Vaiśampāyana said.
Then the heroic holder of Gāṇḍīva stood forth for battle, appearing in the fight unassailable, like the Himalaya mountain. (14-77-1)
Then, O Bhārata, the Sindhu warriors, having taken position once again, released showers of arrows in great fury. (14-77-2)
Having overpowered them, the greatly powerful Arjuna once more addressed those who stood ready for death, gently saying: (14-77-3)
Fight with your utmost power and strive for my destruction. Perform all tasks, for great fear has come upon you. (14-77-4)
I, this person, will fight you all, restraining the net of arrows. Stand firm, with your mind on battle; I will humble your pride. (14-77-5)
Having spoken thus, the Kaurava Arjuna, burning with anger, then remembered the words of his elder brother, O Bhārata. (14-77-6)
O father, the Kshatriyas who seek victory in battle are not to be killed but to be conquered—thus was declared by Dharmarāja, the great-souled one. Then, Phalguna, the best among men, reflected on this. (14-77-7)
Having been thus addressed by the king—"Let the kings not be killed"—how could the auspicious words of Dharmarāja here not be true? (14-77-8)
The kings should not be slain, and the king's order should be carried out. Thinking thus, he, intent on his brother's welfare, who was a knower of dharma, then spoke these words to the Saindhavas, who were maddened in battle. (14-77-9)
I shall not kill children or women among you who stand (before me), nor anyone who in battle says, "I am yours"; such a one is regarded as defeated. (14-77-10)
Having heard these words of mine, do what is good for yourselves; otherwise, you will fall into difficulty, being afflicted by me. (14-77-11)
Having thus spoken, the bull among the Kurus fought with those heroes; eager and excited, together with others who were equally excited and eager for victory. (14-77-12)
Then, O king, the Sindhu warriors released hundreds of thousands of curved arrows at the wielder of the Gandiva bow. (14-77-13)
Dhananjaya (Arjuna), with sharp arrows, cut down those cruel warriors rushing at him, who were like the poison of deadly serpents, right in the midst.
But having cut off those swift-moving vulture-feathered iron-tipped (arrows), he pierced each one in battle with ten arrows. (14-77-15)
Then, remembering that Jayadratha had been killed, the Sindhu warrior kings once again hurled javelins and lances at Dhanañjaya. (14-77-16)
Kirīṭī, the great-minded son of Pāṇḍu, made their purpose vain; and having cut down all those in between, shouted with delight. (14-77-17)
In the same way, he struck down the heads of those warriors eager for victory as they fell, using arrows with curved blades. (14-77-18)
The sound arose from those who were fleeing, once again charging, and turning back, just like the roar of a full ocean. (14-77-19)
Even as they were being slain then by Partha (Arjuna) of immeasurable brilliance, they fought Arjuna with whatever life and vigor remained. (14-77-20)
Then, most warriors with exhausted vehicles were rendered unconscious in battle by Phalguna (Arjuna) with arrows of curved shafts. (14-77-21)
But seeing all of them completely dejected, Duḥśalā, the daughter of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, took her young grandson and departed then; the heroic and innocent son of Suratha also left in his chariot at that time. (14-77-22)
For the sake of peace among all warriors, she approached the Pandava. Having reached Dhananjaya, she then uttered a cry of distress. Dhananjaya, seeing her, also laid down his bow. (14-77-23)
Having laid his bow aside, Pārtha then duly addressed his sister, saying, 'What shall I do?' She also spoke these words to him. (14-77-24)
O best of the Bharatas, this child, your sister's son, greets you, O hero; see him, O bull among men. (14-77-25)
Thus addressed, Arjuna then asked his father, “Where is she?” Thereupon, O king, Duḥśalā spoke these words. (14-77-26)
Afflicted by grief over his father and distressed with despair, his father indeed attained death, O hero; listen to me as I tell you how that happened. (14-77-27)
He, having earlier heard from you, O sinless one, that his father was slain in battle, and that you, the charioteer, had arrived for battle, being distraught with sorrow over his father's death, did not give up his life, O Dhanañjaya. (14-77-28)
O sinless one, Bībhatsu having arrived—upon only hearing that name, your son, afflicted with grief, fell to the ground and died. (14-77-29)
But, O lord, having seen him fallen, thereafter his son has today come to you, seeking refuge. (14-77-30)
Having thus spoken in a distressed tone, the daughter of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, afflicted, let out a cry and addressed Pārtha, who was himself afflicted, standing there with face turned downwards. (14-77-31)
Look upon me as your sister and also as your sister’s son. You ought to show compassion towards me, O knower of dharma, O best of the Kurus. Forget the king of the Kurus and that foolish Jayadratha. (14-77-32)
Just as Parikṣit, the destroyer of enemy heroes, was born of Abhimanyu, so my mighty-armed grandson was born of Suratha. (14-77-33)
Having brought him, O tiger among men, I have come into your presence. For the sake of peace among all warriors, listen also to this my word. (14-77-34)
O mighty-armed, this is the grandson of that slow-witted person who has arrived. Therefore, you ought to show favor to this boy. (14-77-35)
This one, having bowed his head together with me, O subduer of foes, begs you, O mighty-armed Dhananjaya, to make peace. (14-77-36)
O Pārtha, to the boy whose protector has been killed and who knows little, show grace, O knower of dharma, do not be led by anger. (14-77-37)
You should show favor even to him, who is ignoble, cruel, has forgotten his grandfather, and is greatly at fault. (14-77-38)
While Duḥśalā was speaking in a pitiful manner, Arjuna, remembering queen Gāndhārī and king Dhṛtarāṣṭra, deeply distressed by pain and sorrow, and censuring the kṣatriya duty, spoke. (14-77-39)
Shame upon Duryodhana, that petty, kingdom-hungry and arrogant man, because of whom all my relatives have been led by me to the realm of Yama (death). (14-77-40)
After speaking thus with much consolation, Jaya graciously blessed her; then, pleased, he embraced her and sent her back to her home. (14-77-41)
Duḥśalā, after having kept those warriors away from the great battle and having honored Arjuna, went towards her home with a delighted face. (14-77-42)
Then the bull among men, having vanquished the Sindhu warriors, once more pursued that horse wandering where it pleased. (14-77-43)
The god of gods and bearer of Pinaka (Shiva) properly pursued the sacrificial one, O lord of the people, like a star-deer in the sky. (14-77-44)
And the horse, moving just as he wished, wandered comfortably through those lands, advancing the mission of Pārtha (Arjuna). (14-77-45)
O bull among the Bharatas, he, thus travelling step by step, together with the Pāṇḍava, reached the land of the lord of Maṇipura. (14-77-46)
