tato gāṇḍīvabhṛcchūro yuddhāya samavasthitaḥ। vibabhau yudhi durdharṣo himavānacalo yathā ॥14-77-1॥

ततः सैन्धवयोधास्ते पुनरेव व्यवस्थिताः। विमुञ्चन्तः सुसंरब्धाः शरवर्षाणि भारत ॥१४-७७-२॥
tataḥ saindhavayodhās te punar eva vyavasthitāḥ। vimuñcantaḥ susaṃrabdhāḥ śaravarṣāṇi bhārata ॥14-77-2॥

(Then the Sindhu warriors, they again indeed having been stationed, releasing, extremely enraged, showers of arrows, O Bhārata.)
Then, O Bhārata, the Sindhu warriors, having taken position once again, released showers of arrows in great fury. (14-77-2)
तान्प्रसह्य महावीर्यः पुनरेव व्यवस्थितान्। ततः प्रोवाच कौन्तेयो मुमूर्षूञ्श्लक्ष्णया गिरा ॥१४-७७-३॥
tān prasahya mahāvīryaḥ punar eva vyavasthitān, tataḥ provāca kaunteyaḥ mumūrṣūñ ślakṣṇayā girā ॥14-77-3॥
[तान् (tān) - them; प्रसह्य (prasahya) - having subdued; महावीर्यः (mahāvīryaḥ) - greatly powerful one; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; व्यवस्थितान् (vyavasthitān) - who were standing prepared; ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रोवाच (provāca) - said; कौन्तेयः (kaunteyaḥ) - the son of Kunti (Arjuna); मुमूर्षून् (mumūrṣūn) - those desiring to die; श्लक्ष्णया (ślakṣṇayā) - with gentle; गिरा (girā) - speech;]
(Them having subdued, the greatly powerful one indeed again (to) those standing prepared, then said the son of Kunti (to) those desiring to die, with gentle speech.)
Having overpowered them, the greatly powerful Arjuna once more addressed those who stood ready for death, gently saying: (14-77-3)
युध्यध्वं परया शक्त्या यतध्वं च वधे मम। कुरुध्वं सर्वकार्याणि महद्वो भयमागतम् ॥१४-७७-४॥
yudhyadhvaṃ parayā śaktyā yatadhvaṃ ca vadhe mama। kurudhvaṃ sarvakāryāṇi mahad vo bhayam āgatam ॥14-77-4॥
[युध्यध्वं (yudhyadhvaṃ) - you (all) fight; परया (parayā) - with supreme; शक्त्या (śaktyā) - power; यतध्वं (yatadhvaṃ) - you (all) strive; च (ca) - and; वधे (vadhe) - for the killing; मम (mama) - of me; कुरुध्वं (kurudhvaṃ) - you (all) do; सर्वकार्याणि (sarvakāryāṇi) - all tasks; महत् (mahat) - great; वः (vo) - to you (all); भयम् (bhayam) - fear; आगतम् (āgatam) - has come;]
(You (all) fight with supreme power; you strive also for my killing. You (all) do all tasks. Great fear to you has come.)
Fight with your utmost power and strive for my destruction. Perform all tasks, for great fear has come upon you. (14-77-4)
एष योत्स्यामि वः सर्वान्निवार्य शरवागुराम्। तिष्ठध्वं युद्धमनसो दर्पं विनयितास्मि वः ॥१४-७७-५॥
eṣa yotsyāmi vaḥ sarvān nivārya śaravāgurām। tiṣṭhadhvaṃ yuddhamanaso darpaṃ vinayitāsmi vaḥ ॥14-77-5॥

(This (person) I will fight (with) you (all), all (of you), having restrained the net of arrows. Stand firm, with the mind on battle. Pride I will humble in you (all).)
I, this person, will fight you all, restraining the net of arrows. Stand firm, with your mind on battle; I will humble your pride. (14-77-5)
एतावदुक्त्वा कौरव्यो रुषा गाण्डीवभृत्तदा। ततोऽथ वचनं स्मृत्वा भ्रातुर्ज्येष्ठस्य भारत ॥१४-७७-६॥
etāvad uktvā kauravyo ruṣā gāṇḍīvabhṛt tadā। tato 'tha vacanaṃ smṛtvā bhrātuḥ jyeṣṭhasya bhārata॥14-77-6॥

(Thus much having spoken, the Kaurava with anger, the bearer of the Gāṇḍīva then, thereafter, then, the word having remembered of the brother, of the elder, O Bhārata.)
Having spoken thus, the Kaurava Arjuna, burning with anger, then remembered the words of his elder brother, O Bhārata. (14-77-6)
न हन्तव्या रणे तात क्षत्रिया विजिगीषवः। जेतव्याश्चेति यत्प्रोक्तं धर्मराज्ञा महात्मना ॥ चिन्तयामास च तदा फल्गुनः पुरुषर्षभः ॥१४-७७-७॥
na hantavyā raṇe tāta kṣatriyā vijigīṣavaḥ। jetavyāś ceti yat proktaṃ dharmarājñā mahātmanā ॥ cintayāmāsa ca tadā phalguṇaḥ puruṣarṣabhaḥ ॥14-77-7॥

(Not to be killed in battle, O father, are the Kshatriyas desiring to conquer; to be vanquished, and thus, which was spoken by Dharmarāja the great-souled. Reflected and then Phalguna, bull among men.)
O father, the Kshatriyas who seek victory in battle are not to be killed but to be conquered—thus was declared by Dharmarāja, the great-souled one. Then, Phalguna, the best among men, reflected on this. (14-77-7)
इत्युक्तोऽहं नरेन्द्रेण न हन्तव्या नृपा इति। कथं तन्न मृषेह स्याद्धर्मराजवचः शुभम् ॥१४-७७-८॥
ity ukto 'haṃ narendreṇa na hantavyā nṛpā iti. kathaṃ tan na mṛṣa iha syād dharmarājavacaḥ śubham ॥14-77-8॥

(Thus spoken I by the king, "not to be killed are the kings" thus. How that not false here would be (the) speech of Dharmarāja auspicious.)
Having been thus addressed by the king—"Let the kings not be killed"—how could the auspicious words of Dharmarāja here not be true? (14-77-8)
न हन्येरंश्च राजानो राज्ञश्चाज्ञा कृता भवेत्। इति सञ्चिन्त्य स तदा भ्रातुः प्रियहिते रतः ॥ प्रोवाच वाक्यं धर्मज्ञः सैन्धवान्युद्धदुर्मदान् ॥१४-७७-९॥
na hanyeraṁś ca rājāno rājñaś cājñā kṛtā bhavet। iti sañcintya sa tadā bhrātuḥ priyahite rataḥ ॥ provāca vākyaṁ dharmajñaḥ saindhavān yuddha-durmadān ॥14-77-9॥
[न (na) - not; हन्येरन् (hanyeran) - should be slain; च (ca) - and; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; च (ca) - and; आज्ञा (ājñā) - order; कृता (kṛtā) - done; भवेत् (bhavet) - should be; इति (iti) - thus; सञ्चिन्त्य (sañcintya) - having considered; स (sa) - he; तदा (tadā) - then; भ्रातुः (bhrātuḥ) - of (his) brother; प्रियहिते (priyahite) - for the (brother's) dear welfare; रतः (rataḥ) - engaged; प्रोवाच (provāca) - spoke; वाक्यं (vākyaṁ) - word; धर्मज्ञः (dharmajñaḥ) - knower of dharma; सैन्धवान् (saindhavān) - the Saindhavas; युद्धदुर्मदान् (yuddha-durmadān) - intoxicated with battle;]
(Not should be slain and kings, and of the king order done should be. Thus having considered, he then, for his brother's dear welfare engaged, spoke a word, knower of dharma, the Saindhavas, intoxicated with battle.)
The kings should not be slain, and the king's order should be carried out. Thinking thus, he, intent on his brother's welfare, who was a knower of dharma, then spoke these words to the Saindhavas, who were maddened in battle. (14-77-9)
बालान्स्त्रियो वा युष्माकं न हनिष्ये व्यवस्थितान्। यश्च वक्ष्यति सङ्ग्रामे तवास्मीति पराजितः ॥१४-७७-१०॥
bālān striyo vā yuṣmākaṃ na haniṣye vyavasthitān। yaś ca vakṣyati saṅgrāme tav āsmi iti parājitaḥ॥14-77-10॥
[बालान् (bālān) - children; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; वा (vā) - or; युष्माकं (yuṣmākam) - of you; न (na) - not; हनिष्ये (haniṣye) - I shall slay; व्यवस्थितान् (vyavasthitān) - standing; arranged; यः (yaḥ) - who; च (ca) - and; वक्ष्यति (vakṣyati) - will say; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; तव (tava) - your; अस्मि (asmi) - (I) am; इति (iti) - thus; पराजितः (parājitaḥ) - defeated;]
(Children, women, or of you, I shall not slay (those) standing; and who will say in battle "I am yours" thus, (is) defeated.)
I shall not kill children or women among you who stand (before me), nor anyone who in battle says, "I am yours"; such a one is regarded as defeated. (14-77-10)
एतच्छ्रुत्वा वचो मह्यं कुरुध्वं हितमात्मनः। अतोऽन्यथा कृच्छ्रगता भविष्यथ मयार्दिताः ॥१४-७७-११॥
etat-śrutvā vaco mahyaṁ kurudhvaṁ hitam ātmanaḥ। ato'nyathā kṛcchragatā bhaviṣyatha mayā arditāḥ॥14-77-11॥
[एतच्छ्रुत्वा (etat-śrutvā) - this (having) heard; वचः (vacaḥ) - word; मह्यं (mahyaṁ) - to me; कुरुध्वं (kurudhvaṁ) - do; हितम् (hitam) - good; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - for yourselves; अतः (ataḥ) - from this; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise; कृच्छ्रगता (kṛcchragatā) - having gone to difficulty; भविष्यथ (bhaviṣyatha) - you will become; मया (mayā) - by me; अर्दिताः (arditāḥ) - stricken;]
(Having heard this word to me, do the good for yourselves. From this, otherwise, you will become fallen into difficulty, stricken by me. (14-77-11))
Having heard these words of mine, do what is good for yourselves; otherwise, you will fall into difficulty, being afflicted by me. (14-77-11)
एवमुक्त्वा तु तान्वीरान्युयुधे कुरुपुङ्गवः। अत्वरावानसंरब्धः संरब्धैर्विजिगीषुभिः ॥१४-७७-१२॥
evam uktvā tu tān vīrān yuyudhe kuru-puṅgavaḥ। atvarāvān saṁrabdhaḥ saṁrabdhaiḥ vijigīṣubhiḥ ॥14-77-12॥

(Thus having spoken but them, heroes, fought the bull among the Kurus; not delaying, excited, with the excited and with those desiring victory.)
Having thus spoken, the bull among the Kurus fought with those heroes; eager and excited, together with others who were equally excited and eager for victory. (14-77-12)
ततः शतसहस्राणि शराणां नतपर्वणाम्। मुमुचुः सैन्धवा राजंस्तदा गाण्डीवधन्वनि ॥१४-७७-१३॥
tataḥ śatasahasrāṇi śarāṇāṃ nataparvaṇām। mumucuḥ saindhavā rājaṃs tadā gāṇḍīvadhanvani ॥14-77-13॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; शतसहस्राणि (śatasahasrāṇi) - hundreds of thousands; शराणां (śarāṇāṃ) - of arrows; नतपर्वणाम् (nataparvaṇām) - curved-jointed; मुमुचुः (mumucuḥ) - they released; सैन्धवा (saindhavāḥ) - the Sindhus; राजन् (rājan) - O king; तदा (tadā) - then; गाण्डीवधन्वनि (gāṇḍīvadhanvani) - at the wielder of the Gandiva bow;]
(Then hundreds of thousands of curved-jointed arrows the Sindhus released, O king, then, at the wielder of the Gandiva bow.)
Then, O king, the Sindhu warriors released hundreds of thousands of curved arrows at the wielder of the Gandiva bow. (14-77-13)
स तानापततः क्रूरानाशीविषविषोपमान्। चिच्छेद निशितैर्बाणैरन्तरैव धनञ्जयः ॥१४-७७-१४॥
sa tān āpatataḥ krūrān āśīviṣaviṣopamān | ciccheda niśitaiḥ bāṇaiḥ antara eva dhanañjayaḥ ॥14-77-14॥
[स (sa) - he; तान् (tān) - them; आपततः (āpatataḥ) - rushing (towards him); क्रूरान् (krūrān) - cruel; आशीविषविषोपमान् (āśīviṣaviṣopamān) - like the poison of deadly serpents; चिच्छेद (ciccheda) - cut off; निशितैः (niśitaiḥ) - with sharp; बाणैः (bāṇaiḥ) - arrows; अन्तरैव (antara eva) - in the middle itself; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhananjaya (Arjuna);]
(He them rushing cruel like the poison of deadly serpents cut off with sharp arrows in the middle itself Dhananjaya.)
Dhananjaya (Arjuna), with sharp arrows, cut down those cruel warriors rushing at him, who were like the poison of deadly serpents, right in the midst.
छित्त्वा तु तानाशुगमान्कङ्कपत्राञ्शिलाशितान्। एकैकमेष दशभिर्बिभेद समरे शरैः ॥१४-७७-१५॥
chittvā tu tān āśu-gamān kaṅka-patrān śilā-āśitān. ekaikam eṣa daśabhiḥ bibheda samare śaraiḥ ॥14-77-15॥
[छित्त्वा (chittvā) - having cut off; तु (tu) - but; तान् (tān) - them; आशुगमान् (āśu-gamān) - swift-moving; कङ्कपत्रान् (kaṅka-patrān) - having vulture-feathered (arrows); शिलाशितान् (śilā-āśitān) - tipped with iron; एकैकम् (ekaikam) - each one; एषः (eṣa) - he; दशभिः (daśabhiḥ) - with ten; बिभेद (bibheda) - pierced; समरे (samare) - in battle; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows;]
(Having cut off them, swift-moving, vulture-feathered, tipped with iron; each one, he with ten, pierced in battle with arrows.)
But having cut off those swift-moving vulture-feathered iron-tipped (arrows), he pierced each one in battle with ten arrows. (14-77-15)
ततः प्रासांश्च शक्तीश्च पुनरेव धनञ्जये। जयद्रथं हतं स्मृत्वा चिक्षिपुः सैन्धवा नृपाः ॥१४-७७-१६॥
tataḥ prāsaṁś ca śaktīś ca punar eva dhanañjaye । jayadrathaṁ hataṁ smṛtvā cikṣipuḥ saindhavā nṛpāḥ ॥14-77-16॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रासान् (prāsān) - javelins; च (ca) - and; शक्तीन् (śaktīn) - lances; च (ca) - and; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; धनञ्जये (dhanañjaye) - on Dhanañjaya; जयद्रथम् (jayadratham) - Jayadratha; हतम् (hatam) - killed; स्मृत्वा (smṛtvā) - remembering; चिक्षिपुः (cikṣipuḥ) - hurled; सैन्धवाः (saindhavāḥ) - Sindhu warriors; नृपाः (nṛpāḥ) - kings;]
(Then javelins and lances again indeed on Dhanañjaya, Jayadratha killed remembering, hurled the Sindhu warriors, kings.)
Then, remembering that Jayadratha had been killed, the Sindhu warrior kings once again hurled javelins and lances at Dhanañjaya. (14-77-16)
तेषां किरीटी सङ्कल्पं मोघं चक्रे महामनाः। सर्वांस्तानन्तरा छित्त्वा मुदा चुक्रोश पाण्डवः ॥१४-७७-१७॥
teṣāṃ kirīṭī saṅkalpaṃ moghaṃ cakre mahāmanāḥ. sarvāṃs tān antarā chittvā mudā cukrośa pāṇḍavaḥ ॥14-77-17॥
[तेषां (teṣām) - of them; किरीटी (kirīṭī) - the one with the diadem; सङ्कल्पं (saṅkalpam) - purpose; मोगं (mogham) - vain; चक्रे (cakre) - made; महामनाः (mahāmanāḥ) - the great-minded; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; तान् (tān) - those; अन्तरा (antarā) - in between; छित्त्वा (chittvā) - having cut down; मुदा (mudā) - with delight; चुक्रोश (cukrośa) - shouted; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the son of Pāṇḍu;]
(Of them, the one with the diadem (Kirīṭī), their purpose vain made, the great-minded. All those in between having cut down, with delight shouted the son of Pāṇḍu.)
Kirīṭī, the great-minded son of Pāṇḍu, made their purpose vain; and having cut down all those in between, shouted with delight. (14-77-17)
तथैवापततां तेषां योधानां जयगृद्धिनाम्। शिरांसि पातयामास भल्लैः संनतपर्वभिः ॥१४-७७-१८॥
tathaivāpatatāṃ teṣāṃ yodhānāṃ jayagṛddhinām। śirāṃsi pātayāmāsa bhallaiḥ saṃnataparvabhiḥ ॥14-77-18॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same manner; similarly; अपतताम् (apatatām) - of those who were falling; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; their; योधानाम् (yodhānām) - of the warriors; जयगृद्धिनाम् (jayagṛddhinām) - desirous of victory; शिरांसि (śirāṃsi) - heads; पातयामास (pātayāmāsa) - caused to fall; made fall; भल्लैः (bhallaiḥ) - with arrows; संनतपर्वभिः (saṃnataparvabhiḥ) - with curved-bladed (arrows);]
(In the same manner, of those who were falling, of the warriors desirous of victory, the heads he caused to fall with arrows with curved-blades.)
In the same way, he struck down the heads of those warriors eager for victory as they fell, using arrows with curved blades. (14-77-18)
तेषां प्रद्रवतां चैव पुनरेव च धावताम्। निवर्ततां च शब्दोऽभूत्पूर्णस्येव महोदधेः ॥१४-७७-१९॥
teṣāṃ pradravatāṃ caiva punareva ca dhāvatām। nivartatāṃ ca śabdo'bhūtpūrṇasyeva mahodaḍheḥ ॥14-77-19॥
[तेषां (teṣām) - of them; प्रद्रवतां (pradravatām) - running away; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; धावताम् (dhāvatām) - charging (running); निवर्ततां (nivartatām) - returning (turning back); च (ca) - and; शब्दः (śabdaḥ) - sound; अभूत् (abhūt) - arose; पूर्णस्य (pūrṇasya) - of full; इव (iva) - like; महोदधेः (mahodadheḥ) - of (the) great ocean;]
(Of them running away and indeed again and charging, returning and sound arose, like of full great ocean.)
The sound arose from those who were fleeing, once again charging, and turning back, just like the roar of a full ocean. (14-77-19)
ते वध्यमानास्तु तदा पार्थेनामिततेजसा। यथाप्राणं यथोत्साहं योधयामासुरर्जुनम् ॥१४-७७-२०॥
te vadhyamānās tu tadā pārthena amitatejasā। yathā prāṇaṃ yathotsāhaṃ yodhayāmāsur arjunam॥14-77-20॥
[ते (te) - they; वध्यमानाः (vadhyamānāḥ) - being slain; तु (tu) - but; तदा (tadā) - then; पार्थेन (pārthena) - by Partha (Arjuna); अमिततेजसा (amitatejasā) - of immeasurable brilliance; यथा (yathā) - as (according to); प्राणम् (prāṇam) - life (breath); यथोत्साहम् (yathotsāham) - as (according to) strength (enthusiasm); योधयामासुः (yodhayāmāsuḥ) - they fought; अर्जुनम् (arjunam) - Arjuna;]
(They, being slain, but then by Partha of immeasurable brilliance, as (according to) life, as (according to) strength, fought Arjuna.)
Even as they were being slain then by Partha (Arjuna) of immeasurable brilliance, they fought Arjuna with whatever life and vigor remained. (14-77-20)
ततस्ते फल्गुनेनाजौ शरैः संनतपर्वभिः। कृता विसञ्ज्ञा भूयिष्ठाः क्लान्तवाहनसैनिकाः ॥१४-७७-२१॥
tatas te phalgunenājau śaraiḥ saṁnataparvabhiḥ। kṛtā visañjñā bhūyiṣṭhāḥ klāntavāhanasainikāḥ॥14-77-21॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - they; फल्गुनेन (phalgunena) - by Phalguna (Arjuna); अजौ (ajau) - in battle; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows; संनतपर्वभिः (saṁnataparvabhiḥ) - having curved joints (of arrows); कृता (kṛtā) - made; विसञ्ज्ञाः (visañjñāḥ) - unconscious; भूयिष्ठाः (bhūyiṣṭhāḥ) - most of; क्लान्त (klānta) - wearied; वाहन (vāhana) - vehicles; सैनिकाः (sainikāḥ) - warriors;]
(Then they, by Phalguna in battle with arrows having curved joints, were made unconscious—most of the warriors with wearied vehicles.)
Then, most warriors with exhausted vehicles were rendered unconscious in battle by Phalguna (Arjuna) with arrows of curved shafts. (14-77-21)
तांस्तु सर्वान्परिग्लानान्विदित्वा धृतराष्ट्रजा। दुःशला बालमादाय नप्तारं प्रययौ तदा ॥ सुरथस्य सुतं वीरं रथेनानागसं तदा ॥१४-७७-२२॥
tāṃs tu sarvān pariglānān viditvā dhṛtarāṣṭrajā। duḥśalā bālam ādāya naptāraṃ prayayau tadā ॥ surathasya sutaṃ vīraṃ rathenānāgasaṃ tadā ॥14-77-22॥
[ताञ् (tāṃs) - them; तु (tu) - but; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; परिग्लानान् (pariglānān) - utterly dejected; विदित्वा (viditvā) - having perceived; धृतराष्ट्रजा (dhṛtarāṣṭrajā) - daughter of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; दुःशला (duḥśalā) - Duḥśalā; बालम् (bālam) - child; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; नप्तारम् (naptāram) - grandson; प्रययौ (prayayau) - she departed; तदा (tadā) - then; सुरथस्य (surathasya) - of Suratha; सुतम् (sutaṃ) - son; वीरम् (vīram) - hero; रथेना (rathena) - by chariot; अनागसम् (anāgasam) - innocent; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(But having perceived all of them utterly dejected, the daughter of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, Duḥśalā, having taken the child grandson, then departed; the innocent heroic son of Suratha then (departed) by chariot.)
But seeing all of them completely dejected, Duḥśalā, the daughter of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, took her young grandson and departed then; the heroic and innocent son of Suratha also left in his chariot at that time. (14-77-22)
शान्त्यर्थं सर्वयोधानामभ्यगच्छत पाण्डवम्। सा धनञ्जयमासाद्य मुमोचार्तस्वरं तदा ॥ धनञ्जयोऽपि तां दृष्ट्वा धनुर्विससृजे प्रभुः ॥१४-७७-२३॥
śānty-arthaṃ sarva-yodhānām abhyagacchata pāṇḍavam। sā dhanañjayam āsādya mumo cārta-svaraṃ tadā ॥ dhanañjayaḥ api tām dṛṣṭvā dhanus visasṛje prabhuḥ ॥14-77-23॥
[शान्त्यर्थं (śāntyartham) - for the sake of peace; सर्वयोधानाम् (sarvayodhānām) - of all warriors; अभ्यगच्छत् (abhyagacchat) - approached; पाण्डवम् (pāṇḍavam) - the son of Pāṇḍu; सा (sā) - she; धनञ्जयम् (dhanañjayam) - Dhanañjaya; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; मुमोच (mumoca) - uttered; आर्तस्वरं (ārta-svaram) - a distressed cry; तदा (tadā) - then; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhanañjaya; अपि (api) - also; ताम् (tām) - her; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; धनुः (dhanuḥ) - bow; विससृजे (visasṛje) - laid aside; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord;]
(For the sake of peace of all warriors, she approached the son of Pandu. She, having reached Dhananjaya, then uttered a distressed cry. Dhananjaya also, having seen her, the lord laid aside his bow.)
For the sake of peace among all warriors, she approached the Pandava. Having reached Dhananjaya, she then uttered a cry of distress. Dhananjaya, seeing her, also laid down his bow. (14-77-23)
समुत्सृष्टधनुः पार्थो विधिवद्भगिनीं तदा। प्राह किं करवाणीति सा च तं वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥१४-७७-२४॥
samutsṛṣṭa-dhanuḥ pārtho vidhivad-bhaginīṃ tadā। prāha kiṃ karavāṇīti sā ca taṃ vākyam abravīt॥14-77-24॥
[समुत्सृष्टधनुः (samutsṛṣṭa-dhanuḥ) - with bow having been laid aside; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha (Arjuna); विधिवत् (vidhivat) - duly; भगिनीम् (bhaginīm) - sister (accusative); तदा (tadā) - then; प्राह (prāha) - said; किं (kiṃ) - what; करवाणि (karavāṇi) - shall I do; इति (iti) - thus; सा (sā) - she; च (ca) - and; तम् (tam) - to him; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - word; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(With bow having been laid aside, Pārtha then duly (to his) sister said, 'What shall I do?' Thus she also spoke that word to him.)
Having laid his bow aside, Pārtha then duly addressed his sister, saying, 'What shall I do?' She also spoke these words to him. (14-77-24)
एष ते भरतश्रेष्ठ स्वस्रीयस्यात्मजः शिशुः। अभिवादयते वीर तं पश्य पुरुषर्षभ ॥१४-७७-२५॥
eṣa te bharataśreṣṭha svasrīyasyātmajaḥ śiśuḥ। abhivādayate vīra taṃ paśya puruṣarṣabha ॥14-77-25॥
[एष (eṣa) - this (one); ते (te) - to you; भरतश्रेष्ठ (bharataśreṣṭha) - O best of the Bharatas; स्वस्रीयस्यात्मजः (svasrīyasyātmajaḥ) - son of your sister (svasrīya = sister's, ātmajaḥ = son); शिशुः (śiśuḥ) - child; अभिवादयते (abhivādayate) - greets; वीर (vīra) - O hero; तं (taṃ) - him; पश्य (paśya) - see; पुरुषर्षभ (puruṣarṣabha) - O bull among men;]
(This to you, O best of Bharatas, the son of your sister, the child, greets, O hero; him see, O bull among men.)
O best of the Bharatas, this child, your sister's son, greets you, O hero; see him, O bull among men. (14-77-25)
इत्युक्तस्तस्य पितरं स पप्रच्छार्जुनस्तदा। क्वासाविति ततो राजन्दुःशला वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥१४-७७-२६॥
ity-uktas tasya pitaraṃ sa papracchārjunas tadā। kvāsāv iti tato rājan duḥśalā vākyam abravīt ॥14-77-26॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been addressed; तस्य (tasya) - to him; पितरं (pitaraṃ) - father; सः (saḥ) - he; पप्रच्छ (papraccha) - asked; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; तदा (tadā) - then; क्व (kva) - where; असा (asā) - she; इति (iti) - thus; ततः (tataḥ) - then; राजन् (rājan) - O king; दुःशला (duḥśalā) - Duḥśalā; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Thus having been addressed, to him (his) father he Arjuna then asked. Where is she? thus then O king, Duḥśalā speech said.)
Thus addressed, Arjuna then asked his father, “Where is she?” Thereupon, O king, Duḥśalā spoke these words. (14-77-26)
पितृशोकाभिसन्तप्तो विषादार्तोऽस्य वै पिता। पञ्चत्वमगमद्वीर यथा तन्मे निबोध ह ॥१४-७७-२७॥
pitṛśokābhisantapto viṣādārto'sya vai pitā। pañcatvam agamad vīra yathā tan me nibodha ha ॥14-77-27॥
[पितृशोकाभिसन्तप्तः (pitṛśokābhisantaptaḥ) - afflicted by the grief over his father; विषादार्तः (viṣādārtaḥ) - distressed by despair; अस्य (asya) - his; वै (vai) - indeed; पिता (pitā) - the father; पञ्चत्वम् (pañcatvam) - death; अगमत् (agamat) - attained; वीर (vīra) - O hero; यथा (yathā) - how; तत् (tat) - that; मे (me) - to me; निबोध (nibodha) - listen; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Afflicted by father-grief, distressed by despair, his indeed father attained death, O hero, how that, to me, listen indeed.)
Afflicted by grief over his father and distressed with despair, his father indeed attained death, O hero; listen to me as I tell you how that happened. (14-77-27)
स पूर्वं पितरं श्रुत्वा हतं युद्धे त्वयानघ। त्वामागतं च संश्रुत्य युद्धाय हयसारिणम् ॥ पितुश्च मृत्युदुःखार्तोऽजहात्प्राणान्धनञ्जय ॥१४-७७-२८॥
sa pūrvaṃ pitaraṃ śrutvā hataṃ yuddhe tvayānagha. tvāmāgataṃ ca saṃśrutya yuddhāya hayasāriṇam ॥ pituś ca mṛtyuduḥkhārto'jahāt prāṇān dhanañjaya ॥14-77-28॥
[स (sa) - he; पूर्वं (pūrvam) - before; पितरं (pitaraṃ) - father; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; हतं (hataṃ) - slain; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; आगतं (āgataṃ) - arrived; च (ca) - and; संश्रुत्य (saṃśrutya) - having heard; युद्धाय (yuddhāya) - for battle; हयसारिणम् (hayasāriṇam) - the charioteer; पितुश् (pituś) - of (his) father; च (ca) - and; मृत्युदुःखार्तः (mṛtyuduḥkhārtaḥ) - afflicted by the grief of (his) father's death; अजहात् (ajahāt) - did not abandon; प्राणान् (prāṇān) - life-breaths; धनञ्जय (dhanañjaya) - O Dhanañjaya;]
(He, having previously heard that (his) father was slain in battle by you, O sinless one, and having heard that you, the charioteer, had arrived for battle, being afflicted by the grief of (his) father's death, did not abandon (his) life-breaths, O Dhanañjaya.)
He, having earlier heard from you, O sinless one, that his father was slain in battle, and that you, the charioteer, had arrived for battle, being distraught with sorrow over his father's death, did not give up his life, O Dhanañjaya. (14-77-28)
प्राप्तो बीभत्सुरित्येव नाम श्रुत्वैव तेऽनघ। विषादार्तः पपातोर्व्यां ममार च ममात्मजः ॥१४-७७-२९॥
prāpto bībhatsur ityeva nāma śrutvaiva te'nagha। viṣādārtaḥ papātorvyāṃ mamāra ca mamātmajaḥ॥14-77-29॥
[प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - having arrived; बीभत्सुः (bībhatsuḥ) - Bībhatsu (Arjuna); इति (iti) - thus; एव (eva) - indeed; नाम (nāma) - name; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; एव (eva) - just; ते (te) - your; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one; विषादार्तः (viṣādārtaḥ) - afflicted with grief; पपात (papāta) - he fell; उर्व्याम् (urvyām) - on the ground; मम (mama) - my; आत्मजः (ātmajaḥ) - son; च (ca) - and; ममार (mamāra) - he died;]
(Having arrived, Bībhatsu—thus indeed the name—having just heard, O sinless one, your son, afflicted with grief, fell on the ground and died.)
O sinless one, Bībhatsu having arrived—upon only hearing that name, your son, afflicted with grief, fell to the ground and died. (14-77-29)
तं तु दृष्ट्वा निपतितं ततस्तस्यात्मजं विभो। गृहीत्वा समनुप्राप्ता त्वामद्य शरणैषिणी ॥१४-७७-३०॥
taṃ tu dṛṣṭvā nipatitaṃ tatas tasyātmajaṃ vibho। gṛhītvā samanuprāptā tvām adya śaraṇaiṣiṇī ॥14-77-30॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; तु (tu) - but; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; निपतितं (nipatitaṃ) - fallen; ततः (tatas) - thereafter; तस्यात्मजं (tasyātmajam) - his son; विभो (vibho) - O lord; गृहीत्वा (gṛhītvā) - having taken; समनुप्राप्ता (samanuprāptā) - has come (unto); त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अद्य (adya) - today; शरणैषिणी (śaraṇaiṣiṇī) - seeking refuge;]
(But having seen him fallen, thereafter his son, O lord, taking (him), has come to you today, seeking refuge.)
But, O lord, having seen him fallen, thereafter his son has today come to you, seeking refuge. (14-77-30)
इत्युक्त्वार्तस्वरं सा तु मुमोच धृतराष्ट्रजा। दीना दीनं स्थितं पार्थमब्रवीच्चाप्यधोमुखम् ॥१४-७७-३१॥
ity uktvā ārtasvaraṃ sā tu mumoca dhṛtarāṣṭrajā। dīnā dīnaṃ sthitaṃ pārtham abravīc cāpy adhomukham ॥14-77-31॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; आर्तस्वरं (ārtasvaram) - distressed tone; सा (sā) - she; तु (tu) - but; मुमोच (mumoca) - let out; धृतराष्ट्रजा (dhṛtarāṣṭrajā) - daughter of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; दीना (dīnā) - afflicted; दीनं (dīnam) - afflicted (one); स्थितं (sthitam) - standing; पार्थम् (pārtham) - Pārtha (Arjuna); अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - even; अधोमुखम् (adhomukham) - with face turned downwards;]
(Thus having spoken in a distressed tone, she indeed let out, the daughter of Dhṛtarāṣṭra. Afflicted, to the afflicted, standing Pārtha, she also said, with face turned downwards.)
Having thus spoken in a distressed tone, the daughter of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, afflicted, let out a cry and addressed Pārtha, who was himself afflicted, standing there with face turned downwards. (14-77-31)
स्वसारं मामवेक्षस्व स्वस्रीयात्मजमेव च। कर्तुमर्हसि धर्मज्ञ दयां मयि कुरूद्वह ॥ विस्मृत्य कुरुराजानं तं च मन्दं जयद्रथम् ॥१४-७७-३२॥
svasāraṁ mām avekṣasva svasrīyātmajam eva ca। kartum arhasi dharmajña dayāṁ mayi kurūdvaha॥ vismṛtya kururājānaṁ taṁ ca mandaṁ jayadratham॥14-77-32॥
[स्वसारम् (svasāram) - sister; (accusative singular feminine); माम् (mām) - me; (accusative singular first person); अवेक्षस्व (avekṣasva) - look (imperative; second person singular; from ava + īkṣ); स्वस्रीयात्मजम् (svasrīyātmajam) - sister’s son; nephew; (accusative singular masculine); एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; (infinitive of kṛ; ‘to make’); अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought; you are worthy; (second person singular, present); धर्मज्ञ (dharmajña) - knower of dharma; one skilled in righteousness; (vocative singular masculine); दयाम् (dayām) - compassion; mercy; (accusative singular feminine); मयि (mayi) - towards me; unto me; (locative singular first person); कुरूद्वह (kurūdvaha) - O best of the Kurus; (vocative singular masculine); विस्मृत्य (vismṛtya) - having forgotten; (absolutive of vi + smṛ); कुरुराजानम् (kururājānam) - king of the Kurus; तम् (tam) - him; च (ca) - and; मन्दम् (mandam) - foolish; slow; (accusative singular masculine); जयद्रथम् (jayadratham) - Jayadratha; (proper noun; accusative singular masculine);]
(Sister me look, sister’s son indeed and. To do you ought, O knower of dharma, compassion towards me, O best of Kurus. Having forgotten the king of the Kurus and that foolish Jayadratha.)
Look upon me as your sister and also as your sister’s son. You ought to show compassion towards me, O knower of dharma, O best of the Kurus. Forget the king of the Kurus and that foolish Jayadratha. (14-77-32)
अभिमन्योर्यथा जातः परिक्षित्परवीरहा। तथायं सुरथाज्जातो मम पौत्रो महाभुज ॥१४-७७-३३॥
abhimanyoryathā jātaḥ parikṣit-paravīra-hā. tathāyaṃ surathāj jāto mama pautro mahā-bhuja ॥14-77-33॥
[अभिमन्योर्यथा (abhimanyor-yathā) - of Abhimanyu - just as; जातः (jātaḥ) - was born; परिक्षित्परवीरहा (parikṣit-paravīra-hā) - Parikṣit, destroyer of enemy heroes; तथा (tathā) - so; in the same way; अयं (ayaṃ) - this; सुरथाज् (surathāt) - from Suratha; जातो (jātaḥ) - was born; मम (mama) - my; पौत्रो (pautraḥ) - grandson; महाभुज (mahā-bhuja) - mighty-armed;]
(Just as from Abhimanyu was born Parikṣit, destroyer of enemy heroes; so this (one), mighty-armed, my grandson, was born from Suratha.)
Just as Parikṣit, the destroyer of enemy heroes, was born of Abhimanyu, so my mighty-armed grandson was born of Suratha. (14-77-33)
तमादाय नरव्याघ्र सम्प्राप्तास्मि तवान्तिकम्। शमार्थं सर्वयोधानां शृणु चेदं वचो मम ॥१४-७७-३४॥
tam ādāya naravyāghra samprāptāsmi tavāntikam। śamārthaṃ sarvayodhānāṃ śṛṇu cedaṃ vaco mama॥14-77-34॥
[तम् (tam) - him; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) - tiger among men; सम्प्राप्तास्मि (samprāptāsmi) - I have arrived; तव (tava) - to your; अन्तिकम् (antikam) - presence; शमार्थं (śamārtham) - for the sake of peace; सर्वयोधानाम् (sarvayodhānām) - of all warriors; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; च (ca) - and; इदम् (idam) - this; वचः (vacaḥ) - word; मम (mama) - of mine;]
(Him having taken, tiger among men, I have arrived to your presence. For the sake of peace of all warriors, hear and this word of mine.)
Having brought him, O tiger among men, I have come into your presence. For the sake of peace among all warriors, listen also to this my word. (14-77-34)
आगतोऽयं महाबाहो तस्य मन्दस्य पौत्रकः। प्रसादमस्य बालस्य तस्मात्त्वं कर्तुमर्हसि ॥१४-७७-३५॥
āgato'yaṃ mahābāho tasya mandasya pautrakaḥ। prasādam asya bālasya tasmāt tvaṃ kartum arhasi॥14-77-35॥
[आगतः (āgataḥ) - arrived; अयम् (ayam) - this; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; तस्य (tasya) - of him; मन्दस्य (mandasya) - of the slow-witted; पौत्रकः (pautrakaḥ) - grandson; प्रसादम् (prasādam) - favor; अस्य (asya) - of this; बालस्य (bālasya) - boy; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; त्वम् (tvaṃ) - you; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; अर्हसि (arhasi) - are worthy;]
(Arrived this O mighty-armed, of that slow-witted person grandson. Favor of this boy therefore you to do are worthy.)
O mighty-armed, this is the grandson of that slow-witted person who has arrived. Therefore, you ought to show favor to this boy. (14-77-35)
एष प्रसाद्य शिरसा मया सार्धमरिंदम। याचते त्वां महाबाहो शमं गच्छ धनञ्जय ॥१४-७७-३६॥
eṣa prasādya śirasā mayā sārdham ariṃdama। yācate tvāṃ mahābāho śamaṃ gaccha dhanañjaya ॥14-77-36॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; प्रसाद्य (prasādya) - having propitiated; शिरसा (śirasā) - with (his) head; मया (mayā) - by me; सार्धम् (sārdham) - together with; अरिंदम (ariṃdama) - O subduer of foes; याचते (yācate) - asks; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; शमं (śamam) - peace; गच्छ (gaccha) - go (to); धनञ्जय (dhanañjaya) - O Dhananjaya;]
(This, having propitiated with (his) head by me together, O subduer of foes, asks you, O mighty-armed, go to peace, O Dhananjaya.)
This one, having bowed his head together with me, O subduer of foes, begs you, O mighty-armed Dhananjaya, to make peace. (14-77-36)
बालस्य हतबन्धोश्च पार्थ किञ्चिदजानतः। प्रसादं कुरु धर्मज्ञ मा मन्युवशमन्वगाः ॥१४-७७-३७॥
bālasya hatabandhoś ca pārtha kiñcid ajānataḥ। prasādaṃ kuru dharmajña mā manyuvaśam anvagāḥ॥14-77-37॥
[बालस्य (bālasya) - of the boy; हतबन्धोः (hatabandhoḥ) - whose protector (bandhu) has been killed; च (ca) - and; पार्थ (pārtha) - O Pārtha; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - somewhat; अजानतः (ajānataḥ) - not knowing; प्रसादं (prasādam) - grace; कुरु (kuru) - show; धर्मज्ञ (dharmajña) - O knower of dharma; मा (mā) - do not; मन्युवशम् (manyuvaśam) - under the control of anger; अन्वगाः (anvagāḥ) - follow;]
(Of the boy whose protector has been slain, and who knows little, O Pārtha, show grace, O knower of dharma, do not follow the sway of anger.)
O Pārtha, to the boy whose protector has been killed and who knows little, show grace, O knower of dharma, do not be led by anger. (14-77-37)
तमनार्यं नृशंसं च विस्मृत्यास्य पितामहम्। आगस्कारिणमत्यर्थं प्रसादं कर्तुमर्हसि ॥१४-७७-३८॥
tam anāryam nṛśaṁsaṁ ca vismṛtyāsya pitāmaham। āgaskāriṇam atyar thaṁ prasādaṁ kartum arhasi॥14-77-38॥

(You ought to grant favor to him, not noble, cruel, having forgotten his grandfather, an excessive offender.)
You should show favor even to him, who is ignoble, cruel, has forgotten his grandfather, and is greatly at fault. (14-77-38)
एवं ब्रुवत्यां करुणं दुःशलायां धनञ्जयः। संस्मृत्य देवीं गान्धारीं धृतराष्ट्रं च पार्थिवम् ॥ प्रोवाच दुःखशोकार्तः क्षत्रधर्मं विगर्हयन् ॥१४-७७-३९॥
evaṃ bruvatyāṃ karuṇaṃ duḥśalāyāṃ dhanañjayaḥ। saṃsmṛtya devīṃ gāndhārīṃ dhṛtarāṣṭraṃ ca pārthivam॥ provāca duḥkhaśokārtaḥ kṣatradharmaṃ vigarhayan॥14-77-39॥

(Thus, as Duḥśalā was speaking pitifully, Dhanañjaya, having remembered the queen Gāndhārī and the king Dhṛtarāṣṭra, and afflicted by pain and grief, condemning the kṣatriya duty, spoke.)
While Duḥśalā was speaking in a pitiful manner, Arjuna, remembering queen Gāndhārī and king Dhṛtarāṣṭra, deeply distressed by pain and sorrow, and censuring the kṣatriya duty, spoke. (14-77-39)
धिक्तं दुर्योधनं क्षुद्रं राज्यलुब्धं च मानिनम्। यत्कृते बान्धवाः सर्वे मया नीता यमक्षयम् ॥१४-७७-४०॥
dhiktaṃ duryodhanaṃ kṣudraṃ rājyalubdhaṃ ca māninam। yatkṛte bāndhavāḥ sarve mayā nītā yamakṣayam॥14-77-40॥
[धिक्तं (dhiktaṃ) - disgrace to; shame to; दुर्योधनं (duryodhanam) - Duryodhana; (a proper noun, the name of a person); क्षुद्रं (kṣudram) - mean; low; petty; राज्यलुब्धं (rājyalubdham) - greedy for kingdom; desirous of sovereignty; च (ca) - and; मानिनम् (māninam) - arrogant; proud one; यत्-कृते (yat-kṛte) - for whose sake; because of whom; बान्धवाः (bāndhavāḥ) - relatives; kinsmen; सर्वे (sarve) - all; मया (mayā) - by me; नीता (nītā) - have been led; यमक्षयम् (yamakṣayam) - abode of Yama (the lord of death); death;]
(Shame to Duryodhana, the mean, greedy for kingdom and arrogant one; for whose sake all relatives by me have been led to the abode of Yama.)
Shame upon Duryodhana, that petty, kingdom-hungry and arrogant man, because of whom all my relatives have been led by me to the realm of Yama (death). (14-77-40)
इत्युक्त्वा बहु सान्त्वादि प्रसादमकरोज्जयः। परिष्वज्य च तां प्रीतो विससर्ज गृहान्प्रति ॥१४-७७-४१॥
ity-uktvā bahu sāntvādi prasādam akarot jayaḥ| pariṣvajya ca tām prītaḥ visasarja gṛhān prati ॥14-77-41॥

(Having thus spoken, with much consolation and the like, Jaya did favor; having embraced her and (being) pleased, he dismissed (her) towards (her) home.)
After speaking thus with much consolation, Jaya graciously blessed her; then, pleased, he embraced her and sent her back to her home. (14-77-41)
दुःशला चापि तान्योधान्निवार्य महतो रणात्। सम्पूज्य पार्थं प्रययौ गृहान्प्रति शुभानना ॥१४-७७-४२॥
duḥśalā cāpi tānyodhān nivārya mahato raṇāt। sampūjya pārthaṃ prayayau gṛhānprati śubhānanā ॥14-77-42॥

(Duḥśalā and also, those warriors having warded off from the great battle, having honored Pārtha, she went towards home with an auspicious face.)
Duḥśalā, after having kept those warriors away from the great battle and having honored Arjuna, went towards her home with a delighted face. (14-77-42)
ततः सैन्धवकान्योधान्विनिर्जित्य नरर्षभः। पुनरेवान्वधावत्स तं हयं कामचारिणम् ॥१४-७७-४३॥
tataḥ saindhavakān yodhān vinirjitya nararṣabhaḥ। punarevānvadhāvatsa taṃ hayaṃ kāmacāriṇam ॥14-77-43॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सैन्धवकान् (saindhavakān) - the Sindhu people; योधान् (yodhān) - warriors; विनिर्जित्य (vinirjitya) - having completely conquered; नरर्षभः (nararṣabhaḥ) - the bull among men; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; अन्वधावत् (anvadhāvat) - he chased after; सः (saḥ) - he; तम् (tam) - that; हयम् (hayam) - horse; कामचारिणम् (kāmacāriṇam) - wandering as it desired;]
(Then, the bull among men, having completely conquered the Sindhu warriors, again indeed he chased after that horse wandering as it desired.)
Then the bull among men, having vanquished the Sindhu warriors, once more pursued that horse wandering where it pleased. (14-77-43)
ससार यज्ञियं वीरो विधिवत्स विशां पते। तारामृगमिवाकाशे देवदेवः पिनाकधृक् ॥१४-७७-४४॥
sasāra yajñiyaṃ vīro vidhivatsa viśāṃ pate| tārāmṛgamivākāśe devadevaḥ pinākadhṛk ॥14-77-44॥
[ससार (sasāra) - he pursued; यज्ञियं (yajñiyam) - the sacrificial one; वीरः (vīraḥ) - the hero; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - properly; विशां पते (viśāṃ pate) - O lord of the people; तारामृगम् (tārāmṛgam) - the star-deer (lunar deer); इव (iva) - like; आकाशे (ākāśe) - in the sky; देवदेवः (devadevaḥ) - the god of gods; पिनाकधृक् (pinākadhṛk) - the bearer of Pinaka (Shiva's bow);]
(He pursued the sacrificial one, the hero, properly, O lord of the people; like the star-deer in the sky, the god of gods, bearer of Pinaka.)

स च वाजी यथेष्टेन तांस्तान्देशान्यथासुखम्। विचचार यथाकामं कर्म पार्थस्य वर्धयन् ॥१४-७७-४५॥
sa ca vājī yatheṣṭena tāṃs tān deśān yathāsukham vicacāra yathākāmaṃ karma pārthasya vardhayan ॥14-77-45॥
[स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; वाजी (vājī) - the horse; यथेष्टेन (yatheṣṭena) - as it was wished; तांश् (tāṃs) - those (masculine, accusative plural); तान् (tān) - those; देशान् (deśān) - lands; यथासुखम् (yathāsukham) - with comfort; विचचार (vicacāra) - wandered/moved; यथाकामम् (yathākāmam) - as he desired; कर्म (karma) - deed; पार्थस्य (pārthasya) - of Pārtha (Arjuna); वर्धयन् (vardhayan) - promoting;]
(And he, the horse, as it was wished, those very lands, with comfort, wandered as he desired, promoting the deed of Pārtha.)
And the horse, moving just as he wished, wandered comfortably through those lands, advancing the mission of Pārtha (Arjuna). (14-77-45)
क्रमेण स हयस्त्वेवं विचरन्भरतर्षभ। मणिपूरपतेर्देशमुपायात्सहपाण्डवः ॥१४-७७-४६॥
krameṇa sa hayastvevaṃ vicaran bharatarṣabha। maṇipūrapater deśam upāyāt saha pāṇḍavaḥ ॥14-77-46॥
[क्रमेण (krameṇa) - in due order; by stages; स (sa) - he; हय (hayaḥ) - indeed; verily; त्वेवम् (tvevaṃ) - thus; in this manner; विचरन् (vicaran) - wandering; travelling; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas; मणिपूरपतेः (maṇipūrapateḥ) - of the lord of Maṇipura; देशम् (deśam) - the land; region; उपायात् (upāyāt) - arrived; came to; सह (saha) - together with; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the Pāṇḍava;]
(In due order, he indeed, thus wandering, O bull among the Bharatas, to the land of the lord of Maṇipura arrived together with the Pāṇḍava.)
O bull among the Bharatas, he, thus travelling step by step, together with the Pāṇḍava, reached the land of the lord of Maṇipura. (14-77-46)
