(By the Sindhus, there was a battle then with that crowned one; O great king, by the remaining (ones) after being slain, and also by the sons of the slain.)
Then there was a battle between the Sindhus and that crowned one (Arjuna). O great king, it was fought by the survivors as well as by the sons of those who had been slain. (14-76-1)
तेऽवतीर्णमुपश्रुत्य विषयं श्वेतवाहनम्। प्रत्युद्ययुरमृष्यन्तो राजानः पाण्डवर्षभम् ॥१४-७६-२॥
te'vatīrṇam upaśrutya viṣayaṃ śvetavāhanam। pratyudyayur amṛṣyanto rājānaḥ pāṇḍavarṣabham॥14-76-2॥

(They, having heard that Śvetavāhana had descended into their territory, the kings, not tolerating, went forth to meet the bull among the Pāṇḍavas.)
Hearing that Śvetavāhana (Arjuna) had entered their territory, the indignant kings went out to confront the foremost of the Pāṇḍavas. (14-76-2)
अश्वं च तं परामृश्य विषयान्ते विषोपमाः। न भयं चक्रिरे पार्थाद्भीमसेनादनन्तरात् ॥१४-७६-३॥
aśvaṃ ca taṃ parāmṛśya viṣayānte viṣopamāḥ। na bhayaṃ cakrire pārthādbhīmasenādanantarāt ॥14-76-3॥

तेऽविदूराद्धनुष्पाणिं यज्ञियस्य हयस्य च। बीभत्सुं प्रत्यपद्यन्त पदातिनमवस्थितम् ॥१४-७६-४॥
te'avidūrāddhanuṣpāṇiṁ yajñiyasya hayasya ca। bībhatsuṁ pratyapadyanta padātinamavasthitam ॥14-76-4॥

(They, from not far, bearing a bow in hand, of yajñiya, of the horse and Bībhatsu (Arjuna), approached the foot-soldier standing.)

ततस्ते तु महावीर्या राजानः पर्यवारयन्। जिगीषन्तो नरव्याघ्राः पूर्वं विनिकृता युधि ॥१४-७६-५॥

ते नामान्यथ गोत्राणि कर्माणि विविधानि च। कीर्तयन्तस्तदा पार्थं शरवर्षैरवाकिरन् ॥१४-७६-६॥

ते किरन्तः शरांस्तीक्ष्णान्वारणेन्द्रनिवारणान्। रणे जयमभीप्सन्तः कौन्तेयं पर्यवारयन् ॥१४-७६-७॥

ते तमाजघ्निरे वीरं निवातकवचान्तकम्। संशप्तकनिहन्तारं हन्तारं सैन्धवस्य च ॥१४-७६-९॥

ततः पर्जन्यवत्सर्वे शरवृष्टिमवासृजन्। तैः कीर्णः शुशुभे पार्थो रविर्मेघान्तरे यथा ॥१४-७६-१२॥

ततो हाहाकृतं सर्वं कौन्तेये शरपीडिते। त्रैलोक्यमभवद्राजन्रविश्चासीद्रजोरुणः ॥१४-७६-१४॥
tato hāhākṛtaṃ sarvaṃ kaunteye śarapīḍite। trailokyam abhavad rājan ravaś cāsīd rajoruṇaḥ ॥14-76-14॥

(Thereupon, ‘ha-ha’ uproar, all, in the son of Kunti, being afflicted by arrows, the three worlds became; O king; sound also arose; dust reddened.)
Thereupon, when the son of Kunti was afflicted by arrows, an uproar of ‘ha-ha’ arose everywhere. O king, sound resounded across the three worlds, and the dust became reddened. (14-76-14)
ततो ववौ महाराज मारुतो रोमहर्षणः। राहुरग्रसदादित्यं युगपत्सोममेव च ॥१४-७६-१५॥
tato vavau mahārāja māruto romaharṣaṇaḥ। rāhur agrasat ādityaṃ yugapat somam eva ca॥ 14-76-15॥

उल्काश्च जघ्निरे सूर्यं विकीर्यन्त्यः समन्ततः। वेपथुश्चाभवद्राजन्कैलासस्य महागिरेः ॥१४-७६-१६॥
ulkāś ca jaghnire sūryaṃ vikīryantyaḥ samantataḥ. vepathuś cābhavad rājan kailāsasya mahāgireḥ ॥14-76-16॥

मुमुचुश्चास्रमत्युष्णं दुःखशोकसमन्विताः। सप्तर्षयो जातभयास्तथा देवर्षयोऽपि च ॥१४-७६-१७॥
mumucuś cā'sram aty-uṣṇaṃ duḥkha-śoka-samanvitāḥ| saptarṣayo jāta-bhayās tathā devarṣayo'pi ca ॥14-76-17॥

शशश्चाशु विनिर्भिद्य मण्डलं शशिनोऽपतत्। विपरीतस्तदा राजंस्तस्मिन्नुत्पातलक्षणे ॥१४-७६-१८॥
śaśaś cāśu vinirbhidya maṇḍalaṃ śaśino’patat. viparītaḥ tadā rājan tasminnutpāta lakṣaṇe ॥14-76-18॥

रासभारुणसङ्काशा धनुष्मन्तः सविद्युतः। आवृत्य गगनं मेघा मुमुचुर्मांसशोणितम् ॥१४-७६-१९॥
rāsabhāruṇasaṅkāśā dhanuṣmantaḥ savidyutaḥ। āvṛtya gaganaṃ meghā mumucur māṃsaśoṇitam ॥14-76-19॥

एवमासीत्तदा वीरे शरवर्षाभिसंवृते। लोकेऽस्मिन्भरतश्रेष्ठ तदद्भुतमिवाभवत् ॥१४-७६-२०॥

तस्य तेनावकीर्णस्य शरजालेन सर्वशः। मोहात्पपात गाण्डीवमावापश्च करादपि ॥१४-७६-२१॥
tasya tenāvakīrṇasya śarajālena sarvaśaḥ। mohātpapāta gāṇḍīvamāvāpaśca karādapi ॥14-76-21॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; तेन (tena) - by that; अवकीर्णस्य (avakīrṇasya) - being covered; शरजालेन (śarajālena) - by a shower of arrows; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - entirely; मोहात् (mohāt) - from delusion; पपात (papāta) - fell; गाण्डीवम् (gāṇḍīvam) - the Gandiva (bow); आवापः (āvāpaḥ) - the quiver; च (ca) - and; करात् (karāt) - from the hand; अपि (api) - even;]
(Of him, by that, being covered by a shower of arrows, entirely, from delusion, fell the Gandiva and the quiver even from the hand.)
Because he was entirely covered by that shower of arrows, his Gandiva bow and even the quiver fell from his hand due to delusion. (14-76-21)
तस्मिन्मोहमनुप्राप्ते शरजालं महत्तरम्। सैन्धवा मुमुचुस्तूर्णं गतसत्त्वे महारथे ॥१४-७६-२२॥
tasmin mohām anuprāpte śarajālaṃ mahattaram। saindhavā mumucu stūrṇaṃ gatasattve mahārathe ॥14-76-22॥

(When in that delusion had arrived, very great volley of arrows the Sindhus released quickly when the life had departed in the great chariot-warrior.)
When that delusion had set in, the Sindhus swiftly released a very great volley of arrows upon the great chariot-warrior, whose life had departed. (14-76-22)
ततो मोहसमापन्नं ज्ञात्वा पार्थं दिवौकसः। सर्वे वित्रस्तमनसस्तस्य शान्तिपराभवन् ॥१४-७६-२३॥
tato mohasamāpannaṃ jñātvā pārthaṃ divaukasaḥ। sarve vitrastamanasastasya śāntiparābhavan ॥14-76-23॥

(Then, knowing Pārtha overcome by delusion, the celestials, all with frightened minds, became eager for peace.)
Then, knowing that Arjuna had been overcome by delusion, all the celestials, whose minds were fearful, became devoted to seeking peace. (14-76-23)
ततो देवर्षयः सर्वे तथा सप्तर्षयोऽपि च। ब्रह्मर्षयश्च विजयं जेपुः पार्थस्य धीमतः ॥१४-७६-२४॥
tato devarṣayaḥ sarve tathā saptaṛṣayo'pi ca. brahmarṣayaś ca vijayaṃ jepuḥ pārthasya dhīmataḥ ॥14-76-24॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; देवर्षयः (devarṣayaḥ) - divine sages; सर्वे (sarve) - all; तथा (tathā) - likewise; सप्तर्षयः (saptaṛṣayaḥ) - seven sages; अपि (api) - also; च (ca) - and; ब्रह्मर्षयः (brahmarṣayaḥ) - brahma-sages; च (ca) - and; विजयम् (vijayam) - victory; जेपुः (jepuḥ) - chanted; पार्थस्य (pārthasya) - of Pārtha; धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - the wise;]
(Then all the divine sages, likewise also the seven sages and the brahma-sages, chanted victory of wise Pārtha.)

ततः प्रदीपिते देवैः पार्थतेजसि पार्थिव। तस्थावचलवद्धीमान्सङ्ग्रामे परमास्त्रवित् ॥१४-७६-२५॥
tataḥ pradīpite devaiḥ pārtha-tejasi pārthiva। tasthāv acala-vad dhīmān saṅgrāme paramāstra-vit ॥14-76-25॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रदीपिते (pradīpite) - having been illumined; देवैः (devaiḥ) - by the gods; पार्थतेजसि (pārtha-tejasi) - by the brilliance of Pārtha; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king; तस्थौ (tasthau) - stood; अचलवत् (acala-vat) - like a mountain; धीमान् (dhīmān) - wise; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; परमास्त्रवित् (paramāstra-vit) - knower of supreme weapons;]
(Then, having been illumined by the gods by the brilliance of Pārtha, O king, the wise knower of supreme weapons stood in battle like a mountain.)
O king, then, when the brilliance of Pārtha was illumined by the gods, the wise knower of supreme weapons stood firmly in battle like a mountain. (14-76-25)
विचकर्ष धनुर्दिव्यं ततः कौरवनन्दनः। यन्त्रस्येवेह शब्दोऽभून्महांस्तस्य पुनः पुनः ॥१४-७६-२६॥
vicakarṣa dhanurdivyaṁ tataḥ kauravanandanaḥ। yantrasyeveha śabdo'bhūnmahāṁstasya punaḥ punaḥ ॥14-76-26॥
[विचकर्ष (vicakarṣa) - drew; (he) pulled; धनुर्दिव्यं (dhanurdivyaṁ) - divine bow; ततः (tataḥ) - then; कौरवनन्दनः (kauravanandanaḥ) - descendant of the Kauravas; यन्त्रस्येव (yantrasyeva) - like a machine; इह (iha) - here; शब्दः (śabdaḥ) - sound; अभूत् (abhūt) - arose; महान् (mahān) - great; तस्य (tasya) - of it (the bow); पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again;]
(Drew divine bow then descendant of the Kauravas. Like a machine here sound arose great of it again and again.)
Then the descendant of the Kauravas drew the divine bow. Again and again, a great sound, like that of a machine, arose from it here. (14-76-26)
ततः स शरवर्षाणि प्रत्यमित्रान्प्रति प्रभुः। ववर्ष धनुषा पार्थो वर्षाणीव सुरेश्वरः ॥१४-७६-२७॥
tataḥ sa śaravarṣāṇi pratyamitrānprati prabhuḥ। vavarṣa dhanuṣā pārtho varṣāṇīva sureśvaraḥ ॥14-76-27॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; शरवर्षाणि (śaravarṣāṇi) - arrow-showers; प्रत्य (prati) - towards; अमित्रान् (amitrān) - enemies; प्रति (prati) - towards; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord; ववर्ष (vavarṣa) - he showered; धनुषा (dhanuṣā) - with the bow; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha (Arjuna); वर्षाणि (varṣāṇi) - rains; इव (iva) - like; सुरेश्वरः (sureśvaraḥ) - lord of the gods (Indra);]
(Then he, the lord, showered showers of arrows with the bow at the enemies, Pārtha, like the lord of the gods (Indra) (showers rains).)
Then Pārtha (Arjuna), the lord, showered volleys of arrows at his enemies with his bow, just as the lord of the gods (Indra) pours down rains. (14-76-27)
ततस्ते सैन्धवा योधाः सर्व एव सराजकाः। नादृश्यन्त शरैः कीर्णाः शलभैरिव पावकाः ॥१४-७६-२८॥
tataste saindhavā yodhāḥ sarva eva sarājakāḥ। nādṛśyanta śaraiḥ kīrṇāḥ śalabhairiva pāvakāḥ ॥14-76-28॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - they; सैन्धवा (saindhavāḥ) - the Sindhu warriors; योधाः (yodhāḥ) - warriors; सर्वः (sarvaḥ) - all; एव (eva) - indeed; सराजकाः (sarājakāḥ) - with their kings; न (na) - not; अदृश्यन्त (adṛśyanta) - were seen; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - by arrows; कीर्णाः (kīrṇāḥ) - covered; शलभैः (śalabhaiḥ) - by moths; इव (iva) - like; पावकाः (pāvakāḥ) - fires;]
(Then they, the Sindhu warriors, all indeed, with their kings, were not seen, covered by arrows, like fires by moths.)
Then all those Sindhu warriors, along with their kings, were not to be seen, covered with arrows, like fires (concealed) by swarms of moths. (14-76-28)
तस्य शब्देन वित्रेसुर्भयार्ताश्च विदुद्रुवुः। मुमुचुश्चाश्रु शोकार्ताः सुषुपुश्चापि सैन्धवाः ॥१४-७६-२९॥
tasya śabdena vitresur bhayārtāś ca vidudruvuḥ. mumucuś cāśru śokārtāḥ suṣupuś cāpi saindhavāḥ ॥14-76-29॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of his; शब्देन (śabdena) - by (the) sound; वित्रेसुः (vitresuḥ) - became frightened; भयार्ताः (bhayārtāḥ) - distressed by fear; च (ca) - and; विदुद्रुवुः (vidudruvuḥ) - ran away; मुमुचुः (mumucuḥ) - shed; च (ca) - and; आश्रु (aśru) - tears; शोकार्ताः (śokārtāḥ) - afflicted by grief; सुषुपुः (suṣupuḥ) - fell down (unconscious); च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; सैन्धवाः (saindhavāḥ) - the Sindhu horses;]
(Of his by (the) sound, became frightened, those distressed by fear and ran away; and shed tears, those afflicted by grief, fell down (unconscious) and also the Sindhu horses.)
Frightened by his sound, those distressed by fear ran away; some of the Sindhu horses, afflicted by grief, shed tears, and some even fell down unconscious. (14-76-29)
तांस्तु सर्वान्नरश्रेष्ठः सर्वतो विचरन्बली। अलातचक्रवद्राजञ्शरजालैः समर्पयत् ॥१४-७६-३०॥
tāṃs tu sarvān naraśreṣṭhaḥ sarvato vicaran balī. alātacakravad rājañ śarajālaiḥ samarpayat ॥14-76-30॥
[तांस् (tāṃs) - those (them); तु (tu) - but; indeed; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; नरश्रेष्ठः (naraśreṣṭhaḥ) - best of men; distinguished man; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - on all sides; everywhere; विचरन् (vicaran) - moving about; roaming; बली (balī) - strong; powerful; अलातचक्रवत् (alātacakravat) - like the revolving firebrand (spinning disc of fire); राजन् (rājan) - O king; शरजालैः (śarajālaiḥ) - with volleys of arrows; with showers of arrows; समर्पयत् (samarpayat) - he delivered; he discharged;]
(But the best of men, strong, moving everywhere on all sides, O king, delivered volleys of arrows upon all of them like a revolving firebrand.)
But the best of men, powerful and moving everywhere on all sides, O king, assailed all of them with volleys of arrows just like a revolving wheel of fire. (14-76-30)
तदिन्द्रजालप्रतिमं बाणजालममित्रहा। व्यसृजद्दिक्षु सर्वासु महेन्द्र इव वज्रभृत् ॥१४-७६-३१॥
tad indrajāla-pratimaṃ bāṇa-jālam amitra-hā। vyasṛjat dikṣu sarvāsu mahendra iva vajra-bhṛt ॥14-76-31॥
[तत् (tat) - that; इन्द्रजालप्रतिमम् (indrajāla-pratimam) - like a magical illusion; बाणजालम् (bāṇa-jālam) - network of arrows; अमित्रहा (amitra-hā) - destroyer of enemies; व्यसृजत् (vyasṛjat) - released; दिक्षु (dikṣu) - in the directions; सर्वासु (sarvāsu) - in all; महेन्द्रः (mahendraḥ) - the great Indra; इव (iva) - like; वज्रभृत् (vajra-bhṛt) - wielder of the thunderbolt;]
(That illusion-like network of arrows, the destroyer of enemies, released in all directions, the great Indra like wielder of the thunderbolt.)
He, the destroyer of enemies, released that network of arrows, resembling a magical illusion, in all directions just like Mahendra (Indra), the wielder of the thunderbolt. (14-76-31)
मेघजालनिभं सैन्यं विदार्य स रविप्रभः। विबभौ कौरवश्रेष्ठः शरदीव दिवाकरः ॥१४-७६-३२॥
meghajālanibhaṁ sainyaṁ vidārya sa raviprabhaḥ। vibabhau kauravaśreṣṭhaḥ śaradīva divākaraḥ ॥14-76-32॥
[मेघजालनिभं (meghajālanibham) - cloud-mass-resembling; सैन्यं (sainyam) - army; विदार्य (vidārya) - having torn apart; स (sa) - he; रविप्रभः (raviprabhaḥ) - sun-radiant (one whose splendor is like the sun); विबभौ (vibabhau) - shone; कौरवश्रेष्ठः (kauravaśreṣṭhaḥ) - the chief of the Kauravas; शरदि (śaradi) - in the autumn; इव (iva) - like; दिवाकरः (divākaraḥ) - the sun;]
(Cloud-mass-resembling army having torn apart, he sun-radiant shone, the chief of the Kauravas like in the autumn the sun.)
Having torn apart the army resembling a mass of clouds, he whose splendor was like the sun—the chief of the Kauravas—shone like the sun in autumn. (14-76-32)
