brāhmaṇā ūcuḥ॥
The Brāhmaṇas said.
kriyatām upahāraḥ adya tryambakasya mahātmanaḥ। kṛtvā upahāram nṛpate tataḥ svārthe yatāmahe ॥14-64-1॥
Let an offering be prepared today for the great-souled Tryambaka. Having made the offering, O king, then let us strive for our own purpose. (14-64-1)
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
Vaiśampāyana said.
śrutvā tu vacanaṃ teṣāṃ brāhmaṇānāṃ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। girīśasya yathānyāyam-upahāram-upāharat ॥14-64-2॥
But having heard the words of those brāhmaṇas, Yudhiṣṭhira made an offering to Girīśa (Śiva) in the proper manner. (14-64-2)
ājyena tarpayitvāgniṁ vidhivatsaṁskṛtena ha। mantrasiddhaṁ caruṁ kṛtvā purodhāḥ prayayau tadā ॥14-64-3॥
Having satisfied Agni with purified clarified butter according to the proper ritual, and having prepared the oblation sanctified by mantra, the priest then departed. (14-64-3)
sa gṛhītvā sumanaso mantrapūtā janādhipa। modakaiḥ pāyasena atha māṁsaiḥ ca upāharat balim ॥14-64-4॥
The lord of the people, having taken flowers purified by mantra, offered the offering with sweet balls, milk rice, and meats. (14-64-4)
sumanobhiś ca citrābhir lājair uccāvacair api। sarvaṃ sviṣṭakṛtaṃ kṛtvā vidhivad vedapāragaḥ॥ kiṅkarāṇāṃ tataḥ paścāc cakāra balim uttamam॥14-64-5॥
With flowers and various kinds of roasted grains, after duly performing all the sviṣṭakṛt rites according to the rules, the one learned in the Vedas then rendered an excellent offering for the attendants. (14-64-5)
yakṣendrāya kuberāya maṇibhadrāya caiva ha। tathānyeṣāṁ ca yakṣāṇāṁ bhūtādhipatayaśca ye ॥14-64-6॥
To the lord of the yakṣas, Kubera, Maṇibhadra, and indeed also, likewise to the other yakṣas and all those who are lords of beings. (14-64-6)
kṛsareṇa samāṃsena nivāpais tilasaṃyutaiḥ। śuśubhe sthānam atyarthaṃ devadevasya pārthiva ॥14-64-7॥
O king, the place of the god of gods shone exceedingly with gruel, flesh, and offerings of parched grain mixed with sesame seeds. (14-64-7)
kṛtvā tu pūjāṃ rudrasya gaṇānāṃ caiva sarvaśaḥ। yayau vyāsaṃ puraskṛtya nṛpo ratnanidhiṃ prati॥14-64-8॥
After duly performing the worship of Rudra and his attendants in every way, the king, with Vyāsa leading, proceeded to the treasury of gems. (14-64-8)
pūjayitvā dhanādhyakṣaṃ praṇipatyābhivādya ca। sumanobhir vicitrābhir apūpaiḥ kṛsareṇa ca॥14-64-9॥
Having worshipped the treasurer, bowed down and saluted him with various flowers, cakes, and kr̥sara (a rice dish). (14-64-9)
śaṅkhādīṁś ca nidhīn sarvān nidhipālāṁś ca sarvaśaḥ। arcayitvā dvijāgryān sa svasti vācya ca vīryavān ॥14-64-10॥
Having worshipped the conches, all the treasures, and all the guardians of the treasures in every way, and having shown reverence to the foremost Brahmins, he—the mighty one—may be wished well. (14-64-10)
teṣāṃ puṇyāhaghoṣeṇa tejasā samavasthitaḥ। prītimāns kuruśreṣṭhaḥ khānayāmāsa taṃ nidhim ॥14-64-11॥
While the proclamation of auspicious rites resounded among them and with great brilliance, the joyful chief of the Kurus firmly caused that treasure to be unearthed. (14-64-11)
tataḥ pātryaḥ sakarakāḥ sāśmantakama-noramāḥ. bhṛṅgārāṇi kaṭāhāni kalaśān vardhamānakān ॥14-64-12॥
Then there were bowls with ladles, delightful with aśmantaka wood, as well as fire-pans, large flat dishes, waterpots, and measuring pots. (14-64-12)
bahūni ca vicitrāṇi bhājanāni sahasraśaḥ। uddhārayāmāsa tadā dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥14-64-13॥
Then King Yudhishthira, the Dharma-rāja, caused many and various vessels—by the thousands—to be brought up. (14-64-13)
teṣāṁ lakṣaṇam apy āsīn mahān karapuṭas tathā। trilaakṣaṁ bhājanaṁ rājaṁs tulārdham abhavan nṛpa ॥14-64-14॥
O king, among them the mark also was that the great handful similarly (prevailed). Three hundred thousand vessels became half a balance, O king. (14-64-14)
vāhanaṃ pāṇḍuputrasya tatrāsīttu viśāṃ pate. ṣaṣṭiruṣṭrasahasrāṇi śatāni dviguṇā hayāḥ ॥14-64-15॥
O lord of men, there was the vehicle of the son of Pāṇḍu there—but there were sixty thousand camels, and horses in double that number. (14-64-15)
vāraṇāś ca mahārāja sahasraśatasammitāḥ। śakaṭāni rathāś caiva tāvadeva kareṇavaḥ॥ kharāṇāṃ puruṣāṇāṃ ca parisaṅkhyā na vidyate॥14-64-16॥
There were elephants, O great king, in numbers equal to hundreds of thousands; there were also as many carts, chariots, and elephants. But of the donkeys and men, their reckoning does not exist. (14-64-16)
etadvittaṃ tadabhavadyaduddadhre yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। ṣoḍaśāṣṭau caturviṃśatsahasraṃ bhāralakṣaṇam ॥14-64-17॥
This was the wealth which Yudhishthira raised, measuring twenty-four thousand bhāras in weight. (14-64-17)
eteṣv ādhāya tad dravyaṃ punar abhyarcya pāṇḍavaḥ। mahādevaṃ prati yayau puraṃ nāgāhvayaṃ prati॥14-64-18॥
After placing that object in these locations and having worshipped again, the Pāṇḍava went towards Maheśvara and to the city named Nāgāhvaya. (14-64-18)
dvaipāyanābhyanujñātaḥ puraskṛtya purohitam। goyute goyute caiva nyavasatpuruṣarṣabhaḥ ॥14-64-19॥
Having obtained permission from Dvaipāyana and placing the priest at the forefront, the best among men took up his residence each time at a distance of a cow's range. (14-64-19)
sā purābhimukhī rājan jagāma mahatī camūḥ। kṛcchrād draviṇa-bhāra-ārtā harṣayantī kurūdvahān ॥14-64-20॥
O king, that great army, facing east, advanced with difficulty, burdened by its wealth, delighting the leaders of the Kurus. (14-64-20)
