śrutavānasmi vārṣṇeya saṅgrāmaṃ paramādbhutam। narāṇāṃ vadatāṃ putra kathodghāteṣu nityaśaḥ ॥14-59-1॥
[श्रुतवान् (śrutavān) - heard; have listened; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; वार्ष्णेय (vārṣṇeya) - O descendant of Vṛṣṇi; सङ्ग्रामम् (saṅgrāmam) - battle; परमाद्भुतम् (paramādbhutam) - most wonderful; नराणाम् (narāṇām) - of men; वदताम् (vadatām) - speaking; narrating; पुत्र (putra) - O son; कथोद्घातेषु (kathodghāteṣu) - in the introductions to stories; नित्यशः (nityaśaḥ) - constantly; always;]
(I have heard, O descendant of Vṛṣṇi, the most wonderful battle, among men speaking, O son, in the introductions to stories, constantly.)
O Vārṣṇeya, I have always heard about the most marvelous battle among men, O son, as recounted in story prologues. (14-59-1)
त्वं तु प्रत्यक्षदर्शी च कार्यज्ञश्च महाभुज। तस्मात्प्रब्रूहि सङ्ग्रामं याथातथ्येन मेऽनघ ॥१४-५९-२॥
tvaṃ tu pratyakṣadarśī ca kāryajñaś ca mahābhuja। tasmāt prabrūhi saṅgrāmaṃ yāthātathyena me 'nagha॥14-59-2॥

(You but directly-seeing and knower-of-facts and O mighty-armed; therefore tell the battle exactly as it happened to me, O sinless one.)
But you are a direct witness and knower of the facts, O mighty-armed one. Therefore, O sinless one, tell me about the battle exactly as it occurred. (14-59-2)
यथा तदभवद्युद्धं पाण्डवानां महात्मनाम्। भीष्मकर्णकृपद्रोणशल्यादिभिरनुत्तमम् ॥१४-५९-३॥
yathā tadabhavad yuddhaṃ pāṇḍavānāṃ mahātmanām। bhīṣma-karṇa-kṛpa-droṇa-śalyādibhir anuttamam ॥14-59-3॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; in what manner; as; like; as it was; as happens; तद् (tad) - that; that (battle); अभवत् (abhavat) - was; happened; became; युद्धम् (yuddham) - battle; war; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pāṇḍavas; belonging to the sons of Pāṇḍu; महात्मनाम् (mahātmanām) - of the great-souled; of the magnanimous; भीष्मकर्णकृपद्रोणशल्यादिभिः (bhīṣma-karṇa-kṛpa-droṇa-śalyādibhiḥ) - by Bhīṣma, Karṇa, Kṛpa, Droṇa, Śalya, and others; अनुत्तमम् (anuttamam) - unsurpassed; highest; incomparable;]
(Just as that battle of the Pāṇḍavas, the great-souled, unsurpassed, by Bhīṣma, Karṇa, Kṛpa, Droṇa, Śalya, and others, happened.)
Just as that unsurpassed battle involving the great Pāṇḍavas took place, fought by Bhīṣma, Karṇa, Kṛpa, Droṇa, Śalya and others. (14-59-3)
अन्येषां क्षत्रियाणां च कृतास्त्राणामनेकशः। नानावेषाकृतिमतां नानादेशनिवासिनाम् ॥१४-५९-४॥
anyeṣāṃ kṣatriyāṇāṃ ca kṛtāstrāṇām anekaśaḥ। nānāveṣākṛtimatāṃ nānādeśanivāsinām ॥14-59-4॥

And of other kṣatriyas, many of whom were skilled in weapons, possessing various appearances and forms, inhabitants from various regions. (14-59-4)
इत्युक्तः पुण्डरीकाक्षः पित्रा मातुस्तदन्तिके। शशंस कुरुवीराणां सङ्ग्रामे निधनं यथा ॥१४-५९-५॥

atyadbhutāni karmāṇi kṣatriyāṇāṁ mahātmanām। bahulatvānna saṅkhyātuṁ śakyānyabdaśatairapi ॥14-59-6॥

(Very wondrous deeds of the kṣatriyas, of the great-souled, because of abundance, not to enumerate, possible, with hundreds of years, even.)
The most wondrous deeds of the great-souled kṣatriyas, because of their abundance, cannot be enumerated even in hundreds of years. (14-59-6)
प्राधान्यतस्तु गदतः समासेनैव मे शृणु। कर्माणि पृथिवीशानां यथावदमरद्युते ॥१४-५९-७॥
prādhānyatastu gadataḥ samāsenaiva me śṛṇu। karmāṇi pṛthivīśānāṃ yathāvad amaradyute ॥14-59-7॥

But listen to me as I relate, giving precedence, the actions of the lords of the earth briefly and as they should be, O radiant among immortals. (14-59-7)
भीष्मः सेनापतिरभूदेकादशचमूपतिः। कौरव्यः कौरवेयाणां देवानामिव वासवः ॥१४-५९-८॥
bhīṣmaḥ senāpatir abhūd ekādaśa-camū-patiḥ। kauravyaḥ kauraveyāṇāṃ devānām iva vāsavaḥ॥14-59-8॥

शिखण्डी पाण्डुपुत्राणां नेता सप्तचमूपतिः। बभूव रक्षितो धीमान्धीमता सव्यसाचिना ॥१४-५९-९॥
śikhaṇḍī pāṇḍu-putrāṇāṃ netā sapta-camū-patiḥ। babhūva rakṣitaḥ dhīmān dhīmatā savyasācinā ॥14-59-9॥
[शिखण्डी (śikhaṇḍī) - Śikhaṇḍī; पाण्डुपुत्राणां (pāṇḍu-putrāṇām) - of the sons of Pāṇḍu; नेता (netā) - leader; सप्तचमूपतिः (sapta-camū-patiḥ) - seven divisions' lord; बभूव (babhūva) - became; रक्षितः (rakṣitaḥ) - protected; धीमान् (dhīmān) - wise; धीमता (dhīmatā) - by the wise; सव्यसाचिना (savyasācinā) - by Savyasācin (Arjuna);]

तेषां तदभवद्युद्धं दशाहानि महात्मनाम्। कुरूणां पाण्डवानां च सुमहद्रोमहर्षणम् ॥१४-५९-१०॥
teṣāṃ tad abhavad yuddhaṃ daśāhāni mahātmanām। kurūṇāṃ pāṇḍavānāṃ ca sumahad romaharṣaṇam ॥14-59-10॥
[तेषां (teṣāṃ) - of them; तत् (tat) - that; अभवत् (abhavat) - was; युद्धम् (yuddham) - battle; दशाहानि (daśāhāni) - ten days; महात्मनाम् (mahātmanām) - of the great-souled; कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kurus; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pāṇḍavas; च (ca) - and; सुमहत् (sumahat) - very great; रोमहर्षणम् (romaharṣaṇam) - hair-raising;]
(Of them, that battle was ten days, of the great-souled, of the Kurus and of the Pāṇḍavas, and very great, hair-raising.)
That battle between the great-souled Kurus and Pāṇḍavas lasted for ten days and was very great and hair-raising. (14-59-10)
ततः शिखण्डी गाङ्गेयमयुध्यन्तं महाहवे। जघान बहुभिर्बाणैः सह गाण्डीवधन्वना ॥१४-५९-११॥
tataḥ śikhaṇḍī gāṅgeyam ayudhyantam mahāhave. jaghāna bahubhir bāṇaiḥ saha gāṇḍīvadhanvanā ॥14-59-11॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; शिखण्डी (śikhaṇḍī) - Śikhaṇḍī; गाङ्गेयम् (gāṅgeyam) - son of Gaṅgā; अयुध्यन्तम् (ayudhyantam) - fighting; महाहवे (mahāhave) - in the great battle; जघान (jaghāna) - struck; बहुभिः (bahubhiḥ) - with many; बाणैः (bāṇaiḥ) - arrows; सह (saha) - together with; गाण्डीवधन्वना (gāṇḍīvadhanvanā) - with the wielder of Gāṇḍīva (Arjuna);]
(Then Śikhaṇḍī, the son of Gaṅgā, fighting in the great battle, struck with many arrows together with the wielder of Gāṇḍīva.)
Then Śikhaṇḍī, along with the wielder of Gāṇḍīva (Arjuna), struck Bhīṣma, the son of Gaṅgā, who was fighting in the great battle, with many arrows. (14-59-11)
अकरोत्स ततः कालं शरतल्पगतो मुनिः। अयनं दक्षिणं हित्वा सम्प्राप्ते चोत्तरायणे ॥१४-५९-१२॥
akarotsa tataḥ kālaṃ śarat alpagato muniḥ। ayanaṃ dakṣiṇaṃ hitvā samprāpte cottarāyaṇe॥14-59-12॥
[अकरोत् (akarot) - he did; he performed; स (sa) - he; ततः (tataḥ) - then; कालं (kālam) - time; period; शरतल्पगतः (śarat-alpa-gataḥ) - who had gone to a bed of grass (śara); मुनिः (muniḥ) - the sage; अयनं (ayanam) - the course; solstice; दक्षिणं (dakṣiṇam) - southern; हित्वा (hitvā) - having left; सम्प्राप्ते (samprāpte) - having arrived; च (ca) - and; उत्तरायणे (uttarāyaṇe) - in the northern solstice;]
(He did then the time, the sage who had gone to the bed of grass; having left the southern solstice, and when the northern solstice had arrived.)
Then, when the northern solstice arrived and the southern course had ended, the sage who lay on a bed of grass fulfilled his destined time. (14-59-12)
ततः सेनापतिरभूद्द्रोणोऽस्त्रविदुषां वरः। प्रवीरः कौरवेन्द्रस्य काव्यो दैत्यपतेरिव ॥१४-५९-१३॥
tataḥ senāpatir abhūd droṇo'straviduṣāṃ varaḥ। pravīraḥ kauravendrasya kāvyo daityapater iva॥14-59-13॥

(Then the commander of the army became Droṇa, the best among those skilled in weapons, the mighty hero of the Kaurava king, like Kāvya (Śukra) of the lord of daityas.)
Then Droṇa, the best among experts in weaponry, became the commander of the Kaurava king’s army, a mighty hero resembling Kāvya (Śukra) for the lord of the daityas. (14-59-13)
अक्षौहिणीभिः शिष्टाभिर्नवभिर्द्विजसत्तमः। संवृतः समरश्लाघी गुप्तः कृपवृषादिभिः ॥१४-५९-१४॥
akṣauhiṇībhiḥ śiṣṭābhir navabhir dvijasattamaḥ। saṁvṛtaḥ samaraślāghī guptaḥ kṛpavṛṣādibhiḥ॥14-59-14॥

धृष्टद्युम्नस्त्वभून्नेता पाण्डवानां महास्त्रवित्। गुप्तो भीमेन तेजस्वी मित्रेण वरुणो यथा ॥१४-५९-१५॥
dhṛṣṭadyumnas tv abhūn netā pāṇḍavānāṃ mahāstravit। gupto bhīmena tejasvī mitreṇa varuṇo yathā॥14-59-15॥

पञ्चसेनापरिवृतो द्रोणप्रेप्सुर्महामनाः। पितुर्निकारान्संस्मृत्य रणे कर्माकरोन्महत् ॥१४-५९-१६॥
pañcasenāparivṛto droṇaprepsur mahāmanāḥ। pitur nikārān saṁsmṛtya raṇe karmākaron mahat॥14-59-16॥

(In that, those kings of the earth in the battle of Droṇa and Pārṣata, heroes having come from various directions, for the most part, went to death.)
There, most of those earth's kings and heroes who had come from many directions to the battle of Droṇa and Pārṣata met their death. (14-59-17)
दिनानि पञ्च तद्युद्धमभूत्परमदारुणम्। ततो द्रोणः परिश्रान्तो धृष्टद्युम्नवशं गतः ॥१४-५९-१८॥
dināni pañca tadyuddham abhūt paramadāruṇam। tato droṇaḥ pariśrānto dhṛṣṭadyumnavaśaṃ gataḥ ॥14-59-18॥

(But three troops of the sons of Pāṇḍu, protected by Bhībhatsu (Arjuna), mostly with heroes slain, became, remained.)

(Then, Pārtha having approached, like a moth (approaches) fire, Sauti attained the state of being five (death) on the terrible second day.)

(When Karṇa was slain, but the Kauravas, dejected, their vigor destroyed, with three divisions of army surrounded the king of the Madras.)

हतवाहनभूयिष्ठाः पाण्डवास्तु युधिष्ठिरम्। अक्षौहिण्या निरुत्साहाः शिष्टया पर्यवारयन् ॥१४-५९-२३॥

अवधीन्मद्रराजानं कुरुराजो युधिष्ठिरः। तस्मिंस्तथार्धदिवसे कर्म कृत्वा सुदुष्करम् ॥१४-५९-२४॥
avadhīn madra-rājānam kuru-rājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। tasmiṁs tathā ardha-divase karma kṛtvā suduṣkaram ॥14-59-24॥

हते शल्ये तु शकुनिं सहदेवो महामनाः। आहर्तारं कलेस्तस्य जघानामितविक्रमः ॥१४-५९-२५॥

(When Śalya was slain, but Sahadeva, great-minded, Śakuni, the instigator of his strife, killed, of immeasurable valor.)

निहते शकुनौ राजा धार्तराष्ट्रः सुदुर्मनाः। अपाक्रामद्गदापाणिर्हतभूयिष्ठसैनिकः ॥१४-५९-२६॥

ततः शिष्टेन सैन्येन समन्तात्परिवार्य तम्। उपोपविविशुर्हृष्टा ह्रदस्थं पञ्च पाण्डवाः ॥१४-५९-२८॥

(Then he, the king, the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, was slain in the great battle by Bhīmasena after attacking, while the kings of the earth were watching.)

(Then that Pāṇḍava army, sleeping in the camp at night, was slain by Droṇa's son, not enduring the killing of his father.)
Then, because he could not bear his father's killing, Droṇa's son slew the sleeping Pāṇḍava army in their camp at night. (14-59-31)
हतपुत्रा हतबला हतमित्रा मया सह। युयुधानद्वितीयेन पञ्च शिष्टाः स्म पाण्डवाः ॥१४-५९-३२॥
hataputrā hatabalā hatamitrā mayā saha। yuyudhānadvitīyena pañca śiṣṭāḥ sma pāṇḍavāḥ ॥14-59-32॥
[हतपुत्रा (hataputrā) - having sons killed; हतबला (hatabalā) - having strength destroyed; हतमित्रा (hatamitrā) - having friends slain; मया (mayā) - by me; सह (saha) - with; युयुधानद्वितीयेन (yuyudhānadvitīyena) - with Yuyudhāna as the second; पञ्च (pañca) - five; शिष्टाः (śiṣṭāḥ) - remained; स्म (sma) - indeed; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas;]
(Having sons killed, having strength destroyed, having friends slain, with me, with Yuyudhāna as the second, five indeed remained—the Pāṇḍavas.)
The Pāṇḍavas, whose sons, strength, and friends were slain, remained five in number, together with me and accompanied by Yuyudhāna as the second. (14-59-32)
सहैव कृपभोजाभ्यां द्रौणिर्युद्धादमुच्यत। युयुत्सुश्चापि कौरव्यो मुक्तः पाण्डवसंश्रयात् ॥१४-५९-३३॥
sahaiva kṛpabhojābhyāṁ drauṇiryuddhādamucyata. yuyutsuścāpi kauravyo muktaḥ pāṇḍavasaṁśrayāt ॥14-59-33॥
[सहैव (sahaiva) - together indeed; कृपभोजाभ्यां (kṛpabhojābhyām) - with Kṛpa and Bhoja (Kṛpa and Kṛtavarman); द्रौणिः (drauṇiḥ) - the son of Droṇa (Aśvatthāman); युद्धात् (yuddhāt) - from the battle; अमुच्यत (amucyata) - was released; युयुत्सुः (yuyutsuḥ) - Yuyutsu; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; कौरव्यः (kauravyaḥ) - the descendant of Kuru; मुक्तः (muktaḥ) - was spared; पाण्डवसंश्रयात् (pāṇḍavasaṁśrayāt) - because of taking refuge with the Pāṇḍavas;]
(Together indeed with Kṛpa and Bhoja, the son of Droṇa was released from the battle. Yuyutsu also, the Kaurava, was spared because of taking refuge with the Pāṇḍavas.)
The son of Droṇa, along with Kṛpa and Kṛtavarman, was released from battle. Yuyutsu, the Kaurava, was also spared because he took refuge with the Pāṇḍavas. (14-59-33)
निहते कौरवेन्द्रे च सानुबन्धे सुयोधने। विदुरः सञ्जयश्चैव धर्मराजमुपस्थितौ ॥१४-५९-३४॥

(With the Kaurava king Suyodhana, together with his relatives, having been slain; Vidura and Sanjaya indeed approached the Dharma-king.)

evaṁ tad abhavad yuddham ahān yaṣṭādaśa prabho। yatra te pṛthivī-pālā nihatāḥ svargam āvasan ॥14-59-35॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; तत् (tad) - that; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; युद्धम् (yuddham) - battle; महान् (mahān) - great; यष्टादश (yaṣṭādaśa) - eighteen; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord; यत्र (yatra) - where; ते (te) - those; पृथिवीपालाः (pṛthivī-pālāḥ) - earth-kings; निहताः (nihatāḥ) - slain; स्वर्गम् (svargam) - heaven; आवसन् (āvasan) - entered;]
(Thus that battle became great, eighteen, O lord; where those earth-kings, slain, entered heaven.)
Thus, O lord, that great battle took place for eighteen (days), where those kings of the earth, having been slain, entered heaven. (14-59-35)

(Of those hearing but, O great king, that story, hair-raising; the afflictions of sorrow and joy of the Vṛṣṇis arose then.)
But as they listened, O great king, to that hair-raising story, then sorrows and joys befell the Vṛṣṇis. (14-59-36)
