त्रिगर्तैरभवद्युद्धं कृतवैरैः किरीटिनः। महारथसमाज्ञातैर्हतानां पुत्रनप्तृभिः ॥१४-७३-१॥
trigartair abhavad yuddhaṁ kṛtavairaiḥ kirīṭinaḥ। mahāratha-samājñātair hatānāṁ putra-naptṛbhiḥ॥14-73-1॥
[त्रिगर्तैः (trigartaiḥ) - by the Trigartas; अभवत् (abhavat) - there was; युद्धं (yuddhaṁ) - battle; कृतवैरैः (kṛtavairaiḥ) - with those who had enmity; किरीटिनः (kirīṭinaḥ) - of the one having a crown; महारथ-समाज्ञातैः (mahāratha-samājñātaiḥ) - by the illustrious warriors' close kin; हतानां (hatānāṁ) - of those slain; पुत्र-नप्तृभिः (putra-naptṛbhiḥ) - by the sons and grandsons;]
(By the Trigartas, there was a battle with the crown-bearer, with those who had enmity, by the illustrious warriors' close kin, by the sons and grandsons of those slain.)
A battle took place between the crown-wearer and the Trigartas, with the sons and grandsons of slain illustrious warriors, who bore enmity. (14-73-1)
ते समाज्ञाय सम्प्राप्तं यज्ञियं तुरगोत्तमम्। विषयान्ते ततो वीरा दंशिताः पर्यवारयन् ॥१४-७३-२॥
te samājñāya samprāptaṃ yajñiyaṃ turagottamam। viṣayānte tato vīrā daṃśitāḥ paryavārayan ॥14-73-2॥
[ते (te) - they; समाज्ञाय (samājñāya) - having learned; सम्प्राप्तं (samprāptam) - arrived; यज्ञियम् (yajñiyam) - fit-for-sacrifice; तुरगोत्तमम् (turagottamam) - best among horses; विषयान्ते (viṣayānte) - at the border of (their) territory; ततः (tataḥ) - then; वीराः (vīrāḥ) - heroes; दंशिताः (daṃśitāḥ) - armed; पर्यवारयन् (paryavārayan) - surrounded;]
(They, having learned, that the fit-for-sacrifice best among horses had arrived, then at the border of the territory, the armed heroes surrounded.)
Having learned that the best horse for sacrifice had arrived, then the armed heroes surrounded it at the border of their territory. (14-73-2)
रथिनो बद्धतूणीराः सदश्वैः समलङ्कृतैः। परिवार्य हयं राजन्ग्रहीतुं सम्प्रचक्रमुः ॥१४-७३-३॥
rathino baddhatūṇīrāḥ sadaśvaiḥ samalaṅkṛtaiḥ| parivārya hayaṃ rājan grahītuṃ sampracakramuḥ ॥14-73-3॥
[रथिनः (rathinaḥ) - chariot-warriors; बद्धतूणीराः (baddhatūṇīrāḥ) - with fastened quivers; सदश्वैः (sadaśvaiḥ) - with good horses; समलङ्कृतैः (samalaṅkṛtaiḥ) - well-adorned; परिवार्य (parivārya) - having surrounded; हयम् (hayam) - the horse; राजन् (rājan) - O king; ग्रहितुम् (grahītum) - to seize; सम्प्रचक्रमुः (sampracakramuḥ) - they began;]
(Chariot-warriors with fastened quivers, with good horses, well-adorned, having surrounded the horse, O king, to seize, they began.)
O king, the chariot-warriors with fastened quivers, mounted on well-adorned good horses, surrounded the horse and began to seize it. (14-73-3)
ततः किरीटी सञ्चिन्त्य तेषां राज्ञां चिकीर्षितम्। वारयामास तान्वीरान्सान्त्वपूर्वमरिंदमः ॥१४-७३-४॥
tataḥ kirīṭī sañcintya teṣāṃ rājñāṃ cikīrṣitam। vārayāmāsa tān vīrān sāntvapūrvam ariṃdamaḥ ॥14-73-4॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; after that; किरीटी (kirīṭī) - the one wearing a crown; Arjuna; सञ्चिन्त्य (sañcintya) - having considered; having deliberated; तेषां (teṣāṃ) - of them; of those; राज्ञां (rājñāṃ) - of the kings; चिकीर्षितम् (cikīrṣitam) - intended action; what was meant to be done; वारयामास (vārayāmāsa) - he restrained; he held back; तान् (tān) - them; वीरान् (vīrān) - heroes; warriors; सान्त्वपूर्वम् (sāntvapūrvam) - with prior conciliation; soothingly; अरिंदमः (ariṃdamaḥ) - destroyer of enemies; Arjuna;]
(Then, Kirīti, having considered the intended action of those kings, restrained those heroes with prior conciliation, the destroyer of enemies.)
Then Kirīti (Arjuna), after considering the intentions of those kings, gently restrained those heroes—he who is the destroyer of enemies. (14-73-4)
तमनादृत्य ते सर्वे शरैरभ्यहनंस्तदा। तमोरजोभ्यां सञ्छन्नांस्तान्किरीटी न्यवारयत् ॥१४-७३-५॥
tamanādṛtya te sarve śarair abhyahanam̐s tadā। tamorajobhyāṃ sañchannām̐s tān kirīṭī nyavārayat ॥14-73-5॥
[तम् (tam) - him; अनादृत्य (anādṛtya) - without regarding; ते (te) - they; सर्वे (sarve) - all; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows; अभ्यहनन् (abhyahanan) - struck against; तदा (tadā) - then; तमः-रजोभ्याम् (tamo-rajobhyām) - by darkness and dust; सञ्छन्नान् (sañchannān) - covered; तान् (tān) - them; किरीटी (kirīṭī) - Kirīti (Arjuna); न्यवारयत् (nyavārayat) - drove back;]
(Him without regarding, they all with arrows struck against then. By darkness and dust covered them, Kirīti drove back.)
Without regarding him, all of them attacked with arrows at that time. Kirīti (Arjuna) drove back those who had been covered by darkness and dust. (14-73-5)
अब्रवीच्च ततो जिष्णुः प्रहसन्निव भारत। निवर्तध्वमधर्मज्ञाः श्रेयो जीवितमेव वः ॥१४-७३-६॥
abravīc ca tato jiṣṇuḥ prahasann iva bhārata। nivartadhvam adharmajñāḥ śreyo jīvitam eva vaḥ ॥14-73-6॥
[अब्रवीत् च (abravīt ca) - (he) spoke and; ततः (tataḥ) - then; जिष्णुः (jiṣṇuḥ) - the victorious one; प्रहसन् इव (prahasan iva) - as if smiling; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; निवर्तध्वम् (nivartadhvam) - (you all) turn back; अधर्मज्ञाः (adharmajñāḥ) - knowers of unrighteousness; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - better; जीवितम् एव (jīvitam eva) - life indeed; वः (vaḥ) - for you;]
(And then the victorious one spoke, as if smiling, O Bhārata: “Turn back, knowers of unrighteousness; better for you is indeed life.” (14-73-6))
Then the victorious one, as if smiling, said, O Bhārata: “Turn back, you knowers of unrighteousness; living is indeed better for you.” (14-73-6)
स हि वीरः प्रयास्यन्वै धर्मराजेन वारितः। हतबान्धवा न ते पार्थ हन्तव्याः पार्थिवा इति ॥१४-७३-७॥
sa hi vīraḥ prayāsyan vai dharmarājena vāritaḥ। hatabāndhavā na te pārtha hantavyāḥ pārthivā iti॥14-73-7॥
[स (sa) - he; हि (hi) - indeed; वीरः (vīraḥ) - hero; प्रयास्यन् (prayāsyan) - departing; वै (vai) - truly; धर्मराजेन (dharmarājena) - by Dharmarāja; वारितः (vāritaḥ) - restrained; हतबान्धवा (hatabāndhavā) - who have lost their kin; न (na) - not; ते (te) - by you; पार्थ (pārtha) - O Pārtha; हन्तव्याः (hantavyāḥ) - to be slain; पार्थिवा (pārthivāḥ) - kings; इति (iti) - thus;]
(He indeed, the hero, departing, truly, by Dharmarāja was restrained. Who have lost their kin, not by you, O Pārtha, are to be slain, the kings, thus.)
He, the hero, was indeed departing, but was restrained by Dharmarāja, saying: "O Pārtha, those kings who have lost their kin are not to be slain by you." (14-73-7)
स तदा तद्वचः श्रुत्वा धर्मराजस्य धीमतः। तान्निवर्तध्वमित्याह न न्यवर्तन्त चापि ते ॥१४-७३-८॥
sa tadā tadvacaḥ śrutvā dharmarājasya dhīmataḥ। tān nivartadhvam ity āha na nyavartanta cāpi te ॥14-73-8॥

(He then, having heard those words of the wise Dharmarāja, said to them, "Return," thus; but they did not turn back, and they also (remained). (14-73-8))
Then he, having listened to the words of the wise Dharmarāja, told them, "Return"; but they did not return, and they too remained. (14-73-8)
ततस्त्रिगर्तराजानं सूर्यवर्माणमाहवे। वितत्य शरजालेन प्रजहास धनञ्जयः ॥१४-७३-९॥
tatas trigartrarājānaṁ sūryavarmāṇam āhave। vitatya śarajālena prajahāsa dhanañjayaḥ ॥14-73-9॥
[ततः (tatas) - then; त्रिगर्तराजानम् (trigartrarājānam) - the king of the Trigartas; सूर्यवर्माणम् (sūryavarmāṇam) - Sūryavarman; आहवे (āhave) - in battle; वितत्य (vitatya) - having stretched; शरजालेन (śarajālena) - with a net of arrows; प्रजहास (prajahāsa) - smiled at; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhanañjaya (Arjuna);]
(Then the king of the Trigartas, Sūryavarman, in battle, having stretched with a net of arrows, Dhanañjaya smiled at.)
Then, in the battle, Dhanañjaya (Arjuna) smiled at Sūryavarman, the king of the Trigartas, having spread a net of arrows. (14-73-9)
ततस्ते रथघोषेण खुरनेमिस्वनेन च। पूरयन्तो दिशः सर्वा धनञ्जयमुपाद्रवन् ॥१४-७३-१०॥
tataste rathaghoṣeṇa khuranemisvanena ca. pūrayanto diśaḥ sarvā dhanañjayamupādravan ॥14-73-10॥
[ततः (tataḥ) (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) (te) - they; रथघोषेण (rathaghoṣeṇa) (rathaghoṣeṇa) - with the sound of chariots; खुरनेमिस्वनेन (khuranemisvanena) (khuranemisvanena) - with the noise of hoofs and chariot-wheels; च (ca) (ca) - and; पूरयन्तः (pūrayantaḥ) (pūrayantaḥ) - filling; दिशः (diśaḥ) (diśaḥ) - the directions; सर्वा (sarvā) (sarvā) - all; धनञ्जयम् (dhanañjayam) (dhanañjayam) - Arjuna; उपाद्रवन् (upādravan) (upādravan) - approached;]
(Then they, with the sound of chariots and with the noise of hoofs and chariot-wheels, filling all directions, approached Arjuna.)

सूर्यवर्मा ततः पार्थे शराणां नतपर्वणाम्। शतान्यमुञ्चद्राजेन्द्र लघ्वस्त्रमभिदर्शयन् ॥१४-७३-११॥
sūryavarmā tataḥ pārthe śarāṇāṃ nataparvaṇām। śatāny amuñcad rājendra laghv astraṃ abhidarśayan ॥14-73-11॥

(Sūryavarmā then at Pārtha of arrows curved-jointed hundreds loosed O king light weapon showing.)
Sūryavarmā then, O king, loosed hundreds of curved-jointed arrows at Pārtha, displaying a light missile. (14-73-11)
तथैवान्ये महेष्वासा ये तस्यैवानुयायिनः। मुमुचुः शरवर्षाणि धनञ्जयवधैषिणः ॥१४-७३-१२॥
tathaiva anye maheṣvāsā ye tasyaiva anuyāyinaḥ। mumucuḥ śara-varṣāṇi dhanañjaya-vadha-iṣiṇaḥ॥14-73-12॥
[तथा एव (tathā eva) - just so; in the same way; अन्ये (anye) - others; महेष्वासाः (maheṣvāsāḥ) - great archers; ये (ye) - who; तस्य एव (tasya eva) - of him alone; of that very one; अनुयायिनः (anuyāyinaḥ) - followers; मुमुचुः (mumucuḥ) - released; शरवर्षाणि (śara-varṣāṇi) - arrow-showers; धनञ्जय-वध-इषिणः (dhanañjaya-vadha-iṣiṇaḥ) - desiring the slaying of Dhananjaya (Arjuna);]
(Just so, other great archers, who were followers of him alone, desiring the slaying of Dhananjaya, released showers of arrows.)
In the same way, the other great archers, who were his very followers, released showers of arrows, seeking the death of Dhananjaya (Arjuna). (14-73-12)
स ताञ्ज्यापुङ्खनिर्मुक्तैर्बहुभिः सुबहूञ्शरान्। चिच्छेद पाण्डवो राजंस्ते भूमौ न्यपतंस्तदा ॥१४-७३-१३॥
sa tāñ jyāpūṅkha-nirmuktaiḥ bahubhiḥ subahūñ śarān। ciccheda pāṇḍavo rājan te bhūmau nyapatan tadā ॥14-73-13॥
[स (sa) - he; तान् (tān) - them; ज्यापुङ्खनिर्मुक्तैः (jyāpūṅkha-nirmuktaiḥ) - released from bow-strings and feathers; बहुभिः (bahubhiḥ) - with many; सुबहूञ्शरान् (subahūñ śarān) - very many arrows; चिच्छेद (ciccheda) - he cut off; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - Pāṇḍava (the son of Pāṇḍu); राजन् (rājan) - O king; ते (te) - they; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; न्यपतन् (nyapatan) - fell down; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(He, them, with very many arrows released from bow-strings and feathers, cut off; the Pāṇḍava, O king; they fell down on the ground then.)
He, O king, the Pāṇḍava, with very many arrows released from bow-strings, cut them off; they then fell to the ground. (14-73-13)
केतुवर्मा तु तेजस्वी तस्यैवावरजो युवा। युयुधे भ्रातुरर्थाय पाण्डवेन महात्मना ॥१४-७३-१४॥

But Ketuvarma, the brilliant and youthful younger brother of that one, fought for his brother's sake with the great-souled Pāṇḍava. (14-73-14)
तमापतन्तं सम्प्रेक्ष्य केतुवर्माणमाहवे। अभ्यघ्नन्निशितैर्बाणैर्बीभत्सुः परवीरहा ॥१४-७३-१५॥
tam āpatantaṃ samprekṣya ketuvarmāṇam āhave | abhyaghnan niśitaiḥ bāṇaiḥ bībhatsuḥ paravīrahā ||14-73-15||
[तम् (tam) - him; आपतन्तम् (āpatantam) - rushing; सम्प्रेक्ष्य (samprekṣya) - having seen; केतुवर्माणम् (ketuvarmāṇam) - Ketuvarman; आहवे (āhave) - in battle; अभ्यघ्नन् (abhyaghnan) - struck; निशितैः (niśitaiḥ) - with sharp; बाणैः (bāṇaiḥ) - arrows; बीभत्सुः (bībhatsuḥ) - Bibhatsu; परवीरहा (paravīrahā) - destroyer of enemy heroes;]
(Him rushing having seen Ketuvarman in battle struck with sharp arrows Bibhatsu, destroyer of enemy heroes.)
Having seen Ketuvarman rushing in battle, Bibhatsu, the destroyer of enemy heroes, struck him with sharp arrows. (14-73-15)
केतुवर्मण्यभिहते धृतवर्मा महारथः। रथेनाशु समावृत्य शरैर्जिष्णुमवाकिरत् ॥१४-७३-१६॥
ketuvarmaṇy abhihate dhṛtavarmā mahārathaḥ। rathenāśu samāvṛtya śarair jiṣṇum avākirat ॥14-73-16॥
[केतुवर्मणि (ketuvarmaṇi) - in Ketuvarman; अभिहते (abhihate) - when (he was) assailed; धृतवर्मा (dhṛtavarmā) - Dhṛtavarmā; महारथः (mahārathaḥ) - great chariot-warrior; रथेन (rathena) - by chariot; आशु (āśu) - quickly; समावृत्य (samāvṛtya) - having approached; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows; जिष्णुम् (jiṣṇum) - the victorious one; अवाकिरत् (avākirat) - he showered;]
(When Ketuvarman was assailed, Dhṛtavarmā, the great chariot-warrior, quickly having approached by chariot, with arrows, the victorious one he showered.)
When Ketuvarman was attacked, Dhṛtavarmā, the great chariot-warrior, quickly approached by chariot and showered arrows upon the victorious one. (14-73-16)
तस्य तां शीघ्रतामीक्ष्य तुतोषातीव वीर्यवान्। गुडाकेशो महातेजा बालस्य धृतवर्मणः ॥१४-७३-१७॥
tasya tāṃ śīghratām īkṣya tutoṣātīva vīryavān। guḍākeśo mahātejā bālasya dhṛtavarmaṇaḥ॥14-73-17॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; तां (tāṃ) - that; शीघ्रताम् (śīghratām) - swiftness; ईक्ष्य (īkṣya) - having seen; तुतोष (tutoṣa) - was satisfied; अतीव (atīva) - extremely; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - powerful; गुडाकेशः (guḍākeśaḥ) - Guḍākeśa (Arjuna); महत्-तेजा (mahātejā) - of great splendor; बालस्य (bālasya) - of the boy; धृतवर्मणः (dhṛtavarmaṇaḥ) - Dhṛtavarman;]
(Of him that swiftness having seen was satisfied extremely powerful Guḍākeśa of great splendor of the boy Dhṛtavarman.)
Guḍākeśa, the mighty and powerful one, seeing that great swiftness of Dhṛtavarman, the boy, was extremely pleased. (14-73-17)
न संदधानं ददृशे नाददानं च तं तदा। किरन्तमेव स शरान्ददृशे पाकशासनिः ॥१४-७३-१८॥
na saṁdadhānaṁ dadṛśe nādadānaṁ ca taṁ tadā. kirantam eva sa śarān dadṛśe pākaśāsaniḥ ॥14-73-18॥
[न (na) - not; संदधानं (saṁdadhānam) - stringing (the bow); ददृशे (dadṛśe) - he saw; न (na) - not; आददानं (ādadānam) - taking (an arrow); च (ca) - and; तं (taṁ) - him; तदा (tadā) - then; किरन्तम् (kirantam) - showering; एव (eva) - only; स (sa) - he; शरान् (śarān) - arrows; ददृशे (dadṛśe) - he saw; पाकशासनिः (pākaśāsaniḥ) - Indra;]
(Not stringing (the bow) he saw, not taking (an arrow) also him then; but only showering arrows he saw, Indra.)
At that time, Indra saw him neither stringing the bow nor taking up an arrow, but only engaged in showering arrows. (14-73-18)
स तु तं पूजयामास धृतवर्माणमाहवे। मनसा स मुहूर्तं वै रणे समभिहर्षयन् ॥१४-७३-१९॥
sa tu taṃ pūjayāmāsa dhṛtavarmāṇam āhave। manasā sa muhūrtaṃ vai raṇe samabhiharṣayan ॥14-73-19॥
[स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; तं (taṃ) - him; पूजयामास (pūjayāmāsa) - honored; धृतवर्माणम् (dhṛtavarmāṇam) - Dhṛtavarman; आहवे (āhave) - in battle; मनसा (manasā) - with (his) mind; स (sa) - he; मुहूर्तम् (muhūrtam) - for a moment; वै (vai) - indeed; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; समभिहर्षयन् (samabhiharṣayan) - delighting completely;]
(He but him honored Dhṛtavarman in battle; with (his) mind he for a moment indeed in battle delighting completely.)
But he honored Dhṛtavarman in battle; with his mind, he delighted him for a moment in the fight. (14-73-19)
तं पन्नगमिव क्रुद्धं कुरुवीरः स्मयन्निव। प्रीतिपूर्वं महाराज प्राणैर्न व्यपरोपयत् ॥१४-७३-२०॥
taṃ pannagam iva kruddhaṃ kuruvīraḥ smayan n iva। prītipūrvaṃ mahārāja prāṇaiḥ na vyaparopayat॥14-73-20॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; पन्नगम् (pannagam) - serpent; इव (iva) - like; क्रुद्धं (kruddham) - angry; कुरुवीरः (kuruvīraḥ) - the Kuru hero; स्मयन् (smayan) - smiling; इव (iva) - as if; प्रीतिपूर्वं (prītipūrvam) - with affection; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; प्राणैः (prāṇaiḥ) - with life (means); न (na) - not; व्यपरोपयत् (vyaparopayat) - he destroyed;]
(Him, like an angry serpent, the Kuru hero smiling as if, with affection, O great king, with life, did not destroy.)
O great king, the Kuru hero, smiling as if, did not destroy him, who was angry like a serpent, even though he had the power to do so, acting with affection. (14-73-20)
स तथा रक्ष्यमाणो वै पार्थेनामिततेजसा। धृतवर्मा शरं तीक्ष्णं मुमोच विजये तदा ॥१४-७३-२१॥

(He thus being protected indeed by Pārtha of boundless brilliance, Dhṛtavarman a sharp arrow released at Vijaya then.)
Thus, while being protected by Pārtha of boundless brilliance, Dhṛtavarman then released a sharp arrow at Vijaya. (14-73-21)
स तेन विजयस्तूर्णमस्यन्विद्धः करे भृशम्। मुमोच गाण्डीवं दुःखात्तत्पपाताथ भूतले ॥१४-७३-२२॥
sa tena vijayastūrṇam asyan viddhaḥ kare bhṛśam। mumoca gāṇḍīvaṃ duḥkhāt tat papāta atha bhūtale ॥14-73-22॥
[स (sa) - he; तेन (tena) - by him; विजयः (vijayaḥ) - Vijaya (Arjuna); तूर्णम् (tūrṇam) - quickly; अस्यन् (asyan) - while throwing (shooting/projecting); विद्धः (viddhaḥ) - pierced; करे (kare) - in the hand; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - severely; मुमोच (mumoca) - let go; गाण्डीवम् (gāṇḍīvam) - Gāṇḍīva (Arjuna's bow); दुःखात् (duḥkhāt) - from pain; तत् (tat) - that; पपात (papāta) - fell; अथ (atha) - then; भूतले (bhūtale) - on the ground;]
(He, by him, Vijaya (Arjuna), quickly, while shooting, pierced, in the hand, severely, let go the Gāṇḍīva from pain; that then fell on the ground.)
He—Vijaya (Arjuna)—was quickly and severely pierced in the hand by him while shooting, and, due to pain, let go of his Gāṇḍīva bow, which then fell to the ground. (14-73-22)
धनुषः पततस्तस्य सव्यसाचिकराद्विभो। इन्द्रस्येवायुधस्यासीद्रूपं भरतसत्तम ॥१४-७३-२३॥
dhanuṣaḥ patatas tasya savyasācikarād vibho। indrasyevāyudhasyāsīd rūpaṃ bharatasattama ॥14-73-23॥
[धनुषः (dhanuṣaḥ) - of the bow; पततः (patatas) - falling; तस्य (tasya) - his; सव्यसाचिकरात् (savyasācikarāt) - from the hand of Savyasācī (Arjuna); विभो (vibho) - O illustrious one; इन्द्रस्येव (indrasya iva) - like Indra's; आयुधस्य (āyudhasya) - of the weapon; आसीत् (āsīt) - there was; रूपं (rūpaṃ) - the form; भरतसत्तम (bharatasattama) - O best of the Bharatas;]
(Of the bow, falling, his, from the hand of Savyasācī, O illustrious one, like Indra's, of the weapon, there was, the form, O best of the Bharatas.)
O best of the Bharatas, as his bow fell from the hand of Savyasācī, O illustrious one, it appeared just like the weapon of Indra.
तस्मिन्निपतिते दिव्ये महाधनुषि पार्थिव। जहास सस्वनं हासं धृतवर्मा महाहवे ॥१४-७३-२४॥
tasmin nipatite divye mahādhanuṣi pārthiva। jahāsa sāsvanaṃ hāsaṃ dhṛtavarmā mahāhave ॥14-73-24॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; निपतिते (nipatite) - having fallen; दिव्ये (divye) - divine; महाधनुषि (mahādhanuṣi) - great bow; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king; जहास (jahāsa) - laughed; सस्वनं (sāsvanam) - with sound; हासं (hāsaṃ) - laughter; धृतवर्मा (dhṛtavarmā) - Dhritavarma; महाहवे (mahāhave) - in the great battle;]
(In that (tasmin), having fallen (nipatite), divine (divye), on the great bow (mahādhanuṣi), O king (pārthiva), Dhritavarma (dhṛtavarmā) laughed (jahāsa) a laughter (hāsaṃ) with sound (sāsvanam), in the great battle (mahāhave).)
O king, when the divine great bow had fallen there, Dhritavarma laughed aloud in the great battle. (14-73-24)
ततो रोषान्वितो जिष्णुः प्रमृज्य रुधिरं करात्। धनुरादत्त तद्दिव्यं शरवर्षं ववर्ष च ॥१४-७३-२५॥
tato roṣānvito jiṣṇuḥ pramṛjya rudhiraṃ karāt। dhanurādatta taddivyaṃ śaravarṣaṃ vavarṣa ca ॥14-73-25॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; रोषान्वितः (roṣānvitaḥ) - filled with anger; जिष्णुः (jiṣṇuḥ) - the conqueror; प्रमृज्य (pramṛjya) - having wiped; रुधिरम् (rudhiram) - blood; करात् (karāt) - from (his) hand; धनुः (dhanuḥ) - bow; आदत्त (ādatta) - took up; तत् (tat) - that; दिव्यम् (divyam) - divine; शरवर्षम् (śaravarṣam) - rain of arrows; ववर्ष (vavarṣa) - he rained; च (ca) - and;]
(Then, filled with anger, the conqueror, having wiped the blood from (his) hand, took up that divine bow and rained a rain of arrows.)
Then, filled with anger, Jiṣṇu (the conqueror) wiped the blood from his hand, picked up his divine bow, and rained arrows down. (14-73-25)
ततो हलहलाशब्दो दिवस्पृगभवत्तदा। नानाविधानां भूतानां तत्कर्मातीव शंसताम् ॥१४-७३-२६॥
tato halahalāśabdo divaspṛgabhavattadā। nānāvidhānāṃ bhūtānāṃ tatkarmātīva śaṃsatām ॥14-73-26॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; afterwards; हलहलाशब्दः (halahalāśabdaḥ) - roaring sound; tumultuous noise; दिवः-पृक् (divaḥ-pṛk) - which reaches the sky; sky-touching; अभवत् (abhavat) - arose; was; तदा (tadā) - then; at that time; नानाविधानाम् (nānāvidhānām) - of many kinds; of various sorts; भूतानाम् (bhūtānām) - of beings; creatures; तत्-कर्म (tat-karma) - that action; that event; अतीव (atīva) - exceedingly; greatly; शंसताम् (śaṃsatām) - praising; proclaiming; celebrating;]
(Then, a roaring sound, sky-touching, arose at that time. Of various beings exceedingly praising that action.)
Then, a tumultuous sky-reaching roar arose, as beings of many kinds highly praised that event. (14-73-26)
ततः सम्प्रेक्ष्य तं क्रुद्धं कालान्तकयमोपमम्। जिष्णुं त्रैगर्तका योधास्त्वरिताः पर्यवारयन् ॥१४-७३-२७॥
tataḥ samprekṣya taṃ kruddhaṃ kālāntakayamopamam। jiṣṇuṃ traigartakā yodhāstvaritāḥ paryavārayan ॥14-73-27॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सम्प्रेक्ष्य (samprekṣya) - having seen; तं (taṃ) - him; क्रुद्धं (kruddhaṃ) - angry; कालान्तकयमोपमम् (kālāntaka-yamopamam) - like Kāla (Time), Antaka (Death), and Yama (the god of death); जिष्णुं (jiṣṇuṃ) - the victorious one; त्रैगर्तका (traigartakāḥ) - the Traigarta warriors; योधाः (yodhāḥ) - warriors; त्वरिताः (tvaritāḥ) - swift; पर्यवारयन् (paryavārayan) - surrounded;]
(Then, having seen him angry, like Kāla, Antaka, and Yama, the victorious one, the Traigarta warriors, swift, surrounded.)
Then, seeing the angry and victorious one, who was like Kāla, Antaka, and Yama, the swift Traigarta warriors surrounded him. (14-73-27)
अभिसृत्य परीप्सार्थं ततस्ते धृतवर्मणः। परिवव्रुर्गुडाकेशं तत्राक्रुध्यद्धनञ्जयः ॥१४-७३-२८॥
abhisṛtya parīpsārthaṃ tataste dhṛtavarmaṇaḥ। parivavrur guḍākeśaṃ tatrākrudhyad dhanañjayaḥ ॥14-73-28॥
[अभिसृत्य (abhisṛtya) - having approached; परीप्सार्थं (parīpsārtham) - with the purpose of wishing to obtain; ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - they; धृतवर्मणः (dhṛtavarmaṇaḥ) - wearing armor; परिवव्रु (parivavrur) - circled around; गुडाकेशं (guḍākeśam) - Guḍākeśa (Arjuna); तत्र (tatra) - there; अक्रुध्यत् (akrudhyat) - became angry; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhanajaya (Arjuna);]
(Having approached for the purpose of desiring to obtain, then they, wearing armor, circled around Guḍākeśa; there Dhanaṅjaya became angry.)
Then, having approached with the intent to claim, those armored warriors surrounded Guḍākeśa (Arjuna); there Dhanaṅjaya became angry. (14-73-28)
ततो योधाञ्जघानाशु तेषां स दश चाष्ट च। महेन्द्रवज्रप्रतिमैरायसैर्निशितैः शरैः ॥१४-७३-२९॥
tato yodhāñjaghānāśu teṣāṃ sa daśa cāṣṭa ca। mahendravajrapratimairāyasairniśitaiḥ śaraiḥ ॥14-73-29॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; योधान् (yodhān) - warriors (accusative plural); जघान (jaghāna) - slew; आशु (āśu) - quickly; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; सः (saḥ) - he; दश (daśa) - ten; च (ca) - and; अष्ट (aṣṭa) - eight; च (ca) - and; महेन्द्रवज्रप्रतिमैः (mahendravajrapratimaiḥ) - resembling the great Indra's thunderbolt; आयसैः (āyasaiḥ) - iron; निशितैः (niśitaiḥ) - sharp; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - arrows;]
(Then the warriors he slew quickly of them, ten and eight, with iron sharp arrows resembling the great Indra's thunderbolt.)
Then he quickly slew eighteen of those warriors with sharp iron arrows that resembled the mighty Indra's thunderbolt. (14-73-29)
तांस्तु प्रभग्नान्सम्प्रेक्ष्य त्वरमाणो धनञ्जयः। शरैराशीविषाकारैर्जघान स्वनवद्धसन् ॥१४-७३-३०॥
tāṃs tu prabhagnān samprekṣya tvaramāṇo dhanañjayaḥ। śarair āśīviṣākārair jaghāna svanavad dhan asan ॥14-73-30॥
[तांस् (tāṃs) - them; तु (tu) - but; प्रभग्नान् (prabhagnān) - broken; shattered; सम्प्रेक्ष्य (samprekṣya) - having seen; observing; त्वरमाणः (tvaramāṇaḥ) - quickly acting; hastening; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhananjaya (Arjuna); शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows; आशीविषाकारैः (āśīviṣākāraiḥ) - having the shape of serpents; जघान (jaghāna) - he struck; he killed; स्वनवत् (svanavat) - resounding; sounding aloud; धन (dhana) - bow; वद्धसन् (vaddhasan) - with (its) string; stringed;]
(But Dhananjaya, quickly acting, having seen them broken, with arrows having the shape of serpents, struck (them), resounding with (his) stringed bow.)
But Dhananjaya (Arjuna), seeing them broken, hastily struck them with serpent-shaped arrows, sounding aloud with his bowstring. (14-73-30)
ते भग्नमनसः सर्वे त्रैगर्तकमहारथाः। दिशो विदुद्रुवुः सर्वा धनञ्जयशरार्दिताः ॥१४-७३-३१॥
te bhagnamanasaḥ sarve traigartakamahārathāḥ। diśo vidudruvuḥ sarvā dhanañjayaśarārditāḥ ॥14-73-31॥
[ते (te) - they; भग्नमनसः (bhagnamanasaḥ) - with broken spirits; सर्वे (sarve) - all; त्रैगर्तकमहारथाः (traigartakamahārathāḥ) - the great warriors of the Trigarta clan; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; विदुद्रुवुः (vidudruvuḥ) - fled away; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; धनञ्जयशरार्दिताः (dhanañjayaśarārditāḥ) - stricken by the arrows of Dhananjaya;]
(They, with broken spirits, all the great warriors of the Trigarta clan, fled in all directions, stricken by the arrows of Dhananjaya.)
All the great chariot-warriors of the Trigarta clan, their spirits broken and wounded by Dhananjaya's arrows, fled in every direction. (14-73-31)
त ऊचुः पुरुषव्याघ्रं संशप्तकनिषूदनम्। तव स्म किङ्कराः सर्वे सर्वे च वशगास्तव ॥१४-७३-३२॥
ta ūcuḥ puruṣavyāghram saṃśaptakaniṣūdanam। tava sma kiṅkarāḥ sarve sarve ca vaśagās tava ॥14-73-32॥
[त (ta) - they; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said; पुरुषव्याघ्रम् (puruṣavyāghram) - tiger among men; संशप्तकनिषूदनम् (saṃśaptakaniṣūdanam) - destroyer of the Saṃśaptakas; तव (tava) - your; स्म (sma) - indeed; किङ्कराः (kiṅkarāḥ) - servants; सर्वे (sarve) - all; सर्वे (sarve) - all; च (ca) - and; वशगाः (vaśagāḥ) - under (your) control; तव (tava) - your;]
(They said, "O tiger among men, destroyer of the Saṃśaptakas, indeed all are your servants, all are under your control, and all are yours.")
They said, "O tiger among men, destroyer of the Saṃśaptakas, all of us are your servants, and all are under your control." (14-73-32)
आज्ञापयस्व नः पार्थ प्रह्वान्प्रेष्यानवस्थितान्। करिष्यामः प्रियं सर्वं तव कौरवनन्दन ॥१४-७३-३३॥
ājñāpayasva naḥ pārtha prahvān preṣyān avasthitān। kariṣyāmaḥ priyaṃ sarvaṃ tava kaurava-nandana॥14-73-33॥
[आज्ञापयस्व (ājñāpayasva) - command; (give your order;) नः (naḥ) - to us; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pṛthā; प्रह्वान् (prahvān) - humble; प्रेष्यान् (preṣyān) - servants; अवस्थितान् (avasthitān) - present; (who are standing before you;) करिष्यामः (kariṣyāmaḥ) - we shall do; प्रियं (priyaṃ) - that which is pleasing; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; तव (tava) - your; कौरवनन्दन (kaurava-nandana) - O delight of the Kauravas;]
(Command to us, O Pārtha, humble servants present. We shall do all that is pleasing, your, O delight of the Kauravas.)
O Pārtha, command us, your humble servants who stand before you. We shall carry out all that is pleasing to you, O delight of the Kauravas. (14-73-33)
एतदाज्ञाय वचनं सर्वांस्तानब्रवीत्तदा। जीवितं रक्षत नृपाः शासनं गृह्यतामिति ॥१४-७३-३४॥
etadājñāya vacanaṃ sarvāṃstānabravīttadā। jīvitaṃ rakṣata nṛpāḥ śāsanaṃ gṛhyatāmiti ॥14-73-34॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; आज्ञाय (ājñāya) - having understood; वचनम् (vacanam) - statement; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; तान् (tān) - them; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; तदा (tadā) - then; जीवितम् (jīvitam) - life; रक्षत (rakṣata) - (you all) protect; नृपाः (nṛpāḥ) - kings; शासनम् (śāsanam) - command; गृह्यताम् (gṛhyatām) - let it be accepted; इति (iti) - thus;]
(Having understood this statement, then he said to all of them: "Protect life, O kings; let the command be accepted," thus.)
Having heard this statement, he then said to all of them: "Preserve life, O kings; accept the command." (14-73-34)
