प्राग्ज्योतिषमथाभ्येत्य व्यचरत्स हयोत्तमः। भगदत्तात्मजस्तत्र निर्ययौ रणकर्कशः ॥१४-७४-१॥
prāgjyotiṣam athābhyetya vyacaratsa hayottamaḥ। bhagadattātmajastatra niryayau raṇakarkaśaḥ ॥14-74-1॥

स हयं पाण्डुपुत्रस्य विषयान्तमुपागतम्। युयुधे भरतश्रेष्ठ वज्रदत्तो महीपतिः ॥१४-७४-२॥
sa ha yaṃ pāṇḍuputrasya viṣayāntam upāgatam। yuyudhe bharataśreṣṭha vajradatto mahīpatiḥ ॥14-74-2॥

सोऽभिनिर्याय नगराद्भगदत्तसुतो नृपः। अश्वमायान्तमुन्मथ्य नगराभिमुखो ययौ ॥१४-७४-३॥
so'bhinir yāya nagarād bhagadattasuto nṛpaḥ। aśvam āyāntam unmathya nagarābhimukho yayau ॥14-74-3॥

Having departed from the city, the king, son of Bhagadatta, overcame the approaching horse and went toward the city. (14-74-3)
तमालक्ष्य महाबाहुः कुरूणामृषभस्तदा। गाण्डीवं विक्षिपंस्तूर्णं सहसा समुपाद्रवत् ॥१४-७४-४॥
tam ālakṣya mahābāhuḥ kurūṇām ṛṣabhas tadā। gāṇḍīvaṃ vikṣipan tūrṇaṃ sahasā samupādravat ॥14-74-4॥

Then, the great-armed chief of the Kurus, having seen him, suddenly and swiftly advanced, brandishing his Gāṇḍīva bow. (14-74-4)
ततो गाण्डीवनिर्मुक्तैरिषुभिर्मोहितो नृपः। हयमुत्सृज्य तं वीरस्ततः पार्थमुपाद्रवत् ॥१४-७४-५॥
tato gāṇḍīvanirmuktair iṣubhir mohitō nṛpaḥ। hayam utsṛjya taṃ vīras tataḥ pārtham upādravat ॥14-74-5॥

पुनः प्रविश्य नगरं दंशितः स नृपोत्तमः। आरुह्य नागप्रवरं निर्ययौ युद्धकाङ्क्षया ॥१४-७४-६॥

Having been bitten, that best of kings again entered the city, then, mounting the prime elephant, he set out eager for battle. (14-74-6)
पाण्डुरेणातपत्रेण ध्रियमाणेन मूर्धनि। दोधूयता चामरेण श्वेतेन च महारथः ॥१४-७४-७॥
pāṇḍureṇātapatreṇa dhriyamāṇena mūrdhani। dodhūyatā cāmareṇa śvetena ca mahārathaḥ ॥14-74-7॥

ततः पार्थं समासाद्य पाण्डवानां महारथम्। आह्वयामास कौरव्यं बाल्यान्मोहाच्च संयुगे ॥१४-७४-८॥
tataḥ pārthaṃ samāsādya pāṇḍavānāṃ mahāratham। āhvayāmāsa kauravyaṃ bālyān-mohāc ca saṃyuge ॥14-74-8॥

स वारणं नगप्रख्यं प्रभिन्नकरटामुखम्। प्रेषयामास सङ्क्रुद्धस्ततः श्वेतहयं प्रति ॥१४-७४-९॥
sa vāraṇam nagaprakhyam prabhinnakaraṭāmukham। preṣayāmāsa saṅkruddhas tataḥ śvetahayaṃ prati॥14-74-9॥

विक्षरन्तं यथा मेघं परवारणवारणम्। शास्त्रवत्कल्पितं सङ्ख्ये त्रिसाहं युद्धदुर्मदम् ॥१४-७४-१०॥
vikṣarantaṃ yathā meghaṃ paravāraṇavāraṇam। śāstravat kalpitaṃ saṅkhye trisāhaṃ yuddha-durmadam॥14-74-10॥

Like a cloud flowing, the enemy-defending elephant—arranged according to scripture, possessed of triple might and full of battle-arrogance—in the battle. (14-74-10)
प्रचोद्यमानः स गजस्तेन राज्ञा महाबलः। तदाङ्कुशेन विबभावुत्पतिष्यन्निवाम्बरम् ॥१४-७४-११॥
pracodyamānaḥ sa gajastena rājñā mahābalaḥ। tadāṅkuśena vibhāvutpatiṣyannivāmbaram॥14-74-11॥

That very strong elephant, being impelled by the king with that goad, seemed as if about to leap up into the sky. (14-74-11)
तमापतन्तं सम्प्रेक्ष्य क्रुद्धो राजन्धनञ्जयः। भूमिष्ठो वारणगतं योधयामास भारत ॥१४-७४-१२॥
tam āpatantaṃ samprekṣya kruddho rājan dhanañjayaḥ। bhūmi-sthaḥ vāraṇa-gataṃ yodhayām āsa bhārata॥14-74-12॥

Seeing him advancing, Dhanañjaya, angered, O king, standing on the ground, began to fight with the one mounted on the elephant, O Bhārata. (14-74-12)
वज्रदत्तस्तु सङ्क्रुद्धो मुमोचाशु धनञ्जये। तोमरानग्निसङ्काशाञ्शलभानिव वेगितान् ॥१४-७४-१३॥
vajradattastu saṅkruddho mumocāśu dhanañjaye। tomarān agnisaṅkāśāṁś śalabhān iva vegitān ॥14-74-13॥

अर्जुनस्तानसम्प्राप्तान्गाण्डीवप्रेषितैः शरैः। द्विधा त्रिधा च चिच्छेद ख एव खगमैस्तदा ॥१४-७४-१४॥

Arjuna then cut those who had approached with arrows shot from his Gāṇḍīva bow into two and three pieces in the very sky itself with his swift-flying arrows. (14-74-14)
स तान्दृष्ट्वा तथा छिन्नांस्तोमरान्भगदत्तजः। इषूनसक्तांस्त्वरितः प्राहिणोत्पाण्डवं प्रति ॥१४-७४-१५॥
sa tāndṛṣṭvā tathā chinnāṃstomarānbhagadattajaḥ। iṣūnasaktāṃstvaritaḥ prāhiṇotpāṇḍavaṃ prati ॥14-74-15॥

(He, having seen those javelins of his thus broken, the son of Bhagadatta quickly sent unattached arrows towards the Pāṇḍava.)
Seeing his javelins thus broken, the son of Bhagadatta quickly shot fresh arrows at the Pāṇḍava. (14-74-15)
ततोऽर्जुनस्तूर्णतरं रुक्मपुङ्खानजिह्मगान्। प्रेषयामास सङ्क्रुद्धो भगदत्तात्मजं प्रति ॥१४-७४-१६॥
tato 'rjunas tūrṇataraṃ rukmapuṅkhān ajihmagān। preṣayām āsa saṅkruddho bhagadattātmajaṃ prati ॥14-74-16॥

Then Arjuna, greatly enraged, swiftly shot golden-feathered, straight-flying arrows at the son of Bhagadatta. (14-74-16)
स तैर्विद्धो महातेजा वज्रदत्तो महाहवे। भृशाहतः पपातोर्व्यां न त्वेनमजहात्स्मृतिः ॥१४-७४-१७॥
sa tairviddho mahātejā vajradatto mahāhave। bhṛśāhataḥ papātorvyāṃ na tvenamajahātsmṛtiḥ ॥14-74-17॥

ततः स पुनरारुह्य वारणप्रवरं रणे। अव्यग्रः प्रेषयामास जयार्थी विजयं प्रति ॥१४-७४-१८॥
tataḥ sa punar āruhya vāraṇapravaraṃ raṇe। avyagraḥ preṣayāmāsa jayārthī vijayaṃ prati॥14-74-18॥

तस्मै बाणांस्ततो जिष्णुर्निर्मुक्ताशीविषोपमान्। प्रेषयामास सङ्क्रुद्धो ज्वलितानिव पावकान् ॥१४-७४-१९॥
tasmai bāṇāṁs tato jiṣṇur nirmuktāśīviṣopamān। preṣayāmāsa saṅkruddho jvalitān iva pāvakān ॥14-74-19॥

स तैर्विद्धो महानागो विस्रवन्रुधिरं बभौ। हिमवानिव शैलेन्द्रो बहुप्रस्रवणस्तदा ॥१४-७४-२०॥
sa tair viddhaḥ mahānāgaḥ visravan rudhiraṃ babhau। himavān iva śailendraḥ bahu-prasravaṇaḥ tadā ॥14-74-20॥

Pierced by them, the great elephant appeared, with blood flowing, just like the Himalaya, the king of mountains, pouring forth many streams at that time. (14-74-20)
