vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
Vaiśampāyana said.
evamuktastu rājendra keśihā duḥkhamūrcchitaḥ। tatheti vyājahāroccairhlādayanniva taṃ janam॥14-67-1॥
But thus addressed, O king, the slayer of Keśi, who was faint with sorrow, said “So be it” aloud, as if delighting that assembly. (14-67-1)
vākyena tena hi tadā taṃ janaṃ puruṣarṣabhaḥ। hlādayāmāsa sa vibhurgharmārtaṃ salilairiva ॥14-67-2॥
With that statement, the foremost of men indeed then gladdened that person; just as one afflicted by heat is refreshed by waters. (14-67-2)
tataḥ sa prāviśattūrṇaṃ janmaveśma pitustava। arcitaṃ puruṣavyāghra sitairmālyairyathāvidhi ॥14-67-3॥
Then he quickly entered your father's birth-house, O tiger among men, which had been worshipped with white garlands according to the prescribed method. (14-67-3)
apāṃ kumbhaiḥ supūrṇaiś ca vinyastaiḥ sarvatodiśam। ghṛtena tindukālātaiḥ sarṣapaiś ca mahābhuja ॥14-67-4॥
O mighty-armed one, jars of water well filled and placed all around, with ghee, tinduka leaves and shoots, and mustard seeds.
śastraiś ca vimalair nyastaiḥ pāvakaiś ca samantataḥ। vṛddhābhiś cābhirāmābhiḥ paricārārtham acyutaḥ ॥14-67-5॥
Acyuta (Krishna) was attended by spotless weapons laid down, sacred fires all around, and elderly and charming women devoted to his service. (14-67-5)
dakṣaiś ca parito vīra bhiṣagbhiḥ kuśalaiḥ tathā। dadarśa ca sa tejasvī rakṣoghnāni api sarvaśaḥ॥ dravyāṇi sthāpitāni sma vidhivat kuśalaiḥ janaiḥ॥14-67-6॥
O hero, on all sides, he saw, by skillful and expert physicians, means for destroying demons in every way, and substances duly arranged by skillful people. (14-67-6)
tathā-yuktaṃ ca tad-dṛṣṭvā janma-veśma pituḥ tava। hṛṣṭaḥ abhavat dhṛṣīkeśaḥ sādhu sādhu iti ca abravīt ॥14-67-7॥
Having thus seen that appropriate thing and the birthplace of your father, Dhṛṣīkeśa became delighted and said, "Excellent! Excellent!" (14-67-7)
tathā bruvati vārṣṇeye prahṛṣṭavadane tadā. draupadī tvaritā gatvā vairāṭīṃ vākyam abravīt ॥14-67-8॥
Thus, while Vārṣṇeya (Krishna) was speaking with a delighted face, Draupadī quickly went to the queen of Virāṭa and spoke words to her. (14-67-8)
ayam āyāti te bhadre śvaśuro madhusūdanaḥ. purāṇarṣir acintyātmā samīpam aparājitaḥ ॥14-67-9॥
O auspicious one, Madhusūdana, your father-in-law—an ancient seer, whose nature is inconceivable and who is unconquered—has come near you. (14-67-9)
sāpi bāṣpakalāṁ vācaṁ nigṛhyāśrūṇi caiva ha। susaṁvītābhavaddevī devavatkṛṣṇamīkṣatī ॥14-67-10॥
She too, holding back her tearful voice and her tears, became gracefully veiled, and gazed at Kṛṣṇa like a goddess. (14-67-10)
sā tathā dūyamānena hṛdayena tapasvinī। dṛṣṭvā govindam āyāntam kṛpaṇam paryadevayat ॥14-67-11॥
In this manner, the ascetic woman, her heart suffering, saw the pitiable Govinda coming and lamented. (14-67-11)
puṇḍarīkākṣa paśyasva bālāviha vinākṛtau। abhimanyuṃ ca māṃ caiva hatau tulyaṃ janārdana॥14-67-12॥
O lotus-eyed Janardana, see here your child Abhimanyu and me as well, both killed and lying in the same separated state. (14-67-12)
vārṣṇeya madhu-han-vīra śirasā tvāṃ prasādaye। droṇa-putra-astra-nirdagdhaṃ jīvaya enaṃ mama ātmajam ॥14-67-13॥
O descendant of Vṛṣṇi, hero and slayer of Madhu, I bow my head and beseech you: revive my son, who has been burned by the weapon of Droṇa's son. (14-67-13)
yadi sma dharmarājñā vā bhīmasenena vā punaḥ। tvayā vā puṇḍarīkākṣa vākyam uktam idaṃ bhavet॥14-67-14॥
If indeed this word were spoken by Dharmarāja, by Bhīmasena, again by you, or by you, O lotus-eyed one. (14-67-14)
ajānatīm iṣīkā iyaṁ janitrīṁ hantv iti prabho। aham eva vinaṣṭā syāṁ na idam evaṁ gataṁ bhavet॥14-67-15॥
O lord, do not let this mother, not knowing, be slain by an arrow. Rather, let me alone be destroyed; let not this misfortune come to her. (14-67-15)
garbhasthasyāsya bālasya brahmāstreṇa nipātanam। kṛtvā nṛśaṁsaṁ durbuddhirdrauṇiḥ kiṁ phalamaśnute ॥14-67-16॥
Having killed this boy still in the womb with the Brahma-weapon—having committed such cruelty—what fruit does the wicked-minded son of Droṇa gain? (14-67-16)
sā tvā prasādya śirasā yāce śatrunibarhaṇa। prāṇāṁstyakṣyāmi govinda nāyaṁ sañjīvate yadi ॥14-67-17॥
She bows her head and entreats you, O Govinda, destroyer of enemies. If he does not come back to life, I shall give up my own life. (14-67-17)
asmin hi bahavaḥ sādho ye mamāsan manorathāḥ। te droṇaputreṇa hatāḥ kiṃ nu jīvāmi keśava ॥14-67-18॥
O Keśava, in this situation, O noble one, many of my desires have been destroyed by the son of Droṇa. Why indeed do I live?
āsīn mama matiḥ kṛṣṇa pūrṇotsaṅgā janārdana। abhivādayiṣye diṣṭy eti tad idaṃ vitathīkṛtam ॥14-67-19॥
O Kṛṣṇa Janārdana, my thought was always filled with the hope, 'Fortunately, I shall salute You with an embrace'; but that hope has now been made false. (14-67-19)
capalākṣasya dāyāde mṛte'sminpuruṣarṣabha। viphālā me kṛtāḥ kṛṣṇa hṛdi sarve manorathāḥ ॥14-67-20॥
O Kṛṣṇa, since this heir of Capalākṣa is dead, O best of men, all my desires cherished in my heart have become fruitless. (14-67-20)
capalākṣaḥ kilātīva priyaḥ te madhusūdana। sutaṃ paśyasva tasya imaṃ brahmāstreṇa nipātitam ॥14-67-21॥
O Madhusūdana, the one with restless eyes, who was indeed extremely dear to you—see his son here, struck down by the Brahmāstra. (14-67-21)
kṛtaghno'yaṃ nṛśaṃso'yaṃ yathāsya janakastathā | yaḥ pāṇḍavīṃ śriyaṃ tyaktvā gato'dya yamasādanam ॥14-67-22॥
This man is ungrateful, this man is cruel; just like his father, so is he: he who, forsaking the Pāṇḍavas' prosperity, has today gone to the abode of Yama. (14-67-22)
mayā caitatpratijñātaṃ raṇamūrdhani keśava. abhimanyau hate vīra tvāmeṣyāmyacirāditi ॥14-67-23॥
O Keśava, I have also vowed this on the battlefield: 'O hero, when Abhimanyu is slain, I will come to you soon.' (14-67-23)
tac ca nākaravaṁ kṛṣṇa nṛśaṁsā jīvitapriyā। idānīm āgatāṁ tatra kiṁ nu vakṣyati phālguṇiḥ॥14-67-24॥
But that I did not do, Kṛṣṇa — being cruel and attached to life. Now that I have come there, what indeed will Phālguṇi (Arjuna) say? (14-67-24)
