kathayanneva tu tadā vāsudevaḥ pratāpavān। mahābhāratayuddhaṃ tatkathānte pituragrataḥ॥14-60-1॥
[कथयन् (kathayan) - narrating; एव (eva) - indeed; तु (tu) - but; तदा (tadā) - then; वासुदेवः (vāsudevaḥ) - Vāsudeva; प्रतापवान् (pratāpavān) - mighty; महाभारतयुद्धम् (mahābhāratayuddham) - the Mahābhārata war; तत्कथा-अन्ते (tat-kathānte) - at the end of that narration; पितुः (pituḥ) - before the father; अग्रतः (agrataḥ) - in presence;]
(Narrating indeed but then Vāsudeva, mighty, the Mahābhārata war, at the end of that narration, before the father, in presence.)
While still narrating, then Vāsudeva, the mighty one, recounted the Mahābhārata war at the end of that narration in the presence of his father. (14-60-1)
अभिमन्योर्वधं वीरः सोऽत्यक्रामत भारत। अप्रियं वसुदेवस्य मा भूदिति महामनाः ॥१४-६०-२॥
abhimanyor vadhaṁ vīraḥ so'tyakrāmat bhārata. apriyaṁ vasudevasya mā bhūd iti mahāmanāḥ ॥14-60-2॥

The hero, noble-minded, overcame the killing of Abhimanyu, O Bharata, so that nothing unpleasant should happen to Vasudeva. (14-60-2)
मा दौहित्रवधं श्रुत्वा वसुदेवो महात्ययम्। दुःखशोकाभिसन्तप्तो भवेदिति महामतिः ॥१४-६०-३॥
mā dauhitravadhaṃ śrutvā vasudevo mahātyayam। duḥkhaśokābhisantapto bhavediti mahāmatiḥ ॥14-60-3॥
[मा (mā) - not; दौहित्रवधं (dauhitravadham) - murder of the daughter's son; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; वसुदेवः (vasudevaḥ) - Vasudeva (proper noun); महात्ययम् (mahātyayam) - great calamity; दुःखशोकाभिसन्तप्तः (duḥkhaśokābhisantaptaḥ) - overwhelmed by sorrow and grief; भवेत् (bhavet) - may become; इति (iti) - thus; महामतिः (mahāmatiḥ) - the wise one;]
(Not the murder of the daughter's son having heard Vasudeva great calamity, overwhelmed by sorrow and grief may become thus the wise one.)
The wise one (thought that) if Vasudeva hears of the murder of his daughter's son, he may be overcome with great calamity and consumed by sorrow and grief. (14-60-3)
सुभद्रा तु तमुत्क्रान्तमात्मजस्य वधं रणे। आचक्ष्व कृष्ण सौभद्रवधमित्यपतद्भुवि ॥१४-६०-४॥
subhadrā tu tam-utkrāntam-ātmajasya vadhaṃ raṇe। ācakṣva kṛṣṇa saubhadra-vadham-iti apatat bhuvi॥14-60-4॥
[सुभद्रा (subhadrā) - Subhadrā; (proper noun, name;) तु (tu) - but; तमुत्क्रान्तम् (tam-utkrāntam) - him departed; (tam — him; utkrāntam — departed;) आत्मजस्य (ātmajasya) - of her son; वधं (vadhaṃ) - slaying; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; आचक्ष्व (ācakṣva) - speak; (imperative to address;) कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - Kṛṣṇa; (vocative case;) सौभद्रवधम् (saubhadra-vadham) - the slaying of (her) son of Subhadrā; (Subhadrā's son: Abhimanyu; vadham — slaying;) इति (iti) - thus; अपतत् (apatat) - fell; भुवि (bhuvi) - on the ground;]
(Subhadrā but him departed (her) son's slaying in battle, speak, O Kṛṣṇa, 'the slaying of the son of Subhadrā' thus—fell on the ground.)
But Subhadrā, upon learning from Kṛṣṇa of her son's slaying in battle, crying 'the slaying of the son of Subhadrā,' fell to the ground. (14-60-4)
तामपश्यन्निपतितां वसुदेवः क्षितौ तदा। दृष्ट्वैव च पपातोर्व्यां सोऽपि दुःखेन मूर्छितः ॥१४-६०-५॥
tām apaśyan nipatitāṃ vasudevaḥ kṣitau tadā। dṛṣṭvaiva ca papātorvyāṃ so'pi duḥkhena mūrcchitaḥ ॥14-60-5॥
[ताम् (tām) - her; अपश्यन् (apaśyan) - seeing; निपतिताम् (nipatitām) - fallen; वसुदेवः (vasudevaḥ) - Vasudeva; क्षितौ (kṣitau) - on the ground; तदा (tadā) - then; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; पपात (papāta) - fell; उर्व्याम् (urvyām) - on the earth; सः अपि (saḥ api) - he also; दुःखेन (duḥkhena) - from grief; मूर्छितः (mūrcchitaḥ) - fainted;]
(Seeing her fallen, Vasudeva then on the ground; having seen indeed and fell on the earth, he also from grief fainted.)
When Vasudeva saw her fallen on the ground, he too, seeing this, fell upon the earth and fainted from grief. (14-60-5)
ततः स दौहित्रवधाद्दुःखशोकसमन्वितः। वसुदेवो महाराज कृष्णं वाक्यमथाब्रवीत् ॥१४-६०-६॥
tataḥ sa dauhitṛavadhād duḥkhaśokasamanvitaḥ। vasudevo mahārāja kṛṣṇaṃ vākyam athābravīt ॥14-60-6॥

(Then he, afflicted with pain and grief from (his) daughter's son's killing, Vasudeva, O great king, to Krishna, words then said.)
Then, afflicted with pain and grief from the killing of his daughter's son, Vasudeva, O great king, spoke these words to Krishna. (14-60-6)
ननु त्वं पुण्डरीकाक्ष सत्यवाग्भुवि विश्रुतः। यद्दौहित्रवधं मेऽद्य न ख्यापयसि शत्रुहन् ॥१४-६०-७॥
nanu tvaṃ puṇḍarīkākṣa satyavāgbhuvi viśrutaḥ। yaddauhitravadhaṃ me'dya na khyāpayasi śatruhan ॥14-60-7॥

(Indeed you, lotus-eyed, truth-speaking, renowned on earth, destroyer of enemies, which grandson's killing my today not you proclaim.)
Indeed, you, O lotus-eyed one, who is renowned on earth as truth-speaking and a destroyer of enemies, do not declare today the killing of my grandson. (14-60-7)
तद्भागिनेयनिधनं तत्त्वेनाचक्ष्व मे विभो। सदृशाक्षस्तव कथं शत्रुभिर्निहतो रणे ॥१४-६०-८॥
tad-bhāgineya-nidhanaṃ tattvena-ācakṣva me vibho। sadṛśākṣaḥ tava kathaṃ śatrubhiḥ nihataḥ raṇe ॥14-60-8॥

(That cousin's death truly tell to me, O lord. Sadṛśākṣa, your, how by enemies slain in battle?)
O lord, truly tell me about that cousin's death. How was your Sadṛśākṣa slain by enemies in the battle? (14-60-8)
दुर्मरं बत वार्ष्णेय कालेऽप्राप्ते नृभिः सदा। यत्र मे हृदयं दुःखाच्छतधा न विदीर्यते ॥१४-६०-९॥
durmaraṃ bata vārṣṇeya kāle'prāpte nṛbhiḥ sadā। yatra me hṛdayaṃ duḥkhācchatadhā na vidīryate ॥14-60-9॥
[दुर्मरम् (durmaram) - hard to bear; बत (bata) - indeed; वार्ष्णेय (vārṣṇeya) - O son of Vṛṣṇi; कालेऽप्राप्ते (kāle 'aprāpte) - when the time has not come; नृभिः (nṛbhiḥ) - by men; सदा (sadā) - always; यत्र (yatra) - where; मे (me) - my; हृदयं (hṛdayam) - heart; दुःखात् (duḥkhāt) - from sorrow; शतधा (śatadhā) - into a hundred pieces; न (na) - not; विदीर्यते (vidīryate) - is torn apart;]
(Hard to bear indeed, O son of Vṛṣṇi, when the time has not come, by men always; where my heart, from sorrow, into a hundred pieces, is not torn apart.)
Indeed, O son of Vṛṣṇi, it is indeed hard to bear at all times among men when the destined time has not come; for, in such a situation, my heart is not torn into a hundred pieces by sorrow. (14-60-9)
किमब्रवीत्त्वा सङ्ग्रामे सुभद्रां मातरं प्रति। मां चापि पुण्डरीकाक्ष चपलाक्षः प्रियो मम ॥१४-६०-१०॥
kim abravīt tvā saṅgrāme subhadrāṃ mātaraṃ prati। māṃ ca api puṇḍarīkākṣa capalākṣaḥ priyaḥ mama ॥14-60-10॥
[किम् (kim) - what; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - did (he) say; त्वा (tvā) - to you; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; सुभद्राम् (subhadrām) - Subhadra; मातरम् (mātaram) - mother; प्रति (prati) - to; माम् (mām) - me; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; पुण्डरीकाक्ष (puṇḍarīkākṣa) - lotus-eyed; चपलाक्षः (capalākṣaḥ) - the restless-eyed; प्रियः (priyaḥ) - dear; मम (mama) - to me;]
(What did (he) say to you in battle to Subhadra, the mother, and me also, O lotus-eyed, the restless-eyed, dear to me?)
What did (he) say to you, to Subhadra my mother, and also to me in the battle, O lotus-eyed one, the restless-eyed who is dear to me? (14-60-10)
आहवं पृष्ठतः कृत्वा कच्चिन्न निहतः परैः। कच्चिन्मुखं न गोविन्द तेनाजौ विकृतं कृतम् ॥१४-६०-११॥
āhavaṃ pṛṣṭhataḥ kṛtvā kaccin na nihataḥ paraiḥ। kaccin mukhaṃ na govinda tenājau vikṛtaṃ kṛtam ॥14-60-11॥
[आहवं (āhavam) - battle; पृष्ठतः (pṛṣṭhataḥ) - from behind; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether; न (na) - not; निहतः (nihataḥ) - has been slain; परैः (paraiḥ) - by enemies; कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether; मुखम् (mukham) - face; न (na) - not; गोविन्द (govinda) - Govinda; तेन (tena) - by him; आजौ (ājau) - in battle; विकृतम् (vikṛtam) - disfigured; कृतम् (kṛtam) - has been made;]
(Having done battle from behind, whether not slain by enemies, whether the face not, O Govinda, by him in battle disfigured has been made.)
After having fought from behind, was he not killed by the enemies? O Govinda, was his face not disfigured by him in the battle? (14-60-11)
स हि कृष्ण महातेजाः श्लाघन्निव ममाग्रतः। बालभावेन विजयमात्मनोऽकथयत्प्रभुः ॥१४-६०-१२॥
sa hi kṛṣṇa mahātejāḥ ślāghan niva mamāgrataḥ। bālabhāvena vijayam ātmano'kathayat prabhuḥ॥14-60-12॥
[स (sa) - he; हि (hi) - indeed; कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - Kṛṣṇa; महातेजाः (mahātejāḥ) - of great splendor; श्लाघन् (ślāghan) - praising; इव (iva) - as if; ममाग्रतः (mama-agrataḥ) - in front of me; बालभावेन (bālabhāvena) - in the manner of a child; विजयम् (vijayam) - victory; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of himself; अकथयत् (akathayat) - he spoke; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord;]
(He indeed Kṛṣṇa of great splendor, as if praising in front of me, in the manner of a child, victory of himself, the lord spoke.)
Indeed, Kṛṣṇa, the lord of great splendor, as if praising himself like a child, spoke of his own victory in front of me. (14-60-12)
कच्चिन्न विकृतो बालो द्रोणकर्णकृपादिभिः। धरण्यां निहतः शेते तन्ममाचक्ष्व केशव ॥१४-६०-१३॥
kaccinna vikṛto bālo droṇa-karṇa-kṛpādibhiḥ। dharaṇyāṃ nihataḥ śete tan mamācakṣva keśava॥14-60-13॥
[कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether indeed; न (na) - not; विकृतः (vikṛtaḥ) - distorted; injured; बालः (bālaḥ) - boy; द्रोणकर्णकृपादिभिः (droṇa-karṇa-kṛpādibhiḥ) - by Droṇa, Karṇa, Kṛpa and others; धरण्याम् (dharaṇyām) - on the earth; निहतः (nihataḥ) - struck down; slain; शेते (śete) - lies; तत् (tat) - that; मम (mama) - to me; आचक्ष्व (ācakṣva) - tell; केशव (keśava) - Keśava;]
(Whether indeed not distorted boy by Droṇa, Karṇa, Kṛpa and others on the earth struck down lies, that to me tell, Keśava.)
Keśava, please tell me: Is the boy not disfigured, struck down on the earth by Droṇa, Karṇa, Kṛpa and others? (14-60-13)
स हि द्रोणं च भीष्मं च कर्णं च रथिनां वरम्। स्पर्धते स्म रणे नित्यं दुहितुः पुत्रको मम ॥१४-६०-१४॥
sa hi droṇaṃ ca bhīṣmaṃ ca karṇaṃ ca rathināṃ varam। spardhate sma raṇe nityaṃ duhituḥ putrako mama ॥14-60-14॥
[स (sa) - he; हि (hi) - verily; द्रोणं (droṇam) - Droṇa; च (ca) - and; भीष्मं (bhīṣmam) - Bhīṣma; च (ca) - and; कर्णं (karṇam) - Karna; च (ca) - and; रथिनां (rathinām) - of chariot-warriors; वरम् (varam) - the best; स्पर्धते (spardhate) - competes; स्म (sma) - indeed; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; नित्यं (nityam) - always; दुहितुः (duhituḥ) - of (my) daughter; पुत्रको (putrakaḥ) - the young son; मम (mama) - my;]
(He verily Droṇa and Bhīṣma and Karna and chariot-warriors' best competes indeed in battle always daughter's son my.)
For he, my daughter's young son, always used to compete in battle with Droṇa, Bhīṣma, Karṇa, and the best of the chariot-warriors. (14-60-14)
एवंविधं बहु तदा विलपन्तं सुदुःखितम्। पितरं दुःखिततरो गोविन्दो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥१४-६०-१५॥
evaṃ-vidhaṃ bahu tadā vilapantaṃ suduḥkhitam। pitaraṃ duḥkhitataro govindo vākyam abravīt ॥14-60-15॥
[एवंविधं (evaṃ-vidham) - of such kind; such; manner; बहु (bahu) - much; greatly; many; तदा (tadā) - then; at that time; विलपन्तं (vilapantam) - lamenting; bewailing; सुदुःखितम् (suduḥkhitam) - very afflicted; greatly distressed; पितरं (pitaraṃ) - father; दुःखिततरः (duḥkhitataraḥ) - more sorrowful; more afflicted; गोविन्दः (govindaḥ) - Govinda; (proper noun); वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; words; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; said;]
(Such kind much then lamenting very afflicted father more sorrowful Govinda words spoke.)
When his father, greatly distressed, was lamenting much in such a way, Govinda, who was even more sorrowful, spoke these words. (14-60-15)
न तेन विकृतं वक्त्रं कृतं सङ्ग्राममूर्धनि। न पृष्ठतः कृतश्चापि सङ्ग्रामस्तेन दुस्तरः ॥१४-६०-१६॥
na tena vikṛtaṃ vaktraṃ kṛtaṃ saṅgrāmamūrdhani। na pṛṣṭhataḥ kṛtaścāpi saṅgrāmas tena dustaraḥ॥14-60-16॥
[न (na) - not; तेन (tena) - by him; विकृतं (vikṛtaṃ) - distorted; वक्त्रं (vaktraṃ) - face; कृतं (kṛtaṃ) - made; सङ्ग्राममूर्धनि (saṅgrāmamūrdhani) - on the peak of battle; न (na) - not; पृष्ठतः (pṛṣṭhataḥ) - from behind; कृतश्च (kṛtaś ca) - was done and; अपि (api) - also; सङ्ग्रामः (saṅgrāmaḥ) - battle; तेन (tena) - by him; दुस्तरः (dustaraḥ) - difficult to cross;]
(Not by him was a distorted face made on the peak of battle. Nor was the battle by him difficult to cross done from behind also.)
He did not make a distorted face in the midst of battle, nor did he attempt to fight the difficult battle from behind. (14-60-16)
निहत्य पृथिवीपालान्सहस्रशतसङ्घशः। खेदितो द्रोणकर्णाभ्यां दौःशासनिवशं गतः ॥१४-६०-१७॥
nihatya pṛthivī-pālān sahasra-śata-saṅghaśaḥ | khedito droṇa-karṇābhyāṃ dauḥśāsani-vaśaṃ gataḥ ॥14-60-17॥
[निहत्य (nihatya) - having slain; पृथिवीपालान् (pṛthivīpālān) - the kings (protectors of the earth); सहस्रशतसङ्घशः (sahasra-śata-saṅghaśaḥ) - in thousands and hundreds of groups; खेदितः (kheditaḥ) - distressed; द्रोणकर्णाभ्याम् (droṇa-karṇābhyām) - by Droṇa and Karṇa; दौःशासनिवशं (dauḥśāsani-vaśam) - under the power of Duhśāsana; गतः (gataḥ) - gone;]
(Having slain the kings of the earth in thousands and hundreds of groups, (being) distressed by Droṇa and Karṇa, (he) became subject to Duhśāsana's power.)
After slaying kings of the earth in thousands and hundreds, and being distressed by Droṇa and Karṇa, he fell under the control of Duhśāsana. (14-60-17)
एको ह्येकेन सततं युध्यमानो यदि प्रभो। न स शक्येत सङ्ग्रामे निहन्तुमपि वज्रिणा ॥१४-६०-१८॥
eko hyekena satataṃ yudhyamāno yadi prabho। na sa śakyeta saṅgrāme nihantumapi vajriṇā ॥14-60-18॥
[एकः (ekaḥ) - one; singular being; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; एकेन (ekena) - by one; with one; सततम् (satatam) - constantly; always; युध्यमानः (yudhyamānaḥ) - fighting; engaging in battle; यदि (yadi) - if; प्रभो (prabho) - O master; O lord; न (na) - not; सः (saḥ) - he; शक्येत (śakyeta) - would be able; can; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; निहन्तुम् (nihantum) - to kill; to slay; अपि (api) - even; वज्रिणा (vajriṇā) - by the wielder of the thunderbolt (Indra);]
(One indeed, by one, constantly fighting, if, O master, not he would be able in battle to slay even by the wielder of the thunderbolt.)
O master, even if a single person were to fight constantly against another single person, he could not be slain in battle even by Indra, the wielder of the thunderbolt. (14-60-18)
समाहूते तु सङ्ग्रामे पार्थे संशप्तकैस्तदा। पर्यवार्यत सङ्क्रुद्धैः स द्रोणादिभिराहवे ॥१४-६०-१९॥
samāhūte tu saṅgrāme pārthe sanśaptakaistadā। paryavāryata saṅkruddhaiḥ sa droṇādibhirāhave ॥14-60-19॥
[समाहूते (samāhūte) - having been summoned together; तु (tu) - but; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in the battle; पार्थे (pārthe) - to Pārtha; संशप्तकैः (sanśaptakaiḥ) - by the Saṃśaptakas; तदा (tadā) - then; पर्यवार्यत (paryavāryata) - was surrounded; सङ्क्रुद्धैः (saṅkruddhaiḥ) - by those greatly enraged; स (sa) - he; द्रोणादिभिः (droṇādibhiḥ) - by Droṇa and others; आहवे (āhave) - in the battle;]
(But in the battle, when Pārtha was summoned together by the Saṃśaptakas, then he was surrounded by those greatly enraged, he by Droṇa and others in the battle.)
But in the battle, when Pārtha was engaged by the Saṃśaptakas, he was then surrounded by the greatly enraged Droṇa and others in that fight. (14-60-19)
ततः शत्रुक्षयं कृत्वा सुमहान्तं रणे पितुः। दौहित्रस्तव वार्ष्णेय दौःशासनिवशं गतः ॥१४-६०-२०॥
tataḥ śatrukṣayaṃ kṛtvā sumahāntaṃ raṇe pituḥ। dauhitras tava vārṣṇeya dauḥśāsanivaśaṃ gataḥ ॥14-60-20॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; शत्रुक्षयं (śatrukṣayam) - destruction of enemies; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having accomplished; सुमहान्तं (sumahāntam) - very great; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; पितुः (pituḥ) - of the father; दौहित्रः (dauhitraḥ) - daughter's son; तव (tava) - your; वार्ष्णेय (vārṣṇeya) - O descendant of Vṛṣṇi; दौःशासनिवशं (dauḥśāsanivaśam) - to Daśāsani (Duhshasana)'s control; गतः (gataḥ) - went;]
(Then, having accomplished the very great destruction of enemies in battle of his father, your daughter's son, O Vārṣṇeya, went to the control of Duhśāsani.)
Then, after achieving the immense destruction of his father's enemies in battle, your daughter's son, O Vārṣṇeya, fell under the power of Duhśāsani. (14-60-20)
नूनं च स गतः स्वर्गं जहि शोकं महामते। न हि व्यसनमासाद्य सीदन्ते सन्नराः क्वचित् ॥१४-६०-२१॥
nūnaṁ ca sa gataḥ svargaṁ jahi śokaṁ mahāmate। na hi vyasanam āsādya sīdante san narāḥ kvacit ॥14-60-21॥
[नूनं (nūnam) - certainly; च (ca) - and; स (sa) - he; गतः (gataḥ) - has gone; स्वर्गं (svargam) - to heaven; जहि (jahi) - abandon; शोकं (śokam) - grief; महामते (mahāmate) - O great-minded one; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; व्यसनम् (vyasanam) - misfortune; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having encountered; सीदन्ते (sīdante) - sink; सत् (san) - good; नराः (narāḥ) - men; क्वचित् (kvacit) - at any time;]
(Certainly and he has gone to heaven; abandon grief, O great-minded one. Not indeed having encountered misfortune do good men ever sink at any time. (14-60-21))
Certainly, he has gone to heaven; so abandon your grief, O great-minded one. Good men never succumb when faced with misfortune. (14-60-21)
द्रोणकर्णप्रभृतयो येन प्रतिसमासिताः। रणे महेन्द्रप्रतिमाः स कथं नाप्नुयाद्दिवम् ॥१४-६०-२२॥
droṇakarṇaprabhṛtayo yena pratismāsitāḥ। raṇe mahendrapratimāḥ sa kathaṃ nāpnuyāddivam ॥14-60-22॥
[द्रोणकर्णप्रभृतयः (droṇakarṇaprabhṛtayaḥ) - Drona, Karna and the rest; येन (yena) - by whom; प्रतिसमासिताः (pratisamāsitāḥ) - have been opposed; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; महेन्द्रप्रतिमाः (mahendrapratimāḥ) - equal to Mahendra (Indra); सः (saḥ) - he; कथम् (katham) - how; नाप्नुयात् (nāpnuyāt) - would not attain; दिवम् (divam) - heaven;]
(Drona, Karna and the rest by whom have been opposed in battle, equal to Mahendra (Indra), he how would not attain heaven.)
How could he, who opposed in battle Drona, Karna and others, those equal to Mahendra (Indra), not attain heaven? (14-60-22)
स शोकं जहि दुर्धर्ष मा च मन्युवशं गमः। शस्त्रपूतां हि स गतिं गतः परपुरञ्जयः ॥१४-६०-२३॥
sa śokaṃ jahi durdharṣa mā ca manyuvaśaṃ gamaḥ। śastrapūtāṃ hi sa gatiṃ gataḥ parapurañjayaḥ॥14-60-23॥
[स (sa) - he; शोकं (śokam) - grief; जहि (jahi) - abandon; दुर्धर्ष (durdharṣa) - O unconquerable one; मा (mā) - do not; च (ca) - and; मन्युवशं (manyuvaśam) - under the control of anger; गमः (gamaḥ) - go; शस्त्रपूतां (śastrapūtām) - purified by weapons; हि (hi) - indeed; स (sa) - he; गतिं (gatiṃ) - state; गतः (gataḥ) - has attained; परपुरञ्जयः (parapurañjayaḥ) - conqueror of enemy cities;]
(He grief abandon, O unconquerable one, and do not under the control of anger go. Purified by weapons indeed, he the state has attained, conqueror of enemy cities.)
Abandon grief, O unconquerable one, and do not fall under the sway of anger. He, the conqueror of enemy cities, has indeed attained the state purified by weapons. (14-60-23)
तस्मिंस्तु निहते वीरे सुभद्रेयं स्वसा मम। दुःखार्ताथो पृथां प्राप्य कुररीव ननाद ह ॥१४-६०-२४॥
tasmiṁs tu nihate vīre subhadrā iyaṁ svasā mama। duḥkhārtā atho pṛthāṁ prāpya kurarī iva nanāda ha ॥14-60-24॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in him; तु (tu) - but; निहते (nihate) - having been slain; वीरे (vīre) - hero; सुभद्रा (subhadrā) - Subhadrā; इयम् (iyaṁ) - this; स्वसा (svasā) - sister; मम (mama) - my; दुःखार्ता (duḥkhārtā) - afflicted by sorrow; अथ (atha) - then; उ (u) - indeed; पृथाम् (pṛthām) - Pṛthā (Kuntī); प्राप्य (prāpya) - having approached; कुररी (kurarī) - (like a) female osprey; इव (iva) - like; ननाद (nanāda) - she wailed; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(But in him, the hero, having been slain, this Subhadrā, my sister, afflicted by sorrow, then indeed, having approached Pṛthā, like a female osprey, wailed indeed.)
But when the hero was slain, Subhadrā—my sister—afflicted by sorrow, then indeed, having approached Pṛthā, wailed like a female osprey. (14-60-24)
द्रौपदीं च समासाद्य पर्यपृच्छत दुःखिता। आर्ये क्व दारकाः सर्वे द्रष्टुमिच्छामि तानहम् ॥१४-६०-२५॥
draupadīṁ ca samāsādya paryapṛcchata duḥkhitā। ārye kva dārakāḥ sarve draṣṭum icchāmi tān aham॥14-60-25॥
[द्रौपदीं (draupadīṁ) - Draupadī (accusative case); च (ca) - and; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; पर्यपृच्छत (paryapṛcchata) - she asked; दुःखिता (duḥkhitā) - distressed; आर्ये (ārye) - O noble lady; क्व (kva) - where; दारकाः (dārakāḥ) - children; सर्वे (sarve) - all; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I desire; तान् (tān) - them; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(And having approached Draupadī, (she) distressed, asked: O noble lady, where (are) all the children? I desire to see them.)
Distressed, she approached Draupadī and asked, "O noble lady, where are all the children? I wish to see them." (14-60-25)
अस्यास्तु वचनं श्रुत्वा सर्वास्ताः कुरुयोषितः। भुजाभ्यां परिगृह्यैनां चुक्रुशुः परमार्तवत् ॥१४-६०-२६॥
asyāstu vacanaṃ śrutvā sarvāstāḥ kuruyoṣitaḥ। bhujābhyāṃ parigṛhya enāṃ cukruśuḥ paramārtavat॥14-60-26॥
[अस्याः (asyāḥ) (asyāḥ) - her; तु (tu) (tu) - but; वचनम् (vacanam) (vacanam) - speech; statement; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) (śrutvā) - having heard; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) (sarvāḥ) - all; ताः (tāḥ) (tāḥ) - those; they; कुरुयोषितः (kuruyoṣitaḥ) (kuruyoṣitaḥ) - Kuru women; women of the Kuru (family); भुजाभ्यां (bhujābhyām) (bhujābhyām) - with arms; परिगृह्य (parigṛhya) (parigṛhya) - having embraced; having taken; एनाम् (enām) (enām) - her (this one); चुक्रुशुः (cukruśuḥ) (cukruśuḥ) - cried out; wailed; परमार्तवत् (paramārtavat) (paramārtavat) - with utmost grief; very piteously;]
(But having heard her statement, all those Kuru women, having embraced her with (their) arms, wailed with utmost grief.)
But when they heard her words, all the women of the Kuru family embraced her with their arms and cried out in great distress. (14-60-26)
उत्तरां चाब्रवीद्भद्रा भद्रे भर्ता क्व ते गतः। क्षिप्रमागमनं मह्यं तस्मै त्वं वेदयस्व ह ॥१४-६०-२७॥
uttarāṃ cābravīd bhadrā bhadre bhartā kva te gataḥ। kṣipram āgamanaṃ mahyaṃ tasmai tvaṃ vedayasva ha॥14-60-27॥
[उत्तरां (uttarām) - (she) replied; च (ca) - and; अब्रवीद् (abravīt) - said; भद्रा (bhadrā) - Bhadra; भद्रे (bhadre) - O auspicious one; भर्ता (bhartā) - husband; क्व (kva) - where; ते (te) - your; गतः (gataḥ) - gone; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; आगमनम् (āgamanam) - coming; मम (mama) - to me; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; त्वम् (tvam) - you; वेदयस्व (vedayasva) - inform; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(And replied Bhadra: "O auspicious one, where has your husband gone? Quickly his coming to me, to him you must indeed inform.")
Bhadra replied: "O good lady, where has your husband gone? Quickly inform him that I have come." (14-60-27)
ननु नाम स वैराटि श्रुत्वा मम गिरं पुरा। भवनान्निष्पतत्याशु कस्मान्नाभ्येति ते पतिः ॥१४-६०-२८॥
nanu nāma sa vairāṭi śrutvā mama giraṃ purā। bhavanān niṣpataty āśu kasmān nābhyeti te patiḥ॥14-60-28॥
[ननु (nanu) - indeed; surely; नाम (nāma) - just; indeed; स (sa) - he; वैराटि (vairāṭi) - O daughter of Virāṭa; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; मम (mama) - my; गिरं (giraṃ) - words; speech; पुरा (purā) - before; earlier; भवनात् (bhavanāt) - from (the) dwelling; निष्पतत्य (niṣpatati) - comes out; emerges; आशु (āśu) - quickly; कस्मात् (kasmāt) - why; न (na) - not; अभ्येति (abhyeti) - approaches; comes near; ते (te) - to you; पतिः (patiḥ) - husband;]
(Indeed just he, O daughter of Virāṭa, having heard my words before, from the dwelling comes out quickly; why does your husband not approach you?)
Surely, O daughter of Virāṭa, having previously heard my words, he comes out quickly from the house; why does your husband not come to you? (14-60-28)
अभिमन्यो कुशलिनो मातुलास्ते महारथाः। कुशलं चाब्रुवन्सर्वे त्वां युयुत्सुमिहागतम् ॥१४-६०-२९॥
abhimanyo kuśalino mātulās te mahārathāḥ। kuśalaṃ cābruvansarve tvāṃ yuyutsum ihāgatam॥14-60-29॥
[अभिमन्यो (abhimanyu) - Abhimanyu; कुशलिनः (kuśalinaḥ) - well (his) welfare (is good); मातुलाः (mātulāḥ) - maternal uncles; ते (te) - your; महारथाः (mahārathāḥ) - great warriors; कुशलं (kuśalam) - welfare; च (ca) - and; अब्रुवन् (abrūvan) - they spoke; सर्वे (sarve) - all (of them); त्वाम् (tvām) - you; युयुत्सुम् (yuyutsum) - desiring to fight; इह (iha) - here; आगतम् (āgatam) - arrived;]
(Abhimanyu (is) well; (your) maternal uncles (the) great warriors (are) well; and all (of them) spoke welfare (to) you desiring to fight arrived here.)
Abhimanyu is well; your maternal uncles, the great warriors, are also well; and all of them wished you well as you have arrived here, desiring to fight. (14-60-29)
आचक्ष्व मेऽद्य सङ्ग्रामं यथापूर्वमरिंदम। कस्मादेव विलपतीं नाद्येह प्रतिभाषसे ॥१४-६०-३०॥
ācakṣva me'dya saṅgrāmaṃ yathā-pūrvam ariṃdama. kasmād eva vilapatīṃ nādyeha pratibhāṣase ॥14-60-30॥
[आचक्ष्व (ācakṣva) - declare; let it be said; मे (me) - to me; अद्य (adya) - today; सङ्ग्रामं (saṅgrāmaṃ) - battle; यथापूर्वम् (yathā-pūrvam) - as before; अरिंदम (ariṃdama) - O subduer of enemies; कस्मात् (kasmāt) - for what reason; एव (eva) - indeed; विलपतीं (vilapatīṃ) - lamenting; न (na) - not; अद्य (adya) - today; इह (iha) - here; प्रतिभाषसे (pratibhāṣase) - do you reply;]
(Declare to me today the battle as before, O subduer of enemies. For what reason, indeed, to the lamenting one do you not today here reply?)
Tell me today about the battle as before, O subduer of enemies. Why indeed do you not respond here today to the lamenting one? (14-60-30)
एवमादि तु वार्ष्णेय्यास्तदस्याः परिदेवितम्। श्रुत्वा पृथा सुदुःखार्ता शनैर्वाक्यमथाब्रवीत् ॥१४-६०-३१॥
evamādi tu vārṣṇeyyās tadasyāḥ paridevitam। śrutvā pṛthā suduḥkhārtā śanair vākyam athābravīt ॥14-60-31॥
[एवमादि (evamādi) - such-like; beginning thus; तु (tu) - but; वार्ष्णेय्याः (vārṣṇeyyāḥ) - of the descendants of Vṛṣṇi; तत् (tat) - that; अस्या (asyāḥ) - of her; परिदेवितम् (paridevitam) - lamentation; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; पृथा (pṛthā) - Pṛthā; सुदुःखार्ता (suduḥkhārtā) - greatly afflicted with sorrow; शनैः (śanaiḥ) - slowly; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(Such-like but the Vṛṣṇis, that lamentation of her, having heard, Pṛthā, greatly afflicted with sorrow, slowly, words, then, spoke.)
But when the Vṛṣṇis thus heard her lamentation, Pṛthā, greatly afflicted with sorrow, slowly spoke these words. (14-60-31)
सुभद्रे वासुदेवेन तथा सात्यकिना रणे। पित्रा च पालितो बालः स हतः कालधर्मणा ॥१४-६०-३२॥
subhadre vāsudevena tathā sātyakinā raṇe। pitrā ca pālito bālaḥ sa hataḥ kāladharmaṇā ॥14-60-32॥
[सुभद्रे (subhadre) - by Subhadrā; (instrumental feminine sg.; Subhadrā, a proper name;) वासुदेवेन (vāsudevena) - by Vāsudeva; (instrumental masculine sg.; Vāsudeva, i.e., Kṛṣṇa;) तथा (tathā) - also; in the same manner; सात्यकिना (sātyakinā) - by Sātyaki; (instrumental masculine sg.; Sātyaki, a proper name;) रणे (raṇe) - in battle; (locative singular;) पित्रा (pitrā) - by (his) father; (instrumental masculine sg.;) च (ca) - and; पालितः (pālitaḥ) - protected; बालः (bālaḥ) - child; boy; स (sa) - he; हतः (hataḥ) - killed; कालधर्मणा (kāladharmaṇā) - by the law of time (i.e., fate); (instrumental singular;);]
(By Subhadrā, by Vāsudeva, likewise by Sātyaki in battle, by (his) father also protected child he killed by the law of time.)
The child who was protected by Subhadrā, by Vāsudeva, by Sātyaki in battle, and by his father as well, was killed by the decree of fate. (14-60-32)
ईदृशो मर्त्यधर्मोऽयं मा शुचो यदुनन्दिनि। पुत्रो हि तव दुर्धर्षः सम्प्राप्तः परमां गतिम् ॥१४-६०-३३॥
īdṛśo martya-dharmo'yaṃ mā śuco yadu-nandini. putro hi tava durdharṣaḥ samprāptaḥ paramāṃ gatim ॥14-60-33॥
[ईदृशः (īdṛśaḥ) - such as this; such; of this kind; मर्त्यधर्मः (martya-dharmaḥ) - mortal nature; the law of mortals; अयम् (ayam) - this; he; (this one); मा (mā) - do not; (imperative of negation); शुचः (śucaḥ) - grieve; lament; feel sorrow; यदुनन्दिनि (yadu-nandini) - O daughter of Yadu; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; तव (tava) - your; दुर्धर्षः (durdharṣaḥ) - unassailable; invincible; सम्प्राप्तः (samprāptaḥ) - has attained; has reached; परमाम् (paramām) - supreme; highest; गतिम् (gatim) - state; path; destination;]
(Such (is) mortal nature this. Do not grieve, O daughter of Yadu. Son indeed your unassailable has attained supreme state.)
Such is the nature of mortals, O daughter of Yadu; do not grieve. For your unassailable son has indeed attained the supreme state. (14-60-33)
कुले महति जातासि क्षत्रियाणां महात्मनाम्। मा शुचश्चपलाक्षं त्वं पुण्डरीकनिभेक्षणे ॥१४-६०-३४॥
kule mahati jātāsi kṣatriyāṇāṃ mahātmanām। mā śucash capalākṣaṃ tvaṃ puṇḍarīkanibhekṣaṇe ॥14-60-34॥
[कुले (kule) - in lineage; in family; महति (mahati) - great; exalted; जातासि (jātāsi) - you are born; क्षत्रियाणां (kṣatriyāṇām) - of kṣatriyas; of warriors; महात्मनाम् (mahātmanām) - of great-souled ones; मा (mā) - do not; शुचः (śucah) - grieve; चपलाक्षं (capalākṣaṃ) - O restless-eyed; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; पुण्डरीकनिभेक्षणे (puṇḍarīkanibhekṣaṇe) - O lotus-like eyed;]
(In a great lineage you are born, of kṣatriyas, of great-souled ones. Do not grieve, O restless-eyed, you, O lotus-like eyed.)
You are born in a great family, among kṣatriyas of noble soul. Do not grieve, O restless-eyed one, you of lotus-like eyes. (14-60-34)
उत्तरां त्वमवेक्षस्व गर्भिणीं मा शुचः शुभे। पुत्रमेषा हि तस्याशु जनयिष्यति भामिनी ॥१४-६०-३५॥
uttarāṃ tvam avekṣasva garbhiṇīṃ mā śucaḥ śubhe। putram eṣā hi tasyāśu janayiṣyati bhāminī ॥14-60-35॥
[उत्तराम् (uttarām) - Uttarā (proper noun, woman); त्वम् (tvam) - you; अवेक्षस्व (avekṣasva) - observe; look at; गर्भिणीम् (garbhiṇīm) - pregnant (woman); मा (mā) - do not; शुचः (śucaḥ) - grieve; शुभे (śubhe) - O auspicious one; पुत्रम् (putram) - son; एषा (eṣā) - this (woman); हि (hi) - indeed; तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - her; आशु (āśu) - soon; जनयिष्यति (janayiṣyati) - will give birth; भामिनी (bhāminī) - O shining one; O splendid lady;]
(Uttarā you observe, pregnant (woman), do not grieve, O auspicious one. Son this (woman) indeed her soon will give birth, O shining one.)
Observe Uttarā, she is pregnant; do not grieve, O auspicious one. She will soon give birth to his son, O splendid lady. (14-60-35)
एवमाश्वासयित्वैनां कुन्ती यदुकुलोद्वह। विहाय शोकं दुर्धर्षं श्राद्धमस्य ह्यकल्पयत् ॥१४-६०-३६॥
evam-āśvāsayitva-inām kuntī yadukula-udvaha। vihāya śokam durdharṣam śrāddham asya hi akalpayat ॥14-60-36॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; आश्वासयित्वा (āśvāsayitvā) - having consoled; एनाम् (enām) - her; कुन्ती (kuntī) - Kuntī; यदुकुलोद्वह (yadukula-udvaha) - scion of Yadu's lineage; विहाय (vihāya) - having abandoned; शोकम् (śokam) - grief; दुर्धर्षम् (durdharṣam) - insurmountable; श्राद्धम् (śrāddham) - funeral (ritual); अस्य (asya) - his; हि (hi) - indeed; अकल्पयत् (akalpayat) - she arranged;]
(Thus, having consoled her, Kuntī, O scion of Yadu's lineage, having abandoned the insurmountable grief, indeed arranged his funeral rite.)
Thus, after consoling her, Kuntī, O best of the Yadus, gave up her overwhelming grief and arranged for his funeral rites. (14-60-36)
समनुज्ञाप्य धर्मज्ञा राजानं भीममेव च। यमौ यमोपमौ चैव ददौ दानान्यनेकशः ॥१४-६०-३७॥
samanujñāpya dharmajñā rājānaṃ bhīmaṃ eva ca। yamau yamopamau caiva dadau dānāni anekaśaḥ॥14-60-37॥
[समनुज्ञाप्य (samanujñāpya) - having respectfully permitted; धर्मज्ञा (dharmajñāḥ) - those who know dharma; राजानं (rājānam) - the king; भीममेव (bhīmaṃ eva) - Bhima only; च (ca) - and; यमौ (yamau) - the two Yamas (the twins); यमोपमौ (yamopamau) - like Yama; चैव (ca eva) - and indeed; ददौ (dadau) - he gave; दानानि (dānāni) - gifts; अनेकशः (anekaśaḥ) - many times;]
(Having respectfully permitted those who know dharma, the king and Bhima only, and the two Yamas, indeed like Yama, he gave gifts many times.)
Having respectfully obtained the permission of those versed in dharma—the king, Bhima himself, and the twins who were like Yama—he gave countless gifts. (14-60-37)
ततः प्रदाय बह्वीर्गा ब्राह्मणेभ्यो यदूद्वह। समहृष्यत वार्ष्णेयी वैराटीं चाब्रवीदिदम् ॥१४-६०-३८॥
tataḥ pradāya bahvīr gā brāhmaṇebhyo yadūd-vaha। samahṛṣyata vārṣṇeyī vairāṭīṃ cābravīd idam ॥14-60-38॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रदाय (pradāya) - having given; बह्वीः (bahvīḥ) - many; गाः (gāḥ) - cows; ब्राह्मणेभ्यः (brāhmaṇebhyaḥ) - to the brāhmaṇas; यदूद्वह (yadūd-vaha) - O descendant of Yadu; समहृष्यत (samahṛṣyata) - rejoiced; वार्ष्णेयी (vārṣṇeyī) - the daughter of the Vṛṣṇi (Draupadī); वैराटीम् (vairāṭīm) - to the queen of Virāṭa; च (ca) - and; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; इदम् (idam) - this;]
(Then, having given many cows to the brāhmaṇas, O descendant of Yadu, Vārṣṇeyī rejoiced and said this to the queen of Virāṭa.)
Then, having given many cows to the brāhmaṇas, Vārṣṇeyī (Draupadī) joyfully addressed these words to the queen of Virāṭa, O descendant of Yadu. (14-60-38)
वैराटि नेह सन्तापस्त्वया कार्यो यशस्विनि। भर्तारं प्रति सुश्रोणि गर्भस्थं रक्ष मे शिशुम् ॥१४-६०-३९॥
vairāṭi neha santāpastvayā kāryo yaśasvini. bhartāraṃ prati suśroṇi garbhasthaṃ rakṣa me śiśum ॥14-60-39॥
[वैराटि (vairāṭi) - O princess of Virāṭa; न (na) - not; इह (iha) - here; सन्तापः (santāpaḥ) - affliction; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; कार्यः (kāryaḥ) - should be made; यशस्विनि (yaśasvini) - O illustrious lady; भर्तारम् (bhartāram) - husband; प्रति (prati) - regarding; towards; सुश्रोणि (suśroṇi) - O slender-waisted one; गर्भस्थम् (garbhastham) - who is in the womb; रक्ष (rakṣa) - protect; मे (me) - my; शिशुम् (śiśum) - child;]
(O princess of Virāṭa, not here affliction by you should be made, O illustrious lady. Regarding your husband, O slender-waisted one, protect my child who is in the womb.)
O princess of Virāṭa, do not give way to sorrow here, illustrious lady. O slender-waisted one, for the sake of your husband, protect my unborn child. (14-60-39)
एवमुक्त्वा ततः कुन्ती विरराम महाद्युते। तामनुज्ञाप्य चैवेमां सुभद्रां समुपानयम् ॥१४-६०-४०॥
evam-uktvā tataḥ kuntī virarāma mahādyute. tām anujñāpya ca eva imāṃ subhadrāṃ samupānayam ॥14-60-40॥
