vāsudevena vasudevaṃ prati yuddhākhyānam
A narration of the battle by Vāsudeva directed towards Vāsudeva.
janamejaya uvāca॥
Janamejaya said.
uttaṅkāya varaṃ dattvā govindo dvijasattama. ata ūrdhvaṃ mahābāhuḥ kiṃ cakāra mahāyaśāḥ ॥14-58-1॥
After granting a boon to Uttanka, O best of twice-born, what did the mighty-armed, greatly renowned Govinda do thereafter? (14-58-1)
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
Vaiśampāyana said.
dattvā varam-uttaṅkāya prāyāt-sātyakinā saha। dvārakām-eva govindaḥ śīghravegair-mahāhayaiḥ॥14-58-2॥
After granting the boon to Uttaṅka, Govinda departed with Sātyaki to Dvārakā, riding great horses of swift speed. (14-58-2)
sarāṁsi ca nadīścaiva vanāni vividhāni ca। atikramya sasādātha ramyāṁ dvāravatīṁ purīm॥14-58-3॥
Having crossed lakes, rivers, and various forests, he then reached the beautiful city of Dvāravatī. (14-58-3)
vartamāne mahārāja mahe raivatakasya ca। upāyāt puṇḍarīkākṣaḥ yuyudhānānugaḥ tadā॥14-58-4॥
O great king, at that time, the lotus-eyed one, accompanied by Yuyudhāna, approached the great festival of Raivataka. (14-58-4)
alaṅkṛtastu sa girir nānārūpavicitritaiḥ। babhau rukmamayaiḥ kāśaiḥ sarvataḥ puruṣarṣabha ॥14-58-5॥
But that mountain, beautifully decorated in various forms, shone on all sides with golden beams, O best of men. (14-58-5)
kāñcanasragbhir agryābhiḥ sumanobhis tathaiva ca। vāsobhiś ca mahāśailaḥ kalpavṛkṣaiś ca sarvaśaḥ॥14-58-6॥
The great mountain was entirely adorned with garlands of gold, exquisite flowers, garments, and wish-fulfilling trees. (14-58-6)
dīpavṛkṣaiś ca sauvarṇair abhīkṣṇam upaśobhitaḥ। guhā-nirjhara-deśeṣu divā-bhūto babhūva ha ॥14-58-7॥
Continuously adorned with golden lamp-trees, he indeed became like day in the regions of caves and waterfalls. (14-58-7)
patākābhir vicitrābhiḥ saghaṇṭābhiḥ samantataḥ. pumbhiḥ strībhiś ca saṅghuṣṭaḥ pragīta iva ca abhavat. atīva prekṣaṇīyaḥ abhūt meruḥ munigaṇaiḥ iva. 14-58-8.
With colourful banners adorned with bells all around, and filled with men and women, echoing as though songs were sung, Mount Meru became extremely beautiful to behold, as if surrounded by groups of sages. (14-58-8)
mattānāṃ hṛṣṭarūpāṇāṃ strīṇāṃ puṃsāṃ ca bhārata। gāyatāṃ parvatendrasya divaspṛgiva nisvanaḥ ॥14-58-9॥
O Bhārata, the resounding sound from intoxicated, joyous men and women singing on the king of mountains was like a sound reaching to the sky. (14-58-9)
pramattamatta-saṁmatta-kṣveḍitotkṛṣṭasaṅkulā। tathā kilakilāśabdair bhūr abhūt sumanoharā ॥14-58-10॥
Filled with the tumult of drunken, intoxicated, and maddened beings and excellent cries, the earth thus became exceedingly charming with the resounding 'kilakila' sounds. (14-58-10)
vipaṇāpaṇavān ramyo bhakṣyabhojyavihāravān। vastramālyotkarayuto vīṇāveṇumṛdaṅgavān ॥14-58-11॥
It was charming, filled with shops and markets, abundant with food, pleasure-houses, piles of garments and garlands, and provided with vīṇās, flutes, and drums. (14-58-11)
surā-maireya-miśreṇa bhakṣya-bhojyen a caiva ha। dīna-andha-kṛpaṇādibhyo dīyamānena ca aniśam॥ babhau parama-kalyāṇo mahas tasya mahā-gireḥ॥14-58-12॥
The radiance of the great mountain, possessing supreme auspiciousness, shone forth, with offerings of surā, maireya, foods and delicacies, and with constant giving to the poor, blind, and needy. (14-58-12)
puṇyāvasathavān vīra puṇyakṛdbhir niṣevitaḥ। vihāro vṛṣṇivīrāṇāṃ mahe raivatakasya ha ॥ sa nago veśmasaṅkīrṇo devaloka ivābabhau ॥14-58-13॥
O hero, the park of the Vṛṣṇi heroes, possessing holy abodes and frequented by the virtuous, on the great Raivataka mountain, that mountain, adorned with mansions, shone as if it were the abode of the gods. (14-58-13)
tadā ca kṛṣṇasānnidhyam āsādya bharatarṣabha। śakrasadmapratīkāśo babhūva sa hi śailarāṭ ॥14-58-14॥
Then, O best of the Bharatas, having the presence of Kṛṣṇa, the king of mountains indeed became like the palace of Indra. (14-58-14)
tataḥ sampūjyamānaḥ sa viveśa bhavanaṃ śubham। govindaḥ sātyakiścaiva jagāma bhavanaṃ svakam॥14-58-15॥
Thereafter, being honored, he entered the auspicious house. Govinda and Satyaki also went to their own house. (14-58-15)
viveśa ca sa hṛṣṭātmā cirakālapravāsakaḥ। kṛtvā na sukaraṃ karma dānaveṣviva vāsavaḥ॥14-58-16॥
He, rejoicing in spirit after a long exile, entered just as Vasava (Indra), having accomplished a deed among the danavas that was not easy. (14-58-16)
upayātaṃ tu vārṣṇeyaṃ bhoja-vṛṣṇy-andhakās tadā। abhyagacchan mahātmānaṃ devā iva śatakratum ॥14-58-17॥
But then the Bhojas, Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas approached the descendant of Vṛṣṇi, approaching the great-souled one as the gods approach Indra. (14-58-17)
sa tān abhyarcya medhāvī pṛṣṭvā ca kuśalaṃ tadā। abhyavādayata prītaḥ pitaraṃ mātaraṃ tathā॥14-58-18॥
He, the wise one, after greeting them and asking about their well-being, happily saluted his father and also his mother. (14-58-18)
tābhyāṃ ca sampariṣvaktaḥ sāntvitaś ca mahābhujaḥ। upopaviṣṭas taiḥ sarvair vṛṣṇibhiḥ parivāritaḥ॥14-58-19॥
Embraced and consoled by those two, the mighty-armed one sat surrounded by all the Vṛṣṇis. (14-58-19)
sa viśrānto mahātejāḥ kṛtapādāvasecanaḥ। kathayām āsa taṁ kṛṣṇaḥ pṛṣṭaḥ pitrā mahāhavam ॥14-58-20॥
He, being rested and radiant, having washed his feet, Kṛṣṇa, when questioned by his father, narrated that great battle. (14-58-20)
