एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु पुत्रस्य वचः शूरात्मजस्तदा। विहाय शोकं धर्मात्मा ददौ श्राद्धमनुत्तमम् ॥१४-६१-१॥
etat-śrutvā tu putrasya vacaḥ śūrātmajaḥ tadā। vihāya śokaṃ dharmātmā dadau śrāddham anuttamam ॥14-61-1॥
[एतत् (śrutvā) (etat (śrutvā)) - having heard this; तु (tu) - but; पुत्रस्य (putrasya) - of the son; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; शूरात्मजः (śūrātmajaḥ) - son of Śūra; तदा (tadā) - then; विहाय (vihāya) - having abandoned; शोकं (śokaṃ) - sorrow; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous-minded; ददौ (dadau) - gave; श्राद्धम् (śrāddham) - oblation; अनुत्तमम् (anuttamam) - unexcelled;]
(Having heard this, but the words of the son, the son of Śūra then, having abandoned sorrow, the righteous-minded gave the unexcelled oblation.)
On hearing these words of his son, the son of Śūra then, abandoning sorrow, that righteous man performed the most excellent oblation. (14-61-1)
तथैव वासुदेवोऽपि स्वस्रीयस्य महात्मनः। दयितस्य पितुर्नित्यमकरोदौर्ध्वदेहिकम् ॥१४-६१-२॥
tathaiva vāsudevo'pi svasrīyasya mahātmanaḥ। dayitasya pitur nityam akarod aurdhvadehikam ॥14-61-2॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same manner; वासुदेवः (vāsudevaḥ) - Vāsudeva; अपि (api) - also; स्वस्रीयस्य (svasrīyasya) - of (his) own relative (sister's son/nephew); महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled; दयितस्य (dayitasya) - beloved; पितुः (pituḥ) - of the father; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; अकरोत् (akarot) - performed; और्ध्वदेहिकम् (aurdhvadehikam) - funeral rites;]
(In the same manner, Vāsudeva also always performed the funeral rites of the great-souled relative, the beloved father.)
Similarly, Vāsudeva also continually performed the funeral rites for his own beloved relative, the great-souled father. (14-61-2)
षष्टिं शतसहस्राणि ब्राह्मणानां महाभुजः। विधिवद्भोजयामास भोज्यं सर्वगुणान्वितम् ॥१४-६१-३॥
ṣaṣṭiṁ śata-sahasrāṇi brāhmaṇānāṁ mahā-bhujaḥ। vidhivad bhojayāmāsa bhojyaṁ sarva-guṇānvitam॥14-61-3॥
[षष्टिं (ṣaṣṭiṁ) - sixty; शतसहस्राणि (śata-sahasrāṇi) - one hundred thousand; ब्राह्मणानाम् (brāhmaṇānām) - of Brāhmaṇas; महाभुजः (mahā-bhujaḥ) - the mighty-armed; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - according to rule; भोजयामास (bhojayāmāsa) - caused to be fed; भोज्यं (bhojyam) - food; सर्वगुणान्वितम् (sarva-guṇānvitam) - endowed with all qualities;]
(Sixty hundred thousand of Brāhmaṇas, the mighty-armed, according to rule, caused to be fed food endowed with all qualities.)
The mighty-armed one caused sixty hundred thousand Brāhmaṇas to be fed with food possessing every good quality, in accordance with the prescribed rules. (14-61-3)
आच्छाद्य च महाबाहुर्धनतृष्णामपानुदत्। ब्राह्मणानां तदा कृष्णस्तदभूद्रोमहर्षणम् ॥१४-६१-४॥
ācchādya ca mahābāhur dhanatṛṣṇām apānudat। brāhmaṇānāṃ tadā kṛṣṇas tadabhūd romaharṣaṇam॥14-61-4॥
[आच्छाद्य (ācchādya) - having covered; च (ca) - and; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - the mighty-armed; धनतृष्णाम् (dhanatṛṣṇām) - greed for wealth; अपानुदत् (apānudat) - he dispelled; ब्राह्मणानाम् (brāhmaṇānām) - of the brāhmaṇas; तदा (tadā) - at that time; कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - Kṛṣṇa; तदभूत् (tad abhūt) - that became; रोमहर्षणम् (romaharṣaṇam) - hair-raising (causing hair to stand on end);]
(Having covered and mighty-armed (Kṛṣṇa) dispelled the greed for wealth. Of the brāhmaṇas at that time, Kṛṣṇa that became hair-raising.)
And having covered (their minds), the mighty-armed Kṛṣṇa dispelled the brāhmaṇas' greed for wealth at that time; that event became hair-raising (wondrous). (14-61-4)
सुवर्णं चैव गाश्चैव शयनाच्छादनं तथा। दीयमानं तदा विप्राः प्रभूतमिति चाब्रुवन् ॥१४-६१-५॥
suvarṇaṃ caiva gāś caiva śayanācchādanaṃ tathā। dīyamānaṃ tadā viprāḥ prabhūtam iti cābruvan ॥14-61-5॥
[सुवर्णम् (suvarṇam) - gold; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; गाः (gāḥ) - cows; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; शयन-आच्छादनम् (śayana-āchādanam) - bedding and coverings; तथा (tathā) - also; दीयमानम् (dīyamānam) - being given; तदा (tadā) - then; विप्राः (viprāḥ) - the Brāhmaṇas; प्रभूतम् (prabhūtam) - abundant; इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; अब्रुवन् (abravan) - said;]
(Gold and indeed cows and indeed bedding and coverings also being given then the Brāhmaṇas abundant thus and said.)
The Brāhmaṇas then said, "Gold, cows, and bedding and coverings are being given in abundance." (14-61-5)
वासुदेवोऽथ दाशार्हो बलदेवः ससात्यकिः। अभिमन्योस्तदा श्राद्धमकुर्वन्सत्यकस्तदा ॥ अतीव दुःखसन्तप्ता न शमं चोपलेभिरे ॥१४-६१-६॥
vāsudevo 'tha dāśārho baladevaḥ sasātyakiḥ. abhimanyos tadā śrāddham akurvan satyakās tadā ॥ atīva duḥkhasantaptā na śamaṃ copalebhire ॥14-61-6॥

(Vāsudeva then Daśārha Baladeva with Sātyaki. Abhimanyu then the śrāddha performed Satyaka then. Exceedingly distressed by sorrow, not peace and attained.)
Vāsudeva, the Daśārha, Baladeva, and Sātyaki, along with Satyaka, then performed the śrāddha ceremony for Abhimanyu. Being exceedingly distressed by sorrow, they did not attain peace. (14-61-6)
तथैव पाण्डवा वीरा नगरे नागसाह्वये। नोपगच्छन्ति वै शान्तिमभिमन्युविनाकृताः ॥१४-६१-७॥
tathaiva pāṇḍavā vīrā nagare nāgasāhvaye। nopagacchanti vai śāntim abhimanyu-vinākṛtāḥ॥14-61-7॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same manner; पाण्डवा (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; वीरा (vīrāḥ) - heroes; नगरे (nagare) - in the city; नागसाह्वये (nāgasāhvaye) - called Nāgasāhvaya; न (na) - not; उपगच्छन्ति (upagacchanti) - approach; वै (vai) - indeed; शान्तिम् (śāntim) - peace; अभिमन्यु (abhimanyu) - Abhimanyu; विनाकृताः (vinākṛtāḥ) - having been deprived of;]
(In the same manner, the heroic Pāṇḍavas in the city called Nāgasāhvaya indeed do not approach peace, having been deprived of Abhimanyu.)
Likewise, the heroic Pāṇḍavas in the city called Nāgasāhvaya do not seek peace, having lost Abhimanyu. (14-61-7)
सुबहूनि च राजेन्द्र दिवसानि विराटजा। नाभुङ्क्त पतिशोकार्ता तदभूत्करुणं महत् ॥ कुक्षिस्थ एव तस्यास्तु स गर्भः सम्प्रलीयत ॥१४-६१-८॥
subahūni ca rājendra divasāni virāṭajā। nābhuṅkta patiśokārtā tadabhūtkaruṇaṃ mahat॥ kukṣistha eva tasyāstu sa garbhaḥ sampralīyata॥14-61-8॥
[सुबहूनि (subahūni) - many; (neuter nom./acc. pl.) च (ca) - and; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O best of kings; दिवसानि (divasāni) - days; विराटजा (virāṭajā) - daughter of Virāṭa; न (na) - not; अभुङ्क्त (abhuṅkta) - ate; पति-शोक-आर्ता (pati-śoka-ārtā) - afflicted by grief for her husband; तत् (tat) - that; अभूत् (abhūt) - was; करुणं (karuṇam) - pitiful; महत् (mahat) - great; कुक्षिस्थः एव (kukṣisthaḥ eva) - remaining in the womb only; तस्याः तु (tasyāḥ tu) - indeed of her; सः गर्भः (saḥ garbhaḥ) - that fetus; सम्प्रलीयत (sampralīyata) - was dissolved;]
(Many also, O best of kings, days the daughter of Virāṭa did not eat, afflicted by grief for her husband—that was pitiful and great. Remaining only in the womb indeed of her, that fetus was dissolved. (14-61-8))
O best of kings, for many days the daughter of Virāṭa, afflicted with grief for her husband, did not eat; that was a truly great and pitiful thing. The fetus that remained in her womb was dissolved. (14-61-8)
आजगाम ततो व्यासो ज्ञात्वा दिव्येन चक्षुषा। आगम्य चाब्रवीद्धीमान्पृथां पृथुललोचनाम् ॥ उत्तरां च महातेजाः शोकः सन्त्यज्यतामयम् ॥१४-६१-९॥
ājagāma tato vyāso jñātvā divyena cakṣuṣā। āgamya cābravīddhīmān pṛthāṃ pṛthulalocanām॥ uttarāṃ ca mahātejāḥ śokaḥ santyajyatām ayam॥14-61-9॥
[आजगाम (ājagāma) - came; (from ā-√gam, to go to, to approach); ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; व्यासः (vyāsaḥ) - Vyāsa; (proper noun); ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - having known; having perceived; दिव्येन (divyena) - by divine; celestial; चक्षुषा (cakṣuṣā) - with eye; by vision; आगम्य (āgamya) - having come; approaching; च (ca) - and; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; spoke; धीमान् (dhīmān) - wise; intelligent; पृथाम् (pṛthām) - Pṛthā; (proper noun; another name for Kuntī); पृथुललोचनाम् (pṛthulalocanām) - large-eyed; one with broad eyes; उत्तरां (uttarāṃ) - Uttarā; (proper noun); च (ca) - and; महातेजाः (mahātejāḥ) - of great splendor; possessing great brilliance; शोकः (śokaḥ) - grief; sorrow; सन्त्यज्यताम् (santyajyatām) - let (it) be abandoned; may (it) be given up; अयम् (ayam) - this;]
(Vyāsa then came, having known by divine eye; and having approached, the wise one said to Pṛthā, the large-eyed. And (to) Uttarā also, the great-splendored (one) (said), "Let this grief be abandoned." (14-61-9))
Then Vyāsa came, having perceived with his divine vision; approaching, the wise one spoke to Pṛthā, the large-eyed, and to Uttarā as well, the one of great splendor: "Let this grief be abandoned." (14-61-9)
जनिष्यति महातेजाः पुत्रस्तव यशस्विनि। प्रभावाद्वासुदेवस्य मम व्याहरणादपि ॥ पाण्डवानामयं चान्ते पालयिष्यति मेदिनीम् ॥१४-६१-१०॥
janiṣyati mahātejāḥ putras tava yaśasvini. prabhāvād vāsudevasya mama vyāharaṇād api ॥ pāṇḍavānām ayaṃ ca ante pālayiṣyati medinīm ॥14-61-10॥
[जनिष्यति (janiṣyati) - will be born; महातेजाः (mahātejāḥ) - of great splendor; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; तव (tava) - your; यशस्विनि (yaśasvini) - O illustrious one; प्रभावात् (prabhāvāt) - through the power; वासुदेवस्य (vāsudevasya) - of Vāsudeva; मम (mama) - of me; व्याहरणात् (vyāharaṇāt) - by my utterance; अपि (api) - also; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pāṇḍavas; अयम् (ayam) - this; च (ca) - and; अन्ते (ante) - at the end; पालयिष्यति (pālayiṣyati) - will protect; मेदिनीम् (medinīm) - the earth;]
(Will be born, of great splendor, your son, O illustrious one. Through the power of Vāsudeva, and also by my utterance. Of the Pāṇḍavas, this one too, at the end, will protect the earth. (14-61-10))
O illustrious one, your son, of great splendor, will be born through the power of Vāsudeva and also by my utterance. This son of the Pāṇḍavas, too, will protect the earth at the end. (14-61-10)
धनञ्जयं च सम्प्रेक्ष्य धर्मराजस्य पश्यतः। व्यासो वाक्यमुवाचेदं हर्षयन्निव भारत ॥१४-६१-११॥
dhanañjayaṃ ca samprekṣya dharmarājasya paśyataḥ। vyāso vākyam uvācedaṃ harṣayann iva bhārata॥14-61-11॥
[धनञ्जयं (dhanañjayaṃ) - Dhanañjaya (Arjuna); च (ca) - and; सम्प्रेक्ष्य (samprekṣya) - having looked at; धर्मराजस्य (dharmarājasya) - of Dharmarāja (Yudhiṣṭhira); पश्यतः (paśyataḥ) - while looking; व्यासः (vyāsaḥ) - Vyāsa; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; इदम् (idaṃ) - this; हर्षयन् (harṣayan) - gladdening; इव (iva) - as if; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(And having looked at Dhanañjaya while Dharmarāja was looking, Vyāsa spoke this speech as if gladdening, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, Vyāsa, as if to gladden, spoke this speech, having looked at Dhanañjaya while Dharmarāja watched. (14-61-11)
पौत्रस्तव महाबाहो जनिष्यति महामनाः। पृथ्वीं सागरपर्यन्तां पालयिष्यति चैव ह ॥१४-६१-१२॥
pautras tava mahābāho janiṣyati mahāmanāḥ। pṛthvīṁ sāgara-paryantāṁ pālayiṣyati caiva ha ॥14-61-12॥
[पौत्रः (pautraḥ) - grandson; तव (tava) - your; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; जनिष्यति (janiṣyati) - will be born; महामनाः (mahāmanāḥ) - of great mind; पृथ्वीं (pṛthvīṁ) - the earth; सागरपर्यन्तां (sāgara-paryantām) - bounded by the ocean; पालयिष्यति (pālayiṣyati) - will protect; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; ह (ha) - surely;]
(Grandson your, O mighty-armed, will be born, of great mind; the earth bounded by the ocean he will indeed protect surely.)
O mighty-armed, your grandson of great mind will be born, and he will surely protect the earth bounded by the ocean. (14-61-12)
तस्माच्छोकं कुरुश्रेष्ठ जहि त्वमरिकर्शन। विचार्यमत्र न हि ते सत्यमेतद्भविष्यति ॥१४-६१-१३॥
tasmācchokaṃ kuruśreṣṭha jahi tvamarikarśana. vicāryamatra na hi te satyametadbhaviṣyati ॥14-61-13॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; शोकम् (śokam) - grief; कुरुश्रेष्ठ (kuruśreṣṭha) - O best of the Kurus; जहि (jahi) - abandon; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अरि-कर्तशन (ari-karśana) - O tormentor of foes; विचार्यम् (vicāryam) - to be considered; अत्र (atra) - here; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; ते (te) - for you; सत्यं (satyam) - the truth; एतत् (etat) - this; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will happen;]
(Therefore, grief, O best of the Kurus, abandon, you, O tormentor of foes. To be considered here, not indeed for you the truth, this will happen.)
Therefore, O best of the Kurus, abandon your grief, O slayer of foes. On consideration, this will not be the truth for you; it will not come to pass. (14-61-13)
यच्चापि वृष्णिवीरेण कृष्णेन कुरुनन्दन। पुरोक्तं तत्तथा भावि मा तेऽत्रास्तु विचारणा ॥१४-६१-१४॥
yaccāpi vṛṣṇivīreṇa kṛṣṇena kurunandana। puroktaṃ tattathā bhāvi mā te'trāstu vicāraṇā ॥14-61-14॥
[यत् (yat) - what; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; वृष्णिवीरेण (vṛṣṇivīreṇa) - by the hero of the Vṛṣṇis; कृष्णेन (kṛṣṇena) - by Kṛṣṇa; कुरुनन्दन (kurunandana) - O delight of the Kurus; पुरा (purā) - formerly; उक्तं (uktaṃ) - spoken; तत् (tat) - that; तथा (tathā) - thus; भावि (bhāvi) - is to be; मा (mā) - do not; ते (te) - by you; अत्र (atra) - in this; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; विचारणा (vicāraṇā) - consideration;]
(And what also by the hero of the Vṛṣṇis, by Kṛṣṇa, O delight of the Kurus, was formerly spoken, that thus is to be; do not let consideration be by you in this.)
And whatever was spoken before by the hero of the Vṛṣṇis, by Kṛṣṇa, O delight of the Kurus, that will certainly come to pass; do not concern yourself about it. (14-61-14)
विबुधानां गतो लोकानक्षयानात्मनिर्जितान्। न स शोच्यस्त्वया तात न चान्यैः कुरुभिस्तथा ॥१४-६१-१५॥
vibudhānāṃ gato lokānakṣayān ātmanirjitān। na sa śocyastvayā tāta na cānyaiḥ kurubhistathā ॥14-61-15॥
[विबुधानाम् (vibudhānām) - of the wise ones; (of the gods); गतः (gataḥ) - gone; (he has reached;) लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; (regions;) अक्षयान् (akṣayān) - imperishable; (undecaying;) आत्म-निर्जितान् (ātma-nirjitān) - conquered by one's self; (won by self-control;) न (na) - not; सः (saḥ) - he; शोच्यः (śocyaḥ) - to be grieved; (someone who should be mourned;) त्वया (tvayā) - by you; तात (tāta) - O dear; (O father;) न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अन्यैः (anyaiḥ) - by others; कुरुभिः (kurubhiḥ) - by Kurus; (by members of the Kuru clan;) तथा (tathā) - in that way; (thus;);]
(He has gone to the worlds of the wise ones, imperishable, won by self-mastery. He is not to be grieved for by you, O dear, nor in that way by others among the Kurus.)
He has attained the imperishable worlds of the wise, won by their own self-mastery; he should not be mourned by you, O dear one, nor in that way by the other Kurus. (14-61-15)
एवं पितामहेनोक्तो धर्मात्मा स धनञ्जयः। त्यक्त्वा शोकं महाराज हृष्टरूपोऽभवत्तदा ॥१४-६१-१६॥
evaṃ pitāmahena uktaḥ dharmātmā sa dhanañjayaḥ। tyaktvā śokaṃ mahārāja hṛṣṭarūpaḥ abhavat tadā ॥14-61-16॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; पितामहेन (pitāmahena) - by the grandsire; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous-souled; स (sa) - he; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhananjaya (Arjuna); त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - having abandoned; शोकं (śokaṃ) - sorrow; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; हृष्टरूपः (hṛṣṭarūpaḥ) - glad-faced; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Thus, by the grandsire addressed, the righteous-souled he, Dhananjaya, having abandoned sorrow, O great king, glad-faced became then.)
Thus, O great king, the righteous Dhananjaya, addressed by the grandsire, cast off his sorrow and became glad at that time. (14-61-16)
पितापि तव धर्मज्ञ गर्भे तस्मिन्महामते। अवर्धत यथाकालं शुक्लपक्षे यथा शशी ॥१४-६१-१७॥
pitāpi tava dharmajña garbhe tasmin mahāmate। avardhata yathākālaṃ śuklapakṣe yathā śaśī ॥14-61-17॥
[पिता (pitā) - father; अपि (api) - also; तव (tava) - your; धर्मज्ञ (dharmajña) - knower of dharma; गर्भे (garbhe) - in the womb; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; महामते (mahāmate) - O great-minded one; अवर्धत (avardhata) - grew; यथा (yathā) - just as; काले (kālaṃ) - in time; शुक्लपक्षे (śuklapakṣe) - in the bright fortnight; यथा (yathā) - as; शशी (śaśī) - moon;]
(Father also your knower of dharma in that womb O great-minded one grew just as in time in the bright fortnight as the moon.)
Your father, O knower of dharma, also grew in that womb, O great-minded one, just as the moon grows in the bright fortnight, in due time. (14-61-17)
ततः सञ्चोदयामास व्यासो धर्मात्मजं नृपम्। अश्वमेधं प्रति तदा ततः सोऽन्तर्हितोऽभवत् ॥१४-६१-१८॥
tataḥ sañcodayāmāsa vyāso dharmātmajaṃ nṛpam। aśvamedhaṃ prati tadā tataḥ so'ntarhito'bhavat॥14-61-18॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सञ्चोदयामास (sañcodayāmāsa) - incited; urged; व्यासः (vyāsaḥ) - Vyāsa; धर्मात्मजम् (dharmātmajam) - son of Dharma (Yudhiṣṭhira); नृपम् (nṛpam) - king; अश्वमेधम् (aśvamedham) - horse sacrifice; प्रति (prati) - towards; तदा (tadā) - then; ततः (tataḥ) - thereupon; सः (saḥ) - he; अन्तर्हितः (antarhitaḥ) - disappeared; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]
(Then Vyāsa incited the king, son of Dharma, towards the horse sacrifice. Then thereupon he disappeared.)
Then Vyāsa urged King Yudhiṣṭhira, son of Dharma, to perform the horse sacrifice. Thereupon, he disappeared. (14-61-18)
धर्मराजोऽपि मेधावी श्रुत्वा व्यासस्य तद्वचः। वित्तोपनयने तात चकार गमने मतिम् ॥१४-६१-१९॥
dharmarājo'pi medhāvī śrutvā vyāsasya tadvacaḥ। vittopananayane tāta cakāra gamane matim ॥14-61-19॥
[धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - the king of dharma; अपि (api) - also; मेधावी (medhāvī) - wise one; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; व्यासस्य (vyāsasya) - of Vyāsa; तत् (tat) - that; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; वित्तोपनयने (vittopananayane) - for the bringing of wealth; तात (tāta) - O father; चकार (cakāra) - he made; गमने (gamane) - for going; मतिम् (matim) - resolve;]
(The king of dharma also, the wise one, having heard that speech of Vyāsa, for the bringing of wealth, O father, he made resolve for going.)
The wise king Yudhishthira, upon hearing Vyāsa’s words, O father, resolved to depart in search of wealth. (14-61-19)
