of (the water of) Dhama, the celestial (river); एतत् (etat) - this; मे (me) - for me; ततः (tataḥ) - then; त्वम् (tvam) - you; विप्र (vipra) - O Brāhmaṇa; लल्प्स्यसे (lalpsyase) - you will obtain; ऐरावतसुतेन (airāvatasutena) - by Airāvata's son (i.e., by the elephant's son); इह (iha) - here; तव (tava) - your; आनीते (ānīte) - brought; हि (hi) - indeed; कुण्डले (kuṇḍale) - earrings;]
(This drinking of Dhama (celestial river), for me, then you, O Brāhmaṇa, will obtain. By Airāvata's son here, your earrings indeed (have been) brought.)
This drinking of the celestial Dhama is for me; then, O Brāhmaṇa, you will obtain (them). Here, your earrings have indeed been brought by Airāvata's son. (14-57-39)
मा जुगुप्सां कृथाः पुत्र त्वमत्रार्थे कथञ्चन। त्वयैतद्धि समाचीर्णं गौतमस्याश्रमे तदा ॥१४-५७-४०॥
mā jugupsāṃ kṛthāḥ putra tvam atrārthe kathañcana। tvayaitad dhi samācīrṇaṃ gautamasyāśrame tadā ॥14-57-40॥
[मा (mā) (mā) - do not; जुगुप्सां (jugupsām) (jugupsām) - disgust; कृथाः (kṛthāḥ) (kṛthāḥ) - make; पुत्र (putra) (putra) - O son; त्वम् (tvam) (tvam) - you; अत्रार्थे (atrārthe) (atrārthe) - in this matter; कथञ्चन (kathañcana) (kathañcana) - in any way; त्वया (tvayā) (tvayā) - by you; एतत् (etat) (etat) - this; हि (hi) (hi) - indeed; समाचीर्णं (samācīrṇam) (samācīrṇam) - has been performed; गौतमस्य (gautamasya) (gautamasya) - of Gautama; आश्रमे (āśrame) (āśrame) - in the hermitage; तदा (tadā) (tadā) - then;]
(Do not make disgust, O son, you in this matter in any way; by you this indeed has been performed in Gautama's hermitage then.)
O son, do not feel any disgust in this matter; indeed, this was done by you in Gautama's hermitage at that time. (14-57-40)
उत्तङ्क उवाच॥

(Uttanka spoke;)
Uttanka said;
कथं भवन्तं जानीयामुपाध्यायाश्रमं प्रति। यन्मया चीर्णपूर्वं च श्रोतुमिच्छामि तद्ध्यहम् ॥१४-५७-४१॥
kathaṁ bhavantaṁ jānīyām upādhyāyāśramaṁ prati। yan mayā cīrṇapūrvaṁ ca śrotum icchāmi tad dhy aham ॥14-57-41॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; भवन्तं (bhavantaṁ) - you (respected one); जानीयाम् (jānīyām) - might I know; उपाध्यायाश्रमं (upādhyāyāśramam) - preceptor's hermitage; प्रति (prati) - towards; यत् (yat) - which; मया (mayā) - by me; चीर्णपूर्वं (cīrṇapūrvaṁ) - formerly undergone; च (ca) - and; श्रोतुम् (śrotum) - to hear; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; तत् (tat) - that; हि (hi) - indeed; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(How you might I know, towards the preceptor's hermitage. Which by me formerly undergone and to hear I wish, that indeed I.)
How might I know you regarding the preceptor's hermitage? That which I have formerly experienced, I indeed wish to hear.
अश्व उवाच॥

[अश्व (aśva) - horse; (as a proper noun, the Horse); उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; said;]

The Horse said.
गुरोर्गुरुं मां जानीहि ज्वलितं जातवेदसम्। त्वया ह्यहं सदा वत्स गुरोरर्थेऽभिपूजितः ॥१४-५७-४२॥
gurorguruṃ māṃ jānīhi jvalitaṃ jātavedasam। tvayā hyahaṃ sadā vatsa gurorarthe'bhipūjitaḥ॥14-57-42॥
[गुरोः (guroḥ) - of the guru; of the teacher; गुरुं (guruṃ) - the guru; teacher; माम् (mām) - me; जानीहि (jānīhi) - know; understand; ज्वलितं (jvalitaṃ) - blazing; shining; जातवेदसम् (jātavedasam) - Agni; fire; (one who knows all births); त्वया (tvayā) - by you; हि (hi) - indeed; certainly; अहम् (aham) - I; सदा (sadā) - always; वत्स (vatsa) - O child; गुरोः (guroḥ) - of the guru; of the teacher; अर्थे (arthe) - for the sake; for the purpose; अभिपूजितः (abhipūjitaḥ) - revered; especially worshipped;]
(Know me, the blazing Agni (Jātavedas), as the teacher of the guru. By you indeed, O child, I am always especially worshipped for the sake of the guru.)
Know me, the blazing Jātavedas, as the guru's own guru. By you, O child, I am always especially revered for the sake of the teacher. (14-57-42)
सततं पूजितो विप्र शुचिना भृगुनन्दन। तस्माच्छ्रेयो विधास्यामि तवैवं कुरु मा चिरम् ॥१४-५७-४३॥
satataṃ pūjito vipra śucinā bhṛgunandana। tasmācchreyo vidhāsyāmi tavaivaṃ kuru mā ciram ॥14-57-43॥
[सततं (satataṃ) - constantly; पूजितो (pūjitaḥ) - honored; विप्र (vipra) - Brāhmaṇa; शुचिना (śucinā) - by the pure one; भृगुनन्दन (bhṛgunandana) - O descendant of Bhṛgu; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; श्रेयो (śreyaḥ) - the better; विधास्यामि (vidhāsyāmi) - I shall perform; तव (tava) - for you; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; कुरु (kuru) - do; मा (mā) - not; चिरम् (ciram) - delay;]
(Constantly honored, Brāhmaṇa, by the pure one, O descendant of Bhṛgu; therefore, the better I shall perform for you; thus do, do not delay.)
O Brāhmaṇa, descendant of Bhṛgu, you have been constantly honored by the pure one; therefore, I will accomplish what is best for you. So, do this—do not delay. (14-57-43)
इत्युक्तः स तथाकार्षीदुत्तङ्कश्चित्रभानुना। घृतार्चिः प्रीतिमांश्चापि प्रजज्वाल दिधक्षया ॥१४-५७-४४॥
ityuktaḥ sa tathākārṣīd uttankaś citrabhānunā। ghṛtārciḥ prītimāṁś cāpi prajajvāla didhakṣayā ॥14-57-44॥
[इति-उक्तः (iti-uktaḥ) - thus-spoken; सः (saḥ) - he; तथा-अकार्षीत् (tathā-akārṣīt) - so did; उत्तङ्कः (uttankaḥ) - Uttanka; चित्रभानुना (citrabhānunā) - by Citrabhānu; घृत-अर्चिः (ghṛt-arciḥ) - Ghṛtārciḥ; प्रीतिमान्-च (prītimān-ca) - full of pleasure-and; अपि (api) - also; प्रजज्वाल (prajajvāla) - blazed forth; दिधक्षया (didhakṣayā) - with the intention to burn;]
(Thus spoken to, he so did; Uttanka by Citrabhānu. Ghṛtārciḥ, full of pleasure also, blazed forth with the intention to burn.)
Thus addressed, Uttanka did accordingly by Citrabhānu. Ghṛtārciḥ, feeling joy, also blazed forth with a desire to burn. (14-57-44)
ततोऽस्य रोमकूपेभ्यो ध्मायमानस्य भारत। घनः प्रादुरभूद्धूमो नागलोकभयावहः ॥१४-५७-४५॥
tato'sya romakūpebhyo dhmāyamānasya bhārata। ghanaḥ prādurabhūddhūmo nāgalokabhayāvahaḥ ॥14-57-45॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अस्य (asya) - his; रोमकूपेभ्यः (romakūpebhyaḥ) - from the pores of the hair; ध्मायमानस्य (dhmāyamānasya) - of (him) being blown upon; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; घनः (ghanaḥ) - a thick (cloud); प्रादुरभूत् (prādurabhūt) - appeared; धूमः (dhūmaḥ) - smoke; नागलोकभयावहः (nāgalokabhayāvahaḥ) - causing fear to the world of serpents;]
(Then from his hair-pores, as he was being blown upon, O Bhārata, a thick smoke appeared, causing fear to the world of serpents.)
Then, O Bhārata, as he was being blown upon, a thick smoke appeared from his hair-pores, striking fear into the world of serpents. (14-57-45)
तेन धूमेन सहसा वर्धमानेन भारत। नागलोके महाराज न प्रज्ञायत किञ्चन ॥१४-५७-४६॥
tena dhūmena sahasā vardhamānena bhārata। nāgaloke mahārāja na prajñāyata kiñcana ॥14-57-46॥
[तेन (tena) - by that; धूमेन (dhūmena) - by the smoke; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; वर्धमानेन (vardhamānena) - increasing; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; नागलोके (nāgaloke) - in the world of the nāgas; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; न (na) - not; प्रज्ञायत (prajñāyata) - became visible; किञ्चन (kiñcana) - anything;]
(By that smoke, suddenly increasing, O Bhārata, in the world of the nāgas, O great king, not became visible anything.)
O Bhārata, O great king, because of that suddenly increasing smoke, nothing whatsoever became visible in the world of the nāgas. (14-57-46)
हाहाकृतमभूत्सर्वमैरावतनिवेशनम्। वासुकिप्रमुखानां च नागानां जनमेजय ॥१४-५७-४७॥
hāhākṛtam abhūt sarvam airāvata-niveśanam। vāsuki-pramukhānāṃ ca nāgānāṃ janamejaya॥14-57-47॥
[हाहाकृतम् (hāhākṛtam) - filled with cries of terror; अभूत् (abhūt) - became; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; ऐरावत-निवेशनम् (airāvata-niveśanam) - the dwelling of Airāvata; वासुकि-प्रमुखानाम् (vāsuki-pramukhānām) - of Vasuki and the foremost (leaders); च (ca) - and; नागानाम् (nāgānām) - of the nāgas (serpents); जनमेजय (janamejaya) - O Janamejaya;]
(The dwelling of Airāvata, all, became filled with cries of terror; and of Vasuki and the foremost nāgas (serpents), O Janamejaya.)
O Janamejaya, the entire dwelling of Airāvata, and that of Vasuki and the foremost of the nāgas, became filled with cries of terror. (14-57-47)
न प्रकाशन्त वेश्मानि धूमरुद्धानि भारत। नीहारसंवृतानीव वनानि गिरयस्तथा ॥१४-५७-४८॥
na prakāśanta veśmāni dhūmaruddhāni bhārata। nīhārasaṁvṛtānīva vanāni girayastathā ॥14-57-48॥
[न (na) - not; प्रकाशन्त (prakāśanta) - shine; appear; वेश्मानि (veśmāni) - houses; धूमरुद्धानि (dhūmaruddhāni) - obstructed by smoke; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; नीहारसंवृतानि (nīhārasaṁvṛtāni) - covered by mist; इव (iva) - like; वनानि (vanāni) - forests; गिरयस्तथा (girayastathā) - mountains likewise;]
(Not shine houses obstructed by smoke, O Bhārata; like forests covered by mist, mountains likewise.)
O Bhārata, the houses obstructed by smoke did not shine; just as forests and mountains do not appear when covered by mist. (14-57-48)
ते धूमरक्तनयना वह्नितेजोभितापिताः। आजग्मुर्निश्चयं ज्ञातुं भार्गवस्यातितेजसः ॥१४-५७-४९॥
te dhūma-rakta-nayanā vahni-tejobhitāpitāḥ। ājagmur niścayaṃ jñātuṃ bhārgavasya ati-tejasaḥ॥14-57-49॥
[ते (te) - they; धूमरक्तनयना (dhūma-rakta-nayanā) - smoke-red-eyed; वह्नितेजोभितापिताः (vahni-tejaḥ-abhi-tāpitāḥ) - scorched by the power of fire; आजग्मुः (ājagmuḥ) - came; निश्चयं (niścayam) - certainty; ज्ञातुम् (jñātum) - to know; भार्गवस्य (bhārgavasya) - of Bhārgava (Paraśurāma); अतितेजसः (ati-tejasaḥ) - of very great brilliance;]
(They, smoke-red-eyed, scorched by the power of fire, came to know the certainty of Bhārgava of very great brilliance.)
They, whose eyes were reddened like smoke and scorched by the power of fire, came to ascertain the true nature of Bhārgava of overwhelming brilliance. (14-57-49)
श्रुत्वा च निश्चयं तस्य महर्षेस्तिग्मतेजसः। सम्भ्रान्तमनसः सर्वे पूजां चक्रुर्यथाविधि ॥१४-५७-५०॥
śrutvā ca niścayaṃ tasya maharṣeḥ tigmatejasaḥ। sambhrāntamanasaḥ sarve pūjāṃ cakruḥ yathāvidhi ॥14-57-50॥
[श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; च (ca) - and; निश्चयं (niścayam) - decision; तस्य (tasya) - of him; महर्षेः (maharṣeḥ) - of the great sage; तिग्मतेजसः (tigmatejasaḥ) - of sharp radiance; सम्भ्रान्तमनसः (sambhrāntamanasaḥ) - with disturbed minds; सर्वे (sarve) - all; पूजां (pūjām) - worship; चक्रुः (cakruḥ) - they performed; यथाविधि (yathāvidhi) - according to rule;]
(Having heard and the decision of him, of the great sage of sharp radiance, with disturbed minds all worship they performed according to rule.)
All, with disturbed minds, having heard the decision of the sharp-radiant great sage, performed the worship according to the prescribed rule. (14-57-50)
सर्वे प्राञ्जलयो नागा वृद्धबालपुरोगमाः। शिरोभिः प्रणिपत्योचुः प्रसीद भगवन्निति ॥१४-५७-५१॥
sarve prāñjalayo nāgā vṛddhabālapurogamāḥ। śirobhiḥ praṇipatyocuḥ prasīda bhagavanniti ॥14-57-51॥
[सर्वे (sarve) - all; everyone; प्राञ्जलयः (prāñjalayaḥ) - with joined palms; नागाः (någāḥ) - Nāgas; serpents; वृद्धबालपुरोगमाः (vṛddhabālapurogamāḥ) - headed by elders and children; शिरोभिः (śirobhiḥ) - with (their) heads; प्रणिपत्य (praṇipatya) - having prostrated; bowing down; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - they said; प्रसीद (prasīda) - be gracious; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O Lord; इति (iti) - thus;]
(All Nāgas with joined palms, headed by elders and children, with (their) heads having prostrated, said: "Be gracious, O Lord," thus.)
All the Nāgas, with joined palms and led by elders and children, bowed their heads in prostration and said: "Be gracious, O Lord." (14-57-51)
प्रसाद्य ब्राह्मणं ते तु पाद्यमर्घ्यं निवेद्य च। प्रायच्छन्कुण्डले दिव्ये पन्नगाः परमार्चिते ॥१४-५७-५२॥
prasādya brāhmaṇaṃ te tu pādyam arghyaṃ nivedya ca. prāyacchan kuṇḍale divye pannagāḥ paramārcite ॥14-57-52॥
[प्रसाद्य (prasādya) - having propitiated; ब्राह्मणं (brāhmaṇam) - the Brāhmaṇa; ते (te) - your; तु (tu) - but; पाद्यम् (pādyam) - water to wash the feet; अर्घ्यम् (arghyam) - offering of respect; निवेद्य (nivedya) - having presented; च (ca) - and; प्रायच्छन् (prāyacchan) - they gave; कुण्डले (kuṇḍale) - earrings; दिव्ये (divye) - divine; पन्नगाः (pannagāḥ) - the serpents; परमार्चिते (paramārcite) - highly honored;]
(Having propitiated the Brāhmaṇa, your, but, water for washing the feet, offering of respect, having presented and, they gave earrings divine, the serpents, highly honored.)
But the serpents, having propitiated your Brāhmaṇa and having presented water for washing the feet and offering of respect, gave him highly honored divine earrings. (14-57-52)
ततः सम्पूजितो नागैस्तत्रोत्तङ्कः प्रतापवान्। अग्निं प्रदक्षिणं कृत्वा जगाम गुरुसद्म तत् ॥१४-५७-५३॥
tataḥ sampūjito nāgais tatrottankaḥ pratāpavān। agniṁ pradakṣiṇaṁ kṛtvā jagāma gurusadma tat ॥14-57-53॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सम्पूजितः (sampūjitaḥ) - having been honored; नागैः (nāgaiḥ) - by the nāgas; तत्र (tatra) - there; उत्तङ्कः (uttaṅkaḥ) - Uttanka; प्रतापवान् (pratāpavān) - full of majesty; अग्निं (agniṁ) - fire; प्रदक्षिणं (pradakṣiṇam) - circumambulation; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having performed; जगाम (jagāma) - he went; गुरुसद्म (gurusadma) - teacher's abode; तत् (tat) - that;]
(Then having been honored by the nāgas there, Uttanka, full of majesty, having circumambulated the fire, went to that teacher's abode.)
Then, being honored by the nāgas there, the illustrious Uttanka, after circumambulating the fire, went to the teacher's dwelling. (14-57-53)
स गत्वा त्वरितो राजन्गौतमस्य निवेशनम्। प्रायच्छत्कुण्डले दिव्ये गुरुपत्न्यै तदानघ ॥१४-५७-५४॥
sa gatvā tvarito rājan gautamasya niveśanam। prāyacchat kuṇḍale divye gurupatnyai tadānagha ॥14-57-54॥
[स (sa) - he; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; त्वरितः (tvaritaḥ) - hastily; quickly; राजन् (rājan) - O king; गौतमस्य (gautamasya) - of Gautama; निवेशनम् (niveśanam) - abode; residence; प्रायच्छत् (prāyacchat) - he gave; कुण्डले (kuṇḍale) - earrings; दिव्ये (divye) - divine; गुरुपत्न्यै (gurupatnyai) - to the Guru’s wife; तदा (tadā) - then; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one;]
(He, having gone hastily, O king, to the abode of Gautama, then gave the divine earrings to the Guru’s wife, O sinless one.)
He quickly went, O king, to the house of Gautama and then gave the divine earrings to the Guru’s wife, O sinless one. (14-57-54)
एवं महात्मना तेन त्रीँल्लोकाञ्जनमेजय। परिक्रम्याहृते दिव्ये ततस्ते मणिकुण्डले ॥१४-५७-५५॥
evaṃ mahātmanā tena trīṃl lokāñ janamejaya । parikramyāhṛte divye tataḥ te maṇikuṇḍale ॥14-57-55॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - by the great-souled one; तेन (tena) - by him; त्रीँल्लोकान् (trīṃl lokān) - three worlds; जनमेजय (janamejaya) - Janamejaya; (proper noun) परिक्रम्य (parikramya) - having circumambulated; आहृते (āhṛte) - having brought; दिव्ये (divye) - divine; ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - those; मणिकुण्डले (maṇikuṇḍale) - jeweled earrings;]
(Thus by that great-souled one, Janamejaya, having circumambulated the three worlds, having brought the divine, then those jeweled earrings.)
Thus, by that great-souled one, Janamejaya, after circumambulating the three worlds and bringing back the divine jeweled earrings, then (he possessed) those earrings. (14-57-55)
एवम्प्रभावः स मुनिरुत्तङ्को भरतर्षभ। परेण तपसा युक्तो यन्मां त्वं परिपृच्छसि ॥१४-५७-५६॥
evaṃ-prabhāvaḥ sa munir-uttaṅko bharatarṣabha। pareṇa tapasā yukto yan māṃ tvaṃ paripṛcchasi ॥14-57-56॥
[एवम्-प्रभावः (evaṃ-prabhāvaḥ) - thus powerful; सः (saḥ) - he; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; उत्तङ्कः (uttaṅkaḥ) - Uttaṅka; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of Bhāratas; परेण (pareṇa) - supreme; तपसा (tapasā) - with austerity; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - endowed; यत् (yat) - which; माम् (mām) - me; त्वम् (tvam) - you; परिपृच्छसि (paripṛcchasi) - (you) enquire;]
(Thus powerful, he, the sage Uttaṅka, O best of Bhāratas, with supreme austerity endowed, which me you enquire.)
O best of the Bhāratas, he, the sage Uttaṅka, being thus powerful and endowed with supreme austerity, is the very one about whom you are asking me. (14-57-56)
