ब्रह्मास्त्रं तु यदा राजन्कृष्णेन प्रतिसंहृतम्। तदा तद्वेश्म ते पित्रा तेजसाभिविदीपितम् ॥१४-६९-१॥
brahmāstraṃ tu yadā rājan kṛṣṇena pratisaṃhṛtam। tadā tad veśma te pitrā tejasābhividīpitam ॥14-69-1॥
[ब्रह्मास्त्रं (brahmāstram) - the Brahmāstra; तु (tu) - but; यदा (yadā) - when; राजन् (rājan) - O king; कृष्णेन (kṛṣṇena) - by Kṛṣṇa; प्रतिसंहृतम् (pratisaṃhṛtam) - was withdrawn; तदा (tadā) - then; तद् (tad) - that; वेश्म (veśma) - house; ते (te) - your; पित्रा (pitrā) - by (your) father; तेजसा (tejasā) - by splendor; अभिविदीपितम् (abhividīpitam) - was illumined;]
(The Brahmāstra but when, O king, by Kṛṣṇa was withdrawn, then that house, your, by (your) father, by splendor, was illumined.)
But when the Brahmāstra was withdrawn by Kṛṣṇa, O king, then your house was illumined by the splendor of your father. (14-69-1)
ततो रक्षांसि सर्वाणि नेशुस्त्यक्त्वा गृहं तु तत्। अन्तरिक्षे च वागासीत्साधु केशव साध्विति ॥१४-६९-२॥
tato rakṣāṁsi sarvāṇi neśus tyaktvā gṛhaṁ tu tat। antarikṣe ca vāg āsīt sādhu keśava sādhv iti ॥14-69-2॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; रक्षांसि (rakṣāṁsi) - the demons; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; नेशुः (neśuḥ) - departed; त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - having abandoned; गृहम् (gṛham) - dwelling; तु (tu) - but; तत् (tat) - that; अन्तरिक्षे (antarikṣe) - in the sky; च (ca) - and; वाक् (vāk) - a voice; आसीत् (āsīt) - arose; साधु (sādhu) - well done; केशव (keśava) - O Keśava; साधु (sādhu) - well done; इति (iti) - thus;]
(Then the demons all departed, having abandoned that dwelling, but in the sky also a voice arose, "Well done, O Keśava, well done," thus.)
Then all the demons left, abandoning that house, but in the sky a voice was heard: "Well done, O Keśava, well done." (14-69-2)
तदस्त्रं ज्वलितं चापि पितामहमगात्तदा। ततः प्राणान्पुनर्लेभे पिता तव जनेश्वर ॥ व्यचेष्टत च बालोऽसौ यथोत्साहं यथाबलम् ॥१४-६९-३॥
tadastraṃ jvalitaṃ cāpi pitāmahamagāttadā। tataḥ prāṇānpunarlebhe pitā tava janeśvara ॥ vyaceṣṭata ca bālo'sau yathotsāhaṃ yathābalam ॥14-69-3॥
[तत् (tat) - that; अस्त्रं (astraṃ) - missile; ज्वलितं (jvalitaṃ) - blazing; चापि (cāpi) - and also; पितामहम् (pitāmaham) - to Brahmā (the grandsire); अगात् (agāt) - went; तदा (tadā) - then; ततः (tataḥ) - thereupon; प्राणान् (prāṇān) - life-breaths; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; लेभे (lebhe) - obtained; पिता (pitā) - father; तव (tava) - your; जनेश्वर (janeśvara) - O lord of men; व्यचेष्टत (vyaceṣṭata) - moved about; च (ca) - and; बालः (bālaḥ) - boy; असौ (asau) - that; यथोत्साहं (yathotsāham) - according to zeal; यथाबलम् (yathābalam) - according to strength;]
(That blazing missile also then went to (was absorbed into) the Grandsire (Brahmā). Thereupon, life-breaths again obtained your father, O lord of men. The boy moved about, and that (boy), according to zeal, according to strength.)
That blazing missile was then taken back by the Grandsire. Thereupon, your father regained his life, O lord of men. The boy moved about as much as his zeal and strength allowed. (14-69-3)
बभूवुर्मुदिता राजंस्ततस्ता भरतस्त्रियः। ब्राह्मणान्वाचयामासुर्गोविन्दस्य च शासनात् ॥१४-६९-४॥
babhūvur muditā rājan tatas tā bharata-striyaḥ. brāhmaṇān vācayāmāsur govindasya ca śāsanāt ॥14-69-4॥
[बभूवुः (babhūvuḥ) - they became; मुदिताः (muditāḥ) - joyful; राजन् (rājan) - O king; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; ताः (tāḥ) - those; भरतस्त्रियः (bharata-striyaḥ) - women of Bharata (Bharata's women); ब्राह्मणान् (brāhmaṇān) - Brahmins; वाचयामासुः (vācayāmāsuḥ) - made to recite/read; गोविन्दस्य (govindasya) - of Govinda; च (ca) - and; शासनात् (śāsanāt) - by the command;]
(They became joyful, O king, thereafter those Bharata women made the Brahmins recite by the command of Govinda and.)
O king, then those women of the Bharata family became joyful and, by the command of Govinda, made the Brahmins recite. (14-69-4)
ततस्ता मुदिताः सर्वाः प्रशशंसुर्जनार्दनम्। स्त्रियो भरतसिंहानां नावं लब्ध्वेव पारगाः ॥१४-६९-५॥
tatastā muditāḥ sarvāḥ praśaśaṃsur janārdanam। striyo bharata-siṃhānāṃ nāvaṃ labdhveva pāragāḥ॥14-69-5॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ता (tā) - those; मुदिताः (muditāḥ) - gladdened; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; प्रशशंसुः (praśaśaṃsuḥ) - praised; जनार्दनम् (janārdanam) - Janārdana; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; भरतसिंहानाम् (bharata-siṃhānām) - of the lions of the Bharata (i.e., of the heroes of the Bharata clan); नावम् (nāvam) - boat; लब्ध्वा (labdhvā) - having obtained; इव (iva) - as if; पारगाः (pāragāḥ) - crossers, those who cross over;]
(Then those gladdened all praised Janārdana. The women of the lions of the Bharata, as if having obtained a boat, were crossers.)
Then all those joyful women praised Janārdana. The women of the warriors of the Bharata lineage, as if having found a boat, were able to cross over. (14-69-5)
कुन्ती द्रुपदपुत्री च सुभद्रा चोत्तरा तथा। स्त्रियश्चान्या नृसिंहानां बभूवुर्हृष्टमानसाः ॥१४-६९-६॥
kuntī drupadaputrī ca subhadrā ca uttarā tathā| striyaś ca anyā nṛsiṃhānāṃ babhūvuḥ hṛṣṭamānasāḥ ॥14-69-6॥
[कुन्ती (kuntī) - Kuntī; द्रुपदपुत्री (drupadaputrī) - daughter of Drupada; च (ca) - and; सुभद्रा (subhadrā) - Subhadrā; च (ca) - and; उत्तर (uttarā) - Uttarā; तथा (tathā) - also; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; च (ca) - and; अन्या (anyā) - other; नृसिंहानाम् (nṛsiṃhānām) - of lion-men; बभूवुः (babhūvuḥ) - became; हृष्टमानसाः (hṛṣṭamānasāḥ) - joyful in mind;]
(Kuntī, daughter of Drupada, and Subhadrā, and also Uttarā, and other women of the lion-men became joyful in mind.)
Kuntī, Draupadī, Subhadrā, and Uttarā, along with the other wives of the heroes, became glad at heart. (14-69-6)
तत्र मल्ला नटा झल्ला ग्रन्थिकाः सौखशायिकाः। सूतमागधसङ्घाश्चाप्यस्तुवन्वै जनार्दनम् ॥ कुरुवंशस्तवाख्याभिराशीर्भिर्भरतर्षभ ॥१४-६९-७॥
tatra mallā naṭā jhallā granthikāḥ saukhaśāyikāḥ. sūtamāgadhasaṅghāścāpyastuvan vai janārdanam ॥ kuruvaṃśastavākhyābhir āśīrbhir bharatarṣabha ॥14-69-7॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; मल्लाः (mallāḥ) - wrestlers; नटाः (naṭāḥ) - actors; झल्लाः (jhallāḥ) - cymbal players; ग्रन्थिकाः (granthikāḥ) - reciters of narrative; सौखशायिकाः (saukhaśāyikāḥ) - songsters of pleasures; सूतमागधसङ्घाः (sūtamāgadhasaṅghāḥ) - groups of Sūtas and Māgadhas (bards); च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अस्तुवन् (astuvan) - praised; वै (vai) - indeed; जनार्दनम् (janārdanam) - Janārdana; कुरुवंश (kuravaṃśa) - Kuruvamsha (Kuru lineage); स्तवाख्याभिः (stavākhyābhiḥ) - by praises; आशीर्भिः (āśīrbhiḥ) - by blessings; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas;]
(There wrestlers, actors, cymbal players, reciters of narrative, singers of pleasures, groups of Sūtas and Māgadhas also indeed praised Janārdana. Kuruvamsha with praises, with blessings, O best of the Bharatas.)
There, wrestlers, actors, cymbal players, storytellers, singers, and groups of Sūtas and Māgadhas also indeed praised Janārdana with hymns of praise and blessings, O best of the Bharatas of the Kuru line. (14-69-7)
उत्थाय तु यथाकालमुत्तरा यदुनन्दनम्। अभ्यवादयत प्रीता सह पुत्रेण भारत ॥ ततस्तस्यै ददौ प्रीतो बहुरत्नं विशेषतः ॥१४-६९-८॥
utthāya tu yathākālam uttarā yadunandanam। abhyavādayata prītā saha putreṇa bhārata॥ tataḥ tasyai dadau prītaḥ bahuratnaṃ viśeṣataḥ॥14-69-8॥
[उत्थाय (utthāya) - having risen; तु (tu) - but; यथाकालम् (yathākālam) - at the proper time; उत्तरा (uttarā) - Uttarā; यदुनन्दनम् (yadunandanam) - son of Yadu; अभ्यवादयत (abhyavādayata) - greeted respectfully; प्रीता (prītā) - pleased; सह (saha) - with; पुत्रेण (putreṇa) - with her son; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; ततः (tataḥ) - then; तस्यै (tasyai) - to her; ददौ (dadau) - gave; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; बहुरत्नम् (bahuratnam) - many jewels; विशेषतः (viśeṣataḥ) - especially;]
(Having risen but at the proper time, Uttarā, pleased, with her son, O Bhārata, greeted respectfully the son of Yadu. Then to her, pleased, he gave many jewels especially.)
At the proper time, Uttarā, along with her son, joyfully rose and greeted the son of Yadu, O Bhārata. Then, being pleased, he especially gave her many jewels. (14-69-8)
तथान्ये वृष्णिशार्दूला नाम चास्याकरोत्प्रभुः। पितुस्तव महाराज सत्यसन्धो जनार्दनः ॥१४-६९-९॥
tathā anye vṛṣṇiśārdūla nāma ca asya akarot prabhuḥ। pitus tava mahārāja satyasaṁdho janārdanaḥ॥14-69-9॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; अन्ये (anye) - others; वृष्णिशार्दूल (vṛṣṇiśārdūla) - tiger among the Vṛṣṇis; नाम (nāma) - by name; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - of him; अकरोत् (akarot) - he did; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord; पितुः (pituḥ) - of the father; तव (tava) - your; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; सत्यसन्धः (satyasaṁdhaḥ) - truthful; जनार्दनः (janārdanaḥ) - Janārdana;]
(Thus, others, the tiger among the Vṛṣṇis, by name, and, of him, did, the lord; of your father, O great king, truthful, Janārdana.)
Thus, O great king, Janārdana, the truthful lord, the tiger among the Vṛṣṇis, did (this) also for your father. (14-69-9)
परिक्षीणे कुले यस्माज्जातोऽयमभिमन्युजः। परिक्षिदिति नामास्य भवत्वित्यब्रवीत्तदा ॥१४-६९-१०॥
parikṣīṇe kule yasmājjāto' yam abhimanyujaḥ. parikṣid iti nāmāsya bhavatv ity abravīt tadā ॥14-69-10॥
[परिक्षीणे (parikṣīṇe) - exhausted; diminished; कुले (kule) - in lineage; in the family; यस्मात् (yasmāt) - because of which; since; जातः (jātaḥ) - born; अयम् (ayam) - this; अभिमन्युजः (abhimanyujaḥ) - son of Abhimanyu; परिक्षित् (parikṣit) - Parikṣit; one who has been tested; इति (iti) - thus; नाम (nāma) - name; अस्य (asya) - of him; his; भवतु (bhavatu) - let it be; इति (iti) - thus; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; तदा (tadā) - then; at that time;]
(Because the lineage was exhausted, this son of Abhimanyu was born; 'Parikṣit' thus as his name let it be, thus (he) said then.)
Because the lineage had dwindled, this son of Abhimanyu was born; therefore, let his name be 'Parikṣit,' thus he said at that time. (14-69-10)
सोऽवर्धत यथाकालं पिता तव नराधिप। मनःप्रह्लादनश्चासीत्सर्वलोकस्य भारत ॥१४-६९-११॥
so'vardhata yathākālaṃ pitā tava narādhipa। manaḥprahlādanaś cāsīt sarvalokasya bhārata ॥14-69-11॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अवर्धत (avardhata) - grew; increased; यथा (yathā) - as; according to; कालम् (kālam) - time; पिता (pitā) - father; तव (tava) - your; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king; lord of men; मनःप्रह्लादनः (manaḥprahlādanaḥ) - delighting the mind; च (ca) - and; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; सर्वलोकस्य (sarvalokasya) - of all the worlds; of all people; भारत (bhārata) - O descendant of Bharata;]
(He grew according to time, your father, O king; and (he) was the delight of the mind of all the worlds, O Bhārata.)
O king, your father grew with time, and became the pleasure of all the people's hearts, O Bhārata. (14-69-11)
मासजातस्तु ते वीर पिता भवति भारत। अथाजग्मुः सुबहुलं रत्नमादाय पाण्डवाः ॥१४-६९-१२॥
māsajātas tu te vīra pitā bhavati bhārata। athājagmuḥ subahulaṃ ratnam ādāya pāṇḍavāḥ॥14-69-12॥
[मासजातः (māsajātaḥ) - one born of the month; तु (tu) - but; ते (te) - your; वीर (vīra) - hero; पिता (pitā) - father; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata (descendant of Bharata); अथ (atha) - then; आजग्मुः (ājagmuḥ) - they went; सुबहुलं (subahulam) - abundant; रत्नम् (ratnam) - gems; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas;]
(But the one born of the month, your hero father becomes, O Bhārata. Then, the Pāṇḍavas, having taken abundant gems, went.)
But your heroic father, born of the month, O Bhārata, becomes (so). Then the Pāṇḍavas, having taken abundant gems, departed. (14-69-12)
तान्समीपगताञ्श्रुत्वा निर्ययुर्वृष्णिपुङ्गवाः। अलञ्चक्रुश्च माल्यौघैः पुरुषा नागसाह्वयम् ॥१४-६९-१३॥
tānsamīpagatāñśrutvā niryayurvṛṣṇipuṅgavāḥ। alañcakruśca mālyaughaiḥ puruṣā nāgasāhvayam ॥14-69-13॥
[तान् (tān) - them; समीपगतान् (samīpagatān) - having-approached; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; निर्ययुः (niryayuḥ) - departed; वृष्णिपुङ्गवाः (vṛṣṇipuṅgavāḥ) - the foremost of the Vṛṣṇis; अलञ्चक्रुः (alañcakruḥ) - they adorned; च (ca) - and; माल्यौघैः (mālyaughaiḥ) - with flower garlands; पुरुषाः (puruṣāḥ) - men; नागसाह्वयम् (nāgasāhvayam) - Nāgasāhvaya (the city so called, i.e. Hastinapura);]
(Having heard that they had approached them, the foremost of the Vṛṣṇis departed; and the men adorned Nāgasāhvaya with heaps of garlands.)

पताकाभिर्विचित्राभिर्ध्वजैश्च विविधैरपि। वेश्मानि समलञ्चक्रुः पौराश्चापि जनाधिप ॥१४-६९-१४॥
patākābhir vicitrābhir dhvajaiś ca vividhair api। veśmāni samalañcakruḥ paurāś cāpi janādhipa ॥14-69-14॥

(With variegated flags, with banners and with various (decorations) also, the houses the citizens also adorned, at the command of the ruler.)
The citizens, at the command of their ruler, adorned the houses with variegated flags, various banners, and other decorations. (14-69-14)
देवतायतनानां च पूजा बहुविधास्तथा। संदिदेशाथ विदुरः पाण्डुपुत्रप्रियेप्सया ॥१४-६९-१५॥
devatāyatanānāṃ ca pūjā bahuvidhās tathā| sandideśātha viduraḥ pāṇḍuputrapriyepsayā ॥14-69-15॥

राजमार्गाश्च तत्रासन्सुमनोभिरलङ्कृताः। शुशुभे तत्पुरं चापि समुद्रौघनिभस्वनम् ॥१४-६९-१६॥
rājamārgāś ca tatrāsan sumanobhir alaṅkṛtāḥ। śuśubhe tatpuraṃ cāpi samudraughanibhasvanam ॥14-69-16॥
[राजमार्गाः (rājamārgāḥ) - royal roads; च (ca) - and; तत्र (tatra) - there; आसन् (āsan) - were; सुमनःभिः (sumanaḥbhiḥ) - with flowers; अलङ्कृताः (alaṅkṛtāḥ) - adorned; शुशुभे (śuśubhe) - shone; तत् (tat) - that; पुरम् (puram) - city; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; समुद्र (samudra) - ocean; ओघ (ogha) - flood; निभ (nibha) - resembling; स्वनम् (svanam) - sound;]

(By dancers, and also by those dancing, and by the sounds of singers, that city at that time was like the dwelling of Vaiśravaṇa (Kubera).)
That city, filled with dancers, dancing troupes, and the sounds of singers, was then like the abode of Vaiśravaṇa (Kubera). (14-69-17)
बन्दिभिश्च नरै राजन्स्त्रीसहायैः सहस्रशः। तत्र तत्र विविक्तेषु समन्तादुपशोभितम् ॥१४-६९-१८॥
bandibhiś ca narai rājan-strīsahāyaiḥ sahasraśaḥ। tatra tatra vivikteṣu samantād upaśobhitam ॥14-69-18॥
[बन्दिभिः (bandibhiḥ) - with bards; च (ca) - and; नरैः (naraiḥ) - with men; राजन् (rājan) - O king; स्त्री-सहायैः (strī-sahāyaiḥ) - with women-companions; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - in thousands; तत्र (tatra) - here; तत्र (tatra) - there; विविक्तेषु (vivikteṣu) - in secluded (places); समन्तात् (samantāt) - all around; उपशोभितम् (upaśobhitam) - adorned;]

पताका धूयमानाश्च श्वसता मातरिश्वना। अदर्शयन्निव तदा कुरून्वै दक्षिणोत्तरान् ॥१४-६९-१९॥
patākā dhūyamānāś ca śvasatā mātariśvanā | adarśayann iva tadā kurūn vai dakṣiṇottarān ॥14-69-19॥

The flags, being shaken by the blowing wind, then appeared as if revealing the Kurus of the southern and northern divisions. (14-69-19)
अघोषयत्तदा चापि पुरुषो राजधूर्गतः। सर्वरात्रिविहारोऽद्य रत्नाभरणलक्षणः ॥१४-६९-२०॥
