dīkṣākāle tu samprāpte tataste sumahartvijaḥ। vidhivad dīkṣayāmāsur aśvamedhāya pārthivam ॥14-72-1॥

कृत्वा स पशुबन्धांश्च दीक्षितः पाण्डुनन्दनः। धर्मराजो महातेजाः सहर्त्विग्भिर्व्यरोचत ॥१४-७२-२॥

(Having performed animal-sacrifices and consecrated, the descendant of Pāṇḍu, king Dharma, of great splendor, with the officiating priests, shone.)
Having performed the animal-sacrifices and having been consecrated, the illustrious Yudhiṣṭhira, descendant of Pāṇḍu, shone brilliantly together with the officiating priests. (14-72-2)
हयश्च हयमेधार्थं स्वयं स ब्रह्मवादिना। उत्सृष्टः शास्त्रविधिना व्यासेनामिततेजसा ॥१४-७२-३॥

स राजा धर्मजो राजन्दीक्षितो विबभौ तदा। हेममाली रुक्मकण्ठः प्रदीप्त इव पावकः ॥१४-७२-४॥
sa rājā dharmajo rājandīkṣito vibhbhau tadā। hemamālī rukmakaṇṭhaḥ pradīpta iva pāvakaḥ ॥14-72-4॥

(He, the king, born of dharma, initiated as king, shone then, having a garland of gold, a golden neck ornament, illuminated, like fire.)
At that time, the king, son of Dharma, who had been consecrated as ruler, shone forth, adorned with a garland of gold and a golden neck ornament, radiant like fire. (14-72-4)
कृष्णाजिनी दण्डपाणिः क्षौमवासाः स धर्मजः। विबभौ द्युतिमान्भूयः प्रजापतिरिवाध्वरे ॥१४-७२-५॥
kṛṣṇājinī daṇḍapāṇiḥ kṣaumavāsāḥ sa dharmajaḥ। vibabhau dyutimānbhūyaḥ prajāpatirivādhvare ॥14-72-5॥

He, born of Dharma, dressed in linen and wearing a black antelope skin, holding a staff, shone out even more radiantly, like Prajapati at a sacrifice. (14-72-5)
तथैवास्यर्त्विजः सर्वे तुल्यवेषा विशां पते। बभूवुरर्जुनश्चैव प्रदीप्त इव पावकः ॥१४-७२-६॥
tathaivāsyarṭvijaḥ sarve tulyaveṣā viśāṃ pate। babhūvur arjunaś caiva pradīpta iva pāvakaḥ॥14-72-6॥

श्वेताश्वः कृष्णसारं तं ससाराश्वं धनञ्जयः। विधिवत्पृथिवीपाल धर्मराजस्य शासनात् ॥१४-७२-७॥
śvetāśvaḥ kṛṣṇasāraṃ taṃ sasārāśvaṃ dhanañjayaḥ. vidhivat pṛthivīpāla dharmarājasya śāsanāt ॥14-72-7॥

विक्षिपन्गाण्डिवं राजन्बद्धगोधाङ्गुलित्रवान्। तमश्वं पृथिवीपाल मुदा युक्तः ससार ह ॥१४-७२-८॥
vikṣipan gāṇḍivaṃ rājan baddha-godhāṅguli-travān। tam aśvaṃ pṛthivī-pāla mudā yuktaḥ sasāra ha ॥14-72-8॥
[विक्षिपन् (vikṣipan) - throwing; गाण्डिवं (gāṇḍivam) - Gāṇḍiva bow; राजन् (rājan) - O king; बद्धगोधाङ्गुलित्रवान् (baddha-godhāṅguli-travān) - having bound a lizard’s finger ring; तम् (tam) - that; अश्वम् (aśvam) - horse; पृथिवीपाल (pṛthivī-pāla) - protector of the earth; मुदा (mudā) - with joy; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - mounted; ससार (sasāra) - he drove; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Throwing the Gāṇḍiva bow, O king, having bound the lizard’s finger ring, that horse the protector of the earth, with joy, mounted, indeed, he drove.)
O king, throwing aside the Gāṇḍiva bow and wearing the lizard's finger-ring, the protector of the earth, with joy, mounted the horse and rode on. (14-72-8)
आकुमारं तदा राजन्नागमत्तत्पुरं विभो। द्रष्टुकामं कुरुश्रेष्ठं प्रयास्यन्तं धनञ्जयम् ॥१४-७२-९॥
ākumāraṃ tadā rājann āgamat tat-puraṃ vibho। draṣṭukāmaṃ kuru-śreṣṭhaṃ prayāsyantaṃ dhanañjayam ॥14-72-9॥

(Then, O king, to the prince that lord came to that city, wishing to see Dhanañjaya, the best of the Kurus, who was about to go.)

तेषामन्योन्यसंमर्दादूष्मेव समजायत। दिदृक्षूणां हयं तं च तं चैव हयसारिणम् ॥१४-७२-१०॥
teṣām anyonya-saṁmardād ūṣma eva samajāyata. didṛkṣūṇāṁ hayaṁ taṁ ca taṁ caiva haya-sāriṇam ॥14-72-10॥
[तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; अन्योन्य (anyonya) - mutual; संमर्दात् (saṁmardāt) - from collision; ऊष्मा (ūṣmā) - heat; इव (iva) - like; समजायत (samajāyata) - arose; दिदृक्षूणाम् (didṛkṣūṇām) - of those wishing to see; हयम् (hayam) - the horse; तम् (tam) - that; च (ca) - and; तम् (tam) - that; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - also; हय-सारिणम् (haya-sāriṇam) - the horse driver;]

ततः शब्दो महाराज दशाशाः प्रतिपूरयन्। बभूव प्रेक्षतां नॄणां कुन्तीपुत्रं धनञ्जयम् ॥१४-७२-११॥
tataḥ śabdo mahārāja daśāśāḥ pratipūrayān। babhūva prekṣatāṃ nṝṇāṃ kuntīputraṃ dhanañjayam॥14-72-11॥

एष गच्छति कौन्तेयस्तुरगश्चैव दीप्तिमान्। यमन्वेति महाबाहुः संस्पृशन्धनुरुत्तमम् ॥१४-७२-१२॥
eṣa gacchati kaunteyas turagaś caiva dīptimān। yam anveti mahābāhuḥ saṁspṛśan dhanur uttamam॥14-72-12॥
[एष (eṣa) - this (one); गच्छति (gacchati) - goes; कौन्तेयः (kaunteyaḥ) - son of Kunti (Arjuna); तुरगः (turagaḥ) - horse; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; surely; दीप्तिमान् (dīptimān) - resplendent; shining; यम् (yam) - whom; अन्वेति (anveti) - follows; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - mighty-armed (Arjuna); संस्पृशन् (saṁspṛśan) - touching; धनुः (dhanuḥ) - bow; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - excellent; best;]
(This (one) goes, the son of Kunti, and indeed the resplendent horse; whom follows the mighty-armed, touching the excellent bow.)
The son of Kunti advances, and the resplendent horse as well; the mighty-armed Arjuna follows him, touching his excellent bow. (14-72-12)
एवं शुश्राव वदतां गिरो जिष्णुरुदारधीः। स्वस्ति तेऽस्तु व्रजारिष्टं पुनश्चैहीति भारत ॥१४-७२-१३॥
evaṃ śuśrāva vadatāṃ giro jiṣṇur udāra-dhīḥ। svasti te 'stu vrajāriṣṭaṃ punaś ca iha iti bhārata ॥14-72-13॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; शुश्राव (śuśrāva) - he heard; वदताम् (vadatām) - of those speaking; गिरः (giraḥ) - words; जिष्णुः (jiṣṇuḥ) - Jishnu (Arjuna); उदारधीः (udāra-dhīḥ) - of noble mind; स्वस्ति (svasti) - farewell; ते (te) - to you; अस्तु (astu) - may it be; व्रज (vraja) - go; अरिष्टम् (ariṣṭam) - unharmed; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; च (ca) - and; इह (iha) - here; इति (iti) - thus; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Thus Jiṣṇu, of noble mind, heard the words of those speaking. Farewell to you; may you go unharmed, and again come here, thus, O Bhārata.)
Thus Arjuna, of noble mind, listened to the words spoken. "Farewell to you; may you journey unharmed and return here again," O Bhārata. (14-72-13)
अथापरे मनुष्येन्द्र पुरुषा वाक्यमब्रुवन्। नैनं पश्याम संमर्दे धनुरेतत्प्रदृश्यते ॥१४-७२-१४॥
athāpare manuṣyendra puruṣā vākyam abruvan। nainaṃ paśyāma saṃmarde dhanur etat pradṛśyate ॥14-72-14॥
[अथ (atha) - now; then; अपरे (apare) - others; मनुष्येन्द्र (manuṣyendra) - O king of men; पुरुषाः (puruṣāḥ) - men; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - statement; speech; अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - spoke; न (na) - not; एनम् (enam) - him; this (one); पश्याम (paśyāma) - we see; संमर्दे (saṃmarde) - in the confusion (of battle); धनुः (dhanuḥ) - bow; एतत् (etat) - this; प्रदृश्यते (pradṛśyate) - is being seen; appears;]
(Now others, O king of men, the men spoke a statement: "Not this one we see in the confusion; this bow is being seen." (14-72-14))

एतद्धि भीमनिर्ह्रादं विश्रुतं गाण्डिवं धनुः। स्वस्ति गच्छत्वरिष्टं वै पन्थानमकुतोभयम् ॥ निवृत्तमेनं द्रक्ष्यामः पुनरेवं च तेऽब्रुवन् ॥१४-७२-१५॥
etad dhi bhīma-nirhrādaṃ viśrutaṃ gāṇḍivaṃ dhanuḥ। svasti gacchat variṣṭaṃ vai panthānam akutobhayam॥ nivṛttam enaṃ drakṣyāmaḥ punar evaṃ ca te 'bruvan॥14-72-15॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; हि (hi) - indeed; भीमनिर्ह्रादम् (bhīma-nirhrādam) - terrible-sounding; (bhīma: terrible; nirhrāda: sound;) विश्रुतम् (viśrutam) - well-known; गाण्डिवम् (gāṇḍivam) - Gandiva (proper noun, the bow); धनुः (dhanuḥ) - bow; स्वस्ति (svasti) - well-being; गच्छतु (gacchatu) - may (he) go; अरिष्टम् (ariṣṭam) - free from harm; वै (vai) - indeed; पन्थानम् (panthānam) - path; अकुतोभयम् (akutobhayam) - without fear from anywhere; निवृत्तम् (nivṛttam) - returned; एनम् (enam) - him; द्रक्ष्यामः (drakṣyāmaḥ) - we will see; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - they; अब्रुवन् (abravan) - said;]
(This indeed terrible-sounding, well-known Gandiva bow. Well-being, may (he) go, free from harm indeed, path without fear from anywhere. Returned him we will see again, thus and they said. (14-72-15))
This is indeed the terrible-sounding, well-known Gandiva bow. Let him go safely, on a path that is free from danger and fear. We shall see him again when he has returned—thus, they spoke. (14-72-15)
एवमाद्या मनुष्याणां स्त्रीणां च भरतर्षभ। शुश्राव मधुरा वाचः पुनः पुनरुदीरिताः ॥१४-७२-१६॥
evamādyā manuṣyāṇāṃ strīṇāṃ ca bharatarṣabha। śuśrāva madhurā vācaḥ punaḥ punarudīritāḥ ॥14-72-16॥

याज्ञवल्क्यस्य शिष्यश्च कुशलो यज्ञकर्मणि। प्रायात्पार्थेन सहितः शान्त्यर्थं वेदपारगः ॥१४-७२-१७॥
yājñavalkyasya śiṣyaś ca kuśalo yajñakarmaṇi. prāyāt pārthena sahitaḥ śāntyarthaṃ vedapāragaḥ ॥14-72-17॥

पाण्डवैः पृथिवीमश्वो निर्जितामस्त्रतेजसा। चचार स महाराज यथादेशं स सत्तम ॥१४-७२-१९॥
pāṇḍavaiḥ pṛthivīmaśvo nirjitāmastratejasā। cacāra sa mahārāja yathādeśaṃ sa sattama ॥14-72-19॥

तत्र युद्धानि वृत्तानि यान्यासन्पाण्डवस्य ह। तानि वक्ष्यामि ते वीर विचित्राणि महान्ति च ॥१४-७२-२०॥
tatra yuddhāni vṛttāni yāni āsan pāṇḍavasya ha। tāni vakṣyāmi te vīra vicitrāṇi mahānti ca॥14-72-20॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; युद्धानि (yuddhāni) - battles; वृत्तानि (vṛttāni) - occurred; यानि (yāni) - which; आसन् (āsan) - were; पाण्डवस्य (pāṇḍavasya) - of Pāṇḍava; ह (ha) - indeed; तानि (tāni) - those; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - I shall recount; ते (te) - to you; वीर (vīra) - O hero; विचित्राणि (vicitrāṇi) - wonderful; महान्ति (mahānti) - great; च (ca) - and;]
(There battles occurred which were of Pāṇḍava indeed; those I shall recount to you, O hero, wonderful and great and.)
There, O hero, I shall recount to you the wonderful and great battles that indeed occurred on the side of Pāṇḍava. (14-72-20)
स हयः पृथिवीं राजन्प्रदक्षिणमरिंदम। ससारोत्तरतः पूर्वं तन्निबोध महीपते ॥१४-७२-२१॥
sa hayaḥ pṛthivīṃ rājan pradakṣiṇam ariṃdama। sasāra uttarataḥ pūrvaṃ tan nibodha mahīpate ॥14-72-21॥
[स (sa) - he; हयः (hayaḥ) - horse; पृथिवीं (pṛthivīṃ) - earth (accusative singular); राजन् (rājan) - O king; प्रदक्षिणम् (pradakṣiṇam) - circumambulation; अरिंदम (ariṃdama) - destroyer of enemies; ससार (sasāra) - went; उत्तरतः (uttarataḥ) - from the north; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - to the east; तत् (tat) - that; निबोध (nibodha) - know; महीपते (mahīpate) - O lord of the earth;]
(He, the horse, O king, circumambulation, destroyer of enemies, went from the north to the east; that, know, O lord of the earth.)
O king, the horse circled the earth in a rightwise (pradakṣiṇa) direction, O destroyer of enemies, going from the north to the east; understand that, O lord of the earth. (14-72-21)
अवमृद्नन्स राष्ट्राणि पार्थिवानां हयोत्तमः। शनैस्तदा परिययौ श्वेताश्वश्च महारथः ॥१४-७२-२२॥
avamṛdnans rāṣṭrāṇi pārthivānāṃ hayottamaḥ। śanais tadā pariyayau śvetāśvaś ca mahārathaḥ ॥14-72-22॥
[अवमृद्नन् (avamṛdnan) - crushing; राष्ट्राणि (rāṣṭrāṇi) - kingdoms; पार्थिवानाम् (pārthivānām) - of kings; हयः-उत्कृष्टः (hayaḥ-uttamaḥ) - the excellent horse; शनैः (śanaiḥ) - slowly; तदा (tadā) - then; परिययौ (pariyayau) - went around; श्वेताश्वः (śvetāśvaḥ) - Śvetāśva; च (ca) - and; महारथः (mahārathaḥ) - the great warrior;]
(Crushing the kingdoms of the kings, the excellent horse, slowly then, went around; and Śvetāśva, the great warrior.)

तत्र सङ्कलना नास्ति राज्ञामयुतशस्तदा। येऽयुध्यन्त महाराज क्षत्रिया हतबान्धवाः ॥१४-७२-२३॥
tatra saṅkalanā nāsti rājñām ayutaśas tadā। ye 'yudhyanta mahārāja kṣatriyā hatabāndhavāḥ ॥14-72-23॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; सङ्कलना (saṅkalanā) - gathering; collection; नास्ति (nāsti) - is not; राज्ञाम् (rājñām) - of kings; अयुतशः (ayutaśas) - by tens of thousands; in multitudes; तदा (tadā) - then; ये (ye) - who; अयुध्यन्त (ayudhyanta) - fought; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; क्षत्रियाः (kṣatriyāḥ) - warriors; Kṣatriyas; हतबान्धवाः (hatabāndhavāḥ) - having slain their kin;]
(There, gathering is not, of kings by tens of thousands then; who fought, O great king, Kṣatriya warriors having slain their kin.)
There, O great king, there was no gathering of kings by tens of thousands; those Kṣatriya warriors who fought had slain their own kin. (14-72-23)
किराता विकृता राजन्बहवोऽसिधनुर्धराः। म्लेच्छाश्चान्ये बहुविधाः पूर्वं विनिकृता रणे ॥१४-७२-२४॥
kirātā vikṛtā rājanbahavo'sidhanurdharāḥ. mlecchāścānye bahuvidhāḥ pūrvaṃ vinikṛtā raṇe ॥14-72-24॥
[किराता (kirātā) - Kirātas; (a mountain tribe); विकृता (vikṛtā) - deformed; changed in form; राजन् (rājan) - O king; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; असि (asi) - sword; धनुर्धराः (dhanurdharāḥ) - bow-holders; archers; म्लेच्छाः (mlecchāḥ) - barbarians; foreigners; च (ca) - and; अन्ये (anye) - other; बहुविधाः (bahuvidhāḥ) - of many kinds; पूर्वं (pūrvaṃ) - formerly; previously; वinikृता (vinikṛtā) - slain; cut down; रणे (raṇe) - in battle;]
(Kirātas deformed O king, many sword bow-holders, barbarians and others of many kinds formerly slain in battle.)
O king, many deformed Kirātas, wielders of swords and bows, barbarians, and other people of many kinds were formerly slain in battle. (14-72-24)
आर्याश्च पृथिवीपालाः प्रहृष्टनरवाहनाः। समीयुः पाण्डुपुत्रेण बहवो युद्धदुर्मदाः ॥१४-७२-२५॥
āryāś ca pṛthivī-pālāḥ prahṛṣṭa-nara-vāhanāḥ. samīyuḥ pāṇḍu-putreṇa bahavo yuddha-durmadāḥ ॥14-72-25॥
[आर्याः (āryāḥ) - noble ones; च (ca) - and; पृथिवीपालाः (pṛthivīpālāḥ) - kings of the earth; प्रहृष्टनरवाहनाः (prahṛṣṭa-nara-vāhanāḥ) - having delighted chariots (filled with) men; (i.e. with delighted men as charioteers); समीयुः (samīyuḥ) - approached; पाण्डुपुत्रेण (pāṇḍu-putreṇa) - by the son of Pāṇḍu; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; युद्धदुर्मदाः (yuddha-durmadāḥ) - arrogant (or fiercely proud) in battle;]
(The noble ones and kings of the earth, with delighted chariots of men, many (who were) arrogant in battle, were approached by the son of Pāṇḍu.)

एवं युद्धानि वृत्तानि तत्र तत्र महीपते। अर्जुनस्य महीपालैर्नानादेशनिवासिभिः ॥१४-७२-२६॥
evaṁ yuddhāni vṛttāni tatra tatra mahīpate. arjunasya mahīpālair nānādeśa-nivāsibhiḥ ॥14-72-26॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; युद्धानि (yuddhāni) - battles; वृत्तानि (vṛttāni) - occurred; तत्र तत्र (tatra tatra) - here and there; महीपते (mahīpate) - O king; अर्जुनस्य (arjunasya) - of Arjuna; महीपालैः (mahīpālaiḥ) - by kings; नानादेशनिवासिभिः (nānādeśa-nivāsibhiḥ) - by those dwelling in various countries;]
(Thus battles occurred here and there, O king, of Arjuna, by kings by those dwelling in various countries.)
O king, in this way, battles of Arjuna were fought by kings from various countries in many places. (14-72-26)
यानि तूभयतो राजन्प्रतप्तानि महान्ति च। तानि युद्धानि वक्ष्यामि कौन्तेयस्य तवानघ ॥१४-७२-२७॥
yāni tūbhayato rājan prataptāni mahānti ca। tāni yuddhāni vakṣyāmi kaunteyasya tavānagha॥14-72-27॥
[यानि (yāni) - which (plural neuter); तु (tu) - indeed; उभयतः (ubhayataḥ) - from both sides; राजन् (rājan) - O king; प्रतप्तानि (prataptāni) - ardently contested; scorched; intensely fought; महान्ति (mahānti) - great; च (ca) - and; तानि (tāni) - those; युद्धानि (yuddhāni) - battles; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - I will recount; कौन्तेयस्य (kaunteyasya) - of Kaunteya (Arjuna or son of Kunti); तव (tava) - to you; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one;]
(Which indeed from both sides, O king, were ardently contested and great, those battles I will recount of Kaunteya to you, O sinless one.)
O king, I will recount to you those great and fiercely fought battles from both sides, belonging to Kaunteya, O sinless one. (14-72-27)
