evam-uktas tu kṛṣṇena dharmaputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। vyāsam āmantrya medhāvī tato vacanam abravīt॥14-71-1॥

(Thus having been addressed by Kṛṣṇa, the son of Dharma, Yudhiṣṭhira, having addressed Vyāsa, wise, then word spoke.)
Thus, having been addressed by Kṛṣṇa, Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Dharma, then addressed the wise Vyāsa and spoke these words. (14-71-1)
यथा कालं भवान्वेत्ति हयमेधस्य तत्त्वतः। दीक्षयस्व तदा मा त्वं त्वय्यायत्तो हि मे क्रतुः ॥१४-७१-२॥
yathā kālaṁ bhavān vettī hayamedhasya tattvataḥ। dīkṣayasva tadā mā tvaṁ tvayyāyatto hi me kratuḥ॥14-71-2॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; in the manner; as; कालं (kālam) - right time; proper time; भवान् (bhavān) - you (respectful); वेत्ति (vetti) - know; understand; हयमेधस्य (hayamedhasya) - of the horse-sacrifice; तत्त्वतः (tattvataḥ) - truly; essentially; correctly; दीक्षयस्व (dīkṣayasva) - be consecrated; initiate yourself; तदा (tadā) - then; at that time; मा (mā) - do not; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; त्वय्यायत्तः (tvayy-āyattaḥ) - dependent upon you; upon you rests; हि (hi) - indeed; because; मे (me) - my; for me; क्रतुः (kratuḥ) - sacrifice; ritual;]
(As you know the right time truly for the horse-sacrifice, be consecrated then; do not (delay), you; for upon you indeed my sacrifice depends.)
As you yourself truly know the correct time for the horse-sacrifice, then be consecrated at that time; do not hesitate, for my sacrifice indeed depends upon you. (14-71-2)

अहं पैलोऽथ कौन्तेय याज्ञवल्क्यस्तथैव च। विधानं यद्यथाकालं तत्कर्तारो न संशयः ॥१४-७१-३॥
ahaṃ pailo'tha kaunteya yājñavalkyas tathaiva ca। vidhānaṃ yady athākālaṃ tatkartāro na saṃśayaḥ॥14-71-3॥
[अहं (ahaṃ) - I; पैलः (pailaḥ) - Paila; अथ (atha) - then; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; याज्ञवल्क्यः (yājñavalkyaḥ) - Yājñavalkya; तथैव (tathaiva) - likewise; च (ca) - and; विधानम् (vidhānam) - procedure; यत् (yat) - which; यथा (yathā) - as; कालम् (kālam) - at the proper time; तत् (tat) - that; कर्तारः (kartāraḥ) - performers; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(I Paila then O son of Kunti Yājñavalkya likewise and procedure which as at the proper time that performers not doubt.)
I, Paila, then Yājñavalkya likewise, O son of Kunti, are indeed those who, at the proper time, perform the procedure—there is no doubt (about this). (14-71-3)
चैत्र्यां हि पौर्णमास्यां च तव दीक्षा भविष्यति। सम्भाराः सम्भ्रियन्तां ते यज्ञार्थं पुरुषर्षभ ॥१४-७१-४॥
caitryāṃ hi paurṇamāsyāṃ ca tava dīkṣā bhaviṣyati। sambhārāḥ sambhriyantāṃ te yajñārthaṃ puruṣarṣabha ॥14-71-4॥
[चैत्र्यां (caitryām) - in the month of Caitra (spring); हि (hi) - indeed; surely; पौर्णमास्यां (paurṇamāsyām) - on the full moon day; च (ca) - and; तव (tava) - your; दीक्षा (dīkṣā) - initiation; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; सम्भाराः (sambhārāḥ) - preparations; सम्भ्रियन्तां (sambhriyantām) - let them be gathered; ते (te) - for you; यज्ञार्थं (yajñārtham) - for the sacrifice; पुरुषर्षभ (puruṣarṣabha) - O best of men;]
(In Caitra, indeed, on the full moon day and your initiation will be. Preparations let them be gathered for you for the sacrifice, O best of men.)
Your initiation will take place on the full moon day of Caitra. Let the preparations be gathered for the sacrifice, O best of men. (14-71-4)
अश्वविद्याविदश्चैव सूता विप्राश्च तद्विदः। मेध्यमश्वं परीक्षन्तां तव यज्ञार्थसिद्धये ॥१४-७१-५॥
aśvavidyāvidaścaiva sūtā viprāśca tadvidaḥ। medhyamaśvaṃ parīkṣantāṃ tava yajñārthasiddhaye॥14-71-5॥
[अश्वविद्याविदः (aśvavidyāvidaḥ) - those knowledgeable in the science of horses; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सूता (sūtā) - charioteers; विप्राः (viprāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; च (ca) - and; तद्विदः (tadvidaḥ) - those knowing that (subject, i.e., experts); मेध्य-अश्वम् (medhya-aśvam) - the sacrificial horse; परीक्षन्ताम् (parīkṣantām) - let (them) examine; तव (tava) - your; यज्ञ-अर्थ-सिद्धये (yajña-artha-siddhaye) - for the accomplishment of the purpose of the sacrifice;]
(Those knowledgeable in horse science and indeed charioteers and Brāhmaṇas and those who know that, let them examine the sacrificial horse for your sacrifice's purpose accomplishment.)
Let those expert in horse lore, the charioteers, the Brāhmaṇas, and those versed in this subject, examine your sacrificial horse for the successful fulfillment of the sacrifice. (14-71-5)
तमुत्सृज्य यथाशास्त्रं पृथिवीं सागराम्बराम्। स पर्येतु यशो नाम्ना तव पार्थिव वर्धयन् ॥१४-७१-६॥
tam utsṛjya yathā-śāstraṃ pṛthivīṃ sāgara-ambaram। sa paryetu yaśaḥ nāmnā tava pārthiva vardhayan ॥14-71-6॥
[तम् (tam) - him; उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - having abandoned; यथा (yathā) - according as; शास्त्रं (śāstram) - scripture; पृथिवीं (pṛthivīm) - earth; सागर (sāgara) - ocean; अम्बरम् (ambaram) - sky; सः (saḥ) - he; परीयेतु (paryetu) - should go around; यशः (yaśaḥ) - fame; नाम्ना (nāmnā) - by name; तव (tava) - your; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - king; वर्धयन् (vardhayan) - increasing;]
(Him having abandoned, according as scripture, earth, ocean, and sky; he should go around, fame by name, your king increasing.)
Having left him, following the scriptures, let him traverse the earth, ocean, and sky, ever spreading the fame of your name, O king. (14-71-6)

इत्युक्तः स तथेत्युक्त्वा पाण्डवः पृथिवीपतिः। चकार सर्वं राजेन्द्र यथोक्तं ब्रह्मवादिना ॥ सम्भाराश्चैव राजेन्द्र सर्वे सङ्कल्पिताभवन् ॥१४-७१-७॥
ityuktaḥ sa tathety uktvā pāṇḍavaḥ pṛthivīpatiḥ। cakāra sarvaṃ rājendra yathoktaṃ brahmavādinā॥ sambhārāś caiva rājendra sarve saṅkalpitābhavan॥14-71-7॥

(Thus addressed, he having said 'Let it be so', the Pandava king did all, O king, as spoken by the expounder of Brahman. And indeed, O king, all the arrangements were resolved.)
Thus addressed, he replied 'Let it be so', and the Pandava king, O king, did everything as instructed by the expounder of Brahman. Moreover, O king, all the necessary arrangements were duly made. (14-71-7)
स सम्भारान्समाहृत्य नृपो धर्मात्मजस्तदा। न्यवेदयदमेयात्मा कृष्णद्वैपायनाय वै ॥१४-७१-८॥
sa sambhārān samāhṛtya nṛpo dharmātmajas tadā। nyavedayad ameyātmā kṛṣṇadvaitpāyanāya vai॥14-71-8॥
[स (sa) - he; सम्भारान् (sambhārān) - arrangements; समाहृत्य (samāhṛtya) - having collected; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - the king; धर्मात्मजः (dharmātmajaḥ) - the son of Dharma; तदा (tadā) - then; न्यवेदयत् (nyavedayat) - reported; अमेयात्मा (ameyātmā) - of immeasurable soul; कृष्णद्वैपायनाय (kṛṣṇadvaitpāyanāya) - to Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(He arrangements having collected, the king, the son of Dharma, then, reported, of immeasurable soul, to Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana, indeed.)
He, the king, son of Dharma, having collected the arrangements, then reported everything to the incomparably great Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana. (14-71-8)
ततोऽब्रवीन्महातेजा व्यासो धर्मात्मजं नृपम्। यथाकालं यथायोगं सज्जाः स्म तव दीक्षणे ॥१४-७१-९॥
tato'bravīn mahātejā vyāso dharmātmajaṃ nṛpam। yathākālaṃ yathāyogaṃ sajjāḥ sma tava dīkṣaṇe ॥14-71-9॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; महातेजाः (mahātejāḥ) - of great splendor; व्यासः (vyāsaḥ) - Vyāsa; धर्मात्मजम् (dharmātmajam) - son of Dharma; नृपम् (nṛpam) - king; यथाकालम् (yathākālam) - at the proper time; यथायोगम् (yathāyogam) - appropriately; सज्जाः (sajjāḥ) - ready; स्म (sma) - indeed; तव (tava) - at your; दीक्षणे (dīkṣaṇe) - initiation;]
(Then said (the) great-splendored Vyāsa (to the) son of Dharma, the king: At the proper time, appropriately, we are ready indeed at your initiation.)
Then the great-splendor Vyāsa said to the king, the son of Dharma: At the proper time, as appropriate, we are certainly all ready for your initiation. (14-71-9)
स्फ्यश्च कूर्चश्च सौवर्णो यच्चान्यदपि कौरव। तत्र योग्यं भवेत्किञ्चित्तद्रौक्मं क्रियतामिति ॥१४-७१-१०॥
sphyaś ca kūrcaś ca sauvarṇo yac cānyad api kaurava। tatra yogyaṃ bhavet kiñcit tad raukmaṃ kriyatām iti॥14-71-10॥
[स्फ्यः (sphyaḥ) - sacrificial wooden ladle; च (ca) - and; कूर्चः (kūrcaḥ) - handful of kusa grass; च (ca) - and; सौवर्णः (sauvarṇaḥ) - made of gold; यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; अन्यत् (anyat) - other; अपि (api) - also; कौरव (kaurava) - O Kaurava; तत्र (tatra) - there; योग्यम् (yogyam) - suitable; भवेत् (bhavet) - there might be; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - something; तत् (tat) - that; रौक्मम् (raukmam) - made of gold; क्रियताम् (kriyatām) - let it be made; इति (iti) - thus;]
(Sphyas and kūrcas made of gold and whatever else, O Kaurava, there, suitable, might be something, that let it be made of gold thus.)
O Kaurava, the sphyas and kūrcas made of gold, and whatever else suitable might be there, let that be made of gold thus. (14-71-10)
अश्वश्चोत्सृज्यतामद्य पृथ्व्यामथ यथाक्रमम्। सुगुप्तश्च चरत्वेष यथाशास्त्रं युधिष्ठिर ॥१४-७१-११॥
aśvaś cotsṛjyatām adya pṛthvyām atha yathākramam। suguptaś ca caratveṣa yathāśāstraṃ yudhiṣṭhira ॥14-71-11॥
[अश्वः (aśvaḥ) - horse; च (ca) - and; उत्सृज्यताम् (utsṛjyatām) - let be released; अद्य (adya) - today; पृथ्व्याम् (pṛthvyām) - on earth; अथ (atha) - then; यथाक्रमम् (yathākramam) - according to order; सुगुप्तः (suguptaḥ) - well-guarded; च (ca) - and; चरतु (caratu) - let move; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; यथाशास्त्रम् (yathāśāstram) - according to the śāstra (scripture/law); युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - O Yudhiṣṭhira;]
(Horse and let be released today on earth, then according to order; well-guarded and let this move according to the śāstra, O Yudhiṣṭhira.)
O Yudhiṣṭhira, let the horse be released today on earth according to order, and let it move well-guarded according to the śāstra. (14-71-11)

ayam aśvo mayā brahman utsṛṣṭaḥ pṛthivīm imām। cariṣyati yathākāmam tatra vai saṃvidhīyatām॥14-71-12॥
[अयम् (ayam) - this; अश्वः (aśvaḥ) - horse; मया (mayā) - by me; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahmin; उत्सृष्टः (utsṛṣṭaḥ) - let loose; released; पृथिवीम् (pṛthivīm) - the earth; इमाम् (imām) - this; चरिष्यति (cariṣyati) - will wander; will roam; यथा (yathā) - as; according as; कामम् (kāmam) - desire; wish; तत्र (tatra) - there; वै (vai) - indeed; truly; संविधीयताम् (saṃvidhīyatām) - let arrangements be made; (let it be) managed;]
(This horse by me, O Brahmin, let loose, this earth (on), will wander as desire, there indeed let arrangements be made.)
O Brahmin, this horse, released by me, will roam this earth as it wishes; let arrangements be made there accordingly. (14-71-12)
पृथिवीं पर्यटन्तं हि तुरगं कामचारिणम्। कः पालयेदिति मुने तद्भवान्वक्तुमर्हति ॥१४-७१-१३॥
pṛthivīṃ paryaṭantaṃ hi turagaṃ kāmacāriṇam। kaḥ pālayed iti mune tad bhavān vaktum arhati ॥14-71-13॥
[पृथिवीं (pṛthivīṃ) - earth (accusative singular); पर्यटन्तं (paryaṭantam) - wandering; हि (hi) - indeed; तुरगं (turagam) - horse; कामचारिणम् (kāmacāriṇam) - moving as it wishes; कः (kaḥ) - who; पालयेत् (pālayet) - would restrain; इति (iti) - thus; मुने (mune) - O sage; तत् (tat) - that; भवान् (bhavān) - your honor; वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to speak; अर्हति (arhati) - is worthy;]
(Earth wandering indeed the horse moving as it wishes, who would restrain, thus, O sage, that your honor to speak is worthy.)
O sage, who indeed would restrain a horse wandering the earth as it wishes? Of that, your honor is worthy to speak. (14-71-13)

ity uktaḥ sa tu rājendra kṛṣṇadvaipāyano'bravīt। bhīmasenād avarajaḥ śreṣṭhaḥ sarvadhanuṣmatām॥14-71-14॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been addressed; स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; कृष्णद्वैपायनः (kṛṣṇadvaipāyanaḥ) - Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana (Vyāsa); अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; भीमसेनात् (bhīmasenāt) - than Bhīmasena; अवरजः (avarajaḥ) - younger brother; श्रेष्ठः (śreṣṭhaḥ) - the best; सर्वधनुष्मताम् (sarvadhanuṣmatām) - of all bowmen;]
(Thus having been addressed, he but, O king, Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana spoke: the younger brother than Bhīmasena, the best of all bowmen.)
Thus addressed, O king, Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana (Vyāsa) spoke: "The younger brother of Bhīmasena is the best among all bowmen." (14-71-14)
जिष्णुः सहिष्णुर्धृष्णुश्च स एनं पालयिष्यति। शक्तः स हि महीं जेतुं निवातकवचान्तकः ॥१४-७१-१५॥
jiṣṇuḥ sahiṣṇur dhṛṣṇuś ca sa enaṃ pālayiṣyati. śaktaḥ sa hi mahīṃ jetuṃ nivātakavacāntakaḥ॥14-71-15॥
[जिष्णुः (jiṣṇuḥ) - victorious one; सहिष्णुः (sahiṣṇuḥ) - forbearing one; धृष्णुः (dhṛṣṇuḥ) - bold one; च (ca) - and; स (sa) - he; एनम् (enam) - this (person); पालयिष्यति (pālayiṣyati) - will protect; शक्तः (śaktaḥ) - capable; स (sa) - he; हि (hi) - indeed; महीं (mahīṃ) - the earth; जेतुम् (jetum) - to conquer; निवातकवचान्तकः (nivātakavacāntakaḥ) - destroyer of the Nivātakavaca;]
(Victorious, forbearing, and bold, and he will protect this (person). Capable, indeed he to conquer the earth, destroyer of the Nivātakavaca.)
He who is victorious, forbearing, and bold will protect this person. He is capable, indeed, of conquering the earth, being the destroyer of the Nivātakavaca. (14-71-15)
तस्मिन्ह्यस्त्राणि दिव्यानि दिव्यं संहननं तथा। दिव्यं धनुश्चेषुधी च स एनमनुयास्यति ॥१४-७१-१६॥
tasmin hy astrāṇi divyāni divyaṃ saṃhananaṃ tathā। divyaṃ dhanuś ceṣudhī ca sa enam anuyāsyati॥14-71-16॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in him; in that one; हि (hi) - indeed; अस्त्राणि (astrāṇi) - weapons; दिव्यानि (divyāni) - divine; heavenly; दिव्यं (divyaṃ) - divine; heavenly; संहननं (saṃhananam) - body; physique; तथा (tathā) - likewise; in addition; दिव्यं (divyaṃ) - divine; heavenly; धनुः (dhanuḥ) - bow; च (ca) - and; इषुधी (iṣudhī) - quivers; च (ca) - and; सः (saḥ) - he; एनम् (enam) - him; this one; अनुयास्यति (anuyāsyati) - will accompany; will follow;]
(In him indeed (are) divine weapons, a divine body likewise, a divine bow and quivers also; he will follow him.)

स हि धर्मार्थकुशलः सर्वविद्याविशारदः। यथाशास्त्रं नृपश्रेष्ठ चारयिष्यति ते हयम् ॥१४-७१-१७॥
sa hi dharmārthakuśalaḥ sarvavidyāviśāradaḥ। yathāśāstraṃ nṛpaśreṣṭha cārayiṣyati te hayam ॥14-71-17॥
[स (sa) - he; हि (hi) - indeed; धर्मार्थकुशलः (dharmārthakuśalaḥ) - skilled in dharma and artha; सर्वविद्याविशारदः (sarvavidyāviśāradaḥ) - expert in all sciences; यथाशास्त्रं (yathāśāstram) - according to śāstra; नृपश्रेष्ठ (nṛpaśreṣṭha) - O best of kings; चारयिष्यति (cārayiṣyati) - will make move; ते (te) - your; हयम् (hayam) - horse;]
(He indeed, skilled in dharma and artha, expert in all sciences, according to the śāstra, O best of kings, will make your horse go.)

राजपुत्रो महाबाहुः श्यामो राजीवलोचनः। अभिमन्योः पिता वीरः स एनमनुयास्यति ॥१४-७१-१८॥

(The prince, mighty-armed, dark-complexioned, lotus-eyed, the heroic father of Abhimanyu, he will follow him.)

भीमसेनोऽपि तेजस्वी कौन्तेयोऽमितविक्रमः। समर्थो रक्षितुं राष्ट्रं नकुलश्च विशां पते ॥१४-७१-१९॥

[भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhimasena; अपि (api) - also; तेजस्वी (tejasvī) - possessing brilliance; कौन्तेयः (kaunteyaḥ) - son of Kunti; अमितविक्रमः (amitavikramaḥ) - of immeasurable valor; समर्थः (samarthaḥ) - capable; रक्षितुम् (rakṣitum) - to protect; राष्ट्रम् (rāṣṭram) - kingdom; नकुलः (nakulaḥ) - Nakula; च (ca) - and; विशां पते (viśāṃ pate) - O lord of people;]
(Bhimasena also, possessing brilliance, the son of Kunti, of immeasurable valor, capable to protect the kingdom, and Nakula, O lord of people.)
Bhimasena too, brilliant and the son of Kunti with immeasurable valor, is capable of protecting the kingdom; so is Nakula, O lord of the people. (14-71-19)
सहदेवस्तु कौरव्य समाधास्यति बुद्धिमान्। कुटुम्बतन्त्रं विधिवत्सर्वमेव महायशाः ॥१४-७१-२०॥
sahadevastu kauravya samādhāsyati buddhimān। kuṭumbatantraṃ vidhivatsarvameva mahāyaśāḥ ॥14-71-20॥
[सहदेवः (sahadevaḥ) - Sahadeva; तु (tu) - but; कौरव्य (kauravya) - O descendant of Kuru; समाधास्यति (samādhāsyati) - will properly organize; बुद्धिमान् (buddhimān) - intelligent; कुटुम्बतन्त्रम् (kuṭumbatantram) - family management; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - according to rule; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; एव (eva) - indeed; महायशाः (mahāyaśāḥ) - greatly renowned;]
(Sahadeva but, O descendant of Kuru, intelligent, will properly organize family management according to rule all indeed, greatly renowned.)
But Sahadeva, O Kauravya, intelligent and greatly renowned, will organize all the affairs of the household strictly according to proper rule. (14-71-20)
तत्तु सर्वं यथान्यायमुक्तं कुरुकुलोद्वहः। चकार फल्गुनं चापि संदिदेश हयं प्रति ॥१४-७१-२१॥
tattu sarvaṃ yathānyāyamuktaṃ kurukulodvahaḥ। cakāra phalgunaṃ cāpi saṃdideśa hayaṃ prati ॥14-71-21॥
[तत् (tat) - that; तु (tu) - but; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; यथान्यायम् (yathānyāyam) - according to justice; उक्तम् (uktam) - spoken; कुरुकुलोद्वहः (kurukulodvahaḥ) - the best of the Kuru family; चकार (cakāra) - did; फल्गुनम् (phalgunaṃ) - Phalguna (Arjuna); च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; संदिदेश (saṃdideśa) - instructed; हयम् (hayam) - the horse; प्रति (prati) - towards;]
(That but all according to justice spoken, the best of the Kuru family did; also (he) instructed Phalguna and the horse towards.)
But the best of the Kuru family did all that had been spoken according to justice; he also instructed Phalguna and the horse accordingly. (14-71-21)
युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥
yudhiṣṭhira uvāca॥
[युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhiṣṭhira; (proper noun; name of a person); उवाच (uvāca) - spoke;]
(Yudhiṣṭhira spoke;)
Yudhiṣṭhira said;
एह्यर्जुन त्वया वीर हयोऽयं परिपाल्यताम्। त्वमर्हो रक्षितुं ह्येनं नान्यः कश्चन मानवः ॥१४-७१-२२॥
ehy arjuna tvayā vīra hayo'yaṁ paripālyatām। tvam arho rakṣituṁ hy enaṁ nānyaḥ kaścana mānavaḥ ॥14-71-22॥
[एहि (ehi) - come; अर्जुन (arjuna) - Arjuna; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; वीर (vīra) - hero; हयः (hayaḥ) - horse; अयम् (ayam) - this; परिपाल्यताम् (paripālyatām) - should be protected; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अर्हः (arhaḥ) - worthy; रक्षितुम् (rakṣitum) - to protect; हि (hi) - indeed; एनम् (enam) - this; न (na) - not; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - another; कश्चन (kaścana) - any; मानवः (mānavaḥ) - man;]
(Come, Arjuna, by you, hero, this horse should be protected. You are worthy to protect indeed this; not another any man.)
Come, Arjuna, O hero, this horse should be protected by you. You alone are fit to protect it, for no other man can do so. (14-71-22)
ये चापि त्वां महाबाहो प्रत्युदीयुर्नराधिपाः। तैर्विग्रहो यथा न स्यात्तथा कार्यं त्वयानघ ॥१४-७१-२३॥
ye cāpi tvāṁ mahābāho pratyudīyur narādhipāḥ। tair vigraho yathā na syāt tathā kāryaṁ tvayānagha ॥14-71-23॥
[ये (ye) - who; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; त्वां (tvām) - you; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; प्रत्युदीयुः (pratyudīyuḥ) - approached (in opposition); नराधिपाः (narādhipāḥ) - the kings; तैः (taiḥ) - with them; विग्रहः (vigrahaḥ) - conflict; यथा (yathā) - so that; न (na) - not; स्यात् (syāt) - may be; तथा (tathā) - thus; कार्यं (kāryam) - should be done; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one;]
(Who also, O mighty-armed, the kings approached you; with them conflict so that not may be, thus should be done by you, O sinless one.)
O mighty-armed and sinless one, as for those kings who have also approached you in opposition, you should act in such a way that there may be no conflict with them. (14-71-23)
आख्यातव्यश्च भवता यज्ञोऽयं मम सर्वशः। पार्थिवेभ्यो महाबाहो समये गम्यतामिति ॥१४-७१-२४॥
ākhyātavyaś ca bhavatā yajño 'yaṁ mama sarvaśaḥ। pārthivebhyo mahābāho samaye gamyatām iti ॥14-71-24॥
[आख्यातव्यः (ākhyātavyaḥ) - (it is) to be announced; च (ca) - and; भवता (bhavatā) - by you; यज्ञः (yajñaḥ) - sacrifice; अयम् (ayam) - this; मम (mama) - my; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - entirely; पार्थिवेभ्यः (pārthivebhyaḥ) - to the kings; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; समये (samaye) - at the proper time; गम्यताम् (gamyatām) - let (them) go; इति (iti) - thus;]
(And by you this sacrifice of mine is entirely to be announced to the kings, O mighty-armed, at the proper time let (them) go, thus.)
O mighty-armed one, let this sacrifice of mine be completely announced by you to the kings; at the appointed time, let them proceed, thus. (14-71-24)
एवमुक्त्वा स धर्मात्मा भ्रातरं सव्यसाचिनम्। भीमं च नकुलं चैव पुरगुप्तौ समादधत् ॥१४-७१-२५॥
evam uktvā sa dharmātmā bhrātaraṁ savyasācinam। bhīmaṁ ca nakulaṁ caiva puraguptau samādadhat॥14-71-25॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; स (sa) - he; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - the righteous-souled; भ्रातरं (bhrātaram) - the brother; सव्यसाचिनम् (savyasācinam) - the ambidextrous (referring to Arjuna); भीमं (bhīmam) - Bhīma; च (ca) - and; नकुलं (nakulam) - Nakula; चैव (ca eva) - and also; पुरगुप्तौ (puraguptau) - to the guarding of the city; समादधत् (samādadhat) - he assigned;]
(Thus having spoken, he, the righteous-souled, assigned his brother, the ambidextrous (Arjuna), Bhīma and also Nakula to the guarding of the city.)
Having thus spoken, the righteous-souled one assigned his brother, the ambidextrous Arjuna, as well as Bhīma and Nakula, to guard the city. (14-71-25)
कुटुम्बतन्त्रे च तथा सहदेवं युधां पतिम्। अनुमान्य महीपालं धृतराष्ट्रं युधिष्ठिरः ॥१४-७१-२६॥
kuṭumbatantré ca tathā sahadevaṃ yudhāṃ patim। anumānya mahīpālaṃ dhṛtarāṣṭraṃ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥14-71-26॥
[कुटुम्बतन्त्रे (kuṭumbatantré) - in the family administration; च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - likewise; सहदेवं (sahadevaṃ) - Sahadeva; युधां (yudhāṃ) - of the warriors; पतिम् (patim) - lord; अनुमान्य (anumānya) - having permitted; महीपालं (mahīpālaṃ) - the king; धृतराष्ट्रं (dhṛtarāṣṭraṃ) - Dhṛtarāṣṭra; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira;]
(In the family administration and likewise, Sahadeva, lord of the warriors, having permitted the king Dhṛtarāṣṭra, Yudhiṣṭhira (did so).)
In matters of family administration, just so, having obtained Dhṛtarāṣṭra's permission, Yudhiṣṭhira placed Sahadeva, lord of the warriors, in charge. (14-71-26)
